No-travel advisory lifted for parts of NW Minnesota; bitter cold continues
Updated: Jan. 14, 8 a.m.
While much of Minnesota didn’t receive as much snow as initially expected on Friday, gusty winds Saturday created blizzard conditions in parts of the state. And a blast of bitter cold air will remain entrenched across the region over the next couple days.
Wind chills were already dropping into the 40s below zero across parts of western Minnesota on Saturday evening. At 1 a.m. Sunday, Worthington reported a temperature of 20 below zero with a wind chill of 52 below.
Travel conditions
The Minnesota Department of Transportation issued a no-travel advisory Saturday for much of northwest Minnesota, from Ada north to Crookston, East Grand Forks and Hallock, “due to high winds causing blowing snow with zero visibility.”
The advisory was lifted on Sunday morning .

“Motorists should continue to use caution as blowing snow can limit visibility, especially in open areas with no wind breaks,” MnDOT’s District 2 in northwest Minnesota reported on Sunday morning.
No-travel advisories that had been in place Saturday night also were lifted Sunday morning for eastern North Dakota, including Interstate 29.
MnDOT continued to report snow-covered roads Sunday morning across much of western and southern Minnesota.
The State Patrol reported more than 200 crashes and 65 spinouts or vehicles in the ditch along state and federal highways in Minnesota between 6 a.m. Friday and 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
To the west, South Dakota transportation officials advised no travel Sunday morning for many highways south and west of Sioux Falls
And to the south, Iowa transportation officials were advising no travel across much of that state, and some roads were listed as impassable.
Blast of bitter cold
The strong northwest winds — gusting to 40 mph at times in western Minnesota on Saturday — brought in a blast of bitter cold that’ll linger in the region for several days.
Wind chill warnings and advisories remained in effect for the entire state on Sunday morning. Parts of western Minnesota saw wind chills drop into the 50s below zero late Saturday and early Sunday.
For the Twin Cities, a wind chill advisory runs until noon Tuesday. Wind chills may drop into the 30s below zero.
Forecasters said temperatures across much of Minnesota may not climb above zero until Tuesday afternoon.
Friday snowfall totals
Much of southern and central Minnesota did not get as much snow on Friday as initially predicted by forecast models — only a dusting to a couple inches in the Twin Cities metro area.
There was significant snow in southeast Minnesota, with the National Weather Service receiving reports of 7 inches at Winona and Kasson; 6.8 inches near Houston; 6.5 inches in Rochester; and 6 inches near Wabasha. Greater snow totals were reported to the south and east, across Iowa and Wisconsin.
- Updraft Anatomy of a forecast model bust for Twin Cities snow
To the north, several days of lake-effect snow added up to well over a foot on parts of Minnesota’s North Shore. That’s good news for North Shore businesses that rely on winter tourists, and people who pursue winter activities.
Sandy Gunnink, president of the Finland Snowmobile and ATV Club, said about 15 inches of snow fell on the trails in that area.
“We have an event coming up in February that we were going to have to make a decision on, so this is — it’s white gold up here, for not only our club, and people that come up to snowmobile, ice fish, those kinds of things,” Gunnink told MPR News. “So it helps everybody, especially our communities.”
Gunnink said it will take a few days for volunteers to pack and groom the trails.

Packing tips for your visit to rochester, mn.
Click on the season below in which you'll be visiting Rochester, MN, to find helpful packing tips. Follow the suggestions and people might just think you're a Minnesota native.
When All Else Fails
Rochester's downtown buildings are connected to an above and below ground tunnel system called skyways and subways. In true, hardy, Minnesota form, there are no subway cars in this system. It's for walking from building to building in an environment that maintains a steady 68 degrees. The luxury lies in the fact that you don't have to step foot outside. If you plan to use the subways/skyways while you're here, be sure to pack comfortable shoes.
Brrr! These are Rochester's coldest months. December brings snow and cold temperatures in the 20s. January and February offer average high temps in the 20s and below, often with wind chills that make it feel well below zero.
How to Dress for Minnesota Winters
1. Bring a coat. Be sure it is a very warm-rated one, preferably with wind protection and including natural fibers like wool and down — especially if you'll be spending any significant time outdoors.
2. Accessorize. Don't worry as much about beauty as practicality. Warm-rated scarves, mittens, hats or ear warmers, and insulated boots are a must. We lose most heat through our heads, so hats are critical. The more it looks like something Elmer Fudd wore, the warmer it will be.
3. Layers aren't just for cakes. Minnesotans are comfortable in sweaters and jeans, sometimes layered with long underwear or long-sleeve t-shirts. Layering clothing allows you to adjust to your own comfort level.
March is a combination of winter with hints of spring thrown in on any given day. Average temps are in the 30s. April temps begin to increase to the 50s and spring is beginning to thaw the frozen ground. May's average temps move into the 60s.
How to Dress for Minnesota Springs
1. Variety outdoors. In March dressing warmly is still a must for outdoor adventures, but you can lighten up your coat, hat, mittens, and other accessories for a less warm rating. Don't forget to bring boots to trudge through the snow or slush from melting snow. In April, light jackets and gloves are a good idea. In May, they're generally optional, but nighttime temps still get a bit chilly.
2. Layers? You bet! If you'll be indoors most of the time, long sleeves and jeans are the norm. Layering clothes is a great idea so you can adjust your comfort level throughout the day as the weather changes.
3. Lighten up! It's in spring, particularly April and May, that Minnesotans begin to wear a combination of summer and spring clothing-indoors, light sweaters, short sleeves with pants, and in late May, even shorts.
June is nearly perfect. Temps are in the upper 70s during the day with little humidity. July, and August are the warmest months of the year in Minnesota. Temps range from the 70s to 90s. Watch for the humidity to spike in late July and August. Humidity makes the heat uncomfortable and is not something enjoyed by even the hardiest of Minnesotans.
How to Dress for Minnesota Summers
1. Bring on the shorts! Summer attire such as t-shirts and shorts, tanks and flip-flops are most comfortable. If you need to dress more formally, short-sleeved shirts and suits and dresses made of light, breathable material will enhance your comfort.
2. Plan ahead. Don't forget a light sweater or sweatshirt for the cooler evenings outdoors.
3. Stay dry. Minnesota's varied climate can include the occasional thunderstorm or light rain. Bring a raincoat and umbrella to be prepared.
Things start to cool down again, as Minnesota ushers in another season. September brings slightly cooler temperatures back down into the 60s. Daytime temps can be comfortable, in the 70s, but cooling down substantially in the evenings. October is a cooler month still, and temps can change significantly throughout the year. It is a crisp time of year that can also bring some unusually warm daytime temps. November often closes out fall but begins to feel like winter as temps average in the 30s.
How to Dress for Minnesota Falls
1. Get out those coats . In early fall, temps can range from the warmth of summer to the coolness of fall. Bring light jackets for outdoor activities. In October, add a pair of gloves to the mix. November gets colder yet, so a warm jacket, hat, and mittens will keep you warm.
2. Layer it on. Dressing in layers is a great idea beginning in October. The temp can change substantially from morning to evening so if you want to stay comfortable, wear a variety of clothing, some of which you can shed as the temps change.
3. Mix it up. With fluctuating temps this time of year, it's important to be prepared with variety. Jeans, long-sleeved shirts, and even a few shorts and short-sleeved shirts will keep you comfortable in September. Moving into October and November, light sweaters and long-sleeves are important.

