Vingegaard retains slight lead over Pogacar after Wout Poels wins stage 15

Stage 15 report: The game of poker that is the 2023 Tour de France continued in the shadow of Mont Blanc as the defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard and his closest rival, Tadej Pogacar, bluffed their way to the summit finish of stage 15 at Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc. Jeremy Whittle reports…

Update on who's in what jersey after stage 15

After another exciting mountain stage, there’s been one change in the jersey competitions. While, Vingegaard, Philipsen and Pogacar hold on to their respective jerseys, Ciccone now takes the polka dot jersey from Powless.

Yellow: Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) 62hr 34min 17sec

Green: Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) 323 points

Polka-dot: Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers)

White: Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates)

Stage winner, Poels has been chatting about his victory in the obligatory post-race interview. The 35-year-old is celebrating his first ever Grand Tour stage win, during what is his tenth Tour. He says:

“I’ve always dreamed to win a stage in the Tour, and especially with what happened with the team in the last three weeks with Gino [Mader]. I mean, all the emotions come then. It’s just incredible to win a stage, which was always my dream to win a monument and a stage in the Tour. I’m super happy.”

He says he only started to believe he’d get the win in the last kilometre. “I had to keep fighting,” he says, referencing the battle with van Aert.

Netherlands' Wout Poels celebrates on the podium after the fifteenth stage of the Tour de France.

Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers) +5min 21sec

Adam Yates (UAE Emirates) +5min 40sec

Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) +6min 38sec

The top five on stage 15

1. Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) 2. Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) 3. Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) 4. Lawson Craddock (Jayco Alula) 5. Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious)

Wout Poels of Bahrain-Victorious celebrates his first ever Tour de France stage victory as he crosses the line in Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc.

Phew. That was quite a spicy finish. Updates on standings and a race report from my colleague on the scene will be coming in shortly. I’m going to wrap this up, thank you all for your messages and get ready for my post live blog bike ride.

Vingegaard is coming round but Pogacar manages to roll over the line with him. There is nothing to separate these two, but Pogacar did well try. Rodriguez comes across not long after to cement his place as third on the GC.

Pogacar goes again with 500m to go. He can’t drop Vingegaard.

Pogacar attacks. Vingegaard is on him. There’s 700m to go.

This is tense. It’s 1km to go. What is going to happen? I’m on the edge of my seat.

It’s 2km left for the yellow jersey group. The trio are still together, Yates is still away. Van Aert crosses the line second and is 2min 5sec down.

Adam Yates has just ridden away from Pogacar and Vingegaard. Rodriguez is back. What’s happening??

Wout Poels of Bahrain Victorious wins stage 15!!

Wout Poels has taken the stage win! It’s been a brutal day in the mountains, but the Bahrain Victorious rider has played a blinder.

Holland's Wout Poels celebrates victory at Saint-Gervais.

1km to go: Poels is now more than 1min 30sec clear but van Aert is trying to hang on for second. Pretty remarkable ride from the Belgian given the amount of climbing in this stage.

2km to go: In the yellow jersey group, Gaudu, Rodriguez and Kuss have all been dropped. It’s now just Adam Yates, Pogacar and Vingegaard.

3km to go: Poels’ lead keeps increasing. It’s more than 1min now. He looks unstoppable. Meanwhile, Hindley has dropped off the back of the yellow jersey group but Rodriguez and Gaudu are still in there. Could the final podium positions be decided today?

4km to go: Pidcock has just flown back into the yellow jersey group with a trademark descent. He’d been dropped on Côte des Amerands.

5km to go: Back to the action. In the battle of the Wouts, Poels has extended his lead over van Aert to 40sec. It looks like the stage win could be his.

6km to go: As the lead riders start the ascent up Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc, it feels about time to share the words Tom from North Carolina sent me earlier. He emailed in to say: “So excited about today’s stage to the top of Mont Blanc! Who do you fancy: Pogi or Jonas?”

7km to go: UAE Emirates have now taken control of the yellow jersey group and are pushing hard up the Côte des Amerands. Poels has gone over the top of the climb with a 30sec advantage over Soler and van Aert. Now they head straight for the final climb…

9km to go: Warren Barguil of Arkéa–Samsic looks to have good legs, as he breaks off the front of the chase group. Van Baarle has finally finished his turn on the front of the yellow jersey group.

9km: June in Canada has emailed in to ask after Canadian cyclist Woods. He’s back in the peloton so won’t be troubling the leaders today. Elsewhere, the chase group has hit the climb and Ciccone is eyeing up some more mountain points.

