Hand baggage allowance and what you can take with you
This page tells you about your hand baggage allowance you what can take into the cabin with you, as well as all the items you can and can't take onboard.
Hand baggage is included as part of all our tickets. The size of your bag needs to be a maximum of 23 x 36 x 56cm (that's around 9 x 14 x 22 inches).
Important: You must be able to place your hand baggage in the overhead bins unaided. For passengers who require special assistance please make sure you tell us at the point of your medical clearance if you require assistance with storing your hand luggage.
- Economy and Premium
- Upper Class
- Children's baggage allowance
If you’re flying in our Economy (Light, Classic & Delight) or Premium cabins, you can take one piece of hand baggage weighing up to 10kg (or 22lb).
Please note: if your hand baggage exceeds the weight and/or size limits, you’ll need to remove some items and add to your hold baggage, or it must be carried as checked baggage and you must pay any applicable charges.
If you’re flying in Upper Class you can take up to two pieces of hand baggage, weighing up to 12kg (26lb) for one bag, or up to 16kg (35lb) combined weight. So for example, you could take a 12kg bag and another little bag of 4kg.
Please note: if your hand baggage exceeds the weight and/or size limits, you’ll need to remove some items and add to your hold baggage, or it must be carried as checked baggage and you must pay any applicable charges.
Babies and toddlers aged 0-23 months are entitled to one bag each weighing up to 6kg (or 13lb).
Any children aged 2+ years are entitled to the same amount of hand baggage as an adult in the cabin allowances shown above.
When travelling with infants or children you can bring a fully collapsible pushchair (which we can take from you at the gate and pop in the hold) and car seat, in addition to the free check in allowance.
If you are travelling to London Heathrow, please be advised that pushchairs (with the exception of special assistance pushchairs) won’t be delivered to the aircraft door when you arrive and will be available to collect from baggage reclaim.
Alternatively, pushchairs that are a maximum of 23 x 36 x 56cm (that’s around 9 x 14 x 22 inches) when folded are permitted in the cabin with you as your hand baggage. Please note pushchairs carried onboard are part of your hand baggage allowance, not an additional item. If your buggy does not fit in the baggage sizer at check in or at the boarding gate, the pushchair will be tagged by ground staff and checked in either at check in or the boarding gate. You must be able to place your foldable pushchair in the overhead bins unaided.
Additional items you can take with you
To help with baggage conundrums, we’ve compiled the following list to clarify the bits and bobs you can take onboard in addition to the allowances above:
- Your handbag, small backpack/rucksack, pocketbook or purse, as you would normally use it (in other words, not just being used to contain items that would otherwise be regarded as baggage). This must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you.
- Your overcoat or wrap.
- Your umbrella or walking stick (these cannot be pointed or sharp).
- A small camera and/or pair of binoculars.
- A reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight.
- An infant’s food (for consumption on the flight).
- A small amount of duty-free goods.
- Headphones for onboard use (they’ll need the standard 3.5mm jack).
You can bring laptops onboard, if you can fit them into your hand baggage.
If you're planning to bring any large electrical items with you (such as laptops), please remember that you’ll need to remove them from your bag for security screening. You’ll be asked to place them in a tray so they can be clearly scanned.
Mobility aids and wheelchairs
Mobility aids such as walking aids and manual collapsible wheelchairs can also be taken onboard some of our flights. Make sure you have a look at our Special Assistance page for all the information on this.
Cigarettes, cigars and lighters
You can carry the following items onboard, but you can’t smoke them:
- Electronic cigarettes
- Rolling tobacco
- Cigarette lighters including butane, absorbed fuel (Zippo style) and battery-powered lighters can be carried on the person, except on flights to Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Tobago, Havana and Delhi.
- Cigarette papers
Liquids and powders in your hand luggage
For security reasons, there are limits to the amount of liquids you can bring with you in your hand baggage, on all our flights.
The term 'liquids' includes gels, lotions, pastes, liquid cosmetics, foams, and foodstuffs. And of course, drinking water.
Generally, all liquids must be in bottles or containers of 100ml or smaller. All your liquids must fit inside a single resealable clear bag no bigger than 20cm x 20cm (8ins x 8ins).
Unless you need them during the flight, we recommend you pack your liquid items in your hold baggage to avoid security delays.
If you are carrying baby foods or medications , you will be able to bring more of these liquids with you, see below.
There are also restrictions on liquids bought in Duty Free at the aircraft. Please check these carefully, especially if you have an onward connection, as your Duty-Free items could be confiscated if you don't comply.
Any liquids you carry in your hand baggage must meet the following requirements to pass security screening:
- Liquids must be in individual containers of 100ml / 3 oz or smaller.
- All liquid containers must be placed in a single transparent, re-sealable bag (i.e. with a zip or pressable seal). The bag must be no bigger than 20cm x 20cm (8ins x 8ins / one quart), and a maximum of one litre in capacity.
- Only one transparent re-sealable bag is allowed. Bags not fulfilling the requirements above are not allowed.
Exceptions for baby food and medications
The following liquids are allowed in amounts greater than 100ml. Please bear in mind that you still shouldn’t bring excessive amounts:
Baby food and formula milk, when the infant for whom the food or milk is intended for is present.
Liquid expressed breast milk can be carried even when the infant is not present, provided that the milk is in containers not exceeding 2000ml (2 litres). The milk must not be frozen, and there is no limit on the number of containers that can be carried. When the infant is not present, gel/ice packs can also be carried in order to keep the milk cool.
Prescription and over-the-counter medications, whether in liquid, gel, or aerosol form, including eye drops and saline solution for medical purposes. Read more on our Special Assistance page
Liquids or gels for passengers with disabilities, diabetes, or an appropriate medical condition.
