Upon reaching Chenonceau, the beauty of this chateau will immediately captivate you. Spanning the Cher River with its unique architectural bridge-like design, Chenonceau is known as the "ladies' castle." It stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of women throughout history, shaped and preserved by powerful female figures across the centuries. Beyond its architectural and historical significance, Chenonceau played a crucial role in World War II, serving as a strategic crossing point into the free zone. The Menier family, the castle's owners at the time, courageously aided people fleeing Nazi tyranny, smuggling them to safety across the river. Then, armed with suggestions from your guides, discover the perfect bistro for lunch before we make our way to our second hotel, Domaine de la Tortinière. This 17th-century castle, nestled in lush gardens, will be our home for the next few days. 3 Regions In France Perfect For A Cycling Wine Tour

french wine bike tour

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • Food and Drink
  • Outdoor Activities
  • Wine Regions
  • Wine Tasting

The Tour de France developed naturally in a country with landscapes that are a paradise for cyclists. Small roads with little traffic wander through an extremely wide variety of countryside. This countryside becomes “terroir” when it is in wine country, and in France, some of the best riding is through these wonderful vineyards. The combined passions of cycling and wine become “velo et vigne” in French, and are wonderful combined activities. Cycling through the countryside in the beginning of the day provides the time and pace to observe, to get to know the terroir in its exposure, color, heat, and soil, so that later in the evening, seated in front of the menu, there is a reason for choices, an appreciation of the sunlight and soil, and its possible influence on the wine in your hand.

The riding provides the connection and an appetite to enjoy the French culinary and wine excellence and diversity. There are a lifetime of choices in France for this activity. It is a rare area in France that does not have vineyards. Here I will share highlights of experiences and information from three exceptional regions: Burgundy, the Loire, and la Côte Vermeille (the Vermilion coast).

Grapes grow in rows in the fields of Burgundy and town buildings.

1. Burgundy

This Is a land of wine legend arcing from the famous white wines of Chablis then south past Dijon, through the famous wine city of Beaune, on to Macon, and finally stretching further south through the Beaujolais nearly to Lyon. The area has many opportunities for cycling, with wonderful combinations of flat lands with rolling hillsides, all covered in vineyards, bordered by ancient stone walls, with hilltops covered in monk caps of forests.

Cycling in the morning will allow an understanding of the complexity of the wines as you pass through domains of diverse soils and changing exposure to the sun, sliced by ravines that channel winds that influence the grapes, and therefore the wines. The geographical features and weather elements that we ride through help explain and add appreciation to the wide diversity of wines and wine quality, from just a few grape varieties (mostly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with some Aligoté, and Gamay in the Beaujolais).

In spite of its fame, Burgundy has a simple, rustic, and authentic feel. Excellent winemaking is in the bones and the blood of the people and the place. There is no need to show off with fancy chateaus, just solid stone, centuries-old structures. Make sure to visit Beaune, one of the wine centers of the world. In Beaune, your choice of restaurants is excellent, and mealtime can take up much of the day. Each of the neighboring towns will have at least one excellent auberge , or inn, and often more to choose from, and each is proud of its own distinctive wines. For a good appreciation and comparison of the wines of Burgundy, a wine tasting at the Patriarche in Beaune is an unforgettable experience.

Pro Tip: The cycle route from Beaune to Santenay is a magnificent ride on a paved cycle track bordered by stone walls draped with rose bushes. This is terroir for distinctive and complex white wines from chardonnay grapes that are among the best in the world (Montrachet, Meursault) and red wines of Pinot Noir (Monthelie, Volnay, Pommard) that are known for elegance and finesse.

Chateau de Chinon in the Loire Valley, France. UNESCO world heritage site.

2. The Loire Valley

For a highlight adventure in the Loire valley, I would advise starting where Joan of Arc started: in Chinon . This is the very center of the Loire. East you have the wonderful vineyards and white wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé and west you will end on the Atlantic coast at Nante with aromatic Muscadet, a perfect match for the shrimps, oysters, and mussels of the Brittany sea coast. In Chinon, you will have a choice of wonderful riding and restaurants, with the very impressive fortress high on the ridge above. The cycling is relatively flat through vineyards of mostly Cabernet Franc, the local red wine. You can also leave the river and pedal up adjacent hillsides.

