New Westminster is a city of 79,000 people (2021) in British Columbia that is part of Vancouver's eastern suburbs . Its many Victorian-era houses and buildings remain giving the city a different feel than the rest of suburban Vancouver.

Understand [ edit ]

Burnaby lies to the north and west, Richmond on the southwest corner, Coquitlam on the northeast and the Fraser River borders it on the south and east.

History [ edit ]

Despite being a suburb of Vancouver today, New Westminster once eclipsed it in importance. Founded by the British in 1859 as the capital of the new colony of British Columbia, it was the first city incorporated in the colony. The name came from Queen Victoria for her favourite part of London and has earned the city the nickname "The Royal City". The hopes for colonial grandeur took a blow when Victoria was named the new capital of British Columbia in 1866. The city's importance continued to gradually decline as the major transportation routes moved north through Coquitlam and Burnaby into Vancouver .

Get in [ edit ]

Map

See Vancouver for options to get in the Vancouver area by plane, by bus, and by train, and by boat.

New Westminster is easy to access by car.

By car [ edit ]

From Vancouver's airport, get on Marine Drive and head east for 15-30 minutes (it depends on traffic). From Highway 1 ( Trans-Canada Highway ), take the Brunette Ave exit and head south. From Burnaby , driving east on either Kingsway or Canada Way will get you there.

By bus [ edit ]

  • Mountain Man Mike's Bus Service ( Stops at Braid station on SkyTrain's Expo Line ), ☏ +1 778-382-7729 , [email protected] . Twice per week service between Kaslo and Vancouver with stops in Balfour , Nelson , Castlegar , Christina Lake , Grand Forks , Greenwood , Rock Creek, Osoyoos , Keremeos , Princeton , Manning Provincial Park , Hope , Chilliwack , Abbotsford , Langley , and New Westminster. This service provider also offers a weekly route between Kalso and Calgary via Nelson. ( updated Mar 2022 )

Get around [ edit ]

The city is fairly compact, measuring only 11 km long and 6.5 km wide so if you are up for a good walk you can get around by foot; however, be warned that much of the city is on the side of a large hill. The street system is mostly a grid, with Columbia Street the major street along the Fraser River and 6th and 12th Streets being the major streets that run back from the river towards Burnaby.

By public transit [ edit ]

Burnaby and New Westminster are part of the same transit zone, so the cost will be $3.15; getting in from anywhere else will cost $4.55.

By SkyTrain [ edit ]

There are five SkyTrain stations in New Westminster on the Expo Line . The Expo Line travels to Vancouver's neighbourhoods of downtown , Yaletown-False Creek , Gastown-Chinatown , and East Van , and beyond Vancouver to Burnaby and Surrey .

New Westminster Station being the most useful of the Expo Line stations in New Westminster. It's one block from the Riverfront area and close to shops and restaurants. Columbia Station is also located in downtown New West, but is further east and a longer walk from most attractions. The two stations are roughly 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver .

There are several bus routes that serve the city. None link directly with downtown Vancouver , but there are direct links with several transit centers in Burnaby , Coquitlam , Surrey and Richmond .

Bus routes are designed to connect New Westminster with Vancouver and other neighbouring municipalities so you may need a transfer depending on where you are going. Bus route #106 goes up 6th St, #112 follows Columbia and 12 Streets, #123 travels along 8th St and #155 cut along 6th Ave at the top of the city. New Westminster, 22nd Street, and Braid SkyTrain stations also have a number of buses that meet there.

The square was also the site of a bit of photographic history, where the iconic World War IUI photo, Wait for Me, Daddy , was taken. This Small-ship Cruise Line Just Announced 2 New All-suite Vessels Will Join Its Fleet

Windstar Cruises is scheduled to launch Star Seeker in 2025 and Star Explorer in 2026.

cruise travel new westminster

Courtesy of Windstar Cruises

Boutique small-ship cruise line Windstar Cruises is growing its fleet, adding two 224-passenger vessels — both acquisitions from Mystic Cruises —  in the next two years. Star Seeker is slated to make its debut in December 2025 and Star Explorer is scheduled to follow a year later in December 2026.

Star Seeker is under construction, while Star Explorer is currently sailing as Quark Expeditions' World Explorer. B oth ships will be reworked to include signature features of Windstar ships, from a watersports platform to Owners Suites with wraparound balconies to a whirlpool on the bow.

Dining, in particular, will be a main focus on the ships, as Windstar has a partnership with the James Beard Foundation. The ships' dining options spaces will be expanded to include the on-deck Star Grill, the casual Yacht Club café and lounge, and a re-imagined Amphora main dining room, which will now have outdoor seating.

