Alice Eve defends her controversial Star Trek scene: “I’m proud of that”

Alice Eve, who stars in the new sci-fi film Warning , reflects on her much-criticized Star Trek moment.

star trek into the darkness alice eve

Star Trek once promised to boldly go where no man has gone before. But Alice Eve knows science fiction can go much further by foregrounding women within its strange new worlds.

“A lot of women in sci-fi are self-sufficient,” says the actress, who played one such character — Dr. Carol Marcus — in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness , though not without controversy. (More on that later.)

Still, more than 50 years after Star Trek first aired, “science fiction is not necessarily the domain of women in terms of creation” off-screen, Eve says. For all the Ellen Ripleys and Sarah Connors on screen, this lack of female perspective behind the camera can hold the genre back.

An English actress who’s also known for her roles in Men In Black 3 and on Marvel’s Iron Fist series, Eve is experienced at navigating this tension. Her latest film — Warning , from Polish director Agata Alexander — marks the first time Eve has made a sci-fi thriller with a female filmmaker.

“I wanted to support a woman tackling traditionally male subject matter,” Eve tells Inverse , speaking in support of the film (out now on digital platforms). “I loved her audacity. She had this grand vision she was determined to execute on a small budget. And she did.”

Broadly, Eve is a sci-fi fan. And playing characters like Star Trek ’s Carol Marcus is part of the appeal. “Sci-fi is cool because it shows powerful women,” Eve tells Inverse. “They're not usually married with kids. They’re working for their passion.”

In 2013, Eve found herself discussing the optics of female representation in sci-fi in a more negative sense. When Star Trek Into Darkness hit theaters, some audiences objected to a scene in which Marcus strips to her underwear and is glimpsed by a chastened Captain Kirk (Chris Pine).

Alice Eve Star Trek

After the release of Star Trek Into Darkness , Alice Eve found herself at the center of online debate about the portrayal of women in mainstream sci-fi.

A throwaway shot, it served little narrative purpose in the film’s theatrical cut. Online, the backlash was swift to what some saw as a gratuitous instance of a female character being unfairly sexualized. (Though, of course, there was also a backlash to this backlash. ) Eventually, producer Damon Lindelof apologized, and director J.J. Abrams conceded that he understood the criticism. Eve has spoken only sparingly about the incident but, looking back on the scene, remembers being taken aback by the controversy.

“It was something I voluntarily worked with a trainer to be fit for, was very much prepared for, and very much enjoyed [doing] — filming, executing, promoting,” recalls Eve, who says she was actively involved in discussing all her character’s scenes. “The feeling I shouldn’t have done it, or that it was exploitation, was confusing to me.”

Eventually, Eve shrugged it off: “There are many things in the world that are confusing. I put it down to one of those anomalies. I’m proud of that scene, and all the work I did.”

The experience was still eye-opening for the actress, leading her to seek out projects, like Warning, that would avoid the male gaze dominant in most Hollywood sci-fi. Told over a series of disconnected vignettes set during a freak storm, Warning stars Eve as Claire, a lonely woman whose daily life is dependent on a pyramid-shaped smart home device called “God 2.0.” (In real life, Eve avoids such smart devices.)

Living in a near-future where technology is seen as a substitute for human contact, Claire’s isolation is heightened by everyday interactions that are hostile, cold, and unfriendly. “People have their main relationship with their device and they lose the ability to connect, to feel each other and empathize,” Eve says. “To me, the ‘warning’ is to remain empathetic, to remain in tune” with humanity, she adds.

Eve found shooting Warning to be isolating, as her main scene partner is an inanimate object (voiced by actor James D’Arcy). “The pleasure of the movie was the experiment of not having another actor,” she says. “It’s different, but it was much more lonely.”

Alice Eve Warning

Alice Eve ( Star Trek Into Darkness ) stars as “Claire,” a lonely woman dependent on a smart home device called “God 2.0.”

Claire’s backstory isn’t deeply explored in Warning , but Eve and Alexander collaborated on the idea that her character’s vulnerability stemmed from heartbreak. “When we suffer heartbreak, we retreat,” she says. “And when we retreat, we don’t like to connect with people. And then she becomes reliant in that period of recovery on this device.”

Far from helping Claire, “the device hooks into her,” making Warning a cautionary tale, says Eve. Claire turns to God 2.0 in an almost fanatical way, with Warning taking an unsubtle stance against organized religion and its power to prey on people.

“She’s lured into this belief she'll be a better person,” says Eve. “Organized religion seduces people by telling them life will be better. It's old capitalism: You won’t be lonely and sad if you don’t commit sin . Obviously, it’s important to be a good person, but it’s not going to make your life better to live.”

Eve is still learning all it can mean to be a woman in science fiction. She will soon star in The Power , an Amazon series based on Naomi Alderman’s 2016 novel in which women possess electric superpowers. Alderman is writing the adaptation of her own book, with Handmaid’s Tale director Reed Morano at the helm of at least one episode and an all-female writer’s room involved in the project.

Eve says the 10-episode series’ main concept is teased by its title: who gets to wield power, and what will they decide to do with it?

“ The Power is an idea of a future where women have power and are more physically capable than men,” she explains. In the series, Eve stars opposite Leslie Mann, Auliʻi Cravalho, Daniela Vega, Tim Robbins, Rob Delaney, and John Leguizamo.

“My character is something of a choir [for] understanding the story,” she says. “I think it’s a really important story to tell, to show us throw[ing] the world on its axis and show how much of our [society’s] power dynamic relies on physical strength.”

In the years since Alice Eve starred in Star Trek , she’s paid closer attention to how women have been represented in the final frontier and beyond.

“There’s a different generation coming up, and I hope they’re feeling empowered,” says Eve, praising the long-overdue reckoning that the #MeToo movement has played one part in triggering. “I believe we're all having a human experience, and that’s a painful thing to have.”

Warning is available on Digital, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 22.

Star Trek Into Darkness’ Alice Eve Defends That Controversial Underwear Scene

Star Trek Into Darkness was hit with criticism for this moment.

Alice Eve as Carol Marcus in underwear in Star Trek Into Darkness

Along with having played young Agent O in Men in Black 3 and Mary Walker in Netflix’s Iron Fist series , Alice Eve has genre cred from her time as Carol Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness . When the second Kelvin Timeline-set Star Trek movie came out in 2013, it caught flak from various moviegoers for a scene where Chris Pine ’s James T. Kirk briefly sees Eve’s Carol stripped to her underwear. Nearly a decade later, Eve has come to the defense of that scene.

