Surf Morocco Guide

When it’s getting colder in Europe, think of surfing in Morocco for your surf escape.

coastine morocco

Morocco, with its sun-kissed coastline and diverse landscapes, is a dream come true for surfers. Although it’s a part of Africa, its surfing scenes have created a significant mark on the European surf trail. Thousands of Europeans flock to Morocco, seeking sun, surf, and the refreshing chill of Atlantic waters.

Morocco is the land of the right-hand point breaks. They seem to be everywhere, almost as common a beach breaks in southwest France .

Before we dive into de details of surfing in Morocco watch this video about surfing in Morocco.

Morocco’s Surfing Dynamics

As you saw in the video, Morocco’s coastline is aligned beautifully to catch the long-range, North Atlantic swells, which roll in on a NW trajectory. With moderate NW to NE winds blowing, surfers often find solace in spots that offer protection against these winds. The seasonal changes between the strong swells and winds of winter, and the slightly calmer summer, make it essential to understand the surfing rhythm of Morocco.

The mornings in Morocco’s beaches are marked by summer’s N or NW winds. These winds keep the exposed beaches light from onshore conditions. But the desert’s influence is strong. Early morning land breezes heat up quickly, and by afternoon, sea breezes take over. In summer, the land temperatures can go up to an average of 26°C in the north and can hit a scorching 39°C in Dakhla.

Surfers, especially those traveling, need to ensure they download tidal information before their trip, as getting reliable data can be tricky on the move. We’ll provide with some data later on.

Morocco delivers her most tasty waves during fall, winter and spring.

And forget your thick wetsuits. Morocco’s pleasant climate and exposure to the North Atlantic’s swells make it an attractive surfing destination, especially given it’s close proximity to Europe. A wetsuit is still needed when surfing. But outside the water you can just wear your boardshorts or bikini and your flipflops. Even in winter.

Northern Morocco: A Cold Surf Haven

For those venturing into Morocco during the winter surfing season, Northern Morocco is your go-to place. The cold weather, combined with 1000kms of NW-facing beach breaks, is a mesmerizing sight. Although the cross-shore and closed-out waves can be a tad intimidating, spots like Medhiya offer wind and swell protection, thanks to its long rivermouth jetties. Rabat’s Doura is another hidden gem, with multiple slabby reef breaks waiting to be explored.

Central Morocco: A Blend of Adventure and Relaxation

As you journey south from El Jadida, Central Morocco unveils a mix of rugged coastlines and enticing beaches. The surfing scene here is lively, with places like Safi’s ‘Garden’ becoming a surfer’s playground. For those in search of a unique surfing experience, “Surfing Park Sidi Bouzide” should be on the list.

The highway inland from Safi leads you to Essaouira, a former hippie town that has maintained its old-world charm. Here, you’ll find surfers battling strong cross-shore winds. But the reward? Gorgeous reef breaks, points, and beach breaks with more swell. Not to forget, the tiny fishing villages, which add to the rustic charm of this region.

Taghazout: The Surfing Epicenter

Taghazout has long been a surfer’s mecca. Its legendary waves like the ‘Ikhf’nout’ and the mesmerizing ‘Anchor Point’ beckon surfers from all around. Offering waves that are perfect for both beginners and intermediates, this region provides a safe environment to hone your surfing skills.

Discovering the Waves: Surfing in Southern Morocco

Morocco’s southern coastline stretches across a vast expanse, offering surf enthusiasts a dreamlike combination of the Sahara desert meeting the Atlantic’s crisp waves. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a curious newbie, the unique geography and climate of this region promise an unparalleled experience.

The southern belt of Morocco reaches out from the bustling city of Agadir, navigating its way along a disputed border with Western Sahara, and further extending 800kms down towards Mauritania. It’s not just any stretch; it’s an untouched wilderness – vast, empty, and ready for exploration. In between the enormous dunes and wild beaches are towns like Sidi Ifni, Tan Tan, Tarfaya, and Dakhla, which have become surf hotspots over the years.

Surf Morocco; when to go?

October to April is the best period to surf in Morocco. With December, January and February being the pick of the months. So, winter stands out as an ideal time for surfing here. Although Dakhla is far removed from the Atlantic storms, the season promises the most consistent swells. Moreover, the lighter winds of winter allow surfers to make the most of the waves. While the desert can get quite chilly, Dakhla offers a milder climate, with temperatures averaging around 29°C.

Openly exposed to the Atlantic Ocean, Morocco’s coast receives an abundance of northwest-to-north swell up to 5 meters during these wintermonths. The Northwest-facing coast around Casablanca and Rabat receives more swell than the southwest-facing points as Anchor Point near Taghazout.

Surf spots Morocco. Best places to surf.

You’ll find the the main surf spots around Essaouira and Taghazout . Discover where you can surf best in Morocco with the Surf Guide on this page.

Surfing in Essaouira

Travel guides always recommend Essaouira. It’s a beautiful place for tourists and surfers in Morocco. It has an authentic Medina, harbour and a fort build in the 18th century. And Essaouira is on the  UNESCO World Heritage list .

The waves are often at best in the mornings. The mornings are often quiet. In the afternoon the kite- and windsurfers will take over because of the stronger winds.

Best surf spots Essaouira

  • Safi .    Safi is just north of Essaouira. It’s a big and sensitive beach break with rocky slabs offering powerful and curly waves. To be checked with a little swell. With big swells it’s al speed and power. With tubing waves rival those of Jeffrey Bay in South Africa. It can be populated by a Quiksilver training camp.
  • Essaouira bay. An ideal surf spot for beginners and relaxed surfers, on condition that the swell is big enough.
  • Sidi Kaouki .  This beach break is located at 25 km south from Essaouira, on the road to Agadir and Taghazout.
  • Imessouane . Perfectly located between Essaouira and Taghazout. This is a smooth longboard wave that rarely gets messy, or big, and peels over soft sand for 300 meters. And an easy paddle out. Making this a beginner and intermediate haven.

Surfing in Taghazout

Deep in the heart of North Africa there is a fishinh vilage called Taghazout. Just north of Agadir. Which comes alive each winter with the sound of punding pointbreaks and surf banter. It’s a beautiful place with a rich Arabic culture to add  to the magic.

Taghazout is surf, surf and surf.  Taghazout is the premium surfing destination of Morocco with some vicious surfspots, like Anchor Point.

Anchor Point is delicious right point break that looks easier than you think. Around Taghazout there are many other spots where you can surf. For each level. These breaks are in the immediate area (= walking distance) from Taghazout:

Best surf spots Taghazout

  • Killer Point. A powerful wave. Which is higher than you think.
  • La Source. A performance wave. Just a little less than tall and powerful Killer Point.
  • Mysteries. Located directly next to La Source. The waves break partly on sand. What makes things more relaxed.
  • Anchor Point. A steep take off. Powerful point break, which remains on a good day walk.
  • Hash Point. One of the most relaxed waves.
  • Panoramas. Could reasonably have some flow. But also runs a nice long right.
  • Devil’s Rock. A tough name for a break each day can be different. Right and left waves. But, in particular, a right hand.
  • Banana Beach. Here you will often find the beginners because it is a relatively easy golf.

Morocco is an all-year-round destination for great surf and great weather. That’s why Surf Maroc is open all year!

The summer months (May– September) see small to medium swells with surf mostly on the beaches and reefs on the more exposed northwest coast. This is a great time for anyone looking for fun. There are some bigger days during this time for those looking for something more challenging.

During the winter months the waves, that have made Morocco famous, come to life. There is a huge variety of surf in this area of Morocco. There are not many places like it in the world. The region has something for everyone, from ideal beginner waves to challenging reef ledges. Intermediates and those new to the sport should not be put off or worried. Due to the nature of the coastline, there is almost always somewhere sheltered and manageable, and those looking for something challenging won’t be disappointed.

Morocco is blessed with well over 300 days of sunshine a year. Between the months of November to February, there is a small chance of rain, although statistically, it is unlikely.

With such a large range and choice of waves, you may want to bring a whole quiver of boards.

