The Grand Tour

  • View history

The topic of this page has a wiki of its own: The Grand Tour Wiki .

Tgt logo

The Grand Tour is a motoring show on Amazon Prime featuring ex- Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond , and James May . The show's executive producer, Andy Wilman , also moved from Top Gear to work on the new show, alongside many other members of the cast and crew including directors Richard Porter, Brian Klein and Phil Churchward.

The Grand Tour was officially announced on the 30th of July, 2015 as "Untitled Car Show", after months of speculation, by the online streaming service Amazon Prime. The Name "The Grand Tour" wasn't announced till May 2016. An official trailer for the series was released fifteen months later, on the 7th of October 2016.

It was revealed that the trio had signed on for thirty-six episodes over three series of the show, although thirty-eight would eventually air during this contract, including two double-part specials. The first episode of the show premiered on the 18th of November, 2016. The show's second series premiered on the 8th of December, 2017. The show's third series premiered on the 18th January 2019. On the 15th of December, 2018, the show was officially renewed for a fourth series which premiered on the 13th of December, 2019.

As part of the show's renewal, it was revealed that the show would no longer film any studio segments, bringing an end to the studio-centric style of show that Clarkson, Hammond, and May had been working on together for seventeen years. The show's fourth season, the first to be produced under this new arrangement, began airing in 2019.

On November 30th, 2023, the series announced of it's finale. And then Clarkson, Hammond and May would depart upon it's conclusion The Grand Tour sometime in 2024 and focused of their personal projects and leave automotive TV completely. This statement ruled out a return to Top Gear, after the BBC went off-aired as being 'foresable future'. [1] However, The Grand Tour may continue with newer presenters. [2]

The-grand-tour festival

The show's first episode sees the presenters kick off with a festival in the California desert

The show officially began filming its first series on the 7th of October, 2015 when Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond published pictures from their first shoot in Portugal. The first set of studio segments for the show were filmed in July, 2016 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The show has since filmed in the US, the Netherlands, England, Finland, Germany, Scotland, and the United Arab Emirates.

Announcement [ ]

Amazon announced that they had signed Clarkson, Hammond, and May for 36 episodes of a new show on the 30th of July, 2015. The show was left untitled for many months with promotional videos being released focusing on the presenters' struggle to come up with a name. However, on the 12th of May, 2016, the name was finally revealed to be 'The Grand Tour', reflecting the worldwide nature of the show. More details about the show were also revealed, most notably that the show's format would closely mimic that of Top Gear , featuring studio segments that were to be recorded in a tent that changes locations in almost every episode.

Incidents [ ]

In filming for series 2 , Richard Hammond was involved in two separate accidents. The first occurred in Mozambique, where Hammond was knocked unconscious after falling off a motorcycle. The second more serious incident occurred in Switzerland while filming the series 2 premiere. Hammond crashed a Rimac Concept car while competing in a hill-climb event. The car subsequently caught fire and was completely destroyed. Hammond, meanwhile, was hospitalised with a fractured knee. The accident, coupled with Clarkson's pneumonia diagnosis, delayed the second series premiere from October to December.

In filming for series 4, the crew were forced to evacuate in Vietnam after monsoonal rains flooded the boats of the production crew. In filming for series 5 , James May was involved in a deadly crash in Norway.

This will be the last series of the Grand Tour and the subsequent last series done by Clarkson, Hammond and May.

Segments [ ]

Conversation street [ ].

123093

A still from episode 1's Conversation Street

In this segment, usually around 10 to 20 minutes into the show and lasting 5 to 10 minutes, the presenters often discuss the motoring news/topics and the recent events. The segment is always introduced by Richard Hammond and is accompanied by a 10 second title which features black silhouettes of the presenters against a white background. The title screen varies from episode-to-episode; for example, the title screens have, in the past, featured Clarkson in high-heels, Hammond with a bird on his arm, and the presenters with sombreros.

Celebrity Segments [ ]

For each series a new celebrity segment would be introduced however, they proved to not last long. Series 1 featured Celebrity Brain Crash , which was replaced in series 2 with Celebrity Face Off .

Celebrity Brain Crash (Season 1) [ ]

In this segment, usually around 30 to 40 minutes into the show and lasting from one to five minutes. The presenters introduce a celebrity to arrive into the tent for an interview. The celebrity always begins outside of the tent and mostly were 'killed' before they enter the tent. Guests on Celebrity Brain Crash have included Simon Pegg , Jeremy Renner, Charlize Theron, and Armie Hammer. The segment always ends with James asking, "So, does that mean he/she/they isn't/aren't coming on then?" then Richard implies.