A special ride is from the Loire river up to Sancerre, with views of the vineyards and valleys below and excellent restaurants and an exceptional white wine to choose from. The pace of cycling will again reward you at least twice, as you get a real impression of these diverse terroirs and as you develop the appetite for evening appreciation of the vineyards that you have ridden through. The Loire is, of course, a concentration of magnificent chateaus that can be linked by bicycle. The choices are extensive, so consider our suggestions for 7 Historic Chateaus In The Loire Valley Where You Can Spend The Night .

Pro Tip: The full cycle route of the Loire valley is well worth doing for those who have the time.

Panorama of Port-Vendres on a summer day, in the Pyrénées-Orientales in Catalonia, France.

3. La Côte Vermeille (The Vermilion Coast)

This is a pocket, a golden triangle of a small collection of towns, tucked against Catalonian Spain, at the meeting point of the Mediterranean and the steeply rising Pyrenees mountains. This region deserves more depth of description than the previous regions as it is an area less known to travelers outside of France. The small towns of Argelès Sur Mer, Collioure, Port-Vendres, Banyuls-sur-Mer, and Cerbère are a string of pearls in inlets separated by significant hillsides at the end of the French coastline before the Spanish border. Perpignan is the biggest town to the North; Barcelona is not far to the southwest.

From each of these towns rise beautiful mountainsides covered in vineyards providing excellent and challenging cycling and walking opportunities. From these old vineyards grow a wonderful and distinctive mixture of reds, whites, rosés, and special naturally sweet wines (Vins Doux Naturels, VDN), not unlike a good Port. The Languedoc-Roussillon wine area stretches from Nimes, in the southern center of France, to the Spanish border. It is a complex patchwork of terroir, grape varieties, and wine quality. Many wine connoisseurs would consider it as one of the best possible wine price-to-quality bargains in France.

La Côte Vermeille is a part of Rousillon but is distinctly unusual with its seacoast and sun-soaked exposure on steep mountainsides of brown schist. This is a special pocket of variety unlike any other in France. It is also interesting in its cultural and linguistic diversity. Here we get the blend of French and Spanish, with Occitan and Catalan as possible local languages. The grapes used in the winemaking reflect this variety as well with black, gray, and white Grenache as well as Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, and a total potential of 27 grape varieties, many of them local and on plants old enough to burrow deeply into this rocky soil in search of the distinctive flavors. Summer cycling here must be done early in the day. These southeast-facing, steep mountainsides get very hot.

A 7 to 8 a.m. departure with an 11 to 12 o’clock finish provides a good day of riding on these mountainsides and allows time for a shower, snack, and siesta before a swim, beach time, and possible snorkeling and diving, all leading up to seaside supper. The riding along the coastline is excellent, with steep, significant climbing and enjoyable winding descents between each village. The roads into the mountains are steep, narrow, and rarely have guard rails. One could easily get vertigo standing on the edge of the road. They seem to be designed to discourage all but the most intrepid from driving them. They can be wonderful for cyclists, but make sure that you have gear ratios for climbing and plenty of water. This is the first rise of the Pyrenees mountains.

Further inland it will get increasingly rugged. From here to the Atlantic, this mountain spine is some of the most challenging riding in Le Tour de France. Following the activities of the day, nothing could be better than settling by the seaside for a much-deserved dinner.

With the sea at your feet, the best meals may include an assortment of seafood. A plate of shrimp with local fresh vegetables and a cool bottle of Collioure white wine is a wonderful end to an active day. With a taste for Spain and the fresh seafood, an excellent and very complete meal is the paella, maybe with a cool rosé. For those with a more robust appetite, the vineyards leading to wooded mountains above, and centuries of Mediterranean and Catalan culture of cuisine, also provide delicious possibilities of wild game, pork, local beef varieties, lamb, a wide variety of sausage, and delicious possibilities with snails. A deeply structured red wine with perhaps a blend of Grenache Noir, Carignan, and Mourvedre from the terraced mountainsides that you rode through that day can complete a circle of appreciation of terroir and wine structure.

This is an area with depth and variety of culture and language, on the seaside with mountains rising above. It has been the inspiration for a variety of French artists, and Collioure is known to be the source of the Fauvism school of art. It is truly a region that expands sustenance of the spirit and the body to the point of inspiration. Following your day of joyful effort, slowly rolling or walking through these wonderful terroirs, cap off your day, and send yourself off to a restful sleep with a glass of the naturally sweet red wines.

Pro Tip: For an excellent meal in a restaurant on the edge of the sea, your feet nearly in the water, the Poisson Rouge , just southwest along the seashore in Port Vendre, is well worth a visit.