To generalize, the majority of waves are right-hand point breaks from soft, slow, rolling spots to heavy, fast barrelling spots. Bring equipment to suit your ability and what you want to surf. If you don’t want to go big, your everyday board will suffice, there’s nearly always somewhere sheltered. If you do want to charge the big stuff, bring something suitable for mid-winter waves that can get up to 15ft.

At the Surf Maroc surf shop, you will be able to hire standard and premium boards – check our selection here

There is an abundance of restaurants and cafes in Taghazout. The are plenty of grocery shops selling fruit, vegetable and other essentials. There is a well-stocked pharmacy and four surf shops.

Surf Maroc surf shop offers a wide selection of surfboards, wetsuits, clothing, and a fair bit of hardware: leashes, wax, deck grips, etc

Morocco is a liberal Muslim country, and men and women are welcome to wear shorts and T-shirts.  Swimming costumes and bikinis are normal on the beach but it is advisable to cover up your arms and legs a bit when walking around town. Shorts, tees and flip flops are the norm. Trousers and jumpers are sometimes needed particularly in mid-winter when the evenings can be chilly so warm clothes are a good idea during that period.

Our food is fantastic! The food served in all our venues is amazing, homemade with fresh and seasonal products, and we cater to all diets!

Our chefs will prepare a mixture of Moroccan and international dishes every day.

Breakfast is included in all our locations. All packages, apart from Room & Breakfast, include a packed lunch and communal dinner.

Yes! Both beach towels and bath towels are provided.

Alcoholic drinks can be legally served and sold throughout the country. Morocco even produces its own range of wines and beers.

Amouage bar & kitchen is open every day from 1 pm – we offer a great selection of beers, wine and cocktails!

We understand that some people have special requirements. Let us know in advance, and we’ll do our best to make sure we have exactly what you need.

All guests should be aware that not all ‘specialized food alternatives’ are available.

All our rooms are private, with the exception of our mix-gender dorms at the Taghazout Villa and the Amouage.

The dorm rooms are reserved for guests on a surf package.

The Amouage Bar & Kitchen is open to the public from 1 pm to 9:30 pm.

And since you are part of the Surf Maroc family, you get a preferential price on the Day pass if you want to treat yourself to a chill day by the pool (200 instead of 400dhs) and at the Spa (menu available on site)

Day pass availability is set daily by management depending on hotel occupancy – it is not always available

We host communal dinners in all our locations. It’s the occasion for everyone to meet around the dinner table and dine on the terraces overlooking the surf while enjoying a drink under the stars.

The Amouage Bar & Kitchen is open to the public until 9:30 pm, you can treat yourself to an à la carte dinner and enjoy some of the chef’s specialty dish

Do not miss out our epic Surf Maroc bbq every Thursday!

Morocco is on 220 volts with two-pin round plugs.

You can arrive at any time.

It is not always possible to have your room ready before 4 pm. If you do want to arrive early and your room isn’t immediately available, start enjoying yourself anyway – we’ll take care of your bags and let you know what services are available. Check-out is officially 10 am, but if you would like a later checkout, let us know and we’ll do our best.

Please be aware that if you supply the wrong arrival or departure details and we send a transfer this will count as your transfer.

Please note that free transfers are only available from Agadir airport (if staying with us for 7 or more days on a package). If you would like to be collected from a different location, including the Agadir bus station and hotels, please make sure you book this through the Customer Portal.

No vaccinations are required for visitors to Morocco – and anti-malarial precautions are not necessary.

We have first aid equipment along with staff trained in administering first aid.

In the case of an emergency, there are hospitals and clinics in Agadir. Medical charges will apply according to the treatment received so make sure you have travel insurance before you arrive.

There is a well-stocked pharmacy in Taghazout which is open every day.

Morocco is a developing country that offers different foods, water, bacteria, and climate that you may not be used to. By taking some sensible precautions, you can help reduce the risk of getting an upset stomach which often occurs when traveling to rural areas in developing countries. Some guests have found that taking probiotics before traveling has helped to prevent gastro-related illness.

If you are pregnant, have any conditions or illness, or are generally concerned, we recommend you get in touch with your GP or travel clinic for advice before you travel.

Please note our advice is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and does not constitute medical or other professional advice.

We recommend you do not drink tap water at all in Morocco, even in hotels, as it contains much higher levels of minerals than the water in Europe.

We provide free-of-charge, safe filtered water at all our locations. We recommend that you bring your reusable water bottle to refill on-site.

We do sell glass-bottled water for 30 dirhams at our locations to help eliminate plastic bottles.

Yes! We provide free Agadir group transfer for surf package stays over 7 nights. We collect groups of up to 8 in each vehicle. On occasions, it may be necessary to wait for flights to land at similar times ( up to 30 mins ).

Please note that free transfers are only available from Agadir airport (if staying with us for 7 or more days on a surf package).

If you would like to be collected from a different location, including Agadir hotels, please make sure you book this through the Customer Portal.

We get a lot of people who visit Surf Maroc on their own and have a brilliant time – bookings for solo travelers and groups is roughly a 50-50 split. The set up at all our locations and within our surf services allows for such a truly social atmosphere that you’ll be making new friends in no time.

If you haven’t pre-booked one of our surf packages, and are staying on Room & Breakfast, but you’d like to go surfing: please let your host know by 1 pm the day before.

We will do our best to accommodate you. Please note that we can’t guarantee there will be space in any of our vans and you will be charged the local rate for those services.

We do not offer credit or refund toward pre-booked services or services part of a package but on request, we can provide you with all necessary documents you may need to claim it to your travel insurance.

If you or any other member of your party decides to cancel your confirmed booking you must notify us in writing. Your notice of cancellation will only take effect when it is received in writing by us at our offices and will be effective from the date on which we receive it.

Should one or more members of a party cancel, it may increase the per-person holiday price of those still traveling and you will be liable to pay this increase.

Since we incur costs in canceling your arrangements, you will have to pay the cancellation charges as follows:

  • More than 6 weeks: Deposit only
  • 4 – 6 weeks before arrival: 50% of holiday cost
  • 2 – 4 weeks before arrival: 75% of holiday cost
  • Less than 2 weeks before arrival: 100% of holiday cost

Coaching sessions are 2 hours long.

Lessons are given in groups ( unless individual lessons have been pre-booked ) and take place in the morning, usually from 9: 30 am.  However, the starting time remains at the discretion of the coach, that can modify it depending on the conditions of the day.

We are very sensitive about the number of people we take to a spot, and there is a maximum of eight people in a vehicle. We are legally allowed to teach at a ratio of 12 students to 1 coach but our operational average is 6 to 1. On very rare occasions we have to combine groups due to the split levels.

Those new to surfing will use soft top boards, essentially these surfboards are designed with safety in mind. They function in much the same way as a normal surfboard and are what everyone on the team chooses when the waves are small (small is good when you’re starting out!)

In group sessions, lessons take place in the morning – if you decide to join the group after lunch you won’t be able to benefit from your 2hrs of lessons.

If your group is surfing nearby and are planning to stay, your coach may be able to pick you up. If they are more than 5 mins drive away it will not be possible for the instructor to leave the group for safety reasons.

If you are on the surf coaching package, your board and wetsuit are included for all of your stay.

Yes, we offer private coaching, it needs to be pre-booked.

Surfboards (standard or premium) and wetsuits are not included in this package, as some guests like to bring their own so we have made it an optional extra.

Surf lessons are not included in the surf guiding package. If you would like lessons, please see our Surf Coaching package for more info (also, equipment hire is included in this package!).

Please see our levels section and also our spot guide on the Surf page.

We will always try to adapt to what you would like to do. If your group is surfing nearby your guide will come to pick you up. If they are more than 5 mins drive away it might be more difficult for the guide to leave the group for safety reasons. We will try to organize a car and driver in this situation, but it cannot always be guaranteed.

If the surf is bad or all of your group want to go on a local excursion your guide can take you to Agadir. Please note even if only one person in your group wants to surf our priority is to the surfers. In this case, we can arrange excursion but costs will apply. Please see the excursion section on the About page.

Please see the season guide and the surf forecast section on the Surf Page.

