Yes, the place where the famous gabbar scenes from Sholey movie are shot!! As it happens to be just around 50km from Bangalore, it’s a well suited for a weekend getaway. And also this is the perfect place for a person who is a beginner in trekking. Thanks to my friend Neeta’s sis for suggesting this place. On the night of Saturday while coming back from Commercial Street, suddenly she said lets go to Ramanagara tomorrow!! We all said yes in union and it was decided.

Next day we woke up around 4 am and we were ready by 5!! No tension of transportation, as we had car :P We started from home by 5.30. It’s an awesome combination of early morning long ride in a car with cool breeze kissing your face and a sound track playing in the background!! :D I had a smile on my face throughout the ride.

Once we crossed Bidadi, we were looking for sign boards which can direct us to Ramanagar. Since local call it as “Ramadevara Betta”, all direction board had this name instead of “Ramanagara Betta”. Now, as our stomach were making noise, we decided to finish our breakfast and then climb the hill. While driving in Mysore road highway one must stop @ Kamath Lokaruchi to have a delicious south Indian dishes. Immediately after Gousia Engineering College we saw a sign board on our left hand side saying 13km to hill. There was an arch to our right side which led to hill. We didn’t want to listen shouting from our stomach. So we drove extra 8km to stop the noise of hunger. But we were not sure whether they will have breakfast ready so early. With complete trust on Google, which said breakfast starts at 6am in here, we went there around 6.30. By the look on their face, we understood that we are the first one to do batting. :P Thankfully they had 2 to 3 items. We had our all-time favorite idli with hot coffee. After an awesome batting between hand and mouth, we took u turn around 7 towards Ramanagar.

We passed the arch and the road to hill was manageable. 1km before the foot of “Ramadevara Betta” temple, there is an entrance gate, which is supposed to open @8. But we reached there by 7.30 only. The gate is helpful if you are planning to take your car till the entrance of temple. We parked our car near the gate, not because gate was closed, but because we wanted to walk. While walking we captured the moments in “DSLR” :P Once we reached the entrance we saw a writing that said 400 (may be 300 :P, little confused) steps to reach the GOD. Half of the trek is climbing stairs only.

We took short breaks in between to pose for a camera, but the actual reason is of course to take rest :P. The view from wherever we stopped was great. Every view at the stops we made, was like view from different floors of a building. Finally we reached the temple. We took almost 45min to reach till there. Temple was still closed. There was a huge rock to our left hand side. We didn’t know the exact place where Sholay was shot. But whichever rock we saw we said may be there!!

My expectation was like will have an awesome view once we reach near temple same as shivagange. View from there was good. Not that amazing. There was a huge rock behind the temple. But we were not sure whether we can reach there or not. Then we saw 3 guys taking selfies at the edge of that rock. Thanks to them! Otherwise we would have returned from there thinking that , that is the last stop.

Then we found a way next to temple which was not visible from far. While following the path we found a point to our left side from where we were able to see another side of Ramanagar. The view was nice. It was almost bird eye view point. Obvious that we had some photography session. Since the sun was raising, we thought of continuing our photo session while coming back. Then we reached the place where those guys were taking selfie. We also took selfies. At that moment we saw them again. But now little above. Oooo there is still more to climb!!! Then we hurried to that place.

We saw few foreigners coming. They had 2 big dogs!! It’s still a wonder to me how foreigners treat traveling. I feel for them traveling is not a run away from the day to day huddles. It’s their part of life. Anyway we said hi to them and resumed our climb. Next part was little difficult compared to the climb we did till now. It’s a slant climb, where they made steps on the rocks. Thanks to the one who put the iron bar to hold on to. Otherwise its little difficult to climb as the gap between steps is more. After 5 to 10 min we reached the top of ramadevara betta. Finally!!!

Our guides (three guys :P) were going back. As there were no other people, we were the only left ones. It was very peaceful. The view from up there was awesome. Sky was clear. This was a real bird eye view point. There was not much breeze. It was just kissing us instead of pushing us down :P It was really a best option for a weekend getaway from Bangalore for one day(actually you can say half day :P). We explored the summit. We found a small lake there, which was perfect spot for photography :P We spent an hour up on the hill. Obvious that half of the time went for giving pose to the camera :P As Sun was coming over our head, we started to climb down.

