About Out Adventures

OUT Adventures was founded in 2008 and has been a provider of exclusive cruises, gay tours and adventure trips for well over a decade. Whether you’re looking to tackle the climb of a lifetime or want to wallow in luxury aboard a private yacht, they offer a slew of packages that deliver great value and great times. In 2020, they even began offering trips for lesbians with tours designed specifically for and hosted by women.

Explore all trips by Out Adventures

We’ve known Rob, one of the founders of Out Adventures since 2015 when we met in Los Angeles. We really like the products they offer, and we’ve even been on a few tours with them in Iceland. They’ve done it all before – resorts, cruises, independent travel, gay vacations and plus traveled with straight tour groups. While traveling with a straight group may not always present an issue, they realized there was room for a better, more comfortable travel experience. They wanted a safe, non-judgmental holiday that would allow you to be yourself while exposing you to parts of the world that not everyone has seen.

We definitely recommend going on a group tour with Out Adventures. Not only will they plan all the necessary details, but you’ll be joined by a group of friendly gays (or lesbians) – both singles, couples and friends traveling together all in the company of knowledge, local guides.

Just finished up my 9th trip with Detours Travel and it was yet again another incredible trip! My first trip was in Costa Rica in 2015. Since then I have traveled with Detours to Peru, Thailand, South Africa, Croatia, Israel/Jordan, Italy, Scandinavia and New Zealand. If you are looking for a memorable trip with amazing adventures, I highly recommend you book with Detours! I am less than a week from returning from New Zealand and already thinking about my next trip.

It’s hard to find almost any business that “gets you” these days. Travel has changed so much in the past few years so it’s a big investment of time, money and expectation when you book a trip. I’ve just completed my 5th tour with Detours and I can’t say enough great things about them. This is a business built from the ground up with a passion for fun, adventure, comfort and value foremost in mind. All the tour leaders with Detours are reflections of the qualities the owner envisions. They’re all about YOU! They know what they’re doing and have never let me down or fallen short of providing an unforgettable experience. If you haven’t yet, book a tour with them and be ready to be amazed at what they do.

As a solo traveller I was a little worried about going on a group trip.  I saw all the other positive reviews and booked. Well there is a reason why the reviews are all 5 stars, I had the most amazing trip to Greece. I felt so relaxed right from the start after meeting all the other guys and our tour guide Oliver. The next 12 days was like having a holiday with all your friends and as a group we got to see and do so many fabulous things together. Oliver was our guide and how lucky were we to have him. He just did everything for us from booking taxis, restaurants, tours and putting information into our group chat so we always new exactly what was happening. He would even put a link in there to find our way back to our hotel after a couple to many drinks which was needed a few times. Detours is 5 star from the moment you make contact with them and continue even after your tour is finished. I just recommend them so much if you are looking to have that trip of a lifetime that you will never forget. I can’t wait for my next adventure with them.

I rarely write reviews but I simply had to write one for Detours after returning from their Italy trip. Honestly, the way I found Detours is that I searched for “Gay tour Italy”. And while there were a number of tour groups offering trips to Italy, Detours had a trip that was closest to the dates I wanted to travel. So I booked the trip and hoped for the best! But I didn’t need to worry, and you won’t need to worry either if you book with them. My trip leaders ended up being Miles & Ollie and they were both knowledgeable, professional, helpful, friendly, entertaining, and adorable. They thought of every detail and even included some surprises along the way. I met some great people and made memories that will last a lifetime. I was genuinely sad when it was over. This trip actually meant a lot to me and thanks to Detours, it was everything I had hoped for and more. I can’t imagine booking with anyone else in the future. Now I just need to decide where to go next!

We are so grateful that we found Detours online when looking for travel options. We recently took a tour through Italy and it felt like first class all the way but for a very reasonable price. Everyone from the initial communication with Maurice in the office who handled our bookings and questions to our interactions with our tour leaders Scott and Miles was top notch. They even helped arrange a last minute cooking class for us which was above and beyond. We look forward to a future trip with Detours as it was not only the best service ever but felt like it was with family the whole time.

I just got home from 12 days in Spain with Brandon (and Clay in training)... this trip was nothing short of amazing. It was my first time to all of the locations on the trip. In real life, I like to be in control of everything... but on this trip, I handed it over to the most unflappable, kind, energetic, creative and outstanding team leader (Brandon) that anyone could wish for. There was not a T uncrossed or an I undotted... in the trip descriptions, it appears that you may have to figure out more than you actually do... if you want a trip where you can leave your brain at home, you can have it... if you want a lot of free time, you can do that too. You always have dinner companions, like minded excursion buddies and photographers if you want them. For purposes of anyone who might think they are too young or old, our age group ranged from 30 to early 60's (I am closer to the older side of that group lol), but it did not make a difference! I would say the trip gave me an opportunity to grow, reflect, energize and enjoy. It was truly one of those trips that make you feel even better about life when it was done. I truly cannot thank Brandon enough for his leadership... Clay for his partnership... and the many friends I made on this trip (you know who your are!)... I haven't laughed as much as I did in this trip in a long time... stop pondering whether you should book it, just do it... you will not regret it!