We only allow surfers who are level 4 to level 6 to book Surf Guiding, whether that’s for a day or a full holiday package. Surfers that are level 1, 2, or 3 can only book Surf Coaching. If any inquiries or bookings are made for Surf Guiding by level 1 or 2 surfers, our reservations team has the right to amend the booking.

Absolutely! If you wish to move up or down a group or level, simply inform your host the day before who, after confirming with your instructor/guide, will take the necessary action to get you into the appropriate group the next day.

We prefer to create a great group vibe by everyone doing a full week together. It disrupts the flow if people are coming and going at different times.

No! Our experienced & talented yoga teachers & surfing instructors are very capable of teaching all levels. Complete beginners are very welcome.  We instruct precisely & innovatively on all the basics & always offer advanced options so everyone may progress during their stay.

We draw together our years of study, diverse influences and myriad trainings to create inspired Vinyasa flow classes. On a Yoga Surf Retreat the mornings are dynamic flow, themed with aspects of the yoga philosophy, chakra system and/or anatomy and physiology.  The evenings are restorative, yin based meditative practices to unwind after a day in the surf.

Not at all, we encourage everyone to do as much or as little as they like, to create ‘their own’ perfect holiday.

Yes, absolutely! Our experienced and extensively trained teachers create classes for all levels. We set solid foundations at the start of the week for complete beginners and there are always plenty of options and modifications to enable beginners and seasoned practitioners to deepen and develop their practice. Inspiration for everyone is guaranteed!

Yes – and we love getting people out on the waves for their first time!

Taghazout/Aourir is spoilt with beautiful surf spots that are perfect for beginners, and we have our great surf instructors to help get you to ride the waves. We welcome surfers of all levels, and our experienced surf coach will be taking you out on the waves each day (if you wish) and choosing the best places for everyone to have their lessons and safely practice surfing…and have lots of fun.

Our fantastic Moroccan chefs, inspired by Moroccan and international cuisine, prepare exceptional gourmet vegetarian food all day every day (with 1 fish option mid-week if requested). Feedback continues to be faultless, with 6 stars on numerous occasions!

A typical day: A bountiful breakfast after morning yoga with fresh juices, eggs, fruits, and fresh bread followed by a delicious picnic lunch on the beach (homemade falafels, hearty salads, etc.), home-baked afternoon treats after surfing, and a gourmet evening feast after evening yoga (heaps of beautifully prepared and varied veggie dishes, beetroot patties, tagines, guilt-free chocolate hazelnut and avocado tart, etc.).

The food is exceptionally good!

Yoga clothes, beach clothes, beach towel, sun cream (as it’s more expensive here), something warm for the evenings & early mornings (almost any time of year, just in case, especially between December and March), an adaptor for 2 prong European plugs sockets, a good book for the beach, something to cover shoulders/legs for markets/towns ladies (not essential but easier to respect local culture). Mostly bring an open heart.

The beautiful yoga shala is fully equipped with yoga mats, yogi toes, blocks, straps, bolsters, blankets, lavender eye pillows, and even sandbags!

During the week, as part of the Yoga Surf Retreat, we offer a day off from surfing to explore the souk of Agadir and the Argan oil cooperative.

But also day trips to Essaouira (2.5 hours north), Taroudant (1.5 hours east), and Paradise Valley (25 minutes inland).

Yes, lots of guests on our Yoga Surf Retreats are solo travellers. We’ve created a truly friendly, relaxed vibe at Villa Mandala. It’s very welcoming and easy for solo travellers to feel completely at home straight away!

Not a problem at all. We always have at least 2 surf instructors on our Yoga Surf Retreats. So we can split the groups as necessary according to differing levels and we’ll always go to the best spot for your level. If you or your partner wanted to miss some morning yoga classes to join a more advanced group from our other venues, we can arrange this too.

So, it’s great for couples who are keen to socialize and meet other people. There are options to take time out alone too and the villa is spacious enough to find your own quiet corner to relax.

You can arrive at any time at Villa Mandala.

Your room will be ready by 4 pm. If you want to arrive before 4 pm – we’ll take care of your bags and you can enjoy the pool or rest in the indoor lounges, or go explore the surroundings.

Check-out is officially at 10 am, we will need you to free the room by then but can organize for you some activities if your departure is later, or you can also enjoy the communal area of the villa until your transfer arrives.

Please be aware that if you supply the wrong arrival or departure details and we send a transfer this will count as your complimentary transfer. Please note that free transfers are only available from Agadir airport (if staying with us for 7 or more days on a package). If you would like to be collected from a different location, including the Agadir bus station and hotels, please make sure you book this through the Customer Portal.

Under 3 participants, we reserve the right to upgrade you to our location in Taghazout on Surf Coaching and daily yoga classes.

On your departure day, we ask guests to vacate their rooms by 10 am.

This is so our staff can clean and change the rooms on time. We will host the group until midday. If your transfer is later than that, we have plenty of suggestions for you to fill the time beforehand.

Don’t worry, we will talk about this during the week!

We prefer to create a great group vibe by everyone doing a full week together.

All of your coaching and surfing will be with the girls on the all-girls week. The accommodation (not the bedrooms, with the exception of the dorm), yoga, and dining are mixed with other guests.

*under 3 participants, we reserve the right to integrate you into a mix-gender surf coaching group of the identical level

Morocco is a liberal Muslim country, and men and women are welcome to wear shorts and t-shirts.  Swimming costumes and bikinis are normal on the beach but it is advisable to cover up your arms and legs a bit when walking around town. Shorts, tees and flip flops are the norm. Trousers and jumpers are sometimes needed in the evenings all year round. In winter (Dec-Feb) evenings can be chilly so some warm clothes are a good idea during that period.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

What are the best surfing destinations in Morocco?

If you’re wondering what are the best spots for surfing in Morocco, you’re not alone.

Morocco receives thousands of surfers every winter looking for the best surf resorts in Morocco.

The Atlantic coastline of Morocco is fantastic for surfing and most beaches are easily accessed either by public transport or with your own vehicle.

what's the best place to surf in Morocco

If you’re planning to be in Morocco for a couple of weeks, the following list of Morocco surf spots will help you plan your trip.

I’ve listed them from the southernmost destination, Agadir, to the surf spots located farther north along the coast. I’ve also included Dakhla on the list of best surfing spots in Morocco.

The 17 most beautiful places to visit in Morocco

1. Surfing in Agadir

Agadir may not be the best Moroccan surf destination on this list but it’s an easily accessible and affordable destination. The city has an airport connecting it with all the other major Moroccan cities.

Surfing in Morocco - A Guide to the 9 Best Surfing Spots in the Country

If you’re short on time, this is the destination you should choose. There are plenty of beautiful beaches near the city that will appeal to beginner and experienced surfers.

What’s fantastic about Agadir is that after a day riding the waves, you can relax in a spa or enjoy the local nightlife.

2. Surfing in Tamraght and Aourir

10 minutes south of Taghazout is where you’ll find the small surfing towns of Tamraght and Aourir. These towns are perfect for new surfers that want to surf on smaller waves.

I would suggest that less experienced surfers try the waves in the area known as banana beach. It’s a long right hand point break that curves in the shape of the banana.

I’m not sure if the area was named because of the shape of the bay or because of the countless banana plantations that can be found nearby.

3. Surfing in and near Taghazout

Taghazout is one of the best surfing areas in Morocco if not in the whole world.

People come from all over to enjoy the near-perfect waves of this small Moroccan village.

Taghazout is super easy to reach from Agadir or Essaouira by public transport so it’s a destination you should absolutely include in your surfing trip. Taghazout is also considered one of the best destinations in the world to learn surfing.

where is Taghazout

A great thing about Taghazout is that the surf schools there are very affordable. Same goes for accommodation.

Cynthia and I stayed in Taghazout for almost a whole week and it barely cost anything.

Taghazout is a beautiful little hippie town with gorgeous cafes, stunning murals, and nice weather almost all year round.

Moroccan surf camp

There are so many beautiful surfing spots north and south of Taghazout that you could stay there for weeks and surf in a new area every day.

Taghazout is a great destination for surfers because it offers all kinds of surfing conditions, from soft beginner waves to heavy reef breaks for more advanced surfers.

Newbie surfers should check out spots called Banana point , Panoramas , Devil’s rock , and crocodile beach .