10km: Poels hasn’t waited long. He’s launched an attack and van Aert hasn’t reacted.

Dutch rider Wouter Poels.

11km to go: Here it comes…the leading riders, Poels and van Aert, have started the climb. Soler is just behind, having been distanced on the descent.

18km to go: The lead group are approaching the Côte des Amerands. It’s a second category climb as it’s only 2.7km long but it has an average gradient of 10.9% and a max of 17%. It’ll be a real stinger at this stage in the day. After this, they’ll have a brief respite before going straight into the final climb to the finish.

24km to go: For those following the fortunes of Petit, he’s still hanging on in the gruppetto (20min behind).

29km to go: Now that van Aert is in the lead group, the gap to the peloton has gone out to nearly 7min. Meanwhile, the remainder of the breakaway is 50secs behind and has 15 riders in it, including Ciccone, Guillaume Martin, Thibaut Pinot and Mikel Landa. The green jersey group is 19min behind.

Crash for Neilands in the front group

36km to go: Neilands has been shown leaning up against a concrete wall but seems to be getting up gingerly. From the coverage, it looks like he was trying to grab a bidon from a motorbike and went over the handlebars.

Latvia's Krists Neilands.

42km to go: The lead group now contains Soler, van Aert, Krists Neilands and Wout Poels.

46km to go: Both van Aert and Woods have broken off the group to join Soler. Has van Aert been given the go-ahead to go for the stage win? Meanwhile, van Baarle continues to lead the main group up the Col de Aravis. The gap stays at around 6min. No major talking points in the GC battle yet.

47km to go: Marc Soler of UAE Emirates has attacked. Ciccone, van Aert and Woods are trying to limit the damage.

49km to go: We’re back on the next climb – the Col de Aravis. Really didn’t get much of a break, did they?

Back in the peloton, Jumbo-Visma are setting a high pace with Dylan van Baarle on the front. The gap has been reduced to just over 6min from around 9min earlier.

54km to go: Ciccone goes level with Powless on the King of the Mountains classification. He’ll want to secure a lead on the next climb, which is coming up shortly after a brief descent.

55km to go: Rui Costa is not going to repeat history as he has been caught with 1.5km to the summit. The chase group – now the lead group - has been reduced to 24 riders, including Ciccone and van Aert.

Intermarche–Circus–Wanty's Rui Costa in action during stage 15 of the Tour de France 2023.

56km to go: Could Rui Costa be looking to repeat history? The Portuguese rider went solo up the same ascent 10 years ago to take the stage 19 win in the 2013 Tour de France .

57km to go: It has now been confirmed that Powless is off the back and about 1min 10sec behind the Ciccone group. He could be struggling to stay in the polka dot jersey today.

59km to go: False alarm. Powless is back in. Sorry for any distress caused. Rui Costa is now on his own and has a gap of about 45sec.

61km to go: Bad news for those fans from the USA, as Powless is dropping off the breakaway group. Rui Costa, however, has made it across to Haller and they’re working together.

62km to go: Riders are trying to stay cool any way they can.

Giulio Ciccone douses himself with water to cool down as he cycles in a breakaway during the 14th stage the Tour de France.

64km to go: Rui Costa of Intermarché–Circus–Wanty has attacked to try and bridge to Haller. It looks tough and hot out there. In fact, this stage has the second highest amount of elevation of all the stages in this year’s Tour. The highest amount of elevation comes on Wednesday’s stage next week, a day after the individual time trial.

74km to go: Marco Haller of Bora-Hansgrohe has attacked on the latest descent. According to the commentary, he is a big Arsenal fan.

The next climb, Col de la Croix Fry, is coming up in around 7km. It has been used in the Tour six times previously and was last ridden during the 2018 edition.

After his crash yesterday, @romainbardet is deprived of an explosive stage 15 on roads where he has left his mark The French climber from @TDSM_Firmenich has held the @Strava KOM up Col de la Croix Fry since @dauphine 2018 #TDFdata #TDF2023 pic.twitter.com/IfkvfZ5JEZ — letourdata (@letourdata) July 16, 2023

79km to go: Bryan Coquard of Cofidis has just had a bike change. His handlebars had snapped in half. Didn’t look great and can only imagine how tense it must make him feel having an issue like that.

81km to go: Time for some more data from the Tour.

