finally something new, different! Its this 2d or 2.5d?

I think this is 2D, because while 2.5D can have two-dimensional upright elements, the floor at least has to be actual 3D. But the ground here isn't 3D, it's all flat artwork. They've simulated depth of field and the multi-plane camera effect, but because no actual geometry shows up in the game's landscape, I think it's specifically 2D.

I've been following this for years! Can't wait!

“Voyage” Takes You On a Beautiful Hand-Painted Journey – Nintendo Switch Review

Voyage game nintendo switch review

Voyage is a beautifully hand-painted whimsical and colorful adventure spanning different worlds of earthly magic featuring a narrative that leaves you wondering “what happened here?”

I was provided with a free digital copy of Voyage on the Nintendo Switch. The opinions I have shared are my own.

Adventure in gaming comes in a seemingly endless ocean of different interpretations and each and every time there’s a story to tell that takes us on a journey into unknown worlds across vast lands. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to play Voyage before the upcoming August 12, 2022, release of the title on the Nintendo Switch and other platforms . The game has been developed by Venturous (a quite fitting name) and published by Ratalaika Games . I have to begin this review by praising Voyage for being a beautiful game in concept, sound, and art style.

You play as two silent protagonists. The game is entirely stripped of any dialogue and supplanted with expressive character movements and a beautifully placed natural ambiance of wind, rain, and soft piano with calming bells and chimes that just feel so incredibly cathartic. It made me think of the way Breath of The Wild seamlessly layers its sound to give you an almost ASMR-like experience as you explore. Psychologically speaking, Voyage does its darnedest to help you escape and I have to say it does so successfully.

Voyage nintendo switch review

As previously mentioned, our main duo are silent and their identities are so vague that it truly lets you interpret the game as you wish. From what I can gather and interpret from my playthrough is that the duo is a boy and a girl. They are trying to find their way back home and find themselves getting lost in the draw of these worlds untouched by humanity. You explore beautifully painted forests with vines and giants trees with branches you can travel across, scorching desserts with sand obscuring your view, dark and lonely caverns filled with strange plants that seem to be conscious, curious, and alive, mystical prismatic radiant stones of power, star fields with ancient ruins that seem to tell a story just beyond my reach of understanding. It all felt so wonderful and mystifying.

Voyage felt like being given ten puzzle pieces in a set of one hundred and being asked what kind of story can I make out of it. I wanted to know more about these worlds and encounter the wandering spirits who have walked the very path I tread. Trying to understand a lost world with no answers is strangely a part of this game’s charm. You need to experience it for yourself.

Gameplay-wise, Voyage is simplistic with minimal button presses. You get to explore, can switch between both characters, call and halt your other half and also embrace them for a hug, and interact with your environments by pushing stone statues or tearing spiderwebs away. And lastly, a summoning of light to guide you to points of interest to progress your adventure. The puzzles never felt frustrating or too difficult. The characters also move at a pace that lends itself to allowing players to really take in the environment.

Now, for the big question. Who is this game for? If you’re looking for a title with combat and violence, Voyage is completely free of both so you may have to look elsewhere. But if you’re a casual gamer or a lover of calming soundscapes, strange new worlds, or maybe just the power of friendship, I’d say Voyage is the game for you.

I say with gentle sincerity that this game is perfect before bed to fall asleep to or even to decompress after a long day. And I think there needs to be a bigger market for games belonging to such a genre. With all the craziness out there, it’s nice to slip into unknown realms and have the ability to escape somewhere else, if only for a little bit.

Much praise to everyone who played a part in breathing life into Voyage and sharing it with the world.

Do make sure to make the journey to play Voyage from wherever you buy your games from. You won’t regret it!

Voyage is an A.I. gaming paradise where bots write the rules

If you play a lot of video games, you’re no stranger to competing against a machine. Play a game like Halo Infinite   long enough and you’ll probably bump into a few bots that aren’t the smartest Spartans on the battlefield. But what if you could play games with a genius A.I. that actually feels like it’s listening and responding to you like a human?

Out of the dungeon

A new voyage, bringing life to the lifeless.

