Music is definitely alive and kicking when you're on stage. It was a fantastic, wonderful, fitting celebration of iconic world-class music.

This was 'off the hook' amazing. Incredible treat for Stevie fans. Thank you so much

Seasoned, brilliant musicians with an awesome pedigree bringing a rare homage to Stevie's wonderful material. No lie, I enjoyed this show more that Stevie's show at Hyde Park. This is no plastic 'tribute' act. It's the real deal. It's fabulous.

Grand Funk Railroad Feed Off Crowd’s Energy At First Concert Back

Grand Funk Railroad made their long-awaited return to the road on July 2 at the Southern Ground Amphitheater in Fayetteville, Georgia.

Kicking off with a double shot of “Rock & Roll Soul” and “Footstompin’ Music” provided enough of a teaser to let the crowd know that there was plenty of both of those things on tap for the legendary group’s first show back.

In the days before the performance, drummer and vocalist Don Brewer, a founding member of the band, noted that it had taken a good amount of preparation to get back in the regular flow. “Being off this long, you kind of get out of that mindset of touring,” he chuckled, during an interview with UCR. “Before, it was kind of routine and now, it’s like, ‘Oh my God, what have I got to do?’”

They booked the amphitheater for a couple of extra days leading up to Friday’s return -- and even prior to rehearsal, Brewer felt good that they’d be in a solid place once they hit the stage. If anything, he knew what to look out for. “I’ve gone through some breaks before. You think you’re prepared until you actually get up there and you realize, ‘Oh my God, this takes a lot more energy and a lot more strength than I realized’,” he explains. “When you’re doing it night after night and week after week, it just becomes second hand. It will be interesting, but I do think that everybody will be prepared.”

“I don’t want to over-rehearse. Being off this length of time, we’re going to have to be very careful, especially with Max [Carl]’s vocals and my vocal,” he continued, adding with a husky laugh, “We’ll walk our way through. I’m hoping that it will be like riding a bike.”

Guitarist Bruce Kulick checked in with UCR for a separate interview after they had played the Georgia gig. He says it was very hard to pack and organize what was needed for the road -- which says a lot, considering just how many times the veteran musician has gone out on tour over the years.

Even dealing with the airport for the first time in 15 months brought some additional stress. “I didn’t know what to expect with the airlines, and it was my first flight as well since the pandemic,” he says.

“Since we had two days at the venue to rehearse, that was very helpful making it feel more like nothing happened,” he reports. “On show night the adrenaline kicked in, and although I was a bit more nervous than usual, I was excited to finally perform live in front of a sold out crowd.”

The fans infused the evening with extra energy, according to Kulick. “The people make you want to entertain, and the band was in a groove rather quickly on stage,” he says. “The big difference was all that time  not doing what we did so often for 20 years together. So it was us being “rusty” in a way, and now we’re getting the oil can out and taking a bath in it!”

And then there’s the music, of course -- Grand Funk come armed with a hefty stack of familiar hits that have chiseled their place in history. “I really love ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ since everyone knows it and you have to move your body when you hear it,” Kulick says.

The set swelled at the midpoint as Brewer and original bassist Mel Schacher jammed with Kulick during Brewer’s drum solo.

Kulick took the lead after that, performing his rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner,” which crossed over into the band’s version of “Inside Looking Out” by the Animals , as found on their 1969 Grand Funk album.

“There’s lots of guitar playing there,” he says, regarding the pairing of the two. And ‘ Closer to Home (I’m Your Captain) ’ is so epic. Ending the night with Don singing ' We’re an American Band ' brings down the house!”

Kulick rehearsed at home for nearly two weeks in advance of his return to the road. “I’d run through half a show one day and the second half of the show the next playing along with a live concert recorded in 2012,” he explains. “I told Don during that time, ‘Wow, we play some kick ass music, and it’s not an easy show, but I am just getting better and better at it with my at home practice.’ Don would jam to the show constantly, he couldn’t wait to get out there again!”

With million mile status on several major airlines, the pandemic break was the longest time at home for Kulick, who has been touring with very few breaks in the action since 1975, including the past 20 years of flying to gigs with Grand Funk Railroad.

He took advantage of his time at home. “I was super active with recording, being creative and very active on social media with my fans,” he says. “I did do two big virtual performances and did sessions for various artists including Chris Jericho .”

Kulick learned how to edit video on iMovie and worked on a number of projects, including a tribute to his brother Bob, who passed away in 2020 from heart disease. He also became proficient at recording guitar at home. “So much was discovered that I never had the time to do before, and I love everything about my new ways of becoming creative,” he shares. “In addition I was very active on Cameo -- and popular -- and gave guitar lessons and pro advice on MeetHook, all things which many fans love.”

