History - construction and ownership

DCL-Disney Cruise Line is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company (shipowner). The company was incorporated in 1996 as "Magical Cruise Company Ltd". Walt Disney also owns the Bahamian private island Castaway Cay (exclusive port of call - for Disney ships only) and an exclusive Cruise Terminal at Port Canaveral (Orlando Florida) . Disney cruises are marketed as "family vacations" and feature unique and exclusive activities, such as costumed Disney Characters, adults-only deck areas, dedicated facilities for teens, kids and infants-toddlers, signature (trademarked) shipboard facilities and activities, themed live entertainment.

Decks and Cabins

Most Disney Wonder staterooms (877 total, in 22 grades) are 225-260-ft2 Balconies. The ship has 22 Suites, 362 Balcony, 235 Oceanview and 256 Inside cabins. The largest accommodations are the Royal Suites (845 ft2 / 79 m2 plus 185 ft2 / 17 m2 terrace).

All cabins boast sizes larger than the industry average, with the majority of them offering a separate bedroom and living room areas, a deep convertible sofa, a bunk bed (folding down from the ceiling, with safety rails, 2 beds convertible to a queen.

Additionally, Disney Wonder family cruise cabins for families of 5 have a Murphy bed (wall-mounted). Plenty of storage space (the suitcases store well under the bed), subtle maple furniture, a closet with a dresser, a desk/dressing table, a smart HDTV with all Disney channels, 2 portable "Wave Phones" (you can text and talk on them throughout the ship), 2 bathrooms (one with toilet-sink, one with tub-shower-sink), a hairdryer. Balcony cabins also have 2 chairs and a small table on the veranda. Standard bathroom amenities by the premium H2O Plus cosmetics (soap-shampoo-lotion, suite guests get additional offerings), Euro-top mattresses, Egyptian cotton linens, luxurious bath towels, upon request - cribs and diaper genies.

Disney Wonder suites are of 3 types (1 and 2-bedrooms), featuring dining tables, Jacuzzis, huge balconies. The Walt and Royal Suites are the Wonder ship's biggest accommodations. In addition, suite guests can enjoy a memory foam pillow, comfortable duvets, robes, and slippers, plus the main dining room's menu available as a room service option.

The boat has 11 decks , of which 6 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Disney Wonder ship dining experiences include the Disney Line's rotational dining system pertaining to the ship's 3 main restaurants (you dine each night in a different restaurant, accompanied by the same companions and waiters), with 2 dining times (6:15 and 8:15 pm, table number, and rotations are on your dining tickets). The "Animator's Palate" room features numerous special lighting effects and animations (including the menu holograms, scenes transform from B&W sketches to full-color animated images), the "Parrot Cay" is Caribbean-themed (a delicious seafood buffet and great salad choices) and the most formal of the three is the upscale "Triton's" restaurant (the last two are also open for breakfast and lunch). All main dining rooms offer free drinks during dinner, a wine purchase program.

Disney Wonder food is really wondrous - all is made on the ship, quality ingredients, beautifully prepared, with "light" choices at dinner, a separate kids menu.

"Palo" is the Wonder ship's specialty dining option - an adults-only elegant restaurant (Northern Italian (Med) cuisine), open daily for Champagne brunch and dinner (reservations are required, guests are allowed to book only 1 brunch and 1 dinner per sailing).

On Deck 9 is located the "Beach Blanket" buffet - an indoor/outdoor casual dining venue (breakfast and lunch) with salads, sandwiches, Mickey waffles, cookies, and fruits, with a made-to-order omelet station. Other excellent venues to dine casually are the "Pinocchio's Pizzeria", "Pluto's Dog House" (burgers and hot dogs, chicken tenders) and the Goofy's Galley (wrap sandwiches, a great selection of fruits, ice-cream). The Deck 9 self-serve beverage station offers free juices and sodas.

24-hour room service (Continental breakfast, soups, and salads, cheese, chicken, etc). Suite guests can order from the main restaurant's menus.

Most of the Disney Wonder kids facilities and public rooms are located on Decks 3-4-5 and are interconnected by its 3-deck high atrium, while the Wonder ship's 3 pools are on Decks 9 and 10. Four locations onboard offer Internet access: the teen-only "Vibe" club (Deck 11), the children-only "Edge" club (Deck 2), the "Promenade Lounge" (Deck 3, all ages, open 24-hours) and the adults-only "Cove Cafe" you can borrow a laptop from the cafe).

The Disney Lines Disney Wonder ship spa, sport, and fitness fun starts with Deck 9's pool area (3 age-specific swimming pools) and the 200-ft long waterslide. The "Mickey's Pool" (aft) is kids-only, with a 385 sq. foot pool extension for not yet toilet trained kids in swim diapers). The "Goofy's Pool" is for families (located in between the funnels, alongside the big LED screen), 2 adjacent Jacuzzis and the "Quiet Cove" (forward) is adults-only, with 2 large hot tubs, and a specialty coffee house). Deck 10 has a basketball court and a volleyball area. The "Aft Overlook" (Deck 7) is another "quite" place on the ship (unless when a wedding is officiated there by the captain).

Ship's promenade (Deck 4) offers a walking-jogging track and lounge chairs. The Vista Spa & Salon complex offers massages, facials and treatments, and its "Tropical Rain Forest" area has a sauna and steam rooms. The Wonder ship also features 3 new spa villas for the most expensive spa services (a spa suite with its own private veranda and a Jacuzzi). The recently expanded fitness center is well equipped (Life Fitness equipment) and also has a small room for personal training sessions.

Disney characters appearances are one of the highlights of all the best Disney Wonder cruises for kids with the ever best age-specific activities at sea. The Disney Wonder kids cruise programming and the unique Disney-themed entertainment are the main reasons for the Disney Wonder line's high popularity and loyalty passengers ratio. This dance club features video dance parties, karaoke, and dancers from the crew performing skits to certain songs. Deck 3 also has its "Cadillac Lounge" piano bar and the "Diversions - the sports bar with large comfortable chairs and huge plasma TVs. The "Overlook Cafe" is a unique Disney ship venue (located upstairs from "Cove Cafe") for adult guests to quietly enjoy all the amazing views during an Alaskan cruise.

The 3-decks high Walt Disney Theatre (capacity 977 most comfortable seats) boasts some of the best large production shows at sea, like "The Golden Mickeys" (with all the famous and infamous Disney characters) and "Toy Story The Musical". The Walt Disney ship Wonder is the company's second vessel, with sistership Disney Magic . They are each 40% smaller in size compared to the newer Disney ships ( Dream and Fantasy ). Wonder's first cruise was a Transatlantic crossing from Italy to Florida - leaving from the shipbuilding yard Marghera ( Venice ) to Port Canaveral (Orlando) with 2 stops - in the UK ( Southampton England ) and the Azores ( Ponta Delgada ). Liner's Godmother was Tinkerbell - a popular Disney character from the "Peter Pan" movie (1953).

The vessel (Fincantieri Marghera yard/hull number 5990) is powered by Wartsila-Sulzer marine diesel engines (model 16ZAV40S) with total power output 58,25 MW. The propulsion system is diesel-electric.

Wonder has Disney's signature sleek design, black hull, two matching red funnels and yellow Disney insignias. The indoor decoration is in both Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. Wonder is among industry's best family-friendly passenger ships, with numerous entertainment and dining options and regularly scheduled programs targeting not only the kids but the whole family. Families can go together to the evening stage revues, game shows or themed workshops.

On August 15, 1999, the vessel started its Caribbean cruise service with 4-night itinerary from homeport Port Canaveral (Orlando) Florida to Bahamas. The ship originally operated on 3- and 4-night Bahamas cruises, but in 2011 was relocated through Panama Canal from the Caribbean Sea to the US Pacific Coast. There, it operated on 7-day Mexico Riviera cruises leaving from Californian homeports (mainly Los Angeles , but also out of San Diego and San Francisco ) to call ports Vallarta , Cabo and Baja Ensenada .

In 2012 (April through October), MS Disney Wonder became DCL fleet's first to visit Hawaii (ports Hilo, Kahului, Honolulu). In 2012 (May through September), this was again the first Disney ship with Alaskan cruise itineraries (leaving from homeport Seattle WA ) to Ketchikan , Skagway , Juneau , and Victoria BC (Canada) .

This Walt Disney ship has as namesakes the cruise liner Wonder of the Seas ( Royal Caribbean International ) and the cruiseferry Moby Wonder ( MOBY LINES ).

The list of deck plan changes after the 2016 drydock refurbishment in Cadiz Spain (September 9 through October 23) included:

• Upper decks were redesigned, adding AquaDunk (new waterslide), AquaLab (interactive water play area with the Twist n' Spout waterslide), Dory's Reef (splash zone for toddlers).

• Tiana's Place is a new restaurant named after Princess Tiana from the Disney animation "The Princess and the Frog". The new eatery is Disney Wonder ship exclusive and features a stage for live jazz-swing-blues performances and street party style events. The themed decor includes Tiana's family photos and framed culinary awards on the walls, water lily-shaped candleholders. The menu is influenced by southern USA cuisine (Louisiana bayou).
• new Cabanas (replacing Topsider Buffet, hugely enlarged)
• new lounge (D Lounge) is dedicated to family games and themed entertainment.
• On deck 10, Palo Restaurant was renovated (new fixtures, glass artwork, stone floor, new Venetian decor).

Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab changes - now with Marvel's Avengers Academy (Marvel Super Hero Academy/the first at sea), Andy's Room (Toy Story-themed, now has the Slinky Dog slide, Mr Potato Head, Hamm the piggy bank, regular Woody and Jessie character visits, scavenger hunts), Club Disney Junior (Disney Junior characters, games, storytelling, Doc McStuffins character visits), Frozen Adventures (play and activities, via digital screen Olaf leads games and singalongs, Anna and Elsa character visits). Also changed are the interiors of the rooms Pixie Hollow and Mickey Mouse Club. The upgraded programming offers more live interactions (Disney character visits).

Disney Wonder's next drydock was at Damen Shiprepair Brest France (conducted in October 2020). The project included mainly general/routine maintenance works and minor upgrades.

The ship's last drydock was in 2023 (September 17 through October 3) conducted at Seaspan Victoria Shipyards in Victoria BC Canada . The 2-week drydocking project was mainly for regular maintenance (technical overhaul and hotel upkeep).

• [1999-2011] sailed on 3- and 4-day Bahamas cruises from Port Canaveral (Orlando) Florida
• [2011] relocated to Los Angeles CA for round-trip departures to Mexican Riviera, Baja Ensenada , and the Hawaiian Islands. During summer, Disney Wonder operates on 7-day round-trip Alaskan cruises leaving from Vancouver BC (Canada) or Seattle WA .
• In 2016, the ship was home-ported in Galveston TX (November 14 through January 20) and in 2017 relocated back to Orlando. Galveston departures offered 8-day Western and Eastern Caribbean cruises to Key WestFL, Castaway Cay, Nassau, Mexico (Cozumel, Costa Maya), Jamaica (Falmouth), Grand Cayman.

On April 30, 2017, Disney Wonder became the world's first-ever cruise vessel that passed through Panama Canal's new locks.

Disney Wonder was on a 14-night repositioning voyage from Florida to California ( Port Canaveral to San Diego ). From San Diego, the ship operated several Baja Mexico itineraries before its summer Alaskan season with departures from Vancouver BC Canada .

Disney cruises in Australia 2023-2024 (inaugural season)

In September 2022 (at D23 Expo 2022 in Anaheim CA) DCL announced its inaugural season in Australia and New Zealand (Oct 2023 thru Feb 2024).

Disney Wonder's voyages (2- to 6-night itineraries) departed from 4 homeports - 3x in Australia ( Brisbane QLD , Melbourne VIC , Sydney NSW ) and 1x in New Zealand ( Auckland NZ ).

Disney's maiden Australian voyage departed on October 28 (2023) out of Sydney Harbour.

Most departures are from Sydney (12x), followed by Melbourne (10x). The homeporting in Brisbane and Auckland was scheduled for Nov-Dec 2023.

The program also included Transpacific crossings (RepositionCruises.com) from Alaska to Australia via Hawaii (Vancouver-Hilo-Nawiliwili-Kahului-Honolulu-American Samoa-Fiji-New Caledonia-Sydney) in 2023, and on the reverse route (Australia-Hawaii-Alaska) in 2024.

Call ports included Eden (NSW AU) , Hobart (Tasmania) , and Noumea (Grande Terre/New Caledonia) visited on the longest sailings. Cruises to Nowhere (portless roundtrips) were offered as 2-night voyages from the Australian homeports as well as 3-night roundtrips from Auckland.

Bookings for Disney's Australia and New Zealand voyages opened on Sept 26, 2022.

Disney Wonder review: What to expect on the Disney Cruise Line ship with the coolest itineraries

If you like the idea of cruising with Disney Cruise Line , but you want to go beyond the Bahamas and Mexico to destinations in New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, Alaska and beyond, then Disney Wonder is likely the best Disney ship for you.

That's especially true if you want a ship with a lot to offer that's a manageable size and doesn't tempt you to spend money around every bend.

Disney Wonder is one of Disney's two smallest ships. It doesn't have amenities like a pay-per-scoop ice cream shop or fancy, adults-only infinity pool like you'll find on Disney Wish . Don't worry, though — Wonder still has all-you-can-eat, included soft serve out on the deck and is absolutely charming in its own right.

Disney Wonder was the second ship in Disney's fleet, first setting sail in 1999, one year after Disney's original ship, Disney Magic .

In many ways, it is Magic's twin; it's the same size (984 feet long) and has the same number of staterooms (875). However, Disney Wonder features certain shows and restaurants unique to the ship and has a litany of unusual sailings that are unparalleled in Disney's line-up.

I've sailed on all but one of Disney's ships (I'll get on Disney Fantasy one day). I have had the pleasure of sailing on Disney Wonder twice: once to Mexico in a concierge-level suite and more recently to Alaska on my favorite cruise yet in a standard ocean-view cabin.

Based on these experiences and my general obsession with Disney Cruise Line, here's what you need to know about Disney Wonder.

Overview of Disney Wonder

Disney Wonder can host up to 2,713 passengers spread across its 875 cabins, ranging from windowless inside rooms to multi-bedroom suites. Guests can enjoy 11 decks of fun operated by 950 crew members.

Like all of Disney's ships, Disney Wonder has a classic oceanliner vibe and coloring. Its interior is inspired by art nouveau design from the turn of the last century, unlike Disney Magic's bold art deco aesthetic. Disney Cruise Line uses design, colors and onboard fixtures from the Grand Hall's chandelier (inspired by Ariel's flower) to the carpet to tell a story, set the stage and sometimes even subtly communicate to passengers which way to go.

Disney Wonder is made for families, but it didn't forget about adults along the way. On it, you will find a waterslide; restaurants themed to "The Princess and the Frog," animation and "The Little Mermaid"; four kids clubs dedicated to different age groups (babies and toddlers, kids, tweens and teens); and adults-only spaces including a pool, multiple bars and lounges, and a high-end restaurant. (Incidentally, if you can snag a brunch reservation at that dining venue, I'd say that is the best $50 you can spend on a Disney cruise .)

Two theaters, the Walt Disney Theatre and Buena Vista Theatre, show first-run Disney movies and three Broadway-style productions on each sailing.

Disney is famous for its rotational dining, where your tablemates and servers move from restaurant to restaurant each night. On this ship, you can enjoy your included dinners at Tiana's Place, Tritons and Animator's Palate.

Disney Wonder is a classicly Disney ship that doesn't have the interactive virtual-realty-inspired games or paintings and chandeliers that come to life as you might find on some of the newer ships. But it has the pools, shows, kid clubs, games and itineraries to set the stage for a magical vacation.

What I loved about Disney Wonder

Ports of call.

Disney Wonder's biggest claim to fame is where it sails. While my first sailing on the ship was one born of convenience since it was out of my home port of Galveston, it's since moved on. As Disney Wish joined the fleet in 2022 — and with Disney Treasure to follow in 2024 — Disney Cruise Line got to shake up where it sails. Disney Wonder won the port-of-call lottery, so to speak, when it landed some interesting new sailings.