Most of these areas are closer to Tamraght. If you ask the locals or any surf instructor in Taghazout, they’ll point you in the right direction.

Intermediate surfers should head towards spots known as La source , Mysteries , Hash point , Douze k12 , k11 , and Anza Placa .

where should you kite surf in Morocco

And finally, the best spots for experienced surfers would be Anchor point , killer point , boilers , and slab .

The best time to surf in Taghazout is from late Fall to early Spring. Between the months of September and April, the swell of the waves is fantastic and the wind is ideal.

During the rest of the year the conditions are not as good anymore since a strong North-West wind blows most of the time.

what's the best time to surf in Taghazout

If you are looking for less crowded beaches and more affordable surf lessons it wouldn’t be a bad idea to come during the low season though.

If you’re willing to travel further North towards Essaouira , the two next Moroccan surfing hubs you should check out are Tamri and Imsouane.

Agadir paradise valley

4. Surfing in Tamri

Tamri is a very good location for intermediate surfers. It’s located between Taghazoute and Imsouane.

What’s so great about Tamri is the fact that it’s really not touristic. It’s probably the quietest of all the surfing spots on the Atlantic coast of Morocco.

It’s also an area that attracts a lot of local and exotic birds.

most popular surfing spots in Morocco

If you go there at the right time of the year you might see some flamingos and you’ll get the chance to do some excellent bird watching.

5. Surfing in Imsouane

Imsouane is a beautiful Moroccan town located right between Essaouira and Taghazout. Imsouane is the favorite destination in Morocco for many surfers.

They visit the town for its breathtaking scenes, for its calmness and tranquility and for its perfect surfing conditions.

Imsouane has one of the longest breaks in the world.

Imsouane is a relatively remote location and there aren’t many transport options available to reach it. You can rent a car and drive along the beautiful coastline to get there, catch a taxi (about 800-1200 MAD from Agadir or Essaouira), or ride the Souk to Surf shuttle bus .

The Souk to shuttle bus runs to Imsouane from Taghazout, Tamraght, Essaouira , and Agadir on a daily basis. It costs around 80 MAD per person.

how to surf in Morocco

The two main surfing spots in Imsouane are La Cathedrale , a beach break spot and La Bay , a point break spot.

Imsouane has smooth long waves that rarely get messy or big. The wave peels over soft sand for 300 meters making this an ideal surf spot for beginners and intermediate surfers.

6. Surfing in Sidi Kaouki

Sidi Kaouki is another coastal village where you can, not only surf but also observe stunning birds. The area surrounding the village and the small river that runs next to it are spots often visited by flocks of flamingos.

Sidi Kaouki is much less touristic than the city of Essaouira located 30 km north. Because of this, renting surfboards in Sidi Kaouki is much cheaper.

You can rent surfboards in Sidi Kaouki for 100 MAD per day which comes down to about 10 USD a day.

This small village is a good destination for horseback riding and camel riding as well.

This article breaks down the costs of getting from Essaouira to Sidi Kaouki by bus or taxi.

7. Surfing in Essaouira

Essaouira is our favorite city in Morocco and it’s superb surfing, windsurfing, and kite-surfing destination. It’s a windy coastal city and this makes it a top destination for surfers and kite surfers.

The swell of the waves is much stronger in winter so you’ll see more surfers there at that time of the year.

Essaouira is easily reached from Marrakech , Casablanca , and Rabat by public transport.

wave along the Moroccan coast

You’ll see plenty of surf shops and surfing schools, as well as windsurfing schools in Essaouira . If you always wanted to learn water sports, wait no longer and book your flight to this beautiful seaside city now!

The best spot for surfing in Essaouira is at the far end of the main beach where camels and horses are gathered.

Essouira itself is also a very lovely place to hang out and meet other travelers. The city has a very special charm.

Best cities to visit in Morocco - Essaouira port - Journal of Nomads

There’s a young crowd of surfers and backpackers that gravitate there throughout the year, the city has peculiar Portuguese architecture and its streets are filled with the beautiful handicraft of local artisans.

8. Surfing in Safi

If you drive two hours north of Essaouira or two hours and a half south of Casablanca , you’ll arrive in the little town of Safi. Safi has amazing waves that can rise to 5 meters high and break for up to 500 meters.

Pros come from all over the world to ride the big hollow barrels these waves generate.

Safi has gained a very good reputation in the surfing community over the years and is now a world-famous surfing destination for expert wave riders.

Surfing in Morocco - A Guide to the 9 Best Surfing Spots in the Country

I wouldn’t recommend beginner surfers to choose Safi for a Moroccan surfing holiday.

The current is very strong, the waves are tricky, and there are protruding rocks making this a destination much more suited for very experienced surfers.

9. Surfing in Dakhla

Dakhla is located south of Agadir in an area known as Western Sahara. This is an area where the legal status of the territory and the issue of its sovereignty remains unresolved even today.

Although Dakhla is located in Western Sahara, it’s totally possible to visit the town and even surf there. It’s very affordable to get a flight from Casablanca or Agadir to Dakhla.

Dakhla is also very popular among the kite-surfing community.

Dakhla is frequented by surfers for the quality of its waves and gorgeous landscapes. The peninsula of Dakhla is an exceptional surf destination with its long sandy desert beaches.

What is the best season to surf in Morocco?

The very best time to surf in Morocco is between December and March. That’s when the waves are at their highest and the wind is perfect.

This is the season that attracts more experienced surfers, especially Europeans.

But surfing season in Morocco already starts in September and continues until April.

September and October are two great months to surf along the whole Moroccan coast since the first winter swells arrive, there is usually no wind and a lot fewer tourists.

Top Things to do in Rabat – A Complete Guide to Morocco’s Capital City

How high are the waves on the Moroccan coast in winter?

Morocco is probably not as popular as Australia’s Gold Coast, or Hawaii’s Waimea Bay when it comes to surfing but the waves in this North-African country can get pretty high in winter.

When the wind is good in Taghazout during winter, the waves can swell to 4 or 5 meters (13 to 16 feet) and are usually at least 300 meters long.

Is surfing in Morocco safe?

Morocco as a whole is a very safe country. After traveling in this country for more than a year I can guarantee that Morocco is very safe to travel to!

Last year alone more than 10 million people visited Morocco, making it one of the most visited countries in Africa. With such a high amount of visits, the amount of crime in Morocco is still extremely low.

Surfing in Morocco is not more dangerous than surfing anywhere else in the world but there are general safety rules you’ll have to follow.

You should always surf with a partner that is more experienced than you and that can help you out if you get in trouble.

It’s also better to surf in areas that correspond to your skill level. Always ask the locals about the wind, tides and swell conditions before going out with your surfboard at sea.

is surfing in Morocco safe?

Do you need a wet suit to surf in Morocco?

The water temperature on the Atlantic coast of Morocco stays chilly throughout the year so you’ll definitely need a wet suit to surf there.

On the southern coast of the country, between Essaouira and Agadir, the temperature drops between 16 and 18 °C (61-64°F) in winter. Although the water is colder during that period, the surf season is at its best.

You can bring your own wet suit from home but it’s also possible to rent wet suits in any surf school or surf shop in the different coastal towns.

I would suggest grabbing a 4/3mm wet suit if you go there in winter.

In summer, you won’t need to wear a wet suit that is as thick. A 2 mm shorty should do the trick. If the wind is up or you go surfing early in the morning, you might need a 3/2mm wet suit.

wearing a wet suit in Morocco

What should you bring on a surf trip to Morocco?

There are a few essentials you shouldn’t forget on your next surfing adventure in Morocco. Here are the things we recommend bringing along:

Although the weather and the water can be chilly during winter, you shouldn’t let that deceive you. The sun can be absolutely vicious and you could end up with a bad sunburn.

The best sunscreen you can bring to surf in Morocco is a sunscreen with Zinc Oxide . It’s a powdered solution that is insoluble in water. It doesn’t come off in the ocean and will stay on your skin until you wash it off it the sower.

  • Headlamp or torchlight

The sun sets very early in Morocco during winter. In Taghazout, you’re likely to meet fellow surfers and spend the evening with them.