Items used to augment the body for medical or cosmetic reasons, such as prosthetic breasts and bras containing gels.
Since 30th June 2018, there's a limit to the amount of powder you can take in your hand baggage on flights to the USA. This includes things like protein powders, talc, laundry powder and Bisto.
For security reasons, if you want to take any powder products larger than 350ml (12oz, 340g), they'll need to go in your checked baggage - you can't take them onboard with you.
If you buy any duty-free powder products at the airport over the 350ml (12oz, 340g) limit, make sure they put them in a tamper proof sealed bag for you (you'll be fine with your favourite face powder from Mac, as they're only about 10g).
There are some exceptions:
- Travelling with your baby - you can bring along their baby formula
- Travelling with human remains - with the relevant death certificate
- Powered medication over 350ml (12oz, 340g) - with a letter from your medical practitioner
For more information about what items you can or can't bring in your hand baggage, please visit our Dangerous Items page .
Items not allowed onboard in your hand luggage
- Smart bags (unless the batteries can be removed)
- Torch-style cigarette lighters
- Non-safety matches
- Toy or replica guns (plastic or metal)
- Sharp items – this includes household items such as household cutlery, knives (of any length), paper knives, razor blades or darts
- Hypodermic syringes – unless you have a medical condition that requires you to inject on the flight. Find more information below.
- Scissors (scissors with blunt/round-ended blades, metal or plastic, less than 6cm in length or scissors with metal blades and pointed tips under 3cms are permitted)
- Sporting bats
- Billiard, snooker or pool cues
- Tradesmen’s tools (however, US airports will allow screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and other tools, but not crowbars, drills, hammers or saws, as long as they are seven inches or less in length)
- Any dangerous articles such as flammables, corrosives, poisons, radioactive materials, ammunition, firearms or explosives.
For the full list of items that are not allowed onboard the flight, head over to our Dangerous articles page .
Hypodermic needles
We realise it’s essential for some of our passengers to carry hypodermic needles and other medical equipment in order to treat a medical condition. If you have a medical reason that requires you to inject during the course of a flight, naturally you can carry your syringes in your hand baggage.
However, please ensure you’re able to provide adequate medical evidence in the form of a doctor’s letter and prescription. You’ll be asked to show this when you check in and at security screening, and you should keep it with you at all times. We also ask that you bring your own sharps box so you can dispose of your needles safely and hygienically.
For more information, please refer to our Special Assistance page .
Additional security
- Do not pack wrapped gifts as our security agents may have to unwrap them for the purpose of searches.
- Remember that no sharp objects are permitted in your hand baggage, so pack them in your hold luggage before checking in. All sharp items in hand baggage will be removed and confiscated at security search and anyone trying to take an illegal item through security could be prosecuted.
- Open drinks are not allowed through security controls.
- Do not carry packages at the request of people not known to you.
- Do not leave your baggage unattended at any time.
- Take all reasonable steps to prevent anyone from placing anything in your baggage without your knowledge.
The security measures in place are there to protect you, and we ask for your co-operation and patience. Please proceed to the security control and then the departure gate in a timely manner as we will not delay an aircraft departure due to late arriving passengers.
Garment bags, wedding dresses and suits
Garment bags
A garment bag can only be used as your hand baggage in Economy or Premium if it fits the dimensions of the hand baggage allowance. If you’d like to bring one but it exceeds 23 x 36 x 56 cm, it will need to be as additional checked in baggage.
In Upper Class , your hand baggage can also include one garment bag, 20cm (8 inches) thick - again, this shouldn't exceed 12kg. This will count towards your two bag limit.
Wedding dresses and wedding suits
You’re welcome to take your wedding dress or wedding suit onboard in addition to your hand luggage. Our crew will, where space permits, hang your dress or suit for you but on some flights the wardrobe space is very limited so we can't guarantee this. Please pack your dress in a box or bag so that when the crew can’t find space to hang it, it can be safely stowed. With any wedding suits, please make sure they're packed in a soft suit carrier.
If you prefer not to carry it and would like to check it in, please pack your dress or suit into a separate suitcase and mark the suitcase as ‘fragile wedding garments’. Where possible the items should be packed into a plastic bag for extra protection. Please note that if the separate suitcase is outside of your baggage allowance you will need to purchase additional baggage.
For customers travelling from London Heathrow, we want to ensure that your special day goes without a hitch, so we suggest that wedding dresses\suits are carried as hand luggage using the packing advice above.

Has anyone had experience with this? Encountered any problems or had issues?
I'm aware that Virgin let customers travel with a wedding dress as well as normal hand luggage allowance at no extra cost. We are getting married in Barbados and plan to take my dress along with our hand luggage and just want to preempt any potential issues, if any.
Have it packed professionally in a box that complies with carry on sizes. This way you will be sure you'll have no problems, take responsibility yourself. There is not a lot of room on full planes.
I have a friend who flies these routes and crew get fed up with brides wanting special treatment for dresses. There's little space and often crew have to stuff dresses into small spaces. Crew have more important things to do in preparing for take off and other passengers to take care of.
Make sure you have confirmation you can take it as extra. I personally would take it as my only piece of hand baggage and then there won't be any questions about taking it on board. Do remember there may be other brides as well, if there's no extra room there's no extra room.
good luck with your wedding.
Last time we flew UC to Mexico, ex LGW ( Boeing 747) we saw cabin crew putting a large " dress bag" into the UC wardrobe, but that was probably not the norm...
Many congratulations on your forthcoming wedding....