Celebrity Face Off (Season 2) [ ]

In series 2, Celebrity Face Off was introduced. In the segment, two celebrities had their similarities. It is interviewed by Clarkson before competing against each other in a timed lap around a circuit located near the studio tent to determine whosever had their fastest lap. Participants use a Jaguar F-Type to complete their laps. The guests include Dominic Cooper, David Hasselhoff, Hugh Bonneville, Kiefer Sutherland, Paris Hilton, and more. Most said celebrities lapped with the automatic gearbox with other also use the flappy-paddles.

The Eboladrome [ ]

The Grand Tour's test track, which is the venue for most car reviews and the track around which lap times are completed, is nicknamed the Eboladrome , for it's resemblance to the Ebola virus. The track is located in Wroughton, at an used British Royal Air Force base. [1] The track is not used for the show's Celebrity Face Off segment.

The track features prominent landmarks, such as Old Lady's House (which has an unexploded WW-II bomb right next to it), the Isn't Straight , Substation , Your Name Here , and Field of Sheep .

Lap Times [ ]

After reviews have finished, The Grand Tour team put their cars around the Eboladrome, their official test track, to see which can achieve the fastest lap time. In series 1, each lap time was completed by The American, a fictionalised version of retired NASCAR driver Mike Skinner (dubbed as the American ). In series 2, however, Skinner was replaced by British racing driver Abbie Eaton .

Locations [ ]

The following is a list of locations in which The Grand Tour has filmed for Series 1 :

  • Southern California, USA
  • Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Nashville, USA
  • Stuttgart, Germany
  • Rotterdam, Netherlands
  • Lapland, Finland
  • Loch Ness, Scotland
  • Whitby, England
  • Dubai, United Arab Emirates

From Series 2 to Series 3 , only one location was used:

  • The Cotswolds, United Kingdom

Following the conclusion of the third series, the shows will no longer feature a studio in any capacity, instead taking place entirely on filming location.

Format Change (Series 4 - 5) [ ]

From the fourth series until it's final series, the show's well established format was majorly overhauled. The format, of studio segments interlinking pre-produced films, had been a staple of The Grand Tour's first three series and of Clarkson, Hammond, and May's work on the first twenty two seasons of the revived Top Gear .

Thee are the major changes, includes:

Studio Links [ ]

For the duration of Clarkson, Hammond, and May's tenure on the revived Top Gear and The Grand Tour, a studio had been used as a way to link between various pre-produced films. From The Grand Tour's fourth season, this studio link was completely eliminated.

Standalone Segments [ ]

As a consequence of the abolition of the studio links, the trio's regular standalone segments were removed. This included the power laps around both Top Gear's original test track in Dunsfold and The Grand Tour's eboladrome , and the various celebrity-related segments, including Top Gear's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car and The Grand Tour's Celebrity Brain Crash and Celebrity Face Off. Altogether we're dropped.

Special Episodes [ ]

The removal of both the studio links and the standalone segments were a consequence of the larger transition of the show away from smaller films contained within individual episodes towards larger-scale episode-long films, more commonly referred to as specials .

The weekly episode had been officially scraped in-favour of the specials usually by one or two episodes per year, these said specials now aired at random at various times in the said year.

Clarkson, Hammond, and May’s Grand Tour Tenure Is Coming to an End

The Grand Tour’s end comes just weeks after the BBC indefinitely shut down Top Gear.

NicoDeMattia

The old Top Gear trio of Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond, and James May will be hitting your screen as the hosts of The Grand Tour for the final time in 2024. The two final episodes have now been filmed, taking place in Mauritania and Zimbabwe, where the trio we've grown to love will close a chapter that's been three decades in the making.

“We’re done. I have reviewed cars on TV since 1989. That’s 34 years. And after next year, I won’t be doing that any more," Clarkson told The Times .

Since The Grand Tour launched in 2016, after Clarkson was fired from Top Gear for punching a producer, it's gone through several changes. First, it was essentially a Top Gear recreation, with celebrity interviews and an in-studio live show. Then they tightened it up by ditching the celebrity stuff. Eventually, they ditched the live show altogether and just made feature-length specials. And while none of The Grand Tour's iterations managed to capture the magic of Top Gear at its best , it was still one of the most watched shows on Amazon Prime . Millions of people tuned in to watch the automotive equivalent of the Three Stooges (and I mean that as a grand compliment).

<em>Getty</em>

All three hosts have their own projects to pursue outside of The Grand Tour anyway. Clarkson has his farm show and May has a travel show, both of which are also on Amazon Prime , while Hammond still does a lot of work for DriveTribe , while also presenting other TV programs. So they'll still be around, even though The Grand Tour won't be.