I adored our Alaska sailing out of Vancouver , bringing us to glaciers as well as cities such as Ketchikan, Skagway and Juneau. But if spending the day with Mickey and Minnie in their warmest outfits isn't on your bucket list (and it really should be), the ship also sails to places such as the Mexican Riviera, Sydney, New Zealand, Fiji and Pago Pago in American Samoa.

Tiana's Place

One of the best restaurants in all of the Disney Cruise Line fleet is found only on Disney Wonder. Not only does Tiana's Place have great Cajun specialties (beignets, anyone?), but it's a fantastically fun party from appetizer to dessert. You'll only find Tiana's Place on Disney Wonder, so if you'd love to enjoy shrimp and grits with Tiana herself, this is your chance.

The Disney Cruise Line crew members are always great, but they have the opportunity to be even greater on Disney Wonder. Thanks to a schedule of longer sailings, the crew can get to know the guests on board over the course of a week rather than meeting a new set of passengers every three or four days.

For example, the restaurant servers knew what our kids wanted to drink by the second or third meal. The room hosts learned who our friends were on board and would let us know where our teens were hanging out when they noticed us looking around.

Great entertainment

There's always something fun to do on Disney Wonder, from the game shows to on-deck performances and the three evening Broadway-style shows, including "The Golden Mickeys," "Frozen: A Musical Spectacular" and "Disney Dreams" (which is guaranteed to make your eyes water a bit on your last night).

These aren't just shows that help you pass some hours in the evening; some of them — especially Frozen — are at the level you would pay to see on Broadway. It's also really fun at night to pop into the theater and see a new Disney movie that is still playing on land without worrying about the costs of tickets or pre-reserving good seats.

What I didn't love about Disney Wonder

It's not the latest and greatest.

While Disney Wonder is in great shape and gets upgrades on a regular basis, its bones are 25 years old. Some of the styling — while classic — feels dated compared to Disney's newer ships, like Disney Wish. My family also missed the fun tech-enabled interactive elements they'd enjoyed on the line's newer ships because it gave them something to do between scheduled activities.

The food is good — but not the best in the fleet

I enjoy the food on all Disney Cruise Line ships, but Disney Wonder is a step or two behind the new Disney Wish when it comes to dining. This is especially true in the grab-and-go department. The on-deck food on Wonder leans heavily into comfort food (pizza, burgers and chicken fingers). Although you can find other options if you look carefully, I missed the variety of Disney Wish with its taco bar and BBQ.

Disney Wonder needs a new bar

Not to overplay the comparison between one of Disney's oldest ships and its newest, but you really see the difference in design from the '90s versus today with the onboard bars. On Wish, they are spread throughout the ship, and you can find bright, airy spots to have a cocktail. On Disney Wonder, the bars are concentrated in one area, and all of them are dark and feel like tucked-away pubs. They could use a modern-day glow-up and more views of the sea.

Disney Wonder cabins and suites

Disney Wonder has multiple room types: windowless inside cabins (starting at 184 square feet), ocean-view cabins (starting at 214 square feet), verandah rooms with private balconies (starting at 268 square feet) and concierge-level suites that go all the way up to 1,000-square-foot, two-bedroom suites that sleep up to seven guests.

We've had a chance to check out a few of those room types.

Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom

Most recently, we sailed to Alaska in a Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom that slept up to four guests with a queen bed, single convertible sofa and a pull-down upper berth. It's a comfortable room type for a family of three or a younger family of four.

Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

This room type is similar to the ocean-view room type, with the difference being the verandah rather than a porthole window. If you will use the private balcony, it can be worth buying up to this room type, as my parents did on our recent Alaska cruise. The cost to go from an ocean-view category to this one can be a few hundred dollars on some sailings or thousands more, as it did on our Alaska sailing.

This room type, like most on Disney Cruise Line, has a split bathroom design. There's a sink and shower in one small bathroom, and a sink and toilet in another. This arrangement allows more guests to get ready at the same time.

One-bedroom concierge suite

On a 2020 sailing, I had the chance to stay in a one-bedroom concierge suite, which measured 614 square feet and had a true living room area, along with a bedroom. The layout features a small dining nook, a living area with the double convertible sofa, a true separate bedroom with a queen-size bed and two bathrooms.

This was an indulgent way to sail with my mom, where we could all have our own space. The suite comes with concierge service, which takes things to the next level in terms of perks.

Those in concierge-level accommodations get access to the Concierge Lounge, found midship on Disney Wonder's Deck 10. You don't need concierge access to have a great time on Disney Wonder, but if you can afford it, it sure is amazing.

When we sailed in a suite, we made the most of the lounge with its small food plates set out throughout the day, the included evening happy hour starting at 5 p.m. daily and the fully stocked fridge to grab bottled water and canned drinks to enjoy around the ship and on excursions.

Disney Wonder restaurants and bars

Disney Cruise Line pioneered what it calls "rotational dining." You get a schedule for your cruise, and you rotate through each of the included onboard restaurants, swapping each night. Your serving crew rotates with you, so you always have the same waiters even in different dining venues.

At all of Disney Wonder's rotational restaurants, you can order as much as you want and sample your way around the menu. Want three appetizers? Go for it. Want two lobster tails? They're yours. Want something like chicken fingers that you don't see on the menu? Just ask, and the waiters will deliver if possible.

If you are a true foodie, you won't be overly impressed by the included food on Disney Wonder, but most cruisers will be excited about something on each menu. We certainly enjoy trying various options — especially the seafood — without worrying about the cost.

Animator's Palate

One of Disney Wonder's three included-in-your-fare rotational dining venues is Animator's Palate, a staple on multiple Disney ships. Tucked away on Deck 4, this restaurant has a few different interactive shows and animation offerings on longer sailings — I won't spoil it. The physical restaurant will also come to life over the course of your meal, starting in black and white and ending up in color.

Don't miss the special guest who shows up at the end of your meal at least one of the nights.

While I'm not a huge fan of this dish, a popular item on the menu is the black truffle pasta purseittes.

Previously mentioned as one of my favorite parts of the ship, Tiana's Place on Deck 3 is always a good time. On longer sailings, the entertainment in this restaurant will include jazz performers on one night and a full-on, second-line parade around the room with Tiana herself on another.

I'm a big fan of the shrimp and grits — or anything Cajun-themed — and definitely don't miss the beignets for dessert.

Triton's

Off the main atrium on Deck 3, Triton's is the most formal of the three included restaurants on Disney Wonder.

It's themed loosely on "The Little Mermaid," but not in a way your kids will likely notice. If you are looking for dinner to be an experience and want to know which restaurant to skip, I'd recommend this one. It's more traditional than the other venues in the rotation.

On-deck food

Whether you want a quick lunch or are in the mood for a more casual dinner, eating out on Deck 9 is a viable option on Disney Wonder. On-deck eateries include:

• Daisy's De Lites: Salads, sandwiches, fruit and customizable rice bowls (the latter are one of my favorite options on Disney Wonder)
• Sulley's Sips: For-purchase beverages and smoothies as well as free soft-service ice cream
• Pinocchio's Pizzeria: Pizza by the slice with various toppings, available for long hours each day
• Pete's Boiler Bites: Burgers, veggie burgers, chicken fingers, fries, and often-overlooked gyros and hummus

Cabanas buffet

If you're looking for a classic cruise ship buffet meal, head to Cabanas. Currently open for breakfast and lunch on Disney Wonder, Cabanas is a traditional self-serve buffet. It's impossible to go hungry when you make a plate here because the venue offers everything from Mickey waffles (keep an eye out for the mornings that they have churro Mickey waffles) to chilled shrimp and crab legs.

No reservations are required; you can walk in any time during open hours. Some dishes change daily, while others are consistent throughout the cruise. My top recommendation is to start at the back of the line, where you'll find most of the seafood, so you don't fill up too much on the carb-loaded treats at the beginning of the line.

Palo adults-only restaurant

The only place to have brunch or dinner on the ship without the kids is at Palo. The adults-only restaurant is reserved for the 18-and-up crowd.

The dress code here is a bit nicer than in other onboard restaurants. T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire are not permitted. You don't need to go super formal; a dress or a nice shirt with pants or jeans is perfect for dinner.

Unless you have Disney Cruise Line Castaway Club Platinum status or higher, dining at Palo will cost you a bit, but I'd argue it's worth it. In fact, I've said it's the best $50 you can spend at sea .

Brunch at Palo is a set price of $50 for all you care to eat from the menu, served on plates instead of via a buffet. For dinner, you can select the $50 prix fixe menu, with a choice of dishes for each course, or you can order a la carte from options such as baby arugula salad ($7), prosciutto and burrata pizza ($16) and jumbo scallops ($32). No matter what you get, save room for the chocolate souffle ($10) for dessert.

Palo is not part of your rotational dining plan, so you'll need to make advance reservations online or via the Disney Cruise Line app. Booking windows will vary based on your room selection and Castaway Club status, but they will typically open a few months before your sailing.

Bars and lounges

On Disney Wonder, the bars are mainly in the adult area on Deck 3 forward. Though the spaces might be used for general activities during the day, the area transforms each evening into a space just for the over-18 crowd.

The lounges here include:

• Crown & Fin Pub: British-themed pub with beer on tap, sports games on the TVs and small bites in a little buffet offering in the evening
• Cadillac Lounge: Decor inspired by late-1950s Hollywood with live piano some nights
• Azure: Nightclub with a bar where you'll find different evening acts and dancing
• French Quarter Lounge: New Orleans-themed spot where you'll find beignets (for purchase) and cocktails, along with family-friendly activities during the day.

Pro tip: There are usually happy hours somewhere on the ship each day; check the onboard app for details. If you want to save a few dollars on your glass of wine — and like to be surprised — you can also save by having a sommelier's choice glass of wine at some of the bars; you get a nicer glass of wine for a lower price if you let the bartender choose the vintage.

Coffee drinkers can find the basic beverage in Cabanas via room service or at the self-service drink station just outside of Cabanas on the top deck. If you prefer something fancier — such as a cold brew, salted caramel coconut latte or espresso — you'll need to pony up a few dollars at the Cove Cafe. Expect to pay around $6 or $7 for coffee drinks — or more if you go for the cocktails on the menu. The muffins and pastries are free of charge.

Pro tip: Get the Coffee Fanatics punch card if you plan to purchase multiple coffee-based drinks on your cruise. With the card, you get your sixth drink free after you purchase five coffee drinks.

Disney Wonder activities

Pools and water play areas.

Disney Wonder has a few different pool areas. The main Goofy's Pool and two adjacent family-friendly whirlpools are on Deck 9 midship. Only guests ages 3 years old and up (and potty-trained) can use this pool.

Aft of Goofy's Pool is the Aqua Lab area. Here, you'll find a small, shallow pool for kids ages 3 and up; a splash pad meant for cruisers under age 3 in swim diapers; and a twisting waterslide made for those 38 inches and taller. This slide is a one-at-a-time slide and does not utilize inner tubes.

Forward of Goofy's Pool is the Quiet Cove Pool and two whirlpools, all for the exclusive use of adults only.

Pools are heated, and the hours vary, so check your Disney Cruise Line app once on board.

If your young child doesn't meet the age minimum for the older kids clubs, there is a nursery for those ages six months to three years. Unlike with the other kid clubs, reservations are required for the nursery, and you'll need to pay an hourly fee.

The kids clubs are one of the best parts of a Disney cruise. They are so good that most kids want to visit them frequently, which means parents get a chance to be on vacation, too.

The main and largest kids clubs on Disney Wonder are the Oceaneer Club and Lab, open to guests ages 3 to 12 years old (and toilet trained). These two clubs have separate entrances on Deck 5, but they are connected via a "secret" hallway just for the kids who are checked in.

The clubs' schedules offer a mix of activities, games and free play that take place in themed areas, including:

• Andy's Room, where there's even a Slinky Dog-themed slide
• Marvel Super Hero Academy
• Disney Junior
• Frozen Adventures

These kid clubs are free, and reservations are not required. Check the operating hours in your app once on board, but the clubs are often open until midnight.

Disney knows that little kids and big kids don't mix, so it also has separate hangouts for tweens and teens. Edge is the tween club for guests ages 11 to 14. Found on Deck 9, the club is themed as an under-the-sea submarine. Tweens can come here to draw, play video games or hang out, but supervising youth counselors also lead group activities, such as scavenger hunts, dance parties, bingo and more.

Unlike the Oceaneer Club, where there is a formal check-in and checkout procedure, the tween club allows kids to come and go. If you don't want to give your 11- or 12-year-old that independence, then the Oceaneer Club and Lab are better suited for them than Edge.

On the flip side, if space is available, you can sign a waiver for your 10-year-old to level up into Edge a year early if you think they are ready. This is most useful when sailing with older friends or family members already in Edge.

Teens ages 14 to 17 have a space all their own in Vibe. On Disney Wonder, you can find Vibe tucked away in the funnel on Deck 11. Its cool spot gives it an exclusive vibe, befitting its name.

Like in Edge, teens can hang out and play arcade games, video games, draw or chat with the counselors and other teen visitors. If space permits, parents can sign a form to allow their 13-year-old to hang out at Edge one year early.

Bibbity Bobbity Boutique

If your kid has always wanted to be a princess, Bibbity Bobbity Boutique is an awesome (albeit expensive) Disney Wonder experience. It's a salon for kids where fairy godmothers (aka stylists who work there) will transform them into their favorite princess or prince, Captain Mickey or another whimsical character. The character might depend on the costumes available on your sailing.

Depending on the package you book, your kid will choose an outfit before getting a makeover involving a glitter-infused hairstyle, painted nails and fancy make-up. The fairy godmothers do a great job at making their princesses-in-training feel extremely special.

You need to make advance appointments for Bibbity Bobbity, and prices range from $100 to $200, depending on the package you select. (Fair warning: The $100 package doesn't include the outfit or backpack, so BYO if you go that route.)

Activities and shows

From the Sail Away party on deck the first afternoon to the See Ya Real Soon final farewell in the main atrium on the last night, there will be more shows and activities to see and experience on Disney Wonder than you'd ever be able to do in just one trip. (But seriously, don't miss the first and last shows; they are fantastic.)

In your Disney Cruise Line app, you'll find the time for all these shows and activities, such as trivia, bingo and karaoke. All the shows and most activities are free, but there are a few exceptions, such as bingo, that cost if you want to play. While it might feel weird at first doing a family game show or playing trivia, the more activities you participate in, the more fun you have.

On-deck fun

For independent fun, head up to the Wide World of Sports area on Deck 10 forward. There, you'll find a netted area for basketball, ping pong and foosball. Down on Deck 4, the promenade features a walking or running track that goes all the way around the ship. You'll find shuffleboard courts there, as well.

Character encounters

Sailing with Disney isn't complete without meeting some of your favorite pals on the ship.

Guests have a few ways to visit characters on Disney Wonder. Scheduled character meet-and-greets are listed on the itinerary each day in the Disney Cruise Line app. These will be popular events.

For example, if you are on Disney Wonder as it sails to Alaska , the first day that Mickey, Minnie and friends appear in their Alaska-exclusive outfits out on deck (which is also likely the day you sail close to a glacier), lines will form at least 30 minutes before the greetings start.

However, some of the best character interactions will be the ones that aren't announced or planned. You may see a character on the promenade waving goodbye to land as you sail away from a port or "sleep-walking" in their pajamas at night when no one else is around.

Definitely go to some of the scheduled character interactions if you want to get a photo, but keep your eyes peeled for those unannounced moments, too.

Senses Spa and Rainforest Room

On Deck 9 forward, you'll find the Senses Spa — home to treatment rooms, a nail and hair salon, a fitness center, locker rooms and the Rainforest Room thermal suite.

You can book spa treatments before the sailing and once on board. Look for discounts on booking treatments on port days, and if you book multiple treatments, you can often also qualify for a discount.