While promoting her upcoming sci-fi movie Warning , Alice Eve touched on the controversial Star Trek Into Darkness scene, which producer Damon Lindelof later apologized for, while director J.J. Abrams acknowledged that he understood the criticism. From Eve’s end, she was surprised the scene caused so much outcry, telling Inverse :

It was something I voluntarily worked with a trainer to be fit for, was very much prepared for, and very much enjoyed [doing] — filming, executing, promoting. The feeling I shouldn’t have done it, or that it was exploitation, was confusing to me.

The Star Trek Into Darkness moment in question happened right after Captain Kirk learned that the woman who boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise under the pseudonym Carol Wallace was actually Carol Marcus, daughter of Peter Weller’s Admiral Alexander Marcus. While speaking with Kirk about the torpedoes that Admiral Marcus ordered the Enterprise carry, Carol disrobed to put on a spacesuit in preparation to open up one of the torpedoes on a nearby planetoid. Kirk turned around after Carol had taken off her Starfleet uniform, and, well, the rest is history. You can watch it unfold below:

As laid out by her earlier comment, Alice Eve had no problem shooting that Star Trek Into Darkness scene, and despite being baffled by how much controversy it generated, eventually the actress set it all aside. In her words:

There are many things in the world that are confusing. I put it down to one of those anomalies. I’m proud of that scene, and all the work I did.

Alice Eve is the second actress to play Carol Marcus in the Star Trek film series, with the character originally being played by Bibi Besch in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Star Trek Into Darkness was also notable for featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as a character first identified as John Harrison, but later revealed to be Khan Noonien Singh , who was originally played by Ricardo Montalbán. While Into Darkness wasn’t as critically well received as 2009’s Star Trek , it did outperform its predecessor commercially with a $467 million global box office haul.

Star Trek Into Darkness was followed by 2016’s Star Trek Beyond , and while the film side of this franchise has been in suspended animation since then, two separate movies are in development: one from Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez , and the other from WandaVision director Matt Shakman , with Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson writing the script. There’s no word yet on which of these will take the June 9, 2023 release date Paramount Pictures has secured for a Star Trek movie.

Star Trek Into Darkness' Alice Eve Controversy Explained

  • Alice Eve's underwear scene in Star Trek Into Darkness remains controversial even years after its release, as it is seen by many as gratuitous and exploitative.
  • The scene sparked backlash during the rise of the #MeToo movement, with audiences pushing back against the exploitation of female characters in the Star Trek franchise.
  • While some argue that the scene is in line with the sexually charged nature of the original Star Trek series, others believe it showcases a lack of development for the female characters in J.J. Abrams' films.

Alice Eve's underwear scene in Star Trek Into Darkness remains controversial over a decade after J.J. Abrams' sequel to his blockbuster Star Trek (2009) was released. Star Trek Into Darkness continued the voyages of the young crew of the Starship Enterprise commanded by Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine). Abrams' sequel revealed itself as a remake of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and reintroduced some key characters from the 1982 film, including a young version of Dr. Carol Marcus (Alice Eve), into the rebooted Kelvin alternate timeline. One of Star Trek Into Darkness ' most maligned moments is when Carol strips to her underwear and is ogled by Captain Kirk .

Soon after Star Trek Into Darkness was released in the summer of 2013, J.J. Abrams and his team found themselves defending Alice Eve stripping to their underwear. Co-writer Damon Lindelof tweeted an "apology" for why Carol Marcus appeared "gratuitously and unnecessarily " in her undies, and his justification was, "Because... uh... MYSTERY?" (This was a tongue-in-cheek reference to J.J. Abrams' infamous "mystery box" style of filmmaking.) Co-writer Alex Kurtzman explained that Abrams' and his collective of writers "thought about" the ramifications of Carol's Star Trek Into Darkness underwear scene : "I t's not something that we went into blindly and certainly we all sat in a room going, okay, we're going to be criticized for this, but how do we justify this...? " Yet many fans don't believe Kirk ogling Carol in her underwear is justifiable. Rather, it comes off as a gratuitous example of the male gaze obviously intended to titillate the audience.

Star Trek Into Darkness Ending & Problems Explained

Why alice eve's carol marcus underwear scene in star trek into darkness is still controversial, it's still the main thing alice eve's carol marcus is remembered for.

Star Trek Into Darkness was released in 2013 just as the #MeToo movement began to force Hollywood to hold those who have abused their power and victimized women accountable. Alice Eve's underwear scene was one example of the audience pushing back against Star Trek gratuitously exploiting a female character. The argument was also made that overall, in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies starring Chris Pine , the female characters aren't as well-written as the men. Thus, Carol Marcus' character in Star Trek Into Darkness was so underdeveloped, Alice Eve stripping to her nethers ended up as the only thing the audience remembers about her role in the film.

For her part, Alice Eve doesn't understand why her Star Trek Into Darkness underwear scene is controversial, and the actress is proud of how hard she trained to get into incredible shape for that scene. Alice explained to FandomWire : "The feeling I shouldn’t have done it, or that it was exploitation, was confusing to me." Meanwhile, Trekkers who don't take issue with Carol Marcus stripping cite that Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek: The Original Serie s was also sexually charged and that J.J. Abrams' movie was merely honoring an aspect of the franchise that has been prevalent since the 1960s.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds May Introduce Carol Marcus

Strange new worlds won't repeat star trek into darkness' mistake.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series set in the Prime Star Trek Timeline, and Strange New Worlds season 3 could introduce Carol Marcus . In Strange New Worlds season 2's musical episode , "Subspace Rhapsody," Lieutenant James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) confessed to Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) that he has an on-again/off-again girlfriend named Carol. Thus, Kirk can't pursue a romantic relationship with La'an. This sets up the younger version of Carol Marcus, who was played by Bibi Besch in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and is the mother of Kirk's son, David Marcus (Merritt Butrick).

If Carol Marcus joins Strange New Worlds season 3, she will either be pregnant with David or just give birth to him . Thus, Strange New Worlds ' introduction of Carol won't be based on her sex appeal, regardless of who is cast as Carol Marcus . Dr. Marcus is also the future creator of Project Genesis and the Genesis Device, and Strange New Worlds will likely want to lay the foundation for her genius and her concern for the galactic problems of overpopulation and food supply. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' Carol Marcus will probably be a far cry from Alice Eve's version in Star Trek Into Darkness , although Eve did deliver a fine performance in the film, which is usually overlooked because of her underwear scene.

Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are available to stream on Paramount+.

Alice Eve has boldly gone where few women have gone before.

In Star Trek Into Darkness , the 31-year-old British actress stars as Dr. Carol Marcus, a mysterious new member of the Starship Enterprise’s crew who sneaks aboard to help them travel to the Klingon home world of Kronos to capture terrorist John Harrison ( Benedict Cumberbatch ). Marcus joins Capt. James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), First Officer Spock (Zachary Quinto), Lt. Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and the rest of the gang from the first Trek film, also helmed by J.J. Abrams . And the newcomer’s scantily clad scene with Kirk in the film will surely have many Trekkies' tongues wagging.

