21 of the Best Things to Do At The Docklands
Here are our top 21 things to do in Docklands Melbourne. Which of these Docklands attractions and activities will you discover first?
1) Sail Back In Time Onboard The Polly Woodside
Built in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the Polly Woodside was first launched way back in 1885 and was used as a cargo vessel to carry coal and wheat.
This beautiful tall ship has been restored to its former glory and can now be found at Melbourne’s South Wharf.
At over 30 metres in height and around 70 in length, you literally cannot miss the Polly when visiting this part of Melbourne.
Exploring the history of this ship is one of the top things to do in the Dockland area, and it suits visitors of all ages – our grandson loved it.
Visitors can go onboard to imagine what sailing the seven seas was really like, and also learn about maritime life at the museum here.
You can choose between two different experiences when visiting the Polly Woodside. The Open Day held on the first Sunday of the month allows you to explore at your own pace or you can choose to take a guided tour (45 -60 minutes).
The third Sunday of the month is Pirate Day! Two sessions are held throughout the day and visitors are encouraged to dress up as a pirate for Fashions on the Plank.
Each session has the following activities:
- Pirate’s Tattoo (washable!) and Pirate Name
- Scrub the Deck and Rope Swing
- Fashions On The Plank
- Treasure Hunt
- Craft activities and Reading Corner

2) Experience Melbourne On A Yarra River Cruise
Seeing any city from the water always gives you a unique perspective. One of the highlights of any visit to the Docklands in Victoria is a boat cruise on the Yarra River. It’s a fun and relaxing way to spend your time too.
Cruises typically last for an hour or two and take in many of the Melbourne landmarks you’ll want to see, such as Flinders Street Station.
If you like you can celebrate a special occasion with a party cruise, or enjoy a dinner or sunset trip. You can even choose to Captain your own self-drive boat – no boat licence is required.
3) Paddle The Yarra On A Sunset & Dinner Kayak Tour
Another way to take to the water at the Docklands is to go kayaking on the Yarra River at sunset. From your kayak, Melbourne viewed as the sun goes down is a magical sight you won’t want to miss.
These tours are highly recommended as well as being the most popular kayaking tour of the city. The tour lasts for around three hours and includes a fish and chip dinner, views of the Bolte Bridge and the Crown Casino’s stunning nighttime displays.
No kayaking experience is necessary and in fact, the Yarra River is a great spot for first-time kayakers. Children aged 12 plus can take part as long as they’re accompanied by an adult.
The tour starts with a safety briefing and a lesson in paddling technique. And guides are with you offering support out on the water every “step” of the way.

4) Get Your Skates On At O’Brien Ice House
Wondering what to do in the Docklands area? Why don’t you get your skates on and hit this Melbourne ice rink for some ice skating?
It’s the biggest ice arena in Australia, so if you want to give skating a try there’s no better place to go.
The Melbourne Ice House at the Docklands offers ice skating classes so members of the public can benefit from expert tuition too.
If you have an adventurous streak, it may also be worth thinking about ice hockey.
Anyone aged 18 plus can join a game during the drop-in sessions, or kids, as well as adults, can enjoy messing about or training with Stick and Puck.
Tip: This is a cashless venue so bring your debit card. Discounts apply when you book online.

5) Take In A Game At Marvel Stadium
The Marvel Stadium – or Docklands Stadium – is a purpose-built centre for sporting fixtures and entertainment events.
This world-class stadium was completed in 2000 and cost over $450 million Australian dollars to build.
As well as being a major Melbourne AFL venue, the stadium is used for other sports, plus corporate and leisure events.
Docklands events such as concerts are also held at the Marvel Stadium, so why not see what’s on when you’re in the area?
If you truly want to experience life as a Melbourne local then attending an AFL game is as authentic as it gets. So, why not see what’s on when you’re in the area?
Teams using this as a home stadium include Carlton, Essendon, the Kangaroos, St Kilda, and the Western Bulldogs.

7) Wander The Docklands Waterfront
Take a Waterfront Wander to discover all that the Docklands area has to offer. You’ll also get great views of the Melbourne Yarra River en route.
It’s the ideal way to start your Docklands adventure, as you get an overview of the 200 hectare site while you walk.
Something to remember is that the Docklands development isn’t even scheduled for completion until around 2025. So, there’s lots more still to come.
Places of interest along the way include Adrian Mauriks’ Silence sculpture, seeing the options for Melbourne boat hire at NewQuay, Point Park, John Kelly’s Cow up a Tree art installation, the Webb Bridge, and Docklands Park.
You can find the Waterfront Wander map here.
8) Play Glow In The Dark Mini Golf
Mini golf is of course a classic game for grown-ups and children alike – but have any of you ever played glow-in-the-dark golf before? If not, GlowGolf Docklands offers a twist on this family favourite.
This Docklands mini golf venue is the only 18-hole mini golf venue in Australia offering glow-in-the-dark golf.
For players, things are made interesting due to the course featuring Australian icons, such as the outback dunny and special UV lighting.
You can also find one of the smallest bars on the Docklands waterfront here. And when I say small I mean small!
Called Le Bar European, it’s only licensed for 4 people, making it possibly the smallest bar in Australia if not the world.
Despite its size, I found the Tuscan decor inviting and it’s a nice cosy spot to enjoy a European beer or glass of wine.

In fact, the library is one of the city’s best-kept secrets.
At the Library at the Dock, you can grab some of the best coffee in the city when you need a caffeine boost, or simply unwind while reading a book, newspaper, or magazine.

11) Step Into A World Of Illusion At ArtVo Melbourne
ArtVo Docklands in Melbourne offers a contemporary take on the classic art gallery experience.
Here it’s all about optical illusion murals on a grand scale. And it’s actually more of a modern ‘trick art’ venue or immersive art museum than your average gallery.
This place is great fun for visitors of all ages – make sure everyone comes with a fully charged phone or camera!
The photo opportunities are endless, and allow visitors to merge seamlessly with what’s on display.
Across the 11 themed zones you can also find interactive sculptures.