Cycling Through the Bordeaux Vineyards: Why You’ll Love Our French Wine Country E-Bike Tours

french wine bike tour

Imagine weaving your way through lush vineyards under the gentle French sun, a light breeze rustling the grapevines around you. Welcome to Bordeaux, a region famed for its wine and enchanting landscapes. Now, imagine experiencing all this on an electric bike, requiring little effort to ride around breathtaking Saint Émilion. At Rustic Vines Tours, we take wine tasting to the next level with our unique, immersive e-bike wine tours of this mesmerizing wine region.

Our innovative approach to Bordeaux wine tourism fuses the thrill of e-biking with the classic charm of prestigious wine tasting. We invite you to join us on a captivating journey through the picturesque wine country as we unravel the tales of Bordeaux, one vineyard at a time.

Rustic Vines E-Bike Bordeaux Wine Tour

Your adventure begins either by taking a shuttle from Bordeaux or directly in medieval Saint Emilion, a quaint French wine village marked by its terracotta rooftops and ancient limestone walls. From here, you’ll embark on a journey across the rolling vineyards, taking in the breathtaking vistas of sun-kissed grapevines stretching out to the horizon. The journey continues towards the beautiful region of Lalande-de-Pomerol and then around the scenic vineyard landscapes of Montagne-St-Émilion.

Our top-of-the-line e-bikes, equipped with the latest technology, make this tour accessible to almost everyone. If you can balance on a bike, the electronic assist system amplifies your pedaling power, allowing you to traverse rolling hills as easily as flat terrains. Now, even the most novice bikers can enjoy the picturesque Bordeaux landscape without worrying about exhausting themselves. The battery range comfortably covers our tour route, ensuring a smooth and exhilarating ride throughout.

The Beauty Of Visiting Saint Émilion, France

Nestled in the heart of wine country, Saint Émilion is more than just a starting point for our e-bike tour – it’s a historical gem that complements the wine experience perfectly. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this medieval village has preserved its architectural integrity and unique character for centuries. From its ancient ramparts to the monolithic church carved from a single limestone cliff, Saint Émilion offers an abundance of historical riches.

As you ride down its narrow cobblestone streets, the village reveals its layered history at every corner. You’ll spot Romanesque ruins, pass under the Gothic arches of the old cloister, and marvel at the formidable King’s Tower. Saint Émilion’s beauty and historical allure add a rich cultural element to our e-bike wine tour.

What to Expect From The Châteaux Visits

The wine culture of Bordeaux comes alive as we visit two prestigious Châteaux during the tour. Each Château, chosen for its exceptional wines and fascinating history, opens up a new chapter in your understanding of Bordeaux’s wine making traditions. You’ll walk through ancient cellars and learn about grape varieties, the art of blending, and the detailed process that turns ripe grapes into exquisite wine.

At each Château, an estate professional leads you in a wine-tasting session. You’ll learn to appreciate the color, aroma, and flavor profiles of different Bordeaux wines, discovering the rich palette of sensations that each glass brings. In addition, a leisurely French-style picnic lunch amidst the vineyards or around the Château offers a chance to savor local cheeses, artisanal baguettes, and other regional delicacies while soaking in the serene beauty of your surroundings.

Experienced English-Speaking Tour Guides

Every tour is led by a knowledgeable, English-speaking guide whose passion for Bordeaux and its wines shines through in their narration. They are well-versed in the region’s history, culture, and viniculture, adding depth and color to your journey through the vineyards. Rustic Vines tour guides do more than just lead the way – they make the landscapes, the vineyards, and the wine come alive with stories and fun antidotes.

As you cycle through Bordeaux’s scenic countryside or sip wine at a prestigious Chateau, our guides are there to answer your queries and share interesting facts about the region. They strive to make the e-bike tour a fun day out and a learning experience that leaves you with a deeper appreciation of Bordeaux’s rich wine heritage.

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Our winemakers and farmers are the sculptors of our landscapes. The vineyards are magnificent paintings whatever the season. It is a real pleasure to discover the beauties of Burgundy - with the Grands Crus of the Côtes de Beaune and Côtes de Nuits Saint Georges, Alsace - with its wine route passing through Riquewihr, Champagne, the Loire Valley - and its well-known wines from Chinon, Sancerre, Bourgueil, Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley . At the end of the summer, during the harvest season, cycle through the vineyards while smelling the ripe grapes. While still in the saddle, think of tonight’s dinner accompanied by a good glass of wine (in moderation of course!).