Eve, meanwhile, is much more than just a pretty face. In addition to starring in a bevy of films, including the biopic Hawking , coming-of-age dramedy Starter for 10 , and the romantic comedy She’s Out of My League , she’s a graduate of Oxford University and is “arguably the sharpest one” on the ship, according to Cumberbatch.

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Eve opens up about her journey from London to the furthest reaches of the galaxy.

I was talking with Benedict Cumberbatch last week about Hawking and Starter for 10 . He said you were the only one who didn’t fall for the “neutron cream” gag onset.

That’s kind of him! Yes, it is true. But I think it’s because I was bullied by Simon [Pegg] for so many years, that I knew it was just another tactic. It’s relentless. He does all that practical-joking stuff, so I knew that if Simon was texting me the night before saying, “Don’t forget to put your neutron cream on!” I knew that something was awry.

Now, I wanted to start off with your early years and work your way up to Star Trek Into Darkness , if you’ll bear with me.

Let’s do it!

Do you remember your first amateur acting gig?

Yeah, I did a school play, Twelfth Night , and I played Olivia when I was 12 at Bedales School. I just loved it. It was the first time I’d put makeup on, so that was pretty rad, and then I forget myself completely onstage, and that’s the drug.

Did your parents [Trevor Eve and Sharon Maughan], who are also professional actors, steer you towards or away from acting?

It’s very hard to see that stuff because you’re in it. I definitely don’t think I was steered away from it, but I wasn’t allowed to be a child actress or anything before I finished my education. So I think it was a moderate handling of a wild girl.

A wild girl?

I think I was a bit wild, yeah. I like to entertain, to perform. I was social. I just had a lot of energy, and I still do. I guess you have to have a lot of energy to do this!

You have heterochromia, which is pretty unique, with your left eye blue and right eye green. Were you aware of that as a youngster?

It’s so weird, this thing with the eyes! All through my life, I didn’t really consider my eyes at all, and then I became an actress. It’s great, I guess. They’re just in my face, and one is green and one is blue. It’s different, and I’m definitely a proponent of being different in any way you can in life, so I guess if you’re born a bit different that’s a good thing.

So you studied English at Oxford. Not too shabby!

[ Laughs ] We were able to do lots of plays that unfortunately we put on for the public and they had to pay to see—I still can’t get my head around that! I did a Howard Barker play called Scenes From an Execution , The Importance of Being Earnest , and I went to Edinburgh with a play we did that was an adaptation of a Groucho Marx story called Animal Crackers . Edinburgh was really cool, but you had to stand out all day and give fliers out for your show that night, and then go and do it.

After you graduated, did you immediately know you wanted to go into acting?

I think when I got there [I thought] I’d find some other passion, but such is with passions—if you have one, you don’t tend to find another one and it just stays until you recognize it. When I left, I went straight into auditioning. The first thing I did was a Richard Eyre film, Stage Beauty , and I did that while I was still at Oxford during my summer vacation. After that, I went on to do The Rotters Club , which was a TV series set in the ’70s based on a Jonathan Coe novel.

When did you move out to Los Angeles?

I came here with a movie, Starter for 10 [2006], because Tom Hanks produced it and his company brought us out here. After that, I got an agent and my agent told me to stay. Then I did another movie called Crossing Over . I guess I’d lived in L.A. when I was younger because my father had a TV show that was here, so we were here for about four or five years. I even had an American accent when I was younger which changed back to English when I got home. I’m definitely of both cultures.

Starter for 10 is so good. I wish it had a different title.

I know. That was a big debate, and it just didn’t travel. It’s such a sweet movie and it was a great experience.

Was it tough to break into Hollywood? There’s a gap on your résumé from 2007 to 2009.

Yeah! I’ve had my times where I thought I couldn’t do it anymore, and there’s that gap on my résumé from ’07 to ’09. I had just done She’s Out of My League and wanted to find something that resonated, and didn’t. Those were lonely years.

The thing I like about your character in Star Trek Into Darkness is that she’s not a one-dimensional love interest. She’s a tough woman. And you’re attractive but you’ve been to Oxford as well and have a bevy of stage, television, and cinema credits. Did you every feel like Hollywood was trying to pigeonhole you as the token “hot” woman?

Yes, she’s a woman in her own right. It’s not Hollywood’s fault it’s a visual medium and you’re kind of typecast accordingly. I can’t play a 65-year-old grandfather, as much as I’d like to. But I think over time, through the experience of working at what you want to be, you find a strength in yourself, and then that strength shines through, and you’re willing to play people who are diverse, strong, and dynamic.

I know you probably get asked this ad nauseam, but did you watch any Star Trek growing up?

I did with my grandfather. We used to watch it on Saturday afternoons. I thought it was a bit boring and a bit slow, and I guess I thought he was a bit of a geek for liking it. At the same time, I knew he was so cool that I just wanted to hang out with him and do what he did, even if it was boring and I wanted to be watching My Little Pony . Then I stopped, and I got back into it when J.J. asked me to join. I watched a lot of Star Trek from my computer while I was preparing for this.

In addition to the Simon trickery, were there any other fun moments with the cast?

It really is relentless, and there’s a nonstop string of joking with the group. It’s a big group of guys and then Zoe [Saldana] and myself, with J.J. at the helm. That energy is intoxicating, and it’s a very potent group to be around. I managed to get Simon a couple of times…you don’t have to do much to get Simon. If you even point your gun at him he feels got, so I’ve done that a couple of times.

People commonly associate Trekkies with geekdom. What are the geekiest things about you?

I think I’m probably quite geeky in a lot of ways. I’m pretty into books, kind of obsessive about that. I guess geekiness is manifested as obsessiveness, so I don’t know if women can be called geeks for being into shoes, but it’s the same obsession that guys have when they collect these dolls and stuff. It’s the same meticulous attention to detail, but it’s just forgiven because we put them on our feet. I don’t understand why. But I have too many books! I’m a bookworm.

Favorite books?

Portrait of a Lady , Jane Eyre , and then Andrew Marvell is my favorite poet. Everything in the Romantic movement is clearly a rebirth of grand proportions that kind of defined who we are, so Wordsworth, Keats, etc. My thesis at school was on Wordsworth.

“ Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood” is one of my favorite poems.

Look at you, man! Rarely do you meet an American who knows his Wordsworth.

What else do you have in the pipeline?