Mondial, it all very we'll saying they might have room in the UC wardrobe, what happens if there's no room or there's 6 other brides? The OPs dress found end up in the hold or stuffed in a space. That's why it's best to take responsibility and have if packed in a cabin baggage compliant box or case.
Its best to be prepared for the worst case and then there's no disappointment.
Then in that ( very small) case, the OP can plan ahead to scrunch up the most important dress she will probably ever wear, for her big day, and have it crammed into one of the overhead bins, in a carry-on compliant box, can't she.......
I was trying to be helpful, having flown VS in all classes of cabin for the last 24 years, but I will leave it to others to advise the OP further, and I wish her well.
It's weird, I got married in Saint Lucia, packed my dress in my hold luggage , did of course get a bit of anxiety but not much, and all was fine. I can't say I saw if as fhe most important dress I'd ever wear, and if had been lost I would have been upset but got married in whatever, I'm obviously very unromantic.
I know my best friend was having kittens about all their wedding gear when her daughter was getting married in Mijas. There were around 10 extra hold bags for the wedding party as full highland regalia for the men is far from lightweight or easily compacted. It took up more space that the bride and bridesmaid's dresses. They ended up flying out a week early to have a buffer in case any of the cases went astray. Taking it onboard would never have been an option. Fortunately it all arrived without a hitch.
I agree with Smudge. A lot of shops that sell wedding dresses will also sell hand luggage compliant boxes, and they pack them for you. Virgin do say if there is room they will hang them, but it's no good relying on there being, or it could end up being laid across other peoples hand luggage in the overheads. They advise that you pack your dress in a box or a bag.

Wondering how to travel with a wedding dress? Yikes! Traveling with your wedding dress can be an overwhelming task, one that is often not even properly thought about till the last minute.
We recently traveled with a wedding dress to get married in Colorado and then for a bigger ceremony in Africa so we know a thing or two about traveling with a dress. Actually, we didn’t stop there, we took photos with our dress around the globe.
Why travel with your wedding dress, you ask? Well, if you’re planning a destination wedding in a picturesque location, it’s only fitting that you take your beautiful dress along with you.
A near 25% of weddings in the US (350,000) every year are destination weddings.
However, the challenges of traveling with a wedding dress can often be overwhelming for any bride. That’s why it’s important to prepare well in advance. Take the time to research airline restrictions, select the right garment bag, and request any additional allowances from your airline.

How to Travel With A Wedding Dress: 5 Tips when Flying with a Wedding Dress
1. Choose the Right Garment Bag For taking a Wedding Dress on the Plane
So, you’ve found the perfect dress for your destination wedding . Congratulations! But now comes the tricky part: getting it to your venue in one piece. The key to a successful journey with your dress is finding the right garment bag.
Selecting the right garment bag for your dress is crucial. It must be sturdy enough to protect the fabric while being carried around, in transit and also being checked-in. Always look for bags that have padded interiors to avoid any damage to the dress while traveling.
Tips to choose the right garment bag include scouting for bags that offer ample space for the dress, along with additional compartments to store accessories like your veil or jewelry.
Ensure the zipper of the garment bag is sturdy and high quality. Don’t be tempted to skimp on buying a cheaper bag, as it could wind up costing you much more in repairs or replacement.
Where to buy Wedding dress Garment Bags?
When it comes to garment bag options, the market has a lot to offer. You can find a range of garment bags here .
You can choose between convertible garment bags that double as duffels, bags with built-in humidifiers, or even carry-on garment bag options for a quick pre-wedding touch-up. However, be mindful of the pros and cons of the different garment bags options before making your final decision.
Remember, traveling with a wedding dress doesn’t have to be an anxiety-inducing experience. Choose the right garment bag, and you’ll be one step closer to making this journey hassle-free!
Need a tip? This is a great quality garment bag we would recommend. Here are some others to consider:
Check out this wedding gown garment bag on Amazon . It features durable zippers that operate smoothly and two sturdy handles on the back. It can be easily folded and hung on a hanger, making it ideal for both transportation and closet storage while traveling.

The smooth zipper ensures easy closure and the transparent PVC pouch allows for easy labeling and identification of your dresses without the need to open the bag.
We got our wedding dress to Iceland in one piece
2. Check airline weight limits
One important thing to do is to check airline weight limits to make sure you have enough weight to bring your dress (as well as all other luggage you have!!) with you.
You also need to make the decision about whether you are going to check your wedding dress underneath or bring it on the plane in carry on luggage. We chose to bring it on in our carry on luggage as we have had checked in luggage go missing before.
Wedding dresses plus all your accessories and a suit for your man will likely weigh 22 lb (10 kg) if you have a large dress.
Traveling with a wedding dress can be stressful, especially when it comes to fitting it into the limited overhead storage space on board.
To avoid any mishaps, it’s important to check the weight limits of the airline and if carry on luggage is not enough, buy extra.
Tip – Consider how much it is to upgrade to business class vs paying for the extra luggage! It is your wedding afterall so you deserve to travel in style!
Make sure to pack efficiently, opting for a garment bag that is compact enough to be stowed easily. Consider materials that add extra protection to your dress, like foam padding or acid-free tissue paper.
But it’s not just about stowing your dress in the closet. You may also require access to a steamer upon arrival, especially if your dress is made from delicate fabric. So, make sure to ask your hotel in advance or pack your own travel steamer .
With a little bit of preparation, you can keep your dress safe and wrinkle-free on its journey to your dream destination.
Airline Baggage Policies
For the common airlines, we looked into their most up-to-date policies and what you should expect when traveling with your wedding dress.
Your bridal party or a wedding guest may be able to help you with this by pooling luggage. My parents, sister and her partner gave me some of their allowance/carried a bag for me.