This news also comes just a couple of weeks after the BBC decided to indefinitely shut down Top Gear . After host Freddie Flintoff's accident during filming and the subsequent settlement, the BBC decided against renewing the show. Clarkson doesn't blame the most recent trio of Top Gear hosts for not wanting to return, either, specifically Flintoff.

"Richard Hammond was always keen to get back to work [following a crash], whereas Freddie isn’t," Clarkson told The Sun . "I don’t blame him. I know what happened on that awful day and it was horrific."

<em>Getty</em>

Clarkson even said that anyone who wants to take over in Flintoff's spot would come across as "heartless."

In a matter of weeks, the world learned that the two most entertaining car shows on TV are shutting down. We all knew this day was coming soon, as the original Top Gear gang are all either in their sixties or getting quite close, but it's still a little sad to see them go. Sure, their most recent work pales in comparison to the shows from their prime but, like most millennial car nerds, Clarkson, Hammond, and May made an indelible impression on me and the way I look at cars, and I'm sure I'm not alone on that one. Thanks for the memories, chaps.

The 10 Best Episodes Of Top Gear Every Gearhead Should Watch

T he BBC may have canceled "Top Gear," but it remains one of the best car shows to watch, even in 2024 . Of course, this is in reference to the "Top Gear" revival that began in 2002. The series dates back to the 1970s, but it didn't really catch on as a global phenomenon until Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman gave it some extra juice around the turn of the century. It has a vibrant visual style and features such an eclectic assortment of vehicles that even the most seasoned enthusiasts can find something to learn. That's not even getting into the show's excellent sense of humor, particularly when it comes to the camaraderie between the main crew.  "Top Gear" presenters regularly perform memorable stunts or race exceptionally powerful vehicles, so it's easy to see how the renewed series could get well over 200 episodes out of such exciting premises.

Whether you're considering a rewatch or wanting to get into the show for the first time, it can be daunting going all the way back to 2002 to watch every single episode. That's why we've assembled a list of the series' 10 greatest episodes (in no particular order) that any gearhead should see at least once. If these episodes catch your fancy, you can naturally peruse others and go through the remainder of the series at your leisure. It's not like there's much long-form storytelling at play, so you can jump in and out in whatever way feels most comfortable to you.

Vietnam Special (Season 12, Episode 8)

Honestly, a list of the 10 best "Top Gear" episodes could be entirely populated by its various specials. Every so often, the show would unveil a special edition episode where the presenters go on a road trip in a ridiculous vehicle. Usually, they're given a ludicrously low amount of money and have to scrounge up a car to reach the destination. They're honestly a lot of fun, but in the interest of providing a well-rounded collection of great "Top Gear" episodes, this list only contains one of these specials, and it's Season 12's "Vietnam Special."

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May are plopped in Saigon and must make their way to Ha Long City in eight days. It may not seem too bad, especially when they're initially given 15 million Vietnamese dong, but the presenters (as well as viewers at home) soon learn that's only around $1,000 USD. As such, they can only acquire motorbikes, but that simply provides a more intimate journey as they traverse the country.

"Vietnam Special" is widely regarded as one of the show's best moments. In fact, it's the second highest-rated episode on IMDb, with a rating of 9.4/10. The trio eventually returns to the country for "The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen," only they begin in Cambodia and end in Vietnam, but the special episode clearly made a mark on them and audiences for them to venture back.

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video , Apple TV , Tubi

Reliant Robin Space Shuttle Challenge (Season 9, Episode 4)

The Reliant Robin is widely considered to be one of the worst three-wheeled vehicles on the market . Given how the presenters of "Top Gear" enjoy a bit of fun, it should come as no surprise to hear the car has been featured on the show on numerous occasions. One notable instance comes in Season 15, Episode 1 when Jeremy Clarkson takes one for a drive and repeatedly flips it over. However, the team took the Reliant Robin to the next level before that even happened — in Season 9, Episode 4 — "Reliant Robin Space Shuttle Challenge."

The episode is precisely what the title suggests. The crew attempts to transform a Reliant Robin into an honest-to-goodness space shuttle, and the kicker is that they only have 12 days to do it. It sounds like a recipe for disaster, and that's because it largely is. When launch day finally arrives, things seem fortuitous for a brief period, but while lift-off goes well enough, the fuel tank fails to separate from the shuttle, bringing the whole thing crashing to the ground in a fiery inferno.

BBC America had a chance to catch up with James May about the whole ordeal, and he joked, "It explained very neatly for the viewers why Britain doesn't have a space program." Undoubtedly, no one has ever asked anyone to try to get a Reliant Robin into space, but that's what makes "Top Gear" special — they do the recklessly needless for millions of people's enjoyment.