“Our goal was to ensure these ships are unmistakably Windstar, and a significant amount of effort has gone into achieving this,” Christopher Prelog, Windstar Cruises’ president, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “We are thrilled for this expansion, building on the success of our game-changing Star Class in small-ship cruising with guests and travel partners, while offering new experiences. This growth reflects the dedication of our incredible crew and team, allowing us to broaden our destination portfolio and even bring one of our Wind Class sail ships back to Tahiti.”

Though both ships have ice-strengthened hulls capable of sailing in the polar regions, Windstar doesn't currently operate such itineraries, focusing primarily on the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific Islands. But these new ships may open doors to adventures in the years to come.

“As part of our company’s expanding portfolio, Windstar Cruises is poised for remarkable growth and an exciting future ahead," Andrew N. Todd, president and CEO of parent company Xanterra Travel Collection, said in a statement. "We’re excited about the possibilities of where Windstar will sail and the opportunities it brings our officers, crew and staff, and our guests.”

Itineraries and booking information for Star Seeker will be announced in June 2024. You can sign up for updates at windstarcruises.com/newships .

Travel | travel: how to visit new orleans during the annual jazz & heritage festival.

cruise travel new westminster

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival provides an overflowing musical feast each day for two weekends, Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. But the city doesn’t fall quiet when night descends and the fairgrounds close. Nighttime in New Orleans is always bright with music, but it never sounds fuller and sweeter than those 11 nights during the festival, which this year goes from April 25 through May 5.

Keith Abel, who gives music-related walking tours in the city, emphasizes that the special shows go nonstop, from the first night of the festival to the last. For the opening night, he recommends the Threadhead Cultural Foundation’s free concert in the New Orleans Botanical Garden. And each day you can leave the festival and walk two blocks to a street party called Sauvage Fest.

The final Sunday at 1 p.m. will feature a street naming, complete with a second line band, honoring influential piano player Professor Longhair. (It starts at the Old Caledonia Inn on Rampart Street and goes to 1738 Terpsichore Street.) “That’s so New Orleans,” Abel says. And after the festival’s finale, head to Papa Mali’s Poylester Birthday Party for a tribute to David Lindley featuring The Iguanas, Alvin Youngblood Hart and others at the intimate Chickie Wah Wah’s. “It’s as big as my house,” Abel says.

But there are dozens of clubs and theaters featuring performances by the musicians in town for the festival. George Porter Jr., the bass player for the Meters who now has his own band, explains that many New Orleans acts spend much of the year on the road because local clubs’ exclusivity requirements make it difficult to earn a living at home — but those requirements vanish during Jazz Fest so the venues are packed each night with visiting stars and local legends.

“There’s lots of gigs to be had for a lot of cats,” says Ivan Neville, son of Aaron Neville of the Neville Brothers and leader of Dumpstaphunk. “Everyone comes to play shows, which gives people so many different choices and different types of music. This is the most amazing fun-filled, musically enriching, soul-feeding 11 days, man. There’s nothing like it.”

He says the first super jam was organized years ago by Zigaboo Modeliste, the Meters’ drummer, for a Thursday night show at 2 a.m. at the old Howlin’ Wolf location (another club, The Republic, is now there). “There was a line around the block of people waiting to get in,” Neville recalls. “That was something to behold and led to promoters bringing together different configurations of musicians for super jams during Jazz Fest.”

Porter says most tourists just think Bourbon Street is New Orleans, “but the bands there just play the top hits so why even bother — that’s music you can hear anywhere in the world. You’ve got to get off Bourbon Street to clubs like the Maple Leaf Bar or Tipitina’s to really hear New Orleans.”

Neville’s favorite club is Tipitina’s, which has survived for nearly 50 years — the members of the band Galactic bought it in 2018 to help keep it alive — but he says visitors should also check out Chickie Wah Wah, Howlin’ Wolf, DBA and Blue Nile.

“If you’ve never been here you’ve got to experience everything you can,” he says. “You should eat at Jacque-Imo’s which is right next door to the Maple Leaf Bar and then go in there.”

With so much to choose from, perhaps the easiest way to build a schedule is to focus on four members of New Orleans musical royalty: Porter, Neville, Galactic, and Trombone Shorty … If you can keep up with them:  Porter, who is 76, will be playing 21 shows across that span, although in a concession to age he says this is the first year he’s not playing a show that starts after 1 a.m.

“He’s inspiring, if not insane,” says Robert Mercurio, Galactic’s bass player, who is plenty busy himself — playing with Galactic, with FiyaPowa (which includes Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, Neville and other members of Dumpstaphunk), and with Dragon Smoke. That band, which rarely plays outside Jazz Fest, features Mercurio, Moore Neville and Eric Lindell. They play on the home turf of Tipitina’s on the Tuesday between wekeends but Mercurio says they started years ago at a place called The Dragon’s Den off Frenchman Street which he recommends as “a really cool room.”