A Detours travel experience is like no other and I simply cannot recommend them more highly. If you enjoy well-planned, yet flexible itineraries, experienced trip leaders, knowledgeable local guides, high-quality accommodations, and small groups that breed new friendships, then you'll love Detours. We've taken 2 trips with Detours. One to Egypt and one to Thailand & Cambodia. In both cases, our trip leader, Shane, was the ultimate host. We've loved every minute of these trips and will go on another as soon as we can. Detours was started ten years ago (we got to celebrate their birthday in Cambodia!) by guys who are passionate about travel and wanted to build a brand that could extend that passion to their guests. They've cracked that code and we are thrilled to have been referred to them by friends. Detours balances hundreds of factors to build amazing travel experiences that are affordable yet lean into higher quality. This is no budget vacation package but it's also not a luxury package. And speaking of packages, while there is a framework of itinerary and pre-booked activities, there is also a lot of flexibility built-in. With small groups up to about 15 guests, this allows time to go off on your own or in small groups with newly-minted Detourse friends to explore your location. That's perfect for seasoned travelers as well as those who are just beginning to experience international travel. Happy 10th Birthday, Detours! We are so thrilled to have found you and highly recommend that readers of this review visit your website and find their next trip of a lifetime!

I took my first and certainly not the last Detours trip. It was to Portugal and Morocco, in October. My tour Guides Ollie and Shane were awesome. They helped with any questions and looked into any additional activities that you might want to do. I specifically asked about a balloon ride in Morocco that was one of my highlights. The accommodations were all great. This trip exceeded all my expectations. I have always been a solo traveler and it was nice to share this with fellow travelers. I found I did activities I most likely would have not done on my own. Taking a Tajine cooking class, gone on a camel ride, private dinner for the group at someone's home. This gave me the opportunity to explore and understand the culture and perspective of life that I would have missed otherwise. There were many planned activities but also plenty of down time, to do your own thing. I look forward to many more Detours adventures.

Choosing Detours Travel was the best decision I have very made seriously, without a doubt the best vacation I have ever had!!!!! I have never traveled with a group of 16 Gay Men of various backgrounds, interests; to be very honest this was an "out of the box" moment for me which caused much anxiety going in. From the moment I arrived in Athens a day early I reached out via What's App to see who was in town, hooked up with 3 guys in a few hours and the adventure began. Our Leader Brandon who was in contact with us as soon as we began the adventure and continued to check on all the group several times either in person or on line, everyday this man is on top of everything! He instantly wins everyone over with his amazing energetic, positive, humorous, welcoming, kind, warm, personality he knows his business inside and out nothing stumps him he always comes thru even after hours. What a beyond excellent representative for Detours Travel Bravo Brandon!!!!! The trip every detail looked after amazing transfers, hotels, restaurants, scheduled and extra tours offered ( no hard sell just suggestions you may want to pursue or not ) Any of my friends knows I am a tough demanding customer with high standards. I can honestly say all were met no complaints whatsoever ever I would go on another Detours adventure for sure maybe only travel this way from now on Two more things I will share: 1/ I had a little incident with an ATV vehicle no injury to me whatsoever Brandon managed me and was the go between with vendor keeping me informed with calming grace and figuring all out. 2/ before reaching our last destination Brandon shared there was problem with my room but assured me it would be handled as it was; when we reached hotel the management was amazing laid out the options which I agreed to - Amazing Property & Service. That is it...... having a tough time..... without Detours & Brandon getting thru may days without their guidance Cheers to you all,

Wonderfully run tours for gay men. I took their 12 day tour of Spain which included Barcelona, Granada, Sevilla and Madrid. I enjoyed their helpful yet flexible format so much I'm planning my next tour with them. Unlike other group tours, you're not stuck on a bus and forced into their schedule. You can go with the group to popular locations or you can spend time on your own, or both! It's really the best of both worlds, having a reliable tour leader to take you to see the sites--as well as having all the free time you want to explore on your own. There's a walking tour of each city, and a list of the most popular sites. You choose what you want to do, and the tour leader creates a schedule so your interests don't conflict. You go to big attractions, like Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, as a group because they've arranged for tickets in advance (without which you can't get in). Our group leader, Dan, was always helpful, organized, kind, cheerful, always calm, and funny. He made sure we got to see what we wanted to see, either as a group or individually. The 14 gay guys on the trip were all good-natured and easy to get along with. As well as having a great format, Detours is also an excellent value as travel gets more expensive. You stay at lovely, centrally located hotels, with a buffet breakfast included to keep you going all day. The group meets for dinner which you can attend or not, as always, it's your choice. Transportation between cities on the tour are also included. It's a low stress, great fun way to discover the world with like-minded people.

