Afterwards, you will visit the famous Roman Baths, home to Britain’s only natural thermal hot springs. The Roman Baths themselves are below the modern street level. Itinerary so far...

This popular tour combines the Neolithic monument of Stonehenge with ancient Bath , taking in the Roman Baths and the fabulous Georgian architecture of the Royal Crescent. Lots of beautiful countryside on the way too.

Marker pillars rising from the ground.

Before the main event we'll take you to see Woodhenge where you'll see pillars marking the positions of Neolithic wooden posts which have long since rotted away. It's an important World Heritage Site and consists of six concentric ovals of standing posts, surrounded by a bank and ditch.

Close up of a trilithon.

Stonehenge began as a burial area over 4500 years ago and has changed many times during this period, with stones being added and the site being reformed several times. Part of the changes made to the site were the addition of the bluestones. These stones which were mined in Wales and were dragged to Stonehenge using the limited technologies of the era. This would have taken a large number of people and tremendous organisation.

On site is the fabulous Stonehenge Visitor Centre where you can further explore the mysteries of the ancient stones. Here you'll enjoy world-class exhibitions and multi-media displays. Outside there are reconstructed Neolithic houses—where if you're lucky—you might see ancient crafting demonstrations and bread-making using prehistoric techniques.

Interior with arches and pews.

Then we take you through the beautiful English countryside to the Roman city of Bath. See the stunning remains of the Roman Baths (where you'll enjoy a self-guided tour), the Medieval Abbey and the Georgian architecture of the Royal Crescent and the Circus. For Jane Austen fans, our tour can show you 'Jane Austen's Bath'. Sample local delicacies such as the 'Sally Lunn' Bun, take afternoon tea or visit one of the many traditional pubs.

Our experienced tour guides will help you make the most of your tour to Stonehenge and Bath. Travel in chauffeur-driven comfort through the beautiful countryside of Wiltshire and Somerset. We can pick you up from your hotel, the airport or port.

  • Pick-up at 8.30am
  • Stonehenge Visitor Centre
  • Roman Baths
  • Lunch at Sally Lunn’s Historic Eating House & Museum or choice of other Bath eateries
  • Royal Crescent & Circus Georgian architecture
  • Drop-off back to London at 6.30pm

Ancient Stonehenge & Roman City of Bath Itinerary

In the morning your driver-guide will collect you from your London accommodation.

During the scenic drive, they can share their insight and knowledge of the ancient wonders you will visit on the tour, and discuss the fascinating history, myths, and legends that surround them.

Stonehenge Exhibition Center & Museum

To contextualize, familiarize, and acquaint yourself with the significance, mythology, and folklore surrounding the prehistoric standing stones before you actually step out among them, your first stop will be at the nearby visitors center and museum.

The audio-visual exhibitions are fun and entertaining for all ages and discuss some of the key mysteries of Stonehenge such as how the formation was constructed, how the stones themselves were transported here, and ultimately theories on the significance of Stonehenge back in the neolithic period.

Private Tour Amongst the Standing Stones of Stonehenge

Stonehenge standing stone circle

Walking into the stone circle at Stonehenge with your private guide is like traveling 5000 years in the past to the times of ancient pagans paying homage at the temple.

Stonehenge is uniquely rich in mythos and fables. From a scientific standpoint, it is a key site to understanding prehistory and the study of ancient archeology, while some claim it has a spiritual pull that connects them to ancestral spirits and beyond. A private tour provides both the insight and the space to forge your own particular bond with the site.

Tour of the City of Bath

skyline of city of Bath and Roman style architecture.

Outside of the Roman heritage on display in Bath, the surrounding city is famous for its abundant 18th-century ornate Georgian architecture that will make you feel like you have walked onto the set of a period drama like Bridgerton or out of the pages of a Jane Austin novel.

Along with your private driver-guide, you will visit:

  • Bath Abbey,
  • The Royal Crescent
  • The Circus
  • Monuments to many great writers and authors including Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, & Charles Dickens

Private Tour of The Roman Baths

the main bath with people on tour along the side at Roman Baths, in Bath, England,

The highlight of our tour of ancient Bath is found in the center of the city at the remarkably well-preserved remains of one of the greatest historic spas to be found outside of Rome.

With a history dating back to 60-70AD, the Romans gradually added to the site over the following 300 years to craft a truly incredible temple and bathing structure, cunningly constructed in the only hot spring found in the entire UK.