I left one part of me there only, so that it can take me to different spots of ramadevara betta whenever I think of it. After half an hour to 45 min we were back to our car. We drove back with a satisfied smile on our face. It was a short and sweet, fun filled trip with lots of photography.

Ramanagara was called Closepet during pre-independence times, named so after Sir Barry Close who built the old bridge here. Ramanagara district was carved out of the erstwhile Bengaluru Rural district in 2007. The district is surrounded by Bangalore Urban and Tumakuru in the north, Mandya in the west, Chamarajanagar in the south and Tamil Nadu state in the west. Cauvery, Arkavathi & Kanva are the three rivers flowing in the District.

Ramanagara is known for its Channapatna toys and sericulture. It houses one of the biggest silk markets in India and the silk produced in this region forms the main raw material for the famous Mysore silk sarees. Ramanagara is the largest market for silk cocoons in Asia. Therefore, it is also known as “Silk City’’.

Being a short drive away makes Ramanagara a popular weekend getaway for the Bengalureans and is also a perfect stopover enroute to Mysuru/Kodagu from Bengaluru. Ramanagara is a popular base for many adventure sports/ team building activities. It is famed for rock climbing and is also called the Mecca of Rock Climbers. The rocks and boulders were the perfect setting for the Hindi blockbuster movie Sholay which was shot on these picturesque rocks. Trekking at Savanadurga and Mekadaatu is also quite popular. It also has a film city located in Bidadi which is also famous as an industrial hub. And while in Bidadi, try the lip-smacking Bidadi Thatte Idli which is a larger and flatter variant of the traditional south Indian Idli but equally delicious.

About Ramanagaram: RAMANAGARAM (48 km from Bangalore) situated in a valley surrounded by  rocky hillocks was a sub-divisional headquarters from 1884. It became a taluk headquarters in 1928, and the place was named Ramanagaram in 1949 . It is the biggest cocoon marketing centre now. It is spread on either banks of the Arkavati and the old bridge connecting the town was built by Sir Barry Close, the Resident at the Royal Court of Mysore. Hence, the place was named as Closept, as mentioned in Persian as well as Kannada record, erected by Diwan Purnaiah in 1800. The township was also founded around the same time for greater security of the high road, which then passed through a wild forest route.       The present name, of Ramanagaram finds its origin from the once existed village Ramagiri at the foothills of the Ramadevarabetta. The present town has an Agrahara on the left bank of the Arkavati with a temple of Arkeshwara built in later Vijayanagara style. The temple is said to have been renovated by Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, facing west and has a Garbhagriha, a spacious Navaranga and has an inner Prakara. The Linga was reinstalled about four years ago. The annual Jatra is held on Phalguna Shuddha Poornima, when more than 2,000 people assemble. Beside this temple, to the left, is the Prasannambadevi shrine and to the right is another small shrine of Venugopalaswamy.

Depends on your fitness but it should not take more than 2 hours in total.

' src=

Is the night trekking allowed here. Plz help. If yes. What would be the ideal time to start the trekking

Night trekking is allowed but sometimes local people give you a trouble. The ideal time to start the trek will be around 10 o clock but be careful during the monsoons. It might not be fun at all to trek in the rain and spend time at the peak seeing no beauty

Kunagalu Betta Ramanagara | A Lovely Trek Near Bangalore

Kunagalu Betta

Kunagalu Betta, Ramanagara – Hey, where we are going this weekend? not the touristy places in Bangalore for sure, so where? why not do something offbeat and try out the trekking around Bangalore? this Kunnagalu betta looks good, near to Bangalore and also its rainy season around, let’s go!

Kunagalu Betta Overview

if you are bored of the same Bangalore touristy places, then heads towards Bangalore-Mysore road and reach the famous Ramanagara, Kunagalu Betta is quite easy to reach from Bangalore. At Ramanagara cross the level crossing next to the railway station, and keep driving till you see this hill to your left.

or you can follow Google maps and reach the base of the village, It’s a small nice village and you will immediately start feeling the freshness in the air.

