How to Visit Metelkova Mesto; The Quirky Independent District and Street Art of Ljubljana, Slovenia

Who would’ve guessed that the autonomous cultural centre of Ljubljana; Metelkova Mesto, was nestled just a stone’s throw from the traditional Medieval town?

The ancient city of Ljubljana, with its photogenic streets, has a grittier facade. Here, the Ljubljana street art scene is flourishing. Metelkova City, the Republic of ROG as well as little pockets of fascinating street art in Ljubljana’s old town are showcasing an alternative and feistier side of the Slovenian capital.

The independent district of Metelkova feels like you’ve stepped into a bohemian playground. Street art dons every wall and building, strange, quirky and sometimes creepy sculptures hang off balconies and lurk in grassy areas.

In this article, I’ll tell you how you can experience and explore Metelkova, Ljubljana. It was unexpectedly one of the highlights of my Slovenia trip! Let’s go!

What is Metelkova Ljubljana?

The area of Metelkova Mesto is an autonomous area situated in the city of Ljubljana, Slovenia. It was established in the early 90s and is currently home to a diverse group of artists, activists, and other creatives.

The area is known for its distinctive street art and graffiti, which many consider to be some of the best in Europe. It goes by several names:

  • Metelkova Street
  • Metelkova Ulica
  • Metelkova City
  • Metelkova Mesto
  • AKC MetelkovaMesto

In addition to being a cultural hub for creativity and expression, Metelkova is also home to a variety of venues including bars, clubs, galleries, and music venues. These spaces provide the perfect backdrop for a wide range of events and activities throughout the year.

Furthermore, Metelkova is home to many independent cultural projects where people can express themselves and their views. This provides an outlet for those seeking alternative methods of communication in a context that supports and encourages creative freedom.

In short, Metelkova Mesto is a vibrant cultural hub that serves as a safe haven for ideas, creativity, and expression. It offers its community the opportunity to explore their own identity in an environment that fosters this.

The History of Metelkova Mesto

The full name of this area of Ljubljana is called the Metelkova City Autonomous Cultural Centre (or Avtonomni Kulturni Centre Metelkova Mesto in Slovenian or AKC for short).

The building of the barracks dates back to 1882 and was initially used by the Austro-Hungarian army.

Eventually, the building became the headquarters and prison of the Yugoslav National Army, which was up until 1991 when communism fell and Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia. After that, the buildings were in line for demolition.

In September 1993, squatters moved into the abandoned buildings. The barracks became a home and meeting place for youths and young artists who called themselves the “Network for Metelkova”. The area got its name after a nearby street called Metelko Street (Metelkova Ulica in Slovenian).

The Boom of Street Art in Ljubljana

Despite being granted permission to use the abandoned barracks to create an autonomous cultural centre, Metelkova’s future still wasn’t granted. Until more recently, it wasn’t recognised as a municipality of its own. The people living here even had to illegally siphon off water and power until more recent times.

With the prospect of the buildings being demolished, the network of about 200 artists protested and asked for permission to keep the abandoned barracks. Their goal was to turn them into an artistic commune.

Although permission was granted, the future of Metelkova was never 100% certain with the likelihood of selling the land for commercial use.

The Future of Metelkova, Slovenia

The people of Metelkova Mesto are passionately against the gentrification of the area, and you can see why. Surrounding the area are ultra-modern developments, which compared to Metelkova, have no soul about them.

Today the seven buildings are run as an autonomous cultural centre.

Metelkova it’s a little city within a city with its own rules. It’s become a centre for liberal thought and speech which appeals to creatives who enjoy the freedom to express their art (in sculpture, painting, spoken word etc.).

In 2005 Metelkova Mesto was officially recognised as part of the national cultural heritage, which thankfully has secured its future. And I’m glad. It really is a remarkable and thought-provoking little part of Ljubljana, it would have been detrimental to the city if it had been demolished.

Visiting Metelkova Mesto – Know Before You Go

Metekova Meso district is divided between bars, clubs, studios for dance and music, art galleries and design studios. There are frequent pop-up flea markets and exhibitions here too as well as boasting Ljubljana’s most vibrant club scene after hours.

The area has its own unique identity and it’s an incredibly vibrant palace to visit.

It’s important to note that despite the abundance of stuff to see here, it’s still a residential area. When you visit, be respectful towards the residents.

Where Is the Ljubljana Art District?

The Ljubljana Art District is located in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana. It is to the northeast of the old city centre, close to the train station.