On your private tour, you will discover the water’s source and walk in the shoes of the ancient Romans as you are guided around the ancient stone pavements and preserved (and still flowing) baths themselves.

Your private tour guide will take you to explore the four main sections of the baths: the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman bathhouse and finds from Roman Bath.

Lovely day trip

We were very pleased that we had booked this tour. Having a driver take us out to Stonehenge and the little city of Bath was a life-saver....certainly a stress-saver! Driving through the countryside was also very pleasant and enjoyable. We loved our driver, Jon, who was a kick. Both Bath and Stonehenge are worth seeing. If you are intending to visit these places, we suggest you take this tour to do so. You won't be disappointed.

Can certainly recommend this tour

We are so glad we booked this escorted visit when we went to see Stonehenge. We hadn't planned to see Bath but were so happy that this was included as it's a very interesting and charming place to see. We received vip treatment, our driver was a wonderful guide and very friendly. It was a perfect experience in every way.

Great day trip outside of London

Wonderful experience!! Mysterious Stonehenge and quaint Bath in a one day experience. Glad we had a private driver so that the day could be fun and relaxed.

Visits to Stonehenge and Bath

This was a lovely way to spend the day. We were very comfortably chauffeured out to Stonehenge and then to the town of Bath. Our driver was very helpful and informative and made sure that we saw all that we were supposed to...with hints as to where to experience special out-of-the-ordinary places as well. Stonehenge merits a visit, of course, as it is quite curious but also extremely interesting. We might not have known to go to Bath if it weren't for this tour and we were certainly happy that we had this extra special opportunity. All in all, a really wonderful day!

Day trip outside of London

We knew we wanted to make sure to see Stonehenge when we were in England and this day trip tour offered by LivTours answered our needs. Plus, it gave us a chance to visit Bath which is a very quaint town. So 2 very different experiences in one day trip. We were chauffeured in a very comfortable Mercedes van with a charming (and colorful) driver who filled us in on what we were going to see and gave us tips on the best places for photos and the like. Both of us thought this tour was very well organized and the people we met (or spoke with on the phone) were accommodating and extremely friendly.

Stonehenge Visitor Centre & Museum

Before your guide actually takes you out amongst the prehistoric stones, we will  learn some more about the theories and legends behind how the mystical stone structure was constructed , how the stones were transported here, and what purpose it served all those millennia ago.

The visitors center features excellent audiovisual presentations that are informative and fun for all the family.

Bath Pulteney Bridge on private tour with Stonehenge from London

This is a great day out combining two of the most popular attractions outside of London perhaps with some of the best of the English Countryside and villages.

As with all our example custom tours, this is just an idea to build upon. The great thing about a custom tour is that you choose when you want to go and how long you spend at each destination.

This particular tour has great scope for flexibility in terms of departure time, especially in the summer months.

The classic schedule for this tour is a departure around 8am, visiting Stonehenge, then a countryside tour through to Bath before returning to London. The timings work very well for this.

It is also possible to work in a very late morning departure, returning to London in the evening.

Stonehenge exhibition area

It will be around 105 minutes after leaving London travelling non-stop when we get to Stonehenge.

On the way you will have got to know the driver/guide, who will have given you a thorough briefing on things Neolithic. Equipped with this information you should be able to get maximum enjoyment from your visit to Stonehenge.

Most people take around 90-120 minutes at Stonehenge, its a good place to grab a coffee before boarding the bus.

Important! Since 2014 you need to purchase your tickets to Stonehenge in advance, stipulating a 30 minute time slot you will arrive at.

Stonehenge - find out more

Stonehenge to Bath perhaps via Lacock

Lacock village typical street scene

Spectacular countryside journey

After leaving Stonehenge its about an hour's drive direct to Bath or you can perhaps see some of the best English countryside and have lunch at Lacock in a 14th Century pub with good food options.

On the countryside route you'll view thatched cottages, Norman churches, traditional black and white wooden fronted medieval houses line the road.

We venture down single track roads for some of the journey so you really are off the tourist track in the middle of the countryside.

National Trust Village of Lacock

Lacock is an old wool town where all the buildings in the village are more than 200 years old, much of it much older. It is not a museum piece, but a living working village with school, post office, church, tithe barn, bakery and several pubs.

Lacock village is owned by the National Trust, all the occupants including the pubs rent from the National Trust.

