I’ve put together 101 of the best travel quotes as a reminder, motivation, and remembrance for the reasons why we travel.

I’m not just talking about the sightseeing and beach vacations. Travel is about the journey as much as the beautiful destination.

We learn about the world by experiencing new cultures and ways of living, in turn learning about ourselves.

I’ve been traveling the world for a few years – Will has been traveling for over 9 years – and the rest of the Broke Backpacker crew has put quite a dent in their passports too. I think these awesome quotes about traveling highlight some of the magnificent journeys and lessons we’ve experienced along the way.

This is one of my favorite quotes about traveling. A lot of people think that one travels to escape life, or that long-term travelers are running away from reality. The way I see it – sure – maybe vacations are a quick escape from the real world, but traveling is a way to embrace life’s grandest adventures. Traveling is a way for life not to escape us.

I love this traveling the world quote from Cesare Pavese. Having been on the road for the last few years, he nailed my experience spot on. Nothing is certain – except air, sleep, the sea, the sky – but that is what traveling is about: embracing the unknown and trusting the process. The way I see it, the only thing for certain is what is happening in the now.

This is one of the most beautiful travel quotes. Meeting so many new people, making new friends and even finding a second family, has to be one of the best aspects of traveling. Having traveled quite a bit, I can say that having multiple homes is definitely an amazing feeling, although it can also create some distance between you and your original home.

I think this is one of my favorite quotes about travel. Having been to 30 or so countries, and plenty of destinations among them, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that happiness does   not come from beautiful destinations any more than the concept that money can buy happiness…

It’s easy to assume that if money can’t buy happiness, surely experiences can, but you can be in the most beautiful place on earth having some crazy experience, and not be happy. We tend to always be in search of the next big thing – the most beautiful beach or bigger mountain – without realizing that it is the journey there that matters, not the destination.

Happiness is hard to define of course, but I think happiness lies in your outlook and present state of mind. To be happy is to be in the present moment, no matter what you own or where you are.

This is one of my favorite travel quotes! It reminds me of something I read in the book  Shantaram , about an ex-convict on the run and his adventures in India. In the book, he was given similar advice: to surrender to India and accept his experience for what it was.

You have to surrender to the chaos and enjoy/endure the experiences as they come. While this is applicable to many aspects of life, it is definitely applicable to travel. You can’t try to force itineraries and plans or work hard to fulfill some high expectations in your mind. Doing so will only tire and disappoint you.

I can relate to this quote about travel quite well actually. The longer and more that I travel, the more I find myself self-analyzing and observing my own thought and emotional processes.

Traveling has a funny way of throwing you out into the world with the intention of discovering more about everything around you, only to realize you will discover far more about yourself. It is why traveling can be the most rewarding form of introspection.

I can relate to these words quite a bit as I try to find the balance between preparing and planning for the future, reaching goals, and just enjoying the ride and staying present in the moment.

Having goals and an endpoint in sight is good; however, I don’t think it will be as satisfying if you don’t enjoy the moments that take you there. If you only focus on the destination you’ll miss everything that matters – the journey along the way.

Starting Going Awesome Places and turning it into a full time job sounded crazy (still kind of is) but we carved our own way through it. Sure there are parallel paths but I’d like to think we’ve blazed our own trail.

I don’t always travel that light with our packing lists but this is a great short travel quote that’s always the forefront of my mind. I always ask myself, “do I really need this?”.

Here, I’m in the middle of Tokyo with the original Peak Design 5L Sling that makes a great light travel set up.

Sticking to the road less travelled can be the most rewarding. Here are a couple of quotes that push me to always incorporate something a little different on my trips.

It’s so easy to follow the crowd and be sucked into what everyone’s doing on Instagram or places that are the most popular. I’ve always found that the best trips are the ones that most people don’t know about.

The late Anthony Bourdain was someone that truly understood travel. He was such a great storyteller and this quote reminds me of my earlier days when I was backpacking around Europe and just not having a care in the world.

I have never heard the quote, but it makes a lot of sense. Good for you to get out and explore! To me these adventures are way more valuable than fancy clothes or other “stuff”.

I can appreciate the quote but don’t do much traveling. Of course, anything is possible!

You make very good points and I agree with you. Travel broadens our lives. I do enjoy travelling but I hate the planning and getting ready. Once I’m on the plane/car/boat/whatever I am ok. And I’ve been travelling since I was 6 years old when I left my home country of China. Sometimes I have to remind myself that when I feel like a stick in the mud. I had an experience, too going to Paris a few years ago. I had to buy 3 sets of tickets. It’s a long story but we got reimbursed.

I love this quote and this sentiment because travel broadens our world views and exposes us to so much beauty that would have escaped us otherwise if we’d stayed home.

For many people, getting in the car is part of life. We use it to go to work. To go for groceries. Appointments. Meetings. Picking up the kids. Grabbing a Happy Meal on the way home…

It’s a way of getting where we need to be. A mere container on wheels. And, unless new and shiny, provides similar comfort to the cardboard box we used as a child to go on grand adventures.

Back then, we traveled as far as our imaginations would take us. In just one day, we could visit the zoo, the beach, and even the jungle, before heading back home in time for tea.

Why Should You Take More Road Trips?

In a world of continuous clock-watching, it’s more important than ever to be spontaneous. And this should definitely involve road trips. Preferably with good company (which, if you’re not a people person, may well be your dog with their ears flapping in the wind), good snacks, and, of course, a good playlist to sing your heart out to.

Because without adventure, life becomes mundane. We begin to resent the trivial tasks that are expected of us. And even the simplest of chores leave a bitter taste.

The onset of groundhog day brings security to those who want it, accepting what they have and asking for no more. But for the adventurers in life, it'll never be enough as they fight to break from the shackles and smell freedom in their morning cuppa.

Freedom from the norm. The day-to-day. The uninspiring. And replace it with roads to who knows where.

Because life isn’t all about making it to work on time. Or picking up a fresh loaf of bread on your way home, especially when you actually wanted bagels. And a coffee-to-go with all those fancy extras.

Make a plan, or, if you can, just go, on a wild adventure to find those extras. Visit all the places you saw in the movies, in books, or on the back of cereal boxes. Make a bucket list of places to tick off.

And take impulsive turn-offs, just to see where the road goes. Because ultimately, it’s the places that we’ve never seen that open our hearts the most.

Hello , everyone I found a sentence below: " We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us. " Are there grammar mistakes in the sentence? I think the correct one is " We don't travel for escaping from life, but for life not to escape from us. " Am I right?