The adults-only Rainforest Room features heated stone chairs, various shower experiences and steam rooms. Access to this room costs extra, so visit the spa on the day you board for prices and availability. If you've been to the Rainforest Room on Disney Wish , Dream or Fantasy, know Disney Wonder's version is smaller. It does not include any whirlpools or some of the other offerings you'll find in the larger thermal suites.

Disney Wonder nighttime shows and movies

Each Disney ship has a lineup of Broadway-caliber nighttime shows and a schedule of movies in the Walt Disney and Buena Vista theaters.

Currently, the flagship evening performances on Disney Wonder sailings are:

• "The Golden Mickeys"
• "Frozen: A Musical Spectacular"
• "Disney Dreams — An Enchanted Classic"

Seating is first-come, first-served, so get to the theater early for your pick of seats. Your time to see the evening show will be opposite your dinner time, so early dinner means seeing the late show, and late dinner means seeing the early performance.

In addition to the Broadway-style shows, Disney Wonder has a schedule of first-run and recent Disney movies that you can pop in and watch inside the Buena Vista Theater on Deck 5. If you are on the ship while a Disney show premiers on land, you can catch its opening night on the ship, too.

Disney Wonder itineraries and pricing

As we've mentioned before, Disney Wonder hit the lottery of itineraries.

While every year is a bit different, for at least the next year or two, Disney Wonder's schedule includes summer sailings from Vancouver to Alaska, an October trip to Hawaii after the Alaska season, then fall and winter sailings to, from and around Australia and New Zealand. There's a spring stop in Hawaii, followed by sailings from San Diego to Mexico before it resumes its summer season beginning in May in Vancouver.

Pricing starts less than $2,000 for a family of four on some of the short Australia and New Zealand sailings. Sailings on the U.S. West Coast start around $3,000 for a family of four in an inside cabin.

To do a weeklong Alaska sailing with a family of four, prices will start at $5,100 for an inside cabin in the early or late season. Prime summer sailing dates from June to August cost a couple of thousand dollars more for that same interior cabin and thousands more still for a balcony cabin.

What to know before you go

Required documents.

The required documents for sailing on Disney Wonder vary based on your itinerary.

All guests 16 and over who are U.S. citizens on the sailing from Vancouver to Alaska will need a U.S. passport, but children ages 15 and under can do that sailing with a state-issued birth certificate. Americans flying to Canada from the U.S. (or vice versa) will need a passport to enter the country by air, regardless of age.

U.S. citizens on round-trip sailings from the U.S. West Coast to Mexico can do the sailing with a passport or a state-issued birth certificate and a physical government-issued photo ID.

Those on the sailings to and from Australia and New Zealand will need different documents based on their nationality, but those from the U.S. will need passports and potentially visas, too.

Green-card holders and non-U.S. citizens must check requirements based on destinations visited. Additionally, you will need to check in for your cruise online, fill out the appropriate information and select an arrival time for your embarkation day.

Disney Cruise Line recommends $14.50 in gratuities per guest per night; this is the amount auto-applied to your onboard bill unless you request to increase or decrease it. The gratuities are split among your dining room server, assistant server, head server and cabin host.

Those in the concierge level are charged $15.50 per person per night, with the additional going to the cabin assistant host, who helps with those accommodations. Tips for the concierge lounge team are neither included in that amount nor automatically added to your onboard statement. Disney recommends you tip $8 per person per night; you can do this in cash or ask to have it added to your folio toward the end of your cruise. The tips would then be shared among the concierge hosts.

I recommend bringing cash and tipping not only the concierge hosts but also the bartenders in the concierge lounge, assuming you get your drinks there.

For a seven-night sailing for a family of four, automatically charged gratuities come to $406 in a non-concierge cabin and $434 in a concierge cabin, plus an additional $224 in recommended tips to the concierge lounge attendants. In other words, don't forget to budget for this. You can also leave additional amounts charged to your room or in cash.

Also not included in the amounts above are tips at the bar, at the adults-only dining restaurants, at the spa and for room service; tipping is recommended for those services. Note that an 18% gratuity is automatically added to bar, beverage, wine, deck service tabs and spa services.

Wi-Fi is not currently a strength of Disney Wonder. It is quite expensive and priced in an old-school manner.

There is no cost to connect to the ship's Wi-Fi network when used only for the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app (which can also be used for messaging other guests on the ship). Otherwise, Disney Wonder's current Wi-Fi options start at $19 for a 100 MB package and go up from there. At some point, the ship will likely switch to the program most other Disney ships use, which charges by the day and not by the amount of data.

Carry-on drinks policy

Guests 21 years and older (18 or under for round-trip Australia and New Zealand cruises) may bring a maximum of two bottles of unopened wine or Champagne (no larger than 750 ml) or six beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board at the beginning of the voyage and at each port of call. These beverages must be packed in carry-on (not checked) bags or luggage. You can keep drinks chilled in the small fridge in your cabin.

Guests wishing to consume wine or Champagne brought on board in one of the dining rooms will be charged a corkage fee of $26 per bottle.

Smoking policy

Smoking is permitted only in designated deck areas. It's forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies, and those who violate this rule will face a $250 cleaning fee.

For an additional fee, Disney ships offer full-service laundry and dry cleaning services that include the pickup and delivery of clean clothes to your cabin.

On Disney Wonder, you'll also find self-service laundry on Decks 2, 6 and 7 midship. You pay for the facilities by using your Key to the World card. These services can get busy during sea days on longer cruises, so plan accordingly.

Electrical outlets

Cabins are equipped with multiple 110-volt outlets, which are standard in the U.S. and Canada.

Small electrical appliances such as electric shavers, curling irons and flat irons with standard North American plugs will function on board; 110-volt items should not exceed 1,500 watts, and 220-volt items should not exceed 2,000 watts. A hair dryer is provided in every cabin, but you may bring your own as long as it meets the guidelines above.

The currency on Disney Wonder, regardless of location, is the U.S. dollar.

On the ship, you don't need cash or a credit card — all incidentals, purchases and services will be charged to your cabin folio. Your Key to the World card serves as your onboard payment method. The only exception is if you want to tip a crew member in cash.

In port, you may wish to carry cash in a local currency or a credit card to buy snacks and souvenirs or to tip your tour guide.

Drinking age

The drinking age on Disney Wonder depends on where the ship is sailing at the time. For sailings to and from the U.S. West Coast and Canada, the drinking age is 21.

However, for round-trip cruises from Auckland or Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Australia, guests 18 years and older may purchase and consume alcohol. For repositioning cruises between Hawaii and Australia, parents or guardians may sign a "Beverage Consent Form" that allows their 18- to 20-year-old children to consume alcoholic beverages while in the adult's presence.

During the day on Disney Wonder, people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination, most passengers will wear T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside). For Alaska cruises, guests should wear layers and bring jackets, hats and rain gear for cooler or wetter days.

During the evenings, dining attire in the three main restaurants is "cruise casual," meaning no swimwear or tank tops, but you don't need to dress up too much. The exception is if you are dining in Palo, where you do need to dress up a bit more.

Cruises that are seven nights or longer schedule one "formal night." Passengers can choose to wear a fancy dress, suit or sports coat, but it's not a problem if you prefer casual attire. You will see folks in jeans and shorts on formal nights alongside passengers in dresses and suits. For the kids, princess dresses and other Disney-themed costumes are always appropriate.

Pro tip: Be sure and pack that pirate gear or themed attire for Pirate Night or Frozen Night on the Alaska cruises.

Bottom line

Disney Wonder has been the setting for family vacations for about 25 years, and it doesn't show any signs of hanging up its waterslide anytime soon.

It's not the newest, flashiest or most modern ship in Disney's fleet, but it makes us smile every time we step on board. There's more than enough to do to stay busy on your sailing, and it's still a compact enough ship that you don't spend half your cruise figuring out where everything is.

In other words, Disney Wonder is a great choice whether you want to start your cruising with a ship that is a bit smaller or you are ready to chart an adventure to one of Disney's most far-flung ports of call.

Disney Wonder Ship Overview

The Disney Wonder is part of the original set of two ships that Disney Cruise Line built in the late 1990s. With a focus on family-friendly entertainment rather than belly flop contests and onboard casinos , Disney Cruise Line set a new standard that some other cruise lines are still trying to catch up to a quarter-century later. Despite the ship’s age, Disney Wonder continues to receive regular updates and improvements, including an extensive dry dock refurbishment in 2016.

The ship boasts a streamlined look that reminds passengers of the grand early oceanliners — but with a classic black, yellow, red, and white color scheme that immediately suggests the iconic Mickey Mouse. An image of Mickey as Steamboat Willie adorns the bow of the ship.

In back, you’ll see Donald hanging on makeshift scaffolding and trying to paint the ship’s logo on the stern. It’s going about as well as you’d expect.

How Does Disney Wonder Compare to Other Disney Cruise Ships?

The Disney Wonder is a sister ship to the Disney Magic ; the two ships are generally the same in terms of construction (though similar areas on each ship are themed differently from one another). As the original ships in the fleet, they also happen to be the smallest.

There are more new Disney Cruise ships being built , but all of them will be larger than the Disney Wonder.

One notable difference is that the Disney Wonder is the only current Disney Cruise ship which doesn’t have its own water “ride” (such as the AquaDunk, AquaDuck, or AquaMouse found on other ships). But there are still pools and a standard waterslide onboard.

Should I Pick the Disney Wonder Instead of a Larger Ship?

It’s really a matter of personal preference, but my wife and I prefer smaller ships such as the Disney Wonder because they’re just easier to get around while onboard. Remember — you’re walking to everything on the ship, and on the Wonder there’s never more than a 5-10 minute walk from your stateroom to the restaurants, theatres, and pools.

Compare that to a larger ship such as the Disney Dream, where you’ll likely need a bit more time to walk from one part of the ship to the other. And since the larger ships have more decks than the smaller ones, you might find yourself spending more time waiting on elevators as opposed to just using the staircases for a quick jaunt.

This smaller ship is also able to visit ports that are inaccessible to larger ships; that means it’s able to do things the bigger ships can’t, such as sailing right through a narrow Alaskan fjord and getting tantalizingly close to a giant glacier!

At the moment, the Wonder is the only Disney ship offering certain itineraries  such as Alaska or Hawaii; that alone could make your choice for you if you have a particular destination in mind.

Otherwise, if this will be your first time taking a Disney Cruise , a smaller ship like the Wonder might be a better bet versus a larger ship like the Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy , or Disney Wish . It’ll let you “ease into” cruising with Disney without getting completely overwhelmed.

But don’t fret too much over the choice; whatever you pick, you’re going to have a great time. Most of the Disney ships still have relatively equal offerings despite size differences. As an example, the Wonder (smaller) and Fantasy (larger) both have a number of main restaurants plus adult-exclusive dining, a night club district, kids clubs, a spa, and live shows — but there are some differences in size, layout, and theming. The larger ships might have more of each, but the overall experience is very similar.

Disney Wonder Staterooms

Your stateroom (passenger cabin) is your hotel room onboard the Disney Wonder. It’s where you’ll sleep and spend most of your private time, so picking the right room is important. The type of room you choose is also one of the biggest factors in the price of a Disney cruise , because the per-person cost can increase based on the category picked.

The Disney Wonder has 875 passenger staterooms, and most of them offer some type of outside view (via either a verandah balcony or porthole windows). There are four main types of rooms on the ship; each of those four types is then further divided into multiple categories and subcategories.

Here is a brief look at the types of rooms you can choose from. We’ve listed them here generally from cheapest to most expensive, though there may be some price overlap. Inside Staterooms on Disney Wonder

Inside Staterooms are just that — completely inside. They have no porthole window and no balcony. On the Disney Wonder, you’ll find a round mirror that sort of looks like a porthole, but it only offers views of yourself staring back.

This stateroom type has standard and deluxe variations. The standard is the smallest onboard (but still larger than on some other cruise lines) and has a single bathroom; the deluxe is slightly larger and has a split bathroom (toilet/sink in a separate room from the shower/sink).

Disney Wonder Dining and Lounges

The dining experience on the Disney Wonder includes three delightful main restaurants, an adult-exclusive dining location, several quick-service options, and even free room service! Here’s everything you need to know about dining onboard the Disney Wonder.

Rotational Dining Restaurants on Disney Wonder

The heart of the Disney Cruise Line dining experience is its nightly dinner service. And on the Disney Wonder (like all Disney Cruise Ships), dinner is scheduled through something called rotational dining . You’re pre-scheduled to visit a different restaurant each night — no need to make a reservation ahead of time — but you’ll still have the same servers each night.

Your cruise fare includes dinner at these three restaurants at no additional charge.

• Animator’s Palate

Animator’s Palate is one of the most popular dining experiences throughout the Disney Cruise fleet, and the Disney Wonder is no exception. Repeat cruisers love its menu, and its whimsical and lively atmosphere is pure Disney.

Popular menu items here include one of my favorites, the black truffle pasta purseittes (I sometimes ask for a double helping — you can do that at no additional charge!). My wife enjoys their butternut squash soup. Other offerings include wild mushroom risotto, a polenta cake with tomato and mushrooms, beef tenderloin, and a lemon-thyme marinated chicken. There are plenty of other options, too, most inspired by the cuisines of California, Asia, and the Pacific.

As good as the food is, the real highlight of dinner here is a tribute to the art of animation. A finale show called Drawn to Magic tells the story of how an animated feature goes from early sketches to a full-fledged film. The dining room itself — and your servers — even take on a bit more color during the dinner service, which includes a special visit from Sorcerer Mickey.

On longer cruises, you might also experience Animation Magic , a different show which allows you to draw your own character and see it animated on the screens during the show! You’ll start by drawing your character on a special paper placemat which is whisked away before service begins; then later in the evening, Sorcerer Mickey does his stuff and your drawing leaps off the page and into motion!

Clearly I won’t be winning any awards, but it was still fun to see my name in the credits at the end of the show.

Triton’s is located immediately off the main atrium lobby of the ship, just behind the statue of Ariel. As you’d expect, the restaurant is themed to The Little Mermaid , though elegantly so.

For those feeling a bit adventurous, try the escargot. It doesn’t cost anything extra so you’re not out any money if you hate it — and you might be as surprised as I was to learn that you love it and want to order it on every cruise! If you’d rather stick with Les Poissons , there’s an oven-baked salmon. You might also find chilled jumbo shrimp, a crispy roasted duck breast, and other tempting entrees on the menu. Finish your meal with a dessert of the ever-popular Grand Marnier soufflé or the Instagram-worthy (though admittedly a bit underwhelming taste-wise) Apple Tarte Tatin.

Outside of dinner service, Triton’s is also the non-buffet option for breakfast (French Toast, omelets, crepes) and lunch (whitefish, pork ribs, chicken breast) on most days.

• Tiana’s Place

She’s no longer just almost there — she’s made it! This lively restaurant celebrates Tiana’s journey to becoming a restaurant owner with New Orleans décor and great live jazz music and storytelling. While it’s not quite a full-fledged character dining experience , you’ll still have a chance to see Tiana and possibly say hi to her on the way in. And don’t be surprised if you see a certain musical gator galivanting about!

The menu is a tribute to southern cuisine and the flavor of Louisiana. Try the New Orleans seafood pepper pot, shrimp jambalaya, and Cajun-spiced sea bass — or steer your way toward milder fare. Dessert includes Tiana’s famous beignets and a chocolate bread pudding.

Adult-Exclusive Dining on the Disney Wonder

The Adult-Exclusive offerings onboard Disney Wonder include a famed Italian restaurant that many repeat cruisers swear by.

Palo is the perfect spot for a memorable meal featuring fine Italian food. Giant windows allow you to gaze at the moonlight reflecting on the ocean surface as your tastebuds are tempted by the restaurant’s bill of fare.

Dinner menu items at this specialty dining location include dover sole (fileted tableside), butternut agnolotti, and seared sea scallops. The restaurant’s signature chocolate soufflé is a popular finish to your meal.

A tremendously-popular brunch service is also typically offered on Sea Days, but it can be tough to snag reservations. Try to book book as early as your onboard booking window allows .