The Full Way of St James - From le Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

  • Cycling the full Via Podiensis

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous  For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event.  Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

How to Explore Bordeaux Vineyards by Bike

Picture of Polina

Which Bordeaux wine regions can be explored by bike?

The best Bordeaux vineyards to explore by bike are Saint-Emilion , Pomerol ,   Entre-Deux-Mers on the Right Bank, and Margaux on the Left Bank.   You can join a guided bike tour or rent a bike and explore vineyards at your own pace.

Guided Bordeaux vineyard tours on a bike

french wine bike tour

In my experience, most guided bike tours take place in the Saint-Emilion wine region on the Right Bank.  The roads are calmer here and the area is very picturesque with the Medieval town of Saint-Emilion dominating the landscape.

Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, relax and enjoy  postcard-perfect scenery and a wine tasting on your route.

Guided bike tours of Bordeaux vineyards can be private or in a small group.   Most bike tours in Bordeaux wine country would be on an electric bike.

Some guided tours are  half-day , and others last  7-8 hours with a stop for lunch  at a winery or a picnic lunch.   Visiting the town of Saint-Emilion is most likely going to be on your itinerary.

When booking your bike tour, pay close attention to the starting point.  There are two options – meeting your guide in the wine country or meeting in the city of Bordeaux and traveling by car to hit the trails.

The 22 km Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes is one of the most scenic bike rides we have ever done. Follow my guide to help you plan out your own DIY bike tour.

Book your bike rental at Bourgogne Evasion in Beaune.

With 5-star reviews on TripAdvisor, they are the go-to company for bike rentals in Beaune and Dijon.

They were very quick to respond to my inquiries and gave me great suggestions on planning my route. I loved that they had our bikes ready at opening time, and we were able to get biking right away.

Bourgogne Evasion bike rental shop

You have the option to choose from a hybrid bike (20€/day), E-Bike (45€/day), or a road bike (50€/day).

My husband bikes frequently and would have chosen a hybrid bike. However, I knew there were some hills involved and I wanted this to be a very relaxed experience, so I convinced him to get E-bikes.

I have no regrets.

The E-bikes were a blast and also ensured we made it to our wine tastings if we were running a little behind.

E-bikes used on our Burgundy bike tour

Important to note as you select your bike is the bike trail is all paved. There are only a few sections where you have to cross a main road.

The total distance of the Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes is 22 km (13.6 miles), but we did an extra section along the canal from Chagny.

Our total distance came to 30 km (18.9 miles).

If you do not want to do the bike tour on your own, Bourgogne Evasion also offers half-day and full-day group tours .

There are pros and cons to doing a group tour.

One perk of choosing a group tour is you do not have to arrange lunch and wine tastings in advance and worry about being late. It’s all taken care of for you.

One disadvantage to a group tour is you do not experience the full bike route and the extra scenic section along the canal to Chagny.

Also, there’s also not as much flexibility on stopping points. Since we did the bike tour on our own, I could choose when I wanted to suddenly stop and take a photo or spend more time in one town vs. the other.

But this “freedom” also meant we had to arrange wine tastings on our own and had to make sure we were on time, so there was a little more pressure.

If you choose to do a guided bike tour, Get Your Guide offers several highly-rated tours as noted below.

My husband made a map of our Burgundy bike tour using the AllTrails app.

We started using AllTrails several years ago because we hike quite a bit. You can download hiking and biking routes offline, which helps you stay on track. It’s the best $35.99/yr we have ever spent!

Our Burgundy bike tour as seen on AllTrails

In summary, we rented our bikes in Beaune, took the train to Chagny, biked along the canal to Santenay, and then biked our way back up to Beaune via the wine villages of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Volnay, and Pommard.

Refer back to this map as you read through my guide to make sense of the route.

The answer to this question DEPENDS on which wineries and lunch place you choose.

We originally wanted to bike from Beaune to Pommard for our first wine tasting at 10 am, cycle through all the wine villages to Chagny, take the train from Chagny back to Beaune, and then have our last wine tasting in Beaune.

However, we arrived in Burgundy during harvest season.

This is an incredibly exciting time, but it does make it very difficult to schedule wine tastings since everyone is busy. The winery in Pommard could only do our visit + tasting in the afternoon, so we altered our schedule.