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video , Apple TV , Tubi

Building Motor Homes (Season 15, Episode 4)

In the same vein as "Top Gear" presenters doing something ill-advised, the Season 15 episode "Building Motor Homes" sees them turn various cars into camper vans. That doesn't just mean turning them into vehicles that merely look like motorhomes — they must be actually livable, complete with restrooms and the means to cook.

The episode has garnered high marks on IMDb , with one reviewer insisting it's "one of the most hilarious episodes of this show besides from the specials." It's easy to see why, as the vehicles turn out rather odd-looking, particularly the one spearheaded by Jeremy Clarkson. His motorhome has a full three stories, with the second story dedicated to a Japanese contemplation area. Of course, constructing these monstrosities is only half the battle. Once they're done, the presenters are told they must drive them for a little getaway, which is amusing all on its own.

As one might surmise, Clarkson's three-story camper van doesn't fare too well, as it's ultimately blown over. By the end of the episode, the vehicle's destroyed after falling over a cliff when a prank by James May and Richard Hammond goes sideways. It's an installment that really summarizes the ethos of "Top Gear" — the presenters put so much effort into something that doesn't matter by the end.

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video , Apple TV

Season 25, Episode 4

After years of courting controversy, Jeremy Clarkson physically assaulted "Top Gear" producer Oisin Tymon.  He was ultimately fired from the show , but the series carried on with other presenters, including former "Friends" star Matt LeBlanc. Some fans may have felt inclined to tune out after Clarkson's departure, but there were plenty of gems during this era, including Season 25, Episode 4.

A major driving force of the episode involves LeBlanc testing a new Dodge car called the Demon, which boasts greater acceleration than anything manufactured by the top dogs in the industry, including Lamborghini. Racing such a feat of engineering would be cool enough on its own, but the episode also sees LeBlanc help NASA land one of its research planes. Even amid all the adrenaline, there are plenty of humorous moments that stack up against Clarkson's era.

It may have taken long-time fans some time to get used to the new dynamics on the show, but this episode exemplifies everything LeBlanc and his team brought to the series. Redditor u/xiaodown praised this episode: "It took a couple of seasons, but this group has come into its own, and it's fantastic." After 25 seasons and a change in presenters, Season 25 proved "Top Gear" still had a few tricks up its sleeve.

Amphibious Car Challenge (Season 8, Episode 3)

There are good reasons why amphibious vehicles haven't caught on in the mainstream. Even when the Amphicar came to fruition, it was plagued by major issues . Still, it makes for good TV fodder, which is why Season 8, Episode 3 — "Amphibious Car Challenge" — remains such a delight to watch.

The episode sees Jeremy Clarkson and the other two presenters attempt to turn normal cars into something that can work on both land and sea. The real highlight is seeing all three of them attempt to get their creations to traverse a body of water, as each faces a myriad of issues. The installment was clearly popular, as it received a sequel on Season 10 where the team tries to do the same thing. Only this time, they attempt to cross the English channel.

"Amphibious Car Challenges" absolutely deserves a spot on the list of the best "Top Gear" episodes, in part because of what Redditor u/phyrephawckce has to say. "I wasn't sold on watching the show until I saw the one where they turned cars into boats," they wrote. "I know there are better episodes, but that one got me hooked because I don't think they did anything else like that up until that point." It's an ideal entry point for newcomers to "Top Gear" because of how it showcases the ingenuity and personalities of the presenters.

Police Car Challenge (Season 11, Episode 1)

One of the most amusing aspects of any given "Top Gear" episode is to see how the presenters go completely left field to try to win a challenge. That's on full display in Season 11's "Police Car Challenge," where everyone's given a small amount of money to purchase a dinky car to customize into a police cruiser. The best part is none of them are really concerned about trying to get close to a realistic police car. Instead, they just want silly gadgets to make them as unwieldy as possible. They're more suited for an installment of "Wacky Races" than catching criminals.

For example, Jeremy Clarkson outfits his car with a spike strip he can deploy to halt any vehicles coming up behind him. However, in the end, Richard Hammond emerges victorious ... probably. Hammond was supposedly one point ahead, but he ate the paper before it was made official. Of course, creating custom police cars is only part of this great episode. Another portion focuses on the team recognizing that fuel prices have gone through the roof, and they handle this information in a manner befitting "Top Gear."

At the end of the day, "Top Gear" is a show about a few chaps seemingly giving in to any intrusive thoughts they have concerning cars. They rarely take anything seriously, and it makes for some excellent television.