He stayed hopeful throughout the pandemic that Grand Funk would eventually return to the road. “Don would keep in touch constantly, and the desire was always there,” Kulick says. “The vaccine made me know it would happen. When, I wasn’t sure, but thank God it’s here. We’re doing it!”

Bruce Kulick Announces His Departure From Grand Funk Railroad

'Some kind of wonderful': Grand Funk Railroad brings concert tour to Cape Cod Melody Tent

Like any good drummer, Don Brewer has kept the beat going for Grand Funk Railroad through thick and thin without losing his rhythm.

Drummer Brewer has been the backbone and the backbeat since the classic rock band formed in 1969. Brewer, 73, is the only continuous member of Grand Funk Railroad through numerous lineup changes over the decades.

He and the rest of the current lineup of Grand Funk Railroad will keep the groove going when their “Some Kind of Wonderful” tour stops Friday at the Cape Cod Melody Tent, giving local fans a chance to sing along to “American Band,” “Closer To Home (I'm Your Captain),” and other hits.

“Thank God that we’re here. We’re lucky to be back on stage,” Brewer says he told his bandmates before they played their first post-pandemic-shutdown show in July at the Southern Ground Amphitheater in Georgia.

“It was very difficult for me personally to be at home and be like ‘Oh God, is this it? Are we ever going to be able to get back out on the road?’” he says. He adds that he “kept the spirits up” and stayed in contact with all the other Grand Funk members throughout that unprecedented time.

Now everything is looking up, with sellout shows and even two nights as special guests on a bill with fellow Michigan musician Kid Rock as part of a “Michigan extravaganza.” Grand Funk has shows booked through February, including some rescheduled from last year.

“We’re going to do about a year’s worth of shows in six months,” Brewer says. It’s a welcome sign of being in demand, especially for a band that has now been on and off the road for over 50 years.

From the basement to the masses

Based out of Flint, Michigan, Grand Funk Railroad’s origin can be traced back to Brewer’s basement in Swartz Creek, Michigan, where he formed The Red Devils when he was a kid. After a few iterations, The Red Devils transformed into the power trio of Brewer, guitarist Mark Farner and bassist Mel Schacher: Grand Funk Railroad.

The band name is a take on the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, which ran through the area where Brewer and his bandmates grew up.

“In the mid-’60s, a term for music came along, ‘funk,’ and so we did a play on words,” Brewer explains. “It was a little risqué. People didn’t walk around saying ‘funk’ very often, so when you said Grand ‘Funk’ Railroad, everybody always thought you were saying the other four-letter word. So, it got a lot of attention.”

Holy smokes: Poll results show Cape Cod's top 5 BBQ restaurants

Grand Funk’s music has received a lot of attention too, racking up 13 gold and 10 platinum records, and amassing record sales over 25 million, starting with the debut album “On Time” in 1969.

Brewer points to Grand Funk’s performance at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1969 as the moment that jump-started the band’s success. The group landed its first record deal with Capitol Records and the little-known Michigan band was on track for national recognition.

The cards had not been in the musicians’ favor for that particular show: They had just taken up the name Grand Funk Railroad, so nobody knew who they were, and they were playing as the opening act. Plus, they weren’t even getting paid.

“We walked on and played in front of 80,000 people and they gave us a standing ovation and they just loved the band. That was really our turning point,” he says. “The word of mouth from that festival spread all through the south and we started getting gigs in the south and that’s what led us up the road.”

Musicals & Shakespeare: 5 ideas for Cape Cod theater shows to watch this week

Grand Funk would go on to record a string of 11 studio albums in the group’s first seven years, which Brewer says was more to do with the demands of record contracts back then rather than anything else.

“That would have been great (if it was like today),” he says, talking about artists who now have more control and are not as rushed. “We wouldn’t have left all those mistakes that we made on those records, but we didn’t have a choice. You’d get it as good as you could get it and leave it alone. Nowadays they fix everything and they redo it and they’ll do the song 100 times and put a compilation of it together. We didn’t have any of that.”

‘It gives me a chill and a thrill’

But what Brewer and company do have is a catalog of classic rock songs that have found eternal life on the radio. Brewer, a singing drummer similar to Don Henley and Phil Collins, wrote possibly Grand Funk’s most popular song, “We’re an American Band.” With it’s trademark drum fill and memorable chorus, “We’re an American Band” is a song that has been covered by everyone from Bon Jovi to Garth Brooks to Rob Zombie.