The National Trust controls strictly the village environment, apart from vehicles it could be back a few hundred years ago, no street lights, no aerials, only approved 'authentic' colour schemes.

With this olde worlde feel, Jane Austen and some Harry Potter films are just examples of films shot here.

Lunch at 14th century pub - The George Inn

We heartily recommend you take lunch in the George Inn, a 14th century pub, the oldest licensed pub in England.

It is refreshingly free of the tourist trail, many of the customers will be locals. Apart from the excellent home cooked food chalked up on the boards at reasonable prices, the pub itself has much of interest.

Lacock - find out more

Roman Baths, Bath

It is only a 30 minute journey from Lacock to Bath, where there is plenty to see and do.

Bath itself is very compact, nearly everything you want to see is within 10 minutes' walk of each other. We will drop you off by the Roman Baths, right in the centre at the official coach drop off point.

Bath's attractions are crudely split between the Roman Baths from 2,000 years ago and the Georgian period in the 18th century where much of what you see now was built.

The Roman Baths normally take around an hour for visitors. An audio guide is part of the admission fee. The Pump Room, part of the Roman Baths complex is 'the' place to take classic English afternoon tea.

Driver & guiding options

Everybody's requirements are different! - You may just need a professional driver to transport your group to where you want to go or you may need a level of guiding and commentary.

Driver only - If you prefer an experienced driver who is familiar with our touring routes but does not offer tour guiding, please select “Driver only” as your tariff.

Driver/guide - If you would like an experienced driver who can also guide from the vehicle, please select “Driver/guide” as your tariff.

Driver with additional guide - For larger groups a separate guide may be appropriate. Particularly at some of the large cities and towns where parking is a problem in the centre.

Touring coaches for large groups - Full size coaches that can accommodate the largest groups in comfort are also available with guides. By their nature these tours are very different from each other so just outline your requirements on the enquiry form at the bottom of the page to start a dialogue.

A day tour is a tour of around 9-10 hours at a time of your choosing. Drivers have very strict legal limits on the time they are allowed to drive each day and there are rules also on the frequency of driver breaks too. These are not normally an issue, but if they are the matter will be raised at the quotation stage.

Prices includes all fees except for food/drink and admissions to attractions which can be quoted for separately.

PRIVATE CAR DAY TOUR PRICES

(rates do not include attraction admissions or food), full size touring coaches for large groups.

Cruise shuttle bus from London

If you have a large group then that is not a problem either.

The largest coaches are 50-72 seat coaches but we also have access to vehicles half that size.

With large groups on cruise tour transfers the capacity issue is not normally passenger numbers but luggage.

UK coaches are built to European traveller requirements, where one large case is perfectly adequate. A typical 50 seat coach will be able to accommodate around 60 large cases in the luggage hold.

For a group travelling with North American flight allowances a 50 seat coach will typically only be able to accommodate the luggage of 35 such passengers maximum.

With large groups just as small groups multi- drop and pick-ups from hotels is routine and if required we can arrange a guide.

Tour planning & formal quotations

Some people have a tight specification of exactly what they want, others just have a broad idea of what they like and want to see and let us plan something that meets that need. We are comfortable with either type of request.

Tours are customised for each individual group. Go where you want to go at a pace you decide. Use the form below to outline your requirements and start a dialogue.

KEY SIGHTS ON THIS TOUR…

For centuries, historians and archaeologists have puzzled over the mystery of Stonehenge. Modern scholars now agree that Stonehenge was once a burial ground but it is still unclear for who or in fact if anyone is buried there at all. Archaeologists believe England’s most iconic ruin was built in several stages, with construction starting some 5,000 years ago. The Neolithic monument took its masons an estimated 1,500 years to bring the 100 massive stones into their instantly recognisable circular layout.

Its construction still baffles experts. The sandstone slabs are likely from local quarries, a hard enough task in a time without the wheel or transportation, but scientists have traced its inner ring bluestones to the Preseli Hills in Wales, over 200 miles from Stonehenge.

Nearly 1 million people visit Stonehenge annually and it has been  a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

Stonehenge Visitor Centre

View over 250 archaeological objects discovered in the local landscape. The exhibits include neolithic jewellery, pottery and tools as well as ancient human remains. Journey through 5000 years in the incredible audio-visual 360 degree cinema, walk amongst a recreation of a Neolithic village and imagine how people lived 4,500 years ago.

