Herman’s Hermits Starring Peter Noone

February 3, 2024, matinee: doors 2:30 / show 4:00, evening: doors 6:30 / show 8:00.

We are so excited to welcome Hermans Hermits with Peter Noone to Tomball, Texas to perform on the Main Street Crossing stage. What an honor it is to host you for a live concert with an artist up-close. Buy your tickets and read a little more about Hermans Hermits with Peter Noone below.

Peter Blair Denis Bernard Noone is a multi-talented entertainer, who has been delighting audiences nearly all his life. He was born in Manchester, England, where he studied voice and acting at St. Bede’s College and the Manchester School of Music and Drama. As a child, he played “Stanley Fairclough” in the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street. He was also featured in the television series Knight Errant, Family Solicitor and Monro’s Saki Stories.

At the age of fifteen, Peter achieved international fame as Herman, lead singer of the legendary Sixties pop band Herman’s Hermits. His classic hits included: “I’m Into Something Good” “Mrs. Brown, you’ve Got A Lovely Daughter”, “I’m Henry VIII, I Am”, “Silhouettes”, “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat”, “Just A Little Bit Better”, “Wonderful World”, “There’s A Kind of Hush”, “A Must To Avoid”, “Listen People”, “The End of the World” and “Dandy”. Ultimately, Herman’s Hermits sold over sixty million recordings. In all, fourteen singles and seven albums went gold. The Hermits were twice named Cashbox’s “Entertainer of the Year”.

As “Herman”, the photogenic Noone graced the cover of nearly every international publication, including Time Magazine. He performed on hundreds of top-rated television programs and appeared with such luminaries as Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin and Danny Kaye. He also starred in ABC’s musical version of The Canterville Ghost, Hallmark Hall of Fame’s presentation of the classic Pinocchio (in which he played the title role) and three highly successful feature films for M-G-M: Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter, Hold On! and When The Boys Meet The Girls.

Throughout the seventies, Noone performed, composed songs and produced recordings with such artists as David Bowie, Debby Boone and Graham Gouldman. His album with the Tremblers, “Twice Nightly” and his solo effort “One of The Glory Boys” were both critically and commercially successful. With characteristic zeal, Peter took on leading roles in full-scale theatrical productions of Dick Wittington, Aladdin, and Sinbad The Sailor. These live stage spectaculars were mounted at major theatres throughout Great Britain and Noone was highly praised for his outstanding work.

The eighties found Peter starring on Broadway in the New York Shakespeare Festival’s production of The Pirates of Penzance. He won rave reviews for his superb portrayal of the dashing, young hero, “Frederic”. His performance was so well received, that he went on to reprise the role at the world-famous Drury Lane Theatre in London. Noone charmed audiences worldwide as he continued to play “Frederic” with both the U.S. National Touring Company and the International Touring Company of “Pirates.

Accompanied by his band, Herman’s Hermits, Noone consistently plays to sold-out venues the world over. He has a legion of faithful fans (known as “Noonatics”) whose loyalty is unparalleled. Today’s teen girls scream just as passionately as their mothers did back in 1965, prompting VH1 to select Peter as their viewer’s choice for the “Sexiest Artist of the Year”. Most recently, Noone starred in the recurring role of “Paddington” on the CBS daytime drama, As The World Turns. His colorful performances instantly made him a favorite of the soap opera magazines and online message boards. There is no doubt that Peter Noone’s extraordinary talent, disarming wit, handsome features and compelling stage presence will continue to delight fans of all ages, for a long, long time to come.

The Happy Together Tour was one that I had my eye on for a long time, even before the tickets were released, and I couldn’t believe it when the day finally came. All of the acts were absolutely fantastic, but Herman’s Hermits really stood out for me, and it seemed the entire crowd! It’s hard to believe that these guys formed way back in 1963, but boy have they still got it! They sure have.

The vibe at the show was great, everyone was energised and buzzing from the previous acts. The sound was fantastic, and the lighting added spectacularly to the performance value. When Herman’s Hermits came on stage, they were welcomed by a reasonable applause, but it appeared that the audience didn’t know what they were in for – by the end of the set everyone was jumping around, shouting, and singing along.

Nostalgia is a great thing, and hearing tracks like No Milk Today and Mrs Brow, You’ve got a Lovely Daughter had the crowd reminiscing and singing along. Even the younger members of the audience were jamming along to the catchy hooks and melodies half way through their set. This really was a gig for everyone, one not to miss!

