The Gay Travel Experience: Singapore

Singapore is a marvelous, glimmering  Southeast Asian  destination that gay travelers love to visit. A major business hub, gay locals and ex-pats meld together, forming a strong and vibrant gay community.

Singapore gay travel

Gay nightlife thrives in Singapore. To the surprise of many tourists, the city has a decent bunch of entertaining gay bars and saunas to explore.

I discovered so much about local gay life during my brief yet action-packed visit to Singapore. I was lucky enough to make friends with a few gay locals along with their ex-pat friends who introduced me to the city.

Singapore gay travel

Flawlessly landscaped city blocks, modern architecture, and futuristic attractions are just a few of the big draws of visiting Singapore. When you add in delicious food, gay nightlife, and unbelievable hotel options booking a trip here sounds like a no-brainer!

Gay Singapore: Hotels & Where to Stay

Singapore city center hotels near Raffles Place or Marina Bay are the most convenient places to stay. They’re great for easy access on foot to the city’s main attractions. Hotels anywhere nearby the Singapore Marina or Singapore River will be a good option.

Marina Bay Sands Hotel

For the best views, check hotels in Boat Quay , the neighborhood that borders the marina to the north. You definitely won’t be disappointed.

The famous Marina Bay Sands is one of the most exclusive hotels in Singapore. If you haven’t already heard about this luxurious property, it’s known for having the world’s largest infinity pool. You can only access it if you’re a guest of the hotel!

Singapore Hotels I Recommend

Here are a few other fantastic hotels and hostels for gay travelers in Singapore that are highly rated, affordable, and perfectly located for exploring the city.

Clan Hotel Singapore

The Clan Hotel Singapore

Parkroyal Collection

Wink Capsule Hostel

Singapore Carlton Hotel

Carlton Hotel Singapore

Singapore hostels.

Hostels in Singapore are especially popular with travelers making their way through Southeast Asia since the city is quite expensive. Be careful not to accidentally book any of the day-use-only listings. In general, hostels will cost at least 35 euros ($40 USD) per night.

I loved the cozy and modern B.E.A.T. Capsule Hostel , located directly on the Singapore River close to the marina. This hostel was by far the best I’ve ever stayed in. Air-conditioned and private, it was perfect for spending a few nights.

The Singapore Gay District

Even though Singapore is a conservative nation, that hasn’t stopped a vibrant gay neighborhood from thriving here.

Singapore’s gay district is effectively the  Chinatown neighborhood . And while it’s not as ostentatious as the gay districts of big-time gay destinations, it boasts a range of gay nightlife venues and LGBT-friendly establishments.

gay Singapore

The city’s gay district is in a convenient location, too. As I recommended in the sections above, staying anywhere in the southern half of Singapore’s Central Area  will make it super convenient to access the local gay bars.

From what I could tell, though, gay locals don’t live exclusively in the Singapore gay area. LGBT people live all over the city. Gay bars tend to concentrate in Chinatown, but don’t limit yourself to staying in this neighborhood!

Singapore Gay Travel Experiences

The iconic Gardens By The Bay was my favorite spot in Singapore. But, there’s much more to it than the famous Supertree Grove!

Take a walk along the pond at Gardens by the Bay for some tranquility and to escape the tourist crowds. There are plenty of hidden walkways with diverse plantings to see. See the different Gardens By The Bay attractions in the video below.

Explore Marina Bay

Walking along Marina Bay is a great option for an entire afternoon. You can take in views of the skyline while strolling along the waterfront.

I started my journey from my hostel on Boat Quay and walked to the shops at Marina Bay Sands, where I could cool off in the air conditioning.

gay traveler at Marina bay

Along Boat Quay are a bunch of small outdoor restaurants overlooking the fountain in the river. This area of town is where you will find the cheapest beer in the city, and it really comes alive after sunset.

Alcohol can be expensive in Singapore, but this adorable waterfront promenade is perfect for an evening of cheap drinks. I ate at Forum Restaurant, however, most restaurants here more or less offer the same options.

Marina Bay Singapore

The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands is quite a pleasant place to walk through and window shop. It’s an ultra-modern mall with high-end stores and cafés. On the lowest level, there’s a food court where you can get some cheap eats.