Dining at Palo requires an upcharge, around $45 as of June 2023. Adding a wine pairing costs a bit more.

Casual Dining on the Disney Wonder

Breakfast and lunch onboard your Disney cruise ship is usually a casual affair – and there are even low-key options for dinner.

Cabanas is the buffet-style restaurant onboard the Disney Wonder, which offers an eclectic menu featuring great tastes from around the globe.

At breakfast, you’ll be able to pick your favorites from nearly a dozen different food stations. There are plenty of ready-made options such as Mickey Waffles, eggs, sausage, and bacon; you can also opt to spend a few minutes to allow the professional Omeleteer to whip up a custom omelet just for you, filled with the ingredients you selectr.

Thanks to the cruise line’s international clientele, you’ll also find some breakfast offerings not typically found here in the states — rice, miso soup, smoked fish, and such. For me, this is a fun way to step out of my eggs-and-bacon comfort zone and start my day with something I can’t easily find stateside such as a bowl of muesli (“fresh” granola) topped with fruits, nuts, and grains.

Lunch at Cabanas is an ever-changing mix of menu-items. Typical choices include: a wide array of freshly-grilled meats; a carving station featuring selections such as prime rib, roast beef, or ham; jumbo iced shrimp and crab claws; sandwiches and wraps; pizza; and plenty of desserts such as cakes, pie, cheesecake, and hand-dipped ice cream.

Cabanas is also open for dinner, offering an alternative for those who want to skip their assigned rotational dining for the evening. Dinner is table service — not buffet-style — with a somewhat limited menu of items such as salmon, chicken, steak, and the like.

Lounges, Bars, and Snacks on the Disney Wonder

There’s always a place to grab a quick bite to eat or a refreshing drink onboard Disney Wonder. Here are just a few highlights:

Dance the night away at Azure, the Disney Wonder’s liveliest night club in the heart of the After Hours district onboard. Earlier in the day, all are welcome to enjoy family-friendly activities. In the evening, it’s adults-only featuring specialty cocktails and an energetic nightlife.

• Beverage Station

Most non-alcoholic drinks are included in the cost of your cruise, so there’s no need to purchase a drink package if you just want a soda, tea, coffee, milk, or water. This soda station near the pool offers unlimited free self-serve drinks all day long.

• Cadillac Lounge

Classic Hollywood, classic cars, and live piano combine to bring back the 50s in this moody hideaway. You can practically hear Frankie and Dino warming up.

This adults-only lounge serves specialty coffees and teas by day. At night, enjoy cocktails, wine, and a light nosh.

• Crown & Fin Pub

Settle into this traditional English public house for a lively evening of drink and fun. Catch the latest sports via live TV (when available) while quaffing your choice of more than a dozen beer choices (including some British favorites) or other specialty beverages.

D Lounge is a family-friendly venue that hosts interactive entertainment for everyone. Play trivia here, sing Karaoke, or enjoy a live game show.

Daisy’s De-Lites, Pete’s Boiler Bites, and Pinocchio’s Pizzeria

These poolside quick service windows offer grab-&-go goodies. Pizza, hamburgers & hot dogs, tacos, sandwiches, chicken tenders, and other quick bites are on the menu here.

• Eye Scream Treats

Cool down with all-you-can eat soft-serve ice cream from this popular location. I personally can rarely pass by here without grabbing a cone, no matter how full I am.

• French Quarter Lounge

Not far from Tiana’s Place is French Quarter Lounge, a unique location with décor that includes a New Orleans street car. A gazebo stage and wrought-iron accents combine with hot music and hot beignets to complete the Louisiana theme. Kids are welcome earlier in the day to enjoy family-friendly games and character visits.

Room Service on the Disney Wonder Cruise Ship

Many passengers are surprised to learn that Room Service is included in the cost of your Disney Cruise.

The standard Room Service menu on the Disney Wonder includes selections such as soups & salads, hamburgers & sandwiches, flatbreads, pasta, and chicken tenders. You can also select from a few desserts, such as the cake-of-the-day and the ever-popular Mickey’s Premium Ice Cream bar.

I usually get an order of hot wings, though the journey they take from the galley to my room sometimes leaves them a bit less crispy than I’d like. I’m also fond of the All Hands on Deck , a plate of assorted cheese, fruit, and crackers that makes an enjoyable snack while sitting on my verandah watching the ocean roll by.

While all of the above is included at no additional cost, you will have to pay extra for specialty items such as beer, wine, canned soft drinks, deluxe coffees, juices, and pre-packaged snacks/candies.

Also don’t forget to tip the crew member who delivers the food to your room.

Best Bets for Each Meal on Disney Wonder

Below we list each of the main meal periods onboard the ship, and your best options for each.

• Primary option: Cabanas is the best breakfast spot onboard thanks to its long hours, wide selection of food, and all-you-care-to-eat atmosphere. It’s not a quiet meal by any stretch, but given that almost everything is hot and ready on the buffet, you can quickly eat here and move on to a quiet lounge chair in no time flat.
• Secondary option: One of the three rotational restaurants (typically Triton’s) usually offers a table-service breakfast most days, complete with a server who will bring your food and keep your drinks topped off. Although Cabanas will have a wider variety to choose from, dining here instead allows for a much more relaxed start to your day.
• Other options: Room Service has a breakfast option, but you’ll need to pre-order it the night before and choose from an extremely limited menu. The offerings are more along the lines of a continental breakfast (juices, coffees, pastries, cold cereals), with no real “hot breakfast” (no eggs, bacon, sausage, or oatmeal).
• Primary option: Cabanas is the best lunch option (and the most crowded) due to its tremendous selection. Iced jumbo shrimp and crab claws are a signature menu item most days; you’ll also find freshly grilled meats, a wide variety of side items, some interesting international selections, and plenty of dessert. Snag a table outside on the deck to enjoy a beautiful seaside lunch.
• Secondary option: The food service windows on the pool deck are a great option at any time of day, especially if you’re enjoying the day poolside. You don’t even need to change out of your sopping-wet swimsuit to grab a meal. These windows are usually open well after Cabanas has stopped serving lunch, so they’re a great late afternoon option.
• Other options : Triton’s usually serves a lunch option on most days if you want a sit-down meal but don’t want to wade through the crowds at Cabanas. Room Service is another good option.
• Primary option: Your assigned rotational dining restaurant is your best bet for dinner. Dining at these locations is the highlight of each day onboard the ship, thanks to the themed menus, specialty décor, and personalized service from a dedicated wait staff who remains with you each night of the cruise. (They’re likely to become your favorite Crew Members onboard — Katie and I still talk about Potchara and Heny, our servers from a 2019 Alaska Cruise on the Disney Wonder).
• Secondary option: As an alternative to your pre-scheduled rotational dining restaurant, you might opt to dine at Cabanas, which is totally different at night. While breakfast and lunch there can feel a bit hectic, Dinner at Cabanas is much more relaxed. No carrying around your plate and searching for a seat — a server presents you with a menu and brings food to you. This is a great option if the menu for one of your assigned restaurants doesn’t look that appealing to you, or if you’re not keen on dressing up for Formal Night.
• Other options: Many cruisers enjoy dedicating at least one night of their cruise to an adult-exclusive meal at Palo. Otherwise, room service and the poolside quick-service windows are a good choice.

Off-Hours Eating and Snacking

• Primary option: For cravings outside the main meal periods, I recommend the quick-service windows such as Pete’s Boiler Bites, Daisy’s De-Lites, and Pinocchio’s Pizzeria. Their grab-and-go convenience makes them a great choice to tide you over between meals. Individual portions are a bit smaller so you won’t spoil your dinner (unless you want to, because it’s still all-you-can-eat).
• Secondary option: Room Service is available day and night, up until about 1:30 AM on the last morning of your cruise. So if it’s 3AM and you suddenly find yourself in desperate need of a hamburger, it’s the only way to go. As a slightly less extreme example, there’s something delightful about having warm cookies and milk delivered to your room just before bedtime.

Disney Wonder Pools and Water Slides

Twist ’n’ Spout Water Slide

Part of the AquaLab (see below), Twist ‘n’ Spout is a bright yellow double-looping waterslide. You’ll twist and turn over almost 250 feet before a thrilling splashdown. Guests must be at least 38” tall to ride, and adult supervision is required for kids under age 16.

Pools and Splash Pads

This multi-level water playground is a great place for kids to cool off during their cruise. It includes a small wading pool, plenty of geysers and pop jets, pouring “paint” cans and showerheads, leaky pipes, and Donald’s Boiler (a character-shaped contraption that occasionally blows its top, drenching everyone). Intended for ages 3+; adult supervision required for those under age 16.

Goofy’s Pool

Goofy’s Pool on deck 9 serves as the family pool onboard and is the ship’s largest pool area. The giant FunnelVision video screen and a large stage are nearby, so there’s always something to enjoy while swimming. Intended for ages 3+ (must be toilet trained), with adult supervision required for those under age 16. This pool is occasionally closed so it can be covered and used as additional deck space for the sail-away party and other major events.

• Dory’s Reef

Toddlers aged 3 years or younger can enjoy this 400-foot splash deck featuring spraying water and pop jets. Swim diapers are required, and children must be supervised by an adult.

Quiet Cove Pool

A serene oasis for ages 18+. A pool and whirlpool tubs are the main features, along with ample lounging space and easy access to the adult beverage of your choice.

Disney Wonder Kids Clubs and Teen Clubs

You might be surprised by how much time your kids will want to spend away from you during your Disney Cruise! One of the main reasons Disney Cruise Line is the best cruise line for kids is its fantastic youth activities spaces, including a substantial portion of Deck 5 which is dedicated solely to passengers under the age of 12.

• Disney’s Oceaneer Club

The Oceaneer Club is the place where your kids will likely spend a large amount of their time onboard. This secure facility is accessible only to kids aged 3-10 and trained youth activities staff (though adults are welcome to visit during established Open House hours). Inside, kids will find specially-themed spaces and kid-friendly activities. Best of all, it’s all included in the cost of your Disney cruise!

Andy’s Room

Kids are immersed in the world of Disney·Pixar’s Toy Story movies in this unique multi-level play area including the Slinky Dog Slide.

Marvel Super Hero Academy

Kids visit a top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, and learn to summon their inner Super Hero. There’s plenty of time for freeform play, with occasional structured activities including visits and training with real Super Heroes.

The Wheelhouse

Take the wheel of a large video screen navigation simulator and see if you have what it takes to steer a Disney Cruise Ship.

Tweens and young teens – ages 11 to 14 – have a space all to themselves onboard the Disney Wonder. Edge is the perfect place to relax thanks to its moody boiler room feel. There’s a huge 98″ video screen for watching Disney movies, a dance floor, plus plenty of video games and crafts. A mix of planned activities and unstructured free time leaves plenty of opportunities for socializing.

Climb right inside one of the Disney Wonder’s iconic red smokestack funnels to reach this teens-only retreat. Passengers aged 14 to 17 can enjoy a specialty coffee or smoothie while relaxing with newfound friends in a safe environment. For techy types, there are plenty of TVs, video games, and tablets. Meanwhile, active teens will enjoy dance parties, karaoke sessions, and group activities.

it’s a small world nursery!

While there’s no in-room babysitting on the Disney Wonder, infants and toddlers aged three and younger are well-cared-for onboard thanks to the it’s a small world nursery!

Youth counselors will happily feed, change, and interact with the little ones while parents and guardians enjoy other parts of the ship.

This nursery service does require a nominal fee, charged by the half-hour with a one-hour minimum. Discounts are available for multiple children in the same family.

With live Broadway-style shows and lively deck parties, the Disney Wonder offers a wide variety of onboard entertainment.

Broadway-Style Shows in the Walt Disney Theatre

Each night of your cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a live show in the beautiful Walt Disney Theatre. The nearly-1,000-seat theatre hosts three Broadway-style shows during your cruise, with showtimes offered opposite your dinner time; if you have early dinner, you’ll catch the late show… and vice versa. You can even watch a recorded version of the shows on your stateroom television if you don’t want to head to the theatre at showtime.

Passengers on longer voyages will also enjoy other additions such as a magician, hypnotist, or family-friendly comedian on nights when the Broadway-style shows are dark.

Disney Dreams – An Enchanted Classic

A touching tale of a young girl at the age of not believing – follow along as she learns how to believe in herself thanks to the power of positive thinking along with some help from favorite Disney characters and memorable music.

Frozen – A Musical Spectacular

A lively musical retelling of Anna and Elsa’s journey. Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf are all here to join in the adventure, and of course all the familiar songs are there, too.

The Golden Mickeys

It’s awards night with all the glitz and glamor of the red carpet. Who will win “Most Romantic” or “Most Heroic”? And more importantly, who will host the show? The emcee is missing! Something tells me it’ll all get sorted out in the nick of time, and we might even learn a little bit about believing in ourselves along the way. Featuring songs from about a dozen different Disney films, this show is a fan favorite that’s sure to have you humming along.

Select 7-night sailings on the Disney Wonder include a Frozen-themed evening, complete with special menus inside the dining rooms, an Anna’s Chocolate Chase scavenger hunt, and a Freezing the Night Away deck party.

Pirates in the Caribbean Deck Party with Fireworks

Some itineraries may include a Pirate night. Enjoy a special themed menu at dinner, then head up to the pool deck for a raucous live show with favorite Disney characters and fireworks at sea!

Note: not every itinerary offers a pirate night, and fireworks may be canceled due to weather. Pirate night is  never offered on Alaskan sailings due to the fireworks’ impact on wildlife and the natural surroundings.

PIXAR Pals Party

Found only onboard Alaska sailings on the Wonder (in place of Pirate Night), this party features character greetings and lively music from your favorite Disney•PIXAR films.

Disney Movies in the Buena Vista Theatre

First-run and classic favorite Disney, Marvel, PIXAR, and LucasFilm movies are shown all day long in the Buena Vista Theatre. There’s no need to buy a ticket – just drop in at showtime and grab a seat.

If your cruise falls during the premiere of a highly-anticipated Disney film, there will likely be a huge “PremEAR at Sea” showing first in the Walt Disney Theatre. After that, it’ll be shown repeatedly in the Buena Vista Theatre for the remainder of the cruise.

Disney Wonder Spas and Salons

Disney Wonder offers a full-service spa onboard the ship, plus many other health and wellness services to help you melt away the troubles of the real world during your cruise.

Senses Spa and Salon

Pamper yourself like no place else at Senses Spa & Salon onboard the Disney Wonder. Choose from a comprehensive spa menu , salon services, or rejuvenation procedures at this restful retreat on Deck 9. Offerings include aroma stone therapy, deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, facials, acupuncture, teeth whitening, shampooing & cut/style, manipedis, CoolSculpting, and more. Complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, sandals & robes, showers, and lockers complete the package. Services here require an upcharge.

This special area of Senses offers treatments exclusively for teens aged 13-17. A parent or guardian must accompany the teen for the duration of the treatment, and parent/teen combined services can be purchased if desired.

Fitness Center

Keep up your workout routine even while you’re on vacation with the Disney Wonder’s Fitness Center. Those looking for an equipment-based workout will find a nice selection of weight machines, cardio equipment, ellipticals, and treadmills. For a group experience, try yoga, Pilates, or an aerobics class. You can even arrange for a one-on-one analysis and training session with a professional personal coach.

• Walking/Jogging Track

The Deck 4 promenade of the Disney Wonder serves as a full-circle walking/jogging track. Although I’m no runner, I do enjoy a leisurely walk here at least once per cruise to help break up that sense of “only short bursts of activity” that can set in on a longer sailing. Being on Deck 4 gives you a close-up view of the water — close enough to notice, perhaps, a porpoise breaching the surface. That makes this deck not only a great place to exercise, but also a great place to relax in a deck chair.

Deck 4 Promenade

A nice side bonus of this track is that as you make the turn to circle around to reach the opposite side of the ship, you’ll get a look at some of the mechanical wizardry that keeps the ship functioning. For someone like me who loves behind-the-scenes gadgetry, it’s a neat perk that helps to nudge me out onto the track.