Voyage is a new A.I. gaming platform featuring unique games built around machines. The experimental project is spearheaded by Latitude, the studio behind A.I. Dungeon . In that text-based adventure game, a machine fluidly crafts a story by responding to everything a user types, just like an RPG dungeon master. It was an impressive trick in 2019, but it’s only the beginning of what Voyage has in store for players.

“ A.I. Dungeon was the seed of a promise, where what if you weren’t bound by prewritten things?” Latitude CEO Nick Walton told me when we sat down for an interview on the project. “We’ve always seen A.I. Dungeon as 5% of what we want to build.”

Through an expanding list of curated games and creation tools that’ll let anyone make an A.I. experience, Voyage hopes to bring a little life to our cold, digital futures.

Voyage is a direct result of A.I. Dungeon , which gained plenty of curious eyes in late 2019. The game began as a hackathon project that looked to replicate the flexible problem solving that players experience in tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons . Walton began experimenting with GPT, a powerful open source A.I. model that scans data from around the internet.

Walton describes the tech as autocomplete, but with its intelligence blown up 10,000 times. It took a lot of tweaking to get the A.I. working right, with the initial version of the game being nonsensical at times (it would start weaving stories about knights fighting dragons, only to launch into a fantasy game review). After months of dataset fine-tuning — and essentially giving the game humanlike filters — Latitude had created a convincing dungeon master that could virtually react to anything a user typed and spin it into a story. That captured many players’ attention in late 2019, planting the seed for expansion.

“We realized that there’s something here people are really excited about,” Walton tells Digital Trends. “This ability to have these flexible experiences where people have the free ability to solve problems. Instead of fighting a troll, they could offer the troll a cupcake and then bond over their love of pastries and open a pastry shop in the city. They can do all these cool things that are stories that could never happen in another game.”

Voyage, which will launch as a subscription-based service, looks to deliver on that curiosity further with a suite of new games. In Medieval Problems , players take the role of a king who has to solve problems in his kingdom, much like the Reigns series. Rather than choosing between a few options, players will type anything they want and the computer will generate a unique response. Then there’s Things , where players are given random objects and asked to combine them to form something new. There are no set recipes; the A.I. organically decides what players make. Combining a camera and the internet might produce YouTube, for example.

Even more impressive is Pixel This , a multiplayer spin on Pictionary . One player writes out something they want the A.I. to draw, which can get as specific as “dog with a plate of spaghetti,” and other players must guess as the computer slowly creates a doodle.

“We’ve always seen A.I. Dungeon as 5% of what we want to build.”

The platform’s initial offerings sound just as special as A.I. Dungeon , but Latitude’s prebuilt games aren’t the main hook of the platform. Voyage will offer any subscriber the creation tools needed to build their own projects, whether they be games or totally different experiences.

“One of the real powers of A.I. is that it enables human creators to do much more than they could on their own,” Walton says. “To make a Skyrim world, you need hundreds of people and five years building this whole world, but you can imagine having an A.I. that you work with. You’re the creative director and the A.I. is the team. We kind of see ourselves as providing the bridge between A.I. research and everyday users who can create cool experiences without knowing how to code or how A.I. works.”

The intuitive system will let creators make an A.I. bot using natural language. They’ll be able to, say, choose a personality or create a backstory for the machine by just typing it out. The tool will also feature modules that can be chained together to change what the A.I. is thinking or what’s happening behind the scenes. Walton describes it as a visual scripting language that doesn’t require programming knowledge.

“We’ve already seen people create books or even scripts for movies on A.I. Dungeon , and I think we’ll continue to see that pattern with Voyage.”

Latitude’s approach to A.I. gaming is a constant work in progress. The studio is always tinkering with the technology to create bots that better interact with the world. Walton notes that it would be disappointing to talk to an A.I. nonplayable character in Skyrim who tells players to slay a dragon and that he’ll give you a sword — but there’s no dragon or sword.

“There’s a lot more we need to figure out in terms of how you integrate the A.I. on a deeper level with what’s in the world and what the character does to make it more immersive in the way that players dream of,” says Walton.

“We want to be the A.I. engine that powers pieces of the metaverse .”