Bring a headlamp so you can find your way back to your accommodation after dinner or partying.

In Morocco, you’ll be exposed to completely new food, water, and bacteria. If you want to fully enjoy your surfing holiday and not have to run to the bathroom, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring some probiotics in tablets or powder.

  • Water Filter Bottle

Another recommendation I would have would be to avoid drinking tap water on the coast of Morocco without filtering it. While tap water in Morocco is generally considered safe, exposure to completely new bacteria could make you sick.

To avoid buying plastic water bottles, I would recommend bringing a LifeStraw Water Filter Bottle .

This is a bottle that filters water using a filtration device. If you drink water using this bottle , any dirt, bacteria or parasites get trapped in the filter, while the clean water passes through.

Surfing in Morocco - A Guide to the 9 Best Surfing Spots in the Country

  • First Aid kit

I sincerely hope you don’t have to use a first aid kit but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Surfing in Morocco like anywhere else in the world comes with certain dangers.

If you are an experienced surfer always going after the biggest waves, it’s not a bad idea to have at least a small First Aid kit with you.

It should include antiseptic liquid, cotton, bandages, heat and cold spray, and a small pair of scissors. Emergency Services can sometimes be hard to locate in remote surfing areas. This is the emergency kit we recommend .

  • Warm clothes

You’re probably wondering why you would need warm clothes in Morocco. The sea breeze that hits the coast in the evening can cool down the temperature very quickly.

Even if the day is warm and sunny, the evening could always be much colder than expected. We recommend bringing a warm sweater and some track pants to stay warm. It’s also helpful to have a beanie hat .

After a whole day of surfing, it’s also easy to catch a little cold. So make sure to stay warm.

It may sound crazy but it will be way cheaper to bring your own surf wax from home or buy it online before your trip.

what to bring on a surfing trip

Where can you learn how to surf in Morocco?

Morocco is gaining international fame as a world-renowned surfing destination. Because of this, many young Moroccans are opening surf schools in the different surfing towns along the coast.

There are so many different surf schools and surf camps in Morocco that it can sometimes be hard to know which one to choose.

Here are the different surfing schools we recommend in a few of the towns along the Moroccan coast:

Surf schools in Agadir

Whether you are looking for a surf adventure, a yoga retreat, trekking in the mountains or just pure relaxation, you will find it all at Crocro Surf Maroc camp , your personal surf, trekking and yoga instructor in Morocco.

The Camp is located just 16 km from the city of Agadir and 45 minutes from the international airport of Agadir Al Massira.

This area not only has a perfect climate (more than 300 sunny days a year) but also amazing spots for surfers of all levels. Their friendly and qualified surf instructors will teach you to surf on your own not just follow commands like paddle and stand up.

You will know when to do everything by yourself, you will feel the wave and make it the ocean your ally.

Surf schools in Taghazout

Taghazout is a village where the waves are perfect for surfers of all levels. There are many surf schools based directly in town.

SurfCamp Taghazout

This surf school has been been in Taghazout for well over a decade now. Most of the surf instructors at the camp are ISA (International Surfing Association) certified, can speak many languages and are from all over the world!

They offer surfing classes as well as yoga retreats in beautiful surroundings.

SurfCamp Taghazout also provides accommodation as part of their surfing packages. The school owners also have a lovely hostel that offers a 180-degree panoramic view from its rooftop terrace of Taghazout Bay.

They offer surf packages that will be ideal for most people, but also accommodation-only options for others. You can contact them here and create your own personalized surf trip.

surf school in Tachazout

Hash Point surf camp

Hash Point surf camp is another great surfing school I highly recommend in Taghazout.

With this school you’ll learn how to surf in Morocco’s safe beach breaks or improve your surf level on one of the many right-handers of Taghazout. Their qualified teachers will guide and teach you every step of the way. They offer surf school packages for all levels.

The lessons include 2,5 hours of lessons in the morning and 2 hours of practice time in the afternoon, under the supervision of great teachers. Each surf instructor teaches a group of max 8 students.

Once a week, they organize a surf talk on the terrace of their hostel where they catch up with you on your progress and your surf knowledge.

Surf Berber

This awesome school commits to providing you with three things: surf, yoga and having a great time! The school was launched by two friends who visited Taghazout and fell in love with the small town.

Their surf camp caters for up to twenty-five people (although they can stretch for larger groups).

What differentiates them from other surf schools in Taghazout is the fact that they don’t just use one beach. They drive to the beach that is going to be perfect for you on that day (unlike most other surf schools that will just use the same stretch of beach day in, day out).

This means that you get to catch as many green waves as you can!

Surfing in Morocco - A Guide to the 9 Best Surfing Spots in the Country

Surf schools in Essaouira

Loving surf

This school based in Essaouira offers surfing as well as kite-surfing lessons. They have a great crew of super experienced instructors who speak almost all the languages you could imagine.

The school offers many different packages for a fully customized trip.

This is probably the surfing school in Morocco that left the biggest impression on us and we highly recommend it! It’s owned and operated by Moroccan twins Mouhssin and Yassin Kharbouch.

They bring passion and love for the sport to their school . They have both been surfing since they were kids. Born and raised in Essaouira , they know all the surf spots and have been working as surf coaches for several years.

The twins offer surf lessons and trips in Essaouira to suit your needs. Whether you’re a beginner or looking for some extra tips, you can join their surf lifestyle and feel at home with them. They also offer surf trips to other local surf spots around Essaouira.

3 thoughts on “Surfing in Morocco – A Guide to the 9 Best Surfing Spots in the Country”

The waves here in summer are smaller than in winter but are still good for learning. For beginners, the surf is good all year round.

I would like to do a surf trip at the end of August / September.

Do you think it’s possible even thought is not the Surfing season there ?

Let me know your thoughts please 😊

Hi Marta, I honestly can’t tell. A lot will depend on the waves because no waves = no surf 🙁

About Surfing in Morocco

Most surfers who surf in Morocco for the first time fall in love with it immediately. This country, the “land of right-hand point breaks”, is definitely one of the best surf destinations in the world. In fact, with only a short flight from most European countries, surfers from all over the world discovered the magic of Morocco, and keep coming here regularly to surf its epic waves.

Morocco, a Muslim country in West Africa, faces the Sahara desert from the East and the Atlantic Ocean from the West. Due to its geographical location, there are almost 365 sunny days a year. With about 1,800 KM of coastline, Morocco gets tons of swell and offers several world-class surf breaks. While perfect waves hit the whole Moroccan coastline, most surfers hang out in the country’s major surf capital, Taghazout .

Located less than half an hour from the International Airport of Agadir, the area of Taghazout is home to a wide variety of surf spots. From soft pilling and beginner waves to massive barrels, the waves here can suit all skill levels. For that reason, surfing in Morocco has become so popular in the past decade and established the country as a perfect destination for a surf trip.

Surfing in Morocco

The Best Surf Spots in Morocco

When surfing in Morocco, you have a huge selection of breaks to choose from. In fact, Morocco offers all types of waves for all skill levels. Therefore, any surfer can find the right waves for himself, depending on his skill level. So, in detail, these are the best surf spots in Morocco:

Surf Spots in Morocco for Beginners:

Banana point:.

You will find this spot in front of the many banana plantation fields in the area. It is a tremendous right-hand point break with a soft, sandy bottom. The waves in this spot are long and mellow and, therefore, great for beginners and for longboards.

Devil’s Rock:

Devil’s Rock is not as scary as it may sound. Actually, it is a pretty soft beach break that opens up to both the right and left sides. Due to its proximity to the nearby village, it can get crowded. However, this beach has several different peaks, so you can always find a spot for yourself.

Another right-hander breaking over a sandy bottom. During high tide, this wave is gentle and beginner-friendly. However, when the tide is low or when the swell is big, this beach turns into a fast barrel machine.

Crocodile’s / Crocs:

This is a typical beach break. It has multiple peaks breaking over the sand and open to both sides. It is a perfect beach to practice your skills without danger.

Located further north, this is a very long right-hand point break. It opens up softly and slowly along a beautiful bay. This is the favorite surf spot in Morocco for beginners and longboarders.