Only the best people to make your trip amazing.

Love lit up Las Vegas as this gay couple's adventure unfolded in pictures

Simone Salton & Marco Girardi of World Mappers in Las Vegas

Las Vegas exceeded the expectations of World Mappers' Simone and Marco, and they captured it all. Follow along as they explore all that the city has to offer for the very first time.

This story is brought to you by our partners at Visit Las Vegas .

Simone and Marco , the globe-trotting couple behind the LGBTQ + travel guide World Mappers , concluded their honeymoon by taking their first trip to Las Vegas. As they spent time strolling the Strip and exploring the Seven Magic Mountains, this couple quickly fell in love with what the city had to offer. Follow along as Simone and Marco experience all of Las Vegas, sharing every moment they captured with their cameras.

What drew you to the iconic Excalibur Hotel and Casino?

Courtesy World Mappers

Staying at the Excalibur Hotel and Casino was a top priority on our Las Vegas itinerary. Simone had always dreamt of sleeping in a castle, making this choice even more exciting for us. While the hotel boasted numerous dining options, we were drawn to a unique experience: " Tournament of Kings ." This immersive dinner experience adapted from the tale of King Arthur was nothing short of spectacular. As we settled into our seats in the medieval-style arena, we were transported back in time to the age of chivalry and knights. The meal was served in true medieval fashion, with hearty fare fit for royalty. We were treated to a feast of succulent roasted chicken, tender beef ribs, and flavorful vegetables, all served without utensils to enhance the authenticity of the experience. The food was delicious and satisfying, perfectly complementing the lively entertainment of jousting knights, thrilling sword fights, and majestic horses. It was a dining experience unlike any other, where we not only indulged in delicious food but also immersed ourselves in an unforgettable spectacle of medieval pageantry.

What was it like experiencing the SlotZilla Zip Line at Fremont Street Experience?

The SlotZilla Zip Line at Fremont Street Experience was absolutely exhilarating! We went up 11 stories to soar from the world’s largest slot machine, and we felt on top of the world. Choosing between the Zip-Zilla zipline and the Super-Hero Zoomline—where you can fly “superhero” style versus seated—was challenging, but we opted for the lower zipline that made for a relaxing ride above the Fremont Street crowds. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, we'd recommend everyone try this unique activity when they visit.

Did New York-New York Hotel & Casino embody the spirit of the Big Apple?

New York-New York Hotel & Casino immediately made us think we were at the heart of the Big Apple. The towering 150-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty greeted us, adding to the electric atmosphere. At the same time, the twelve intricately crafted skyscrapers that make up the resort brought to life the bustling energy of the city. But the real thrill came when we decided to brave their rollercoaster, The Big Apple Coaster—a 180-degree rush of excitement that left us breathless and exhilarated. It was one of the most heart-pounding and crazy experiences we tried and we managed to snap a picture-perfect memory of it against the NYC backdrop.

Share your experience at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas and its likeness to Venice.

As we stepped into The Venetian Resort Las Vegas , it felt like we had been whisked away back home to Italy so strongly that we had to remind ourselves where we were! The Italian-themed resort, with its canals, gondola ride, and stunning art reproductions, resembled Venice so closely that you couldn’t tell the difference. It was incredible being able to experience this all in Vegas. Watching the expressions of the couples aboard the Gondolas, we could tell that it was an enchanting experience to share. Even though we didn’t get the chance to ride in a Gondola, we managed to capture a romantic moment during this experience without having to put our authentic queer selves aside.

Tell us about how your photos of the Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas left the French in awe.

The Eiffel Tower at Paris Las Vegas is another landmark that does not go unnoticed. Upon arriving, we realized that the photos online didn’t do it justice. As one of the city's premier attractions, this half-scale replica of the iconic Paris landmark soared 46 stories high, offering a bird's-eye perspective of the glittering city below. From the moment we laid eyes on it, we were in awe of how real it looked. We even had French guys commenting on our Instagram stories about how identical it was to the real Eiffel Tower in Paris. While there, we got to savor delectable French cuisine at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant , ordering from a menu that features their star Beef Wellington and other classics like Escargots and Foie Gras. With a bird’s-eye view of the Strip and the Fountains of Bellagio lit up in lights, we soaked in the enchanting ambiance with every bite. Our expectations of Las Vegas were high, but this managed to leave us speechless.

How was Luxor Hotel and Casino a dream come true?