Getting to Metelkova Ljubljana

You can easily reach Metelkova from Ljubljana city centre on foot. It’s just a short walk to the northeast, towards the main train and bus stations. You’ll know you’ve found the area because the streets surrounding this district are filled with stress art.

Is the Metelkova District Safe?

The area is generally safe. However, just be aware of your surroundings. If you visit in the evening, the streets can get quite busy so be mindful of pickpockets. During the day Metelkova is a great spot to explore, especially for those interested in the alternative culture and youth movement that have taken root here.

What’s It Like Inside Metelkova?

There is something truly unique about the atmosphere inside Metelkova. It’s a place where creativity and art come together with all sorts of different people, making it one of the most vibrant spots in the entire city.

Inside the walls, you can find a variety of different clubs, galleries, and art studios where you can experience all sorts of music and performances. There’s also plenty of street art, sculptures and graffiti to explore as well.

Best Tour of Metelkova Mesto, Ljubljana

If you’re looking for alternative places to visit in Ljubljana, then Metelkova Mesto is just that. I started my visit as part of a guided tour as I wanted to find out more about the area. It was fascinating to hear how it came about, meet some of the people who live there as well as learn about its importance to the Ljubljana street art scene.

Although you can visit Metelkova by yourself if you want a guide to explain more about the area and its history, check out this tour of Metelkova .

This tour is a fun and eye-opening tour of Ljubljana’s alternative scene! You’ll check out the amazing graffiti, street art, and indie culture at Metelkova, Rog Factory, and more. You’ll also learn how locals rebelled against oppression and expressed their creativity and values through art.

Where to Stay In Metelkova City, Ljubljana

Hostel Celica Art is THE ONLY place you’d want to stay in Metelkova Mesto. It’s also the only place I’m recommending. It’s located inside part of the old prison! So you’re right in the heart of the district. Literally, spend a night behind bars!

The prison has been beautifully renovated, so it’s light, airy and with tons of artwork about the place, however, it’s still kept some of the original features, like the prison doors! Even if you don’t stay here, just take a peek at it. Highly recommended.

Things to See in Metelkova Mesto

When you visit Metelkova, be mindful that is a neighbourhood where people live.

This is a street artist’s playground. Every surface in this district has somehow been created into vibrant pieces of artwork.

This ranges from brightly coloured graffiti, political messages talking about freedom to giant murals and sculptures of alien-like installations and everything in-between.

Sight for the Senses

You’ll notice how many repurposed and salvaged items have been used. Mannequins are a common occurrence as are bike wheels, gears, tiles, ceramics and wooden panelling all in a myriad of bold colours and psychedelic patterning.

Metelkova is an absolute tease for the senses, there is so much to look at and then when you look again, there’s even more. You’ll also see the residents of the area, often outside in the central courtyards, on the balconies or sometimes working on artwork, other times just socialising.

Walking around Metelkova, you almost forget that this was once the headquarters of the Yugoslav army along with barracks and a prison.

I’ve visited abandoned Soviet buildings before, and frequently they have an eerie feel to them. The feel of this area is the polar opposite and a total middle finger up to everything that this place once stood for.

During day time, the area is fairly subdued. However, after dark it attracts a mixed crowd, from different races and backgrounds, ranging from students to tourists to professionals all looking for a fun night out at some of the most diverse underground music scenes in Ljubljana.

The Metelkova Art Center

This is a unique cultural hub, providing a non-commercial space for alternative art and music.

Artists from all over the world gather here to showcase their work in an open and welcoming environment. The Center also hosts workshops, talks and other activities, making it a great place to meet new people and learn about the local scene.

The Republic of Rog – The Old Bike Factory

A short distance from Metelkova Mesto is the Republic of Rog. Similarly, to Metelkova, the Rog factory was set for demolition.

This former factory is where Rog bicycles were made. Production of the bikes here started in 1953 until 1991 when the factory was closed. Again just like with Metelkova, with an uncertain future, a group of artists and activists took charge of the abandoned building, creating the Republic of Rog or the Autonomous Factory Rog.

This became another venue in the city of Ljubljana for liberal thinking and art as well as a venue for events.

The future of The Republic of Rog is still uncertain, the giant gun painted on the side of the wall and facing towards the city is a testament to this. In June 2016 construction crews entered the Rog building and tried to demolish the old factory. You can guess who won, the building is still here!

Alike to Metelkova Mesto, it’s now a thriving area for artistic and free-thinkers with space inside the old factory put aside for galleries and artists’ studios.

You’ll also find skate parks, social areas and space for concerts and nightclubs here. The building hasn’t forgotten its roots either, look out for the on-site bike repair shop.