These days, of course, Mercurio is mostly playing at Tipitina’s, which is “a cultural center for New Orleans music lovers,” he says, which means the band feels tremendous responsibility as owners.

“People here view it as their bar, we are just stewards. Playing here was always magical but since we took over that feeling just has been elevated. Some stages just feel like a cold shower where you’re just constantly trying to find that right temperature. But the second we step on stage at Tipitina’s it’s like we’re just soaking in a beautiful warm bath.”

While Mercurio doesn’t get to see many other shows during these eleven days —“I’m either eating, sleeping, rehearsing or performing” — he sees plenty of other musicians. “Tipitina has a loose side door — you never know who is going to stop by and play,” he says, adding that, “we  stretch out and jam a little more than normal here.”

Neville says that all these musicians in all these configurations frequently choose songs they know so they can rehearse on their own. “If you do your homework you can show up for soundcheck knowing what’s going on,” he says. Still, part of the thrill is knowing things won’t always go smoothly in these jam sessions. “There’s still a bit of an edge, which adds to that feeling of spontaneity. Sometimes the fun is knowing there could be a train wreck happening … although hopefully I’m not involved in any of those train wrecks.”

While most of the best shows are in clubs, where there’s time for bands to jam and room for fans to dance, the one worthy theater show is Trombone Shorty’s eighth “Treme Threauxdown” at the Saenger Theater on Saturday, April 27.

With the deaths of many of New Orleans’ elders in the last decade (Alan Toussaint, Art and Charles Neville, and Dr. John), Shorty has, to some extent, become the face of the city’s music scene, deftly blending jazz, funk, soul, hip-hop and rock — all with a great balance of virtuosity and showmanship.

Shorty, whose real name is Troy Andrews, attracts an endless list of stars to the Threauxdown, which has featured Galactic and Dumpstaphunk but also Mavis Staples, Dr. John, Joan Jett, Gary Clark Jr, Usher, and Steve Miller as announced guests, plus spontaneous additions like Jon Batiste and Wyclef Jean. Among the guests announced for this Threauxdown are Paul Janeway from St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Big Freedia, and Marcus King.

“If I was visiting from out of town I wouldn’t go to the big theater shows because what makes New Orleans is the unique vibe in the bar and club scene,” says Mercurio. “Troy’s ‘Threauxdown’ is the only theater show I’d go to because he gets these great special guests — a cavalcade of stars — so it’s not a show you’ll ever see anywhere else. “

Andrews also hosts Shorty Fest at Tipitina’s on April 29, which, in addition to a concert featuring his band and Galactic offers a free outdoor “Cultural Block Party,” with performances by local brass bands and Mardi Gras Indians as well as food trucks.

Meanwhile, Neville has lined up at least dozen shows, at both theaters and clubs, beyond his official Jazz Fest gig. On April 29, he’ll join Soulive’s Eric Krasno and Anders Osborne for the first day of the NOLA Crawfish Festival, which runs outdoors at a club called The Broadside for three days between the Jazz Fest weekends.

“It’s a different little thing,” Neville says. “There’s jambalaya and crawfish and it starts in the afternoon and goes into the night. You can come get some crawfish and listen to music and then go back out.”

On the middle Wednesday, he’s bouncing to three different shows and on Saturday May 4 that FiyaPowa gig with Mercurio and Moore starts at 2 a.m. (which technically makes it May 5, but in New Olreans no one is counting). Neville will also take part in “Rejuvenation 50: A Celebration of the Meters,” at the Civic Theatre on May 2 sharing the stage with George Porter among others. Along the way he’ll also be jamming with everyone from Government Mule to Chuck Leavell, the keyboardist for the Allman Brothers and the Rolling Stones, to soul and gospel legend Irma Thomas to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Neville’s schedule is so busy that in the middle of our conversation he starts reorganizing his set lists on his phone and later he loses track of which gig is where.

“But I know I’ll be playing somewhere that day,” he says with a laugh. “You can look it up.”

CORAL SPRINGS — Westminster Academy senior quarterback Anthony Barbar made an impact on the field by setting school records while also displaying his leadership in the classroom and community. Barbar was recognized as one of the four overall winners of the Scholar-Athlete Award at the Brian Piccolo Chapter’s 49th Annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet at The Marriott Coral Springs Hotel and Convention Center on Wednesday night.

The Brian Piccolo Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame program ceremony honored 41 senior football players from Broward County schools for their academic achievements and volunteer work in the community.

Barbar was named Florida Dairy Farmers Independent Football Player of the Year this past season. He delivered a memorable senior campaign on the field to lead his team to a runner-up finish at the state championship. He was ranked as a top-five quarterback in all classifications and had single-season school records in passing yards (3,568), touchdown passes (40), completions (221) and completion percentage (71 percent). He also holds school records at quarterback for passing yards (8,407), touchdowns passes (86) and wins (29).