Stepping foot into Luxor Hotel and Casino felt like entering a realm of ancient wonder. For Marco, Egypt has long been a passion as he studied Archaeology in college. So, arriving at Luxor and seeing the 30-story pyramid gave us shivers! The interior of the hotel was sensational as well, but once we approached the grand entrance, it amazed us seeing the iconic Pyramid and Sphinx. And at night, when the ray of light illuminated the tip of the Pyramid, it was simply breathtaking. For brunch during our visit, we enjoyed the casual atmosphere and hearty food from The Buffet at Luxor's carving station. Then at night, we savored the premium tequila and decadent south-of-the-border fare at Diablo’s Cantina , immersing ourselves in flavors from around the world while surrounded by vibrant Mexican art. In the beginning, we didn’t think it would be possible for Las Vegas to offer so many activities, but we were wrong. These hotels are pulling from landmarks all around the world, so it feels like a fantasy when you can go from Egypt to Paris, and then to Ancient Rome. That’s what we loved the most.

What intrigued you about the Seven Magic Mountains art installation?

Venturing beyond the Las Vegas Strip, we also made a stop to check out the vibrant colors of the Seven Magic Mountains . Standing tall in the middle of the Ivanpah Valley, these towering pillars of stacked boulders reached heights of over 25 feet. This art installation was at the top of our bucket list as we were fascinated by how magical the location felt given that these giant, colorful rocks were located in the middle of the desert landscape. We couldn't help but marvel at the beauty and wonder of it all.

As a queer couple, Las Vegas swept Simone and Marco off their feet, surpassing their wildest expectations. It offered them more than just entertainment; it was a place where they could embrace their true selves without reservation, allowing them to feel comfortable expressing their love out in the open.

There is no shortage of fun when it comes to traveling to Las Vegas all year round. To plan the perfect vacation for yourself and your family, check out Vegas' LGBTQ+ guides and suggestions for your next trip .

Should I Use a Travel Agent? Our Travel Expert Says It Makes All the Difference.

The new age of travel agents know how to find deals, book off-the-beaten path adventures, and get you out of any jam. Especially if you know who to use.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?

Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?

A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.

A woman soaks in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon.

During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.

And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.

What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?

I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.

Kayak, paddle, raft—a river trip down Costa Rica’s Pacuare is good fun. And Danielle Meyer of Coastline Travel likes to book clients in the riverfront, all-inclusive, 20-suite Pacuare Lodge. “The way to get to the property is by whitewater rafting, so you truly begin with adventure!”

Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.

Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”

Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.

“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”

A man sitting in an open-air vehicle while on safari in South Africa smiles at the camera while an elephant is just over his shoulder, approaching.

Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .

Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.

The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”

When to Consider Using a Travel Agent

For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.

Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.

Dream Trips Delivered

Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.

Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.

Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.

“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.

Tierra Bomba, a 15-minute boat ride from the Colombian capital of Cartagena, is an affordable Caribbean destination with a relaxed pace and soft white sands.

Are Travel Agents Expensive?

It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.

Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.

Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.

Matt Lindsey of LuxeSurfTravel can arrange a surf safari on a 165-foot boat, complete with dive masters. surf guides, and a spa. Guests spend a week cruising around atolls in the Maldives seeking out perfect swell and swimming with whale sharks and manta rays.

Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.

”Totoro Eco-Lodge, in Nicaragua, has always been one of our favorites,” says Dominic Allen of Real Latin America. In addition to its laid-back vibe, it’s spectacuarly placed on Ometepe Island, with views out to the active Conception volcano. Allen recommends volcano hikes, rainforest excursions, tours of a chocolate farm, and sunset paddles in search of caiman.

Value Versus Savings

If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”

Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

Some of the Best Travel Agents in the Adventure World

Some of my go-to resources for finding a person to work with include travel expert Wendy Perrin’s annual Wow List of tried and trusted agents, the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s adviser network , and the ASTA’s advisor directory .

In addition to the agents mentioned throughout this story, others I highly recommend for adventurous travelers include:

  • Dan Achber of Trufflepig , for Africa and the Middle East
  • Miguel Cunant of Sri Lanka in Style
  • Javier Echecopar of Journey Costa Rica
  • Daniel Fraser of Smiling Albino , for Southeast Asia
  • Elizabeth Gordon of Extraordinary Journeys , for Africa
  • Kleon Howe of the Art of Travel , for French Polynesia
  • Jay Johnson of Coastline Travel , for Hawaii and California
  • Antonello Losito of Southern Visions Travel , for Puglia, Italy
  • Rabia Malik of Fora Travel , for general worldwide travel
  • Robyn Mark of Mayamaya Travel , for Africa, the Alps, Patagonia, and Japan
  • Marisol Mosquera of Aracari , for Peru and Bolivia
  • Zach Rabinor of Journey Mexico
  • Raluca Spiac of Beyond Dracula , for Romania

The author immersed in the hot waters of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, with mud on her face. It beats being on the phone trying to reschedule a flight cancellation.