Even so, there’s a real sense of life in Latitude’s games already. When you play A.I. Dungeon , it sincerely feels like there’s a human reacting on the other end. That’s refreshing in a world that’s becoming cluttered with awkward digital experiences as companies rush to create their vision of “ the metaverse .” Dead-eyed meta avatars and eerily empty digital Walmarts have become laughingstocks to skeptics who find the whole idea of expanded digital experiences somewhat dystopian.

This is how Walmart envisions Shopping in the #Metaverse . Thoughts? 💭 pic.twitter.com/5l7KhoBse7 — Homo Digitalis (@DigitalisHomo) January 3, 2022

Walton says he’s interested in certain aspects of the concept, but feels that the label has been misused as of late. He sees it as an extension of the internet, but with new capacities. In that sense, he feels that Latitude’s work with Voyage could help bring life to some of those creepier experiences floating around.

“We want to be the A.I. engine that powers pieces of the metaverse,” Walton says. “So you have this 3D space that you go in, like your house. And it’s not just an empty place full of assets, but there’s characters you can talk to and hang out with. Think of it as an electricity power grid for the metaverse , powering life into characters and pieces.”

Players can currently sign up to Voyage’s waiting list to get more information about the platform.

Remnant 2 will get its final paid DLC on September 24, but there's something to look forward to even if you don't plan on buying its DLC. On that same day, Gunfire Games and Arc Games will release a free update for Remnant 2 that adds a Boss Rush mode.

If you've played Remnant 2, you know that the boss fights are the best moments of the experience. The procedurally generated campaigns of this Souls-inspired third-person shooter are always at their best when players encounter one of its creatively designed bosses. While bosses in shooters can be button-spongey affairs, each Remnant 2 boss twists the core gameplay loop up and keeps players thinking on the fly. A mode where players can fight the game's bosses back-to-back sounds particularly enticing.

When it launched in 2022, Elden Ring was an immediate hit. The challenging game took everything great from previous FromSoftware titles and merged it with a sweeping open world to explore -- letting players venture in any direction just a few minutes after starting the game. That also made it incredibly daunting. Not only did you have to contend with nightmarish monsters and rage-inducing combat, but you had to figure out how to best reach your next destination without stumbling upon enemies that were twice your skill level.

Thankfully, Elden Ring makes use of a (cryptic) multiplayer system, allowing you to explore the Lands Between with a buddy by your side. You can also read and leave messages for other players, giving them tips and tricks to guide their journey. But is Elden Ring a cross-platform game, or are you stuck playing with folks on the same platform as you?

15 Best Video Games That Let You Sail A Ship

Video games have come a long way since the early arcade days. Battle armies, explore unimaginable landscapes, and delve into worlds of characters that are becoming more immersive than ever.

Related: The Best Open-World Survival Games

However, a game that lets you traverse the open seas from the deck of your ship is a marvel in and of itself. Whether you're playing as a fearsome pirate or merely trying to survive a sea storm through the skin of your teeth, there are plenty of games that allow you to sail your ship while experiencing a one-of-a-kind adventure.

Updated July 7, 2023 by Jacqueline Zalace: Looking for even more ship sailing games? We've added a few more entries to our list. Additionally, we've removed a few that don't quite hit like they used to.

17 Sea Of Thieves

Sea of Thieves offers you the ideal opportunity to be a pirate and live a pirate's life in this open-world, multiplayer, action-adventure game. You can sail the open seas with your crew and engage in naval combat with hostile ships manned by fellow players. Get the best weapons and conquer the notoriously difficult Skeleton Forts to win a Stronghold Key for some spectacular treasure.

The Tall Tales expansion pack and an unforgettable Pirates of the Caribbean crossover make this game stand out even more than it already does - and of course, collecting as much booty as you can is par for the course when you're a pirate.

16 Sid Meier's Pirates!

Sid Meier's Pirates! first launched in 2004 by Firaxis Games, who also brought us the Civilization franchise. In Pirates!, you have the freedom to sail the high seas, explore, and participate in pirate hijinks.

While you won't have the most ship customization options, you will spend most of your time sailing among the Caribbean Islands. Although the game is quite old, it's worth the nostalgic and cozy gaming experience.