The Maxwell Hawker Center

Locals and tourists alike will tell you to go to the Maxwell Hawker Center . This no-frills outdoor food stall building is great for experiencing local foods.

Maxwell hawker center

Expect dozens of tables bustling with people from all walks of life. Bring cash, as most places either don’t take credit cards or only accept local bank cards.

Maxwell hawker center

The Maxwell Hawker Center is best if you’re having an earlier dinner. After 9 PM things start to die down and the stalls close.

Make your way to Singapore’s Chinatown for delicious late-night restaurant options. There is a mix of food trucks and restaurants with air conditioning at the Chinatown food market.

places to visit in Singapore

More Things to Do in Singapore

Take a walk around  Raffles Place , a beautiful outdoor plaza and promenade near the city’s downtown. This is the best spot to absorb the bustle of Singapore without being surrounded by cars whirring by. It’s a picturesque, pedestrian-only zone with plenty of shopping.

Gardens by the Bay

Sentosa is an island south of Singapore’s downtown that locals love to visit for a relaxing day on the beach. The island is reachable by transit, but going by taxi is much more convenient.

There’s also a fantastic cable car that connects mainland Singapore to Sentosa!

Singapore Gay Bars

Dorothy’s is a compact Wizard of Oz-themed gay bar in Singapore’s Chinatown neighborhood. The staff here is super friendly and welcoming to foreigners. The bar has cozy seating and a cozy little terrace overlooking the street below.

Dorothy's gay bar Singapore

The vibe at Dorothy’s is definitely more relaxed than your typical gay bar, but I found this to be enjoyable. They’re open from 6 PM until 1 AM on weekdays. On Saturday nights, they close a bit later at 2 AM.

Tantric Bar

Tantric Bar  was definitely my favorite Singapore gay bar. It’s popular with locals, travelers, and ex-pats. When I visited on a Saturday night, the bar packed in with people around 2 AM. It was such a fun spot.

Singapore gay bar

The drag queens here were so entertaining, strutting down the main walkway of the outdoor space that connects Tantric and the adjacent Backstage Bar. The two bars have two distinct names but are essentially the same gay bar.

The complex is pretty big too, with two outdoor patios, a lounge bar area, and another indoor space where you can stand at high-top tables.

drag show in Singapore

Soon after I arrived at Tantric, I met a local gay Singaporean! He introduced me to his gay friends, who had moved to Singapore from different countries like France and Costa Rica. Everyone here was so friendly eager to make new friends.

Singapore gay club

Lluvia is one other local gay bar and restaurant worth mentioning, though they’re not nearly as popular as Tantric and Dorothy’s.

Since table reservations are required in advance, it can be hard for solo travelers to explore. But if you’ve got a buddy, Lluvia is great for karaoke nights!

Singapore Gay Saunas

Given how conservative the country is, it might surprise you that Singapore has several gay saunas to explore.

Keybox is the biggest gay sauna in Singapore and has recently moved to a new 5,000-square-foot space. A membership card costs 10 Singaporean dollars and rates are tiered by age.

Singapore gay sauna

Ten Mens Club is a fantastic second gay sauna option. Their facilities are quite modern and they offer drinks and massage services. You can find Ten Mens  Club’s events and promotions via the private telegram groups listed on their page.

Shogun Club  is another gay sauna worth a mention. I haven’t been here myself, but the reviews online are decent. The latest updated  information is available through private Telegram chats that you can join via posts on the club’s Facebook.

Before you head to the sauna, grab a pair of sexy underwear or jockstrap to wear!

Singapore Travel Tips

Pack for tropical weather.

Right on the equator, Singapore will be extremely hot and humid all year. I recommend you bring breathable clothing, pack a set of cotton handkerchiefs for sweaty day adventures, and carry an insulated water bottle so you never have to drink hot water.

See plenty more suggestions in wolfyy’s list of  what to pack for tropical destinations . You’ll find my favorite waterproof gear, lightweight clothing ideas, rain gear, and tons more.

Singapore travel tips

Local Luggage Storage

There are plenty of options for short-term luggage storage in Singapore , ideal if you want to stash your bags somewhere more convenient to your departure destination, or if your hostel can’t hold your luggage any longer.