Travel-advice columnist Jen Murphy is now a believer in using a travel agent. Thanks to their expertise and connections, she’s avoided dozens of trip catastrophes.

Travel Light With the 15 Best Sleek and Stylish Crossbody Purses, Sling Bags, and More — From $14

Handpicked by someone who hates traveling with a big bag.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

No matter the destination, traveling can be an amazing experience, and having the right purse can make your life on the road smoother. But what if you’re someone who doesn’t love carrying a big bag as you stroll through a farmer’s market in Seattle or hike Rocky Mountain National Park?

Don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of suggestions for you. These days, large purses are far from a necessity. We found 15 travel purses and bags that will hold everything you need without weighing you down — and they’ll fit right into an overhead bin or under the seat if you’re flying. That's not even the best part: These top-rated styles, ranging from sleek sling bags and belt bags to RFID-blocking crossbody purses and backpacks , start at just $14.

Kedzie Quilted Puffer Crossbody Bag

This convertible sling bag from Kedzie has become my go-to travel purse. The zippered front pocket is perfect for lip gloss and receipts while the larger two zippered pockets hold lotion, wallet, phone, gum, and more. You can wear this like a crossbody or over your shoulder, plus, a second strap is included if you want to wear it like a backpack.

Reviewers have said they want to buy multiples after trying the bag. They have also called it the “perfect size” that " holds everything I need and more ."

Everlane The Recycled Nylon Camera Bag

Yes, this is a camera bag, and you can absolutely carry a camera in it. But it’s good for so much more than that with its adjustable crossbody style strap, two zippered compartments, and an exterior slip pocket. The main body is made with 100 percent recycled nylon while the lining is 100 percent recycled polyester. Tasteful neutrals like black, khaki, and beige will go with anything — saving you precious luggage space.

“It's a great size with enough room for the essentials; it holds my wallet (not a small one), keys, phone, glasses, lipstick,” raved one reviewer. “I love it so much I bought it in two colors.”

Everlane The Cactus Leather Sling Bag

Sling bags are in, and this option brings sophisticated vibes for a girls’ weekend in wine country. Made with organically sourced prickly pear cactus (who knew?), the brand's Desserto material is a fabulous leather alternative. No digging in the bottomless abyss of a giant purse here — it’s got just enough room for just the basics, like a card or two, lip balm, and your phone. Choose from sleek cashew, dark honey, or day-brightening lime green.

“I am also a bare necessity type of girl, so I love the fact that it really only fits my small wallet, phone, and chapstick," one shopper was happy to report. "It will be wonderful for travel as well with a passport."

Patagonia Atom Sling Bag

If you’ve got active travel plans like exploring the Grand Canyon, you’ll want to grab this sling bag from Patagonia. The four color options include two solid hues and two vibrantly color-blocked options, all of which are water-repellant, made with recycled materials, and Fair Trade Certified sewn. Weighing just 12 ounces, it has an impressive capacity of 488 cubic inches with a phone pocket and two main compartments. You can even use it to bring your yoga mat along by using the tuckaway front straps. Now those are Namaste vibes!

According to one reviewer, who hiked not one but two challenges (100 miles in 100 days each), said, “I can always fit more than I think in the outermost compartment. The mesh pocket holds {my} phone perfectly, and it's easy to access everything even when the bag is on.”

Osprey Daylite Pack

Want something slightly larger than a sling bag? This backpack weighs just over 1 pound and can fit a 13-inch laptop in its roomy, three-compartment interior. Its compact size makes it an ideal personal item if you’re flying to your next workcation since it’ll fit right under the airplane seat. You’ll stay hydrated with two side pockets for water bottles and you can keep your keys close by with the attached key clip. Plus, the four solid jewel-tone hues lend just the right amount of understated style.

From hikes to flights, reviewers love this bag for any adventure. One chimed in, “This was perfect for my flight excursion. It's just the right size and shape, [and is] lightweight and comfortable.”

Fjallraven High Coast Crossbody Bag

This crossbody may look like your average purse, but it has a detachable strap that turns the bag into a sleek pouch when you're on the go. It has two main compartments, a key hook, and two interior mesh sleeves to keep everything in its place, whether used as a cosmetics pouch in your checked bag or as a purse while dashing to your airport gate. It's available in olive green and black hues, and both styles are just $50.

Though it's perfect for travel, reviewers love that it makes for a great everyday bag. One REI customer said, “This bag does the tricks great for travel, hiking, [and] dinner out with friends. It holds way more than you think, and the outside pocket is a nice added bonus."

Baggallini Crossbody Bag With RFID-blocking Wristlet

Known for functionality and plenty of pockets, Baggallini crossbody bags live up to the brand’s reputation. Five colors are available, including black and a fun lipstick red. The bag has RFID-blocking protection in the included wristlet for peace of mind while jet-setting, plus three exterior zip pockets. It’ll stow nicely under an airplane seat and you can even machine wash the bag. Bonus: It’s on sale starting at $49 — the lowest price we’ve seen in a month.