The battle is relentless, on downhills as well 👊 Both @alafpolak1 at the front and @NPowless in the chase have upped the ante after they passed Col de la Forclaz de Montmin ⛰️ The 🇺🇸 rider was even faster than the 🇫🇷 expert 💨 #TDFdata #TDF2023 pic.twitter.com/GN98ZWkgWg — letourdata (@letourdata) July 16, 2023

85km to go: Alaphilippe and Lutsenko have been caught. With 85km to go and four more categorised climbs to come, there are 39 riders now in the leading group. Ciccone and Powless will be keen to hoover up as many mountain points as they can.

87km to go: Powless, who along with Vingegaard held 54 points on the mountain classification, has now gone back into the lead and has 58 points. Ciccone though is hot on his heels and has pulled back a further two points with his sprint. I know there’s quite a few of you tuning in from the USA and keeping an eye on Powless.

96km to go: Lutsenko reaches the summit of Col de la Forclaz de Montmin with Alaphilippe behind. They have a gap of 40 seconds on the chasers. Ciccone outsprints Powless for third place.

98km to go: With 2km to go on the climb, it’s as you were with Alaphilippe and Lutsenko still holding a 35sec advantage. Ciccone is speeding up in the chasing group.

100km to go: With a subject header that has delighted me (“Annecy/Pastries/Weeping”), Duncan has emailed in to share a story about Annecy, pastries…and weeping. Here it is:

“On the subject of pastries and Annecy, a few years back my wife and I each consumed a staggering mille-feuile (sic)…we then set off immediately and rode the 17km climb from the lake up to the ski station at Semnoz. I could taste the custard all the way to the top and was weeping a little by the end.”

103km to go: Alaphilippe and Lutsenko take a 30sec lead into the base of the first climb, Col de la Forclaz de Montmin. This climb might whittle that 35-man breakaway down a bit.

Alaphilippe wins the intermediate sprint

107km to go: Alaphilippe takes the win in the intermediate sprint and bags 20 points. Lutsenko follows and gets 17 points, while Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X Pro) grabs 15 points. My soigneur (aka boyfriend) is very happy as he has Abrahamsen in his fantasy Tour team.

Thumbtacks in road cause punctures on Tour de France 2023 stage two

Riders puncture in the Basque Country after tacks spread in the road

Luke Durbridge at the Tour de France

A scattering of thumbtacks on the road slowed down some of the riders on Sunday at the Tour de France , with up to 20 thought to have punctured.

The victory on stage two went to Cofidis’s Victor Lafay , who broke a 15-year dry spell for his team at the race, while punctures ruled others out of the finale.

It is understood that tacks were scattered in the road with around 40km remaining, as the peloton approached the Jaizkibel climb.

One of the riders affected was Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), who told TV cameras afterwards that he could feel his cornering was off in the finale. The Brit managed to continue to the finish line in San Sebastián, where he finished fourth.

Jayco AlUla performance director Matt White explained that his rider Luke Durbridge was among those who suffered punctures and was forced to change his wheel.

“Clearly someone has sprayed some tacks on the road in one of the towns,” White told Cyclingnews after the stage. “We would have seen 15 to 20 guys puncture. Some immediately, and some rode through with a slow leak.”

Durbridge was the only rider at Jayco-AlUla that fell victim to the tacks. Cycling Weekly understands a vehicle belonging to another team was also affected.

“It’s a shame,” White continued. “We’re lucky that Simon [Yates] didn’t puncture, but a lot of guys punctured at a pretty important time in the race.”

Intermarché-Circus-Wanty rider Lilian Calmejane counted five tacks in his front tyre after the race. "I don't think I was the only victim of a puncture in the end," he wrote on Twitter. "Know that we can fall and get really hurt with this stupidity, you morons."

It is unknown at this stage how the tacks ended up on the course at the Tour.

Cycling Weekly approached ASO for comment, but was told by the race organiser that they were unaware of the issue.

At the 2012 edition of the race, tacks brought the peloton to a near standstill in the Pyrenees, with around 30 riders, including race leader Bradley Wiggins, suffering punctures. “It was obviously done on purpose,” the then race director Jean-François Pescheux said at the time. “We have the tacks but we don’t know who spread them.”

Last year, a fan at the roadside found a handful of carpet tacks at the summit of the Col d’Aubisque - also in the Pyrenees - the day before the race was due to pass through.