15 Assassin's Creed Odyssey

The Assassin's Creed series has come a long way from Assassin's Creed 3, the first game in the series where it allows you to sail your own ship. The subsequent games were a gradual improvement to the sailing and naval combat mechanics, with it being the main focus of Assassin's Creed 4 - but it truly came into fruition in Assassin's Creed Odyssey .

Related: Assassin's Creed Odyssey: How To Get The Best Ending

With hundreds of islands to explore in the Greek isles and enemy ships to defeat, the game lets you sail the beautiful, turquoise waters of Naxos, as well as participate in thrilling naval battles. The only thing it's missing is famous sea monsters to really amplify the experience.

Inspired by Norse mythology , Iron Gate Studio's Valheim is a top-notch, challenging survival game where you play as a Viking who's recently died in battle. The objective of the game is for you to prove that you're deserving of entering Valhalla as a glorious, battle-hardened warrior.

Build a house and your very own ship, and travel to other biomes to defeat its resident monsters. Navigate the waters of the ocean biome on your Viking longboat and slay fearsome sea serpents as you demonstrate your battle prowess to Odin. You're in for a memorable afterlife as you sail the monster-ridden waters of Valheim.

13 Ship Handling Simulator

This 2021 iteration of sailing simulator games gives you the ability to steer a variety of ships around the open ocean, as well as how to dock it properly. From Titanic-sized cruise liners to your private one-man yacht, keeping your vessel seaworthy and floating is a real challenge in this game.

With obstacles like icebergs or tempestuous weather, you also have to contend with not trying to smash into other ships. Ship Handling Simulator is definitely as tough and tricky as other simulator games out there.

12 Blackwake

Experience the rough and tumble life of a pirate in Mastfire's Blackwake, a first-person multiplayer game focused on bombastic ship battles and just being the most intimidating pirate imaginable. Scour the open seas on your pirate ship for enemy vessels to attack and loot from.

Natural disasters and rainstorms are a given for the seafaring pirate, along with ship maintenance. Establishing dominance over the seas with your trusty pirate crew as you voyage past volcanic islands and brave Mother Nature.

11 Ultimate Admiral: Age Of Sail

One of the most realistic sailing games ever launched, Ultimate Admiral: Age of Sail allows you to place yourself in the shoes of famous naval commanders like Lord Nelson. With the ability to choose between either the British or American campaigns, you'll get to participate in historic battles and win wars.

The game developers really did a marvelous job trying to make it as lifelike as possible, adding in factors such as varying wind plans for every ship. They even accounted for the course of the wind and how it might affect the amount of damage your attacks will deliver. Historically accurate and detailed ships also boost the realistic factor the developers are aiming for.

10 Sea Dogs

This Russian-made single-player action-adventure RPG sees you play as Nicolas Sharp, whose father was lost at sea since he was a child. Nicolas develops a passion for the sea and the life of a seafarer and sets out to sea as soon as he's old enough.

Throughout your voyage as Nicolas, you'll be presented with the choice of working for three major nations (France; England; Spain) or you can choose to go rogue and become a pirate. With tons of different ship models and naval combat tactics to explore, Nicolas's tale and quest to find his father makes for a seaworthy adventure.

9 Furious Seas

Future Immersive's Furious Seas is an action-packed, first-person VR game where you can make a name for yourself as a pirate with as notorious a reputation as Blackbeard himself. Fire your cannons at enemy pirates or seek out adventures and explore nearby islands.

The game's Survival Mode puts you in a survival-of-the-fittest race in order to come out on top as the undefeated King of the Seas. Keeping your ship in tip-top shape and upgrading it is essential to remaining ahead of your enemies.

8 From The Depths

Did someone say warships? From the Depths is essentially a sandbox warfare game, giving you the freedom to build large warships, as well as a variety of land-based weapons of destruction. With over 1,000 components, you can make any type of ship that your heart desires.

If you want to use pre-built ships, don't forget to check out the community-made blueprints. Many players have created some truly amazing builds that are worth exploring.

7 Maelstrom

Set in a fantastical world riddled with sea monsters and other beasts, Maelstrom allows you to choose from a range of fictitious races, where you can captain your ship as a Dwarf or an Orc. A largely multiplayer game, sail your ship around the Abyssal Ocean, a vast place teeming with gigantic creatures that keep you on your toes.