The Docklands Public Art Walk takes place outdoors, so you might want to save this one for a sunny day.
Your self-guided art tour will take you to 36 outdoor works of art that are scattered across the city’s promenades, parks and buildings.
It usually takes a couple of hours to complete the walk fully, and again don’t forget your smartphone or camera.
The map is free to download and will lead the way – as well as explain what you’re seeing as you go along.
13) Drink Craft Beer At Urban Alley Brewery
At Urban Alley in the Docklands you can experience a working urban brewery – as well as sampling the fruits of the employees’ labour.

Food, drinks and a cool soundtrack await at this rooftop bar in the Docklands.
It’s the pick of the Docklands pubs when it comes to views from the 15th floor, and also doubles up as one of the best Melbourne Docklands restaurants.
One of the things I like best about this bar are the sweeping 180-degree views of the city skyline you can enjoy while sipping an expertly mixed drink.
The cocktail and food menus here are colourful and fresh and are designed for sharing and casual grazing.
Sunset House Where: 15th Floor Marriott Hotel, 15 Waterfront Way, Docklands 3008 When: Sunday, Monday – Thursday: 4 p.m – 9 p.m, Friday – Saturday 2.pm – 10 p.m Phone: (03) 8638 6000
15) Take The Portarlington Ferry To Victoria’s Hidden Gem
Port Phillip Ferries operates a Melbourne Docklands to Portarlington ferry service. This operates twice per day, and the trip takes around an hour and 10 minutes.
The cruise across the bay is enjoyable in itself, and after arrival, you can then explore this coastal and historic Bellarine Peninsula town as well as the nearby wineries.
Taking the ferry to Portarlington offers visitors to Melbourne an easy way to see an attractive Australian town by the sea – without the effort of driving or working out how to get there.
As well as beautiful views, the town is famous for fresh mussels, so be sure to try some during your day trip.
Click here for ferry tickets and times.
16) Hop On The Geelong Ferry To See The City By The Bay
As another alternative to Docklands boat hire, you can also take a ferry to Geelong from the Docklands in Melbourne.
It does take a little longer as the ferry travels via Portarlington, but at just over an hour and a half it is so worth it.
There’s heaps to do in Geelong once you get there, and of course, you get to enjoy a scenic trip across the water too.
Geelong waterfront is very popular with tourists and locals, and there’s plenty for grown-ups and kids to do once you arrive.
Here you can enjoy Eastern Beach and the promenade, the beautiful Geelong Botanical Gardens, as well as restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Once known as the West Melbourne Swamp, Docklands is a waterfront suburb of Melbourne . It soon developed into a harbour, and today it’s home to many business headquarters and top Melbourne attractions. Here are the 10 best things to do and see while exploring the area.
Discover urban art sculptures.
Contemporary art sculptures are practically everywhere around Docklands, just waiting to be discovered. These sculptures have become a strong identifier of the area, showcasing the creative part of not just Docklands but Melbourne as a whole. Each sculpture has its own theme, whether it is history and future, land and sea, or culture and technology; “Cow Up a Tree” was inspired by Australian floods, and “Continuum” symbolizes Docklands coming to life. Docklands is like a free, open-air gallery of urban art, and your only job is to walk around and enjoy it.