“The size is perfect [and has] enough space to fit everything: keys, glasses (two pairs), a wallet, a phone, [and more] odds and ends," a reviewer described. "[There are] zippers to keep everything in securely and just enough compartments to organize."

Arc’teryx Mantis 1 Waist Pack

Into hands-free travel bags? Arc’teryx’s waist pack has a rugged appeal and can be worn around the waist or over your shoulder. At 15 inches wide, the two zippered compartments hold a respectable amount of goods, including your keys with its interior key clip. The Yukon hue is a medium tan and the bag is made from recycled poly material for a durable yet environmentally friendly option that’s less than $50.

Taking to the review section, a traveler explained how useful it is as both a travel and an everyday bag, saying, “While traveling, it was great that it could hold larger portable batteries for phones, wallets, snack bars, keys, coins, etc. The zippers are very robust and zip very smoothly.”

Frye is known for quality leather bags, but with this on-sale option, the brand is bringing in a little shimmer for those who can’t say no to a bit of glam. The three hues include denim blue, oatmeal beige, and dusty rose to match your favorite travel outfits. It has a zippered main compartment with an interior pocket, as well as an outer slip pocket and an adjustable strap.

Reviewers adore this bag and rave that it’s “roomy” yet lightweight. Another happy shopper said even when the bag is full, it still has a slim profile.

Dagne Dover Mara Phone Sling Crossbody Bag

If you’re gifted with the elusive (for me, anyway) skill of packing light, you’ll want to grab this Dagne Dover phone sling bag. It has a crossbody strap that can go from 14.5 to 28 inches, and the bag itself measures just 6.5 inches wide — just enough room for your phone, a lip balm, and a credit card or a bit of cash. You have four colors to choose from, like classic black or a deep moss green.

“I take this literally everywhere with me and have two young kids. It's much easier to fish things out [of] this than any giant bag of kid stuff,” said one clever reviewer. “And it’s trendy and cute when I’m without kiddos.”

Hobo Draft Leather Crossbody Bag

This bag will be your new best friend if you appreciate versatility and a timeless style. Available in all neutral colors (black, white, or tan), it has an adjustable strap that you can remove to transform the bag into a clutch for a night out. The foldover flap gives it extra style while upping its content's protection, and the luxe leather material elevates it into a chic everyday bag.

Reviewers say the bag is soft and holds plenty of items without bulging. One shopper noted it was “perfect” for carrying a wallet and passport during their international travels.

Madewell The Essential Mini Bucket Tote

It’s possible to get the style of a bucket bag without the bulk thanks to Madewell. Measuring just 8.5 inches tall, this bag can be worn as a crossbody or shoulder bag. Plus, it’s structured like a classic bucket bag and has a flat base to keep it upright for easy packing and tracking down what you need inside. The elegant leather bag also comes in a warm brown or a beige hue for a timeless look.

Multiple reviewers have called it a “great bag,” with some calling it the “perfect size.” And it currently has a perfect five-star rating from all reviewers at Nordstrom.

Travelon Women’s Messenger Bag

Have travel plans to busy destinations? Check out Travelon’s anti-theft messenger bag for peace of mind, especially while weaving through crowded stadiums or venues. Its five-point anti-theft features (like a slash-resistant material) make it a smart choice while the front magnetic flap adds style and an obstacle for thieves and pickpockets. Keep your water bottle handy in the side pocket and stash your passport and other important documents in one of many zippered or slip pockets. The classic black version is $80, but select colors (like olive green) are on sale for as little as $51.

It’s easy to see why over 6,200 people have given it a perfect five-star rating. One traveler , who bought multiples, said, “It has excellent security features. All [the] zippers have clasps that secure them. There is a front pocket that works great for cell phone, on the opposite side, one outside pocket that works great for credit cards, passport, etc., and has RFID protection.”

Bostanten Small Phone Crossbody Bag

Available in an impressive 15 colors and patterns, this vegan leather cell phone bag can hold four cards plus a phone, along with some small essentials in the zippered pockets. The crossbody strap is adjustable, but you can remove it and slip this small bag into a larger one if you need more supplies for all-day sightseeing excursions.

“I purchased this for a Caribbean cruise vacation; I fit three passports, credit cards, a driver's license, a hotel keycard, car keys, and a ship sea pass, and still had room for lipstick, a folded excursion map, receipts, and other essentials,” one cruise goer shared . “I’m glad I bought it.”