Our new schedule required us to take the train to Chagny first and bike our way back up to Pommard and Beaune to make it to the afternoon tastings.

Chagny train station

If you haven’t already, go to the Trainline mobile website .

The best resource we used in France!

It gives you all the train times and platforms to be on. Plus, you can book your tickets directly from the site (all in English!).

The earliest we could pick the bikes up was at 9 am. It takes about 10 minutes to bike from Bourgogne Evasion bike rental shop to the train station in Beaune.

We took the 10:02 am train from Beaune to Chagny. It’s only an 8-10 minute train ride. This local train allows bikes.

Booking a train ticket from Beaune to Chagny

WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ NEXT IS SUPER IMPORTANT.

If you choose a hybrid or road bike, then you will have no problem getting the bike on and off the train.

However, if you have an E-bike, you will need a little muscle because those E-bikes are HEAVY. It’s like having a mini-motorcycle.

The train station does have little ramps on the side to push your bike up to the platform, but my 5’2” frame could not do it. Luckily, I have a super strong husband, who easily navigated my bike for me.

Then once you have the bike on the platform, choose the train cabin that has the bike symbol on the outside.

Bike cabin on train from Beaune to Chagny France

The bike cabin has hooks to hang your bike on. The E-bikes are super heavy and really require strength to position them vertically on the hooks.

I could not physically hang the bike, but the hubby could.

E-bikes on the train from Beaune to Chagny, France

We left our charming boutique hotel La Maison de Pommard and picked up our bikes at Bourgogne Evasion promptly at 9 am. There is a huge parking lot to leave your car.

Easy breezy.

We were doing the full bike route and we had two wine tastings lined up, so we knew we wouldn’t have time for a full sit-down lunch.

Instead, we decided to do a picnic lunch.

Before we got on the train to Chagny, we stopped by the cheese shop of Alain Hess .

If you read any of my blog posts, you will notice a running theme of our travels. We love delicious food & wine, and we love to be outdoors.

So, of course, we had to pick up the famous Delice de Pommard Moutarde cheese from the creator himself, Monsieur Alain Hess.

Beautiful cheeses from Alain Hess in Beaune, France

This delicious creamy cow’s milk cheese is surrounded by mustard seeds, giving it a hint of spice. Although they did not have bread, they did have some crackers which were perfect for scooping up the cheese.

We also purchased some saucisson (dry-cured sausages) to pair with our meal.

The staff was super friendly and helpful in selecting our food products.

Alternatively, if you are doing a shorter bike route and not many wine tastings, you may want to have a nice sit-down lunch.

While we were still in the planning stages, we narrowed our choices down to two restaurants: Le Bistro d’Olivier and Le Montrachet .  Both are located in the town of Puligny-Montrachet.

We purchased our train tickets through the Trainline app .

After an ungraceful attempt at lugging the E-bikes onto the train, we were off! 10 minutes later we arrived in Chagny.

Note: If you decide to start the bike tour from Beaune instead of Chagny, the Bourgogne Evasion bike shop is right next to the entrance of the trail (a 3-minute bike ride).

Super convenient.

Entrance to Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes in Beaune (right next to the bike shop)

This section of the trail was gorgeous.

It was flat and made for a very easy, relaxing ride. The bike trail snaked along the river with very picturesque views seen along the way.

Riding bikes along the canal route from Chagny, France to Santenay

Santenay was a cute little town with a central water fountain in the center surrounded by beautiful flower arrangements.

Santenay, France

We pressed on and very shortly found ourselves SURROUNDED by endless vineyards and beautiful chateaus.

My husband and I just happened to come during the start of the harvest season, which was very exciting to witness. As we biked around, we saw all the pickers gathering the grapes.

Santenay vineyards

By the way, it is hard to get lost except in the little wine villages.

Sometimes you have to look around for a bit to find the bike symbol sign.

Always follow the green veloroute sign as seen below.

Follow the green veloroute signs during your Burgundy bike tour

As we entered Chassagne-Montrachet, we approached a cute little church and then the grand Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet.

Although we did not do a wine tasting here, the Chateau offers several great wine-tasting packages .

If you do a group full-day tour with Bourgogne Evasion , this is one of the wineries they take you to.

Chateau de Chassagne-Montrachet

The surrounding vineyards are gorgeous. We stopped for a lot of photos in this area.

Vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet

Once you arrive at Puligny-Montrachet, the town has a fun roundabout to ride around a few times.