Delta Airlines
Allows one free checked bag for economy class passengers and two free checked bags for first class and business class passengers.
The maximum size for a checked bag is 62 inches (158 cm) in total dimensions. The maximum weight for a checked bag is 50 pounds (23 kg). For a wedding dress, Delta Air Lines recommends that you pack it in a garment bag and check it as a regular bag.
Southwest Airlines

American Airlines

Overall, Delta, Southwest, American and Virgin Atlantic seem to offer the best options for traveling with a wedding dress, as they allow you to check the dress for free if it won’t fit as a carry-on.
3. Work out how you are going to protect your dress in transit
As much as we’d like air travel to be effortless, the reality is that your wedding dress, love it as you might, is just another piece of luggage to the airline.
Fortunately, with some preparation and foresight, you can protect your dress and ensure it arrives at your destination unscathed.
What bag are you going to bring your dress in?
A large case suitcase will provide the most protection for your dress but it will also add the most weight to your luggage.
If you are going to check your dress underneath, you will definitely want a sturdy suitcase to protect the dress in transit.
If you plan on bringing the dress on the plane with you, I think this is less important.
I used a light high quality duffel bag like this one , I put my dress in the garmet bag then I rolled the dress to make it as small as possible. Keep in mind my dress was a big princess dress so it was still pretty huge even rolled.
It was a little crinkly when it arrived but it was nothing a steamer couldn’t fix!
Packing materials to add extra protection
As we have mentioned above, invest in a good quality garment bag that’s designed to protect delicate fabrics. It should have a padded, sturdy construction and be the correct size for your dress.
Stuffing tissue paper in the bodice and sleeves can help prevent creases, scratches, and wrinkles. Consider adding foam padding around the hemline of the dress to ensure that the dress shape and length remain intact while traveling.
4. Ask the flight attendants if they can place your dress in the onboard closet
While you may want to keep your dress with you, placing it in an overhead bin or under your seat can be risky, particularly if you’re headed to a crowded destination.
We did place ours in the overhead compartment and it was totally fine BUT it is even better if the flight attendants can store it for you for better protection.
Ask the flight attendants if they can place your dress in the onboard closet. You can also request them to set a priority tag on your garment bag to ensure it’s one of the first items off the aircraft when you arrive.
5. Should You Ship your Wedding Dress?
Provided you don’t have to pay for extra luggage, traveling on the airplane only costs you the price of the garment bag. Around $50 is easier to budget for than a usual $150-$300 price tag of shipping it straight to your venue. This includes the insurance, and fragile care.
Plus the wracking feeling that you are leaving your wedding dress out of your sight and in the hands of some delivery workers.
If you chose to ship your dress, here are a few quick tips. It’s important to document the condition of your dress before shipping, so take pictures and videos from every angle. Be sure to zip or button up the back of your dress to prevent bunching, but avoid bustling it.
When folding your gown, flip it inside out if it’s a simple design without embellishments. Place acid-free tissue paper between the folds to prevent creasing and snagging.
Finally, protect your gown by placing it in a plastic garment bag or a plastic bag if you don’t have one. Remember to keep all of these steps in mind for liability purposes.
Arriving at Your Destination with a Flawless Dress
Congratulations, you’ve arrived at your destination! The only thing left to do is to ensure that your wedding dress looks perfect for the big day.
First things first, locate a reputable dry cleaner that specializes in wedding dresses in case your dress requires last-minute cleaning or pressing. Don’t forget to check with your hotel; some offer on-site dry cleaning services. Our hotel in Africa did this for us.
To ensure your dress looks perfect, hang it up as soon as you arrive in your hotel room. Make sure the hanger is sturdy enough to support the weight of your dress.
If you aren’t going to use a dry cleaner, steam your dress by asking for an iron and ironing board from the hotel, or bring your travel steamer. If you’re in a rush or don’t want to risk damaging your dress with an iron, consider hanging your dress in the bathroom while you take a hot shower to let the steam do the work.
Finally, place your dress in a location where it won’t be disturbed. Avoid hanging it near windows or air conditioning units that could expose it to sunlight or moisture. Double check that you zip up and secure your garment bag to protect your dress from any unwanted exposure.
Voila! You’ve made it to your destination, and your dress looks as flawless as you do.
What to do in case of damage?
Unfortunately, sometimes, despite our best efforts, dresses can still be damaged during your travels. If you notice any damage once you arrive at your destination, take photos immediately and file a claim with the airline right away.
If the damage is not fixable, immediately locate a nearby reputable dry cleaner or tailor to assess what can be done before the wedding day. Always remember that your dress is replaceable, but the moments, memories, and love shared on your wedding day are irreplaceable.
Handling Dress Emergencies Abroad
When it comes to weddings, anything can happen. It is better to be prepared for the unexpected when it comes to your dress.
Do this by packing an emergency sewing kit that can handle last-minute developments, such as a rip or tear. Consider adding supplies like needles, thread, safety pins, and fabric tape. The venue, hotel, or resort you are staying in, will have an onsite tailor that can fix mini-emergencies for you.
For common dress issues, such as wrinkles or stains, have some quick fixes up your sleeve, like using a travel steamer or spot cleaner. And don’t hesitate to reach out to a local tailor for more significant issues. Navigate any issues with a level head, and enjoy your big day knowing you’re prepared for anything.
It’s Ok to Ask For Help!
When traveling, it is acceptable to request additional assistance. If you feel uneasy about your dress going through the x-ray machine at security, you can ask a TSA agent if there is an alternative way to scan it.
Similarly, if you become anxious during your flight about your dress being stored in the closet, it is perfectly fine to approach a flight attendant and kindly inquire about checking on your stunning wedding gown.