Heavy Machinery

Psst… here’s my favorite super secret tip for the Disney Wonder : if you’re on a glacier day during an Alaska cruise and find that the decks are too crowded to get a good view, take the walking path on deck 4 and head toward the back of the ship. As the path transitions from an open promenade to an enclosed area behind the metal walls of the ship, you’ll encounter several giant open air portholes that offer a great view. Few folks know they’re here, so there’s rarely any “competition” for a spot. Don’t tell anyone! 😉

Your right about the smaller ships. My husband and I had only sailed on the Magic & Wonder but finally tried the Dream two weeks ago. It was a pretty boat but much bigger than we were used to. It certainly reminded us we’re getting older lol. I think we’ll stick with the Magic once it comes back to Florida next year.

The 2,713-passenger Disney Wonder debuted in 1999. It was most recently updated in 2019; the refurbishment rolled out new family-oriented amenities and entertainment offerings, like Tiana's Place with live music and southern cuisine inspired by the Disney movie, "The Princess and the Frog." 

The ship offers plenty of onboard activities, with 10 designated family areas, five youth clubs and seven adults-only spaces. While younger passengers play at age-appropriate clubs, grown-ups can relax at the adults-only Quiet Cove Pool. When hunger strikes, Wonder offers six dining options, including one adults-only specialty restaurant.

Like the majority of the ship, staterooms are designed with families in mind. Interior cabins can accommodate up to four passengers, while larger suites can sleep up to seven. All cabins come equipped with flat-screen TVs, seating areas and classic Disney designs. Recent cruisers noted the expensive cost of a trip on the Disney Wonder, but most felt the quality of service was top-notch. 

Disney Wonder departs from a range of ports throughout Australia and New Zealand, as well as  Vancouver , for sailings around the South Pacific, Mexico and Alaska.

The Disney Wonder had its first sailing in 1999, making it the second ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. The Wonder is a sister ship to the original Disney Magic, with a similar layout and design.

The ship had its maiden voyage on August 15, 1999, originally sailing three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas. Within the past decade, the itineraries for the Wodner have changed. Now, the ship sails on various itineraries with stops in Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and more. In fall 2023, the ship made history by beginning a new itinerary in Australia, sailing out of Sydney with stops in Auckland, Brisbane, and Melbourne. The ship eventually made its way back to Hawaii, with plans to return to Vancouver in 2024.

Onboard the ship you’ll find Broadway-style shows such as Frozen, The Golden Mickeys , and Disney Dreams , with restaurants inspired by The Little Mermaid , and The Princess and the Frog . In total, there are 11 decks to explore on the Disney Wonder, and we’re sharing a bit more of what you can find below!

Where Does the Disney Wonder Sail?

For 2024 and 2025 sailings, the Disney Wonder departs from ports in New Zealand and Australia, as well as San Diego, California, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Vancouver, Canada. The ship will offer cruises through Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, and the Pacific Coast to enjoy, anywhere from two to fifteen nights.

Staterooms on the Disney Wonder

In total, there are 875 staterooms on the Disney Wonder, about two-thirds of what you’ll find on the newest ship, the Disney Wish. When it comes to choosing accommodations, you can choose from Concierge, which is the largest accommodation with a private verandah. Or, you can choose a non-concierge room with a private verandah, the second largest room available. There are also Oceanview rooms offering a porthole or two, as well as Inside Staterooms with no view outside.

Inside Staterooms

On the Disney Magic, you’ll have one inside stateroom option: a Standard Inside Stateroom . There is no exterior or ocean view to be found in these rooms, but they do sleep up to four adults in total. Your two options are:

• Deluxe Inside Stateroom
• Standard Inside Stateroom

The Deluxe Inside Stateroom has more square footage than the Standard Inside Stateroom , with 214 sq. ft. versus 184 sq. ft. Both types of rooms can sleep up to three or four, with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa, and upper berth pull-down bed available. The Deluxe Inside Stateroom also comes with a “split bath,” meaning there’s one bathroom with a vanity, sink, shower, and tub, then a half bathroom with a vanity, sink, and toilet. By comparison, the Standard Inside Stateroom offers one full bathroom with a vanity, sink, shower and tub.

Oceanview Staterooms

The Oceanview Staterooms offer a few of the sea from your room through one or two portholes. While these won’t have a deck for you to go outside, you will be able to enjoy some stunning views from a generously sized window overlooking the ocean. There’s just one option for this type of room:

• Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom

The Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms come with either one large porthole window or two smaller porthole windows. Each room sleeps up to three or four, with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa, and upper berth pull-down bed available.

Verandah Staterooms

If you want to spend some time gazing at the beautiful ocean views, you’ll want to consider a room with a private verandah . There are two choices on board the Disney Magic:

• Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah
• Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

The Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah  has a queen bed, a single sleeper sofa, and an upper berth pull-down bed, meaning it sleeps three or four people. For a larger group, you’ll want the Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah , which sleeps up to five with a queen bed, single sleeper sofa, wall pull-down bed, and upper berth pull-down bed. Both options come with their own private verandah.

The Concierge rooms are the Disney Magic’s most luxurious accommodations. T here are four  types of concierge staterooms :

• Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah
• Concierge 2-Bedroom Suite with Verandah
• Concierge 1-Bedroom Suite with Verandah
• Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom

The Concierge Royal Suites have art deco décor, with two bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a verandah, a living room, a dining salon, and more. They can sleep up to seven, making this ideal for larger families or groups. The 1-Bedroom Suite has a separate bedroom, 1.5 bathrooms, a verandah, a living room, and a wet bar, and can sleep up to five. The 2-Bedroom Suite has two separate bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, a verandah, a living room, and can sleep up to seven. Finally, the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom sleeps up to five and also comes with a private verandah.

Dining on the Disney Wonder

Just like all of Disney Cruise Line’s ships, the Disney Wonder comes with a variety of different dining options. Whether you are looking for a full meal, a character dining experience, or just a quick bite to eat, you’ll find it on board the ship.

Like all other Disney Cruise Line ships, the Disney Wonder offers rotational dining for dinners. This style of dining allows you to try each of the main restaurants onboard during your sailing, though you can choose to skip a night or two of rotational dining and secure a reservation at a different restaurant not included with your sailing instead (at an additional cost). Additionally, you can choose to order room service. Here’s a look at all of the dinner options on the Disney Wonder :

• Animator’s Palate
• Palo Steakhouse (reservations required)
• Royal Court Tea (reservations required)

Aside from rotational dining, you’ll also find casual dining onboard that does not require a reservation:

For adults, there are also different bars and lounges available on the ship:

On every Disney Cruise Line sailing you’ll find plenty to do — and the Disney Wonder is no exception! On the Wonder you can enjoy Broadway-caliber theater performances, character meet and greets, and fun for the whole family. About the Disney Wonder

Disney Wonder joined the Disney Cruise Line fleet in August 1999, as the second ship in the DCL family.

The Disney Wonder underwent extensive renovations while in dry dock from September 9 to October 23, 2016, in Cadiz, Spain.

Although the Disney Wonder is almost 20 years old, it is still fresh, new and relevant due to it's major overhaul in the fall of 2016.

Disney refurbished and enhanced much of the ship including...

1. Adding a new jazzy addition to it's rotational dining called, Tiana’s Place

2. Marvel's Super Hero Academy was added to the Oceaneer Club

3. A brand new English pub called Crown and Fin

4. A pool deck remodel which includes Twist ‘n’ Spout waterslide

How Big is the Disney Wonder?

984 feet long and over 84,000 tons, it is the same size as the Disney Magic , which was introduced to the Disney Cruise Line fleet at the same time as the Wonder.

CAPACITY Passengers: 2,700 Staterooms: 875 Crew (aka "Cast Members"): 950

That is one Cast Member for every 2.8 guests!

• The Disney Wonder is 984 feet long which is longer than 3 football fields
• The interior is decorated in art nouveau style, which features organic influences and curved patterns
• Each of the 4 DCL ships has a unique statue in their atrium lobby. Disney Wonder’s Statue is Ariel.
• Tinker Bell is the Godmother of the Disney Wonder
• The ship can convert 500,000 gallons of seawater into fresh water every day
• On embarkation day, the crew will load approximately 10,000 suitcases onboard
• The stern (the back end of the ship) features Donald and his troublemaking nephews
• The bow (the front end of the ship) features Steamboat Willie

Disney Cruise Line offers a different dining experience each night, as you will rotate between three main restaurants for your dinner. Your service crew will rotate with you!

Tiana's Place

A Disney Wonder signature restaurant, Tiana’s Place was added to the ship's rotational dining when it was refurbished in 2016. The theme and menu is inspired by Disney's The Princess and the Frog . The cuisine is Louisiana-inspired and live jazz music and entertaining storytelling make this a lot of fun.

In The Little Mermaid , Ariel's father's name is Triton, king of the sea. Part of the rotational dining, one of your dinner's will take place here. Additionally, the restaurant is open daily for breakfast and lunch. The theme is "underwater elegance", to remind us of Ariel's underwater kingdom.

Animator's Palate

Our personal favorite restaurant and beloved by most cruisers. Disney animations come to life...while you eat. We won't say too much here, but check out my Animator's Palate tips here - read tips #43-46.

This is the Disney Wonder's finest dining experience and it is exclusively for adults.

The Northern Italian cuisine is worth the additional fee you pay for it, and when you couple delicious cooking with spectacular sea views, you have a brunch or dinner to remember.

Reservations are required and there's a dress code as well, so refer to our Disney Cruise packing list for advice on what to wear.

DISNEY WONDER ENTERTAINMENT

Every evening on the Disney Wonder, a marquee entertainment event will take place in the Walt Disney Theatre.

Types of shows include premium Broadway-caliber performances, along with hypnotists, musicians, jugglers, comedians, or a feature movie – typically something Disney-owned that is new to theaters or is coming soon.

The Walt Disney Theatre is located on Deck 4 Forward.

Frozen, A Musical Spectacular

One of the newest shows in the entire Disney Cruise fleet, Frozen is only shown on Disney Wonder. It is SO good; everyone raves about it. If you’re only going to see one show while aboard the ship – not recommended – make sure it’s this one.

We take an autograph book ( see our packing list ) and collect as many signatures as we can.

Character Breakfast

On select 7+ night cruises, you can eat breakfast with Disney and Disney Junior Characters. They go from table to table, posing for photos, giving high fives, and saying hi.

Tickets are FREE, but they are limited. Again, you'll want to jump on these during online check-in .

Called “Funnel Vision” because it’s mounted onto the forward funnel of the ship.

Concierge guests will enjoy this luxurious, chic escape from the rest of the ship.

The Concierge Level Lounge allows guests to access the internet, drink a cocktail, watch news or sports on a huge TV, and partake of complimentary beverages and food served throughout the day.

Concierge Sundeck

Connected to the Concierge Lounge, by a short staircase, you'll find a sundeck available only to Concierge level guests.

Perched above the Quiet Cove Pool, it's a quiet area for sunning and relaxing.

It offers expansive views of the ocean in virtually all directions, and if you want a soda or snack, just pop back into the Concierge Lounge.

Towels and sunscreen are provided.

OTHER ONBOARD SERVICES

The Health Center is available when you're feeling sick, need first aid or have a medical emergency.

The clinic keeps regular daily hours to offer care for non-emergencies. If you have an emergency, the ship has a doctor and nurse on call 24/7.

Got a question or request? This is your place. I have found the crew that manages Guest Services to be very responsive and caring. 

They can help you make spa appointments or dining reservations, plan your vacation by explaining activities, ship amenities, and the ship schedule.

Questions with your bill are handled here. You may also request a free crib or diaper genie here. Book these when you first arrive to make sure you get one.

It’s all about the perks. It’s pretty much the only way to get a Disney cruise for a discounted price.

Here’s the low down:

Disney Wonder

The Disney Wonder was the second ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet which set sail a year after her sister ship, Disney Magic . The bow features Steamboat Willie at the helm leading the way and Donald doing his best to finish up the paint job on the aft name plate while under duress from his nephew Huey who found a pair of scissors. The interior design is art nouveau with a more natural whimsical feel.  Between September and November 2016, the Disney Wonder underwent a transformation in Cadiz, Spain that saw many spaces re-imagined.

Launched in 1999 as Disney Cruise Line's second newbuild, the 2,400-passenger Disney Wonder still manages to impress even two decades into its career. Refits in 2016 and 2019 refreshed cabins and public rooms aboard Disney Wonder, and Disney Cruise Line frequently sends this globetrotting ship to a number of homeports across the United States and Canada, including Vancouver, Honolulu, San Diego and New Orleans.

Other areas of Disney Wonder have been rebuilt to allow for more flexibility when cruising in the cooler waters of Alaska: the spectacular Concierge Lounge (for Disney's top-tier suite passengers) offers sweeping views of the ship's Pool Deck, while the Cove Café, below, boasts more windowed spaces than its Disney Magic counterpart.

No matter where you sail to -- or whether you're traveling by yourself or with kids and grandparents in tow -- Disney Wonder offers a magical cruise experience for the young and young-at-heart. Although designed expressly with families and kids in mind (we love the lowered ceilings on Deck 5, where the ship's kids' clubs are housed), Disney Wonder is never kitschy. Instead, its interiors often reflect Art Deco and Art Nouveau touches that recall the grand transatlantic ocean liners of days gone by, done in a whimsical, Disney-fied way.

From the high quality service delivered from the ship's gracious onboard crewmembers to the jaw-dropping, Broadway-quality musical productions culled from the Disney library, Disney Wonder offers an experience that is every bit as enjoyable for adults as it is for kids. Don't be surprised to find yourself unexpectedly moved by some of the magical moments onboard -- unexpected little touches that Disney fans refer to as "pixie dust".

Disney Wonder Deck Plans Have Areas for Kids -- and Also Lots of Adult-Only Spots

Disney Wonder deck plans reveal plenty of Disney's trademark pixie dust magic, with dedicated public areas designed for kids, families, and adults alike. The ship -- which spans 11 passenger-accessible decks -- even has some unique features, such as the Vibe teen's club, which is tucked away in the ship's forward (dummy) funnel.

Even the way Disney Wonder is laid out is incredibly intuitive. Most dining and entertainment venues reside on Decks 3 and 4, with the forward end of Deck 3 being set aside strictly for adults. "After Hours" -- as it is known -- begins forward of the midship elevator bank and is identifiable by the sharp shift in décor, with muted greys and blues highlighting a sweeping corridor that swings around to the port side of the vessel to reveal Disney Wonder's adult-only enclaves: Azure (a main showroom and lounge home to late-night trivia sessions and cruise staples like the Love and Marriage show); the Cadillac Lounge, Disney Wonder's automotive-themed base for bourbon, cognac and live piano music; and the English-themed Crown & Fin pub.

Kids, meanwhile, have their own areas on Deck 5. While the extreme forward and aft ends of this deck are taken up by cabins (more on those below), Deck 5 houses the Oceaneer Lab and Oceaneer Kids Club, along with the "It's a Small World" nursery. Further aft, the Buena Vista Theatre shows first-run Disney movies and select classics throughout the sailing -- though we miss the cool concession stand found outside the theatre aboard Wonder's more modern fleetmates, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy.

Up top, Decks 10 and 9 are given to more outdoor pursuits: passengers will find the ship's Splash zone and waterslide for kids; the family pool; and the more subdued Quiet Cove Adult Pool just forward of the first funnel, adjacent to the upscale Signals pool bar and the Cove Café.

The bright-yellow Mickey's Pool Slide and Splash Zone are perfect for the little ones (and, let's face it, adults love the waterslide too). Disney's thought the placement of this fun zone through -- adjacent is Pete's Boiler Bites (think burgers, fries, and chicken nuggets), along with Cabanas -- Disney Wonder's casual buffet-style eatery that is open for breakfast and lunch.

Perhaps Disney Wonder's most underrated feature: a beautiful, teak-lined Promenade Deck that encircles the exterior of the ship on Deck 4, complete with padded loungers.