There’s this movie with Bryan Cranston [ Cold Comes the Night ], and he’s cool as a cucumber, man. It was a pretty tough experience. We made it in upstate New York and were filming in a motel, and I play a single mother who has to turn her motel into a brothel to make ends meet. And I did this film with Neil LaBute and Stanley Tucci called Some Velvet Morning . It was just Stanley, Neil, and me in a room, and we shot it in 10 days in Park Slope, Brooklyn. It was very different from Star Trek Into Darkness , where you’d have 250 people on set at a given time. We were doing 10 pages a day, and it was a head-fuck. But we just had this world tour where we showed Star Trek Into Darkness in different countries, so I’m going to take a little break now and maybe lay down on a beach, and then get myself back together.

Meet Alice Eve - Carol Marcus in Star Trek Into Darkness

Alice Eve as Carol Marcus in promotional Star Trek Into Darkness assets

StarTrek.com Staff

StarTrek.com reported last week that Star Trek Magazine #45 is out now and that it’s loaded with stories about Star Trek Into Darkness , including interviews with the entire cast, plus the filmmakers and other behind-the-scenes figures. Today, we've got an excerpt of the magazine's interview with Alice Eve, who portrays Carol Marcus in the film. Check it out below:

star trek into the darkness alice eve

In your research about Carol, what did you discover about the character and how you wanted to play her? In the original, when she was in The Wrath of Khan , she was older and she had a child [Kirk’s son, David]. I guess she was tough. This Carol Marcus that I was playing, I didn’t feel she was tough. I wanted to bring a vulnerability to her, because she was at the beginning of her journey as a woman, rather than the middle, where she had a child and she’s raising it. I wanted to bring that sense of hope and softness to her, along with the list of capabilities that are on the page. And she became mine at some point, I understood that there was a tradition, but I didn’t hold too tightly to any of it because she was mine now.

star trek into the darkness alice eve

Let’s talk about the look of Carol, because fans have sort of obsessed over her retro look in the trailers. How did that come about? Well, the costumes were already established, so it was understood I was a science officer in the Medbay, so I would wear blue in the sort of the shape of the dress that Zoe [Saldana] wore before. In terms of the hair, obviously this is the future, and there was this interesting debate that raged about what hair was like in the future. We used the famous Vidal Sassoon bob from the ‘60s to build a hairstyle. We think it showed a sense of youth, and it was in keeping with the original imagery of the ‘60s show, but we modernized it and it added a clean efficiency  to the line. It was that stuff we ended up falling on, and J.J. (Abrams) was involved in all aspects. He was even involved with the color I chose to wear on my nails.

In past Trek mythology, Carol and Kirk become lovers. Without spoiling your arc in this film, you are obviously a part of Kirk’s Enterprise, and right in the thick of the emotional journey. Yes, I am, but it’s not always about Kirk. There are very heavy emotional journeys that we went on, but I think the most challenging thing for me was running around the Enterprise (Laughs). I had funny shoes, and I felt like I was running always, and everything was very high-intensity.

Alice Eve discusses 'Star Trek Into Darkness' and the role of Dr. Carol Marcus

Alice Eve, a newcomer to the 'Trek' films who stars in 'Star Trek Into Darkness,' talked about how she prepared for her role and how she tried to stay focused despite massive anticipation for the film from fans.

  • By Ben Kendrick Screen Rant

May 22, 2013

After months of build-up and downright divisive pre-release speculation, Star Trek Into Darkness has arrived in US theaters. The film has received an overwhelmingly favorable response from critics (read our Star Trek Into Darkness review ) and is poised to make big bucks at the summer box office – in spite of high-powered hold-overs like Iron Man 3 along with a surprisingly strong performance from The Great Gatsby .

Last week, we had a chance to chat with the film’s stars, including Alice Eve who plays the much-talked about Dr. Carol Marcus to discuss the latest Star Trek film, her upcoming projects, and what it was like joining the iconic Star Trek movie crew. We’ve already posted our  interview with Karl Urban  (Dr. ” Bones” McCoy ) as well as Simon Pegg and John Cho (Lieutenant Commander Montgomery “Scotty” Scott and  Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu , respectively). Make sure to check back in the coming days as we publish further interviews.

NOTE: The following is an abridged (and more concise) version of the interview with Alice Eve. You can read the entire transcript from our conversations with actress by clicking the link below:

  • Alice Eve  (FYI: The unabridged version contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the film)

Next to Benedict Cumberbatch ’s John Harrison , Alice Eve’s Dr. Carol Marcus was one of the most talked-about new characters prior to the Star Trek Into Darkness  release. Fans poured over Eve’s haircut, uniform, and facial expressions in an attempt to figure out her role in the film ahead of time. Director J.J. Abrams even capitalized on fan obsession over the character – using a picture of Alice Eve in her undergarments to hide a viral marketing link .

However, the actress never let all the speculation distract her and, instead, tried to stay focus on the task at hand:

Alice Eve: I don’t follow that because it’s pretty damaging if you get too into that stuff. Obviously I have a bit of an awareness because I go to the internet like everybody else but I don’t get too involved in the details of those conversations just because it can hurt you if you stumble on something that’s not nice [...] Even with the internet aside there’s an element of JJ making an environment where you’re able to feel safe. If you feel safe there’s no fear or pressure. You feel that you’re just there to do your job and serve the movie that everyone’s making. There are thousands of people that go into making a movie like this. There’s us [the actors] but there’s the preproduction, there’s the post production and that amounts to a lot of eyes and ears and minds so you’re just a part of a big journey and a big bandwagon. You take it day by day.

In preparation for her role, Eve went back and rewatched the first season of the classic Star Trek series, along with several of the original films. Like many of the Star Trek reboot stars, the actress wanted to find a balance between developing her own interpretation of Dr. Carol Marcus while paying homage to the version played by  Bibi Besch :

Alice Eve: I enjoy any sort of preparation. I love what I do. The process to doing what I do is to research it and to look into the depths of the person. Especially if there’s an established cannon such as there was with Star Trek so I enjoyed that process. That’s the process I enjoy; that’s the creation, that’s the building part of it. That’s why I do what I do.

Elaborating on what exactly she picked-up from Besch’s portrayal, Eve asserted that it was important to include “purpose” and “strength,” elements that are clearly on display in Star Trek Into Darkness :

Alice Eve: I think that when Bibi [Besch] played her in the 1982 films with a real directness, a purpose and a strength. I definitely wanted to bring that to my Carol. But because JJ [Abrams] kind of split the timeline in 2009 it gave us a bit of room for our own interpretation. So obviously that was sort of liberating at the same time it was taking on the hallmarks of who she was as a person [...] She’s very strict with Kirk in the film in ’82… when they have that screen conversation she’s very strict about what she wants Kirk to do and the fact she has information at her disposal so with that information she’s direct to Kirk and I guess pedagogical is the word.