Wedding Dress Travel can be Tough but It’s worth it!
It’s your big day and you want to ensure that your dress is in perfect shape. Preparing for your destination wedding involves some planning to help you travel without any stress and enjoy a flawless event.

It's no secret that hosting a destination wedding requires plenty of logistical planning. Between booking a dreamy wedding location , helping coordinate travel with loved ones, and designing your dream day with your vendors, transportation logistics for your wedding dress may slip your mind. But as you're planning a far-flung celebration, you'll need to determine how to transport your gown to the place you'll exchange "I dos"—and if you're not sure how to travel with a wedding dress, we're here to help.
Whether your destination wedding venue is a tropical locale or you've selected somewhere domestic, it's completely possible to safely travel with a wedding dress. We tapped two industry experts to share everything you need to know about how to fly with a wedding dress, stress-free.
In this article:
Can You Take Your Wedding Dress on a Plane?
How to fly with a wedding dress, how to travel with a wedding dress on 5 major airlines.
As your destination wedding approaches, you might ask yourself: Can I take a wedding dress on a plane? It's a valid wedding planning question, and the answer is simple: Yes—but specific guidelines will vary among airlines. "It's absolutely possible to fly with a wedding dress, but you'll want to plan ahead," says Natasha Duff-Cole, owner of bridal boutique Ladies of Lineage . She notes that, while your dress designer or tailor can offer advice on how to travel with your specific design, it's up to you to get your wedding gown to the venue. "The designer is only responsible for designing your gown and getting it to the retailer you purchased from," she explains. "After alterations, it's the responsibility of the couple to make arrangements for the dress to get to its destination."
Once final alterations have been made and you're in the process of purchasing your plane ticket, how do you fly with a wedding gown? It's best to take yours as a carry-on, that way it doesn't leave your sight while traveling. "Your gown should never be added to your checked baggage," Duff-Cole warns. "Consider taking it on the plane with you in a garment bag that can't be seen through. And, if it's small enough to pack in your carry-on, make sure to add a bright ribbon or tag so you can easily detect and differentiate it."
If you choose this option, you'll need to confirm that your garment bag fits your airline's carry-on size. "Any carry-on items will need to fit the size requirements as some aircraft do not have extra room for oversized carry-on pieces," says a rep for Delta Airlines , noting that many customers prefer to use the carry-on option instead of checking the gown.
While most carry-on bags are to be stored in overhead compartments, some airplanes may have additional closet space that can be used. "Some aircraft have larger 'coat closets' in the first-class cabin area that can often be used for bridal gown storage," Delta's rep adds. "While close space is not guaranteed, once onboard the aircraft it's best to check with the flight attendants to see if they can accommodate a wedding dress." If you're interested in pursuing this option, call ahead to double-check if your plane will have extra space. You can also chat with customer service reps or flight attendants when you arrive at the airport for extra help.
If you'd rather board your flight knowing you'll have more space, consider purchasing a ticket for an extra seat if it fits your budget . This will allow you to lay out the dress without using a hanger. But, if this isn't a financially feasible option, you can always choose to ship the dress directly to the location. While this won't allow you to keep track of the gown mid-air, it will give you peace of mind knowing that you won't have to look for space on the plane.
But, if you'd rather have your gown with you until you reach the wedding destination, you can always pack your dress carefully . "Keep your dress in the bag that it came in, or purchase a sturdy garment bag to pack it in," suggests Margaret Kane, founder of Margaret Rose Events . "Plus, ensure that whatever the dress is packed in contains a waterproof layer such as plastic, just in case something spills during transit." Not only is this important for airplane storage, it'll help protect your gown during TSA screening too. We recommend covering the dress with colorless, acid-free tissue paper. This will prevent creases from forming during travel. But before pulling out an iron or a portable steamer to remove wrinkles on the wedding day, touch base with your dress designer or a trusted dry-cleaner to learn how to properly treat your wedding dress. "It's important to know what fabric your gown is designed from and whether it is press only or can be steamed," Duff-Cole says. "For example, all silk requires to be pressed, and steaming can shrink a hem or cause discoloration of the fabric." What matters most, though, is that you give your gown ample time to breathe post-travel. "I recommend opening the dress bag and letting the dress breathe for at least 24 hours before putting it on," Kane advises.
Once you know how to treat your wedding dress, you'll be able to remove wrinkles at your destination wedding venue. "If you trust yourself or a family member, a gown can be pressed with a clean iron, or household steamers can steam a gown if the fabric allows," Duff-Cole adds. "If you plan to iron your dress, make sure the iron is filled with clean water, the base is clean and you test the iron on a clean surface before your dress. The ironing board should also be checked and plan to pack a clean cover just in case you need one." Alternatively, she notes that you can always reach out to your planner or coordinator for guidance before the big day arrives: "Ask your wedding planner if they offer a day of service for pressing or steaming, or if they can recommend any local companies."
Now you're a budding expert on traveling with a wedding dress. But to simplify the process even more, we share how to fly with a wedding dress on five major US airlines.
Delta Airlines
Delta designates a section on its website to destination wedding travel tips, where it specifies that clients often carry on their gowns. Even if you're flying coach, the crew can sometimes accommodate by hanging the dress in a first-class coat closet. Again, it's important for you to follow baggage size guidelines in case there's no room for your dress in the inflight wardrobe. If you will check your gown, the airline has a convenient app to track your belongings. "If a customer is checking their wedding dress, we recommend using the FlyDelta app to track the status of their checked baggage throughout the entire travel journey," Delta's rep explains. "If a customer needs any assistance with their checked baggage, it's best to report any mishandled items to a Delta Baggage Service Center or file a claim online to receive assistance."