However, being the rural part of Karnataka, expect a language barrier if you do not know the local language, I will recommend having your awesome Kandigan friends standby in case you need to communicate in the village.

Betta in Kanada means “small hill” and true to its meaning it’s a small hill, if you do the full trek from the base of the village, you need to cover approx 2.5Km to reach the top or if you drive your 2 wheeler or 4 wheeler to the uphill, you can cover almost 40% of the trek, the choice is yours!

Kunagalu Betta Trek is it worth?

it depends on you, yes it is in all sense, however, I will say the place, trek, and experience come alive around Monsoon, due to greenery all around, during summer or dry season, it may look like a dried up trek. I went in the month of August and hence, I found it refreshing, fun to do, and definitely recommend to you or even for a family trek near Bangalore.

You will get a nice early morning road trip from Bangalore to Ramangara on the infamous Bangalore-Mysore highway. I think and I am optimistic in 2 years from now the load on the existing highway will reduce and it will be more fun to drive due to the new expressway coming up.

Give Me More Tips

For the best and enjoyable experience, please either trek in the early time or in the evening time, I will definitely say, avoid the late morning, afternoon and late afternoon, it will be super hot and possibly dry.

Carry snacks, water, and sunglasses with a cap, because for obvious reasons. You can have a light breakfast on Bangalore-Mysore highway like A2B, Vatika, etc. The most important point is that please do not litter the place, carry your trash with yourself and dump it at a safer location.

The last tip is that while you return, you may visit the main Ramanagara town and search on google for the hotel name “Janardhan” it is a lot famous for the authentic local sweet of Mysore Pak, I bet you will experience the best Mysore Pak from here. However, expect a crowd and slow service.

Another Offbeat Place Near Kunagalu Betta?

Yes, if you are done with one trek, I am sure you won’t be doing another else there is Ramanagara Ramdevara Betta on the opposite side of Bangalore- Mysore highway, which is more organized, maintained, and easy to hike, it is the exact spot where the movie Sholey was shot.

However, if you are looking for more relaxed and closer to Bangalore then this lovely Manchanbele Dam is the one to go and enjoy the beauty

New docuseries follows life-threatening trek through Amazon jungle

T he showrunners behind a new docuseries that follows a group of travelers on a life-threatening 5,000 mile trek through the Amazon jungle have lifted the lid on the footage that was too gruesome to make it into the exposé.

Back in 2012, a man named Mickey Grosman announced that he was going to lead a hike across South America in a bid to raise money and awareness for cancer  research - and filmed the entire thing in the hopes of making a documentary.

Along the way, the group faced a slew of terrifying near-death experiences and serious injuries, and came face-to-face with dangerous wildlife and hostile indigenous tribes - and many began to wonder if they'd ever make it out alive.

The footage from the wild exhibition recently fell into the hands of documentary makers Erin Gamble and David Freid, who combed through over 700 hours of video and quickly realized: the rest of the world needs to see this.

They have now turned it into a docuseries, entitled Expedition From Hell: The Lost Tapes, which will premiere on Max and Discovery this Sunday, May 12, at 10pm EST/PST.

Ahead of its release, the pair sat down with DailyMail.com to discuss the series - and they teased some of the horrific things that the hikers endured.

They also detailed one of the incidents that was so awful they decided not to include it in the show.

'You cannot go from one coast to the other across the Amazon jungle unless you are nuts. It's very dangerous,' Erin dished.

'They go through areas that are completely [untouched]. There is no trail whatsoever.

'There's a number of things that happen that are physically dangerous pretty much every day.'

'People are very much traumatized physically throughout the course of this thing,' David added. '[Some] get very close [to dying].'

When asked about the parts that were too horrific to show in the series, Erin recalled one clip in which the group brutally killed a monkey to eat.

'Some of the hunting scenes can be a little bit difficult, especially when they get into areas where there wasn't a lot to eat,' she explained.

'It's not in the show, but at one point they needed food, and so they killed and roasted a monkey. That was really hard for everybody to watch.'

The pair joked that the footage contained numerous clips of 'grown adults having diarrhea in the jungle' and 'an incredible amount of gross foot and private part shots.'