Still, there are major differences in the two versions of the character – most notably the addition of Eve’s English accent. In fact, Abrams was so concerned that the change would be a sticking point (Marcus had an American accent in the original series), he actually shot an expository scene where the character explains her own backstory – a scene that was eventually cut:

Alice Eve: There was one scene that we shot that didn’t make it into the film. That was about me explaining why I had an English accent; my mother moved to England when my father stayed in San Francisco to run Starfleet. I think that JJ felt that plot point wasn’t necessary and that you didn’t question it beyond the first moment. I think that made sense and we had a certain license with the split timeline.

Dear Reader,

About a year ago, I happened upon this statement about the Monitor in the Harvard Business Review – under the charming heading of “do things that don’t interest you”:

“Many things that end up” being meaningful, writes social scientist Joseph Grenny, “have come from conference workshops, articles, or online videos that began as a chore and ended with an insight. My work in Kenya, for example, was heavily influenced by a Christian Science Monitor article I had forced myself to read 10 years earlier. Sometimes, we call things ‘boring’ simply because they lie outside the box we are currently in.”

If you were to come up with a punchline to a joke about the Monitor, that would probably be it. We’re seen as being global, fair, insightful, and perhaps a bit too earnest. We’re the bran muffin of journalism.

But you know what? We change lives. And I’m going to argue that we change lives precisely because we force open that too-small box that most human beings think they live in.

The Monitor is a peculiar little publication that’s hard for the world to figure out. We’re run by a church, but we’re not only for church members and we’re not about converting people. We’re known as being fair even as the world becomes as polarized as at any time since the newspaper’s founding in 1908.

We have a mission beyond circulation, we want to bridge divides. We’re about kicking down the door of thought everywhere and saying, “You are bigger and more capable than you realize. And we can prove it.”

Alice Eve is fishing in her pocket for her iPhone to find me a picture. She's just been to Russia on a promotional tour for what is easily the biggest film of her career to date – J J Abrams' sci-fi sequel Star Trek Into Darkness – and the blonde Brit wants to show me a gift she was given, a set of specially commissioned Russian dolls featuring the images of Kirk, Spock and other Star Trek characters. "Isn't that genius?" she beams, proudly showing off memorabilia that would probably fetch a fortune at a Trekkie convention.

With this in mind, studio executives at Paramount will be relieved to know the 30-year-old actress didn't steal anything for the bridge of the Starship Enterprise – "I'm not a klepto!" she giggles. Not even a uniform? "The fabric is very expensive," she trills. "They're almost artefacts." Today, sporting a quite stunning mint-coloured mother-of-pearl frock coat – decorated with a swarm of bees – she simply seems delighted to be cast in one of the summer's most anticipated blockbusters. "It's a very special moment in my career trajectory."

Eve plays Dr Carol Marcus, a character who last appeared (as played by Bibi Besch) in 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Then she was a molecular biologist and mother to Captain Kirk's only son. Here, joining the Starship Enterprise as a weapons specialist, there is a slight frisson with Chris Pine's Kirk. But her mind is on higher things, with the crew fighting Benedict Cumberbatch's villain. "She is a genuine superbrain," says Eve. "I just took it that she was as clever if not the cleverest person on board."

There may be a slightly gratuitous shot of Eve in her bra – even Abrams can't resist the sexy scientist cliché – but the actress admirably convinces as a brain-box. She did, after all, read English at Oxford. "I'm not intimidated by academia. I pursued it quite heavily myself… and I went all the way with education. I suspect if I hadn't gone all the way myself, then I wouldn't have the – pun intended – weaponry within myself to go and tackle something like that. But I felt confident in that department, that I could pretend to be as clever as her."

Confidence is something Eve radiates. Until Star Trek Into Darkness at least, Hollywood may have tapped her up for a rather uninspiring selection of roles – the love interest in romcom She's Out of My League; Charlotte's "boobtastic" nanny in Sex and the City 2; Edgar Allen Poe's damselin distress in The Raven and a young Emma Thompson with Sixties bouffant hair in Men in Black 3. But there's far more to Eve than that. Not many would have the guts to walk into a room with Tom Stoppard and Trevor Nunn, and leave with a part in their production of the former's play Rock'n'Roll – "a good moment," she says.

The daughter of actors Trevor Eve (of Shoestring fame) and Sharon Maughan, Eve has almost circumvented the traditional "costume drama" route taken by most British actresses. Her screen debut may have been a brief appearance in Richard Eyre's film Stage Beauty, but there's barely a petticoat or lace glove on her CV. Rather, echoing her childhood – when her family moved to Los Angeles for her to try and crack the US market – she made a deliberate play and left for America.

So what has it taken to break into Hollywood? "Dedication and being sure of your dream and following it with steadfastness, with an absolute focus," she says. "I was clear about what I wanted to do and the world I wanted to be a part of. I love films and I love the way they make them in Hollywood and I wanted to be a part of that, so I pursued it." It helped, she says, that she'd partly grown up there, that she understood the American way of life – which was hers until she returned with her family to England when she was 13.

While her accent is pure Home Counties, "I was an American girl," she admits. "I had to come back here and learn to be English. I spoke with an American accent and I liked American things. And when my parents moved back, I had to learn what English girls spoke like and what English girls liked." The oldest of three, she returned to study at Bedales, which – while playing Olivia in Twelfth Night – was where she caught the acting bug. "Then it's like a drug and you're addicted."

Having worked with J J Abrams, it's only going to get worse. The director behind Lost and Super 8 has just committed to taking on the next Star Wars episode, though Eve stops short of throwing her hat in the ring for a role. "I wouldn't be greedy. I think it's been a great pleasure to work with JJ at all." Still, you can bet she wouldn't turn down the chance to brandish a lightsaber if Abrams came asking.

While she's attached to the planned Entourage movie spin-off – she played the British girl who captured the heart of fictional Hollywood star Vincent Chase in the TV show – she's not all about blockbusters. She's just completed Neil LaBute's Some Velvet Morning, a two-hander with Stanley Tucci about sexual politics, which she dubs "a real-life horror film without any blood". Then there's Cold Comes the Night, in which she plays a widowed single mother who turns the motel she owns into a brothel. "It took me about three months to come back from [playing] her."

She tells me that acting sometimes can sap your soul. "You can be left with less of yourself." And it certainly hasn't left much room for love. After dating actors Rafe Spall and Rufus Sewell, last year, she called time on her romance with Oxford-educated poet Adam O'Riordan. Yet she doesn't seem panic-stricken; not even about turning 30. "I was ready," she says. "I think if you're not ready, then it might be difficult. But I was really ready. My twenties were quite complex but I'm really happy." The way her career is going, she has every right to be.

