Wordle Player Cheat Sheet: Here Are the Most Popular Letters Used in the English Language

There are plenty of different ways to play Wordle , The New York Times' engaging online word-guessing game . Personally, I like to stick with starter words that I know feature some of the most frequently used letters in the English language. (TRAIN and CLOSE are among my favorites.)

But exactly which letters are the most commonly used? I reached out to the big brains at the Oxford English Dictionary  -- you know, the whopping, multi-volume dictionary that no one actually owns, but that your school librarian adored. An OED representative sent me a list in which staff analyzed all of the main entries in the concise version of the dictionary.

"It's worth noting that the piece is pretty old," the OED representative said apologetically. "It mentions that the stats are from Concise Oxford English Dictionary in 2004, although current colleagues aren't sure when the piece itself was written, and I'm afraid we don't have any newer analysis of this sort."

The list may be 20 years old, but I'm going with it. The alphabet isn't like ice cream flavors or musical acts -- no new, trendy letters have been introduced in that time. So whether you're just getting into Wordle, or you want to shake up your starter words and make sure they're still hitting the most common letters, this list is for you.

S begins the most English words

The most common letter is no surprise to most people: It's E, and it's immediately followed by another vowel, A. And those letters are much, much more popular than the final two letters in the OED's list, which are J and Q. (Anyone else surprised that J is used less than X and Z?) 

"The letter E is over 56 times more common than Q in forming individual English words," the OED analysis found. 

It notes that "there are more English words beginning with the letter S than with any other letter."

So Wordle players, bookmark this article, and you might find yourself doing a little better in upcoming games. Here are the letters of the alphabet ranked according to how frequently they showed up in the 2004 Concise Oxford English Dictionary.

Seriously, where are all the nine-letter words beginning with S?

Philip Stenning is puzzled by something he’s discovered about Wordle and Word Wheel puzzles

Since I retired a few years ago, I’ve so far played 829 games of Wordle (seven days a week) and 662 games of Word Wheel (six days days a week in the Guardian), mainly to help keep my mind active.

During that time, I’ve become increasingly puzzled by the fact that there have so far been many (124) different five-letter words beginning with S to be guessed in Wordle games, but no nine-letter words at all beginning with S to be identified in Word Wheel games.

So, given that my surname begins with S, I looked in my big Oxford English Reference Dictionary for an explanation for this, and have found 52 different qualifying five-letter words for Wordle (ie not proper nouns), and 61 qualifying nine-letter words for Word Wheel, in the 22 pages of the dictionary devoted to words beginning with SA.

I’m not so short of better things to do with my time that I was prepared to go through all of the 196 pages of the dictionary devoted to words beginning with S, although I do quite often seem to have found the time to send letters to the editor of the Guardian. Great app but one small but essential thing

I just got this app and I already enjoy it! Though when it says I get free 20 generations, I was hoping I would get a few free generations a day (like 3-5 or something). I was a little bummed out when i see that it’s not the case. So as a suggestion, i would like there be a few free generations a day kind of feature. I’m sure folks would love that. Other than that, I really enjoy this app.

Does Not Work with High Load of Generations

The Niji journey app make my phone hotter than when I’m playing a graphic intensive game like genshin or tower of fantasy. When I begin to do more than 4 generations I only do 3 at a time, my phone gets hot the app basically stops responding. It makes it impossible to look up a previous photo to make generation of it. When you got to your profile it takes 3+ mins to load your list and then once you are there it won’t let you select any of them. The app has more functionality than discord and more options but it’s almost unusable after 10 mins or one visit to your profile page. Please fix this for those who generate high numbers of photos.

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. We have been made aware of this issue, and have released some updates to address this. We are also constantly working towards making the app better, and if you are able to help give us more specific information. We can take a closer, and better look.

Pretty good

Mainly, there are no issues that have really messed with the app or the experience. The app runs smoothly, you can see the image progress, you can choose prompts, and add reference photos which is all amazing. HOWEVER, a big issue I run into is when a ‘Job failed to run’ while using a free trial. It takes one of your free generations without even showing a result. Or if you cancel a generation, you don't get your little trial generation back. The app is good, I’m just not sure if these are bugs or something :)