- 12 Things to do in Docklands, Melbourne
The Docklands is a neighbourhood in Melbourne filled with energy and a sense of modernity.
The local institutions are young but are by no means insignificant. For no other Melbournian neighbourhoods can say they host the world’s busiest multi-purpose stadium, that is for sure.
From the stadium to its restaurants, here is the list of things to do in Docklands, Melbourne.
Table of Contents
Marvel Stadium
It would be difficult to have mentioned the world’s busiest multi-purpose stadium and not make it the first attraction on this list.
Marvel Stadium , formerly The Etihad, reigns supreme in the Docklands skyline. Whilst corporate high-rises may stand taller, there is nothing more dominating than the 55,000-seat arena.
Calling itself a multi-purpose venue is no exaggeration either. Not only does the stadium retain tenancy from 6 professional sports teams – 5 AFL heavyweights and one of Melbourne’s two Twenty20 cricket outfits – but when sports are on hiatus, the Marvel also hosts some of the largest music acts on the planet. Previous headliners have been Foo Fighters, Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.
But sports are still the real crowd drawers in the Docklands area. AFL fans of Essendon, Carlton, Western Bulldogs, St Kilda, and North Melbourne all make the journey to the waterfront suburb each week to support their teams.
Since opening in the year 2000, over 42 million people have passed through the stadium’s gates. That’s 2 million a year – a seriously staggering figure.
Travellers finding themselves in and around the Docklands area must make attending an event at Marvel Stadium a priority – sport, music, or otherwise.
Mission to Seafarers Victoria
From Docklands’ premier contemporary landmark to perhaps one of its oldest.
Mission to Seafarers Victoria is a still-operating relic of Melbourne’s maritime history. In the heritage-listed facility, a community of volunteers provide much-needed services to those that find themselves far from home when working at sea. Mission to Seafarers continues to offer, as they have done for decades, physical and mental care to those that need it.
Alongside the vital work done, Mission to Seafarers Victoria also hosts a significant collection of stories and memorabilia from years of involvement within the maritime profession. Visitors to the establishment are strongly encouraged to explore the building and delve into its collections’ tales.
District Docklands
It makes sense that Docklands would have a generous offering of retail outlets, with it being an area of such modern development. Case and point: District Docklands.
The district is an open-air precinct hosting some of the highstreets’ top shopping and lifestyle outlets. It also has a significant number of restaurants and eateries.
Other District highlights are its resident ice arena and ArtVo, a gallery founded on the idea of interaction with its art.
Docklands Sunday Market
Now from high street retail haven to the independent, local market.
Every Sunday morning, Newquay Promenade hosts the Docklands Sunday Market , a place where local artisans go to showcase their wares – from unique clothing to handmade jewellery, accessories, and even food.
Travellers will struggle to find a better Sunday morning activity than meandering through this local market.
Urban Sculptures
Those looking for something else to do after perusing through the Sunday Market – especially those with a love and appreciation for art – should start themselves on the hunt for Docklands’ urban sculptures.
The Docklands area is renowned for having several contemporary art sculptures adorning its streets. So much so that the suburb has been likened to an open-air art gallery.
Cow in a Tree is one of the most famous pieces that decorate the Dockland streets. It is a sculpture resembling the moment when floodwater prompted a cow to balance on the branches of a tree.
Travellers wanting to visit Docklands’ sculptures can follow the ‘Public Art Walk Trail’ for a tour of all 36 pieces.
Sunset at Central Pier
There are few sights on this earth as wholesome and heart-warming as a sky-burning sunset. Central Pier at sundown is a great spot to do so.
Grab yourself a portion of fish and chips and migrate down to the pier before sunset. On a clear night, the sunset reflects and bounces off of the water.
Kayak Melbourne
If sitting on the pier during sunset is not quite memorable enough, how about you get out on the water?
Kayak Melbourne offer an evening kayak tour along the Yarra River. From sunset in Victoria Harbour to the Melbourne CBD and Fed Square, illuminated by light as night prevails.
The evening kayak tours are understandably more expensive than watching the sunset for free on the pier. That said, they make for a truly unique nighttime experience.
Corniche Lebanese
Good food awaits those who cross the Yarra.
Travellers can access a small strip of the Docklands area across the Yarra River via Webb Bridge. Those who make the walk will come across Coriche Restaurant , a Lebanese establishment well-regarded for its Mediterranean cuisine.
Corniche happily accommodates all dietary requirements, too.
Travellers wanting an authentic international dining experience should highlight Corniche on their Docklands map.
Ginger Leaf Thai
Back on the leading site of the Yarra is Ginger Leaf Thai, another international eatery that is renowned for its offering of authentic dishes. Ginger Leaf is also one of the cheaper restaurants within the somewhat upmarket Docklands area.
Find Ginger Leaf just south of the Marvel Stadium campus – an excellent location for pre, or post, AFL-game food.
Urban Alley Brewery
It seems that every Melbournian suburb must have a renowned brewery. Urban Alley is Docklands’.
You can find the Urban Alley Brewery and Brewpub within the reaches of District Docklands. It’s there that the establishment has been brewing its signature blonde ale since 2015. Along with a supporting cast of other quality beverages, that signature blonde ale has won Urban Alley over 14 internationally recognised awards.
‘Brewpub’ might be a little of an understatement too. Urban Alley can accommodate over 600 customers at a time within its premises, so think of it more like a beer hall.
Signature blonde ale? A pale Aussie ale? Perhaps a sour red ale? Or a punchy oatmeal stout? Urban Alley offers more than you could ever hope to try in one visit.
Docklands Park
Docklands Park is a landscaped area next to the Victoria Harbour featuring large grass fields and plenty of native flora.
With its offering of recreational sports spaces, there is no better place to try and replicate what you see at a game in the neighbouring Marvel Stadium.
Public barbecuing facilities also make the area an excellent spot for families to come together.
Last but not least, A25. Traditional artisan pizza.
Restaurants are easy to come by in Melbourne. But good restaurants? That’s a different story.
A25 puts itself firmly within the ring of good restaurants – serving handcrafted pizzas through traditional Italian cooking methods passed down through generations. The ingredients are top draw, too, with the restaurant focusing solely on small Italian artisan suppliers. In essence, quality is paramount at A25 .
Capitalise on A25’s offering Monday pizza deals and the Tuesday pasta deals to get the best value for your money.
Final Thoughts
For many, Docklands’ youth is what defines it. The contemporary art sculptures that mark its streets, or the respectively recent construction of shopping outlets like District Docklands – the prevalence of these entities exists as reminders of the area’s infancy compared to some of Melbourne’s more historical suburbs.
But modernity and youth do not mean the absence of spirit.
Few places in the city are as electric as Marvel Stadium during an AFL game or world-tour concert. And few places offer the ambience that Central Pier does during sunset hours – kayak or no kayak.
It’s true, Docklands’ rise to travel relevance is recent. But it is a rise that is greatly deserved.

