However, it can be hard to tell the difference between the two, as explained by SeatGeek’s former director of growth and communication, Will Flaherty.

He says, “The lines are blurring between a professional scalper and someone who sells their tickets. Back in the day, brokers would have to fax each other updated inventories. Now, that information is readily available to sellers online.”

Ticket reselling can be profitable, although it might not seem so to some people. After all, why would someone buy a ticket for $1,000 when it was being sold for $700 earlier? Well on the one hand, if the concert tickets are for a famous artist, they sell out quickly as fans who need help getting their hands on tickets are ready to buy them at a higher price to hear their favorite artist live. On the other, if there is a last-minute rush for an event, people hurry to buy tickets and are willing to pay resellers a higher price.

• The easiest way to sell tickets is either at the venue if you have permission or online through a ticketing platform such as SeatGeek, StubHub or VividSeats.

Why some major artists are suddenly canceling shows, and in some cases entire tours

A series of tour cancellations and changes by big-name artists has sparked questions about whether the post-pandemic live music boom could be cooling, as consumer spending fatigue meets elevated ticket prices.

On Friday, Jennifer Lopez announced she was canceling her 2024 tour , citing a desire to spend more time with her family. Meanwhile, the Black Keys announced they were abandoning a stadium tour in favor of a series of shows at smaller venues.

Both tours had recently become the subject of social media fodder, namely screenshots showing empty venues at select tour dates. (NBC News could could not directly verify their authenticity.)

Indeed, some of the evidence of a slowdown is anecdotal. SeatGeek said in an email that the average resale ticket price to attend a summer concert is down to $213 from $257 around this time last year. The company suggested some of the decline could be attributed to the absence of megatours on par with Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” and Beyoncé’s “Renaissance” outings last year.

For artists whose popularity has crescendoed, there appears to be plenty of demand — and high prices. The average resale price for Olivia Rodrigo’s “Guts” tour is $571, and the next-highest is $409 to see Morgan Wallen, according to SeatGeek data first reported by Axios .

Many of those tours are being sold through Ticketmaster and its parent Live Nation. And prior to facing landmark accusations that it is a monopoly , a claim it denies, Live Nation reported its biggest first quarter ever, with $3.8 billion in revenues. Its concerts business alone was up 26% to $2.9 billion, while “estimated fans” globally were up more than 20%, and up 42% in North America.

Yet official government data points to the makings of a return to a more normal pace for live music event sales after a post-pandemic boom. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last month that movie and concert admissions prices climbed just 3.4% year over year through April, the lowest reading since 2021 and the second-consecutive month showing a slowdown.

Dave Clark, editor of Ticket News, which tracks the live entertainment industry, said the period of explosive live music growth following pandemic reopenings may in hindsight be seen as an aberration: People were simply more eager — and more financially able — to go to as many shows as they could after months cooped up indoors.

This year, Clark said, a reckoning may be emerging.

“The days where there was enough demand to sell out arenas at top dollar just isn’t there in this live events economy — outside of people like Taylor Swift who can sell whatever they want wherever they want,” he said.

At a time when many consumers are struggling to pay for basic necessities, he said, “people are seeing some of the prices they’re asking and just saying, ‘Hard pass.’”

Another factor may be a supply issue, Clark added: too many acts trying to tour at once, or too many times. In the pre-streaming era, bands would go on tour as a way of marketing an album. These days, he said, it’s reversed, since the returns on recorded music have shrunk dramatically.

“Now they’re making records to sell the tour,” he said. “That paradigm has a lot to do with it. It’s just a very overloaded market.”

The Black Keys did just release a new album, and its debut single hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart in March.

Still, the rock duo announced it would cancel and reschedule its summer touring plans, switching from arenas to other venues that provide a more “intimate experience,” according to the band. The new dates have not yet been announced.

The Black Keys aren’t the only group that may be falling victim to costly concert fatigue.

Pop-rock band 311 announced it had canceled upcoming European tour dates due to the “rising costs of touring overseas,” which made completing certain portions of the tour “unfeasible.”

Other stars including Pink and Justin Timberlake have also recently canceled specific show dates, while the Jonas Brothers recently postponed their upcoming European tour , though none officially cited financial concerns as reasons for doing so.

“I think with all that competition for fan dollars, it was obviously natural that some artists were going to lose,” said Bill Werde, director of the Syracuse University Bandier Program for Recording and Entertainment Industries.

There are still plenty of large-scale tours planned for this summer that, so far, appear to be unaffected by flagging demand. Hootie & the Blowfish have 48 dates booked this year, while Dave Matthews Band is slated for 34. Other top acts hitting the road include Maroon 5, Zac Brown Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kenny Chesney and Chris Stapleton.

But experts say recent economic trends in the live-music industry, especially the type of consolidation the Justice Department is now targeting, have translated into fewer smaller-sized venues.

That’s made it more difficult for a given tour date to make financial sense for the artist, venue and promoter.

“Some shows, they can’t afford to drop prices; they can’t afford to wait to try to sell out the rest of the building,” Clark said.

If there is uncertainty about all stakeholders being able to at least break even, he said, the show might get canceled.