Nissan GT-R Vs Japanese Bullet Train Epic Race (Season 11, Episode 4)

"Top Gear" fans often debate the merits of each episode while ranking the ones they believe to be the best of the very best. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but when looking through one Reddit thread asking people for their top five episodes, some common answers materialize. One episode that gets quite a few shoutouts comes from Season 11, Episode 4 — "Nissan GT-R vs Japanese Bullet Train Epic Race."

Bullet trains are magnificent feats of engineering, so Jeremy Clarkson thought he'd test their mettle by racing one in a Nissan GT-R. Richard Hammond and James May have the far more desirable task of simply hanging out inside the train and going on a nice little journey, but even that comes with its own perils when they find themselves separated. Clarkson wins by just a hair, but it's hard to argue that Japan has some of the best public transportation in the world.

Any episode that espouses the virtue of bullet trains is all right in our book, especially since even faster models have come out since the episode first aired. Some of the fastest passenger trains in the world have exceeded 200 mph, and it would be a treat to see someone try to race one of these.

Did The Communists Make A Good Car? - Ford Fiesta With The Royal Marines (Season 12, Episode 6)

Some of the most exciting and humorous bits from "Top Gear" come from the episodes where they have to make their own cars or race in extravagant fashion. However, it's also nice to see an episode where they delve into the history of a certain subject, which is the case for Season 12, Episode 6 — "Did The Communists Make A Good Car? — Ford Fiesta With The Royal Marines." James May and Jeremy Clarkson are tasked with determining if there are any vehicles made in communist countries that pass muster, and while it's somewhat educational, there are still ample zingers.

That's only part of why this episode is worth checking out, as Clarkson also puts a Ford Fiesta through the wringer to see what kind of conditions it can withstand. This involves teaming up with some Marines who mock-storm a beach with the Fiesta in tow. It looks completely out of place, which is 100% the charm of such a sequence.

Anyone interested in learning more about the history of certain cars might want to check out a related series, "James May's Cars of the People." That show can be accessed on Amazon Prime Video, Pluto TV, and The Roku Channel.

Bugatti Veyron Vs. Typhoon Jet Fighter (Season 10, Episode 3)

A common feature of any "Top Gear" racing segment is that Jeremy Clarkson gets some cool car to use while James May and Richard Hammond get something you'd assume is faster. The thing is, May and Hammond usually have to go through more annoying, occasionally bureaucratic procedures to get their vehicle to take off. On Season 10, Episode 3 — "Bugatti Veyron vs. Typhoon Jet Fighter" — the pair get caught up doing so many pre-flight procedures in their jet fighter that Clarkson manages to take an early lead. Clarkson was so assured of his victory at one point that he even stopped for some coffee.

Clarkson emerges victorious in his Bugatti Veyron, which he even refers to in the episode as the best car ever made. It's such an amazing vehicle that it even took home the "Top Gear" prize for being the best car of the decade. But this episode holds greater significance than showing off a true top car — it also marked the first time Clarkson had gotten behind the wheel of a vehicle after suffering a horrific crash in a Vampire dragster. If there was ever an occasion to relax with some coffee in the middle of the race, it would be for this race right here.

Caravan Holiday (Season 8, Episode 6)

As you've probably learned from this list, "Top Gear" is an incredibly funny show, and its best episodes exemplify that humor. Few places do it better than Season 8's "Top Gear Sets a World Record with an F1 Car," when Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May go on their own holiday along with Top Gear Dog to understand why caravans cause traffic jams. The episode becomes a total comedy of errors, as they continually encounter problems, including one moment where Hammond and Top Gear Dog are "kidnapped" by a fan.

Their journey ends in the only way appropriate for the "Top Gear" presenters: The caravan burns down. But they still have to tow it to complete the trek. London's Evening Standard later reported how the blaze was staged, and even though the presenters may try to present themselves as incompetent, we'd like to think they wouldn't be careless enough to burn something to the ground through negligence.

It all made for one stellar episode that has earned a spot on many best-of lists.  earned spots on many lists of the best "Top Gear" episodes. MotorTrend actually summed up the appeal of this episode well in its review: "It's the perfect distillation of the show's tagline, 'ambitious but rubbish.'" There are plenty of other ambitious "Top Gear" episodes that don't quite stick the landing, but these 10 are a good place to start for anyone — from newbies to longtime fans.

The Grand Tour’s fate ‘revealed’ after Jeremy Clarkson’s exit in final episode

Jeremy Clarkson

The Grand Tour has reportedly been given a huge lifeline, with plans to develop a fresh version without Jeremy Clarkson .

The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host, 63, and his co-stars Richard Hammond and James May have filmed their final special of the Amazon Prime series, after it was revealed in November that it was coming to an end.

The trio, who first hit our screens together in 2003 on  Top Gear , announced their exit from the series in November last year, however, it could be coming back with a fresh presenting team.