Top Things to Do in Docklands, Melbourne in One Crazy Day
Published Date:
Last Updated:
Share post:
After spending 48 hours in the heart of the Melbourne CBD exploring all of the historic and iconic attractions that we all associate with this beautiful city, we decided to spend a day in the recently regenerated Docklands neighborhood which is just a short tram ride from downtown Melbourne. Whether you are looking to entertain a little retail therapy or perhaps enjoy a romantic ride on a giant observation wheel, there are plenty of things to do in Docklands, Melbourne.
The Docklands suburb can easily be explored on foot but it is also conveniently accessed via Melbourne’s efficient public transportation network. We want to share a few of the best places worth experiencing along with a couple of recommended places to eat based on our experiences here.
Where is Docklands, Melbourne?
Located just over a mile west of Melbourne’s Central Business District, the Docklands can be easily reached by hopping on the free circular tram ride that will conveniently take you to a number of stops in this part of the city. There are a number of iconic attractions here that are worth exploring, all of which you can see in less than 24 hours.
Melbourne’s spectacular harbor can be accessed from the Docklands area while a stroll along the Yarra River from the downtown area will take you to the edge of this neighborhood.
The History of Docklands
If you have an appreciation of contemporary architecture, the Docklands area is certainly the epitome of urban renewal through the development of a number of trendy looking buildings and apartment complexes. However, the Docklands suburb hasn’t always been like this and it’s interesting to note the history behind this part of Melbourne.
Prior to the 20th century, much of the Docklands was swamp land and only in the 1880s were plans made to redevelop this area. A major engineering project began in the 1880s by a British engineer to reroute the course of the Yarra River and with this, the construction of a new Victoria dock was ultimately the start of the Docklands suburb. A number of wharfs and other interconnected industries started to prosper here in the early 20th century.
By the middle of the 20th century, however, the Docklands area was becoming less prevalent. Modern container ships were opting for alternative docks in Melbourne, particularly those that were close to the mouth of the Yarra River, leaving the Docklands relatively unused. It was only in the 1980s and 1990s that a task force was developed to create a new infrastructure strategy to regenerate the struggling suburb.
Today, the Docklands area is a much sought after location in Melbourne for businesses looking to establish their headquarters here. Corporate Australian names such as ANZ, National Australia Bank, and Medibank Private are all headquartered in the Docklands neighborhood while global brands such as Ericsson can also be found here.
Things to do in Docklands, Melbourne
The Docklands suburb of Melbourne is a fun-filled destination if you are looking to explore outside of the downtown area. Let’s take a look at some of the best attractions worth experiencing during your 24 hours in this part of the city. Our highlight was undoubtedly the Melbourne Star but don’t worry, if gliding around a Ferris wheel isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other things to do in Docklands.
From arts to culture to sporting events, the Docklands is an area of Melbourne that should be on your radar.
Melbourne Star Observation Wheel
Before heading to the Docklands area, I heard about the Melbourne Star and honestly just thought it was going to be another Ferris wheel like anywhere else in the world.
What I didn’t realize was just how awesome the experience was going to be once we boarded our private cabin and started the 30-minute journey around the wheel.
21 spacious air-conditioned cabins are strategically positioned around the wheel and if you are fortunate to visit during a quiet time, the friendly Melbourne Star staff will give you a private cabin to enhance your experience.
Day or night, you’ll feel on top of the world as the Melbourne Star glides on its gentle arc through the sky.
Once the doors are closed, you are immediately engulfed in the breathtaking panoramic views of Melbourne. The reality is that the higher you get, the more spectacular the views…at least that was our impression.
A guided commentary highlights some of the iconic landmarks around Melbourne’s CBD and surrounding area, while you are also handed a map prior to boarding so you can pinpoint specific spots that you are eager to see from almost 400 feet in the sky.
Let’s take a moment to clarify the correct terminology for this attraction The Melbourne Star is technically NOT a Ferris wheel, rather it is a ‘Giant Observation Wheel’ and is one of only four existing around the world. The key differences between the two are related to size and the overall technical engineering of the structure.
Whereas a Ferris wheel may be renowned as a “rickety” structure, the Melbourne Star is a stereotypical example of a Giant Observation Wheel soundly constructed with modern design and engineering components.
The Sights and Lights package is definitely the best value ticket you can purchase. This ticket allows not one but two journeys around the Melbourne Star. The beauty of this ticket is that you can experience the amazing Melbourne skyline during the day and then appreciate the “glittering kaleidoscope of color” at night.
The Melbourne Star houses a spectacular LED display and transforms the wheel into a hub of color in the heart of the Docklands suburb.
Alternatively, if you experience your first ride in overcast or rainy conditions, you always have a second opportunity to return within 12 months of the first ride. This is exactly what we did and certainly appreciated the amazing weather on our second trip which helps capture some amazing shots of Melbourne.
Be sure to check out the Melbourne Star website for all the latest admission prices and packages that may be available during your visit.
Harbour Town Shopping Outlets
If you have never visited Australia and are planning an upcoming trip, it’s likely that you will be warned about how expensive this country is. This is true to an extent but for those of you that still cannot resist enjoying some retail therapy, the Harbour Town Shopping Outlets is the perfect place to visit and find some great prices on designer brands.
The open-air design of Harbour Town means that you can enjoy the gorgeous Melbourne weather while taking some time to hop in and out of your favorite stores. Not only can you find some great clothing options, there are plenty of souvenir shops at affordable prices to find that perfect gift for friends and family back home.
The beauty of Harbour Town is that it’s more than just a shopping experience. Conveniently accessible via the free circular tram network, visitors can also enjoy a selection of fine dining establishments and also an entertainment hub including mini golf and a variety of activities for the kids.
- Webb Bridge
I mentioned earlier that the Docklands was a hub for trendy architecture. The ultimate example of architectural brilliance has to be the iconic Webb Bridge that crosses the Yarra River. Quirky, unorthodox, brilliant and eye-catching are all words that I would use to describe the appearance of the Webb Bridge.
A competition-winning design for a new pedestrian/cycle bridge, Webb Bridge was designed by Denton Corker Marshall in collaboration with artist Robert Owen. The distinctive appearance of this bridge is what makes this stand out from other bridges along the river.
As an object, it appears as a delineated structure, a sensuous volume, light and linear. Space is seen as atmospheric, dynamic and transitional.
However, it’s perhaps the location in the Docklands suburb that helps transform this structure into an integral part of Melbourne’s modernistic approach to regeneration.
- Etihad Stadium
The impressive Etihad Stadium is the focal point of this suburb with the likes of the Melbourne Renegades (20/20 Big Bash League cricket team), Melbourne Victory (Australian soccer team) and five local AFL teams calling this their home stadium. Combine this with a number of concerts that have taken place here with world-famous artists such as George Michael, Bon Jovi, and Coldplay all performing here.
If you are not fortunate enough to see a live event inside the Etihad Stadium, perhaps a “behind the scenes” tour of the stadium will be an intriguing prospect. For only $15 (adults), visitors can take a tour of the changing rooms, media center, coaches box and even walk out of the tunnel at this impressive arena.
Where to Eat in Docklands?
After exploring the Docklands, it’s likely you will want to find a place to grab a bite to eat. Don’t worry, there are plenty of awesome choices just like everywhere else in Melbourne.
We enjoyed a delicious late lunch at The Fish Dept in the Harbour Town Shopping Outlets and we can both attest to this being one of our favorite meals throughout our time in Melbourne.
Burger Monster offers a specialized array of home-made burgers and given that these are freshly made to your order, you can be sure you are getting one of the finest burgers in Melbourne. If you are looking for a little more international cuisine, why not sample Gold Leaf Chinese Restaurant for a more upscale experience or perhaps Old Man Pho for a plethora of delicious Asian & Vietnamese dishes.
Looking for something with a waterfront view? Why not take a short walk from Harbour Town and experience Renzo’s Bar Cafe Italiano and enjoy amazing views across the water from the terrace.
Regardless of your preference, you can be sure that the Docklands will have something to entice your taste buds. In our opinion, you can’t beat a good old traditional Aussie Fish and Chips so be sure to sample this before you leave Melbourne!
If you are looking for a plethora of things to do in Docklands, Melbourne, you certainly won’t be disappointed. We are sharing our 24-hour guide to this Melbourne suburb but the reality is that you could visit here multiple times during your stay in the city, given that it is only a short tram ride over from the central business district.
We were understandably impressed by the Melbourne Star and I think it’s fair to say that Heather was impressed by the Harbour Town Shopping Outlets (ok, I was too!). The history of the Docklands suburb is intriguing and it’s amazing to see how an area has been regenerated so quickly and successfully. Our final tip…do not forget the Fish and Chips, you won’t be disappointed!