Such realities have collided with a more circumspect concertgoer. Brittney D’Mello, a 23-year-old K-pop fan from New Jersey who works in corporate marketing, posted to X about her frustrations with the current touring landscape.

“The tickets are too expensive,” D’Mello said. “There’s only a SMALL amount of people (10%) that will spend $500+ on vip/floor/premium,” she said. “The rest of us have budgets and won’t spend $100 on nosebleeds,” she said, referring to seats that are typically the farthest away from the stage.

“Everyone is touring this year … and we only have money for 2-3 concerts MAX,” she added.

In a follow-up interview with NBC News, D’Mello said she simply decided to cap her concert budget.

“I will only go see two artists that are my tried-and-true favorite artists,” she said. “But I won’t be casually going to concerts anymore. And after going to concerts twice, I think that’s where I stop.”

Taylor Swift fans are selling their tickets for the singer’s next run of London shows – just days after a foiled terror plot at the Vienna leg of the Eras Tour.

Despite the immense popularity of the concerts , which Austrian officials expected to be attended by 65,000 people within the stadium itself and a further 30,000 outside, some fans may have thought twice about attending after a suspect in the foiled plot said he wanted “to kill as many people as possible”.

Ticket resell website Viagogo now has dozens of tickets for London dates listed for prices between £500 to as much as £5,000.

A significant amount of tickets for the typically sold-out shows have also become available on Ticketmaster.

One Taylor Swift fan revealed on Twitter/X that they had been left so frightened by the foiled plot that they will not even step foot in the capital, let alone Wembley Stadium, where the concerts are taking place.

They wrote: “Having to cancel my trip to London to see Taylor Swift because people can’t just not be a**holes is insane, my anxiety won’t even let me think of stepping foot in London and even worse the stadium.”

A second similarly shared: “It’s so easy for me to just cancel my weekend rn that’s how unsafe I feel, but then I think of all the money I’ve spent and I’m just trying to put a bit of faith in the security .” [sic]

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the city will “carry on” to host the five shows between the 15th and 20th of August after the American superstar’s Vienna dates were cancelled on Wednesday.

The cancellation followed the arrest of two teenagers, aged 19 and 17, on Tuesday and the questioning of a 15-year-old in connection to the terror plot.

The 19-year-old is reported to be the main suspect in the case and had previously pledged allegiance to the current leader of the Islamic State online.

Materials to produce a bomb were discovered in his home, while evidence of support for the terrorist group Al-Qaeda was found in the other suspect’s.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer defended the decision to cancel the shows but acknowledged fans’ disappointment.

“I understand very well that those who wanted to experience the concert live are very sad,” Nehammer said at a press conference.

“Mums and dads are looking after their daughters and sons, who were full of enthusiasm and anticipation for this concert. But it’s also important that in such serious moments as now, it’s inevitable that safety comes first.”

Authorities announced today that a third suspect, aged 18, had been arrested last night in connection with the plot.

The foiled terror plot – in which the main suspect planned to commit suicide with explosives – comes after 22 people, including children, lost their lives in a similar incident at an Ariana Grande concert in 2017.

Swift expressed her concern about playing to large audiences in the wake of the Manchester Arena incident.

“I was completely terrified to go on [the Lover Tour] this time because I didn’t know how we were going to keep 3 million fans safe over seven months,” she told Elle magazine in 2019.

“There was a tremendous amount of planning, expense, and effort put into keeping my fans safe.”

But while some fans have decided not to attend shows, others have admitted that despite being frightened, they will still attend.

Lorelei Petchu, president of the Taylor Swift society at University College London, told Reuters: “Last night I was panicking a little bit. We did consider selling our tickets, but we calmed down.

“We have seen the statements that have been put out and are feeling good about going again.”

Another undeterred fan said they are convinced that the upcoming London shows will be even safer now.

“Security is gonna be ramped up even more now [and] be safer than it would have been,” they wrote on Twitter/X.

“Don’t let them win by scaring us in to not living our lives [and] don’t miss out on this experience if you can go!”

Other social media users expressed their hope that security will be tight at the upcoming concerts.

“I sincerely hope that security for the upcoming Taylor Swift concerts is on high alert,” one Twitter/X user wrote to the official Downing Street account.

Taylor Swift 's army of fans has sprung into action following the cancellation of her Vienna concerts - with UK-based fans selling tickets to the star's London show to her disappointed fans in Austria.

On Wednesday, Swift's three performances in Vienna, Austria, were cancelled amid fears of a terror attack . Event organiser Barracuda Music said there had been “confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium”.

Swift is due to return to the UK for a series of concerts and is next due to play five dates at Wembley Stadium between 15 August and 20 August.

As Scotland Yard is said to be looking at “all the intelligence” ahead of the gigs, kind-hearted fans are selling their tickets at face value so those who missed out on the Vienna shows can still experience a Taylor Swift concert.

Isabella Lindop, 18, from Kent, is selling a VIP ticket she bought for £599 to a fellow Swiftie who has missed out - for £400.

She told Yahoo News UK she was "devastated" and "in disbelief" when she heard about the cancellation of the Vienna gigs.