Wandering around the grounds, you’ll probably meet some of the residents working on their artwork or sitting about chatting. Like with Metelkova, it’s visually stimulating, not a single surface has been left without some type of artwork or sculpture on it.

Other Street Art in Ljubljana

Away from Metelkova and the old Rog Factory, Ljubljana has a thriving street art scene.

Thankfully the aesthetic of the old cobbled city centre hasn’t been affected. There are a few tasteful pieces dotted about, but the artists have kept their work away from the historic centre. However, if you head to some of the side streets or narrow alleyways, you’ll find tons of it.

Sometimes it’s a large mural and other times a discrete character. You’ll often see similar themes of a character, in particular, there are loads of pieces based on cats and foxes.

On 2-6th July 2019, Ljubljana hosted its first International Street Art Festival , which brought together international and local artists, activists and academics.

The event was called ‘Alternative Ljubljana’ and its goal was to get visitors to the city to ‘read the streets’ and participate in discussions, exhibitions and workshops based around street art whilst encouraging a new generation of street artists to keep street art alive in the capital.

FORM(AT) | KEYNOTE LECTURE | Peter Bengtsen

Unsanctioned expressions like graffiti and street art are ephemeral. This does not mean that they are necessarily short-lived, but rather that they are generally not intended to last and may be altered or removed at any time. However, aspects of such works often live on through different types of documentation. This talk will discuss how we might think about the methods for, as well as the very practice of, documenting – and perhaps preserving – graffiti and street art. necessarily short-lived, but rather that they are generally not intended to last and may be altered or removed at any time. We’ll talk with the iconic photojournalist of the social and cultural margins of American megalopolises, whose splendor and misery, pain and inspiration she has been tirelessly recording, camera in hand, since the 1970s, within the framework of two of her most famous works. First, her pioneering chronicling of the early New York graffiti scene in the first photobook on the topic, titled Subway Art (1984). The second work is the recent documentary film, simply titled Martha: A Picture Story (2019), in which she and her contemporaries speak about her invaluable contribution to understanding the culture of the streets – especially the side streets, the dirty and graffitied alleys.

FORM(AT) | PANEL 5 | Pandemic Public Space

During the COVID-19 pandemic, any “rules” for creating, viewing, documenting, and sharing street art and public art went out the window. Constrained to our homes, the internet became more of a public space than ever before. The first piece that Banksy created during lockdown looks to be in his studio’s bathroom. With advertisers abandoning their billboards, New York City’s near-empty Times Square was covered in artists’ messages to essential workers. Ground murals claimed enormous swaths of physical space for Black Lives Matter activists, before primarily being documented by drones and shared online. Public artists turned to making posters to be shared at protests, but also on Instagram. In many cities, the streets were suddenly overwhelmed with fresh graffiti, but the empty streets meant fewer eyeballs. The greatest acts of street art in the last 12 months have almost certainly been fleeting moments of destruction, captured by frontline photographers and videographers. The relationship between physical public space, the internet, documentation, and the art itself is now blurrier than ever. This discussion will cover the blurring of those lines, with a combination of firsthand perspective and highlighting the clever ways other artists and activists responded to an audience suddenly locked down but online.

Ivy is a collection of morbid musical stories. The acoustic songs also touch on mankind’s political polarization, where a fellow human being is viewed through a black-and-white filter, blind to other colours, shades, nuances. OUTRO: 'LEFT OVER' GRAFFITI JAM

The Hall of Fame is ordinarily reserved only for the most artistically and technically sophisticated graffiti art. At the same time, it is a historic place, as it is the first legal wall in Ljubljana, which offered graffiti writers a chance to establish themselves. This time, the rules of the subculture will be bent a bit – the Hall of Fame will be occupied by the new generation of aspiring writers, who rarely have the chance to create on these walls. This time the rules of subculture will be bent a bit - the Hall of Fame will be occupied by the new generation of aspiring writers who rarely have the chance to create on these walls. The Left Over Graffiti Jam will give a chance to empty the leftover spray cans and hand the walls over to new generations to add to the layers of paint and subculture.

Are you looking for interesting things to do in Slovenia but you don’t like crowds? Great! If you are into outdoor activities such as tours and trips, these are one of the best there are! Based both on in-depth research and on street credibility, the Ptich project is a community-conscious undertaking which brings entertainment, humor,  culture and music to classic Slovenia sightseeing. Rather than common tourist tours, we perform unique educational outdoor public lectures and social events that you’ll remember for a very long time.