When we were there during harvest season, we had the pleasure of watching the harvest workers celebrating the end of the season by driving around the circle honking and sending out flares.

The excitement was contagious!

We also saw this cool art feature of a cork butterfly as we left the town.

Cork butterfly in Puligny-Montrachet

The wine village of Meursault was my favorite!

Incredibly charming and picturesque. We decided to stop here for our picnic lunch of crackers, Delice de Pommard Moutarde cheese, and saucisson.

Oh, how I love France! All the simple pleasures in life.

If you love cheese, don’t miss my full review of our cheese-tasting class in Paris.

There’s a beautiful fountain in the town square with a few benches to enjoy your lunch.

Charming town of Meursault, France

After you are done eating, there is a public restroom near the fountain to wash up before you continue the home stretch of your bike ride.

Meursault, France

There was not much to see in the town of Volnay. We cycled through pretty quickly. The surrounding vineyards were beautiful.

We stopped for a few photos in front of this beautiful chateau situated among the vineyards in Volnay before we reached Pommard.

Volnay vineyards

The bike ride to Pommard did not take long, and we arrived around 1:30 PM.

We were actually staying at La Maison de Pommard right in town.

Since we were a little early for our first wine tasting, we relaxed on the veranda of our beautiful boutique hotel until it was time.

My husband and I loved our visit to Domaine Lejeune  in the charming town of Pommard.

The staff was super kind to even host us during their busy harvest season. It was incredible to witness the excitement and watch the ladies de-stem the grapes and prepare the juice for the fermentation process.

Harvest time at Domaine Lejeune

One of the staff members showed us around the property, and then we were led down to the cellar for a private tasting of six lovely wines (15€/person).

Reserve in advance!

Wine tasting at Domaine Lejeune

My husband and I cycled the last stretch of our Burgundy bike tour and arrived in Beaune around 3:30 pm.

After dropping our bikes off, we walked 10 minutes over to Joseph Drouhin for our final wine tasting.

Biking on the Veloroute La Voie Des Vignes towards Beaune

If you love wine, please read Wine and War .

When visiting the underground cellars of Joseph Drouhin , you will have a much better context.

Underground cellar of Joseph Drouhin

It was pretty cool to know we were actually walking underneath the streets of Beaune as we were shown around the underground cellars.

In the end, we enjoyed an excellent wine tasting of three whites and three reds from Joseph Drouhin.

No grand crus, but we were able to taste a few premier crus.

Joseph Drouhin wine tasting

Had we not had extra time, we would have dropped our bikes off after our wine tasting at Joseph Drouhin.

The bike shop closes at 6 pm. Since we were running on time, we were able to complete this step before our last wine tasting.

After Joseph Drouhin, we visited the Hospices de Beaune and then drove back to our hotel in Pommard.

Hospices de Beaune

Here is a summary of the time it took us to cycle between wine villages.

Now realize this time includes stopping for MULTIPLE photos, and we were riding on E-bikes. Although this was a relatively easy ride, I was still thankful for my padded bike shorts .

  • Chagny to Santenay: 25 minutes
  • Santenay to Chassagne-Montrachet: 30 minutes

Wine routes: 8 exceptional itineraries to discover the vineyards of France

Inspiration

Food and Wine

Sur la route des vins d'Alsace, la plus prestigieuse des route des vins de France.

Reading time: 0 min Published on 28 March 2024, updated on 15 April 2024

Take a tour de France via its vineyards! From Alsace to Provence to Bordeaux and Burgundy, there are as many wine routes to travel by car, bike, boat, electric scooter, on foot - or even by hot air balloon, as there are wines to discover along the way. Taste local products, join in the fun at village festivals, visit vineyards, castles, and their wine cellars… here are eight ways to enjoy gourmet, festive, cultural, sporty and wellness visits - in moderation of course!

Most historic: Alsace Wine Route

The oldest wine tourist route in France labeled ‘Vignobles & Découvertes’, will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2023. Here’s an ideal way to experience this Alsatian route and follow the 170km historic road which features 51 grands crus from seven grape varieties: from Marlenheim in the north to Thann in the south, admire the castles and flowery villages, several of which are classified ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ (the most beautiful villages in France), as you pass by the sunny hillsides. Discover Eguisheim, whose medieval streets wind around a castle. Bergheim, AKA ‘capital’ of Gewurtztraminer with its half-timbered 15th century houses. And Riquewihr where the many vaulted cellars offer several varieties of wine. The villages are surrounded by walking trails such as in Andlau where markers guide budding artists to sketch the landscapes. Or perhaps you prefer to crisscross the hills by bike (including electric), as the cycle route of the Alsace vineyards runs parallel with the road. It’s a gentle way to explore this area that’s in line with the spirit of the Alsatian winegrowers who were the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture since 1925!