Memorial Day forecast
Saturday looks to be the nicest day of the weekend, with some sunshine and highs near the mid-70s. But rain will return Sunday and showers look to be in the forecast through Tuesday. AAA expects Memorial Day weekend 2024 to be the busiest for travel in nearly two decades, so it remains to be seen how the forecast plays into that locally.
Temperatures will be in the lower 70s through that period until about Wednesday. It's trending warmer after that.

Owatonna High School student, 18, dies in multi-vehicle crash
An 18-year-old Owatonna High School senior was killed in a three-vehicle crash that happened in Rochester at the weekend.
The Owatonna High School cheerleading team said Olivia Flores, 18, died after the crash at Southwest Memorial Parkway and Southwest 12th Street.
The Rochester Police Department said the crash happened around 5:45 p.m. Saturday, and saw seven people taken to a local hospital to treat their injuries.
The medical conditions of others involved in the crash are unknown as of Monday morning.
Of the three vehicles involved, one was a Minnesota State Patrol car.
Flores was preparing to graduate on June 7.
"It is with broken hearts we have to say goodbye to our Olivia. She was such an amazing cheerleader, friend and person. She touched many lives and our lives will forever be changed from her brightening them," the cheer team said on social media .
Police haven't provided additional details on the crash as of Monday morning.
Note: The details provided in this story are based on law enforcement’s latest version of events, and may be subject to change.

Owatonna teen killed, 6 injured in rochester crash involving trooper's squad car.
An 18-year-old high school senior was killed in a three-vehicle crash in Rochester that left six others injured and involved a state trooper's vehicle, officials said.
The wreck occurred about 5:45 p.m. Saturday near the entrance to the Apache Mall at SW. Memorial Parkway and SW. 12th Street and claimed the life of Olivia Flores of Owatonna, police said.
According to police:
Trooper Shane Roper, 32, was heading east on 12th Street and collided with a car, occupied by Flores, heading west and turning left into the mall. The car then struck an SUV that was leaving the mall and waiting to turn right.
Police have yet to say whether the trooper or the car's driver had the right of way at the intersection, which is controlled by traffic signals.
In the car with Flores were the driver, 21-year-old Angelina Bartz, and 19-year-old Katarina Bartz, both of Owatonna.
In the SUV were driver Emie Pasco, 36, and 12-year-year-old Gabriella Parker, also both from Owatonna. Riding along with in the trooper squad was Peter Meyer, 20, of Zumbrota, Minn.
All seven people in the three vehicles were taken by emergency responders for treatment of their injuries, according to police. The only information released by police was that the SUV occupants sustained minor injuries.
Owatonna High School cheerleading said Flores, who was to graduate June 7, was a senior on the squad.
"It is with broken hearts we have to say goodbye to our Olivia," the organization said on social media. "She was such an amazing cheerleader, friend and person. She touched many lives, and our lives will forever be changed from her brightening them."
Michal Otte, who has organized an online fundraising effort on behalf of the Flores family, posted that "instead of planning Olivia's graduation party and celebrating her next chapter in life, [her parents] are left picking up the pieces of this tragedy. Olivia was such a special young lady. To know her is to be inspired by her. She was fierce, and she was loyal. She was beautiful down to her soul."
The head of the patrol, Col. Christina Bogojevic, released a statement Monday afternoon that read, "Making sure motorists are safe as they travel Minnesota's roads is at the core of what we do each day. Our agency works hard to prevent crashes and save lives. On Saturday evening, a Minnesota State Patrol squad was involved in a crash in Rochester in which someone later died. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic event."