You may also want to take advantage of Delta's Early Valet program. About 45 minutes prior to boarding, a gate agent will preload your dress to the overhead bin directly above your seat, so no more fretting about cramming it in some opening 12 rows back—or not finding any space at all. Oh, and it's free! But it's only available on select routes and vessels, so research ahead of time.
American Airlines
Customers are allowed a soft-sided garment bag in lieu of a carry-on bag (get specific dimensions and details here ). But keep in mind, only some American Airlines aircraft feature closets for hanging garments, and those with the space give priority to passengers with other carry-ons that can't be stowed overhead (think: wheelchairs, walkers, bicycles, and surfboards).
JetBlue doesn't have closets or other hanging space , but your wedding attire can definitely be stored in an overhead compartment. It counts as your personal item or your carry-on (most likely the latter, especially if your gown is particularly voluminous), as long as your garment bag is securely packed and meets all JetBlue baggage requirements . Fun fact: If you end up purchasing a separate seat for your dress, it's also entitled to a carry-on ( seriously !). Be careful, though: Some carry-on items can be checked at the gate due to weight or size issues.
Southwest Airlines
As with most airlines, you get one carry-on and one personal item on Southwest Airlines. Crew members will typically help accommodate for wedding attire, laying your fragile dress—wrapped in a proper garment bag—carefully in an overhead compartment, either atop other suitcases or in its own space, depending on availability. (Note that Southwest does not have closets to hang your gown.) Of course, this applies as long as you adhere to Southwest's carry-on bag dimensions .
United Airlines
United Airlines recommends you carry on versus check any high-value, fragile or perishable belongings, including "garment bags not designed for travel," and will accept these specialty items (AKA your packed-up wedding dress) as carry-ons. Gate agents and crew members will be as accommodating as possible with your wedding ensemble, space permitting. See United's carry-on size restrictions here .
When in doubt, call your airline to get the exact answers you need based on your circumstances. And one last thing, as we mentioned above: You won't regret bringing a fabric steamer with you or contacting your destination site about steaming options, since you can't always guarantee a totally wrinkle-free dress upon arrival.

Planning a destination wedding is both exciting and challenging; while the idea of getting married in a far-flung locale is undeniably appealing, managing all the logistical challenges a distant celebration poses can be tricky. For example, even if the wedding is all-inclusive once you arrive, getting there in one piece, with all your belongings ( and without forgetting anything at home!), can feel overwhelming. When packing for your own destination wedding then, you'll want to make sure you have a plan for how to travel with your wedding dress, suit, or tuxedo. If you're a guest, it's also wise to think ahead when it comes to traveling with your formal attire—otherwise, you may just be stuck wearing sweats to the ceremony and reception.
According to wedding planner Alexa Blanco, "As fun as it is to have a destination wedding , traveling from one place to another with your wedding dress might ruin some of the fun if you don't plan ahead. Planning ahead is the key to having a seamless experience, even before officially starting the wedding weekend." Bridal fashion stylist Hope LaVine echos that point, and also adds that your best bet is to always pack what you plan to wear to the ceremony in a carry-on bag (and this rule applies to more than just the dress or suit). "If you’re flying, bring anything important to the event in the carry-on: your shapewear, shoes, undergarments, jewelry, and hair accessories," she says. "Anything vital to the day besides the suit or dress, pack that in a carry-on bag as well."

What to Know Before Traveling With a Wedding Dress or Suit
When you purchase your dress or suit, the retailer you shopped with should provide a garment bag that can safely house your attire. What's more, your big-day look will most likely be packed up and ready for travel following your final fitting , so it's best to leave it packed in the bag until you arrive at your destination.
If you didn’t purchase your attire from a retailer that regularly works with wedding attire, or if your dress or suit didn't come with a garment bag, you can easily purchase one online. "[For a wedding dress,] you’ll want to make sure the hanger straps are on the clothing hanger, loop them around as many times needed till they take the weight off the straps of the garment if there are straps," says LaVine. "Then, if you have a train, grab the loop that is underneath the train and put it onto the hook of the hanger. This will more evenly distribute the weight of your garment and make for easier folding."
Knowing to leave your wedding dress, suit, or tuxedo in the garment bag is just half the battle, though; it's also essential that you also pack it properly . "When folding it into a carry-on, you can start by placing the middle of the garment inside, then take the top and fold it over, and take the bottom and fold it over," explains LaVine. "This will create a three-fold."
Before traveling with your attire, LaVine strongly urges couples to put their personal information (name, phone number, email, and a local address where they can be reached) on or inside the garment bag. Although it's unlikely that you'll let your wedding attire out of your sight while traveling, accidents can and do happen so it's best to plan ahead.
How to Travel With a Wedding Dress or Suit by Plane
Photos by Moni & Adri Weddings / Design by Tiana Crispino
Flying to your destination wedding location? Traveling with your big-day attire as a carry-on item is the single best way to ensure everything arrives safely. "Never, ever, ever check your wedding dress for a flight," warns LaVine. "You just never know what could happen to the checked bag. And that's not the stress we are trying to have on the wedding week!"
That said, you have a few different options for getting your attire on the plane: The most obvious choice is to carefully fold your wedding dress, suit, or tuxedo into a small piece of carry-on luggage and store it in the overhead bins. However, if your clothing is bulkier or more delicate, putting the garment bag into a suitcase might not be an option. In this case, LaVine says you might choose to simply hold the garment bag (one that is waterproof and opaque, not see-through) for the duration of the journey. "Depending on the size or weight, this may be uncomfortable for long periods of travel, but it’s definitely doable," she adds. If you're lucky, the in-flight crew might even help you secure your attire for the trip. "Sometimes you'll get an extra sweet flight attendant that lets you hang the dress in the closet at the front of the plane," says LaVine. "Don't count on this, but definitely ask. If they can't accommodate that, then the overhead bin will do just fine!" You can also consider purchasing an extra seat for your ensembles, though Blanco explains that different airlines have different rules, so check in with your airline to inquire about their "guidelines in regards to this matter" before booking a second ticket, she shares.