That sounds like a perfect day! We love 24 hour guides. They are like a small sample of the city. If 24 hours look so interesting, we are sure a few more days would not hurt. #feetdotravel
Cheers guys, yeah we love stumbling across these types of guides and love to share them from our experiences also! You could easily spend more than 24 hours exploring the Docklands area and perhaps you would pick one or two of our suggestions if you wanted to spend more time at each spot, but overall it’s a great experience and definitely something you should explore if you visit Melbourne.
I can still remember the old Docklands from when I was a kid. Back then it was just some dilapidated warehouses and I feel like Etihad Stadium really was the start of that transformation. Looking at it all now through your photos, it certainly has come a long way. The Melbourne Star has to be one of the most maligned additions to the city in quite some time, so I’m glad it’s starting to get some love. So glad you both enjoyed your time in Melbourne and can share it with us all.
Thanks so much David for a little bit of extra history on the Docklands area! It’s such a great story when areas like this are transformed and regenerated into a thriving community and obviously attractions such as the Etihad Stadium and Melbourne Star play a huge part in that. It’s interesting that the Melbourne Star has been ‘cringed upon’ or looked at critically by locals but it’s definitely a great way to get tourists to head over to that part of the city and admire the amazing views of the skyline. We had an AMAZING time in Melbourne and can’t wait to return! It’s such a privilege to be able to share this with our readers and hopefully inspire one or two to head down and explore it for themselves…they won’t regret it 🙂
I LOVE Ferris wheels. The Melbourne Star looks so amazing. That’s on my list for Melbourne now.
Definitely one of the best wheels we have experienced around the world, Erin! The journey takes 30 minutes and it’s certainly a relaxing experience to admire the amazing views of the city. Hopefully you get a private pod like we did because that just adds to the experience 🙂
The architecture is stunning, and that fish and chips dish looks legit! We can’t wait to visit Melbourne one day, adding it to the bucket list.
Hi Scarlett, trust me when I say that Fish and Chips was delicious and that’s coming from someone that is from England and used to the BEST fish and chips dishes!! Hopefully, you will have the opportunity to visit Melbourne soon because it’s a remarkable city and you will LOVE it 🙂 If you head there, let us know and we will be happy to share more ideas of things to do and places to see in and around the city based on our experiences!
Looks like a fun day with lots of interesting history to this place. Melbourne has always been on my visit Australia list so I’m glad I read your post, it does look like a remarkable place. I love fish and chips so I’m game for that! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for your comments Lisa! There definitely is a lot of history surrounding the Docklands though it seems much of it is negative and today we can start to appreciate the beauty of how this has been renovated and its becoming a thriving community thanks to initiatives like Harbour Town Outlets, the Melbourne Star and of coruse, Etihad Stadium! Fish and Chips was delicious so can highly recommend that…it’s making me hungry just thinking about this again 🙂
This sounds like a great day! I’d love to visit Australia one day and the more I read about it, the more wanderlust I have! Thanks for sharing 🙂
You are very welcome Annalise! Thanks for visiting our blog and hopefully you will have the opportunity to visit Melbourne and the rest of Australia in the near future! It’s a really spectacular country though of course there is so much more to see than we have covered 🙂 We have barely touched the surface but that’s the beauty of traveling right!
Docklands has come a long way since my last visit. Great new info, I think it might be time for me to return.
Thanks Shona, I appreciate your kind comments! We have only seen the Docklands how it is today but after reading your remarks along with others in addition to the research we did, it seems this suburb is now the epitome of a regenerated neighborhood and a huge success story. It’s great to hear because all too frequently you hear about the reverse, how a location was once a thriving community and has since dwindled to a dilapidated demise!
The Docklands look like a fun place to spend the day. Stunning photos and great history of the area. My favorite is the ferris wheel which I would have to ride day and night for the views and some great photos! Thanks for sharing 🙂 #feetdotravel
Thanks so much for your comments Stephanie! The Docklands area really is a cool place to spend both day and night. The beauty of the Melbourne Star is that you can purchase a ticket for two trips around so you can get the best of both experiences during the day and when the lights start to sparkle on the Melbourne skyline – 30 minutes x 2 of an amazing experience!
We have yet to reach Australia, and would love to visit Melbourne. Love the idea of the free jump off tram, unusual for a city not to charge to get around. The Melbourne Star looks just like the London eye which we enjoyed, the views looked amazing! Great post full of useful information. #feetdotravel
Hi guys, thanks so much for your kind comments! Melbourne is a beautiful city. When I heard it was voted the “world’s most livable city,” I figured it was just another media hyped survey but after spending a week here, I can well and truly say that it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. The Docklands area was a real surprise to find it and I am with you, having a free tram network within the CBD is so unusual but a nice service to have.