Manchester beat/pop outfit Herman's Hermits have appeared under a number of different pseudonyms over the years whilst led by Barry Whitwam and Peter Noone. However since the return of Karl Green in 2014, the original band is back together and are now able to play all the hits in their discography to the loyal crowds.

By looking around the venue, it appears as though some of the ageing audience may have been around to purchase the group's very first album released back in 1965. Although the band members are also ageing now, they still perform with intent and purpose as they clearly still enjoy playing the music and hearing the applause from the crowds and this seems to fuel them to keep going. Tonight's setlist is very much a best of selection with hit singles from their heyday including 'I'm Into Something Good' and 'Just a Little Bit Better' all being aired. The tracks may be dated nowadays, but the manner in which they are delivered is endearing as the group clearly wants to perform a great show for their fanbase.

Great performance! Sounds the same!, High energy, veryinteractive with the audience, funny. The band is totally awesome!

Intro band was not impressive, a bunch of (literally) sweaty old musicians with no charisma, no "moves", didn't move aroubmnd so all audience members were involved and were rather boring

The venue, Coach House, had great seating. Food service was not so good, although the food was good! Drinks were expensive and weak

The Association, Gary Lewis & the Playboys, and Peter Noone (Herman's Hermits) sang at a concert in NY on 9.14.2019

All 3 acts were great !!!

Gary Lewis is still proud that his song "This Diamond Ring" bumped The Beatles from the #1 spot on the music charts back in 1965.

Peter even signed a ton of autographs after the event.

Peter Noone on Life With and After Herman’s Hermits

peter noone on tour

Peter Noone in 2007 (Photo from Wikipedia; used with permission)

In the first part of our interview with Herman’s Hermits’s Peter Noone, the performer, born November 5, 1947, talked about the early days of the band and some of their biggest hits. In this second and final part, Noone addresses the band’s stardom in America, their later days and what he’s done since the Hermits’ breakup.

What was it like the first time you landed in America, got off the plane and saw all those girls screaming? You were already used to that from home, but did you expect to see it here too?

Peter Noone: Well, it grew. It started at the Cavern with one or two girls at the front of the stage. Then it became 10, then it became more. I remember we were [touring] with Dusty Springfield and we pulled the bus into the parking lot of the Liverpool Empire. It was kind of a hometown thing because my parents lived in Liverpool, so I was kind of considered to be a Liverpool act and a Mancunian, which gave me an easier access to all those Liverpool clubs. Dusty was so kind and pleasant. We were really rough, compared to what she was used to. We were really yobs. So we pulled into the back of the Liverpool Empire, and it was clear that 100 percent of the girls outside the bus were screaming “Herman! Herman! Herman!” And she very kindly said, “Well, this looks like your night,” which was very endearing. It’s like when somebody gives you the cup before you win it. That was the turning point, really. We realized then that we could draw people to concerts. We’d only had one single, but the TV thing had helped. We had a following.

Watch Herman’s Hermits perform “I’m Henry VIII, I Am” on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1965

From that moment on, every time we went to work, we got more people who were fans. And when we got to America, it was just a hundred times more of the same thing. They’d gone from two to 20 to 200 to 2,000 to 20,000 in weeks. It was the power of radio, and we were so smart because we didn’t want anything except to be on the radio. The dream was if you got on the radio, you would be on there with Frankie Valli and Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry—all the people that we idolized. So you’d get on the radio and there you were within the same room as all those people. It was my visualization of what the music business was. I was probably only about 15, but I realized that you didn’t need to buy a record to like it. You could buy the ones that you really liked, but you would know all the other ones as well. I knew all the words to Cliff Richard’s songs, even though I never bought one. I liked them, but I didn’t buy them. Radio gave you an opportunity to listen to songs hundreds of times without buying them.

Watch Herman’s Hermits perform “No Milk Today” in 1966

Image was a big part of the band’s success. You guys looked pretty harmless compared to some of the other bands, so you were able to get on TV more, and parents didn’t find you a threat.

You had Andrew Oldham creating the Stones’ bad boy thing, and then we would be the perfect opposite of the Rolling Stones: Herman’s Hermits would go home to their mums and dads in Manchester. But that was true! We didn’t need to act. We were those people. We were like the first punk band because we didn’t have a plan other than to get on the radio. Every gig I do now, I think of the Cavern while I’m up there, because I like to think that that’s where I caught my break. It happened there and at the Twisted Wheel and the Oasis in Manchester. We were probably crap but we connected to the audience.