Barbar, who will play football at Wheaton College in Illinois, is the fourth recipient from Westminster Academy to earn the Scholar-Athlete overall winner award. One of those earlier Lions honorees was quarterback Danny Kanell, who starred at Florida State University and played in the NFL, received the honor back in 1992.

“This award holds immense meaning to me not just because of its prestige, but because of the values it represents,” Barbar said.

Barbar was also selected FACA Broward County Player of the Year, All-State First Team and Sun Sentinel All-County first team this past season. He is an Academic Honor Roll recipient for four years. He had a 3.691 weighted GPA and accumulated 1,005 community service hours. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and was active in the Gangway Youth Ministry at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Youth Leadership Broward.

“I am reminded of the responsibilities to continue striving for excellence, lead by example and make a positive impact on the life of others,” Barbar said. “I am inspired to carry forth the legacy of Brian Piccolo in everything that I do.”

Miramar safety Caleb Solomon, Dillard offensive lineman Khamari Griffin and Nova center Andito Wills Jr. also were all honored on stage as recipients of the Scholar-Athlete overall award.

Solomon, a Columbia University signee, was selected as a BCAA All-Star. He served as Senior Class President and finished in the top 10 percent of his class with a 4.59 weighted GPA. Griffin had a 4.4044 weighted GPA with 471 community service hours. He was on the Academic Honor Roll for four years and a member of the National Honor Society.

Wills Jr., who served as a team captain at center, was recognized as a BCAA All-Star. He had a 5.4 weighted GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society.

South Broward’s Brandon Rabasco, who received a preferred walk-on scholarship to the University of Florida, was selected as the Cerra Enterprises Special Teams Player of the Year. Rabasco served as a kicker and punter for the football team and was also a standout soccer player. He had a 4.3 weighted GPA and was a Straight A Honor Roll student.

“I put in a lot of hard work in school on and off the field,” Rabasco said. “I feel honored to represent my school and be here. I am excited to compete at the University of Florida.”

Western’s Brendan Leal was named BSN Sports Defensive Player of the Year. The Wagner University signee had a 4.9615 weighted GPA. He was a Sun Sentinel All-County First Team recipient and recorded the most tackles in District 4M. He was the Vice President of the National Honor Society Youth Group.

Fort Lauderdale’s Luke Hamill was selected as the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (U18) Sports Medicine Offensive Player of the Year. The BCAA All-Star played tight end as well as long snapper. He finished in the top 10 percent of his class with a 5.09 weighted GPA.

Blanche Ely’s Joshua Lloyd, a Sun Sentinel First Team All-County selection, represented the Tigers at the ceremony. The Western Michigan University signee was on the Principal’s Honor Roll and had a 4.54 weighted GPA.

Jerome and Stockar McDougle were both featured on stage as the Distinguished Americans at the ceremony. Jerome starred at Blanche Ely, won a national championship at the University of Miami and played defensive end in the NFL. Stockar, an offensive lineman, played at Deerfield Beach High School, Oklahoma University and was a first round draft pick in the NFL.

University of South Florida head coach Alex Golesh served as the keynote speaker. Brian Piccolo lost his battle with cancer at the age of 26. He played high school football at St. Thomas Aquinas, collegiate football at Wake Forest University and in the NFL with the Chicago Bears.

Nearly 30 Silversea cruise passengers get sick in gastrointestinal illness outbreak

cruise travel new westminster

More than two dozen Silversea Cruises passengers got sick in a gastrointestinal illness outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 28 of Silver Nova’s 633 guests reported being ill during a voyage that began on March 31, along with one of the vessel’s crew members. Their main symptom was diarrhea.

The health agency listed the causative agent as unknown.

Silversea notified guests and crew of the outbreak via announcements and encouraged them to report cases and practice “good hand hygiene,” the CDC said. The line also isolated those who were sick and implemented heightened cleaning and disinfection measures.

"The health and safety of our guests, crew, and the communities we visit are our top priority," Silversea told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. "To maintain an environment that supports the highest levels of health and safety onboard our ships, we implement rigorous cleaning procedures, many of which far exceed public health guidelines." The cruise began in Peru and is set to end in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Tuesday, according to CruiseMapper .

The news comes after about 100 Holland America Line passengers got sick in a norovirus outbreak earlier this year.

Cruise ship medical facilities: What happens if you get sick or injured (or bitten by a monkey)

The CDC logged 14 cruise ship outbreaks that met its threshold for public notification in 2023, more than any year between 2017 and 2019. Norovirus was listed as the causative agent in all but one.

The virus is often associated with cruises, but Ben Lopman, a professor of epidemiology at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health, told USA TODAY last year that cruises constitute a "tiny minority of norovirus outbreaks.” Most happen in health care settings like nursing homes.