"The Eras tour felt like such a safe happy experience for me and was the place I felt safest," she said. "I was so upset that so many people would not get to experience that because of the disgusting cruelty of some people, however, I completely understood and supported the decision to cancel the shows as it was keeping everyone safe and was unfortunately necessary.

"I decided to sell my ticket because I've been lucky enough to have already been several times and am going to the other London shows and know how magical the Eras tour is. Everyone who was supposed to be in Vienna deserves that positive experience."

She said she would have been too anxious to attend the concert herself, but was keen her ticket went to someone who was facing having to miss out.

She also paid tribute to the community of Taylor Swift fans, saying: "In the years I’ve been a Swiftie it’s always felt like such an incredible community to me. Everyone has come together to support each other, especially following the attack in Southport. It really shows the sense of community Taylor has built and increases my trust in society."

Sarah Gangl, 30, was one of thousands of Swifties who would have seen the musician perform in Vienna. Gangl, a student, told Yahoo News she was looking forward to her first-ever Swift concert and won't be able to attend the London concerts next week.

The news of the cancellation of the concerts gave her “very mixed feelings”. “On the one hand, I’m very sad that the concert isn’t taking place,” she said. “On the other hand, I’m glad that it was cancelled and that something worse was prevented.”

Like other Swifties, Gangl made items to trade and gift to each other. She said: “I made about 20 bracelets and 80 rings by myself to give as gifts. I’ve also been planning my outfit since April.”

On Thursday morning, the day of the concert she was supposed to attend, he got dressed like she planned to and joined hundreds of other Swifties to hang out outside on Corneliusgasse (Cornelius Street) in Vienna, where they cried, sang, and danced,

She said: “It was hard but also a bit like therapy. In the evening, I spontaneously organised a Taylor Swift party, and we watched the Eras tour film.”

Police monitoring intelligence

Police are monitoring intelligence ahead of Taylor Swift's return to the UK for more concerts, with there said to be no reason to think suggest that matters being investigated in Vienna will have an impact on her London gigs.

A 19-year-old suspect was arrested in Ternitz, south of Vienna, and a second person in the Austrian capital.

The Austria Press Agency reported that Franz Ruf, the public security director at Austria’s interior ministry, said authorities were aware of “preparatory actions” for a possible attack “and also that there is a focus by the 19-year-old perpetrator on the Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna”.

Ruf said the 19-year-old had pledged an oath of allegiance to the Islamic State group.

Asked on LBC about the arrests of suspected extremists in Vienna and what this could mean for the final leg of Swift’s UK tour, policing minister Diana Johnson said: “Clearly, the police will be looking at all the intelligence and making decisions, they risk assess every event that happens in this country, and that’s something for the police."

She said Labour's commitment to Martyn's Law - which is named after 2017 Manchester Arena bombing victim Martyn Hett and is designed to help protect venues against terror attacks - would be brought forward by the government.

A Met Police spokesman said: “London plays host to a significant number of very high profile events each year with millions of visitors having a safe and enjoyable experience.

“The Met works closely with venue security teams and other partners to ensure there are appropriate security and policing plans in place.

“There is nothing to indicate that the matters being investigated by the Austrian authorities will have an impact on upcoming events here in London. As always, we will continue to keep any new information under careful review.”

Singers-songwriters Ryan Bingham and Jamey Johnson will lead an all-star cast of musicians for the “Life is a Carnival: Last Waltz Tour ’24.” A tribute to The Band’s historic farewell concert in 1976, the three-hour show will happen at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22.

About 2,100 tickets will be available for the show. Not only will it celebrate the legendary concert held nearly five decades ago on Thanksgiving Day in San Francisco, but it’s also intended to honor the legacy of The Band co-founder Robbie Robertson, according to a news release.

In Los Angeles, a massive “Life is a Carnival: A Musical Celebration of Robbie Robertson” show will headline Kia Forum on Oct. 17. It will feature Eric Clapton, Elvis Costello, Eric Church and a parade of other major names — including Bingham, Johnson and most (if not all) of the same players on the tour coming to the Boise market.

If that's not enough, on Sunday, Aug. 25, the fair will offer a musical doubleheader. The renowned Mexican band known for its distinctive blend of Norteño music with accordion and saxophone sounds, Geru y Su Legión 7 , will perform in The Big Tent, while Christian singer Tauren Wells with special guest Consumed By Fire take the Texas Roadhouse Concert Series Stage shortly after at 7 p.m

Additionally, fairgoers can expect more than 50 family-friendly activities such as the adrenaline-packed Thrill Ville, and more than a dozen performance locations hosting specialty acts, livestock competitions, live music, and unique one-day events. From the Largest Pumpkin and Watermelon Contest to Beerfest, cow milking demonstrations, Freedy Farm Bureau, a Gospel Music Showcase, Ohio Valley Wrestling, and more, the variety of offerings is sure to make everyone smile.

Admission to the fair and sale of all unlimited ride wristbands ends one hour before posted outside closing time. Fairgoers under 18 years old entering after 6 p.m. must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian 21 years of age or older. Proof of age is required. IDs will be verified at the gate.