Morocco Surf Spots Map

Surf Spots in Morocco for Intermediates:

La Source is a wonderful reef break. Actually, it is an A-frame wave breaking over a rocky bottom, but it also has some sandy sections. On a good day, you can ride it for about 100-150 meters, and it is suitable for all skill levels.

This one is definitely a world-class surf spot in Morocco. It breaks over a reef and can run up to 250 meters with some barreling sections and a fun wall. Up to 5 feet, it is a fantastic wave to ride, but above that, it starts to close out.

Hash Point:

This right-hand point break is located right in front of Taghazout. Due to its location, it is always crowded with both locals and foreigners who come to explore the surf beaches of Morocco. The waves here are fast, long, and suitable to all levels.

K-11 and K-12:

These spots got their name for their distance from Agadir. While K-11 is one of the only left breaks in the area, K-12 is an A-frame that opens up to both sides. Both spots offer a pretty easy ride and are perfect for goofy footers.

Desert Point:

This point break produces amazingly long right-hand waves. However, it requires a big swell to perform well. Therefore, wait for the right day to score it, and you will not regret coming here.

You will need to head further north to reach this spot. However, on the flat days, when no other spot is working, Tamri always produces some surfable waves. This beach break works on any day, any tide, and any swell direction.

Surf Spots in Morocco for Advanced Surfers:

Anchor point:.

This is the most famous surf spot in Morocco and the main reason why people come from all over the world to surf in Morocco. This right-hand point break in Taghazout is a world-class wave. In fact, it has 3 different sections with a fast wall and massive barrels. This spot is definitely a place you must visit during your surf trip to Morocco.

Killer Point:

This one is probably the most consistent spot in the area. Therefore, you can count on it on the days when the swell is small. Even though it requires a long paddle to get to the lineup, it also produces incredibly long rides to the right and good barrels.

This break is always bigger than the other spots and requires high skills to surf. It is long and powerful, but only a fast surfer can make all the sections. If you know what you are doing, don’t miss out on this spot, but if you are a beginner, this one is not for you.

Similarly to Boilers, this is also a spot for advanced surfers only. With big sharp rocks, strong currents, and long massive barrels, this is a perfect wave for those who can handle it.

If you are new to surfing and looking for beginner waves, check out our post about beginner surf beaches in Morocco .

Surf Seasons in Morocco

In general, you can surf in Morocco 365 days a year. Since this coastline picks up both NW and SW swells, you can always find something to ride on somewhere along the coast. However, the best surf season in Morocco is the winter, between October and March. During these months, the swell is big and highly consistent. Moreover, the offshore winds blow from the desert and contribute to the perfect surf conditions.

The air temperaure during the season typically averages 22°C. The days are always sunny, but the nights can get pretty cold, so bring some long sleeves for the evenings. Accordingly, the water temperature is usually around 18°C. Therefore, when surfing in Morocco, you must bring your full wet suit. A 3/2 one will usually be enough, but for the sensitive ones, better bring a 4/3.

Keep in mind that during the peak of the season (December and January), the swell can be huge, sometimes even 10-15 feet. If you are an advanced surfer, these months will be perfect for you. However, if you are still not at this level, you better come to explore the surf beaches of Morocco at the beginning or end of the season, when the waves are around 4-7 feet and a bit more forgiving.

How to Plan your Surf Trip to Morocco

To make the most of your surf adventure in Morocco, careful planning is essential. From choosing the right time to visit to understanding the local surf conditions and culture, there are several key factors to consider. By avoiding common mistakes and following a well-thought-out plan, you can ensure a memorable and enjoyable surf trip to Morocco. So, if you’re ready to ride the waves in this North African paradise, read on for essential tips and advice on planning your surf trip to Morocco.

The first step when starting to organize a surf trip to Morocco is to choose a region to surf.  After you have decided on which region you want to go to, you still have to figure out the specific breaks for this getaway, and finally, your accommodation (which is, of course, Banana Village in Tamraght, Morocco).

Although this might seem simple and it’s been on your bucket list for ages, you should know there is a lot involved in planning a trip to a Northern African country. But please, don’t be worried, as we will explain here all the steps to make your surf holiday as hassle-free as possible!

Before getting busy on the Medina and glaring at the bright colourful goods and spices in the Souks, there are a number of things you should be aware of so you don’t end up hiking in the desert with your least comfortable shoes on! So sit down comfortably and let us help you out in turning this surf holiday more relaxed for you and your friends (or partner in crime).

Citizens of the countries below who are travelling to Morocco for tourism and plan to stay less than 90 days, do not require a VISA:

Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bulgaria, Brazil, Chile, Congo (Rep), Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Guinea (Conakry), Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Korea (Rep), Kuwait, Libya, Liechtenstein, Mali, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Niger, Norway, Oman, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Romania, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Singapore, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. To these countries, you can add all European Union nationals.

Entry visas are only valid for three months; visitors that wish to stay longer should apply at the local police station within fifteen days of arrival. For other visa enquiries, you should contact the Embassy of your country in Morocco.

Citizens from all other countries not mentioned here require an official visa from a Moroccan embassy. If you are not sure what is needed to get into Morocco from your homeland, check your country’s Moroccan embassy website to see the requirements.

From most countries, the only thing you need to have is a valid passport (we strongly recommend that the validation of the passport exceeds 6 months at the time of your trip). If your passport has an expiration date due in 6 months, the airline might refuse your entrance on the plane, so please make sure you have the passport valid for over 6 months!

At the moment there are no COVID-related travel restrictions. However, we strongly recommend that you check on these rules with the current information displayed on the Moroccan National Tourism Office official website.

Book your Plane Tickets for your Surf Trip to Morocco

There are other airports you can fly to and then hop on a short plane ride to Agadir. These airports are: Marrakech (RAK), Rabat (RBA), Casablanca (CMN), and Fes (FEZ).

You can use your regular flight search engine (Skyscanner, kayak, etc.) in order for you to find the most adequate flight to your needs. Please notice that if you are coming from the USA or Asia, you will pay substantially more as if you are travelling from Europe, as dis distance is shorter.

Prepare to Surf and Explore Morocco

Our surf camp offers the most enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere of a private villa while also providing all types of surf-related activities to all our guests, considering their needs and expectations. Thanks to our central and beachfront location, you can enjoy all amenities and services and go out for a shopping day nearby, and also still have the peacefulness you are searching for on this vacation!

  • Free Airport pick-up (if you book a min. 7-night stay)

Rapturecamps Surf trip to Morocco

We recommend a minimum of a 7-night stay in order to get immersed in the full surfing experience. However, if you have a little bit more time, take another 3 days (or more) to check out more interesting places in the country – you can follow our article with 10 things to do in Morocco or just try and get a multi-day tour with a certified guide that will take you around the country.

If you want a simple plan you can spend a couple of days visiting Marrakesh, and be amazed at the views and tourist landmarks you can discover. Consider adding a night in the desert, or a visit to Fez (where you can find my personal favourite Souk). Chefchaeouen (the well-known blue village) is also a place worth stopping by if you have the chance!

Although Morocco is a safe place to visit, we highly suggest booking all your external day trips and activities in advance, to make sure the company you choose has a reputation and follows all regulations and procedures. When considering these trips on-site, you need to be careful in dealing with the vendors in the souks and markets who will sometimes try to persuade the customers to get cheaper items or trips for a bigger price. So make sure you make your research in terms of the pricing and conditions of what’s practised in Morocco.

Health and Immunizations for your Surf Trip to Morocco

You are recommended to have the basic vaccinations in your system so you can enter Morocco and have no risk in getting these diseases: measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), tetanus, chickenpox, polio, Hepatitis A and typhoid. These last two you need to be very careful as you can get them from food or water. The tap water in Morocco is not advisable to drink if you are not a local.

If you want to be 100% safe you can also get Hepatitis B vaccine and Rabies. You will find a lot of animals throughout Morocco, so if you get bitten or scratched by one, try and go immediately to the nearest health centre or hospital so they can access the risk of your injury.

We also advise you to carry a Travel Medical Kit, which you can build according to your needs. Check the CDC website for tips and kits.

Another very important thing is to make sure you have good travel insurance that can cover for any loss, injury or disease during your surf trip to Morocco!