Maxtop Fanny Pack

Last but not least, this fanny pack is another perfect travel companion if you don’t want to carry around a huge bag. It’s just $14 (but currently on sale for $9) and comes in four colors (black, two gray hues, and pink). Within the zippered main compartment, there’s a hidden pocket to store your cash or passport. Wear it as a classic fanny pack (the ‘90s are back, after all!) or as a sling.

“I bought this cross-shoulder bag for vacation and wanted a nice looking, comfortable cross-shoulder bag that carried just what I needed — that’s what I got,” exclaimed one shopper . Another traveler added , “It feels good worn in the traditional sense, but I do prefer the strap across the shoulders.”

DTPC lodges complaint against trespassers at Vagamon Adventure Park

 alt=

Idukki: The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) in Idukki has lodged a police complaint following an incident where a group of three individuals trespassed into the Vagamon Adventure Park on Sunday night. The Vagamon police have initiated an investigation into the matter, given the misuse and damage caused to the property by the trespassers. The misdeeds of the intruders were discovered when park staff commenced their cleaning duties on Monday morning, only to find liquor bottles and glasses strewn across the glass bridge. Upon reviewing CCTV footage, it was confirmed that the miscreants got into the park around 9 PM on Sunday and vandalised the washroom door, pipes, and drinking water bottles.

While Jitheesh Jose, the secretary of DTPC Idukki, expressed confidence in the ongoing police inquiry, the Head Officer of Vagamon Station emphasised the necessity of bolstering security measures within the park. He pointed out that although police conduct night patrols outside the park premises, there is a need for increased security personnel within the vast park grounds. He further recommended the installation of a barbed wire fence around the park. The glass bridge stands as a key attraction at the Adventure Park, especially during the ongoing summer vacation period. Nearby residents voiced concerns that such incidents could tarnish the park's reputation as a tourist destination.

India’s longest cantilever glass bridge at the Vagamon Adventure Park was thrown open to the public at Kolahalamedu in Vagamon last year. The bridge is located at an altitude of 3500 feet above sea level. The glass bridge remains open every day from 9 am to 6 am and tickets are issued from 9 am. Visitors have to purchase tickets from the new counter and approach the glass bridge only at the time mentioned in the ticket. The glass bridge became a big attraction as soon as it was opened and 11,159 visitors enjoyed the sight till September 22, 2023.

Perth brothers Callum and Jake Robinson went for a quick surf weekend in Mexico. How did it go so wrong?

It was meant to be an idyllic surf adventure down Mexico's north-west coast.

Australian doctor Jake Robinson, 30, flew over to San Diego, where his older brother Callum was based.

Both athletic, outdoorsy adventurers who shared a love of the waves and adventure, they decided to grab a friend — American Jack Carter Rhoad — and head south for a quick surf jaunt.

Like so many before them, they were lured by Baja California's crisp, sparkling waves, as well as the chance to camp on rugged and remote beaches among the wildflowers.

Here, beaches are often referred to by their latitude and in late April, the men visited the K38 surf break.

Rodrigo Leal Bravo from the local surf shop remembers them coming in to buy wax.

"They were excited about their surf trip and they were on their way south," he told the ABC.

He noticed the strong bond between the Australian brothers.

"Their fraternity was so admirable," he said.

Two young men in sunglasses smiling

Callum told Rodrigo they were heading to Punta San Jose, a remote spot which was about three hours drive from the surf shop.

It's only accessible by unsealed roads and the mobile tower coverage is patchy at best, but Rodrigo says he wasn't concerned for their safety

"I did not think anything should happen to those big strong guys, right?" he said.

But when Callum didn't show up to work in San Diego after the weekend, loved ones were confused, then concerned, and then finally panicked.

Three bodies have been found where Callum, Jake and Jack went missing — though they are yet to be formally identified.

"All three bodies meet the characteristics to assume with a high degree of probability that they are the American [Jack] Carter Rhoad as well as the Robinson brothers from Australia," said Baja California's state Attorney-General María Elena Andrade Ramírez.

Mexican authorities have also detained two men and a woman in connection with their disappearance.

As the case is investigated, a devastating picture is emerging of what may have gone wrong on the scrubby cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

A weekend jaunt south of the border

Callum shared glimpses of their Mexican surf trip on his Instagram account.

The first photo shows their white Chevvy packed with boards and towels right near the water's edge.

"....and it begins," Callum wrote as the caption, along with a surfer emoji and a picture of the Mexican flag.

He then added more snapshots of their journey — taco stands, brightly coloured buildings, and Jack beaming with a boom box on his shoulder.

A composite image of Instagram stories taken in Mexico

The stories ended abruptly with a picture of Playa San Miguel, a crop of yellow daisies growing at the edge of the sand.

They were reported missing about two days later, but in Baja California, timelines can be difficult to piece together.

As each wave crests and breaks, as each taco is procured from a local food stand, and as each sunset melts over the Pacific, the days start to blend.