I really enjoyed visiting the Docklands in Melbourne but you guys have definitely explored it more than me! Love that you went on the observation wheel – the views are absolutely stunning! The fish looks amazing too! Thanks for sharing!
You are very welcome and thanks so much for taking the time to comment on this post! The Docklands was a really cool find and we would head back there in a heartbeat the next time we head to Melbourne…hopefully sooner rather than later because we fell in love with this city 🙂
Really great, informative post! Also, your pictures are beautiful. Melbourne certainly seems like an interesting city and the Docklands seems like a great day trip! Will keep in mind if I’m ever in Australia 🙂
Thanks so much Alissa, we appreciate your kind comments! Definitely recommend spending at least one day in the Docklands area but it’s so conveniently accessible that you may want to return after exploring the first day! Hope you have the opportunity to explore this along with the rest of Australia sometime soon 🙂
What a great view from the ferris wheel! We loved Melbourne when we visited last year. The fact that most things are within walking distance is magnificent. Taking a stroll alongside the river is a great way to unwind after a large delicious meal!
Completely agree with you about Melbourne being such a walkable city! Add to that the free circular tram network within the CBD and it’s the perfect city…I think a lot of other cities around the world could take a look at Melbourne as a perfect example to compare themselves with because it’s definitely an attractive aspect that will appeal to visitors.
We would LOVE to ride the Melbourne Star, especially at night. The skyline is really nice and it strikes us that Melbourne is a really pretty city. Definitely on the Bucket List…and maybe moving up a few spots now. 🙂 As always, thanks for sharing!
Cheers guys, always appreciate your insightful comments 🙂 Melbourne is a spectacular city and definitely it’s worthwhile admiring it from a distance at the top of the Melbourne Star!
It’s been a while since I first visited Melbourne and boy oh boy, it’s changed a lot! There are so many new things to do here now, when I return, I will definitely be checking this area out but the question will be … where do I start first??? #feetdotravel
Hi Angie, it sounds like you need to head back to Melbourne ASAP 🙂 It will be like visiting a new city for you! The Docklands is just one area that has probably changed substantially since you were last there.
We briefly saw this are when we did a river cruise in Melbs! learnt lots of fantastic facts about it but wish we’d had a chance to stop off an explore now! There’s clearly so many awesome things we missed!
Hi Sarah, you will just have to head back to Melbourne again to experience the Docklands 🙂 Not that any of us need a reason to head back to this amazing city! We spent a week in Melbourne and that was nowhere near enough time to visit everything we wanted to see. We are already planning a return visit 🙂
Great stuff Chris. I’ve lived in Melbourne on and off for the past year and you hit all the key points around Docklands. The free trams are great although I still haven’t had a go on the on the Melbourne Star yet!
Thanks so much Barry, glad that we covered the main highlights in the Docklands area. It was such a relaxing part of Melbourne to wander around and taking a trip around the Melbourne Star not once but twice was definitely one of our favorite experiences while in Melbourne. Stunning panoramic views of the city and beyond.
There is also Artvo and Glowgolf at the Harbour Town Shopping center as well
Cheers Mik, yes just a plethora of awesome attractions and things to do in the Docklands area! Thanks for recommending those, hopefully will have the opportunity to experience them next time we head to Melbourne.
Looks like an amazing part of the city to explore! Hoping to get to Melbourne soon and I must admit the more I see and read the more this city really appeals! Will be pinning for future reference!
Thanks for your kind comments Tracy! Melbourne is a beautiful city and we only barely touched the surface in the week that we spent in and around the CBD. The Docklands area was definitely a nice “surprise find” and if you are looking to find a spot that is a little quieter than the mainstream downtown area such as around Flinders Station, the Docklands is the place to go. Hope you have the opportunity to visit sometime in the near future, you will have a great time there.
Wow such an amazing and informative article. Surely taking this as a guidebook for our next trip.
Thank you for this, Chris. I’ve been to Melbourne, like twice, but never visited Docklands. It’s like I’ve missed the best part of it. Your informative post gives me reasons to visit Melbourne again, with my husband. More power to you!
I’ve been to the Docklands a few months ago and it definitely is one of the most interesting developments in Melbourne (in my own opinion). Loved the architecture and the vibe of the area.
Hi Neil, yes the Docklands was one of our favorite spots around Melbourne not only because of the modern vibe but also because there was so much to do there! We certainly fell in love with the city of Melbourne in general and cannot wait to return hopefully in the near future. Would love to be there right now actually for the Aussie Open!!
Last time I was in Docklands it was known as North Warf. I guess it is time to visit again.
Thanks for the great read. I’ll be visiting soon.
Cheers Penny…