The main language spoken in this country is Arabic. You will also find little villages where old dialects are still used to this day. The second language of this country is French, and if you are going to the souks, stores or any hotel/restaurant, all the staff should have an excellent knowledge of the french language. English is widely spoken as well, but if you are planning to go and visit remote villages, it’s a good idea to have an idea of how to communicate basic words and phrases.

Guest Reviews for Rapture Surfcamps

The best time to visit Morocco is during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) when temperatures are moderate. However, each season has its unique charm, so consider your preferred activities and climate.

Visitors from many countries, including the United States, Canada, and European Union countries, can enter Morocco visa-free for stays up to 90 days. Check the specific visa requirements based on your nationality before traveling.

Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca, Chefchaouen, and Essaouira are popular cities to explore. Each offers a unique blend of history, culture, and vibrant experiences.

The currency in Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, but it’s advisable to carry some cash, especially in more rural regions. ATMs are readily available in cities.

Morocco is generally safe for tourists. However, it’s essential to take standard precautions, such as being aware of your surroundings, securing valuables, and respecting local customs.

The Ultimate Guide to Agadir Surf

The Agadir surf is okay, but the city is also the gateway to the legendary spots of Taghazout further north up the Moroccan shoreline. That’s where most will go, for some of the best surf camps in the country. Winter is the time to come. Waves are for all levels.

An introduction to Agadir surf

Agadir surf

We’re just going to go right ahead and say it: The Agadir surf ain’t anything special. Yes, there’s an okay-ish beach break right by the town, along with a few right points off the nearby harbor walls. Sadly, they’re not very good quality, suffer from serious industrial pollution, and often require really strong NW swells to offer anything worthwhile. Agadir itself is mainly a tourist resort with that ubiquitous kasbah and plenty of hotel resorts – the vibe ain’t one of a surfer’s city .

But there’s an ace up the sleeve in Agadir. It goes by the name of Taghazout . You’ve probably heard of it; it’s Morocco’s bona fide surf mecca, after all. A quick 30-minute drive to north of the city will get you there. Then, you can hit some seriously awesome surf breaks, like the almost-always-offshore Boilers and the steaming rights of Killer Point.

There have been issues with water quality, but things are improving year on year. The decision you’ll have to make it whether to stay in Agadir for the lux hotels and do some surfing on daytrips, or to commit to Taghazout itself, where the trip will be much more about chasing waves.

We might use affiliate links in this post. Basically, you click em’ and we get a little something from your booking or purchase. They help us keep offering more and more in-depth surf guides to awesome places all around the globe. So, thanks for that!

This guide is just one part of our complete guide to surfing in Morocco

Agadir surf at a glance

The good…

  • Taghazout has some very high-quality breaks
  • Right points that shine in winter
  • The winter surfing is ace!

The bad…

  • Water quality
  • Quite busy these days
  • Bad infrastructure

What’s in this guide to Agadir surf?

Where is agadir.

Agadir is the last major port town on the Moroccan coast before the wild deserts take over the land moves southwards to the contested territory of the Western Sahara. The far end of the Atlas Mountains crashes down from the highlands of Morocco to meet the Atlantic Ocena here. They provide a pretty nice backdrop. However, surfers will undoubtedly be looking north, which is where the finest waves in the country await, along by Taghazout and Imsouane. They’re less than half an hour’s drive away!

A guide to the Agadir surf spots

Waves in Agadir

Agadir surf ranges northwards from the city itself. We’ll start in the town and move towards Taghazout so you can see what’s in the offing up the whole length of the coastline. There are also a few lesser-known, less-busy spots to the south of town that might be worth having on the radar…

Cherry Beach is the name of he and that fronts Inezgane, a sort of suburban extension of Agadir to the south but technically its own town. There are sometimes competitions on the wave, but the break is usually an all-level party. The waves rarely go above head height and they’re tempered into nice, rideable sets by the patchwork of reefs underfoot. It’s a regular spot for beginners who want to plan surf trips without leaving Agadir, or not wanting to deal with the ever-growing lineups in Taghazout.

Agadir beach

The big plage to the south of Agadir is a little bit of a undeserving mention here. You need a lot of swell to push up this far into the bay and even when it arrives there’s really no moxie left. The best days are chest-high sets which love to crumble. Okay for beginners but don’t rely on this one. There’s far better Agadir surf to be had northwards.

Anza is the first real quality break you’ll encounter north of Agadir. It’s not far from the city at all, and only 10 minutes drive from Taghazout – expect some spillover from the surf camps there. It’s a mix of beach and reef break that picks up lots of westerly swell and works quite often, even in the summer months. out back, intermediates can enjoy a fast right that lips over the rocks and falls away into a mellow ride that’s got space for a few switchbacks. The beachfront also has a break, which is peaky and perfect for total beginners. Pollution is the problem – Anza has some pretty poor water quality thanks to the nearby port.

KM12 is a long and empty stretch of beach that has multiple peaks. They only really work on the push or at full high, so time your trip right. The reward is a mix of lefts and rights that will be pushy and cushiony most days. Winter months can offer heavier swells that make A-frames and steeper waves but it’s a beginner and intermediate spot at heart. Early sessions are better because the offshores can be annoying.

Tamraght has established itself as a decent alternative to Taghazout for those a little peeved by the over development of the latter. We have to say, we like that it’s dodged the pretentiousness that inevitably comes with the arrival of all those surf-yoga camps. It’s still a pretty chilled Moroccan village filled with fishermen and tagine cooks. The breaks are much better for beginner surfers here than further north. Places like Cro Cro and Banana Beach are the stomping ground of most Agadir surf camps, so expect this one to be on the menu if you do an organized surf tour from the city.

We won’t go into all the awesome breaks up in Taghazout here. There’s just not enough room. Thankfully, we’ve got a dedicated guide to the town. Suffice to say it’s the surf mecca of Morocco, and the leading surf destination on the continent outside of South Africa. The breaks are varied, offering mushy plage rollers for beginners and some super nice right-handers off the points for intermediates who like to rip walls of 10-foot and more.

Where to stay when surfing in Agadir

One of the great things about Agadir is just how many hotels there are. This city was a beach resort long before it was the gateway to one of the most celebrated stretch of learner surf beaches in North Africa, you know? Today, there’s also a great showing of places that are 100% focussed on surf….

Blue Waves Surf House ($$)

Best for: A stylish stay with great surf tuition as optional

Blue Waves Surf House oozes a vintage Berber charm. It’s perched on the headland just north of the city. That means you can surf on the beach of Anza whenever you like, and it’s easy to escape to Banana Beach or Tamraght to boot. That’s if you can pull yourself away from the breezy terrace and it’s Moroccan cushions, and the lovely interiors – all whitewashed and dotted with earthy artworks. There’s also an on-site surf shop and the breakfasts are exactly what you need for gearing up for a day on the waves. Love it!

Pearl Surf Camp Morocco ($-$$)

Best for: Budget surf trips to Agadir

Pearl Surf Camp Morocco   is a highly rated hostel-style stay that’s located really close to Cro Cro break (a beginner fav) near Tamraght. It’s done out like a Moroccan kasbah, with terracotta colors and a rooftop garden overlooking the Atlas foothills. More than anything it’s about the vibe. You’ll surf with and meet all sorts of other people!

The Surf Hotel Tamraght ($$)

Best for: Couples that want to learn to surf together

The Surf Hotel Tamraght is a charming establishment tucked into the heart of an authentic Moroccan village. It’s close to some of the area’s very best beginner breaks, so you can come here if you’re looking to learn. There’s a touch of luxury about it, which comes through in the hotel-style rooms and the gorgeous rooftop terrace overlooking the Atlantic.

Surf camps in Agadir

Surf camp in Agadir

If you’d prefer not to have to book your lessons and surf rental when you arrive in Agadir, the best thing to do is to plump for a surf camp. The chances are they will be on the beaches of Tamraght or Taghazout to the north of the city, which is where most of the surfing happens anyway. Let’s take a look at some that we think are worth a special mention:

  • 8 Day Surf and Yoga Holiday at Surf Coast Morocco – Surf Coast Morocco is a bit of a Taghazout legend. Okay, so you won’t be staying in Agadir proper, but the waves are literally two steps from your door. You’ll do between 2-3 hours of surf per day and get daily yoga seshes with qualified teachers. The food is cracking. Accommodation is lovely. What more do you need?
  • Easy Surf Maroc 6-Day Package for All Levels – This package also takes you up to Taghazout. The pad has fantastic views of the sea and a lovely yoga space. It’s a bit better for more advanced surfers overall.