Locals and tourists alike have vague memories of seeing a pair of Australian brothers and their American friend riding the waves on the northern Mexican coast in late April, but exact dates are difficult.

Callum, a 190-centimetre-tall athlete with cascading brown hair, turned heads everywhere he went.

A man with long shaggy hair stands near a graffitied wall

"I remember seeing one guy that ... could have been like, a rugby player or division one football player," visiting American surfer Austin Pickle told the ABC.

"They were smiling and you know, doing like the friendly surfer [chatty] thing. But yeah, nothing super strange.

"And then I just paddled in. I never saw them again."

Ana Cristina Heym Cárdenas works in a cafe about an hour north of Punta San Jose.

She believes one of the men — probably Callum — came in the afternoon of April 28 to ask if she could break a 100-peso note so he could buy a taco from the stand outside.

She was shocked to later hear that they disappeared.

A woman in glasses and a Billabong hoodie stands at a coffee shop counter

"It's not normal here — [the] disappearing of three people in this way and burning their car and all this," she said.

"We know that some areas here in Baja California, they're dangerous.

"We feel very sad because there are good people here [in Baja] who like international tourists. We don't want other people thinking that it is too dangerous for people."

A gun, a burned-out car and a missing phone

It's every parent's dream for their children to stay close in adulthood.

But Debra Robinson sensed something was wrong when her sons stopped picking up their phones during their holiday together in northern Mexico.

In late April, she got on a Baja Facebook group, posted a picture of her boys together and issued a plea.

"They were due to book into an Airbnb in Rosarito after their camping weekend but they did not show up," Ms Robinson posted.

While others in the group tried to reassure her, reminding her that mobile reception in the area is patchy and roads are often unreliable, she insisted their disappearance was "out of character".

"Callum is a type one diabetic so there is also a medical concern. Please contact me if you have seen them or know their whereabouts," she wrote.

"Please please please."

Callum, Jake and Jack were soon reported missing, and Ms Robinson marshalled foreign agencies and police to search for her sons.

A woman holds a press conference

While Baja California is plagued by drug cartels, crimes against foreign tourists are relatively rare, and well-populated areas are considered more safe.

"It is an atypical, exceptional case," Attorney-General María Elena Andrade Ramírez told the ABC.

"We have a tourist influx and a similar case has not occurred."

Yesterday, it was confirmed that three bodies have been discovered in what's described as a well close to where the men were last seen.

Emergency workers stand around a hole in the ground

Forensic investigations are continuing to take place to formally identify them.

The details are not yet known, but at some point, Jake, Jack and Callum were separated from their belongings — including their Chevy, their tents and at least one of their phones.

This week, that phone was traced to a 23-year-old Mexican woman, who has since been arrested.

Her romantic partner and his brother have also been detained, and Ms Andrade Ramírez says they "may be directly or indirectly related to the investigation".

All three suspects were allegedly in possession of illicit drugs, but this incident does not seem to be linked to organised crime.

Another key part of the investigation is likely the remote ranch where the brothers' burned-out car was found.

Burnt out car Baja California

The property is several kilometres from the initial search site and is located south of the city of Ensenada.

"We have secured a cell phone and a firearm," Ms Andrade Ramírez said.

"The firearm was discovered in the pick-up truck belonging to an individual currently under investigation

"A criminal scene has already been processed where we found evidence that someone burned the remains of tents, clothes, drink bottles and some evidence related to this case."

At this stage, investigators are treating this as a potential robbery gone wrong, with the suspects allegedly trying to steal the victims' car.

"This aggression seems to have occurred in an unforeseen, circumstantial manner," Ms Andrade Ramírez said.

"We pledge that this crime will not go unpunished."

'They were together doing something they passionately love'

With three bodies discovered — but yet to be identified — the Robinsons are on their way to Mexico for a task no parents should ever have to complete.

The fact that crimes against foreign surfers are exceptionally rare in Mexico is no comfort when your babies are the unlucky ones.

A man with long hair holds a surfboard

So far, the case appears to have eerie similarities to the slaying of two Perth-born surfers in Mexico in 2015.

Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman were on the trip of a lifetime, surfing down the Baja California coast.

But when they arrived in the badlands of Sinaloa, they were stopped, robbed and then killed by a gang.

But most surfers will tell you, chasing the best waves sometimes takes you to some dangerous places.

"[Punta San Jose] is a beautiful place with perfect waves," Antonio Otanez from the Baja Surfing Association told the ABC.

"But it's very lonely there. And it's like one hour [away down] a dust road. There's no [phone] signal there."

Mr Otanez said the local surf community has been left devastated by the news, but no-one is hurting more than Jake, Jack and Callum's parents.

"Surfing is a passion they both share," Ms Robinson said of her sons.

"Our only comfort right now is that they were together doing something they passionately love.

"We ask people to keep them in their thoughts and prayers."