Singapore gay travel

Singapore is Pretty Expensive

Singapore is quite expensive for a city in Southeast Asia. Prices will be about the same as in most Northern European cities. However, it is easy to get by on a strict budget if you eat at the local food stands, stay in a hostel, and drink in moderation!

Singapore gay travel guide

Taxis are relatively cheap, which is a plus. The price from the airport was reasonable. Download the Grab Taxi application and you’ll be good to go.

Singapore Gay Rights

One may think that the modernity of Singapore would come along with some gay rights. Only recently in August 2022 did Singapore’s conservative government move to abolish a colonial-era ban on same-sex sexual activity.

Singapore gay rights

There are still no protections for LGBT individuals though, and gay marriage is still not recognized in Singapore. But, since the city is a diverse global business hub, the LGBT community is decently tolerated.

In 2019, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong stated that everyone is welcome to come work in the country regardless of their sexual orientation. But, he also mentioned that visitors must recognize Singapore’s conservative culture and anti-gay laws.

Singapore gay life

Gay rights challenges aside, it is comforting that Singapore has gay bars and events that allow the LGBT community to come together.

Singapore has a long way to go to catch up with neighboring Asian countries such as India and Taiwan, where positive change has occurred recently.

Next, check out destinations just north of Singapore like the Malaysian cities of Penang and Kuala Lumpur .

Beyond Your Imagination

Set sail in a new direction with our custom itinerary between two of the world’s most iconic cities, Singapore and Bangkok – both wonders on their own and the perfect endpoints to an extraordinary experience.

Singapore welcomes all. A tiny but mighty nation-city of endless wonder, and innovation. From fascinating iconic architecture to the world’s best shopping to streets packed with history and charm. And then there’s the food! No place on earth has more delectable choices at all levels than Singapore. Except maybe Bangkok!

Nine days later, you’ll arrive in the bustling, multi-layered city of Bangkok, where revered traditions and history blend seamlessly into a pulsing modern city. Thrill at the wonder and majesty of the city’s many temples and palace sights. Lose yourself in the vibrant markets. Take a boat trip down Chao Praya. And discover a world of never-ending delight in Bangkok’s fascinating food scene. We’ll make it easy to explore both cities with pre and post-cruise programs available in late March.

The Contrasts of Malaysia

Our first stop is Port Klang, gateway to Malaysia’ capital city of Kuala Lumpur, one of the worlds’ fastest growing cities dotted with landmarks ranging from skyscrapers to mosques to gleaming parks and fascinating neighborhoods. Don’t miss the iconic twin towers, Batu caves, or incredible Chinatown. Markets abound offering virtually everything you can imagine!

The other side of Malaysia awaits when we visit the serenely beautiful tropical island of Langkawi. This UNESCO Heritage Site is the center of an archipelago of over 90 distinct islands in the Andaman Sea, brimming with life on in a unique natural landscape surrounded by pearl white beaches. From ancient rainforests to warm tropical waters to superb duty-free shopping, there’s no island with so much to offer in all of Asia.

A Taste of Vietnam & Cambodia

After two relaxing days at sea you’ll arrive in Ho Chi Minh city via the nearby port town of Phu My. Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh is one of Asia’s most exciting cities. The economic heart of Vietnam has become a vibrant metropolis where old and new Vietnam blend seamlessly together in a city always looking towards the future. Our extended stay allows you plenty of time to explore it like a local. Just watch out for the city’s legendary traffic.

The coastal town of Sihanoukville, Cambodia boasts some of the most pristine beaches in Asia and offers a fascinating glimpse into authentic life on gulf of Thailand. Excellent dive sites and amazing seafood compete with ancient temples to welcome savvy travelers.

Amazing Thailand

Atlantis returns to the land of smiles in a big way, starting with the picture-perfect tropical island of Ko Samui. Thailand’s second largest island is ringed with powder white beaches surrounding dense mountainous rainforest. From magical Buddhist temples to vibrant beach towns, to crystal-clear waters, there are few places like it on earth.

After your glorious island day, we’ll sail on to Bangkok – the thriving heart of Thailand and a city of endless contrasts. Explore the Grand Galace, golden Buddha, and other historical sites with ease. Shop everywhere – from upscale boutiques to thai designers to a cornucopia of intriquing local markets. Take in the city’s famous gay nightlife with special events designed just for Atlantis.