Criss-crossing the Alsace Wine Route Cycling on the Alsace wine route Discover the landscape of the Alsace Wine Route

Most oceanic: Bordeaux wine route

Between the Garonne river and the Atlantic Ocean, Bordeaux, with its internationally renowned Grands Crus, forms the largest vineyard of fine wines in the world . Follow its five wine routes, from the Médoc route and its 60 Grands Crus Classés, to the mythical Saint-Emilion-Pomerol-Fronsac road, and nourish your soul as well as your taste buds. There are castles of all styles, bastides (fortified towns), and even a Paleolithic site in Blaye where there is also a UNESCO-classified citadel. Heritage is an integral part of the landscape but there is always the inspiration to discover the world of wine and take your time to relish every moment. Take a donkey ride, explore the contemporary art trails, follow the bike circuits, and even enjoy some time on the beach in the Médoc with visits to cellars and gourmet aperitifs in castles... And the ultimate delight – sensory experiences which combined wine workshops and relaxation, with sessions of sophrology, tai chi or well-being in the spas which blossom in the middle of the vineyards.

Explore the Bordeaux Wine Route in the Médoc Wine tourism experiences in the Bordeaux vineyards

Most unique: Burgundy wine route

From the cradle of Chablis in the Yonne to the Mâconnais, Burgundy wines represent just 3% of the vineyards of France. But its almost 100 appellations of controlled origin (AOC) include more than a third of grands crus, making it the kingdom of superlative wines! Among the six routes to follow by car, boat or hot air balloon, the route of the Grands Crus of Burgundy is the most sought-after vintage. It features rows of vines separated by low walls and dry-stone enclosures which create 1247 ‘climats’, and these micro-terroirs are all UNESCO listed . This is the perfect route to discover the most emblematic wines including Gevrey-Chambertin, the village has nine grand crus and 26 premiers crus, and the Château de Clos de Vougeot , guardian of the memory of the monk winegrowers... En route, unravel the secrets of the French gastronomic meal in the brand new Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et des Vin de Dijon. And get tipsy on the beauty of the courtyard of the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune and its multicoloured tile roofs in the purest flamboyant Gothic style…

Wine getaways on the Burgundy Wine Route Visit the Cité de la Gastronomie et du Vin de Dijon

Most sparkling: Champagne wine route

Champagne is both an exceptional wine - and a region. The wine heritage of this area is classified by UNESCO in recognition of its historic hillsides, champagne houses, and cellars in Mareuil sur Aÿ, Epernay and Reims! But did you know that in the Cenozoic era, some 65 million years ago, Champagne was under a tropical sea populated by giant snails? In Fleury-la-Rivière, at the Legrand-Latour Champagne Domaine, combine the discovery of wine with paleontology: the Cave aux Coquillages has an extraordinary collection of fossils exposed on the rocky walls of the cellar which explains the origins of the minerality of Champagne. Then explore the underground chalk cathedrals where the precious bottles age away from light and heat. In Reims, dive 18 metres underground in the classified Gallo-Roman chalk beds (fourth century) at Maison Taittinger, and in Epernay hop on a small train to crisscross the 18 kilometres of cellars of Maison Mercier and admire the carvings and illuminations.

Explore the Champagne Wine Route

Most colourful: Provence Wine Route

Provence makes you think of the sound of Cicadas of course, but also of colours: the blue of the sky and the sea, the green of its vines and vegetation... and the pink of its rosé wine! When you think of the wines of Provence, it’s the iconic, fresh rosé that springs immediately to mind. 150 million bottles are produced in Provence each year, and the region is the leading French producer of AOC rosé wine. But the colour chart of Provençal wine routes is as varied as the landscapes - from the shores of the Mediterranean to the green interior of Provence. In Cassis, take a kayak or sailboat ride in the famous creeks, the Calanques, and learn about the white wines of Provence including the Cassis AOC, a deliciously fruity wine. And in the Massif des Maures, between Saint-Tropez and Hyères, immerse yourself in the vineyards of the Côtes-de-Provence La Londe, to discover delectable rosés and red wines. And as you go, discover the heritage of the region: the Roman amphitheater of Fréjus, a classified city of art; the Cistercian abbey of Thoronet; the mansions of Arles, the sunny city at the gates of the Camargue, and Aix-en Provence, at the foot of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, a land of painters and AOCs where rosé, white and red wines are produced…