Tour de France 2024: How to watch the cycling Super Bowl, full schedule, livestream info and more

The 111th Tour de France begins in Florence, Italy this Saturday, June 29. The annual long-distance race will bring together some of the biggest names in cycling, including two-time defending champion Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar, Primož Roglič, Remco Evenepoel, Juan Ayuso, Carlos Rodríguez, Adam Yates, João Almeida and Matteo Jorgenson. The Tour De France will cover 2,170 miles across 21 days of racing, finishing in Nice on July 21. This year's Tour will be the first ever to not finish in Paris (due to the 2024 Olympics).

Want to tune into the 2024 Tour de France (AKA the cycling Super Bowl)? Here's everything you need to know about the cycling event, including the odds of who will take home the yellow jersey in 2024, where to stream the 2024 Tour de France and more.

How to watch the Tour de France from the US:

Stream the tour de france.

Tour de France dates: June 29 - July 21

Tour de France TV channel: NBC

Tour de France streaming: Peacock

How to watch the 2024 Tour de France without cable:

Starting at just $6 a month, a Peacock subscription is the easiest way to stream live sports and events airing on NBC, including this year’s Tour de France! On top of access to the Tour de France, the streaming platform is the home of the 2024 Olympics, and the easiest way to stream most live sports and events airing on NBC. You’ll also get access to thousands of hours of shows and movies, including beloved sitcoms such as Parks and Recreation and The Office . For $12 monthly you can upgrade to an ad-free subscription which includes live access to your local NBC affiliate (not just during designated sports and events) and the ability to download select titles to watch offline.

Is there a free Tour de France livestream?

Don’t want to pay for Peacock to watch the Tour de France? UK-based streaming platform ITVX will have a free livestream of their Tour de France coverage throughout the race. To access this free livestream though, you’ll need a VPN.

To watch ITVX from the US, you’ll need to sign up for a good streaming VPN and choose a UK server. From there, you should be able to watch ITVX totally free from the US.

A VPN (virtual private network) helps protect your data, can mask your IP address and is perhaps most popular for being especially useful in the age of streaming. Whether you’re looking to watch Friends on Netflix (which left the U.S. version of the streamer back in 2019) or tune in to a boxing match this weekend without paying the PPV prices, a VPN can help you out. Looking to try a VPN for the first time? This guide breaks down the best VPN options for every kind of user .

Stream free Tour de France coverage

ExpressVPN offers “internet without borders,” meaning you can catch free coverage of the 2024 Tour de France without shelling out for Peacock. All you'll need to do is sign up for ExpressVPN, change your server location to the UK and then find free livestream coverage on one of the streaming platforms mentioned above.

ExpressVPN’s added protection, speed and range of location options make it an excellent choice for first-time VPN users looking to stretch their streaming abilities, plus, it's Endgadget's top pick for the best streaming VPN . New users can save 49% when they sign up for ExpressVPN’s 12-month subscription. Plus, the service offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, in case you're nervous about trying a VPN.

How long is the Tour de France?

The 2024 Tour de France will cover 3,492km (2,170 miles) across 21 days of racing. The longest day of racing will be Stage 3, Piacenza to Turin, at 229km (142 miles).

Mark Cavendish claims record-breaking 35th career Tour de France stage win

Mark Cavendish crosses the finish line and raises a fist in the air

SAINT-VULBAS, France — Mark Cavendish wrote a new chapter of Tour de France history in what is expected to be his last appearance at cycling’s biggest race.

The veteran Isle of Man sprinter broke Eddy Merckx’s long-standing record for most career  Tour de France  stage wins with his 35th victory on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old Cavendish sprinted for the win in the fifth stage of the Tour, pulling away some 100 meters from the line despite being bunched in. He crossed the line ahead of Jasper Philipsen and then celebrated with teammates.

Norwegian rider Alexander Kristoff, who had crashed earlier, finished third. They were given the same time of 4 hours, 8 minutes, 46 seconds.

Sixteen years after his first Tour stage win, Cavendish spoke of his constant hunger for victory.

“I always needed to win one more,” said Cavendish, who was joined by his children on the podium. “It takes a lot to get there every year. I’ve got incredible people around me.”

Two-time champion  Tadej Pogacar  narrowly avoided a crash and finished nestled in the main pack in 35th place. While Pogacar retained the race leader’s yellow jersey, the day belonged to Cavendish.

He  equaled Merckx’s mark  of 34 wins during the 2021 Tour and went close to No. 35 in the seventh stage last year when he was narrowly beaten by Philipsen. He crashed a day later and broke his right collarbone.