And eat. Everything. Everywhere. All at once. There’s no better food scene in the world with something for all palates, styles, and tastes. You’ll never look at Thai food the same way again!

We’ll make it easy to explore Bangkok with a robust add-on package at top hotels with expert guides. Details will be available in late March.

Still hungry after all of that? Room service* is available around the clock including 24/7 pizza delivery!

LGBT Travel Guide: Singapore

singapore gay cruise

Chris McGrath/Getty Images

An ethnic, cultural, and religious melting pot if ever there was, the Southeast Asian city-state—sometimes referred to as the “little red dot"—is also home to a vibrant LGBTQ population and culture. Every year, Singapore's Pink Dot serves as a de facto Pride event and rallying call to revoke Singapore's archaic colonial era holdover, Section 377A, which criminalizes consensual sex between men and, in effect, officially makes homosexuality illegal.

Although the law is never actually enforced these days, its remaining on the books has the unfortunate effect of giving LGBTQ locals a second-class status, forbids Singapore media (movies, TV, etc.) and government tourism efforts from officially promoting homosexuality in any way, and results in censorship and even cancellation of explicitly queer film festivals, parties, and other events.

It's a sore spot for sure, yet visitors have absolutely nothing to fear from 377A, and in fact will find a surprisingly open and buzzing LGBTQ nightlife scene and plenty of inclusive things to see and do.

Pink Dot will see its 13th edition in 2021, and each year has seen a colorful array of high-profile Singaporean ambassadors and straight allies—such as former Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, rapper Subhas Nair, singer-actor Nathan Hartono, and Singapore's first openly queer athlete, Theresa Goh—as well as media campaigns directed by some of the country's most prolific filmmakers, including Boo Junfeng . Other out queer Singaporeans in the public eye include filmmaker Royston Tan and Otto Fong , a teacher and creator of an acclaimed series of children's educational comic books, "Sir Otto's Adventures in Science," and a TV program, Totally Totto .

Much of the LGBTQ nightlife is concentrated around Neil Road in the shophouse-lined Tanjong Pagar district, while current LGBTQ+ events can found on Time Out Singapore (type "LGBTQ+" in the search bar). English-language Asian LGBTQ website Dear Straight People also features plenty of Singapore coverage, from news to profiles to culture, and also boasts a YouTube channel .

Things To Do

Singapore's National Gallery is home to not only one of the most fantastic, extensive collections of Southeast Asian art (over 9,000 items), but also surprisingly queer, provocative and politically-charged work by LGBTQ artists. A series of sprawling galleries, stores, and restaurants situated within two connecting heritage buildings, Singapore's former Supreme Court and City Hall, the five-year-old National Gallery keeps most of its queer work in the contemporary section. Of particular note are video footage and items from Josef Ng’s 1994 performance piece, “Brother Cane,” which addressed the 1993 arrest and caning of 12 homosexuals for sexual solicitation in a gay cruising area. Ng was arrested as a result of this piece, which caused an uproar, and was reenacted in 2012 as "Archiving Cane" by Zihan Loo, another prolific queer Singaporean artist/performer/filmmaker/activist. Be sure to check out Loo's website for upcoming installations and performances, which take place in various galleries and spaces around Singapore, and events including the annual M1 Singapore Fringe Festival . Dates for the 2021 edition are TBA.

Contemporary art fans should also check what's on at independent space The Substation ; celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2020, programming ranges from installations to film to all manner of performance and music. Some queer artists and events can also be found at Chinatown's Utterly Art .

Beyond the fact that architect Moshe Safdie’s Changi Airport itself is a spectacle, thanks to the addition of an eye-popping rain vortex, garden, and other attractions to its Terminal 1 in 2019 (Terminal 2 will see its own transformation by 2024), those who just arrived in Singapore should plot out neighborhood explorations. Tiong Bahru is unique for its Peranakan heritage and businesses, and the Hindi Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple is decked out with countless (and still growing) sculptures, tributes, and depictions of the elephant-headed god Ganesha.

Meanwhile, the almost monthly gay Aquaholic Pool Party SG sees locals and visitors flock to the resort island of Sentosa (home to Universal Studios Singapore theme park) for wet and wild fun and DJ tunes.