Explore the Provence Wine Route

Most royal: Loire Valley Wine Route

Discover the longest wine route in France : 800 kilometers from the mouth of the river Loire in the heart of the Berry region. There are no less than five vineyards (51 appellations of all colours) that nestle along the curves of the royal river: Nantes, kingdom of Muscadet; Anjou; Saumurois; Touraine, country of the AOC Chinon and Bourgueil; and the Centre-Loire, from Sologne to Sancerrois. This is a rich area to discover a variety of activities including bike rides, walks, gabare trips (traditional flat-bottomed boats) or electric scooter rides to explore the riverbanks populated by birds and wildlife, troglodyte cellars dug into the tufa (limestone), French-style formal gardens and legendary castles where you can enjoy the vineyards. In Chenonceau, enjoy tastings under the stars on summer evenings, and in Chambord, you can adopt a vine! 14 hectares featuring five grape varieties including Romorantin which was introduced by King François 1st in the sixteenth century, have been replanted to be farmed organically. Take a tasting of white wine which has a golden colour and aromas of peach and pear. Cheers!

Most unusual: Occitanie Wine Route

With 260,000 hectares (including 36% of all organic plots of French vineyards, and combining 87 appellations - including 51 PDOs, the vine shapes the nature of Occitanie. From the wines of the south-west to the sun-drenched wines of Languedoc and Roussillon, this wine routes offers an incredible variety of flavours to explore as you roam. Take a walk guided by winegrowers on the mountainside in Banyuls. OEnorandos® in the Hérault has some twenty labeled walking routes that take in arty cellars, winegrower architecture and scenic points of view. Enjoy aperitifs with winegrowers on mini cruises, enjoy a concert in Gaillac in the Tarn, take a promenade towed by gentle draft horses at the foot of the Cévennes... The most unusual? A tasting of organic Languedoc wines on the roof of the Abbey of Valmagne, one of the most beautiful in Occitanie… or a visit to the only vineyard in France classified as a historical monument. Located in the Gers, its grape varieties are more than 200 years old having survived the phylloxera disaster that affected many vineyards in France.

Most intimate: Corsican wine route

Sciacarellu or vermentinu... These names of Corsican grape varieties remind you of the melodies of polyphonies, the sound of traditional Corsican songs, heirs of a thousand-year-old custom that dates to the Phoenicians (4th century BC). To appreciate the diversity of Corsica’s wines, robust reds, rosé, sweet muscats and whites, simply travel around the Island of Beauty in the footsteps of the 9 AOC vineyards nestled mainly along the coasts. Explore the terraced vineyards of Cap Corse on horseback; or take a hike and aperitif at sunset on the hillsides of the Ajaccio region. Visit the perched vineyards of Bastia and learn about the island’s wines with a renowned sommelier. Or head to the hills of Patrimonio, where the most famous wines are made from niellucciu, a red grape variety... En route, indulge in tastings of local products , cold meats, and tasty cheeses that Corsica is famous for, meet with passionate winegrowers and discover unique sites such as the Calanches of Piana or the needles of Bavella.

Wine and wine tourism in Europe

Wine has long been anchored in European culture. In several countries, it has become a real institution. For more than 4000 years, historical accounts have mentioned wine as part of the lives of European citizens. Wine culture was further developed thanks to the Church, since alcohol made from grapes is used in religious ceremonies.

True spearhead of European trade with the whole world, our know-how has been exported since the time of colonization to the four corners of the planet. World famous wines are produced in Europe. Red, white, rosé, or even champagne and even yellow wine. The biggest producers are France, Italy and Spain. Germany and Austria also produce wine (mostly white) as well as Eastern European countries, and Portugal is more a producer of red wine.

Today wine tourism is developing strongly in Europe. The growing interest of novice oenophiles is notable. Wine is more than a way of life or a drink. It is also a way to discover the extremely rich culture of Europe. Many architecture, art and geology enthusiasts take advantage of an excursion in the wine-growing regions. Specialized offers for stays are developing, aimed at tourists from all over the world but also local inhabitants close to the vineyards and inhabitants of the territory.