According to reports, Studio Lambert – the production company who brought us The Traitors and Squid Game: The Challenge – has landed the contract to develop a fresh version of the motoring show.

An ‘update to the format’ is being prepped with new presenting talent, although has not been formally greenlit, Broadcast claims.

Clarkson, Hammond and May first launched the series in 2016, with their penultimate episode The Sand Job having aired earlier this year following a trip to Mauritania, and a final in Zimbabwe yet to reach our screens.

As the news of The Grand Tour coming to a grinding halt was announced in November, it was said to be ‘the end of an era’.

A source revealed at the time: ‘It’s a surprising decision and everyone realises it very much marks the end of an era for the three presenters.

‘The Grand Tour is one of Prime Video’s most watched shows and Jeremy, James and Richard have a devoted following.’

The insider continued to  The Sun : ‘But the guys have made no bones about the fact they’re all advancing in years and they have lots of other projects to pursue.

‘They just felt like the time was right and wanted to go out on a high when the show remained popular.’

But, it may not be the end of Clarkson, Hammond, 54, and May, 61, on our screens together.

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

When asked if they’d reunite on another project, May said: ‘I wouldn’t rule it out, but you do have to bear in mind that we’re all getting on a bit.

‘We’ve got two (episodes) in the bag, there’s one coming out very soon, and another coming out a bit after that, but what happens between now and then we’ll have to wait and see.’

Clarkson also spoke about The Grand Tour ending and branded himself ‘unfit, fat and old’ when speaking about why he was done with the ‘immensely physical’ show.

‘I’ve driven cars higher than anyone else and further north than anyone else,’ he told The Times.

‘We’ve done everything you can do with a car.

‘When we had meetings about what to do next, people just threw their arms in the air.’

Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May

The future of The Grand Tour was thrown into doubt following Clarkson’s vile comments in a newspaper column about Meghan Markle  in January 2023, in which the broadcaster said he dreamed of the Duchess being paraded through the streets and publicly shamed.

It became Ipso’s most complained-about article after its publication, receiving more than 25,100 complaints, with Clarkson later issuing a lengthy apology to the Suits actress and her husband Prince Harry, and claims emerged that  Amazon reportedly ‘parted ways’ with him .

Meanwhile, Clarkson’s adventures at his Diddly Squat farm will continue to air on Amazon Prime for season four, while the third instalment of Clarkson’s Farm premieres next month.

Metro.co.uk has approached Studio Lambert for comment.

The Grand Tour is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

The Grand Tour episode rankings and how they compare to Top Gear

top gear grand tour episodes

With 10 episodes of The Grand Tour now available to stream on Amazon Prime, we thought it would be good opportunity to see what all of you fans thought of the episodes – and check out how they compare (ratings wise) against previous episodes of Top Gear .

You see, every single episode of Top Gear and Grand Tour carries with it a star rating out of 10, which are determined by hundreds of thousands of votes placed by TopGearbox readers just like you.

So without further ado, here we go!

1. Episode 6 – Happy Finiish Christmas 9.3/10

The Grand Tour’s Christmas special “Happy Finiish Christmas” might be their highest rated episode so far with a score of 9.3 out of 10, but it was still comprehensively beaten by some 24 episodes of Top Gear, including the Africa Special (9.6) and Supercars in Spain (9.6) , and the Britcar 24 Hour (9.6) episode. The GT-R race across Japan (9.5) was also voted better, along with the Vietnam Special (9.5) , Bolivia Special (9.5) , Caravan Holiday (9.5) episode, the Patagonia Special (9.4) , the Greatest road in the world (9.4) episode, the Burma Special (9.3) and Jeremy’s Bugatti Veyron race against Richard and James in the Cessna 182 (9.3) .

2. Episode 3 – Opera, Art and Donuts 8.9/10

The second most popular episode of The Grand Tour so far is Episode 3 – Opera, Art and Donuts with a respectable score of 8.9/10. Despite this, it was still behind an additional 46 episodes of Top Gear – including the Polar Special (9.2) , the original America Special (9.2) , the £1000 Police Car Challenge (9.2) , Jeremy racing Richard and James to Oslo in the McMerc SLR (9.1) , the Australian Road Trip (9.0) , the RWD Coupe Challenge (9.0) , the £5000 Lorry episode (9.0) and even Top Gear Ground Force (9.0) .

3. Episode 5 – Morroccan Roll 8.8/10

In at third place is Episode 5 of The Grand Tour, Morroccan Roll , with a score of 8.8 out of 10. Between it and the episode above, sit 7 episodes of Top Gear – including the Ambulance episode (8.8) , Jeremy testing the Touring Disco Volante in Italy (8.8) , the Rallycross episode (8.8) , the Aston Martin DB9 race to Monte Carlo (8.8) and Jeremy’s original test of the Ariel Atom (8.8) .