Of course, no trip is complete without a photo op with the Merlion, and a swim in the Marina Bay Sands pool if you can swing a night's room reservation, since only hotel guests can use it.

LGBTQ Bars and Clubs

Most of Singapore’s LGBTQ bars are concentrated in the Tanjong Pagar district—meaning “cape of stakes” in Malay—along and around its Neil Road artery. Several of the most buzzy, lively spaces are part of the same group, starting with Tantric , which features both outdoor and indoor spaces. This is also where you can nurse cocktails and catch Singapore's growing stable of local drag stars, including Vyla Virus and Vanda Miss Joaquim , the latter a finalist from season two of "Drag Race Thailand" and subject of " The Rise of Vanda Miss Joaquim ," a short 2019 documentary.

Located just upstairs, sister venue May Wong's Café takes its name from Hollywood's first Asian star, Anna May Wong, who was featured and dramatized in Netflix's 2020 series, " Hollywood ." Besides a pool table, darts machine, and video screens, the café serves up East-meets-West cocktails and more classic creations.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2021—and relocated from its original location on Chinatown's Trengganu St. to Neil Road in 2015— Backstage Bar celebrates Broadway shows with posters and paraphernalia-lined walls.

The two-floor Taboo , located just across Neil Road, brings in a diverse LGBTQ and ethnic mix for dancing, drag performances, themed music nights, and drink specials (do bear in mind "specials" is used very loosely, since alcohol prices are insanely high due to over-the-top taxes in Singapore). Neil Road is also home to karaoke and beer-centric spot Ebar and Out Bar , the latter featuring a Canto-Mando dance pop night every second Saturday—with an appearance by glamorous Thailand-born drag personality Sammi Zhen —and retro tunes on last Saturdays.

Where to Eat

Adorable Pink Dot stickers greet you at Fort Canning's The Fabulous Baker Boy , a bright, pro-LGBTQ bakery and café where self-taught, openly gay pastry chef Juwanda crafts delicious, modern cakes—many bearing names that nod to gay culture and icons, like Ab Fab Red Velvet, Bette Midler, and Ms. Diana Ross— brekkie items, and coffee.

While Singapore's hawker centers offer a wide range of affordable traditional local foodie faves like chicken rice and a diverse range of craft beer, coffee, and hipster takes on traditional cuisine, you'd do well to hit up "Mod Sin" (short for "Modern Singapore") chef LG Han's Labyrinth . The Michelin-starred restaurant presents cutting edge, exquisite set menus in which Singaporean staples are reinterpreted with intensely local, seasonal ingredients that Han personally seeks out (ask to taste the stinger-less bee honey).

Also check out Mod Sin pioneer Willin Low's Relish by Wild Rocket : Although it specializes in burgers, Relish also serves up tasty twists on Singaporean and other Asian fare.

Where to Stay

Singapore's iconic grand dame hotel, Raffles Singapore , is the luxury brand's flagship property. Opened in 1887, it was closed from 2017 to 2019 for a complete overhaul; retaining its classic elegance, the updated Raffles includes a new white marble floor, air conditioning system and tech elements (although the light switches are still colonial era vintage), and even a tweaked signature Singapore Sling with lower sugar and increased alcohol content at its Long Bar (the cocktail's birthplace). The restaurants have also been changed up with celebrity chef-headed offerings BBR by Alain Ducasse in the Bar & Billiard Room, chef Anne Sophie Pic's La Dame De Pic, and Yi by MasterChef Jereme Leung. And Raffles Spa boasts an incredible menu of indulgences including Hydrotherapy Wellness Experiences.

One of Singapore's most anticipated brand new hotel openings in recent years is the 157-room Capitol Kempinski Hotel . Within walking distance to the spectacular Gardens By The Bay complex, it occupies two early 1900s heritage structures—the Capitol Building and Stamford House, which served as an extension of Raffles from 1911-1913. Originally slated to debut as The Patina in 2015, the Kempinski opened its doors in 2018, bringing with it uncluttered contemporary luxury. Rooms are creamy and latte-toned, blending European and Asian design elements. Don't expect much of the pool, though: It's an enclosed, small, thigh-high soaking affair, but does make for a good photo.