Watch them perform “Dandy”

What do you think caused the band to lose popularity in the late ’60s? Was it because you didn’t make the transition to psychedelia and heavy rock?

peter noone on tour

This ad appeared in the Nov. 1, 1966 issue of Record World

We got trapped in a world that we didn’t want to be in. We didn’t want to go psychedelic. That would’ve been like, shit, that’s a joke. That’s like going disco, like doing a disco version of “Henry VIII.” And believe me, people suggested that. But we didn’t want to be that. What happened was we’d fallen out with our American label so we only had the English charts. All the big hits that we had after that were when we fell out with the American label. We had “Sunshine Girl” and “My Sentimental Friend” and “Sleepy Joe” and “Years May Come, Years May Go.” They were huge number ones and number twos in England, but never were released in America.

Watch Herman’s Hermits perform “My Sentimental Friend,” one of their final U.K. hits

In 1971, you did a cover, under your own name, of “Oh You Pretty Things” by a young songwriter named David Bowie. He played piano on your version, which went to #12 in the U.K. How did that come about? [ Ed. Note: Noone’s version was titled “Oh You Pretty Thing.” ]

He was this character that was around, and he’d had “Space Oddity.” He’d fallen out with his managers and he was sort of trapped, waiting for his own record deal. He needed money and he played a couple of his songs to Mickie Most, and Mickie Most said, “I think I found the next single.” I said, “OK, great.” He said, “I don’t want it to be a Herman’s Hermits single. I want it to be Peter Noone.” So we went over to the studio and I met with David a little bit and he played me all these songs. Every song he played in the studio, I wanted to record. It was like [songwriter of “A Must to Avoid” and other hits] P.F. Sloan again. But Mickie wanted to do “Oh You Pretty Things.” We couldn’t find anybody who could play the piano like David Bowie played on the demo, so David had to play on the session. He’d never played piano in a session before. He was a very good pianist but he didn’t want to tell anybody that. It was unusual; he only played the black notes, so we had to do it in F sharp.

Why did the Hermits break up in 1971?

We concentrated on England and we wore ourselves out with each other. We got to do the Royal Command Performance. I got the Hermits to dance, which they never wanted to do. They were not actors and they weren’t dancers, but there we were in motion pictures, dancing. We basically fell apart. None of us wanted to do that. I remember [bassist] Karl Green, we finished this show, and it was like, “My goodness, let’s take a break from each other, and when we feel like getting together, let’s get back to that.” He took off his suit and jumped up and down on it in the dressing room: “I’m never fucking wearing this again!” He wanted to be in the Stones. Everybody wanted to be in the Stones.

peter noone on tour

Noone paid tribute to the slain Beatle in this 2015 track

You went solo after that. Did it work out the way you hoped it would?

It really did, because I was able to do all the things I couldn’t do because of being in Herman’s Hermits. I couldn’t do a Broadway show because they would then be unemployed. When I worked on any solo thing, the rest of the group would be unemployed, and that’s not good. That is not a good feeling for them, that they can’t exist without me. I started to get angry that things that had been offered to me were never mentioned. They wanted me to replace Tommy Steele in Half a Sixpence , which would’ve been great for me. I could have done it—not as good as him but I could have done it. But the Hermits had mortgages. You’d go away for six months earning a hundred pounds a week doing something you wanted to do, but the Hermits would lose their homes. All that stuff was going on and I was a kid, so I was immature. I didn’t know that it was not complimentary to say that Jimmy Page played on the record, but you play it better than he does now. [ Ed. Note: Page played guitar on “Silhouettes,” “Wonderful World,” and possibly others. ] You put a 15-year-old kid in charge of the business and it goes badly. I had no idea. The end of it was we did this Royal Command Performance and I was in the dressing room with Tom Jones and Andy Williams and the Hermits had been put on the top floor, with the dancers. I didn’t even know. I was so busy being me that I didn’t even know where they were. I just knew that they played great on stage; they never made a mistake.

Moving up to the present, how many nights a year do you perform now?

I’d say about 160. In 2019, maybe 200 because I did a solo tour in England.

[Noone still performs; tickets are available  here .]

Does it bother you that the Hermits have been passed over by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

No. I’ve never thought about it.