Star Trek Into Darkness' Alice Eve Is Proud Of Her NSFW Scene (Despite Backlash)

Dr. Carol Marcus speaking

"Star Trek Into Darkness" may not be the most heavily regarded of the franchise, but there are some moments that stand out in the public consciousness (for better and worse). The first is the ham-fisted attempt to get audiences to believe that Benedict Cumberbatch was playing anyone else other than Khan in the lead-up to the film's release, and of course, that's precisely who he was . The other thing people might remember is a gratuitous scene where Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) sneaks a glimpse of Dr. Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) in her underwear.

A backlash soon followed, with people claiming the scene served no narrative purpose other than objectifying a woman. The film's writer, Damon Lindelof, apologized to fans on Twitter: "I copped to the fact that we should have done a better job of not being gratuitous in our representation of a barely clothed actress." It's a shame that one scene is what most people take away from the role because Dr. Carol Marcus is an otherwise great character and a valuable member of the team.

One person who didn't see what all the fuss was about was actress Alice Eve. Years after "Star Trek Into Darkness" came out, she said how she was fine with doing the scene in the first place.

Alice Eve is 'proud of that scene'

While the "Star Trek Into Darkness" scene in question could be called "unnecessary" or "gratuitous," Alice Eve didn't really see what the big deal was. Years after the film came out, she looked back on it and told Inverse , "It was something I voluntarily worked with a trainer to be fit for, was very much prepared for, and very much enjoyed [doing] — filming, executing, promoting." It shouldn't have come as any surprise. That moment was likely in the script, so Eve probably knew what she was signing up for, which is why she worked with a trainer to look her best.

The backlash that followed also confused her, adding, "The feeling I shouldn't have done it, or that it was exploitation, was confusing to me." An argument could be made either way — both that the scene was made through the male gaze but that Alice Eve was in control and was a willing participant to show off her body. At the end of the day, it was just one of those things for the actress, "There are many things in the world that are confusing. I put it down to one of those anomalies. I'm proud of that scene, and all the work I did."

Eve would continue pursuing intriguing projects, including another science-fiction film, "Warning." That movie doesn't give in nearly as much to the male gaze, and "Star Trek" fans should seek it out to see Eve in another context.

It was actually a completely different scene in Star Trek Into Darkness that got cut

The discourse around Alice Eve's scene in "Star Trek Into Darkness" has numerous facets to it. Not the least of which is that Chris Pine, who is also insanely attractive, can also be found shirtless throughout the franchise. However, one could make the argument that that's actually part of his character, seeing how he's a womanizer. Dr. Carol Marcus, on the other hand, is pretty much all business from the start, so the insinuation that she would strip with Kirk in the vicinity may come across as odd to some.

The fact this conversation continues raging a decade after the film came out suggests there are many intersectional components to the scene with a myriad of viewpoints, many of which have valid reasonings. And all of this could've been avoided had the scene been nixed in the first place. After all, it wouldn't have been out of the question, seeing how Eve told other outlets about another scene that was left on the cutting room floor.

Eve admitted one scene that got cut that sounded rather superfluous, "There was only one scene that I did that didn't make it in. It's a scene where I explain why I have an English accent, but I don't think it was my favorite scene." Suffice it to say, if "Star Trek 4"  ever gets off the ground, expect them to be very careful about who they depict in underwear.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS: Alice Eve Reflects On Controversial Underwear Scene: "I'm Proud Of That"

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS: Alice Eve Reflects On Controversial Underwear Scene: "I'm Proud Of That"

Star Trek Into Darkness came under fire for a scene with Alice Eve in her underwear, but the actress has now said she really doesn't understand what all the complaining was about...

Star Trek Into Darkness was released in 2013 after adding actress Alice Eve to the impressive ensemble. She played Carol Marcus, but there was no sign of the character in Star Trek Beyond . There simply weren't any ongoing plans for Captain Kirk's love interest, though some wondered if the controversy surrounding one key moment might have led to Eve's absence.

We are, of course, referring to the completely superfluous underwear scene, which saw the doctor reduced to little more than eye candy for Kirk to drool over. Producer Damon Lindelof later apologized, while J.J. Abrams similarly accepted that it may have been a misfire.

Eve, on the other hand, doesn't understand the complaints!

"It was something I voluntarily worked with a trainer to be fit for, was very much prepared for, and very much enjoyed [doing] — filming, executing, promoting," Eve recently told Inverse , making it clear she was actively involved in all of Carol Marcus' scenes in the Star Trek sequel. "The feeling I shouldn’t have done it, or that it was exploitation, was confusing to me."

"There are many things in the world that are confusing," the actress continued. "I put it down to one of those anomalies. I’m proud of that scene, and all the work I did."

Well, seeing as these comments come straight from Eve, that brings an end to the controversy that continues to surround this moment. There's no denying that it was gratuitous, but the actress clearly enjoyed being part of this scene in Star Trek Into Darkness and didn't view it in any sort of negative light.

If you're wondering what the fuss is all about, here's that scene:

Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve Talk STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS, Comparisons to THE AVENGERS and SKYFALL, the Audition Process, and More

Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve Talk Star Trek Into Darkness. Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve talk about the sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.

star-trek-into-darkness-chris-pine

Cumberbatch: The boy – sorry, the man – was so tired carrying that film, I’ve got to say. He’s brilliant in it, I’m really excited to see his performance. Eve: A lot of us in the film, especially Spock and Bones, serve as Kirk’s alter egos of logic and morality, but I do think in this film, after winning the captaincy in the previous movie, we see him earn it… spiritually, really, and sort of philosophically. Other ways than the practical earning of it. Cumberbatch: It’s like he’s the son in the first and the father in the second, almost, don’t you think? Not as an actual father, though, that’s not a storyline at all, but I mean that he’s become a father to his crew

When an image appeared online showing Cumberbatch’s villain character seemingly locked up aboard the Enterprise, many fans noted that its similarities to the same plot device of “villain gets captured but it’s all part of the plan” that was used in The Avengers , The Dark Knight Rises , and Skyfall .  Cumberbatch admitted that he’s very aware of the comparisons:

Empire: With your character locked up in this way, do you feel that people will naturally draw comparisons to The Avengers , or The Dark Knight , or Skyfall ? Cumberbatch:  Yep, all three of those films, and I’m quite worried about it – though they are great films, with great villains – but so what if they do? Not all of those bad guys had Enterprise costumes on, and that’s what matters. But it’s very exciting, that scene, that was a great sequence to film.