Another Singapore luxury brand flagship, the sprawling urban oasis Shangri-La spreads its 792 rooms over 15 acres and has seen all stripes of VIP guests, including President Obama.

If proximity to Tanjong Pagar's LGBTQ nightlife is your priority, 15-year-old boutique hotel The Scarlet —occupying a row of 13 former shophouses in Chinatown—is a sassy, chic, and colorful choice with design flair for days.

For Singapore's best pools, you can't beat a stay at the iconic Marina Bay Sands , the chic and "neoclassical" SO Sofitel , or Marina Bay's Mandarin Oriental (the room views are also fantastic). Over on Sentosa island, you'll also find the resort-style W Singapore and Capella , a lush, ambrosial getaway that has seen the likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Martha Stewart.

'Gay summer camp': How cruises create space for LGBTQ+ travelers at sea

singapore gay cruise

As Sharon Moss' cruise vacation came to an end, the 42-year-old went big before going home.

Moss, who is fine with any pronoun but mostly uses they/them, spent the last day of February sailing to the Caribbean on Celebrity Cruises' Reflection ship dancing in the pool with their girlfriend. Being surrounded by fellow guests decked out in feather boas, shower curtains and lopsided wigs – the party's theme was "She's a Mess" – Moss felt there was something different about the trip.

The voyage was Moss' first trip with theLGBTQ travel company VACAYA and their first cruise since sailing with Disney Cruise Line as a child.

"People were waving at us, and we were like the stars of our little dance pool. It was just freeing and fun, and not something that you get to necessarily feel like you can do," Moss said. "You can't pop over to your local YMCA and be like, 'Can I have a dance party in the pool?'"

Before booking the sailing, the retired professional weightlifter said many mainstream cruises seemed more geared toward heteronormative families and they hadn't considered booking one. But in the wake of the pandemic, the couple craved a relaxing vacation. Both jumped at a chance for Moss' girlfriend to be somewhere "culturally entirely queer"because she had not had as much experience socializing in LGBTQ+ spaces.

For some LGBTQ+ travelers, gay cruises have offered a kind of haven on the seas. While early cruises catered primarily to gay men and lesbians, the market has grown in recent years, with more options aimed at a more diverse array of queer travelers.

'We have to be on guard a lot': Why safety comes first for so many LGBTQ travelers

When did LGBTQ+ cruises start?

Cruise operators that catered to gay and lesbian passengers began sailing in the '80s and '90s, according to a  timeline from IGLTA .

"When it first started, it was somewhat underground and they were definitely more in the charter side of things ... where people could be together with members of their community and get away and be free from families or work, you know, be out, because the world was so different in the '80s," John Tanzella, president and CEO of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, said.

The sailings were a tougher sell back then, though."It was probably really hard to get a cruise line to take a gay group (in the early days)," Tanzella said.

In some cases, ships carrying LGBTQ+ passengers were turned away from ports, he added. By contrast, today, cruise lines are "going after the market," and destinations court those sailings and their loyal customer base. "You know, a port city might host a reception the night before the cruise departs, like going that extra mile to welcome the cruisers," Tanzella said. In addition to chartering entire ships, IGLTA has members that host groups on nonspecialty sailings too.

'I just want to see more of us': The importance of seeing people like you while traveling

Jon Fenwick went on his first gay cruise in 2008 with Atlantis Events after some friends talked him into it. The 46-year-old enjoyed the trip so much that he made it a tradition of it, taking at least one LGBTQ+ cruise annually most years since. And he isn't the only one.

"You definitely see a lot of the same faces from trip to trip, and a lot of people would go on the same ones every year just to have a reunion, or sometimes we call it gay summer camp," said Fenwick, a government information technology specialist based in Arlington, Virginia.

The options were also more limited and siloed, with cruises aimed primarily at gay men or lesbians, he added. Over the past decade or so, though, the industry has made an increased effort be inclusive, and somenew cruise operators targeting a diverse clientele have entered the market.

Fenwick has met other gay passengers on mainstream cruises but said the experience isn't the same, "You definitely don't have the (same) freedom to be yourself on a regular cruise."

'We are the majority'

VACAYA is among those new companies catering to a diverse audience, with an emphasis on the LGBTQ+ community, as well as straight allies. The company, which also offers land-based vacations, launched its first trips in 2019.