Disney Wonder Rooms Are Custom-Built For Families and Are Larger Than Average

Disney Cruise staterooms aboard Disney Wonder are larger than average, and exceedingly comfortable thanks to a 2016 refit that added more storage space, electrical outlets and USB connections, and revitalized soft furnishings.

Along with sister-ship Disney Magic, Disney Wonder inaugurated Disney Cruise Line's unique "split bathroom" concept. Most staterooms (except insides) have this clever arrangement, with two separate bathroom areas: one offers a shower and tub combination and a sink, while a second adjacent room contains a toilet and sink. This allows two people to effectively get ready for the day at the same time -- a bonus for families.

Storage is plentiful, and rooms are larger than industry average. Oceanview staterooms sport oversized "porthole" windows, while balcony rooms offer generous verandas. Even these are kid-proofed: balcony doors offer a deadbolt about six feet off the ground, and balcony railings are covered with plexiglass to prevent little hands from attempting a climb up the railings.

Overall, accommodations feel decidedly upscale. Disney's H20+ toiletries are good enough that you'll be tempted to purchase them in the gift shop to take home with you. Towels are imprinted with the Disney Cruise Line logo, and beds are wonderfully comfortable.

In the past, Disney provided two-way phones in staterooms to allow family members to keep track of one another, but these were absent on our Disney Wonder sailing. Instead, Disney's new Navigator app allows passengers to chat with one another, and we found the internet even allowed for iMessages to be sent to one another -- even when logged out of the ship's paid internet plans.

Keep your eyes peeled in your stateroom for the line's trademark "Hidden Mickey's" -- surprise silhouettes of the most recognizable mouse in the world.

Disney Wonder Restaurants Have Rotational Dining -- and There are Extra Fee Options Too

Disney Cruise Line pioneered the concept of Rotational Dining when it debuted in 1998 aboard Disney Magic, and Disney Wonder carries on this tradition.

Passengers can choose either early or late-seating, and are assigned a designated table for dinner each evening. It's a throwback to how dining used to be on cruise ships, and allows passengers and wait staff to truly get to know each other throughout the voyage.

But in a unique twist, Disney rotates passengers -- and their servers -- through three distinct, complimentary restaurants throughout the voyage. These dining rooms have their own unique themes, menu offerings and specialty drinks, and waiters even wear different uniforms for each room.

Aboard Disney Wonder, guests will find three separate dining rooms that passengers rotate through.  These include Triton's -- the line's Little Mermaid-inspired restaurant on Deck 3 midship that focuses on French cuisine and is the most formal of the three dining rooms. Passengers even enter through two grand French doors situated just off the ship's atrium.

All the way aft on Deck 4 is the Animator's Palate, an animation-inspired room that starts off in black-and-white and gradually transforms into a world of color and animation. It's not as gee-whiz-techno-crazy as the same venue aboard the newer Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, but it is charming nonetheless, and offers classics like Smoked Salmon Tartare, Pennette Bolognese, and Herb Crusted Pork Chops.

Unique to Disney Wonder is Tiana's Place -- a creole-themed restaurant patterned after the classic Disney film, The Princess and the Frog. From the Creole-inspired dishes to the delectable New Orleans-style beignets (which you will almost certainly order multiples of), Tiana's Place offers a dose of Southern cuisine in a space that is one of the most attractive restaurants onboard.

The food quality matches the décor, too: dishes on our four-night sailing were tasty and well-presented, if not haute cuisine. Disney does a great job of catering to both kids and adults, and there's bound to be something on the menu to suit every taste.

At the upper end of the dining echelon is Palo, the adults-only specialty restaurant situated on Deck 10 aft. This Italian-Californian dining venue offers an indulgent Sea Day Brunch that will leave you stuffed to the gills, while dinners here are an adult-oriented enclave of class and sophistication; a welcomed date night for parents looking to get away from the kids.

Service at Palo approaches luxury line quality, and the food, wine and cocktail selection pairs perfectly. It's all very upscale for a very modest price, though some a 'la carte dinner selections can really ring the bill up quickly.  

You'll definitely need reservations for brunch or dinner at Palo -- demand for this restaurant is high, but bookings can be made pre-cruise via the Disney Cruise personalizer online, or on the Navigator app.

There are Lots of Things to Do on Disney Wonder For All Ages

Entertainment options are plentiful on Disney Wonder -- and not just for the kids, either.

During the day, Disney Wonder offers a wide array of character encounters (which are "Meet and Waves" instead of "Meet and Greets" during these pandemic times) across a number of public areas, from the pool deck to the promenade deck and the ship's central atrium.

Other fun diversions include family-friendly trivia on nearly every Disney subject imaginable ("Frozen" trivia packed the house on our sailing), first-run movies in the Buena Vista Theatre, and evening production shows in the Walt Disney Theatre that are truly Broadway-quality. Our sailing included a production of Frozen that was imaginative and kept audiences young and old rapt for the entire 70-minute duration. While most cruise lines are transitioning to short, 30-minute shows, nary a person in the theatre even shifted in their seat during Disney's evening feature-length performances.

Dedicated kids clubs offer activities for a wide variety of ages outside of the ship's regular scheduled entertainment, but pool parties, Pirates of the Caribbean themed-nights and fireworks at sea are also offered on the ship's warm-weather itineraries.

Adults aren't left out of the mix, either. Late-night adult trivia is offered in the Azure lounge, and we watched one of the raunchiest "Love and Marriage"-style gameshows we've ever seen during a late-evening show for adults only. Other offerings include pub tunes, whisky tastings, martini mixology classes, and wine appreciation classes.

One thing you will not find aboard Disney Wonder -- or any Disney Cruise Line ship for that matter -- is a casino.

Kids Clubs aboard Disney Wonder Have Something For All Ages

It's no surprise that Disney excels at its onboard offerings for kids, and the Kids Clubs aboard Disney Wonder are no exception, with dedicated spaces for everyone from infants to teenagers.

Most of the kids clubs aboard Disney Wonder are clustered on Deck 5, where ceilings have been lowered to make kids feel, well, a lot like adults. Tall parents, take note!

The It’s a Small World Nursery (temporarily closed on our sailing due to COVID-19 protocols) is located at the aft end of the corridor on Deck 5, and offers hourly babysitting services for little ones from six months to three years of age. Reservations must be made in advance, and a small surcharge applies for babysitting services within the nursery (all other kid's clubs are complimentary).

Kids three to 12 years of age can enjoy all the fun activities at Disney's Oceaneer Club . Features of these clubs differ between ships, and on Disney Wonder kids will find four separately-themed play areas: Andy's Room (from Toy Story); Marvel's Super Hero Academy; Disney Junior; and a Frozen-themed interactive playspace with appearances from Anna, Elsa and -- of course -- lovable Olaf.

Also on Deck 5 is the Oceaneer Lab , an additional space for kids aged three to 12 years of age. Here, kids can participate in imaginative games, experiments and activities that are designed to stimulate as well as educate.  Other ships in the fleet have a seafaring theme in the Oceaneer Lab, but Disney Wonder is the only ship to offer an Oceaneer Lab geared around space exploration with none other than Buzz Lightyear -- to infinity, and beyond!

Once kids get too cool for school, they can shuffle off to Edge , a private space designed just for Tweens aboard Disney Wonder. Designed to look like an old boiler room, this hangout space offers kids video game stations, tables for arts and crafts, a dance floor for parties and games, and a 98-inch flat-screen plasma TV to watch Disney movies.

Teenagers get what is arguably the coolest private space on Disney Wonder -- a special club inset into the ship's forward funnel. At Vibe , teens have their own private chillout space. It's not as elaborate as the same space aboard sister-ships Disney Dream or Disney Fantasy, with their open-bow deck area, but being tucked away in the ship's funnel isn't bad either. Video games, board games, and TV's grace this cool living-room-style venue, complete with faux brick walls, plush couches and old-school arcade games.

That is, if kids can tear themselves away from the rest of the ship. Disney Wonder offers so many activities for kids (and, frankly, grown-ups of all ages) that trying to see and do it all in just a single week is a nearly-impossible challenge.

Covid-19 Health and Safety Protocols on Disney Wonder

Currently, Disney Cruise Line requires all passengers aged 5 years and older to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Guests who are not vaccine-eligible because of age must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test result (paid for by the Guest) taken between 3 days and 24 hours before their sail date. Guests ages 4 and under must complete the testing requirements. The test should be a NAAT test, rapid PCR test or lab-based PCR test. Unlike some cruise lines, Disney will not accept rapid antigen tests or rapid antigen "test-at-home" kits.

Pre-embarkation antigen testing is conducted for all passengers prior to boarding Disney Wonder. Passengers under five years of age will be required to do this again, despite the PCR testing requirement prior to pierside arrival.

Before Boarding • Proof of full vaccination required for all passengers over the age of 5 • Passengers four and under must complete a mandatory PCR test prior to arrival at the pier, at the guest's expense • All passengers need to upload proof of vaccination to Disney's Safe Passage website and check-in via the Disney Cruise Line app • All passengers will undergo rapid antigen testing pierside before embarking the vessel, at Disney's expense. Passengers must wait for their booking number to appear on screens in the terminal before proceeding to check-in.

Theater and shows on disney wonder.

Disney Wonder has two theaters, both of which have fantastic views with unobstructed sightlines from any seat in the house. The 977-seat Walt Disney Theatre, on Deck 4 forward, hosts the ship's spectacular production shows. The current lineup on Wonder is: "The Golden Mickeys," an awards-style show that rotates through some classic Disney films to present winners for best hero or best friendship (arrive early to be interviewed on the red carpet); "Disney Dreams" evokes the whimsy of Disney storytelling as a little girl named Anne Marie teams up with Peter Pan to find her inner magic; and Frozen, a Musical Spectacular, which brings Anna, Elsa and Olaf to the stage for a retelling of the wildly popular "Frozen" Disney film with state-of-the-art projections, puppetry and all its signature songs.

Preludes is a bar and snack counter that sells drinks and goodies before the show. There is a lobby area in front of the theater, in between the Preludes counters on either side that sometimes hosts character appearances (including Santa during the holidays).

The Buena Vista Theatre, on Deck 5 midship, is styled like much of the interior decor on Wonder -- there's Art Deco touches everywhere you look from the marquee in front to the patterns on the carpeting. This theater shows first-run Disney films multiple times throughout the sailing -- some even in 3D. A cart selling popcorn, candy and souvenir cups with soda is located just outside. We had a chance to see some films onboard, before we ever had a chance to see them on land.

Disney Cruise Line strongly discourages saving seats in the theater before shows -- the venues open about a half-hour before showtime, so come early to guarantee you get the spot you want.

Daily Fun and Things to Do on Disney Wonder

Disney's heart and soul is in its youth activities, and both kids and teens can barely be found once they make friends in their respective clubs. Apart from their dedicated spaces, most children (in warm enough weather) can be found splashing and sliding around on the outer decks. Here is where you'll find the FunnelVision jumbotron TV (midship on Deck 9), which shows Disney movies -- and even trivia -- throughout the day and night. Even outside of the kids' clubs and pool decks, there are still plenty of activities to occupy families and adults onboard.

Disney trivia or character drawing is held at least once per day in the Promenade Lounge or D Lounge. (Trivia for the older crowd is held in the Crown & Fin Pub.) We also saw 3D crafts, which resulted in miniature Mickeys and Minnies, and napkin-folding lessons. Bingo with a $10,000 jackpot is also held for the adults, but there's an extra fee to participate. "The Art of the Theme Show" complimentary ship tour is offered at least once per cruise, offering a comprehensive and behind-the-scenes look at the spaces onboard and some insight into their design.

Once during the cruise, a Royal Court Royal Tea is held to which tiny princes and princesses are invited to attend for an elaborate affair full of tea (really just juice, which is not as dangerous to spill), sandwiches, pastries, cupcakes, small gifts and their favorite Disney royalty. This tea is steep -- you'll want to save up for this. On our sailing, the event sold out online before anyone boarded, as such it wasn't advertised. We learned later in the cruise that it was held on the first sea day in Triton's.

Beverage seminars -- like tequila tasting or mixology class -- are available for an additional fee. Coffee meetups are organized for the 18-to-20 sect. We also saw a cooking class offered on one day.

Nightlife on Disney Wonder

A lot of evening activities on Wonder are scheduled around bedtimes, so be sure to pick your dining time accordingly (it's the same for the entire cruise). Main theater productions are shown twice each evening; you can either dine before or after the show. Special events, like Pirate Night or Mickey's Tree Lighting Magic on Merrytime holiday sailings, are typically held between early and late dining, at around 7:30 p.m.

While the theater is the premiere entertainment facility on the ship, the Pirates in the Caribbean dinner and deck party is a highlight event. This evening of adventure, music and dancing begins in the dining room with a pirate scroll menu and bandannas for all, then moves upstairs and outdoors to a pool deck party near Goofy's pool. Kids are invited to join a team and play a video game using motion-sensing technology to steer a ship or navigate a slippery deck. Afterward, you can dance with some of your favorite characters dressed in pirate garb, watch other people react as they're caught dancing on camera and featured on the jumbo LED screen, and see Mickey rappel from atop the ship's funnel to fight Captain Hook. The night is capped off with a fireworks display. (There are no fireworks on Alaska cruises due to environmental laws.)

If you're looking for a night out, activities in the kid and teen clubs run pretty late -- close to midnight. Family activities, like karaoke, are typically held in D Lounge. The bulk of late-night activities for adults is concentrated to the After Hours section of the ship, a collections of bars, lounges and a nightclub, strictly for the 18-and-over crowd after 9 p.m.

There are no casinos on any Disney ship, but in Azure, the nightclub, you will find late-night games with a naughty edge, and variety entertainment that on our sailing included a standup comedian, and a singer and impressionist who blew us away. The impressionist performed another, earlier show the next day for kids as well.

Disney Wonder Bars and Lounges

Adult beverages are available around the ship, and specialty cocktails are offered on the main dining dinner menus each night. There are always kid cocktails as well -- usually frozen concoctions made with ice cream. But if you're looking for a mature place to relax and unwind, head to Deck 3 forward, where most of Wonder's bars and lounges are grouped in a sleek 18-plus space called After Hours.

Promenade Lounge (Deck 3): For a general use lounge, we found Promenade to be an attractive and inviting space, also very much Art Deco. The bar, with eight cushioned stools, is surrounded by light maple wood and the velvet chairs are dandelion yellow. The lighting looks like stained glass with yellow and blue squares. There is a small stage, dance floor and piano here for live music. Most arts and crafts and demos are held here throughout the cruise. A small station to the right of the bar offers snacks throughout the day and late at night, like chips and salsa.

Crown & Fin Pub (Deck 3): The creators of this bar, which Disney refers to as a "Proper English Pub," drew inspiration from every Disney film that has taken place in London or England over the years, so much so that you can make a game of finding all the hidden memorabilia. (We'll give you a hint: There's a certain someone's umbrella on a shelf near the front door.) The English decor is on point, from obvious artwork of the Queen, to more subtle touches like an old-looking radiator. There's tons of flat-screen TVs playing the latest sports games, so no worries about missing your NFL Sunday football. Trivia, board games, darts, backgammon/chess sets and other amusements also pass the time. It's a fun bar, but we were surprised to find that the heart and soul of any authentic British pub -- the beer -- was seriously lacking. The one British beer on tap -- Newcastle -- was out for our entire cruise, along with Guinness and a few others. There are a variety of bottled beers, but they cost a bit more. The bar's own brew -- Crown & Fin -- was just OK, but it does come with a try at the spinning wheel -- if you land on the right spot, you get a free 5 oz. taster.

**Cadillac Lounge (Deck 3): **If you think this spot is designed just for car enthusiasts, think again. This bar is glossy and sophisticated. The back of the bar features the grill of a car (presumably a Caddy), the tables are styled around tires and hub caps and the sofas and chairs feature stitched leather Cadillac seating. It's a vestige leftover from the days of when the adults-only area on the ship was known as Route 66. Cadillac Lounge is a good place onboard for bourbon or a cocktail and some live piano music. A lot of the extra-fee tastings are held here throughout the cruise.