3. Ride the free tram around the city
Not only is this specific tram free for visitors and locals, but it’s also a really great way to see Melbourne in an iconic tram. It’ll save you money on transport, keep your legs from burning out and can be a great way to take in the city without breaking a sweat.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Grab a bottle of wine and take it along with you for a night of spectacular dumplings, fried rice and noodles. Get yourself down to Ants Bistro in Corrs Lane, Chinatown. 10. Queensberry Pour House
My all-time favourite cafe in Melbourne has to be Queensberry Pour House . It’s understated, simple and serves up incredibly good coffee and AMAZING food. Try the gooey, sticky, chocolatey goodness that is their homemade brownie. The smashed eggs with roast capsicum pesto is also a must-try!

Docklands, Melbourne
Docklands, Victoria 3008
Located on the waterfront, Melbourne City’s Docklands is a vibrant hub of culture.
Back in the day, it was known as the West Melbourne Swamp, but it now offers visitors a selection of things to do, from serious shopping encounters to art exhibits and fun rides.
Here are some of the best things to do at Melbourne’s Docklands
1. get arty.
All around the Docklands you’ll find fascinating art sculptures, something the area has become well-known for. There are plenty of creative things to see on the waterfront, where each sculpture and piece of art has its own theme and history. Essentially, the Docklands acts as an open air gallery where you can take a stroll through the cultural arms of the city.
2. Visit the Library
For some peace and quiet, head to the Library at The Dock, where you can settle down with a good book and a hot drink while looking out over the incredible views of the Yarra River . As one side has views of the river, and the other has parkland sights, any seat you choose will provide you with plenty of relaxing views.
3. Ride the Melbourne Star
Akin to the London Eye, the Melbourne Star offers visitors the chance to see the city from a different perspective. Built back in 2008, the futuristic Ferris wheel is illuminated at night, providing the Docklands with a pretty silhouette. It is actually in the top ten largest Ferris wheels in the world, so hop aboard and see if you can pick out some of the city’s most famous landmarks from the sky.
4. Hit the Shops
Shopping is a popular activity at the Docklands thanks to the endless supply of boutique stores, artisan shops, and fashion outlets. As well as well-known shops, you can also find a selection of open-air shops at Harbour Town, that will give you an insight into local life.
5. Check out Central Pier
Sunsets at the Docklands are spectacular, and the Central Pier offers the perfect place to soak it up from. As the river gets bathed in the orange glow of the Melbourne Starsun, you can marvel at the surreal scene of boats carving their way across the smooth water of the river. This is also the time of day when the jellyfish start to migrate, so keep your eyes peeled for these fascinating creatures frolicking in the water.
6. Watch the Footy
If you want to immerse yourself in the Melbournian culture, watching a football game is an easy way in. With the unique game being the number one sport in this city. The game is fast-paced and exhilarating, with the crowd screaming consistently throughout the match. The stadium is home to many sections, so you can hang out at the very front, or hang out back at one of the many bars.
7. Cruise down the Yarra River
Sightsee while you float your way down the Yarra River. The river weaves through the very centre of the city, meeting at the docklands to eventually connect with the sea. You can join in on a cruise either in the day or night, either soaking up the sunshine or marvelling at the sparkling skyscrapers and stars. There are even nibbles on offer, so you can tuck into some delicious delights and wash it down with a glass of sparkling wine or locally crafted beer.
8. Spoil your Taste Buds
The waterfront is truly a hub for delicious food, with countless restaurants lining the boardwalk. Due to the quantity, there are plenty of choices to pick from. From traditional Italian delights to luxurious Asian fusion food. The location of these restaurants is an extra themselves, as you can enjoy a stunning view to go with your food.
9. Enjoy a Unique Experience
There are several alternative activities at the docklands, bringing unforgettable experiences to both locals and tourists. Step into the icehouse for a day of skating, which is perfect for Australia’s hot summer days. Otherwise, you can take your date or kids to the glow in the dark mini golf, which has neon lights and glow-in-the-dark technology to guide you through this pitch-black playground. The Glow golf course also promises laser tag for you and your friends, so you can let off some steam if you have a bit more energy.
10. Sip on a Cocktail
Sit back and relax while enjoying the view with a delicious cocktail in hand. Melbourne is famous for its cocktails, with unique recipes and modern changes to traditional formulas. Either go classic with a martini or try out one of the bartender’s newest creations. Enjoying the waterside view as the sunsets in front of you.
The Docklands offers a cultural experience for every kind of traveller, whether you’re looking to explore the creative side of the city, discover some delicious dishes, or simply soak up some spectacular views. ravel up

THINGS TO DO IN DOCKLANDS, MELBOURNE WITH KIDS – WHAT TO SEE, WHERE TO EAT & WHERE TO STAY
Once notoriously known as Melbourne’s industrial wasteland – Docklands – the waterfront suburb located on the outskirts of the CBD has transformed into an attraction-filled gem brimming with shops, eateries, bars, and art.
I have to confess that in the past nothing really attracted me to Docklands apart from drunken Friday nights getting real messy at Alumbra, maybe the occasional wedding, and perhaps, a hazy booze cruise around the harbour.
Now that boozy activities aren’t a possibility anymore, we decided that it would be a great opportunity to see it with sober eyes and let the little ones experience the iconic Melbourne Star and run through the incredible trick art gallery, ArtVo.
Boy, it was so worth it. Everyone, including man child and myself had a world of fun. So, If you’re on the lookout for things to do in Melbourne with kids, I guarantee you that a drive or stroll down to Docklands will be a day well spent for the whole family.
Shop & Dine at District Docklands
You can’t visit Docklands without missing the newly revamped ‘District’ shopping centre (formerly known as Harbour Town), given that most of Dockland’s prime points of interest are located within this centre.
If you’re here for retail therapy, The District Docklands houses fashion giants, such as H&M, Cotton On, MiniSo and many more. Everything you could possibly need to get your shopping fix.
Don’t forget to swing by two of the best family activities in Melbourne CBD: ArtVo 3D Trick Art Gallery and the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel .
READ MORE: An Inside Glimpse at ArtVo 3D Trick Art Gallery
Become a Piece of Artwork at ArtVo
A trip to Docklands with kids wouldn’t be complete without visiting the impressive ArtVo gallery . If there’s one bucket list item you need to tick off in Melbourne with kids, then this jaw-dropping immersive 3D art gallery has to be it.
AtVo isn’t your traditional art gallery where no one really knows what the heck they’re looking at (at least I don’t). You get to interact with it, touch it, be in the art. How much more awesome is that than staring at modern art and trying to figure out what it is?
Each room is filled with new surprises, and whether you’re bringing the baby, toddler, in-laws or great grandparents – there’s loads of fun to be had for absolutely everyone.
26 Star Crescent, Docklands VIC 3008
Opening hours: 10am – 6pm (weekdays) 10am – 11:30pm (Fridays & Saturdays) 7 days a week
Rest Stop at Library @ The Dock
Trying to keep up with all the things to do in Melbourne with kids is an arduous task for any parent, which is probably why you need to wind down, have a coffee, read a book, and maybe even change a nappy at the Docklands library.
If books rock your boat, then this is one Melbourne library you don’t want to skimp out on. Offering a complete view of the entire Docklands Waterfront, fitted with a modern timber interior, and ceiling-high windows for maximum view appreciation, I can honestly say – I was ready to pitch up a tent and stay the night.
As a parent, you don’t really ask for much more than a coffee (or 10), a place to entertain the kids so you can drink said coffee, free wifi, a moment’s peace, and a killer view. Mums and Dads, this is the lot .
Equipped with toilets, a baby change room, a relaxing chill out zone, and great barista coffee, you’ll probably want to ditch your home and move here. Oh, did I mention that there’s even an outdoor playground at the back of the library?
107 Victoria Harbour Promenade, VIC 3008 More info here .
Opening hours: 8am – 7pm (weekdays), 10am – 5pm (Saturdays), 12pm – 5pm (Sundays)
Get High on the Melbourne Star
Figuratively speaking, of course. Or, am I? Dealing with two kids does make me want to inhale some… Okay, I’m not going to go there. To the point.
Joining the elite ranks of the London Eye and the Singapore Flyer, I’m proud to say that Melbourne has its very own Star .
Originally, the Melbourne Star closed to the public a 40 days after it opened. Melbournians will forever remember it as the giant ferris wheel that succumbed to the scorching Australian summer heat.
After a complete rebuild, the marvel reopened its doors in 2013, more sturdy and safer than ever, and has been an icon in our beloved city since.
A beloved tourist and family activity in Melbourne, this is one experience you need to have when visiting. Plus, you won’t get better view of the Melbourne skyline anywhere else (alright, maybe at the top of the Eureka Skydeck )
101 Waterfront Way, Docklands VIC 3008
Opening hours: 11am – 7pm daily (May to August), 11am – 10pm daily (September to April)
For more information on tickets and prices, see here .