Bath Roman Baths

Bath Roman Baths is the remarkably preserved remains of one of the greatest religious spas of the Roman Empire is one of the finest historic sites in Northern Europe. A temple was constructed on the site in the first few decades of Roman Britain. The World Heritage Site consists of the . Designed for public bathing, the city’s unique thermal springs rise in the site and the Baths still flow with natural hot water. They were used until the end of Roman rule in Britain in the 5th c.

The city’s unique thermal springs rise in the site and the it still flows with naturally hot water today. Exploring the baths is somewhat like stepping back in time almost 2 millennia. Walk on original Roman pavements and see the ruins of the Temple of Sulis Minerva.

here is also a museum collection which highlights Roman artefacts that would have been commonplace in the period. The Roman Baths are one of the most visited heritage attractions in the UK, attracting over one million visitors a year.

One of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in England, Bath Abbey can seat up to 1,200 worshipers. Founded in the 7th century, the Abbey we visit today was rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries, restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the mid 18th century.

The architecture is outstanding, with 617 wall memorials and 847 floor stones and 52 stained glass windows occupying about 80 per cent of the wall space (a high percentage for the period) which provides a light and airy interior with a vast arched celling. The eastern window depicts the nativity and the northwest door is a depiction of the Four Evangelists. In 2010 a stained glass window was uncovered in the abbey vaults where there is a heritage museum.

Royal Crescent

Royal Crescent is 500 foot / 150 meter row of terraced houses laid out in a sweeping crescent and is one of Bath’s most photographed features and one of the greatest examples of Georgian architecture in England.  Designed by the architect John Wood, the Younger and completed in 1774, it has been little altered since it was built.

It features ionic architectural features of the period including grand columns with an entablature in a Palladian style. It was the first crescent of terraced houses to be built and an example of “the country in the city” style that affords open views to the parkland opposite. Of the 30 townhouses, 10 are still full houses, the large central house is the Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa and the other 18 have been split into flats and one as been restored to its original interior and is a museum to Georgian life.

Arrive in the unreal location of Stonehedge, where you’ll get to see and learn all about the mysterious stone columns, and burial chambers, and ponder what you believe this enigmatic place is all about.

It’s back on the bus as you head over to the charming counties of Somerset and Wiltshire, then arrive in the cobblestoned, ancient town of Bath. Wander through the ancient streets of this place that oozes with Georgian elegance, with honey-hued buildings, intricate architecture, and pure magic.

You’ll get to follow in the footsteps of Ancient Romans as you take a comprehensive tour of this UNESCO-listed city, and you can also choose to enter the Roman Baths.

We can’t forget the majestic Windsor Castle, which is actually the oldest and biggest continuously occupied castle on the planet!

This real-life monument to centuries of royal power has plenty to see, from the ancient hallways, to the State Apartments, to St. George’s Chapel (where Queen Elizabeth II and other monarchs had their final resting place).

  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
  • Departure Time: Several between 7:00 and 8:30 AM
  • Includes: Private guide, air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, fuel surcharge, parking fees

With a tour that’s as rich as the Sally Lunn Bun and as mysterious as a Hitchcock film, this next one is one of the most fulfilling I’ve experienced. At such intimate places, a large group tour simply doesn’t allow you to see it the way it’s meant to be.

That, along with the incredible knowledge, sights, and organization are just some of the reasons why I love the Stonehenge & Bath Private Day Tour from London !

The day starts out with your expert guide picking you and the rest of your party up at your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle, setting off to Bath first. This city is bursting at the seams with history and elegance, and your guide will take you and the crew down the fairytale-like streets lined with Georgian townhouses.

This personal tour allowed us the opportunity to see things we would’ve missed on a larger tour, with our guide more than happy to answer any questions we had.

For lunch, we discovered that our friendly tour guide actually planned lunch ahead of time for us at a pub offering plenty of traditional dishes and delicious beer on tap!

I’ll say that I was actually surprised England could have such flavorful offerings, so if you’re in Bath you need to make time for this! After fueling up, we were able to see the notorious Roman baths before making our way over to Stonehenge.

This legendary loop of ancient stones emits some kind of inexplicable energy, along with an air of mystique surrounding the place. After all, no one really knows just why it these colossal monoliths were built, though there are theories.

I can’t recommend this tour enough, with the ability to customize it, working with your guide to create the perfect experience for you and your group.

3. Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, and Bath  Day Trip From London

  • Duration: 12 hours
  • Departure: Gate 20, Victoria Coach Station, 164 Buckingham Palace Rd, London
  • Departure Time:  7:45 AM
  • Includes: Luxury air-conditioned coach, professional guide, entry to Windsor Castle (if option selected) Entry to Stonehenge, entry to Roman Baths (if option selected), panoramic coach tour in Bath

England may be a relatively small country in terms of land, but there are so many places to see. It can be a bit difficult to see them all if you’re going it on your own, but with this next tour you’ll see 3 of the UK’s most well-known attractions in just one tour.

The Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, and Bath Day Trip from London Tour  does a great job of avoiding the crowds and showing you hidden gems that most tourists aren’t able to access.

Get moving bright and early in order to meet your guide at Victoria Coach Station, where you’ll head off on an adventure that’ll take you through time, royalty, and ancient mysteries.

The first stop of the day is also the closest to London: Windsor Castle, that’s been around for nearly a whopping millennium! Sitting high above the River Thames, this intimidating structure tells the story of countless monarchs and the wild and crazy events surrounding them.

After learning about this looming castle, and seeing St. George’s Chapel and the luxurious state apartments, you’ll head back to your coach and head over to Bath.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site truly is like stepping into a real-life postcard, where natural beauty and man-made masterpieces meet. While the Roman Baths were certainly a sight to be seen, the Bath Abbey and Pulteney Bridge over the Avon River was simply breathtaking.

After your educational historic tour of Bath, your guide will call for some free time where you’ll have the chance to grab a bite to eat, shop, venture around, or sip on some afternoon tea.

We can’t forget the ominous Stonehenge, which is a monument that takes us back to the literal time of dinosaurs. Sitting out in what’s essentially “the middle of nowhere”, it’s left countless people scratching their heads, wondering what it’s intended for.

4. Stonehenge & Roman Baths  Full-Day Trip From London

  • Departure: Victoria Coach Station, Gate 12 to 20, London
  • Departure Time: 8:15 AM
  • Includes: Stonehenge admission, Roman Baths Museum admission, transport by luxury air-conditioned coach, multi-lingual audio guide of Stonehenge, free time to explore Bath

I’ve had many friends ask for recommendations of what to see when in England, and every single time, I recommend this tour to them. If you have a full day free and you’d like to see something different from London, this is just the ticket.

The Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, and Bath Day Trip from London Tour  gave me a true history lesson on each of these legendary locations, along with plenty of jewels of knowledge the average tourist doesn’t get to learn on larger tours.

Starting off around 8 am, you will meet your guide at Victoria Coach Station which is located conveniently right in the center of London. From here, you’ll board your luxury, air-conditioned coach which comes with plenty of leg room and large windows to watch the English countryside roll on by.

As we chugged along, our guide regaled us with stories about London which made me more excited to explore more of the capital, too. Once we arrived in Bath, I’d practically convinced myself I wanted to move there after witnessing the gorgeous Georgian terraces and incredible detail on every corner.

I’d always wanted to see the Roman Baths, and these 2,000-year-old legends did not disappoint. I was surprised just how close we were able to get to the foggy pools, along with gorgeous Roman statues for added eye candy.

I appreciated how much free time our guide gave us, where we were able to take plenty of photos around the Pulteney Bridge, grab some souvenirs, and enjoy an ultra-British afternoon tea.

Seeing Stonehenge was more impressive than I thought it would be, and we learned how the 5,000 year-old rocks have continued to confuse, enrage, and spark inspiration among countless people.

By the time we got back to the hotel, I was Googling just about everything I could about both of these amazing locations!

5.  Small-Group Day Trip to Bath , Lacock and Stonehenge From London

  • Departure: The Cumberland Hotel, London W1H 7DL
  • Departure Time: 7:30 AM
  • Includes: Travel by executive mini-coach, guided walk in Lacock and Avebury, entry to Stonehenge and Roman Baths

What I love about small group tours, is essentially everything. You don’t have to worry about just being another head in the crowd, nor do you have to deal with the frustration of navigating a large group of people through tiny corridors and streets.

The Small-Group Day Trip to Bath, Lacock and Stonehenge from London Tour instead offers you a personalized experience where you get to call the shots and receive unwavering attention from your expert guide.

This tour starts out the earliest of the bunch, so make sure you arrive first thing in the morning to meet your guide at The Cumberland Hotel in London.