Any manner of beast can pop out at any time, so looting chests of gold from other ships or unexplored islands is the best way to quickly ramp up your ship's defenses. What's even better is that this game is free to play on Steam.

This game takes peaceful serenity to another level. Taking your boat out to cruise on the sun-dappled, shimmering seas as you seek uncharted shores is one of the best features in the game.

Although not as action-packed as the games in the previous entries, Salt stands out on its own as an open-world survival game that blends tranquillity and the beauty of nature with the hard life of an islander.

5 Black Desert Online

Black Desert Online is a sandbox MMORPG, which means that you can do anything that you want, including building an epic ship. In this game, if you choose to focus on shipbuilding, you can head to a harbor city and get to work.

Here, you will need to complete a few quests and learn the basics of sailing; before you know it, you'll be sailing on the open seas!

Looking for a cozy ship sailing simulator? Sailwind is the game for you. This is essentially a survival game that takes place on a ship, allowing you to explore, fish, and even cook. With ship customization, you can make your ship uniquely you.

Sailwind is slow-paced, much like ship sailing in real life. There are tense moments, but for the most part, you will need to tend to your ship and stay on course, while having a relaxing journey on board. Overall, this is the ultimate single-player game to relax with.

3 Sea of Craft

Sea of Craft is a nautical version of Minecraft. In this game, you will build a ship from the ground up; you can customize it any way you want. There are stages and a simple story that you can play through, but the real fun comes in creative mode.

While in creative mode, you can build the ship of your dreams, experiment with different styles, and create anything you want. As a 'sandbox ocean-building game', you will also need to take real physics into account while playing.

2 The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a bit of an honorable mention, since you won't be sailing a ship for the majority of the game. You can, however, design your very own watercraft using your Ultrahand ability.

This ability allows you to fuse items together with a sticky green goop. By attaching the right combination of platforms, steering sticks, and fans, you can make yourself a boat worthy of sailing all the rivers in Hyrule.

1 Moonglow Bay

Lastly, we have Moonglow Bay . This game is a bit different than the other entries on our list. Rather than sailing on the open seas, you will sail around the town of Moonglow Bay collecting different fish and completing quests.

As you progress, you can upgrade your ship to become more efficient. Overall, your goal is to help the town rebuild and have your fish shop become a hit.

Voyager-19 (Video Game)

"Certain physical principles hold true across massive size differences and create illusions of similarity: A cell looks like a star in supernova, our eyes like a nebula. What if these similarities applied to life at different scales as well?" — Journal entry found in the Voyager-19 Files Log .

Set in a future where Humanity had begun exploring and colonising extrasolar planets thanks to invention of hibernation technology as well as slower-than-light star drives, you are the pilot of ' Voyager-19 ', one of a series of rudimentary, inexpensive, highly-claustrophobic spacecrafts equipped with such technologies designed to allow one crew to spend years to decades by themselves in interstellar space exploring distant star systems. In this game, you had been chosen to undertake a series of seven missions in the remote Okrulu Sector, taking pictures and radio samples of planets you encounter there, hoping to find habitable planets there which could be subjected to further exploration and eventual colonization.

Or at least, that is your official mission. Unofficially, you had also been sent there to ascertain the fate of the Magella Science Expedition, which had deviated from its original course and which Earth subsequently lost all communications with over there. Your ship is basic and your systems will gradually fail from power loss and radiation exposure as you explore the Okrulu Sector, but your superiors assured you if you plan everything well and managed your limited power supplies - and not go insane from claustrophobia or taken out by the harsh conditions of space - they should last long for you to complete your missions.