4. Episodes 7/8 – The Beach (Buggy) Boys Part 1 & 2 8.7/10

Episodes 7 & 8 of The Grand Tour “The Beach (Buggy) Boys Part 1 & 2” were both rated 8.7 out of 10, meaning they sit behind an additional 10 episodes of Top Gear. These include The Winter Olympics (8.8) , Jeremy’s Koenigsegg CC8S power test (8.8) , Richard’s Land Rover Defender tribute (8.7) , the stripped-out track car episode (8.7) , Mobility Scooters (8.7) and James May’s maxxing of the Bugatti Veyron in Germany (8.7) .

5. Episode 1 – The Holy Trinity 8.6/10

Some might be surprised to see The Grand Tour’s opening episode so far down this list. It scored just 8.6 out of 10, or an additional 13 places below the Beach Buggy episode. Higher ranking Top Gear episodes include the £100 Car Challenge (8.7) , the second-hand BMW 325i episode (8.7) , Jeremy and James in Beijing (8.6) , the boy’s economy race to Blackpool (8.6) , James flying his airship caravan (8.6) , the Ferrari Daytona VS XSR 48 Speed Boat (8.6) episode and the one where they played Toyota Aygo Football (8.6) .

6. Episode 9 – Berks To The Future 8.3/10

Episode 9 of The Grand Tour “Berks to the Future” sits an additional 18 places down the list, with a score of 8.3 out of 10. Sitting in between are classic Top Gear episodes such as the McLaren MP4-12C vs Ferrari 458 (8.5) , the hilarious Convertible People Carrier episode (8.4) , the indestructible Toyota Hilux (8.4) , the Botswana Special (8.4) , Richard driving an F1 Car (8.4) , the boys testing off-road toys (8.4) , the Alfa Romeo 159 against a man (8.4) and the Lamborghini episode (8.4) .

7. Episode 2 – Operation Desert Stumble 8.1/10

“Operation Desert Stumble” was met with mixed reviews, so it is understandible that it is located towards the tail end of this list, with a score of 8.1 out of 10. Some loved it, some hated it. Still, it rated lower than Top Gear’s drive time radio show episode (8.3) , Richard getting hypnotized (8.2) , Jeremy testing the Ferrari Enzo (8.2) , Jeremy and Richard filming the Sweeny movie (8.2) , James testing the Ariel Atom V8 (8.2) and James driving up an Icelandic volcano (8.1) .

8. Episode 10 – Dumb Fight at the O.K. Coral 8.0/10

It seems even less of you enjoyed the latest Grand Tour episode, “Dumb Fight at the O.K Coral – scoring just 8.0 out of 10. This means it sits below Jeremy and James racing a Yacht against a Toyota Corolla (8.0) , Top Gear of the Pops (8.0) , Jeremy and Damon Hill comparing the Aston Martin Vanquish and Ferrari 575 (8.0) , the boys going to Iceland in convertibles (8.0) , James taking racing lessons with Jackie Stewart (8.0) , the Rally Team vs girls getting ready episode (8.0) and even the one where Jeremy drove the Land Rover Discovery to the top of a mountain in Scotland (8.0) .

9. Episode 4 – Enviro-mental 7.8/10

Finally, we have the least favourite episode so far – “Enviro-mental”. This one scored just 7.8 out of 10, meaning there are some 19 Top Gear episodes between it and the next highest Grand Tour episode. Such episodes include the Ferrari Scaglietti VS a plane to Verbier (8.0) , the boys building a Caterham Seven (8.0) , the boys using tractors to plant oil seed (8.0) , the £1500 Porsche Challenge (8.0) , Sabine Schmitz driving a van around the Nurburgring (7.9) , Jeremy testing the Tesla Roadster (7.9) and even the much hated India Special (7.9) .

So what do you think? Do you think the people have got it right with their ratings, or do some of The Grand Tour episodes deserve to be rated more highly? We’ll check in again after all 12 episodes have aired, but for now you can let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

The Grand Tour will be better and better. Fact is Top Gear BBC owes a lot to Matt Le Blanc universal appeal and the behind the scene crew members to carry on. The other two, Rory Reid and Chris Harris are not even a patch even with Richard Hammond or James May. Many of my friends can’t stand them either.

' src=

You have to think that with Wilman and Porter behind the scenes, what we’re seeing now is pretty much what would have been on the Beeb. Minus the tent bits. But the writing, comments, and films are from the same teams. Bearing in mind the age and physical limits of the boys.

