HAVE YOUR SAY ON BUS SERVICE CHANGES

Published 5 February 2024 at 1:30pm

The region’s bus operators, together with South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) are consulting on proposed changes to some bus services from Sunday 7 April. Consultations will be taking place on the commercial services run by First as well as those supported financially by SYMCA. Both consultations will open on Monday 5 and close on Thursday 15 February. South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has had feedback about the bus network from hundreds of South Yorkshire’s residents, through his Fair Deal campaign. The Mayor held nearly 30 public meetings and replied to hundreds of emails and letters following recent rounds of changes.  Through the Enhanced Partnership Forum, the Combined Authority has also fed residents’ concerns to the operators, local authority representatives and employers, and the operators have identified changes that they feel would improve specific local services and address some of the more acute needs that residents have raised.  Members of the public are now being encouraged to have their say on proposed changes to First South Yorkshire’s commercial network and can find out more information and provide feedback at firstbus.co.uk/south-yorkshire/news-and-service-updates/have-your-say. SYMCA is also seeking views on proposed changes to its tendered bus services. Details of the services affected and how to give feedback can be found at travelsouthyorkshire.com/April2024 . The proposals include: •    minor timetable changes to address punctuality issues •    some improvements in service frequency and routes  •    improved access to employment and local amenities. Bus operators will consider and review all feedback with SYMCA to agree any changes needed before the final network plan is implemented from Sunday 7 April.

Bus services set to change.

Main image for Bus services set to change

BUS services across Barnsley will temporarily change from Monday, Travel South Yorkshire has announced.

A reduced timetable will operate across the region until further notice, following government advice around social contact to combat coronavirus.

Travel South Yorkshire is advising passengers needing to make essential journeys on public transport to check before they travel at www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/service changes as reduced timetables will operate across the region until further notice. The timetables have been designed to ensure that critical routes are maintained wherever possible.

Tim Taylor, director of customer services for South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, says:

“Government guidance on containing the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19) means more people are working from home, schools are closing and social activities are on hold. This has inevitably led to a decrease in demand for bus services across the region.

“Bus operators are also facing the same challenges as other employers, reporting an increase in staff absences as people are being encouraged to self-isolate to keep others safe.

“But we know many people still need to travel to work, including key workers, or to support family and friends. These timetable changes will keep the bus network running for essential journeys, while responding to the impact this unprecedented situation has had on the demand for public transport in the region.

“We will continue to work with operators to monitor this fast-moving situation, liaise closely with government and other authorities, and respond as appropriate to prioritise passenger and staff safety and wellbeing. Anyone feeling unwell with symptoms of Coronavirus a new, continuous cough or a high temperature should follow government advice and not travel, to help to protect others from infection.”

Details of the revised timetables, and the latest updates on tram and rail services, can be found at travelsouthyorkshire.com/service changes

The Traveline team is available on 01709 515151 between 8am and 6pm seven days week to answer customer queries. Travel South Yorkshire social media channels will also be updated with the latest information.

Due to the closure of schools to most pupils, the majority of dedicated school bus services will cease. Most schools are served by commercial timetabled services, however in isolated areas some school buses may continue to operate for the time being.