Azure (Deck 3): At first glance, Disney Wonder's nightclub seems a blank slate with bare white walls, but lighting effects transform the space depending on what it's being used for. Azure, used for activities and shows throughout the day, has a subtle marine theme with a coral partition, crests of waves carved from the wall, LED chandeliers that resemble jellyfish and a nautilus pattern in the carpet. Azure does many jobs, hosting information sessions, family dance parties, game shows for adults, bingo sessions, performers from comedians to singers and DJ'd music sets. As such, it's open to anyone during the day, but strictly 18-plus after 9. Drinks are flashy -- literally; one comes with a glowing ice cube, another with a bracelet made from acai seeds. Azure is open the latest of any bar aboard, until 1 or 2 a.m.

D Lounge (Deck 4): D Lounge is the family lounge; it's a modern-looking space with a stage for trivia, karaoke and games. There are light wooden tables and chairs, cushioned bench seating along the wall and a small bar with five chairs tucked to one side. Drinks are served here only during showtimes. If you look closely, the carpet tells a story.

**Preludes (Deck 4): **Wrapping the lobby of the Walt Disney Theatre, Preludes is a counter that provides all the snacks, drinks (both alcoholic and soft drinks), popcorn and cups shaped like Star Wars' BB-8 that one can manage.

**Signals (Deck 9): **This outdoor bar with a few stools as well as wooden tables and chairs is the place to grab a colada while hanging around the Quiet Cove pool and sun deck.

Sully's Sips (Deck 9): Next to the self-serve ice cream (Eye Scream) on the pool deck, Sully's is where you can grab a blended smoothie or the drink of the day.

**Pinocchio's Pizzeria (Deck 9): **Yes, there's a bar here. No, our noses aren't growing.

**Cove Cafe (Deck 9): **Cove Cafe is an adults-only coffee and wine bar (but offers a full bar menu) with lounge space on Decks 9 and 10. There's even a specialty iced tea menu. All drinks incur a charge, but the case of baked goodies -- peanut butter-chocolate brownies and lemon cake -- is dangerously free. It's the only two-level version of this cafe in the Disney fleet; surrounded by glass, it's a great space to gaze out, especially during Alaska sailings. There's plenty of seating and some electrical outlets for those on laptops or other devices. A few shelves' worth of current magazines and books are available, and since Disney's ships do not have libraries, this is the place to come for extra reading material. The only caveat: The material must remain at the cafe, which is inconvenient if you begin a good book and can't spend the day with it on Castaway Cay.

**Concierge Lounge (Deck 10): ** An exclusive lounge for passengers booked in Concierge suites with indoor and outdoor space, you'll find complimentary drinks and canapes provided throughout the day in this lounge.

Disney Wonder Outside Recreation

For a medium-sized ship, Disney Wonder has a number of pool and splash areas, and they're nothing to scoff at. (Kids must be toilet trained to use the pools.) Another nice feature is the presence of lifeguards. There are also complimentary pool safety vests in a variety of sizes for swimmers who are still unsure of their skills. And, yes, the pools are heated.

Goofy's Family Pool, midship on Deck 9, is in the center of the pool deck action, with a stage and FunnelVision TV directly in front and pizza and ice cream just behind the pool area. The pool is 4 feet deep, and children 12 and under require direct adult supervision. The pool is usually open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are also two small hot tubs on either side of the pool, and we saw plenty of kids enjoying them with their family.

For the adults, the Quiet Cove Pool is an 18-and-over oasis. The area, located forward on Deck 9, is notably quieter than the rest of the ship, and the pool feels impressively large for a cruise ship (larger than Goofy's Pool, anyway). The rectangular pool overflows onto a platform where sunbathers can relax while soaking in shallow water, maybe sipping the drink of the day. There are two hot tubs on either side and the Signals bar is just behind. The adult pool is usually open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Water Slides and Splash Areas on Disney Wonder

The Twist 'n' Spout water slide is a hit, with a steady stream of kids spiraling down its yellow funnel. The entrance is on Deck 10, and sliders make their way down to Deck 9. There are a few requirements to ride: You must be at least 38 inches tall, toilet trained and able to follow all directions (no selfie sticks!).

The AquaLab splash and play area is near the back of Deck 9, just in front of the Cabanas buffet. The theme for the area is the failed science experiments of Donald Duck's nephews; these are brought to life with spraying boilers and dumping buckets. A small swimming pool is located just off the splash area. While little ones are sure to love this area, it's only for kids who are toilet trained -- no swim diapers allowed. Children must be supervised at all times here; the area is typically open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For the littlest cruisers who aren't yet toilet trained, Dory's Reef provides a lovely enclosed splash area for babies and toddlers up to 3 years old. Located just behind AquaLab on Deck 9, this small area features figures of forgetful Dory and Pearl, a baby pink octopus, both from the "Finding Nemo" franchise. Wonder is the only Disney ship with this space. Dory's Reef is open the same hours as the other kids' pools and splash areas -- from about 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Wide World of Sports Deck is near the top of the ship, on Deck 10 forward. The two or three times we came by, there was always a basketball game happening in the court with both kids and adults.

Shuffleboard and the jogging track are located on Deck 4; it's three laps to make a mile on the track.

Sun Decks on Disney Wonder

There are about four rows of blue deck chairs on either side of the family pool, and to the right of the AquaLab. The chairs make a good home base, but if you're looking to actually take a nap, it might be hard with the TV or DJ music blaring and kids playing.

Quiet Cove is the place to come for peace and quiet. About 50 tan padded loungers surround the pool here. You must be 18 to enter.

Services, Shops and Wi-Fi on Disney Wonder

he guest services and port shopping (shore excursion) desks are located off the main lobby on Deck 3. The back walls of the desks reflect the atrium's Little Mermaid motif, with murals of Prince Eric on the beach and King Triton presenting the ports, lit up in framed posters.

Also on Deck 3, in front of the Promenade Lounge, is the Connect@Sea desk, which helps cruisers get online. Packages are based on megabytes. Some cruisers commented that their preteens with a serious internet addiction were starting to go nuts without cheap and reliable access (we also found that the internet was spotty); whether this is a conscious decision intended to force families to spend more time together offline, or simply that Disney is one step behind the rest of the cruise industry when it comes to high-speed internet, we aren't sure. The Disney Cruise Line app, which is free to download, works off the ship's intranet and offers free messaging. It's excellent. We used the app constantly to track down activities or to easily snag a glance at deck plans.

One deck above, on Deck 4, are desks dedicated to the Disney Vacation Club and vacation planning. Also on Deck 4, midship, you'll find the Art Gallery, with a wall of Princess Elsa in oil paint and Peter Pan flying high above London, made to look like a Kinkade. There are no art auctions like you find on other cruise lines that we are aware of, but the sales desk is open from about 1 to 4 in the afternoon and 7 to 9 in the evening.

Shutters is the photo center and portrait studio on Deck 4, aft. Touch-screen kiosks take a simple tap of your Key to the World cruise card to make all your photos magically appear on the screen. A few accessories -- like frames and camera cases -- are sold at the desk here. A separate studio for private family portraits is just off the photo center. Portraits are made by appointment, but Shutters is open from about 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., daily.

Disney is a master of merchandising, and there are five stores onboard from which to buy everything from pirate gear to Star Wars memorabilia. (Just remember, shops are only open away from port.) In Sea Treasures, on Deck 3, you'll find a small shop dedicated to a galaxy far, far away. Mickey's Mainsail and White Caps are across from one another on Deck 4, just outside the Walt Disney Theatre. Mickey's is the one-stop shop for the latest Disney merchandise and also themed souvenirs during the holidays. White Caps sells apparel and accessories for adults, from simple nautical-themed hoodies to Dooney & Bourke handbags with Disney designs.

Quacks, on Deck 9, is a bit hidden, even out on the pool deck. It looks like just a giant round pillar, except when it's open, and then reveals a tiny round shop selling knick-knacks. Also on the pool deck is a chair for hairbraiding. Braiding is by appointment only, open for a few hours each day.

Also a bit hidden, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is located on Deck 10 (you can only get there via the forward staircase) -- look for the jeweled steps that say "magical transformations await." The boutique resembles a high-end shop and salon. The store is open 9 to 9 most days, but requires appointments in advance; it's popular, especially with princesses. Also save your money as these makeovers are expensive.

Laundry and dry cleaning are available onboard, and self-service launderettes (open 24 hours a day) can be found on Decks 2, 6 and 7. You can use your Key to the World card to purchase detergent and dryer sheets, and operate washers and dryers for a small fee. Use of ironing equipment is complimentary.

Smoking areas can be found on the forward port side of Deck 9 and Deck 4 starboard side.

The dining experience on Disney Wonder is themed, much like everything else onboard. The soft-serve station isn't just ice cream. It's Eye Scream, inspired by Mike, a character from "Monsters, Inc." Opposite Eye Scream is Sully's Sips, a smoothie station featuring another main character from the film franchise. Cabanas, the buffet, is bright with beach blanket-colored umbrellas and napkins. New-to-the-fleet  restaurant Tiana's Place, located on Deck 3 aft, transports cruisers to the French Quarter of New Orleans for a jazzy supper club experience straight out of "The Princess and the Frog." And Triton's and Animator's Palate, the other main dining rooms, take you under the sea and behind the scenes of your favorite animations, respectively. Even Palo, the adults-only specialty restaurant, eschews the traditional Italian ambiance to specifically transport you to the romance of Venice.

Food quality in the main dining rooms aboard Disney Wonder has improved dramatically since our last outing on the ship. The star here is clearly Tiana's Place, with its southern flavors and authentic gumbo, shrimp and grits, and Cajun-inspired dishes. Is it haute cuisine? No. Is it better than average? Absolutely.

Plus, children, who make up a third of all cruisers onboard, are not likely to mind the quality of the food as they dive into their chicken nuggets or cheeseburgers -- or escargot. Let's face it -- a cruise is the best time to try something new, and Disney's warm and friendly wait staff are all too happy to oblige.

Disney is unique in offering what it calls "Rotational Dining," meaning passengers rotate through the three main dining rooms over the course of their cruise. The best part about this is that your servers rotate with you, remembering details like drink orders and building a report with the kiddos; just two reasons this setup works well for the cruise line. The order of restaurants is also listed in your Disney Navigataor app once you embark (it was formerly abbreviated on your Key to the World cruise card, but no more).

Disney has also introduced new character parades in each dining room in response to COVID-19 restrictions, in order to give the little ones more face time with their favorite characters. Character appearances were formerly limited strictly to The Animator's Palate, but the new parades were a hit with cruisers young and old on our recent Western Caribbean sailing.

Regarding dietary restrictions, Disney takes them very seriously. A tablemate with a gluten allergy was presented with his own bread each evening, and his order was taken on a special slip, so it would never be confused with other meals. It's best to mention any allergies or preferences to your servers on the first night; we found these requests were handled with precision. Symbols on all menus designate gluten- and dairy-free items.

Free Dining on Disney Wonder

Main Dining

There are three main restaurants on Disney Wonder, each offering a different set menu. However, an always-available menu of grilled sirloin steak, roast chicken breast, baked salmon and another light option are offered nightly in all three. Seatings are at 5:45 or 8:15 p.m. every night for all main dining venues. Breakfast and lunch are available every day as a buffet (no longer self-serve) in Cabanas on Deck 9, or a sit down, la carte option in Triton's on Deck 3 midship. Light morning and afternoon snack options are offered at Daisy's de Lites on the Lido Deck, and casual pool deck fare can be found at Pete's Boiler Bites at the base of the aft funnel.

Tiana's Place

For dinner, authentic Cajun flavors reign: boudin sausage, pickled Gulf shrimp, Creole-style half chicken or Cajun-spiced sea bass on shrimp jambalaya. Dessert features delicious beignets but, of course, along with heavenly bread pudding, a bananas Foster sundae and pecan tart. (Tip: We heard someone say you could order beignets in any main dining venue for dessert, if requested.)

New Orleans-themed cocktails and a rum-tasting flight are offered. We appreciated that the beers are actually Louisiana based, including a favorite, Abita. All kids' nonalcoholic cocktails can be served with a glowing Raymond the firefly from "The Princess and the Frog."

As always, you'll find Disney in the details: Pay attention to the plates throughout the course of your meal; take a look at the wall behind the serving station if you get a chance and give your dessert menu a second look (or touch).

And, if you haven't had a healthy dose of New Orleans, head over to the adjacent French Quarter Lounge for more Southern nightcaps -- served up in the lounge or the mock-up New Orleans streetcar at the aft-end of the lounge.

Triton's (Deck 3): Named for King Triton, the father of Ariel in "The Little Mermaid," this underwater-themed main dining room does triple duty as the place to enjoy a sit-down breakfast (8 to 9:30 a.m.), lunch (noon to 1:30 p.m.) and dinner.

Metalwork on the windows and chair backs echo the trident held by the king of the sea, but the most impressive feature is a mural of Triton and Ariel along the back wall of the restaurant that consists of about 200,000 Italian mosaic tiles, which amazingly took just five days to install.

Breakfast has plenty of coffee, tea and juice, pastries, egg dishes (including eggs Benedict), cereals, fruit and even blended yogurt parfaits that are more like smoothies. A waffle sandwich stuffed with dulce de leche is available for the indulgent, buckwheat crepes for the health conscious. The kids' menu is creative; we were tempted to order the pancake with peanut butter swirl and jelly drizzle.

Unlike the other main dining venues, the menus in Triton's rotate daily for lunch and dinner, and also feature nightly themes like island fusion, French and Pirate Night. Along with the bread service, there's always a choice of about four appetizers, soups and salads, and five main courses, with two vegetarian options. Mateys can expect apps like shrimp cocktail or crab cakes and entrees like a cilantro-marinated Caribbean grouper, a lamb shank or jerk chicken. Specialty themed cocktails are recommended for the adults (the Captain's Treasure includes Absolut Mandarin, Peach Schnapps and orange juice). On Pirate Night an impressive six desserts were on the menu, from banana bread and rum-soaked chocolate cake to an ice cream sundae and macadamia cheesecake tart.

Animator's Palate

Cabanas (Deck 9): The buffet onboard is at the back of the ship, and has plenty of places to sit; seating is also offered outdoors overlooking the wake. If you've sailed a Disney ship before, you'll recognize the buffet, which is now a uniform setup fleetwide. One long counter wraps around the buffet, eventually repeating food stations on the other side.

Breakfast and lunch are served here, though dinner service will likely come back as ships fill up following the COVID-19 pandemic. On offer are staples like omelets, fruit, sugary cereal, bacon and Mickey-shaped waffles in the morning; fish with Caribbean salsa, a carving station, macaroni, a salad bar, Indian dishes and more can be found in the afternoons.

Formerly a self-serve setup, dishes in Cabanas are now served by staff members -- including beverages that include complimentary juices and coffee. You can have as much or as little as you'd like, but they'll do all the tong handling for you.

Pinocchio's Pizzeria (Deck 9): You can grab a slice just behind Goofy's Family Pool. Choose from thin-crust pepperoni, Hawaiian, vegetable, plain and other specialty pizzas of the moment. It's seriously satisfying pizza -- the kind you had as a kid and know and love.

Pete's Boiler Bites (Deck 9): Located in front of the water slide, Pete's is where you can grab a burger, hot dogs, fries or chicken tenders, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. A special daily offering is also featured, such as a spicy chicken burger or a fish burger. On the port side, a shawarma station is set up and proved popular with passengers on our sailing.

Daisy's de Lites (Deck 9): Located just outside of Cabanas, Daisy's offers light grab-and-go snacks throughout the day, including pastries and an oatmeal bar in the morning (from 7 to 9 a.m.), and salads and gyros in the afternoon (from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

Room Service; a la carte: The room service menu can be found on Disney's Navigator app. Inside, you'll find complimentary items like soup, salad, a cheese plate, chicken wings, hot dog, hamburgers, pizzas, cookies and sandwiches. Snacks like popcorn, cashews and M&Ms are available for purchase, along with drinks.