I know [guitarist] Derek Leckenby passed away in 1994. Do you keep in touch with any of the other original Hermits?

All of them. I’m not friends with [drummer] Barry [Whitman], but he’s not a bad guy. The rest of the Hermits are really angry at him because he kind of hijacked the name somewhere along the game, took ownership of the name. It should be co-owned, I think, but you can’t do that. He’s an old man now and he’s doing his thing and I’m happy with the situation the way it is. I still speak to Keith [Hopwood, rhythm guitarist] a lot because we’re still the two people who could manage the business of Herman’s Hermits, the business stuff: the record deals and the publishing. There are all these songs that Keith and I publish, so we’re business partners. And I need a good hang; Keith is a really nice guy. I called Karl to ask him did anybody ever give him a compliment for how great he was? And he said no. So I said, “Well, let me be the first.”

Watch a scene from the Hermits’ 1966 film Hold On!

Will we ever see another album from you?

I do these fun one-offs [guest appearances], which I really enjoy.

Your cover of “Friday on My Mind” is great! Yeah. I did that with the Weeklings. It was their idea. And I did a thing with the Red Button called “Ooh Girl,” which I really liked. I’m enjoying that kind of thing. I’ve got a thing coming out with Carla Olson. We did the Searchers’ song, “Goodbye, My Love.” They’re fun little things that I do. There’s no solo albums now; there’s no such thing as that anymore.

What do you still want to do that you haven’t done?

I want to do this for another 10 years and then see what happens. I’m enjoying doing the SiriusXM thing because it gives me an opportunity to be creative. And I’m going to do this one-man thing [solo shows], because I think I’ve got a good bit of stuff. I’m just going to be me and tell stories about me and play little bits and pieces. And we can do those songs that we never do in the live show, like “Don’t Go Out Into the Rain” and “This Door Swings Both Ways.”

One final question: How do you manage to sound and look the same as you did in 1965?

You know, I think it’s my mom and dad were pretty young-looking until they died. I try to keep healthy, and I have a pretty good spirit. I’m naively optimistic about the future. I don’t get involved in any kind of politics; that’ll keep you young. There’s no reason for me to get angry.

Pete Townshend ‘Empty Glass’: The Who Album That Wasn’t

6 Comments so far

Neil Banoff

I saw Peter in concert many years ago, in the Chicago area. After the concert, I asked him why he doesn’t perform “My Sentimental Friend”, in concert as it is a beautiful song! Peter said it wasn’t a hit in America. Still a great song/performance. Well worth finding on many Herman’s Hermits compilations.

Ray

‘My Sentimental Friend’ was, in my opinion, one of the Hermits’ best songs.

The Csar

I saw Herman’s Hermits at a small bar in 1979. It looked the entire band except for Peter. They were a lot of fun even after all the shots people were sending to them. Saw Peter many years later on his own and was, also, a very good performance, albeit much more professional. Loved them both!

Sharon

Just saw them in Mason City IA (2019) They we’re so good!! Peter and the band really had the sold out crowd going!

Phill Phlash

Saw Peter at the Woodstock Fair (Woodstock, CT) more than a few years back (2009)…an afternoon show for all us geriatrics.

He actually put on a good show, was really enjoying himself.

SHE WHO DANCES

WILKES-BARRE — Peter Noone, also known as “Herman” of Herman’s Hermits fame, said when he and so many super groups that comprised the “British Invasion” of the 1960s were starting out, their main objective was to get one of their songs played on the radio.

Herman’s Hermits sure did that.

At the age of 15, Noone achieved international fame as Herman, lead singer of the legendary sixties pop band Herman’s Hermits.

His classic hits included: “I’m Into Something Good,” “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter,” “I’m Henry VIII, I Am,” “Silhouettes,” “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat,” “Just A Little Bit Better,” “Wonderful World,” “There’s A Kind of Hush,” “A Must To Avoid,” “Listen People,” “The End of the World,” and “Dandy.”

Ultimately, Herman’s Hermits sold more than 60 million recordings. In all, 14 singles and seven albums went gold. The Hermits were twice named Cashbox’s “Entertainer of the Year.”

Peter Blair Denis Bernard Noone, now 76, is an English singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist and actor. He took time Tuesday to speak to the Times Leader about his upcoming appearance in Wilkes-Barre.

Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone will headline a four-act “Evening of Solid Gold” that is coming to the F.M. Kirby Center on Saturday, May 18.

