About Gargi College

Gargi College was established in the year 1967 and is a leading South Campus college of the University of Delhi. It is a college for women and offers education in Arts and Humanities, Commerce, Science and Education.

Gargi College was named after an enlightened woman named Gargi, figuring in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishada of the Vedic Age. She emerges as an intelligent and bold person embodying the spirit of inquiry juxtaposed with faith as is shown by her penetrating and challenging questions to the great sage Yajnavalkya. In the Upanishad Gargi seems to represent the intellectual potential of the race of Homo sapiens, which continues to manifest itself , in quest of ever-widening fields of knowledge.

Principal’s Message

Our college has been named after Gargi Vachaknavi, a sagacious and enlightened philosopher of the 7th Century who was ahead of her times and exemplified scholarly excellence, fearless astuteness, divergent thinking and the relentless ability to question. We cherish the same tradition and encourage our students to challenge themselves, be sceptical and ask questions in this fast- pacing and ever evolving world. We started our humble journey way back in the year 1967 as a women’s college with 207 students, two courses and a faculty strength of 16 members.

Since 1967, Gargi College has empowered women with a top-notch education, establishing itself as a leading college in India. It is a constituent college of the University of Delhi recognised by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an ‘A+’ grade. The college is well known for its academic offerings at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Arts, Science, and Commerce streams. Also, to encourage students towards research and innovation, it has developed an infrastructure facility for 'Bioinformatics' and started ‘The Gargi Pathfinder Award’.  

Gargi College enables students to thrive in their chosen fields by providing a vibrant and supportive atmosphere through modern infrastructure, robust academia and outstanding exposure opportunities. The student population is highly diverse, including more than 70% of students from across the country, creating a culturally rich environment. Moreover, the impressive student-faculty ratio of 24:1 ensures individual learning at Gargi College. 

While the college is considered safe for women, not all is rosy here! Several past incidents related to molestation and sexual harassment have raised eyebrows about the safety and security of the students at Gargi College.  

In this article, we have provided the most honest and unbiased review of Gargi College, considering both claims and promises made by the college and the feedback of students. 

The following table shows the NIRF ranking of Gargi College over the past 3 years: 

Gargi College is one of the leading and most sought-after colleges for arts and science in India. Getting ranked in the 31st position by NIRF demonstrates its strength in education and research. Despite its legacy of academic excellence, the college has witnessed a steady drop in its rankings, slipping by 8 positions in 2023 and by 7 positions in 2022. There can be a plethora of reasons to counter this trend. Although it seems, Gargi College has the potential to overcome its weaknesses and outshine once again!

Courses and Fee Structure

Gargi College is known for its high-quality education and research in arts, commerce and science. It provides a diverse spectrum of courses at UG and PG levels through 21 departments. Here’s the  Gargi College courses list  along with the fee structure. 

Curriculum and Pedagogy:

Gargi College has implemented the curriculum prescribed by the University of Delhi, which is updated and relevant to current needs. The university follows the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) which provides an interdisciplinary approach to learning.  As per the Self Study Report 2022, Gargi College has incorporated the following elements into its curriculum: 

• Add-on courses
• Multiple electives
• Curricular activities: Lectures, lab sessions, presentations, tutorials, guest lectures, case studies, experiential learning, internships etc
• Co-curricular activities: Seminars, workshops, conferences, competitions,  industrial visits etc
• Extracurricular activities: Cultural events, NSS Camp, blood donation camp, tree-plantation drive, sports competitions, etc.  
• Research and Innovation: Publishing books, chapters and papers in journals and conferences. 

Student Intake:

Given below is the course-wise student intake of Gargi College based on the NIRF 2023 report. 

• Gargi College offers a wide range of UG and PG courses in Humanities, Commerce, and Science, allowing students to pursue their chosen field of study. 
• As per research on multiple forums, students were found to be satisfied with the holistic curriculum and pedagogy used at Gargi College. The rounded curriculum represents its academic excellence and dedication to education. Students have also stated that the fee structure of the college is also quite affordable, especially given its reputation as a leading south campus college under DU.

The campus of Gargi College spreads over 13 acres of lush green area, featuring well-built infrastructure amongst diverse flora and fauna. Let’s explore the infrastructure and amenities offered by the college below. 

Gargi College has a well-stocked central library with a collection of 76,946 books and other reading materials. The library offers several facilities, such as a reading room, Web-OPAC, UGC-Inflibnet, and access to DULS e-resources. 

Laboratories :

The college has state-of-the-art laboratories for all the departments. The labs are not only spacious and well-ventilated but also well-equipped with the latest equipment, internet facilities and other academic resources. 

Auditorium/ Seminar Halls:

The college has a large and spacious auditorium with a seating capacity of 750. Adjoining the auditorium is a seminar hall with a seating capacity of 125. Both are equipped with air-conditioning and ICT facilities. The university has recently added an open-air stage in its infrastructure for conducting various events.  

A high-speed wireless internet facility is available across the campus of Gargi College. However, issues related to seamless internet access are an institutional weakness due to its location in a VIP area with jammers, resulting in restricted Wi-Fi connectivity. 