Our small-group trips and tours give you a fantastic overview of Slovenia’s natural wonders, architectural landmarks and historic sites, while enhancing your experience with hidden cultural gems, music heritage,  contemporary music creations, grass-roots initiatives, street art and murals, urban gardening, culinary delights, artistic atmosphere, socialist music, sports history and, last but not least, the women’s perspective on all things Slovenian.

Coming from the authentic local cultural scene, our guides combine history and art knowledge, on the one hand, and contemporary sociology and cultural studies, on the other hand, in order to give you the most amazing stories and interpretations both of the ancient and of the contemporary Slovenia.

The Punk Music tour of Ljubljana was as much a lesson in history as a journey of music discovery. Through a few key sites - all easily walkable to - Gregor painted a picture of what life would have been like for a music lover in 1980s Ljubljana! Before the tour, I was sent links to some of the scene's seminal punk albums and compilations - from what was then Yugoslavia as well as from Slovenia. I left the tour with some knowledge of Slovenian music, a greater understanding of the history of ex-Yugoslavia, some new bands to listen to and suggestions to expand my knowledge! Thanks so much, Gregor! Read more Written January 3, 2024

All these locations are reflection of historical, cultural and societal development and change. But we are not aware of it at all. • lammertjans2023 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A personalized walk through Ljubljana After a mutual introduction, Gregor, our guide, lead us through Ljubljana, whilst telling about the city's punk rock history. He played us songs, showed us videos of live performances by bands from back in the day and artwork from the era along the way. I was a bit worried that the narrative would be along the lines of 'back then things were exciting, but those days are long gone', but this was far from the case. The perspective is punk as a cultural phenomenon in communist Yugoslavia. We got a niche history tour that Gregor tried to make as tailor made as possible. He is a kind guy who experienced Yugo punk first hand as a teenager growing up in Ljubljana and is still in conctact with some of the scene's founding figures. He can explain what Yugoslavian communism meant for young people wanting to create something of their own in the late 70s and 80s and how the communist authorities allowed a punk scene to develop, because he witnessed it from up close, the regime as well as the scene. Gregor is passionate about art and culture, which is clear from his vast knowledge. He also knows Ljubljana well and was able to give us recommendations for places to visit. I feel like we've only covered a small percentage of the things Gregor could have told us, because Ljubljana's cultural history is rich and there was only so much time. Whoever has an interest in underground/alternative culture will learn a lot from spending time with this guy. Read more Written September 22, 2023

Ljubljana feels like a street artist’s playground. Wandering around the streets of Slovenia’s capital city, it’s hard to find a building that hasn’t been painted, drawn or written on in some way. There is so much street art in Ljubljana, in fact, that it’s almost distracting. Which I LOVE, by the way.

NB : Where possible, we’ve tried to credit the artists responsible for each piece, though research along these lines is often sketchy. If there is a piece that is unnamed, it is because we do not know who created it. If you do, or you see that a piece has been credited to the wrong artist, please let us know in the comments below and we will correct it.

Literary Street Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Part of the reason for the sheer volume of graffiti and murals probably comes from the fact that many of the buildings here have large, bright surfaces that must be so inviting to graffiti artists and street art creatives.

Street Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Another more likely possibility is that so much visual expression comes from the fact that Ljubljana is home to not one, but two separate autonomous artistic communities: Metelkova and The Republic of Rog (more on these down below).

Graffiti in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Whatever the reason, Ljubljana is a visual feast for the eyes, with cartoons, tags, comedic and political messages and brightly coloured murals, all intermingled with hundreds of years of the city’s history and culture. No matter how you feel about street art, taking time to appreciate it is a vital part of any Ljubljana itinerary or road trip through Slovenia .

ANMLS 2014 Street Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Here are some examples of the many and varied pieces you can see throughout the city, and a breakdown of the three best areas for viewing street art in Ljubljana.

Street Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Autonomous Metelkova

Eugen Street Art outside Metelkova in Ljubljana, Slovenia

If you’re looking for street art in Ljubljana, your first port of call should be here. The Metelkova City Autonomous Cultural Centre (in Slovenian: “ Avtonomni kulturni centre Metelkova mesto ” or AKC for short) lies just down the road from the main bus station of Ljubljana.

Street Art of Tesla and Einstein in Metelkova in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Metelkova began its life as an Austro-Hungarian army barracks in 1882 which, after being finished in 1911, eventually became the headquarters of the Yugoslav National Army.