“I take it as a huge compliment,” Brewer says about the various covers. When asked what his favorite rendition is, he jokes, “Ours!”

Grand Funk isn’t a stranger to covering songs either, most notably “Some Kind of Wonderful,” originally written by R&B artist John Ellison in 1967.

You voted: These restaurants are the top five best places to get a burger on Cape Cod

Being attached to songs that have become staples on the radio and will likely be listened to for generations to come is meaningful to Brewer.

“It gives me a chill and it gives me a thrill,” he says. “Every night on stage when I get out there and start singing ‘Some Kind of Wonderful’ and the audience starts singing along louder than I’m singing, and I look at the faces and I see smiling faces of kids and grandkids and parents and grandparents, all singing along to the song, that’s awesome.”

The Beatles, a typhoon, armored tanks

The current Grand Funk lineup is the same one since 2000, with original bassist Mel Schacher, Max Carl of .38 Special singing, former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick, and keyboardist Tim Cashion. Both Brewer and Cashion have toured in Bob Seger’s Silver Bullet Band, the former dating back to the ‘80s up to as recently as 2015 in between Grand Funk stints.

Brewer says the Melody Tent show will be a “high-energy rock and roll show” and that he is looking forward to returning to the Cape after having not been here since the ‘90s. The focus of the concert will be on the band’s classic songs, and they’ve been known to occasionally throw in a newer song or two.

'Feels like the first time'?: Foreigner's 2021 concert tour includes Cape Cod Melody Tent stop

When asked if there is a particular moment that sticks out to him during Grand Funk’s long career, Brewer says there are several, noting the time in 1971 when they sold out Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles; when they played at a baseball stadium in Tokyo during the middle of a typhoon; and when the Army used the flood lights of armored tanks to light a show they were doing out in a field for U.S. troops in Germany.

Those memories add up because of the longevity the band has enjoyed. Not many bands, whether they’re the original lineup or not, can say they’ve been playing their songs live for audiences and touring the country for as long as Grand Funk. Over five decades -- from leaving his basement in Swartz Creek, Michigan to now -- Brewer credits the everlasting power of his band to one simple thing: authenticity.

“When I listen to Grand Funk music, I hear a certain amount of honesty about it. It’s not overthought, it’s not overly recorded, it’s not overly produced,” he says. “It’s guys doing what they do, having a good time, and putting out a record. That’s what I hear and what I think other people hear, too.”

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD Announce "Some Kind of Wonderful Tour"

Article contributed by sro | published on tuesday, january 14, 2020.

some kinda wonderful tour

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD--the legendary rock & roll powerhouse--is extremely excited to be touring in 2020 and marking a 51-year milestone. After playing to millions of fans on the band's tours from 1996 to 2019, Grand Funk's 2020 "Some Kind Of Wonderful Tour" will continue to reach both new and long-time fans.  Check the band's website for the preliminary dates for Grand Funk's 2020 "Some Kind Of Wonderful Tour" with more to be announced: grandfunkrailroad.com/tour.html

Named in honor of their 1975 Billboard pop smash, the 40-date "Some Kind Of Wonderful Tour" will start in Lincoln, Rhode Island on February 8. Originating from Flint, Michigan in 1969, this top-selling American rock group of the 70's is "Comin' To Your Town To Help You Party It Down." They've achieved 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide. Watch the tour trailer here  and read a Q&A with the band's Don Brewer below.

Known as "The American Band," the high-energy five-piece group GRAND FUNK RAILROAD includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the multi-million selling hit, "We're An American Band") and bassist Mel Schacher, "The God of Thunder." Joining Don and Mel are true "All Stars." Singer Max Carl is a rock veteran from 38 Special. Max penned and sang 38's biggest hit "Second Chance" and was co-founder of California's legendary Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. Don refers to Max as "the best blue-eyed soul singer on the planet." Lead guitarist Bruce Kulick is best known for his 12 years with KISS and has credits with Michael Bolton, Meatloaf and Billy Squier. (KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were influenced early on by Grand Funk.) Keyboardist Tim Cashion has a master's degree in music from the University of Miami. Affectionately called "Dr. Tim," his credits include stints with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band and English soul man Robert Palmer.