"If you believe love is love, then you belong on a VACAYA vacation," said Patrick Gunn, the company's co-founder and CMO. The company has worked with Celebrity, Ponant, Emerald Cruises and others.

Those principles of inclusion guide what guests experience during their trip. VACAYA recently began giving out pronoun pins to help guests and staff use each other's preferred pronouns (the company also provides diversity and inclusion training to resort and cruise line partners).

The company also offers a wide range of programming. In addition to drag shows and pool parties, the VACAYA has also held a makeup seminar geared particularly toward nonbinary and transgender passengers.

"We believe in balance," Gunn said. "So, we love a good party, don't get me wrong, but we also love to wake up and go into port the next day."

On a March cruise that visited Panama, Colombia and more, passenger ages ranged from 21 to 91, according to co-founder and CEO Randle Roper. The company's clientele is predominantly gay men, but 20% of the sailing's guests were women.

Margaret Riedling, who joined VACAYA for the March sailing with her wife, found it refreshing. The 59-year-old had not taken an LGBTQ+ cruise since she was in her 20s.

"We have gay, straight, queer friends in our real lives," said Riedling, who lives in Spokane, Washington, and Palm Springs, California. "Why wouldn't we have them in our vacation life?"

Brand g Vacations, which was founded in 2011, also caters to a range of queer travelers, along with straight allies. The company offers river cruising, small-ship ocean cruises and land-based tours, according to its website.

That doesn't mean longer-running operators aren't inclusive. Among those, Atlantis is particularly popular among gay men but welcomes women, transgender and nonbinary guests, and "even straight parents," as well, CEO Rich Campbell said in an email.

And while Olivia Travel's guests primarily identify as cisgender lesbians and queer women, nonbinary and transgender guests have always been welcome, according to VP of marketing Autumn Nazarian.

For Roper's part, he said the kinds of sailings VACAYA aims to offer shift the dynamic LGBTQ+ people experience elsewhere, even if only for a week or two at a time.

"We all live in the minority every single day of our lives, and when we create these events, whether they're on a cruise ship or at a resort, we are the majority," he said.

Upcoming LGBTQ+ cruises

◾ Brand g Vacations will operate a Prague and Danube River itinerary – with two days in the Czech Republic city pre-cruise – from Aug. 12 through 21. Cabins on Amadeus River Cruises' Amadeus Silver III start at $4,499 per person based on double occupancy, according to Brand g's website .

State Department issues travel alert for LGBTQ people, events abroad

The alert follows a similar warning from the FBI and the DHS.

The U.S. State Department issued a "Worldwide Caution" alert on Friday, warning U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution due to "the increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against LGBTQI+ persons and events."

According to an administration official familiar with the matter, the alert is connected to the recent announcement from the FBI and Department of Homeland Security that foreign terrorist organizations might seek to exploit "LGBTQIA+-related events and venues," including events during 2024 Pride month, which begins in June.

The alert comes on the same day the State Department is commemorating the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia.

LGBTQ advocacy groups have issued a "state of emergency" in the U.S. following record-breaking waves of anti-LGBTQ legislation as well as a spike in reports of hate incidents.

These Are the Safest Destinations for LGBTQIA+ Travelers in 2024, According to a Travel Index

The No. 1 spot is a five-way tie between Canada, Malta, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain.

For LGBTQIA+ travelers, safety and inclusivity are important factors in vacation plans, and the latest Gay Travel Index once again sheds light on destinations that exceed expectations, fit the bill, or fall short. Since 2012, Spartacus has used a meticulous rubric for grading and ranking countries from the most queer-friendly to the least, providing a reliable metric — for locals and travelers alike — for which countries are improving, and which are getting worse.

The intensive rating system features 18 categories that range from anti-discrimination laws and transgender rights to oppressive religious influence, prosecution, and the death penalty. Zero points are the neutral mark, with points added or deducted based on human rights — or lack thereof. Both positive and negative, points are weighed against the severity of local law or customs. For instance, countries that still punish homosexuality with the death penalty get more deductions than countries that have the death penalty but don’t act on it.