Spending weeks in the jungle while having to get your own food, water, shelter, and fire makes for 'a fascinating series of misfortunes and ineptitudes that quickly turned what was to be an already challenging expedition into a near constant struggle to survive,' per the show's description.

Footage from the trailer shows people scaling down an enormous waterfall and swimming through a raging river.

Other parts feature various members of the group struggling to stay on foot amid a horrific storm, falling down a steep hill, and even writhing in pain as someone held a candle to a blister.

Another clip sees the group crossing a rickety old bridge - when suddenly it breaks and one of the members begins to crash through the bottom.

During their chat with DailyMail.com, David and Erin also teased that the adventure involved 'a kidnapping, a prison escape, and a missing person.'

The group had very little contact with the outside world throughout the trek, which made it all the more dangerous.

'Mickey carried a satellite phone and theoretically, that should be able to connect them to the emergency extraction system that exists,' Erin explained.

'The problem with the satellite phone is that it is intermittent when it works - the canopy in the jungle can make it really unreliable - and at the time when they were doing this, it also ran off of batteries.

'So there were times when he would run out of batteries or there were times when it just wouldn't register because they were in areas where it couldn't register.

'There's a lot of the trip [where] they really were absolutely beyond the reach of civilization.'

David added that Mickey told the group there was a button on the phone that would send a GPS marker to people back home in case of emergencies - but he wasn't so convinced that it actually worked.

'This button on this sat phone kind of gave people a false sense of security. We asked [participants of the hike during our interviews], "What do you think would have happened if you pressed a button? A black hawk helicopter would just come down through the canopy, and you'd be just away to some local hospital?"' David explained.

'The more you dig into that the more you realize they really didn't know what would happen [if he pushed the button], and more than likely, there was no helicopter coming to save them. It's just this button on a sat phone.'

The duo explained that as they started to decipher the hundreds of tapes to turn into a docuseries - most of which were unlabeled and out of order - they started to question Mickey's true motives

'This isn't just the story of an expedition. This isn't just the story of a group of guys that are marching from one coast to another,' Erin explained.

'Who is this guy really? Was he somebody with purely noble motivations?' David remembered wondering.

'You learn early on that he had a form of melanoma cancer and he's had cancer in his family so it is an important topic for him.

'A lot of [the group] came onto the trip under the auspices that they were doing something for charity.

'But as it unfolds, his motivations do become a little questionable, and things go sideways.

'The mere fact that he brought three cameras into the jungle, I think says a lot about his motivation.'

David said it was obvious that Mickey would do anything to get the perfect shot, and that it seemed he didn't fully grasp how much danger they were really in.

'Was he worried? No. I think he thought in the back of his mind, no matter what he could save the day, he could make things work,' David continued.

'And if something did go wrong as long as the camera was rolling, it was okay.'

Erin also shared: 'Someone who traveled with Mickey on the expedition said Mickey's mentality was, "If you send a soldier up a hill, and the soldiers head gets blown off, that was a good use of that person, because now you know where the enemy is."'

David admitted that he even wondered if everything they saw on the tapes was real.

'There's this one shot from the bottom of a really steep ravine, maybe 100 feet [down],' he revealed.

'The camera is looking up at the bottom of a bridge. This is high production value stuff - somebody went out of their way to set up the shot.

'They're looking up and they're panning across in a tight shot of the bridge - and then the camera stops.

'And right when the camera stops, one of the members of the expedition falls through the bridge. To me, that made me wonder if everything I was seeing was real.

'The deeper you go into this story, the more episodes you watch, every layer unfolds another mystery and it really isn't what you think it is.'

'We discovered that there was a much deeper question of what actually happened on this expedition,' Erin added.

'A lot of the the series is sort of dealing with our own journey to try to understand what actually happened, what is true and what isn't true.

'Someone asked us, "Did you get all of your questions answered at the end of this project?" The truth is, we got answers that we didn't know we had questions to.'

No one actually finished the entire 5,000-mile hike except for Mickey - or so he says.

To see the full extent of what they endured, make sure to tune in to Discovery or Max to watch the docuseries when it premieres this Sunday.