This game contains examples of:

  • Absent Aliens : Subverted. The game initially seems like it mainly relies on Nothing Is Scarier , Space Madness , and a mutiny breaking out during the Magella Science Expedition , but it turns out that several of the planets that the player analyzes are not only alien lifeforms, but a mature specimen ends up consuming the player. It's also heavily implied the aforementioned Magella Science Expedition was consumed by another similar alien prior.
  • The Alleged Computer : The intro blurb flat-out states that the spacecraft's electronics are limited in capabilities and will only get worse as space conditions wear the spacecraft down. The only advance thing about it is that it's a touch-screen (even then it is available commercially as far back as the 1980s), but the controls are clunky, the OS looks outdated, everything takes at least a few moments to load (the files you can read in the file log can take years to decrypt), and the screen becomes filled with static as the degradation of your ship systems worsens.
  • Apocalyptic Log : Some of the text files you find in your craft's file log came from the Magella Science Expedition which becomes accessible after you run into its remains . Yours can become one if you actually maintained communications with Earth throughout the game, especially towards the end .
  • Artistic License – Space : While STL travel between the stars is realistically portrayed to take years even with the fastest non-FTL propulsion systems, travelling between planets within a system shouldn't be that fast - even travelling at near light-speed, the sheer distance between planets meant it would take at least several minutes for the spacecraft to get anywhere, instead of the mere seconds that it's shown to be.
  • The Bad Guy Wins : One of the space monsters succeeds in eating the player and the ship they're in, with the Mission Control on Earth unable to do anything to stop it and its kin from continuing to eat more personnel and ships being sent to the Okrulu Sector.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed : With the option to take yourself off life-support, you can invoke this at any point in the game if you can't stand the isolation of space or the implied slow death from failing systems of your spacecraft. Or to avoid being Eaten Alive by that giant space monster that catches the spacecraft at the end .
  • Big Bad Ensemble : The planet-sized space monsters, one of which turns out to be responsible for the Magella Science Expedition's disappearance prior to the game, and what the player encounters in several solar systems in different stages of its life cycle. A mature one ultimately ends up eating the player.
  • Casual Interstellar Travel : While travelling between the stars takes years, travelling between planets in a system is relatively quick, being able to get from one planet to another in seconds. This may or may not be pure a matter of perspective due to relativistic time dilation in-universe, but otherwise could just be liberties taken with space and rocket science for sake of gameplay.
  • Claustrophobia : One of the most terrifying aspects of the game. Your entire mission is spent stuck inside what is essentially a crude metal coffin, surrounded by nothing but cables and flickering internal lights around you, as well as an interactive screen in front of you. You can only move your head and your invisible arms, but that's about it. While you can move your spacecraft, the clunky controls and automated navigation makes it less like an extension of your body and more like operating a large crane or bulldozer while new to the job.
  • Closed Circle : The entire game begins and ends with the player character inside a spacecraft drifting alone in deep space with nothing but an interactive screen and eventually a giant space monster for company.
  • Cosmic Horror Reveal : There's several planet-sized space monsters lurking among the distant worlds of the Okrulu Sector, likely claiming the area as their hunting grounds, disguising themselves as either barren planets to hide from inquisitive trespassers or habitable worlds to lure in potential prey. One was responsible for destroying the Magella Science Expedition - and now it's going to eat you .
  • Cosmic Horror Story : Space is a cold, dark, and indifferent expanse utterly inimical to all Earthly life, and Earthly life itself is at most trespassing vermin or potential prey to truly colossal and hostile entities out there, which are big enough to be mistaken for or disguise themselves as celestial bodies . If some of the speculations of the text files you can access are accurate, it's entirely possible the whole universe itself or at least the astronomical bodies inside it are alive on some level and Earthly life like humans are little more than bacteria that lives on or inside larger host bodies in terms of scale .
  • Downer Ending : You WILL eventually die out there in space, be it from space conditions, turning off your life-support, or from one of the giant space monsters mimicking a planet eating your spacecraft .
  • Expy : The space monsters are one to Unicron , with the Monster in its mature and true form resembling Unicron's Alternate Mode (complete with sharp teeth and mouthhole), having the same Planet Eater behavior, and being hostile to other lifeforms.
  • Extremely Short Timespan : Played straight perspective-wise and inverted in actuality. Thanks to hibernation technology, it can feel like only minutes have passed every time you explore a different star system, and you can complete the game in around 30 minutes. In-universe the missions are actually much longer, as travelling to the different star systems could take years due to limitations of the STL propulsion systems.
  • Several text logs imply the presence of the space monsters that you encounter throughout the game . One journal entry speculates on the similarities between earthly biological traits and celestial objects and wonders if life could operate on that scale . Another is a fragment of a scientific article or paper detailing the predatory/sexual habits of certain animals on Earth that hunt or attract via mimicry to lure in prey or mates .
  • The internal communications logs of the Magella Science Expedition which become accessible after you run into its remains gives further foreshadowing by noting that a certain habitable planet they spotted earlier is suddenly not around anymore .
  • Finally, in the main game itself, several strange-looking planets keep popping up in multiple star systems which you could've sworn you had already seen and taken readings of earlier .
  • Eldritch Abomination : The space monsters lurking in the Okrulu Sector are these. They're planet-sized, they can move on their own without any apparent space propulsion capabilities , can Chameleon Camouflage their surfaces to look like barren or habitable planets, and finally they can open themselves like a flower to catch and eat prey with a giant rope-like tongue . And given the speculation on the text file it's entirely conceivable they aren't so much giant monsters disguised as planets as they could be actual planets, and all other celestial bodies in the universe could be just like it .