Need more advice? Here are Blanco's top three tips to always remember when flying with your wedding attire. "Tip number one: Arrive early. Trust me, running around an airport carrying a suit and dress is no joke (true story). Tip number two: Travel light—the less the better. The wedding dress alone is heavy, so I highly recommend you make sure the rest of your luggage is easy to walk around with. Tip number three (and my favorite): If it's within your budget possibilities, pay the early boarding fee. This will allow you to get ahead on the overhead bin space and make it easier to store your suit or gown."
How to Travel With a Wedding Dress or Suit by Car
If you’re driving to your wedding and plan to be in a car for long stretches of time, it's best to lay your attire flat, utilizing either a trunk or a backseat. "The backseat is preferred because you’ll have A/C," says LaVine. "You don't want to leave your [attire] in a hot car for a long period of time as wedding dresses, especially those with beading , tend to yellow with heat. The cooler, or darker the place, the better."
While shipping your attire might seem like a good idea, LaVine strongly cautions against it. There's nothing more stressful than trying to track these important, expensive garments and realizing they might not arrive on time. What's more, you'll always handle your wedding attire with more care and consideration than an outsider would.
It's important to remember that subjecting your wedding attire to any type of travel can result in wrinkles. If you start to see some form en route to your destination, don't panic: A careful steam will remove creases in no time. Once you arrive at your destination, remove your attire from the garment bag to let the fabric settle; this will remove some wrinkles, and you can steam the rest as necessary, LaVine says.
How to Travel With a Wedding Guest Dress or Suit
Photos by Daniel Lopez Perez and Zibetti & Co / Design by Tiana Crispino
You may not be the bride and groom, but bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents, and wedding guests all drop a pretty penny on wedding-day attire, and you don’t want your looks to get lost in transit, either. Just like the couple of the hour, it's always best to travel with your outfits in your carry-on suitcase. "I would hate to see a bridesmaid not being able to stand next to her best friend getting married because her dress was in her lost checked back," says LaVine. "I always say get ahead of the problem: Don't check the bag."
Once you arrive at your hotel, take your outfits out of their garment bags, which will help wrinkles that were created in transit fall; for any stubborn bends, LaVine recommends steaming the garment ahead of the celebration. "Try to avoid steaming on the wedding day because you want the garment to have time to dry before you get into it and create more wrinkles," she explains.
If you left your steamer at home, don’t sweat it: Hang your outfit in the bathroom next to the shower and turn the hot water on all the way. Close the bathroom door and let your clothes steam in the room for as long as it takes to get the wrinkles all the way you. It may not work for super stubborn wrinkles, but it’ll definitely make your formalwear look more presentable.

How to Travel and Fly With Your Wedding Dress
There’s nothing more exciting than marrying in a romantic destination, however, planning the logistics for a jet-set wedding takes some organisation and research.
While most of the wedding co-ordination can be conducted by phone and email, some things require a personal touch – such as transferring your wedding dress abroad.
The Dos And Don’ts Of Traveling With Your Wedding Dress
When it comes to this precious cargo, you’ll want to undertake due diligence to ensure it arrives as preserved and pristine as the day you bought it. The good news is that it’s entirely do-able, here’s how.
To ship or to fly?
The first question you’ll need to consider is whether you will ship you dress by courier or take it with you by air.
A courier can be an expensive option, and there is some jeopardy in it arriving on time, so early booking is a must. The dress also needs to be expertly packaged and protected in a suitable box that is sturdy and waterproof. Be sure to shop around for different couriers, as policies and prices vary.
Flying with your wedding dress, however, tends to be a more popular option as you can travel with it, so you know where it is at all times. There are a few considerations of you go down this route, let’s get into it…
Booking your flight
Before booking a flight, be sure to look at the detail and the terms of that airline, all airline’s have different policies and costs when it comes to travelling with a wedding dress.
For instance, Easyjet’s current policy requires you to pre-book a ‘large cabin bag’ allowance, or to check the item in as hold luggage. While British Airways also offers the option to carry it as either hand or checked-in luggage – terms and conditions apply, so be sure to check these.
You may want to air on the side of caution when checking-in a wedding dress, as you know – luggage can often get delayed or lost in transit. If you have no choice, then consider flying out a few days ahead of your wedding to buy you time should you need it.
Along with boxing it in a similar way to a courier, you’ll also want to heavily protect your dress against the elements, as cargo holds can be subject to extreme temperatures. Don’t forget to label your package with all your outbound details too.
Should you decide to carry your dress, think about where it will be stored on the flight. This might be the overhead locker, so you’ll want to make sure it’s well protected – we’ll come to this shortly. There’s also a difference in flying short-haul and long haul. Long-haul aircraft tend to have hanging closets on board most fleet, which means you can hang your dress up if there’s space, again speak to the airline about this who can advise depending on the plane for the flight.
Dress etiquette
Once you’re booked on a flight, there’s the small matter of how to carry your dress. First thing’s first, speak to the wedding dress supplier you bought it from. They will be very familiar with transferring dresses abroad, and will be able to offer some helpful insight.
They will know the designer, including the fabrics and materials used, and should be able to advise on what sort of packaging will work best to avoid creases, rips, or ruin. They may also still have the original box, special tissue, or packaging in storage, which will custom fit your dress – so don’t be afraid to ask.