Cumberbatch also talked about the danger of trying to appease fans of such a well-loved property:

Cumberbatch: If you have an over preoccupation with perception and trying to please people’s expectations, then you can go mad. We’ve got J.J. Abrams, and he’s already beautifully cracked that nut in the first film, and I think it pleased a lot of the varying camps: people who were coming to the franchise for the first time, the J.J. Abrams fans and the Star Trek fans, so that was a big comfort to me. It’s always a compact between me and the writers and the directors – the people who are hiring me to do the job – and if I’m making them happy, I can trust that it’ll make fans happy as well... You know, 'Sherlockies' – as they’re probably known now, after Trekkies – have a long history. Jeremy Brett and Basil Rathbone are huge icons, playing a character that’s been taken on by different people over 70 times – you know, it’s the most played fictional character of all time – so having done two series of that and being reasonably confident we’re doing all right with it, and I’m doing all right with him, I’m not…  overly  confident about this, but I’m just saying it’s something you don’t let preoccupy yourself.

Given the high-profile nature of the film, the role of Carol Marcus was understandably a coveted one.  Eve revealed what her audition process was like:

Eve: Mine was actually completely different to Benedict’s – mine happened over a longer period of time, much earlier on in the process. ( Turning to Benedict ) You were finding out at the end of December 2011, for me it was at the end of September, October I think it was... All very civilised, really. I met J.J. a couple of times, read for him, met with him, spoke with him, and then he called me up! I was driving when he called and I got shaky, I thought I was going to crash, so had to pull over into this little car park. He kept saying all these things to me in his rather charming way and I didn’t really know what he was getting at, and this went on for, like, 10 minutes before I said, "J.J. I’m so sorry, I just have to clarify, are you offering me the job? Because before I say that I’d lay my life on the line, I will eat real live frogs for you, Sir J.J. Of Abrams, I need to know if I’d be doing it for the benefit of the job..." He goes, "Yep, I’m giving you the job. I think that’s what happening, yes." So I said, "That’s wonderful, thank you, I’d love to do it!"

Head on over to Empire to read the full interview, which includes tidbits on Simon Pegg ’s Mars Bars addiction, working with the rest of the cast, and Cumberbatch’s reaction to seeing the various memes created using the candid cast photos that Pegg and Zachary Quinto shared from a night out in San Francisco.   Star Trek Into Darkness  opens on May 17th.

10 Star Trek Episodes & Movies That Prove Peabody Award Is Deserved

Data's lost chapter begins, as star trek's android quits starfleet to kill a god, star trek actors & executive producers react to peabody award.

Star Trek Beyond   was the second sequel to JJ Abrams' well-received  Star Trek   reboot, but why didn't Alice Eve's Carol Marcus make a return? Abrams enjoyed success with the first two installments in his rebooted franchise, with  Star Trek  earning $386 million worldwide while its sequel  Star Trek Into Darkness   doing even better with a $467 million haul.

Unfortunately for the franchise,  Star Trek Into Darkness   faced a lot of flack for its needless deception as to who its secret villain was (spoiler alert; it was Khan), and Abrams was soon tempted away from the franchise by making a movie set in a galaxy far, far away.  Star Trek Beyond  ended up being a ship with a different captain and Abrams' introduction of classic character Carol Marcus - who first appeared in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , played by Bibi Besch - ended up being left behind.

There was a period of uncertainty following the release of  Star Trek Into Darkness  in 2013, and it wasn't until three years later that  Star Trek Beyond arrived. The film wound up being directed by Justin Lin - best known at the time for his work in the  Fast & Furious   franchise - and had a script written by co-star Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. The sequel enjoyed a decent critical response but profits sadly dipped to a figure even lower than the first film's box office. Alice Eve's sort-of love interest Carol Marcus for Captain Kirk in  Star Trek Into Darkness  didn't return for  Star Trek Beyond , probably to the benefit of Alice Eve. She had said in previous interviews she was game for returning , so why didn't the character return?

Carol Marcus' use in  Star Trek Into Darkness had already come under flack in the media for not having much of a purpose in the overall story, as well as for having a needless scene of star Alice Eve in her underwear . The reception to the poor handling of her character wasn't the reason for Marcus' lack of appearance in  Star Trek Beyond , however. Rather, Simon Pegg has gone on record to say that the story - which saw the crew of the Enterprise abandon ship, stranded on a planet by Idris Elba's mysterious villain - didn't have a role or a purpose for Carol Marcus. Pegg stated;

"We thought rather than have Carol Marcus be not used to a reasonable capacity, let’s just not include her, have her be alive, in canon, and be ready to come back at any time."

Rather than overpack an already crowded cast list for  Star Trek Beyond , Pegg opted instead to save Carol Marcus for a potential future installment. Sadly, that hasn't yet come to pass, although Noah Hawley is working on a new  Star Trek   movie. Whether that includes any of the Kelvin Timelines'  cast, Hawley isn't saying. Whatever the future holds for  Star Trek , it's looking unlikely Alice Eve's Carol Marcus will make a return.

Chris Pine’s Best Movies, Ranked by Rotten Tomatoes Score

Here are some of the best films of this actor, whose career soared after playing Captain Kirk in Star Trek.

Chris Pine was born in 1980 within a family closely related to the entertainment industry: he is the son of actor Robert Pine, actress-turned-psychotherapist Gwynne Gilford, and grandson of Hollywood star Anne Gwynne. Needless to say, it was only a matter of time before he developed a passion for acting that led him to grow into the well-established artist he is today.

Pine kicked off his journey in the industry by taking drama classes while in college, and after training for a few years, he made his TV acting debut in 2003, in an episode of the popular medical drama show ER , followed by appearances on The Guardian and CSI: Miami . A year later, he made his film debut as part of a wildly popular project, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement .

However, the performance that finally launched Pine's career to stardom was as Captain James T. Kirk in the 2009 film Star Trek , the reboot that became an all-time box office and critical hit. Thanks to this role, Pine became world-renowned, and his popularity allowed him to land increasingly challenging and significant parts. Over the years, he has proven his versatility on screen, playing different characters across all film genres. He has also excelled both in television and theater, and remains relevant to this day, with ambitious upcoming projects challenging his skills.

Soon, he is expected to star in Disney's upcoming animated film Wish and he will be making his directorial debut in the mystery comedy film Poolman , where he will also serve as producer, co-writer and starring actor. While we wait for news on these projects, here is a look back at Chris Pine's best films so far, according to Rotten Tomatoes score.

10 Star Trek Into Darkness — 84%

The 2009 film Star Trek proved to be a worldwide hit, so director J. J. Abrams and fellow producers immediately set to work on its sequel. Thus, in 2013 Star Trek Into Darkness , the 12th film in this popular science fiction franchise, hit theaters. This production features the main actors of the original film, with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto at the helm as Captain Kirk and Spock, joined by Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, and Peter Weller. In this installment, the crew of the Starship Enterprise comes home to discover that the Starfleet is under attack from within, so Captain Kirk and the rest of the characters embark on an extremely dangerous mission to hunt down the man responsible for the disaster.