Pit-Stop at Wonderland Fun Park
Note: This attraction has permanently move to Federation Square as of September 2019
For pint-sized thrill seekers, make a short stop at the Wonderland Fun Park located beneath the Melbourne Star, and enjoy an array of fun rides, such as, Dodgem Car, Grand Carousel, Pirate Ship, and plenty more.
It’s free to enter Wonderland Fun Park, but you’ll need to purchase tickets or tokens in order to experience the rides.
Stroll down New Quay Promenade
You’ve got to be somewhat strategic in planning your Docklands day out, primarily due to the unpredictable nature of Melbourne weather. On a windy Melbourne day, Docklands probably cops the brunt of it, and you will definitely not have a pleasant experience when there’s a chill in the air and the winds are blowing ferociously.
But, on a fine day, make sure you stroll down the New Quay Promenade to admire the waterfront, inspect amusing urban art sculptures like ‘Cow Up a Tree’, and get a sit-down meal at the multitude of restaurants strewn along the waterfront.
Wander through Docklands Park
If you continue walking south, past the Etihad Stadium, you’ll reach a little open green oasis called the Docklands Park.
Now, there’s not much you’ll find in this park, but if your little ones are getting restless and need to stretch their legs, there’s a great little playground for them to bounce around in.
Plus, it’s on the way to…
The Webb Bridge
If you’re a photography nut, or simply wish to cross from Docklands over the Yarra River to South Wharf, you can’t miss this architectural feat. Besides, kids will love running through this bridge. Just look out for the cyclists.
If you’re here to capture photos, you’ll find that the bridge becomes quite the marvel at dusk when the lights on the ground shine up to illuminate the entire structure.
Try Mini Golf in the Dark
Retreat indoors, get your competitive shoes on and putt your way through this 18-hole course. The catch? Well, you gotta putt your way through in the dark.
Glow Golf Melbourne is Australia’s first miniature golf course that is designed to be played in the dark. The course combines UV lighting and fluorescent colours to create a glow-in-the-dark effect.
A whole heap of fun for couples and families alike, this is one unique experience that can only be found in Docklands.
5 Star Crescent, Docklands VIC 3008
Opening times: 12pm – 9:30pm (Mon-Thu), 12pm – 11pm (Fridays), 10am – 11pm (Saturdays), 10am – 6:30pm (Sundays)
Have a Barbie on an AquaDonut
Hire a private donut boat and float around the waters of Docklands for a couple hours while you grill the day away.
Um.. Uh-mazing! Whoever thought of pairing grilled meats and chilling on a floating device that looks like a gigantic doughnut is a freakin’ genius.
The Aquadonut in Docklands comes equipped with cutlery, a Bluetooth music system if you want to party up (although not recommended given the size of this thing) and, of course, a charcoal BBQ. You just need to BYO your own meats and drinks.
31 Doepel Way, Docklands VIC 3008

Where to Eat in Docklands
Cambodian, Mediterranean, Modern Australian, Thai, Chinese, or Lebanese – you’ll find no shortage of places to eat in Docklands.
If you’re after a sit down feed, perhaps even with a stellar view – I’m going to say these restaurants take the cake for me:
Bopha Devi (Cambodian)
If you’re wondering what on Earth Cambodian cuisine actually is, well, to put it simply, it’s like a mix between Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. Try the Khmer Yellow Crepe, Amok and Loc Luc.
Take a look at the menu and reserve a table here .
27 Rakaia Way, Docklands 3008 +613 8658 3449
Berth (Modern Australian)
Need date night ideas for your other half. Don’t worry, I gotchu covered. This place will earn you all the brownie points. I’m talking views, modern decor, food and general ambience. This is the package, love birds.
45 New Quay Promenade, Docklands 3008 +613 9670 0199
Pok Pok (Thai)
In Thai, Pok Pok is the sound a mortar and pestle make when you’re crushing herbs or making a Papaya Salad. Totally makes sense now, right? Try the Pad Thai, Crying Tiger Beef Salad, and Spicy Grilled Pork Sausage. So good .
803 Bourke St, Docklands 3008 +613 9620 4580
Cargo (Burgers & Pizza)
I’ve yet to meet an adult or kids who doesn’t love pizza and burgers, so if you want to stay on the safe side, then this is your joint. A simple and delicious meal that the whole family is guaranteed to enjoy.
Bonus points go to the magical view over Docklands, particularly during the sunset hour.