Packging your dress
Now for the most important part – packing your wedding dress.
If you’re packing your dress into a piece of luggage, first hang it straight on the hanger. Next, zip it into the garment bag it came with carefully. This should ideally be water-proof. Laying the dress on the floor, remove the hanger (sadly this can’t come on board), and squash the air out of the package. To condense it down, roll it upwards to prevent creasing. There are a number of helpful YouTube videos to assist with this.
If your dress is highly detailed with lots of gems that could cause snagging, you’ll want to take a slightly different approach. Instead, lie the dress in its garment carrier on the floor. Cover the front entirely in acid-free tissue paper – as much as you feel necessary. Then, zip up the bag, squash out the air, and slowly roll it, before placing it carefully into luggage. Needless to say, your dress should be carried on its own with no other items in the suitcase.
If you’re planning to hold your dress on the flight, rather than put it in a suitcase, you’ll need a sturdy waterproof garment carrier with (plastic) hanger. If your dress is easy enough to fold up, then a compact convertible garment bag is a great storage option. Once again, there’s no harm speaking to your carrier ahead of flying to be clear on guidelines.
Other transport considerations
Of course, it’s not just flying you need to think about. There will be taxi or car transfers at either end of the trip. Book ample cars (or better still vans) to avoid any unnecessary squashes, and where possible pack a hanger to carry them in the car.
If you’re checking into a hotel, inform them in advance that you’re arriving with your wedding dress, so that their team can be prepared for your arrival and quick room transfer where you can then get your dress out and hang it up.
Arriving into your destination
When you arrive abroad, avoid unpacking your dress until you’re at your final destination. Once there, unpack your dress carefully, putting tissues and packaging to one side for your return journey. Open the dress out of the bag and let it breathe for 24 hours.
And finally, give yourself enough time to breathe. Weddings are charged occasions, without the added exhaustion that comes with travel. If you can, try and give yourself a few days between arriving and saying ‘I do’. Your future married self will thank you for it!

Hand baggage allowance
Everything you can and can't take into the cabin..
This page tells you about how much hand baggage you can take into the cabin with you, as well as all the items you can and can't take onboard.
To find out how much baggage you can check into the hold, take a look at our Check in baggage allowance page. Alternatively, visit our liquid restrictions page , to find out how much you can take onboard our flights.
Hand baggage is included as part of all of our tickets, and depending on the cabin you might be able to take more than just the one bag. Whichever cabin you’re in, the size of your bag needs to be a maximum of 23 x 36 x 56cm (that's around 9 x 14 x 22 inches).
Important: You must be able to place your hand baggage in the overhead bins unaided.
On this page:
Economy and Premium
Children's hand baggage.
Additional items you can take onboard
Items not allowed onboard in your hand luggage
Hypodermic needles.
Additional security measures
Musical instruments
Garment bags, wedding dresses and suits.
All passengers flying in our Economy or Premium cabins can take one piece of hand baggage per person weighing up to 10kg (or 22lb).
All Upper Class passengers can take up to two pieces of hand baggage per person, weighing up to 12kg (26lb) for one bag, or up to 16kg (35lb) combined weight. So for example, you could take a 12kg bag and another little bag of 4kg.
Babies and toddlers aged 0-23 months are entitled to one bag each weighing up to 6kg (or 13lb).
Any children aged 2+ years are entitled to the same amount of hand baggage as an adult in the cabin allowances shown above .
When travelling with infants or children you can bring a fully collapsible pushchair and car seat, in addition to the free check in allowance.
Additional items you can take with you
To help with baggage conundrums, we’ve compiled the following list to clarify the bits and bobs you can take onboard in addition to the allowances above:
- Your handbag, small backpack/rucksack, pocketbook or purse, as you would normally use it (in other words, not just being used to contain items that would otherwise be regarded as baggage)
- Your overcoat or wrap
- Your umbrella or walking stick (these cannot be pointed or sharp)
- A small camera and/or pair of binoculars
- A reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight
- An infant’s food (for consumption on the flight)
- A small amount of duty free goods
- Headphones for onboard use (they’ll need the standard 3.5mm jack).
You can bring laptops onboard, as long as you can fit them into your hand baggage.
Make sure you have a look at our Mobility aids and wheelchairs page for all the information on this.
- Smart bags (unless the batteries can be removed)
- Torch-style cigarette lighters
- Non-safety matches
- Toy or replica guns (plastic or metal)
- Sharp items – this includes household items such as household cutlery, knives (of any length), paper knives, razor blades or darts
- Hypodermic syringes – unless you have a medical condition that requires you to inject on the flight. Find more information below .
For more information, please refer to our page on flying with medication .
Some instruments might be small enough to fit into your hand baggage. Check the allowances above to see how much you can take into the cabin .
Alternatively, you can carry a maximum of two instruments onboard if you book a seat for each one. Each instrument cannot exceed 75kg (165 lb) and its centre of mass should be no more than 30cm (12 inches) above the top of the seat cushion. This is to make sure it doesn't fall onto anyone next to you (that could be awkward).
To book an extra seat for a musical instrument, please contact us in advance of your flight.
If your musical instrument is too big to fit into your hand baggage, you can put it in the hold, although you might need to pay an additional fee if it takes you over your check in baggage allowance. You can find more information on our Check in baggage allowances page.
Garment bags
A garment bag can only be used as your hand baggage in Economy or Premium if it fits the dimensions of the hand baggage allowance. If you’d like to bring one but it exceeds 23 x 36 x 56 cm, it will need to be as additional checked in baggage .
Please note that if the separate suitcase is outside of your baggage allowance you will need to purchase additional baggage .