  • Flower Mouth : The planet-sized space monster which gets you at the end opens itself up rather disturbingly like a flower with thin, ribbon-like petals, with a ravening maw at the center of it .
  • Genius Loci : At best, the thing that got the Magella Science Expedition and eventually you is just a giant space monster DISGUISING itself as a planet . At worst, the thing IS a living planet that preys on anything which runs into it . Any differences between the two scenarios are likely just semantics, however.
  • Government Conspiracy : Implied with the ending blurb after all communications are lost with your craft. The authorities on Earth know something very weird is happening in the Okrulu Sector, but have not told the public of it yet , and are implied to have already sent multiple starship crews like your Player Character there on effective suicide missions just to find out what the hell is going on. The blurb grimly notes that they would eventually have to come clean to the public when the losses can no longer be hidden .
  • Hope Spot : Yay, you found a habitable planet in your final mission! Now we can go home and - Wait , why is it opening up and grabbing my spacecraft with its tongue?!
  • Human Popsicle : Reliable hibernation is one of the few technologies which allowed humanity in the game's future to travel to the stars alongside relatively fast space drives.
  • It Can Think : Implied with the planet-sized space monsters. They don't attack just anyone they encounter, apparently opting to wait until wandering spaceships get really close and within range of their longue tongues, only then attacking their prey .
  • Invisible Jerkass : The final planet-sized space monster you encounter in the game spends most of its time pretending to be a habitable planet. It could have taken you out as soon as you got to the final system, but it chose to wait until your ship got a little too close, let your guard down, and left yourself open to attack. It's implied that this is also how it or another space monster wiped out the Magella Science Expedition .
  • Invincible Villain : Once the final planet-sized space monster grabs you with its tongue, there is no escape (except maybe turning off your life support ) .
  • Jump Scare : You get a few during your missions. One involves a micrometeorite hitting your ship's hull. Another is the tongue of the final space monster which eventually eats your spacecraft .
  • Late to the Tragedy : You eventually run into a floating pile of space debris which is all but implied to be the remains of the Magella Science Expedition. There's nothing there beyond an internal communications log that becomes accessible afterwards that can give you any clues as to what happened to them, however .
  • The Masquerade : The ending blurb implies the authorities are hiding what's going on in the Okrulu Sector from the public , but notes that they would eventually have to come clean as they can no longer hide the losses from the missions sent to investigate the anomaly there . They also covered up the fact that the Magella Science Expedition had deviated from its planned course and then went missing .
  • No Name Given : The space monsters that were responsible for the Magella crew's disappearance and which ultimately consume the player are never given a name.
  • Non-Standard Game Over : You can turn off your life support at any point of the game. It will eventually kill you, getting you one of these.
  • Nothing Is Scarier : Apart from some contextual introductory fluff, a mission log on your computer, and a few incomplete text files which become accessible, you know absolutely nothing about what's going on in this game. Not what Earth is like at this time. Not what little humanity knows about the Okrulu Sector. Not a clue about what happened to the Magella Science Expedition. And certainly not what the hell is that thing which ultimately does you in at the end of the game is .
  • Overly-Long Tongue : The final planet-sized space monster eventually catches your spacecraft with one of these, pulling you into its maw .
  • Planet Eater : The space monster that eventually catches your spacecraft is implied to be this trope, given that it's big enough to mimic a planet . It's entirely conceivable that the habitable planet spotted by the Magella Science Expedition disappeared not because the monster was disguising as itself as it, but because the monster actually ate it... and then took its form to lure you in.
  • Ragnarök Proofing : Despite being a cheap, hastily-built piece of crap, the Voyager-19 spacecraft actually holds up pretty well against the rigors of interstellar space travel. Your life support will keep you alive so long as you have enough power for it (and don't turn it off ), and travelling to and across the Okrulu Sector actually takes years as you don't have any FTL drive, with your superiors assuring you that your spacecraft is built to last long enough for you to finish your missions. The Magella Science Expedition's spacecraft is even more impressive, with the internal communications log you can access during the game suggesting that the vessel should be able to last around 60 years, but can be pushed to 100 years at its limit.
  • Red Herring : One of the internal communications logs of the Magella Science Expedition you can access after running into its remains seems to suggest the reason why it deviated off course and disappeared was due to the mission leader cutting off communications with Earth deliberately and taking the expedition off course to investigate some theory or anomaly . It is never revealed whether it has anything to do with what eventually caused them to disappear in the game, but a player might be initially mislead into thinking this is a 'renegade captain' scenario.
  • Resources Management Gameplay : As time passes, your spacecraft's systems began to degrade. This is most apparent with its declining power levels, which steadily becomes less available with each mission, forcing you to ration what you have to each individual subsystem you control to complete your surveys and investigation.
  • The 'Okrulu Sector' sounds phoenetically similar to the Koprulu sector .
  • A hostile Planet Eater that assumes the form of a planet , complete with a mouth full of sharp teeth. Are we talking about the space monster or Unicron ?
  • Sleeper Starship : All starships in this setting are this, thanks to the lack of Faster-Than-Light Travel but the presence of reliable hibernation technology.
  • Slow-Loading Internet Image : Due to limitations in electronics, pictures you take of planets can be slow to load, which can be a bit frustrating if the image is not centered as it mean you would have to start again to take a valid planetary image.
  • Space Madness : It is easy to lose your nerve in this game from sheer isolation of deep space, the claustrophobic environment of your spacecraft and the multiple jump scares caused by space conditions. The fact that you can turn off your life support means it's entirely possible some crews piloting similar crafts could have been lost from pilots being Driven to Suicide by the unbearable conditions. Or taking the easy way out when being caught by a planet-sized space monster like the one lurking in the Okrulu Sector .