' src=

Some of the lowest rated Top Gear episodes like the £1500 Porsche Challenge, or the superb India Special are among my most favourite episodes! I think my all time favourites are the Polar special and the Amazon in second-hand off-roaders episode. Richard Hammond fear of insects is to this date the funniest thing available on TV. All the cheap car challenge were superb.

Top Gear was best from its 6th to 16th seasons. Then they started to decline a bit. But they still were amazing until the 20th season. They were becoming more noticeably scripted ad fake. Trying too hard to get a laugh is never a good thing.

The new show gave them a boost, they still have great episodes. But it’s understandable that it will never top what was the peak of their careers.

' src=

Old TG was like a really comfortable sweater. You knew it was getting a little thin and made you a little itchy but you always felt good when you put it on. TGT is a more expensive sweater, in the same colour as your old sweater, but it is a little tight at the elbows and pulls a little funny when you bend over.

In a few years, that new sweater will be worn in nicely and you will hardly remember a time you didn’t love it.

tldr: bias of new show living up to old show standards is present now.

A more realistic comparison is how they ranked next to Evans and Leblanc. That’s the real competition, mate.

' src=

Well the highest rated episode from Series 23 is rated 6.1 so there’s not much of a story in that! We might do a comparo once TGT Series 1 finished, if everyone wants to see TG get smashed.

' src=

houndreds of thousands of votes? this is hardly believable, can you prove your statement?

This website has been collecting votes for 9 years – is it really that hard to believe?

' src=

Hardly a fair comparison , because there is also a lot of top gear episodes that are lower than the 7.8 from the grand tour.

Of course – but I thought it was interesting to see how they sat in relation to the older episodes. All things considered, they’ve done well.

' src=

Enviro-mental was way better than the ratings indicate, it’s one of my favorites of the series!

' src=

This; I was surprised that it was last. I’d say that ep5 was probably the least great (note how I don’t say worst).

The Grand Tour Is Ending – The End Of An Era As Top Gear Finishes Too

The iconic motoring shows, ‘The Grand Tour’ and ‘Top Gear,’ are reaching their final laps, marking the end of a significant era in automotive television. As Jeremy Clarkson , James May , and Richard Hammond conclude their journey with ‘The Grand Tour,’ the BBC has also decided to put ‘Top Gear’ on hold.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Grand Tour Finale: Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have wrapped up filming their last episode of ‘The Grand Tour’ after seven years on Amazon Prime. The final special, filmed in Zimbabwe, is set to air next year.
  • Top Gear on Hiatus: Following an accident involving presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff, the BBC has announced that ‘Top Gear’ will not be returning “for the foreseeable future.” The network is considering options for a new version of the show.
  • Evolution and Controversy: The trio started with ‘Top Gear’ in 2003, making it a global success despite controversies. After leaving the BBC in 2015, they joined Amazon Prime, where ‘The Grand Tour’ became a hit. Other projects by the hosts, including Clarkson’s Farm and May’s Our Man In… , continue on Amazon.

The automotive world is witnessing the end of an era with the conclusion of two of its most iconic shows: The Grand Tour and Top Gear. After a thrilling seven-year journey on Amazon Prime, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond have filmed their final episode of The Grand Tour. The trio, known for their dynamic chemistry and adventurous spirits, recently returned from Zimbabwe, where they shot the last special, scheduled to be released next year.

top gear grand tour episodes

The end of The Grand Tour aligns with the news of ‘Top Gear’ taking an indefinite break. The BBC’s decision comes in the wake of presenter Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff’s accident during filming last year. The network is exploring options for a new incarnation of the show, acknowledging the need for a refreshed approach in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

Clarkson, May, and Hammond have been synonymous with Top Gear since 2003, steering the show to immense popularity globally. Despite its success, the show wasn’t without its controversies, most notably leading to Clarkson’s departure from the BBC in 2015 following a dispute. Hammond and May followed suit, paving the way for their next venture with Amazon Prime and the birth of The Grand Tour.

The Grand Tour has enjoyed five successful series, becoming one of Amazon’s best-performing original series. Its format, coupled with the hosts’ unique blend of humour, insight, and adventure, captivated a vast audience, making it a staple in automotive entertainment.

Beyond The Grand Tour, Clarkson, May, and Hammond have not slowed down. Their individual projects, such as Clarkson’s Farm and Our Man In… by May, continue to entertain and inform on Amazon Prime.

As fans prepare to bid farewell to these groundbreaking shows, the impact and legacy of The Grand Tour and Top Gear remain indelible in the world of motoring entertainment. Their departure signals not just the end of an era but also the beginning of a new chapter in automotive broadcasting.