Four acts singing their countless, unforgettable hits, transporting the audience back on a musical journey to a wonderful era in the United States.

Tickets are available at the Kirby Center Box Office, by phone at 570-826-1100, or at kirbycenter.org . Showtime is 7 p.m.

Born in 1947 in Davyhulme, Urmston, United Kingdom — Noone said his hometown is generally regarded as a nice area, known for its suburban feel, green spaces and good amenities offering a balanced lifestyle with proximity to both Manchester city centre and natural retreats.

Noone said his parents, Denis Patrick Noone and Joan Blair Noone, were hard-workers. Noone and his wife, Mireille Strasser Noone were married in 1968, and they have one daughter, Natalie.

Noone fronted Herman’s Hermits from 1964 to 1971, and the group’s sound was styled similarly to the America surf rock they enjoyed listening to. Noone took the nickname “Herman” after the character Sherman in the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoons.

In the U.S., Herman’s Hermits came right after the Beatles and the Dave Clark 5 and just before the Rolling Stones. They outsold even The Beatles in 1965 and were the biggest selling recording act in the world in 1965 and 1966.

Noone said the Rolling Stones said it best:

“If you stop doing this, you’ll probably die.”

Noone said his musical heroes were Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers and Fats Domino.

“The sixties was an an amazing period,” Noone said. “There were so many fantastic people — there were at last 50 performers I wanted to buy their records.”

Noone said when he was growing up and became interested in music, everybody he knew wanted the same thing.

“It was a pretty good time to be in a band,” he said. “And we weren’t competitors — we were musicians and we were all different.”

Noone started naming the bands — the Who, Zombies, Kinks, Animals, Dave Clark 5, The Beatles and many more.

“We just had the same inspiration,” Noone said. “We wanted to be on the radio with Elvis, Roy Orbison, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers.”

Noone talked about how the sixties not only changed music, but also fashion and behavior and hairstyles.

“We just wanted people to buy our records,” Noone said. “We wanted to sing songs that people liked.”

Noone said he still finds it amazing to hear people sing along to songs like “Mrs. Brown” and “Kind of a Hush” — “all over the world.”

Noone said traveling city to city is an adventure — no two audiences are the same.

“I look at it and I’m thrilled that I am paid to do my hobby,” Noone said. “I just wanted to make a record and here I am.”

Noone said he has “an incredible record collection’ and he enjoys hosting “Something Good with Peter Noone” every Saturday on SiriusXM. Noone not only plays the great songs of the sixties, he tells stories about the performers and the songs.

“There’s a saying that goes ‘if you remember the sixties, you weren’t there,’” Noone said. “Well, I was there, and I do remember.”

Noone said he thinks the last 60 years or so have been “the best ever.” He said he’s not sure the next 60 will be nearly as good.

“These years have been the best ever musically,” Noone said. And we listened to all that gear music for free — on the radio.”

Noone said he never has a set list of songs when he performs.

“We always do the big Herman’s Hermits hits and we do some Rolling Stones, Dave Clark 5 — the other night we did Love Potion #9,” he said. “And if the audience likes to sing along, we will be sure to play songs for them to sing to.”

Accompanied by his band, Herman’s Hermits, Noone consistently plays to sold-out venues the world over. He has a legion of faithful fans — known as “Noonatics” — whose loyalty is unparalleled.

Co-headlining the Kirby Center show will be The Brooklyn Bridge, formed when Johnny Maestro, the Crests’ lead singer, joined with Dion’s backup singers and the Rhythm Method’s horn players.

In addition to Johnny’s Crest hits (“16 Candles,” “The Angels Listened In” and “Step by Step),” the Bridge’s hits include “The Worst that Could Happen,” “Welcome Me Love,” “Blessed is the Rain,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Your Husband, My Wife.”

The Happenings, featuring original lead singer Bob Miranda, had four gold records: “See You in September, (International #1 and still ranked in the top 100 summer songs in pop history), “I Got Rhythm,” “Go Away Little Girl” and “My Mammy.”

Opening the show will be Bobby Brooks Wilson, son of Jackie Wilson (“Mr. Excitement”). Bobby recreates the on-stage persona of Jackie, including his uncanny resemblance, voice and moves on songs like “Lonely Teardrops,” “Higher and Higher,” “To Be Loved” and “I’ll be Satisfied.”

Something tells us that everyone attending the concert on May 18 will be in for “something good.”