Merckx, the Belgian considered the most dominant rider in cycling history, won his 34 individual stages at the Tour from 1969-75.

Cavendish’s decision to give it one more shot paid off.

“I just wanted to get the run-in to do it. I’m a little bit in disbelief. Astana put a big gamble on this year to make sure we’re good at the Tour de France,” Cavendish said. “We’ve done it.”

With his 2023 race ending early, Cavendish decided to put off retirement by a year and came back to try again.

Finally, Cavendish made cycling history, after winning his first Tour stage back in 2008.

Other riders were happy for Cavendish, with several stopping to speak with or hug him after the 177.4-kilometer (110-mile) leg from Saint-Jean-De-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas

Merckx amassed his wins in an era during which his domination was such that he earned the nickname “The Cannibal.” Unlike Merckx, one of four riders to win the Tour five times, Cavendish has never won the overall title, or come close.

But Cavendish’s longevity among his fellow Tour sprinters has no equal.

He won the Tour de France best sprinter’s green jersey twice. He also won stages at all three Grand Tours — the others are the Giro d’Italia and Spanish Vuelta — and became a world champion in 2011.

Cavendish joined Astana after his contract with Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl expired and he was overlooked for the 2022 Tour.

Cavendish had faced a difficult start to this Tour. During the first stage, he appeared to struggle with stomach and heat issues.

“I know how it works, my trainer and everyone around me knows how it is,” Cavendish said. “I’ve done 15 Tours de France. I don’t like to have bad days, I don’t like to suffer but I know it’s just in the head and to push through it.”

Meanwhile, Pogacar has another flat stage to get through safely Thursday, having  reclaimed the leader’s jersey  Tuesday with a brilliant attack near the top of the race’s first big mountain pass.

On Wednesday, he was simply relieved to avoid crashing.

“We were in the bunch and then suddenly something came up in the middle from nowhere. The guys in front of me braked and we touched wheels a little bit, but luckily I escaped,” he said. “I reacted on instinct and was very lucky.”

The 25-year-old Slovenian  leads overall by 45 seconds  from Tour debutant Remco Evenepoel, the Vuelta and world champion in 2022. Pogacar is 50 seconds ahead of two-time defending champion  Jonas Vingegaard  — the Danish rider who was badly injured in  a high-speed crash  at the Tour of Basque Country in early April.

Pogacar is aiming for the rare Giro-Tour double, and for his third Tour title after wins in 2020 and 2021. The last rider to win the Giro and the Tour the same year was the late Marco Pantani in 1998.

Wednesday’s stage saw Clement Russo and Matteo Vercher forming a breakaway after 35 kilometers (22 miles).

Given that French riders won the first two stages through  Romain Bardet  and  Kevin Vauquelin , this may have motivated them. With rain falling, Russo and Vercher were caught with 36 kilometers (22 miles) left.

Stage 6 on Thursday is again suited for sprinters, going through vineyards to Dijon on a mainly flat trek of around 100 miles. The first individual time trial is on Friday.

Meet the Americans competing at the 2024 Tour de France

A general classification win may be out of reach for the American riders in the Tour de France, but ending a three-year stage win drought is well within their grasp.

Sepp Kuss, 29, was the last American to win a stage when he took Stage 15 of the 2021 Tour de France. The Durango, Colorado native is the best rider the country has seen in a decade. Last year, Kuss finished as the top American in 12th place at the Tour de France and won the 2023 Vuelta a España to become the first American Grand Tour winner since Chris Horner won the same race in 2013. However, although slated to be Jonas Vingegaard’s top support rider for the 2024 Tour de France, Kuss withdrew from this year’s edition after testing positive for COVID-19 in the lead-up to the race.

Greg LeMond remains the only American to have ever won the general classification category at the Tour de France, accomplishing the feat in 1986, 1989 and 1990. American Lance Armstrong won the Tour from 1999-2005 but was subsequently stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for doping by the International Cycling Union in 2012 .

So, who is left in this year's race to give the United States a shot at glory — at least for one stage. Here's a look at the three Americans competing at the 2024 Tour de France.

Matteo Jorgenson (UCI WorldTeam Visma-Lease a Bike)

Jorgenson, 25, is having a breakthrough season with an overall victory at Paris-Nice 2024 and a second-place finish at the 2024 Criterium du Dauphine.