I was very happy with the cleanliness and comfort of our executive mini-coach, and there was more than enough room for everyone in my party. Our guide was super friendly and outgoing, invoking conversation about London’s history and what we’re interested in seeing on this trip.

I thought that seeing the ancient burial chambers and a 4,000-year-old pyramid on Silbury Hill was quite a fitting way to start things out, as well as the various traditional pubs, White Horse hill carvings, and other monuments.

We arrived first at the prehistoric Stonehenge circle of stones, where we were given a fascinating commentary about this 5,000-year-old monolith.

I found it to be very tranquil and relaxing, with the fresh countryside breeze blowing through my hair while we gazed on at this historical wonder.

Next, we continued on to Bath, filled with plenty of vistas and architecture that made me feel like I was some kind of royal! You’ve likely seen many of the streets in famous movies such as the Harry Potter Series, Pride and Prejudice, and plenty of TV series.

Even if you’re not particularly interested in the Roman Baths, I highly suggest taking this part of the tour as it’ll give you a completely different view of the country and its culture.

Take some time soaking in the old-world charm of Lacock village, which feels like it’s been frozen in time. Then, enjoy the village of Avebury which made me feel like I’d somehow stepped inside a painting filled with thatched cottages and beautiful flowers.

By the 18th century, it had transformed into an opulent and relaxing spa destination for England’s elite. Enjoy a visual tour of the city’s elegant architecture from the comfort of your coach. This towering residence has served as one of the official homes of the monarchy for over 1,000 years. Your ticket includes access to the state apartments, reception rooms, and the Royal Chapel of St George, the final resting place of many famous English monarchs.

On Tuesday & Wednesday, Windsor Castle does not open. On these days we will still visit Windsor Town but entry to the Castle will not be possible. We will include entry to the Roman Baths instead, and then when in Windsor your guide will conduct a walking tour of this beautiful, historic town which will include photo opportunities of the Castle. A Cotswolds Village, Bath and Stonehenge

Stonehenge tour, the world famous ancient stone circle. this 5000 year old site is a "must see" and arguably one of the world's most important prehistoric sites, certainly one of britain's most popular attractions..

Join our small group Stonehenge tour from London in 2024 to discover this mysterious prehistoric stone circle, standing proud on Salisbury Plain. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stonehenge is the most architecturally sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the world, whose "how's", "what's" and "why's" are still being explored today. Stonehenge has been held sacred for centuries, as a place of spiritual importance for Pagans and Druids, who still celebrate it today. But what was it built for, and how? Come and share your theories, and learn what we already know from decades of research into who carried these stones as far as 150 miles, weighing up to 30 tons, and aligned them with perfect precision with the rising and setting sun of the summer and winter solstices. It's a remarkable feat of ancient engineering, and has to be seen to be believed!

England's most beautiful city? With stunning Georgian architecture and a history stretching back 3000 years, it's clear to see why Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage City, well worth a visit on any trip to England.

We will see the best of Bath. Bath's finest streets - including the famous Royal Crescent - resplendent in their glorious Georgian style, before you have the chance to explore the centre on foot (armed with a map and some recommendations from your guide). Visit Bath Abbey with its impressive vaulted ceiling, or explore the Roman Baths museum (entry optional), stroll along the beautiful River Avon with view of the majestic Pulteney Bridge or just soak in the atmosphere of one of England's most sophisticated cities. Join us on a walking tour to learn more about the history and culture of Bath, and perhaps have a taste of the spring water. Appreciate the city that inspired Jane Austen & Dickens and see why Bath has been one of the most popular destinations for the upper classes for hundreds of years.

Castle Combe - charming Cotswolds village

One of the cotswolds' most beautiful villages is castle combe. situated on the southern edge of the cotswolds just 12 miles from bath, castle combe has many times been rated the "prettiest village in england"..

Dating back to the 13th century and once a weaving town, the village sits in the lush green valley of the River Bybrook. Only accessible on some of the local backroads, no big bus tours of the Cotswolds from London can visit so we will certainly be avoiding the crowds. Lined with characterful old houses and cottages built in the rich brown local Cotswolds stone, enjoy the peace and tranquillity and opportunity to take some beautiful photographs depicting typical Cotswolds life. Wander down the quiet main street, take a look inside the 13th century St Andrew's Church, perhaps buy some of the homemade cakes and sweets locals sell from outside their homes, Castle Combe is a must visit on any tour of the southern Cotswolds from London.

