Tourist Police Bangladesh unveils Hello Tourist safety app
Not just a glorified contact book, Hello Tourist also contains maps with the locations of both listed Tourist spots and Tourist police officers, to ensure you never need to feel out of reach of help. The app also contains facilities to submit complaints on the go, rather than having to submit them after the fact.
Perhaps the most important part of the app, however, is an “SOS” button that ensures you only need one tap to notify the authorities that you need assistance.
The app is currently available for Android on the Google Play store, while work on the iOS version is currently ongoing.

Explore Bangladesh Safely: Tourist Police Unveils 24/7 Helpline for Travelers
“On September 25th, Bangladesh Tourist Police introduced a 24/7 helpline at 01320-222222/01887-878787 to enhance safety and security for both local and international travelers exploring the country’s tourist destinations.”
The helpline number was unveiled during a seminar titled “Addressing Future Challenges in Tourism Security: Insights from Bangladesh Tourist Police,” which was organized by the Bangladesh Tourist Police at their headquarters in the capital.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, the Inspector General of Police, graced the seminar as the chief guest, with Habibur Rahman, Additional Inspector General, presiding over the program.
During his speech, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, Inspector General of Police, highlighted the impact of the dedicated Bangladesh Police unit on travelers. He emphasized that both domestic and international tourists now feel secure exploring the country’s tourism destinations, even during the late hours.
The Inspector General of Police also shared compelling statistics, showcasing the positive outcomes following the establishment of the Tourist Police in the country. These included an increase in tourism’s contribution to GDP to 4.4% in 2021 compared to 2.9% in 2013, a rise in employment within the tourism industry to 4 million in 2022 compared to 1.7 million in 2015, and growth in tourism revenue to BDT 2,279 crore in 2021 from BDT 613 crore in 2006. Additionally, Bangladesh’s position in the global travel and tourism index improved from 123rd in 2017 to 100th currently. The number of domestic tourists rose to 42.5 million in 2022 from 13.4 million in 2017, while foreign tourist arrivals increased to 214,000 as of August 2023 from 137,000 in 2015.
The event also featured notable speakers, including Jabed Ahmed, former CEO of the Bangladesh Tourism Board; Ashwani Nayar, General Manager of InterContinental Dhaka; Monowara Hakim Ali, Member of the Bangladesh Tourism Board Governing Body; Professor Dr. Santus Kumar Deb, Chairman of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management at the University of Dhaka; and Shiblul Azam Koreshi, President of the Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh. Dr. Md Masudur Rahman, a Professor from the Department of Marketing at the University of Dhaka, presented the keynote paper.
In their respective speeches, the speakers emphasized that the sense of security provided by the Bangladesh Tourist Police has contributed to the increase in domestic travelers in the country, which now stands at 10 million.
The speakers also stressed the importance of the Bangladesh Tourist Police embracing technology and artificial intelligence to enhance their services at all of the country’s tourist destinations in the modern era.
Tourist Police previously introduced the “Hello Tourist” app and a Facebook page titled “Tourist Police, Bangladesh” to promote their dedicated safety and security initiatives for both local and international travelers.
As the Tourist Police intensify their efforts to ensure traveler safety, the speakers emphasized the critical need to globally promote Bangladesh as a secure destination.
During the seminar, a training manual for the Bangladesh Tourist Police was unveiled. However, the event also addressed several forthcoming challenges that the Tourist Police must confront.
These challenges encompass combating issues such as tourist harassment, tourism infrastructure vandalism, and environmental pollution. The ability of the Tourist Police to communicate effectively with foreign tourists, through multilingual skills, was highlighted as important.
Collaboration among stakeholders and regulatory bodies was underscored as indispensable for the industry’s growth. Moreover, speakers emphasized that a strong public-private partnership is key to further enhancing tourist safety and security.
It was stressed that the Tourist Police should remain vigilant in addressing immoral and illegal activities conducted by travelers, as these actions could have negative impacts on both the environment and the destination’s reputation.
The speakers noted that frequent reassignment of officials hampers the implementation of long-term, sustainable solutions in the sector.
Lastly, the speakers highlighted the scarcity of Tourist Police officials to cover all of the country’s promising tourist sites. They pointed out that there are only 1,394 tourist police officials, whereas the masterplan identifies 1,498 tourist sites.
Addressing this manpower issue, Md Abu Kalam Siddique, Deputy Inspector General of the Tourist Police, mentioned that efforts are underway to increase the number of Tourist Police officials to cover all tourism areas across the country.
Furthermore, the DIG shared that the Tourist Police have already implemented CCTV surveillance at Cox’s Bazar, the country’s most popular tourist destination. The goal is to extend this surveillance to all tourist sites in the country to ensure the utmost safety and security for tourists. This was reiterated in his closing remarks.

Responsibilities, manpower of tourist police to be increased: Minister
The process of enhancing responsibilities of the tourist police and their supporting staff is underway, as Parjatan Corporation has undertaken to provide all types of facilities for visitors at tourism sites, said State Minister for Tourism Mahbub Ali.
"The security of tourists is very important for the tourism industry and we are working on providing all the needed facilities at every tourism destination. A tourist must feel safe while traveling," said the minister.
He was speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of the three-day '12th Chattogram Travel and Tourism Fair' on Thursday at Hotel Peninsula in the port city.

Aviation and tourism magazine, 'The Bangladesh Monitor,' organized the fair where Mahbubul Alam, president of Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was a special guest. Bangladesh Tourism Board (BTB) chief executive officer, Zabed Ahmed, was also present on the occasion.
Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) has undertaken to ensure washrooms, changing rooms, rest rooms and other facilities for tourists at tourist sites. BPC will design the project, Mahbub Ali added.
The minister suggested advancing the country's tourism, giving priority to eco-tourism, with the natural beauty of Chattogram.
"We have undertaken a big project at Parki Beach which is about to end and the construction of Sheikh Hasina Tower outside Cox's Bazar is ongoing. A tourist zone for foreign tourists will also be established at Khurushkul to facilitate the free movement of foreigners as they please," he said.
"A Cox's Bazar master plan is also being drawn up," Mahbub Ali said, adding that "the masterplan will be prepared with ecotourism in mind, where one-stop service is needed for ecotourism, what type of project is required for which site, and more."
Zabed Ahmed said as many as 3 lakh foreign tourists visited Bangladesh in 2019. After that everything came to a standstill after the Covid pandemic and now the tourism industry is regaining momentum.
"If we can take our domestic tourist turnout to four crore, then investors would be interested to invest. A lot of local and foreign investment is needed to further tourism in the country to attract foreign visitors," he said.
Zabed Ahmed suggested increased connectivity and creating alternative tourist destinations.
"Khagrachhari should be the alternative for Sajek, and Sonadia for St Martins. We should also reduce our hotel room rent and airfare. Now more than 35 lakh people are employed in the travel and tourism industry. About 1.5 crore people are indirectly dependent on this sector," Zabed Ahmed said.
Chattogram chamber President Mahbubul Alam said Chattogram is the hub for religious tourism that can attract tourists from Thailand and India, while Sylhet and Chattogram both have spiritual connections for people elsewhere.
About 26 travel and tourism companies will participate in this fair till Saturday, 8 January, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily.