Grand Funk laid the groundwork for such bands as Foreigner, Journey, Van Halen and Bon Jovi with its signature hard driving sound, soulful vocals, muscular instrumentation and forceful pop melodies. The fact that Grand Funk's legacy still reigns over the Classic Rock landscape 50 years after is a testament to the group's influence and staying power. Mega-hits "We're An American Band," "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home," "Locomotion," and "Some Kind Of Wonderful" still receive continuous airplay on Classic Rock radio. "We're An American Band" has received notoriety in recent years being used in movie soundtracks and in television/radio advertising. The huge hit was featured in a General Motors national TV ad campaign and in Disney's animated feature film The Country Bears. "We're An American Band" was featured in the Cuba Gooding Jr. film Radio, and in the swash buckler Sahara starring Matthew McConaughey.

Internationally acclaimed Grand Funk has toured the world, selling out in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan and South America. A 1971 performance at New York's Shea Stadium sold out faster than the Beatles. The group's widespread appeal is also evident in its prestigious recording achievements. Over their career, Grand Funk has had 19 charted singles, 8 Top 40 hits and two Number One singles ("We're An American Band" and "Locomotion," both selling more than one million each). The group has now accumulated 13 gold and 10 platinum records with record sales exceeding 25 million copies sold worldwide. The most recent gold CD award was presented to the band for their greatest hits package Grand Funk Railroad the Collectors Series.

The multi-talented band carries on the tradition of Grand Funk hits and creates a new chapter in the legacy of Grand Funk Railroad. GFR drew 25,000 people to their Molson Canal Series Concert outside Buffalo, 20,000 in Albany, New York, and 20,000 fans to downtown Orlando, Florida. EMI/Capitol (Universal Music) released a new Grand Funk Greatest Hits package that includes a bonus DVD of rare concert footage. Grand Funk Railroad's 2019 "50 Years Of Funk Tour" was a huge success and now, with the group's 2020 "Some Kind Of Wonderful Tour," seasoned Grand Funk lovers and contemporary rock fans discovering the group for the first time will be able to celebrate 50 Years of Funk with Grand Funk Railroad.

Q&A with Don Brewer :

Have any rituals before hitting the stage?

We always do a "Team Huddle" right before taking the stage and I try to come up with something inspiring or funny to say to the guys.

Is there one item that you always bring on tour to remind you of home?

I always carry photos of my wife and daughters and grandkids.

What do you feel have been the band's main contributions to music?

Grand Funk has always been about "music with feel." Songs and performances are uplifting and we prefer to have people in the audience smiling and on their feet.

What has surprised you most in your career?

I started out putting together bands in the basement of my parents' home in Swartz Creek, Michigan and having my first band "The Red Devils" when I was 11 years old. My next band "The Jazzmasters" turned into "The Pack," "Terry Knight and The Pack," "The Fabulous Pack," and that band became "Grand Funk Railroad." I'm 71 years old and still playing in a band. SURPRISE!

Can you describe your best gig ever?

Shea Stadium in 1971.  Truly a Rock & Roll Fantasy.

And your worst one?

No such thing.

What career advice would you give now to your younger self?

Keep Going! You'll Make It!

Q&A with DON BREWER

What a great message you posted to fans on the band’s website: “After a long 15 months off due to Covid, the guys are excited to be back on stage playing across the USA. Kicking off in Fayetteville, GA July 2, with another 29 shows to follow this year.” Can you talk about your excitement of returning to the road? And when was the last time you had such a long break from the road?

BREWER : “I can’t wait to get back on stage and perform for people. This has been torture for me and the rest of the guys. We have been touring nonstop with this band since 2000 and the band and crew are family. Not seeing everyone on a regular basis has been very difficult. We have not had a break like this since 1982.”

When the reality of the pandemic initially set in and you knew you and the band couldn’t tour, what was going through your mind?

BREWER : “When it finally sunk in that the pandemic was going to be long term, my thought was: Is this it? Is this the end? Very depressing. So I stayed in touch with the guys by text and email and started rehearsing daily just to stay optimistic.”

During your time away from the road, did it give you the opportunity to spend some time doing things you perhaps hadn’t done in awhile?

BREWER : “While stuck at home during the pandemic I found things to do around the house that had been neglected for years. After nine months I ran out of projects.”

What did you miss most about touring? Well, maybe not the plane rides…

BREWER : “I miss two things touring. Being on stage in front of the fans playing our music and being with all the guys in the band and crew. We are brothers.”

Looking ahead to your first show on the 2021 “Some Kind of Wonderful Tour,” what thoughts do you think will be running through your head when you take stage and hear the crowd applause?

BREWER : “When we take the stage for the first time in over 15 months and hear the crowd and applause, I’m sure I will be thinking “Thank God!”