In a five-way tie for first place this year, as the most queer-friendly destinations with 12 points each, are Canada, Malta, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain, followed closely by Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, Norway, and Uruguay. The U.S. earned a lukewarm ranking of 41, with a total of just four points. On the opposite end, the most hostile countries remain Saudi Arabia, Iran, Chechnya, and Afghanistan, all of which still practice the death penalty for homosexuality.

Notable this year was Norway, rising from 17 to 8, thanks largely to its reversal of conversion therapies . Estonia also leapt up from 15 spots to 32, due to the nation legalizing same-sex marriage . Meanwhile, the United Kingdom tumbled from 9 to 21, losing points for diminished LGBT marketing and hostile locals. The U.S. also lost ground, falling from 35 to 41 due to religious influence and hostile locals. Russia took the biggest plummet, from 177 in 2023 to 205, losing an additional five points for its increased prosecutions of LGBT people.

The index also ranks the 50 states individually, with unique-to-U.S. categories like hate crime laws, gay and trans panic defense, and queer infrastructure, while the censorship category reflects the various “Don’t Say Gay”-style laws across the country. With 14 points, New York earns the No. 1 spot for its LGBT protections, lack of censorship and conversion therapies, and concerted efforts put into LGBT marketing and infrastructure. California, Colorado, Nevada, and Oregon are all tied for second, followed by Washington, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New Mexico. Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Montana are some of the least queer-friendly states, with Oklahoma in last place for the second year in a row, due to censorship, lack of trans rights, and — as tragically evidenced by the recent murder of non-binary student Nex Benedict — hostile locals.

We're planning a Singapore / Thailand holiday for Feb 2025. London to Singapore, spend 2-3 nights there, then Singapore to Phuket for 5 nights beach break.

Not too fussed atm about who we fly with on the Singapore - Phuket leg.

The LHR to Sin leg is, and always has been in my experience, very busy.

I would get the flights as early as you can simply because that leg can get busy. There is a chance yo could miss a sale or deal on a through flight but those can be very good value even when a deal isnt on BUT if the major leg is filling (and they can do) it will cut into what the deals can manage.

d fly through and if doing the main leg with SIA then Phuket you have SIA and Scoot to choose from as a through ticket bought via SIA.

#1 - But how early did those flights book out? Just because they depart nearly full, doesn't mean they are sold out 9 months in advance. Most of the long hauls I fly to & from Thailand are pretty much full, yet I am able to book seats at a reasonable price just a few months out.

Singapore Airlines rewards staff with massive early bonuses after record-breaking profits

Singapore Airlines reported a record-breaking S$2.67 billion ($3.23 billion) profit, rewards staff with generous bonuses. Photo / Getty Images

The mid-year bonus arrives early for Singapore Airlines employees.

Singapore Airlines , one of the world’s premier airlines , is set to reward its staff generously following a year of unprecedented success.

A stock exchange filing announced last Wednesday that Singapore Airlines has achieved a phenomenal S$2.67 billion ($3.23 billion) profit for the fiscal year 2023-2024, a 24 per cent increase from the previous year.

Despite facing stiff competition, rising costs, and global uncertainties, Singapore Airlines bounced back strong , hitting 97 per cent of its pre-Covid passenger numbers by March.

The joyous moment prompted Singapore Airlines to distribute bonuses equivalent to 6.65 months’ pay plus an extra 1.5 months’ salary for pandemic -related efforts.

This is a similar effort done by Emirates , which granted its employees five weeks of bonus following its own record profit.

Better news even followed after the announcement, as Singapore Airlines ’ stock price increased by 0.4 per cent on Thursday, with a total increase of 4.3 per cent for the year.

However, while Singapore Airlines is soaring high, Bonza Airlines crashed at the unfortunate end of the aviation spectrum, as the budget airline collapsed less than 18 months after its first flight, leaving over 60,000 passengers stranded.

Analysts speculated that the collapse was caused by the failure to secure a foothold in Australia ’s highly competitive “Golden Triangle” market of Brisbane - Sydney -Melbourne.

“The Golden Triangle is so important because this is where most of the action happens and where the money is being made,” Professor Rico Merkert, deputy director at the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies at the University of Sydney Business School, told NCA NewsWire.

However, some say that the collapse was expected, as the airline already faced poor customer service, complaints, flight delays, and cancellations one month after their first flight .