Jorgenson is a strong contender in this year's race for the white jersey, which recognizes the best young rider under 26. A versatile rider, Jorgenson — alongside Kuss — is poised to be USA's best hope for a future Tour de France general classification winner. But for now, he will take over from Kuss to play the chief support role for teammate Jonas Vingegaard, who won the 2022 and 2023 Tour de France.

This year will be Jorgenson’s third Tour de France. The Idaho-raised cyclist finished 20th in the general classification standings in 2022 and had to withdraw in 2023 due to injuries sustained in a crash along the route.

Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost)

A standout mountain biker during his young adulthood in California, 27-year-old Powless transitioned to the road and turned professional in 2018.

Powless made history in 2020 as the first Native American to compete in the Tour de France. Since then, he has continued to improve and is coming off his strongest season yet with overall victories at the 2023 Grand Prix La Marseillaise and Étoile de Bessèges.

In Kuss’ absence, Powless is the top American prospect for pulling off a stage win as he is known for his success with breakaways and aptitude at climbing. Last year, Powless led the King of the Mountain classification for the first half of the Tour but was ultimately edged out by Italy’s Giulio Ciccone. This year, he’ll be looking to finally secure the polka-dotted jersey by the end of the Grand Boucle .

Hailing from Los Angeles, Quinn is a 24-year-old, up-and-coming cyclist riding in his first Tour de France to support Richard Carapaz, team leader of EF Education-EasyPost. Hot off a victory at the U.S. National Road Race Championships in May, Quinn is a strong all-around rider who excels at climbing and can produce strong sprinting kicks. Quinn will certainly be one to watch as he develops in the coming years.

'I want to win but not at costs to another rider’s safety' - Philipsen apologises to Van Aert after Tour de France relegation

'I would never consciously ride in such a way that it endangered another rider' says Belgian on Instagram

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) has apologised to Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) after deviating in his sprint on stage 6 of the Tour de France , forcing his Belgian compatriot to brake in the final sprint to Dijon to avoid going into the barriers.

The defending green jersey winner at the Tour was relegated for his action in the flat finish after crossing the line in second behind Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla) . His initial assessment was anger at himself for losing the stage, before finding out he had been relegated to 107th, fined 500CHF and lost more green jersey points.

Despite team manager Christoph Roodhooft saying, "I didn't think it was a manoeuvre that 100% justifies the declassification” after the stage, Philipsen this morning was at peace with the decision of the jury and responded to the incident on his Instagram.

“Of course, I’m disappointed to be relegated yesterday after a very hectic sprint I want to apologise to Wout van Aert. I was in no way trying to box him in or force him into the barriers on purpose,” said Philipsen.

“Like every sprinter, I’m super competitive and want to win every sprint stage but not at all costs to another rider’s safety.”

Van Aert responded angrily to Sporza after the stage , with the incident reminding him of a similar action taken by Philipsen on the opening sprint stage of the 2023 race. On that occasion in Bayonne, Philipsen wasn’t relegated, leading Van Aert to plead for a change in decision-making before the relegation was confirmed yesterday.

“I was once again boxed in by Jasper Philipsen in the sprint, everyone saw that. That is a bad habit of his,” said Van Aert.

"I'm especially glad that I stayed upright. But if there's no sanction, that would make me angry. They shouldn't throw him out of the Tour, but he should be declassified.

“If they don't punish that severely, everyone thinks that anything goes. It's an increasingly big problem."

Philipsen, who alongside his Alpecin-Deceuninck lead-out train, has built up a reputation as an aggressive sprinter, mainly thanks to Netflix’s Tour de France: Unchained, was quick to state that while contact will happen in Tour de France sprints, it would never be a conscious move that endangered another sprinter.

“What we do as sprinters is already the “highest stakes poker” you can play as a cyclist but I would never consciously ride in such a way that it endangered another rider,” he said.

“I can’t say there won’t be some contact because that is all part of sprinting at the highest level. And there is no higher level than at the Tour de France.”

Van Aert later commented on Philipsen's post, simply stating "Apology accepted".

Philipsen is zero from three in Tour de France sprints in 2024, failing to live up to his four victories and green jersey from the 2023 race. With this drama with Van Aert closed, his next chance to sprint will come on the uphill drag to the line in Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises on stage 8.

“Once again, a big thank you to the team, not only for supporting me during the race but also afterwards. Tomorrow we go again,” said Philipsen. “I’ll keep trying to win as fast and fairly as I can.”