Activities :

Gargi College is well known for its annual fest known as ‘Reverie’ boosting sufficient exposure to develop the overall personality of students. Moreover, various student societies conduct different extracurricular activities throughout the year. Some of them are

Canteen and Cafe :

The canteen of Gargi College serves as a social hub for students, providing a variety of food items at affordable prices. Adjoining the canteen is a cafeteria known as ‘Happiness Corner’ and a Nescafe kiosk. 

Nearby Hangout Places :

Gargi College’s location is a hub of amazing hangout places. The area has a gamut of restaurants and cafes to enjoy with friends. And there’s nothing better than Delhi’s mouthwatering roadside food like Momos, Chole Bhatura and Kulche! On weekends, students can visit several historical places, parks, gardens, and markets mentioned below.

Overall, the infrastructure and facilities of Gargi College are highly impressive! The campus provides well-equipped laboratories, a library, an auditorium, a seminar hall, a canteen, a cafe and many other recreational facilities. On the other hand, hostel facilities are not offered by the college, but there are enough PG facilities around the campus. 

Apart from that, Gargi College provides a vibrant student environment to learn and grow. The plethora of student societies provides huge opportunities for students to develop their skills and potential. On top of that, the amazing hangout spots are the ultimate treat! 

Gargi College has a dedicated placement cell that provides ample internship and placement opportunities to students. Along with that, the cell conducts a plethora of seminars, webinars, training workshops, skill development courses, competitions and events. Some of them are the EY CAFTA Case Championship, Student Transformation Program, Placement Preparation Boot Camp, Elevate 3.0 (annual internship fair), etc.

• Gargi College has an active placement cell which not only provides the best opportunities but also trains students throughout the year to make them job-ready. 
• Based on our analysis, students have expressed satisfaction with the placement outcomes of Gargi College. In fact, the highest package offered in 2023 stood at INR 21.50 LPA. It represents the college’s dedication to providing better opportunities to students in leading companies. 
• We have also observed an upward trend in average salary packages over the past few years which is highly beneficial for students and the institution. 

Gargi College boasts a diverse student population consisting of students from all over the country. Let’s have a keener look at the demographics of Gargi College based on the NIRF 2023 report. 

Demographic Analysis:

The student population of Gargi College represents an impressive inter-state diversity with more than 72.5% of students hailing from outside Delhi. The crowd is just amazing creating an ecosystem of different cultures, religions, and castes. However, the college lacks global diversity with only 0.3% of international students. It should take some initiatives to attract more foreign students. 

Overall, the campus is pretty diverse and culturally rich. However, being a women’s college poses some restrictions in the overall development of students. 

Gargi College is home to some of the finest and highly talented faculty in the country. According to the SSR 2022 report, the college has 216 permanent faculty members with 71% of them holding PhD degrees. Additionally, there are 80 temporary and 15 guest faculty members. 

On online forums, students and alumni of Gargi College have expressed positive feedback about the faculty of the college. According to them, the teachers are highly qualified, disciplined and hardworking. They are friendly and supportive towards the students and guide them in personal and professional areas.  

While looking towards the administration and management of Gargi College, incidents related to molestation during the annual fest caught our attention. Students protested and demanded action from the administration for failing to protect them. In return, the administration put time restrictions on the fest from the next year instead of providing tight security. This raises several questions about the ability of the administration and management of Gargi College.

While Gargi College’s faculty, administration and management are well-qualified and efficient, their silence towards harassment and security breaches raised concerns. Female students diligently choose women’s colleges for the sake of safety and it is the responsibility of the management and administration to ensure the security of students at any cost. Instead of restricting fest timing, the college should have come up with better security measures. 

Gargi College is located in the capital city of India at Siri Fort Road, New Delhi. The college is situated in one of the posh areas of South Delhi well-connected via roads, railways and airways. It is about 12 km away from the New Delhi Airport and Railway Station. Green Park is the nearest metro station from where one can easily reach the campus by walking. 

Moreover, Gargi College’s prime location in south Delhi, amidst Saket, Sarojini Nagar and Lajpat Nagar, is a feast for female students. From trendy cafes to bustling markets, south Delhi provides a stimulating backdrop to college life. 

Indeed! Gargi College is one of the most sought-after women’s colleges in India. Its robust curriculum, affordable fees, experienced faculty, and ample exposure opportunities attract students from across the country. Along with that, Gargi College provides sufficient internship and placement opportunities helping students get jobs in leading MNCs.  

While the college offers holistic education and adequate career opportunities, concerns about safety and silent management remain paramount. The management has taken several measures to curb these challenges but whether those measures are enough is a big question in itself.

Some buildings are still under construction otherwise we have a awesome auditorium, lovely garden and a great ground for sports for example cricket, basketball, tennis etc The red colour buildings gives us the vibe that we are part of DU.

Our college has all the necessary infrastructure and facilities. But the facilities in the classroom could be better, there are broken windows and desks, and all classrooms don't have projectors. The network facility is really bad in the college.

Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, New Delhi, will be the best option among the Gargi, ARSD, and Khalsa College if the distance is not the parameter.

SGTB Khalsa College is the oldest college with the best infrastructure and phenomenal teaching faculty. Every facility is available in this college.

For Maths Hons, I suggest you prefer SGTB Khalsa over other colleges; else, ARSD is not a bad option.

can anyone guide me which subject to choose in final year bsc life science among public hygiene and sericulture as in which one is less hectic as I am preparing for entrance exam so pls guide which one to choose comprising of less practical/file work n less theory.