Star Trek Into Darkness was the last film in Leonard Nimoy's career prior to his death, playing Spock Prime. This production enjoyed similar success to its predecessor, surpassing it at the box office with a profit of $467 million worldwide. This made it the franchise's highest-grossing film to date.

9 Star Trek Beyond — 86%

Three years after the release of Star Trek Into Darkness , the latest film in the franchise, Star Trek Beyond , hit theaters. In this 2016 film, the crew of the Enterprise sets out on a rescue mission that is ambushed by Krall, a very powerful alien creature that intends to take possession of a relic transported on the starship. Thus, Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the surviving crew are stranded on a mysterious planet with no communication, forced to confront this villain in order to stop him from carrying out his plans.

Star Trek Beyond was directed by Justin Lin, with Abrams serving as producer. Actors from the previous films reprised their roles, with Idris Elba, Sofia Boutella, Joe Taslim, and Lydia Wilson joining the cast. This production was one of the final ones to feature actor Anton Yelchin, who passed away shortly before the film's release. Star Trek Beyond was as successful as the previous reboot films, and received many nominations and awards. In 2016, the production of a new sequel in the franchise was announced, but it has been delayed several times, and so far, there is no update on it .

8 Unstoppable — 87%

Unstoppable is a 2010 action film that marked Tony Scott's last credit as director and producer prior to his death in 2012. This renowned director of the action genre had already been collaborating with Denzel Washington for several years, and Unstoppable marked their fifth collaboration, with Chris Pine as co-star.

This production is actually based on true events, and follows the story of a train loaded with toxic chemicals that spins out of control, leaving the fate and safety of a large number of people in the hands of a highly experienced engineer and a young conductor. Joining Washington and Pine in this acclaimed production are Rosario Dawson, Ethan Suplee, and Kevin Dunn.

7 Stretch — 88%

Pine went uncredited for his role in the 2014 comedy crime film Stretch , yet some consider his performance to be the highlight of this production. Written and directed by Joe Carnahan and featuring a cast with Patrick Wilson in the title role alongside Ed Helms, Jessica Alba, James Badge Dale, Brooklyn Decker, and Pine himself, the film follows Stretch, a limo chauffeur who runs into big trouble over a gambling debt he can't pay.

His luck seems to change overnight when he meets a new client, an eccentric millionaire named Roger Karos who promises to pay off his debt if Stretch does whatever he asks for one night. This agreement leads the driver to one of the craziest and most dangerous nights of his life.

6 Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves — 90%

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is, so far, the latest film starring Pine, and it was released last January. Even so, it managed to quickly rank among Pine's top-rated films on Rotten Tomatoes, with a score of 90%. This fantasy comedy film, directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, takes the popular tabletop role-playing game once again to the silver screen, this time starring Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant.

The production follows Edgin Darvis and his party of adventurers as they set out on a quest to find a tablet that could help bring Edgin's wife back to life, but their adventure takes an unexpected turn when they get into trouble with the wrong people.

5 Wonder Woman — 93%

In the 2016 film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , Gal Gadot made her first on-screen appearance playing Wonder Woman. A year later, she starred in her own film, directed by Patty Jenkins and joined by Pine, Robin Wright, Danny Huston, and David Thewlis in the cast.

Wonder Woman introduces Diana, a warrior and princess of the Amazon who was raised on an isolated tropical island. Her life is turned upside down when American pilot Steve Trevor (played by Pine) lands on the island and informs her about the ongoing worldwide war. Thus, the woman decides to abandon her home in order to stop World War I and thus save humanity, a mission that leads her to discover that she is even stronger than she thinks.

Wonder Woman was released in June 2017 and in no time became a box office success, reaping $822 million worldwide, the highest gross for a female-directed film until 2021. Following the success of this production, a sequel titled Wonder Woman 1984 was released in 2020, with all the main actors reprising their roles.

4 Star Trek — 94%

The year 2009 marked the premiere of Star Trek , the J. J. Abrams film that made this beloved franchise even more popular. This production is the eleventh Star Trek film, and the first one in the reboot series, which was completed with the 2013 and 2016 sequels. It follows James T. Kirk, Spock and the rest of the crew of the USS Enterprise as they battle the Romulan villain Captain Nero. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto play the roles of Kirk and Spock, joined in the cast by Leonard Nimoy, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, and Anton Yelchin, among other actors.

Star Trek became an overnight box-office hit, grossing over $385 million worldwide. It also received widespread critical acclaim, along with several awards. It was nominated for four Academy Award and won for Best Makeup, making it the first, and so far, the only film in the franchise to be recognized with this statuette.

3 Hell or High Water — 97%

Pine and Ben Foster star in the 2016 film Hell or High Water as Toby and Tanner, two Texas brothers who set out on a quest to rob different banks nearby to raise the money they need to save their family ranch, which is their most prized possession. But there's a problem: these brothers are not real robbers, and they quickly arouse the attention of two Texas Rangers who set out to track them down.

Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham join Pine and Foster in the cast of this production that became a hit with critics and performed well at the box office. Hell or High Water received, among many accolades, four nominations at the Academy Awards and three at the Golden Globes.

2 Love, Antosha — 97%

Actor Anton Yelchin made his mark on the film industry and everyone around him. The artist, famous for his roles in films such as Green Room , Star Trek and Like Crazy passed away at the age of 27, following an accident with his car outside his home in 2016. Three years later, Garret Price took the helm of Love, Antosha , a tribute documentary that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

This film retraces Yelchin's life and career through several of the actor's writings and interviews with his family and friends. Nicolas Cage serves as the documentary's narrator, with Chris Pine and a slew of other actors and filmmakers talking about their experiences with Yelchin in interviews.

1 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — 97%

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a 2018 film directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, and its overwhelming success spurred the development of a sequel released earlier this month, with a reception as good as the first film. In this production, Shameik Moore plays Miles Morales, a teenager who gains strange powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. However, unlike what this young man believes, he is not the only one with Spider-Man's powers: several people from parallel universes share his talents, and he must ally with them to save his universe from crime lord Kingpin.

Joining Shameik Moore in this animated film are Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, and Lily Tomlin, among many other actors. Pine plays another version of Peter Parker from Miles' universe, who offers to mentor him, but gets killed before he can do so. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse received, among many other accolades, the Academy Award and the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. With a score of 97% and an Audience Score of 94%, it is, so far, Pine's highest-rated production on Rotten Tomatoes.