Step-by-step guide to planning your Agadir surf trip right now

Step one: Book flights to the Agadir surf…Lately, we like Omio for searching flights. It’s a nice interface and has lots of airline options. We also use Skyscanner because that sometimes offers deals that even beat going direct to the carrier!

Step two: Book your surf camp Book Surf Camps is the numero uno online booking platform for fully-fledged surf-stay packages on the internet right now. Then there’s Booking.com . That has consistently unbeatable rates for hotels and a nifty map feature that lets you check EXACTLY how close your hotel is to a surf break.

Step three: Get insurance This is kinda’ important. Not just for surf trips but for any trips. SafetyWing is great for nomad travelers. They offer rolling contracts that cover amateur surfing.

Step four (optional): Rent a car If you’re surf camping then you might not need wheels. If you’re not then we’ll just say this: We’ve never been on a surf trip that wasn’t improved by having our own car. Use RentalCars – they’re the best.

Step five: Enjoy!

For paying for stuff when you’re traveling – Get a Wise borderless card/account . They charge NOTHING for POS payments in any country and have some of the best FX rates around in our humble opinion.

When to surf in Agadir

Clean lines in Agadir

The best time to surf in Agadir, and this goes for pretty much the whole of the western Moroccan coast, is in the wintertime. When November sets in, you’re looking at regular W-SW swells with offshore winds for much of the day. Periods also increase, so there’s lovely power in the points up by Taghazout. Summer suffers from really bad onshores and cross-shores, but it’s okay for beginners on the hunt for some crumbly whitewash.

Summer (May-August)

The summer months on the Moroccan Atlantic aren’t ideal for surfing. The problem isn’t really the swell – the west channels on the Atlantic always work and nearby Canaries are getting good conditions. It’s mainly the wind, which blows the hell outta’ the breaks on this exposed stretch. Essouaria , which isn’t too far away, magnetizes kite surfers, for examples. When it comes to the Agadir surf, it’s best for beginners from May-August.

Wear: A thin 2mm wetty will do the trick

Winter (November-April)

Consistent west swells dovetail with the offshore easterly winds from the Sahara to cook up a perfect surf storm on the Agadir coast. This is it, folks – the prime time to head to places like Taghazout and Tamraght. On the whole, we’d say it’s fantastic for all intermediates and up, but there’s also lots for beginners if you know what break to choose (see above).

Wear: A 3/2 for longer sessions. Bring a surf hat if you’re staying out for a while too!

Surf shops in Agadir

Agadir has a nice clutch of surf shops, mainly catering to the influx o travelers who come here as a steppingstone to the breaks of the Moroccan Atlantic. There are also more shops further up the coast in Taghazout if you forget to buy what you need. We can recommend…

Rip Curl Surf Shop

Rip Curl Surf Shop sits conveniently in the central business area of Agadir. It stocks SUP boards, paddle boards, foamies and shorties, along with plenty of boardshorts and surf swim wear. Also lots in the way of accessories – from action cams to wax and leashes and whatnot. It’s a good pitstop on your way to the breaks up north.

Rod Surf Shop

Want a new custom for your surf trip in Morocco? Support a local shaper by hitting up Rod Surf Shop . It’s a cool little cabin where the namesake owner forges some spectacular boards. Made to order and a lovely logo design with dip colors possible.

Surfing in Morocco: Welcome to the Kingdom of Waves

Surfing in Morocco

Morocco has always been present in my surfing life. Not because it’s a place I’m always visiting (I wish!), but because of its proximity to Europe and Portugal, in particular.

Some say that surf entered Portugal by the hand of Europeans who passed here while heading down to Africa and would stop and show local Portuguese kids the art of riding waves.

Seeing the long waves extending throughout the coastline in surf magazines and pictures, I realized Morocco is a surfer’s paradise.

The intoxicating blend of vibrant culture, warm hospitality, and some of the finest African coast breaks always encouraged me to explore its surf-rich shores.

So, if you’re like me, strap your board to the roof of your trusty van and set off on a journey to unravel the secrets of Moroccan surfing.

Surfing in Morocco: Meet some of the surf spots

The Kingdom of Morocco offers a dazzling array of surf spots to satisfy all types of wave riders. Among the standout gems are:

This charming coastal village is the epicenter of Morocco’s surf scene. Its relaxed atmosphere and vibrant surf culture are infectious. Beginners can test the waters at Banana Beach or Panoramas, while seasoned surfers can tackle the notorious Anchor Point, one of the best right-hand point breaks in the world.

A short drive north of Taghazout, Tamri Beach is perfect for beginners and longboard enthusiasts. The waves are gentle, and the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains adds to its allure. Is the place to go when Taghazout is small.

Known for its endless point break, Imsouane is a surfer’s paradise. This sleepy fishing village offers an authentic Moroccan experience. You can score long rides at Cathedral Point or The Bay while enjoying the local hospitality.

This UNESCO World Heritage-listed town is a cultural delight. While the waves might not be as colossal as some other spots, Essaouira offers a unique surf vibe, a colorful medina, and a mix of reef and beach breaks.

Sidi Kaouki

A wild, undeveloped stretch of coast, Sidi Kaouki is a surreal escape for adventurous surfers. It’s a great place for solitary sessions, and you can ride waves that seem to go on forever.

The Surf Vibe in Morocco

Surfing in Morocco is not only about the waves. Nowadays, it’s an amalgamation of local tradition and international surf culture.

Moroccans usually are gracious and welcoming, and you often find yourself sharing a tagine with new friends in beachfront cafes or joining conversational circles on the sand.

There’s a sense of community here. Surfers from around the world come together, sharing their love for the sport and embracing Morocco’s ‘no worries’ spirit.

With surf shops, yoga classes, and vibrant nightlife, Taghazout is the ultimate surf hub. Evenings are often spent sipping mint tea while discussing the day’s epic rides or exploring the local souks for treasures.

Don’t forget your travel insurance if you go surfing in Morocco

Beyond the morocco surf.

While riding waves is undoubtedly the highlight of any Moroccan adventure, there’s more to this country than just surfing. You find yourself wandering through the bustling medinas, discovering the enchanting architecture and savoring the flavors of Moroccan cuisine. The tantalizing aroma of tagines and the spices of the local markets are experiences you won’t want to miss.

Going beyond the coast, Marrakech and Fez offer a mesmerizing journey through time with their intricate palaces, ancient medinas, and vibrant street life. And how can anyone miss the deep blue of Chefchaouen , nestled in the mountains?

Surfing in Morocco: The Crowd Factor

Unfortunately, not everything is perfect in Morocco, and, as in other countries where surfing is booming, the crowd factor is a reality.

Not only the main surfing spots are filled with surfers from all over the world when the swell is good, but the local surfers and bodyboarders dominate the peak and often drop on you or don’t give you a chance to catch a wave.

Your best chance is to befriend the locals or go with the local surfing schools.

Did you know that Morocco’s World Bodyboard Champion will be hosting us on STA’s Morocco Surf Tour?

Of course, the surf crowd in Morocco varies depending on the season and the specific break. Taghazout can get extremely busy during winter as European surfers flock to the consistent waves. In contrast, spots like Imsouane can be quieter and provide more space to enjoy the waves.

Regardless of the crowd factor, don’t be discouraged, and know that the stoke of catching waves transcends language barriers.

In conclusion, Morocco is an unrivaled surf destination, offering a compelling blend of world-class waves, rich culture, and a welcoming surf community.

Whether you’re chasing epic swells, immersing yourself in the local culture, or simply seeking a new adventure, Morocco’s shores will leave you with unforgettable memories and a longing to return.

In the end, you’ll say: “Shukran (Thank you), Morocco, for the waves, the memories, and the unforgettable journey.”