Street Art in Metelkova in Ljubljana, Slovenia

When Yugoslavia dissolved in 1991, a large number of artistic and youth groups formed the “Network for Metelkova” (named after the nearby Metelkova Street) and asked the municipality of Ljubljana for permission to turn the site into an artistic commune.

Street Art in Metelkova in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Thus began the creative and slightly unstable life of Autonomous Metelkova. Much like Christiania in Copenhagen or Užupis in Vilnius, Metelkova strives to be its own municipality but is not entirely legal.

Having been granted permission to use the former barracks, the decision was then reversed a couple of years later when demolition of some of the barracks was approved in order to convert the site for commercial sale. The site became a squat, and has existed precariously ever since.

Raze Street Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia

However, in its lifetime it has become an artistic haven, with all manner of murals, sculptures, structures and decorations. They also have regular live events! And in 2005 the area was officially recognised as a national cultural heritage. So it isn’t going anywhere for now.

The Republic of Rog

Republic of Rog Symbol Street Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia

The Republic of Rog, also known as the Autonomous Factory Rog, has a similar situation and story to Metelkova. Instead of a military barracks, Rog was formerly a factory that made Rog bicycles from 1953 until it was abandoned in 1991.

Street Art inside the Republic of Rog in Ljubljana, Slovenia

For 15 years the Rog factory was empty. Then, in 2002, the municipality of Ljubljana (remember them?) bought the entire complex and began discussions on what to do with the place.

Street Art inside the Republic of Rog in Ljubljana, Slovenia

After four years of much discussion but relative inaction, a group of artists, students and activists organised an occupation of Rog and started to hold events there.

Street Art outside the Republic of Rog in Ljubljana, Slovenia

Unfortunately for the Republic of Rog, it has not been as accepted as Metelkova. In June of 2016, the tension between the occupants of Rog and the municipality reached a height when construction crews entered the complex to begin demolition.

Azram Street Art outside the Republic of Rog in Ljubljana, Slovenia

After just over a week, the demolition was halted until legal proceedings concerning the rights of the cultural centre could be concluded. As of the writing of this article, the conflict is still unresolved, leaving the ultimate fate of the Autonomous Factory Rog uncertain.

Azram Mural outside the Republic of Rog in Ljubljana, Slovenia

In spite of its precarious future, since its occupation Rog has been transformed into a veritable cornucopia of creative expression. The former factory buildings now contain all manner of repurposed areas, including multiple gallery spaces, two skate parks, the main social centre, various concert and clubbing venues, artist studios and, appropriately, a bicycle repair shop.

There’s a LOT of street art here, both inside the grounds and on the long wall running outside on the street. There’s even a piece here by the internationally renowned Blu, who we fell in love with in Krakow !

Street Art on the Streets of Ljubljana

Okay, okay, I know this isn’t much of a specific area. But the sheer amount of artwork on show means you really just can’t miss!

Street Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia

We explored all around the most central area, from Bleiweisova Street across to the Dragon Bridge, the old town and beyond. On virtually every corner, there was something interesting to see.

Azram 1107 Street Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia

In July of 2019, Ljubljana held its first International Street Art Festival. The five day event was designed to encourage visitors “to read the streets and actively participate, while supporting young, yet-to-be-established generations of street artists and caring for the bright future of the local street art environment.” Which is VERY encouraging for the future of street art here!

I can’t wait to see what we’ll find when we return!

If you want to get a fully comprehensive breakdown of many of the street art pieces shown here, then there is a tour available: https://alternativetoursljubljana.com/ljubljana-graffiti-tour/ Unfortunately the tour doesn’t run in winter so we were unable to take it when we visited, but we’ll be taking it next time we’re in Ljubljana!

INVADER’S STREET ART TOUR

With the Invader’s Street Art Tour you will join us in a real life video game, exploring Ljubljana’s pixelated urban art and other forms of street art.

We will visit the city’s largest gallery – the streets of Ljubljana, where we will get acquainted with the details of local street production. In the process, we will get to know the world-famous street artist Invader .

Through his project, the unknown but globally famous street artist Invader has freed these 8-bit retro characters from the world of 2D video games to spread them in 3D form all over the world and beyond – even in the stratosphere! With the first wave, 20 ceramic pieces and a score of 340 points, the street artist successfully left his mark on Ljubljana years ago, but how much do you know about these infamous mosaics? Have you ever “flashed” them? In 2021 Invader visited the city again, this time in the form of an exhibition at the International Center of Graphic Arts and through a new wave of brand new mosaics.

Find out more about Invader, his work, rubikcubism and more broadly about street art on the one-and-only Invader’s Street Art Tour.