Specialty Restaurants and Dining on Disney Wonder

Be sure to peek into the intimate private dining room for 14 tucked away in the back of the restaurant; here you'll find a gorgeous wall-sized mosaic of a gondolier in Venice. The room is typically reserved by groups; however, if it has not been reserved, passengers can come on the day they board and make a reservation, even if with a group smaller than the room can hold.

Dinner begins with an antipasti platter arranged tableside by your server. For your appetizer you'll need to choose between crispy calamari with hot peppers and dipping sauces or gnocchi that melts in your mouth, among other choices. Our sea scallop entree came with an additional pour of black truffle sauce and we tried to put it on everything; the Dover sole was expertly deboned -- once again, tableside. Your server will ask if you're interested in the souffle, which takes time to prepare, but it's worth it. We forfeited traditional chocolate for the amaretto flavor on special; it was rich and made even more decadent with the vanilla bean gelato and sauce it's paired with. Other desserts include a limoncello tart.

Special touches include a sorbet palate-cleanser topped with a blueberry, a frozen shot of limoncello after your meal and a note the following day from your server, thanking you for visiting.

Brunch in Palo is held on a sea day, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and is still reserved for passengers 18 and older. Hot items like fish and egg dishes are supplemented with a spread of meats and cheeses. Brunch now includes a complimentary glass of sparkling wine or a mimosa; bring your appetite -- our sea day brunch left us stuffed until our late-seating dinner. The surprise winner here: go for the Chicken Parmesan. You won't regret it.

Another Palo hidden gem: the bar seating area that wraps attractively around the center of the room. Stop in and explore the dining venue's superb list of vintage wines -- no reservation required.

TIANA’S PLACE

Long before  The Princess and the Frog , The Walt Disney Company has been inextricably linked to the fun and flavor of New Orleans. Out of all of Disney’s restaurants inspired by The Big Easy , Tiana’s Place may well be their finest attempt at capturing the romantic carefree attitude of the city.

Not only will diners be graced by the presence of the restaurant’s namesake as she mingles, but Tiana also introduces the stylings of her in-house band each night. While the musical accompaniment quickly turns this culinary experience into a high-energy party, things don’t get so out of control that cruisers can’t enjoy casual conversations with their vacation families. Unless, of course, a trumpet-playing alligator makes a special appearance, in which case Tiana’s guests may find themselves caught up in a surprise conga line.

TRITON’S

Diners will become immersed in the underwater world of  The Little Mermaid  inside this elegant restaurant named after King Triton, Ariel’s father. Enjoy classic American cooking for breakfast and lunch and continental cuisine with a French flair for dinner.

The atrium statue is Ariel and sits just outside the restaurant’s entrance. Guests will journey into a grand ballroom that is reminiscent of the opulent sea palace of King Triton festooned with a dazzling Art Deco theme. The entire space is brimming with ornate chandeliers, stained glass, sea-inspired architectural flourishes, and a sweeping mural of Ariel and her father. Triton’s serves up a regal atmosphere that guests of all ages are sure to admire.

ANIMATOR’S PALATE

Guests will be drawn into a spacious dining room that evokes a real-life, hand-drawn scene in black and white. Animator’s Palate boasts phenomenal architectural design, where proportions bend and slant suddenly and sketches showcasing Disney characters and scenes from Disney and Disney·Pixar films adorn the walls around the space.

Take in the progression of animation from pencil test to ink-and-paint with the Drawn to Magic show. You’ll follow a hero’s storytelling journey through Disney and Pixar animation, where wishing upon a star paves the way for happily-ever-after. In an emotional finale, the black-and-white interior of the restaurant is transformed with splashes of vibrant color. If you are wanting to enjoy dinner at Palo during your cruise, we recommend not doing it on your Animator’s Palate night!

With its 270-degree ocean view from high atop the ship, Palo has the loveliest view of all restaurants on the ship. Palo is for adults 18 and over only, and reservations are necessary and required. This restaurant features outstanding Northern Italian cuisine prepared to order.

Guests may only book ONE dinner at Palo in advance, however for guests that make an online reservation for a Palo Dinner for the very first night of their Disney cruise; they may also reserve a second Palo and/or Remy on one other night during their cruise.

We highly recommend the brunch at Palo. They are not serving a buffet as they have in the past, but they offer a prix fixe menu with many of the same items repeat cruisers know and love.

The view from Palo is spectacular due to the restaurant’s location on the ship, but please keep in mind that the view is only “viewable” before sunset; it’s dark out there in the middle of the ocean. Around the perimeter of Palo is a walkway, which at night is illuminated by bright lights. After sunset, the only things visible from Palo are those bright lights and a reflection of the interior of the restaurant. We would certainly not let this deter us from taking an available reservation at a later time, but we like to let guests know that an earlier reservation is often easier to get and offers the addition of the spectacular view and sunset.

DISNEY WONDER ENTERTAINMENT

Entertainment aboard the Disney Wonder is offered in unique settings, and all options are designed to fill your days at sea with memorable experiences. Guests can watch stage shows in the beautiful Walt Disney Theatre, first-run movies in the Buena Vista Theatre, and take part in character meet and greets across the ship.

Adults Only

Nightclubs & Lounges on the Disney Wonder bring the night to life with music, dancing and socializing. From swanky to sporty, low key to high energy, you’ll find a hangout you’ll love amid the ship’s “adults-only at night” entertainment district, After Hours.

The clubs in this location are Cadillac Lounge, Crown & Fin Pub, and Azure, and it’s important to note that alcoholic beverages are not included with your cruise; there will be a separate charge for those.

Cadillac Lounge

An intimate piano bar, Cadillac Lounge features a full bar and recalls the glorious heyday of the Rat Pack at their peak in Hollywood in the late 1950s. Decked out with luxurious dark wood walls, low-lit fiber-optic city street murals, and custom chrome and alabaster headlight fixtures on the ceiling, the nightclub provides a romantic atmosphere for adults and couples looking to park themselves amid a more relaxed and upscale setting. Overstuffed armchairs, large porthole windows, and a bucket-seat bar add to the cozy setting.

Crown & Fin Pub

When you step inside the Crown & Fin Pub, you’ll feel like you’re visiting a traditional village tavern that’s located right in the heart of England.

With dark woods, plush leather furniture, brass accents, and a red tin ceiling, the rustic ambiance of Crown & Fin Pub is warm and nostalgic, inviting visitors to pull up a chair, relax and gather for an evening of great conversation, hearty laughs and delicious libations. If you look closely, you’ll discover more than a few nods to classic Disney films set in and around the British Isles, including  Mary Poppins ,  101 Dalmatians , and  Peter Pan , in addition to a sea of football posters on the walls.

Immersive ocean-themed décor ensures Azure overflows with the mystery of the deep nightly.

Azure celebrates the breathtaking beauty of the big blue and invites guests into a trendy nightclub that was designed to look like the ocean. The lounge has a bar, dance floor, and plenty of seating and features flowing, curvy walls reminiscent of the ever-changing current. Adding to the underwater tone, every table, chair, material, and pattern hints at the living things found under the sea—including coral, sea fans, and nautilus shells—while vibrant colors amid the venue glimmer and glow long into the night.

Adults can escape to the Cove Café for specialty drinks, coffee beverage offerings, or tea throughout the day amidst laid-back sophistication and a touch of tropical bliss. In the evenings, guests can unwind while socializing and enjoying cocktails, wine, or a light bite. Adult beverage tastings are also available at select times for an additional fee.

Senses Spa & Salon sports a contemporary design and offers a variety of services.

The Rejuvenation Spa offers an array of cosmetic body and facial treatments, and the Chill Spa caters specifically to teens ages 13 to 17.

For the Whole Family

The D Lounge is the ship’s main hangout for games, dance parties, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities.

The “it’s a small world” nursery, based on the theme park attraction, is the perfect place for your little ones to play while you enjoy a grownups’ night out.

The Oceaneer Club, one of the areas for children age 3-12, has 4 separate areas that are themed as a Andy’s Room (from Toy Story ), the MARVEL Super Hero Academy, Disney Junior, and Frozen  Adventures.

Kids can swoop into the top-secret command post of S.H.I.E.L.D. and wield the weaponry of their favorite Avengers. They can also enjoy arts and crafts, play video games or summon their inner strength during surprise Super Hero visits.

Inspired by Disney’s  Peter Pan , the main hub of The Oceaneer Lab leads to themed “lands” and features multiple flat-screen TVs, a dance floor, reading nook, lounge area with beanbags and stage for interactive games and special Disney Character appearances. Kids can also conduct experiments, develop culinary skills and engage in fascinating activities at the Oceaneer Lab’s workshop and science laboratory.

Edge is an interactive space that for tweens ages 11-14 and was designed to look like an old boiler room. High-tech gaming stations, a dance floor, TV, arts and crafts, karaoke, and scavenger hunts will keep them busy for hours. Kids ages 3-12 can visit Deck 10 for a Princess or Royal Knight makeover (Pirate makeovers will be available for all ages on Pirate Night).

Pools and Water Features:

Huey, Dewey, and Louie have come up with a whole slew of water contraptions whose sole purpose is to drench the entire family. At the AquaLab on Deck 9 of the Disney Wonder, Donald Duck’s crafty nephews have concocted a series of water-logged “experiments” – pop jets, geysers, and bubblers amid a 1,800-square-foot recreation space.

Interactive elements designed by the 3 ducklings include:

• Pouring paint cans, raining showerheads, pop jets, and geysers that spray little ones as they play
• Leaky pipes
• Rotating wheels and levers
• Donald’s Boiler, where pushing buttons may cause Donald to blow his top, drenching everyone

Twist ‘n’ Spout, the double-looping waterslide on the top deck, offers kids a little excitement while cooling down. Guests must be 38″ or taller to ride this attraction.

An entertaining, 400-square-foot splash deck dedicated to infants and toddlers 3 years of age and under, Dory’s Reef overflows with fountains, bubblers, pop jets, and a water curtain inspired by the East Australian Current—plus some memorable characters from the hit Disney movie  Finding Dory .

Fitness centers aboard Disney ships are expansive, state-of-the-art exercise clubs that offer stunning ocean views. Each facility features everything you need to work out while at sea, including:

Inside The Haunted Mansion Parlor Coming to the Disney Treasure

Since opening its foreboding front doors at  Disneyland Park  in 1969,  the Haunted Mansion  and the lore surrounding it has captured the mortal hearts of Disney Parks goers, inspiring three subsequent attractions, multiple film adaptations, merchandise lines and plans for a soon-to-debut bar onboard the  Disney Treasure . Plans for  the Haunted Mansion Parlor  will honor more than five decades of fandom and introduce the world to the next chapter of the Haunted Mansion saga. 

Disney Cruise Line and Disney Imagineers will harness the power of design to convey the nostalgia of the original attraction alongside a new nautical storyline. The venue will resemble a well-appointed ship parlor, which once belonged to a  jovial sea captain  and his strange, but captivating fiancé. With so many rumors swirling about, it’s hard to say what happened to the happy couple following their sudden and mysterious disappearances – but our most discerning guests may glean the truth by deciphering clues hidden around the bar. 

As part of the Halfway to Halloween celebration here on the  Disney Parks Blog , it’s my ghoulish delight to be your guide to unlocking a few of Haunted Mansion Parlor’s secrets. 

Something Seems Fishy About This Aquarium 

When plans for the original Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland were well underway, celebrated Disney Imagineer  Rolly Crump  proposed a creative concept for a “Museum of the Weird” exhibit. As the final design took shape, many of Rolly’s initial ideas were realized throughout the attraction. However, a few of his concepts remained in the vault, living on thanks to dedicated fans and Disney historians. One such concept was a mysterious aquarium, filled with ghost fish. More than fifty years later, the sketch Rolly developed was referenced by a new generation of Disney Imagineers to create a modern “Aquarium with Ghost Fish” for the Haunted Mansion Parlor.

Blending nostalgia with a fresh layer of lore, the aquarium will fold into the curious backstory of the parlor’s former sea captain owner. Legends passed down from The Captain’s devoted crew recount how he was last seen heading to his parlor for a special meal prepared by his betrothed. All that remained after The Captain and his bride seemingly vanished was his hat, which was found floating in the aquarium tank. Perhaps his disappearance grants a new meaning to “fish food.”

An Eerie Art Collection 

The Haunted Mansion Parlor’s eerie portrait gallery will depict some of the wandering souls that have taken up residence onboard the Disney Treasure. The collection of works will be reminiscent of the quintessential paintings inside the Haunted Mansion attraction, mimicking the art stylings used by Disney Imagineers in 1969. The portrait gallery will also incorporate present-day technologies to allow the ghostly residents to entertain guests in new ways. 

I’m delighted to introduce you to a few of the happy haunts that will call the Disney Treasure home…

The concept for The Mariner was created by famed Disney animator Marc Davis. The portrait now occupies the halls of the attractions in Walt Disney World Resort  and  Tokyo Disney Resort . The Mariner’s story will be taken to new depths when he takes his place in the Haunted Mansion Parlor on the Disney Treasure and continues to uphold Marc Davis’ impactful legacy.

A distinguished portrait of the good-humored sea captain will also grace the walls of the Haunted Mansion Parlor. His lifelong dream of serving on a luxury ocean liner was cut short after his untimely demise, but his merry soul has lingered on in his private parlor.  

The likeness of The Captain’s enigmatic bride-to-be will take cues from Marc Davis’ iconic “cat lady” concept, which was also featured in the original attraction. Inside the Haunted Mansion Parlor, her portrait will flicker to reveal her true form and perhaps, her true intentions.  

Tales of the doomed couple’s first encounter all began when The Captain received a dramatic distress transmission from another vessel. He wasted no time in altering his course to aid in the rescue, but as he neared the source of the call, he found only a mangled wreckage and a lone survivor – a woman floating amongst the debris. With bright green eyes, chestnut hair and a golden key hanging about her neck, it is no wonder that The Captain was immediately taken by her beauty. The pair became inseparable and were soon engaged to be wed. 

A Ghostly Line of Drinkware 

The portraits inside Haunted Mansion Parlor will also lend inspiration to a Disney Cruise Line-exclusive commemorative mug collection that will debut onboard the Disney Treasure. The ceramic mugs will appear to be carved from the worn wooden planks of a ghost ship. These early sketches and models illustrate the first in a series coming to the Disney Treasure – one inspired by The Mariner and other by The Captain’s bride.

Disney Cruise Line names its newest cruise ship

I t was bound to happen sometime, but Disney Cruise Line waited until its last of three new sister ships to name one Disney Destiny.

The sister ship to Disney Wish, which debuted out of Port Canaveral in 2022 and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure arriving in Central Florida this December, the third ship in what was originally called the Trident class had its keel laying ceremony Wednesday at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

It won’t start sailing until 2025, and its home port has yet to be named, but among the details revealed for what will be the eighth ship in the cruise line’s fleet was the theme of the vessel, “Heroes & Villains.”

As such, the filigree artwork for the bow will be of Minnie Mouse wearing a superhero-style outfit complete with a cape.

The cruise line said among the characters from which it will mine features on board will be classic Disney animation films, “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney of course owns plenty of good vs. evil intellectual property including Star Wars and Marvel.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager for the cruise line, in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising.”

Just like Disney Wish and Treasure, Disney Destiny will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

All three are the 144,000 gross-ton, 1,254-stateroom vessels but still targeting the 4,000-passenger capacity of its older ships, 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Fantasy. The line’s first ships are the smaller Disney Magic that debuted in 1998 and Disney Wonder in 1999. They come in at 84,000 gross tons with 875 staterooms.

The line also is finishing construction for an Asia-bound cruise ship named Disney Adventure that will be the largest in the fleet at 208,000 gross tons.

Disney Wish became the line’s first new ship in more than a decade. It continues to do short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings while Disney Treasure will pick up seven-night trips to the Caribbean.