voyage video game

  • Suicide Mission : Despite the assurances given to you, you are never expected to return home alive. The authorities know there's something strange over at the Okrulu Sector, and have previously sent multiple other ships and pilots to investigate that they also lost contact with. You are merely the latest sent there to find out what's going on .
  • Super-Persistent Predator : The final space monster which catches your spacecraft at the end is absolutely determined to eat you once its tongue catches your spacecraft, and will absolutely not let go regardless of the player's attempts to evade or escape it .
  • Taken Off Life Support : You have the option of taking yourself off life support, which results in a Non-Standard Game Over . There's just enough time to opt out via that when your spacecraft is caught by the giant space monster at the end, if you believe it is Better to Die than Be Killed .
  • That's No Moon : Those Earth-sized and later Earth-like planets you come across several times? They're actually planet-sized space monsters, one of which is responsible for the Magella crew's disappearance, and you're next on their list.
  • Used Future : Everything looks crude and cobbled together. Your spacecraft, a Voyager-19 one-crew space explorer, is described from the fluff as a hastily-designed and cheaply built piece of crap, filled with rusty cables, flickering lights and an interactive screen with an outdated-looking operating system which gradually becomes filled with static as your spacecraft degrades from power loss and harsh space conditions over the course of your seven missions. Even the remains of the Magella Science Expedition you can run into looks like parts of American or Soviet space stations from the 1970s-1990s .
  • Walking Spoiler : Many of the tropes on this page are hidden under filter to avoid spoiling the surprise that there are aliens the size of planets encountered throughout the game, one of which which may be responsible for the loss of the Magella Science Expedition and of which a mature adult also catches you at the end of the game .