** Please note that due to reduced daylight hours this tour only operates April - October. Our best selling signature tour - Stonehenge, Bath & a Secret Place runs all year round to almost the same itinerary. See https://theenglishbus.com/tour/bath-stonehenge-and-a-secret-place **

Our first pick up is on the corner of Belvedere Road and Chicheley Street, SE1 7PB. This is the bus pick up and drop off point for the London Eye (see departure point page here) This is in the Waterloo area and a short walk from both Waterloo and Westminster Stations. Your bus and guide will normally arrive 5-10 minutes before departure. Look out for a small white Mercedes Benz bus with “The English Bus” written on the side. A prompt departure is essential so please arrive in plenty of time.

Outside the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel London Victoria, at 2 Bridge Place, SW1V 1QA (see departure point page here) This is a very short walk from Victoria Station. Take exit 1 from the main railway station and turn right. Please be waiting outside the hotel, we will stop to pick you up as close to the hotel entrance as we can.

After we have picked everyone up, and you are sat comfortably, your driver/guide will introduce themselves, and explain the plan for your day. Your guide will provide full commentary on our interesting route out of London, passing some major landmarks on our way. We will make a quick bathroom/coffee/snack stop on request - you are more than welcome to eat and drink on the bus as we travel

Our first stop is the magnificent prehistoric site of Stonehenge. Dating back over 5000 years, this is likely to be the oldest man made site that you will ever visit in your lifetime.

Before your arrival, your guide will discuss some of the facts & theories surrounding this world famous mysterious stone circle in preparation for our arrival, so you have a good understanding of what you’re seeing.

There’ll be plenty of time to take some wonderful pictures, listen to the audio-guide and visit the gift shop, cafe and the new visitor centre. Your guide will be very interested to hear your thoughts, will answer questions about Stonehenge and tell you some of the more weird and wonderful stories you wouldn't otherwise have heard.

Following your visit to Stonehenge, we'll begin making our way through the countryside to the UNESCO world heritage city of Bath. We’ll drive through some quintessential English villages and take back roads to give you a taste of real rural England. You will get some fantastic views of the countryside. Your guide will point out traditional English houses and talk about English country life.

On arrival we’ll drop you off in Bath city centre with some recommendations of places to eat and drink and sights to see. Perhaps you might choose a typical English pub or cafe, or a quick and tasty pasty - a special type of local pie, perhaps washed down with a glass of famous local cider? Your guide will be on hand to advise what might be best for you. We'll also provide a handy map of Bath for you too.

After lunch your guide will offer you an optional guided walking tour of Bath, focusing on the history and highlights of the city, and the different incarnations of the baths through the ages - from the Celts, the Romans, the Georgians to the present day. You’ll have plenty of free time to explore the city that inspired Charles Dickens and Jane Austen at your leisure before a panoramic driving tour on our route out to show you Bath’s finest streets including the best of all - The Royal Crescent.

Leaving the beautiful city of Bath behind, we'll head north east through the rolling hills of Somerset. Passing through some more quintessential English villages and into the southern Cotswolds - probably England's best known area of countryside we'll arrive in Castle Combe - around 35 minutes after leaving the city of Bath.

** Please note that we may operate this tour in reverse and visit Castle Combe at the start of the day, after our visits to Stonehenge and Bath - this is dependant on traffic and Stonehenge operating hours. Either way we will still spend the same amount of time in the Cotswolds**

Meandering along some scenic tree and hedgerow lined back routes beyond Bath, we arrive in the stunning village of Castle Combe. Before our arrival, your guide will tell you all about the village and what there is to see and do, before we drop of off to explore on foot. Wander down the charming main street admiring the Cotswolds beauty, perhaps stop for a cup of tea and a scone, or a drink in one of the historic pubs. Visit Castle Combe's 13th century church and get some beautiful pictures of one of England's most beautiful villages.

Dependent on traffic, we’ll get back to London between approximately 8.00pm - 8.30pm. Your guide will plan the route into London based on where you all want to go, and will endeavour to get you as close as possible to your destination. If there is a more convenient point to depart the tour along our route through London then we can certainly make a stop for you. We will also always return to the areas you started the tour, if this is your best option. Speak with your guide so they can make sure you know exactly how to get to where you need to get to - they can advise where the best place to depart the tour would be.

We may alter the order of the day depending on traffic/weather/special events in order to maximise your enjoyment of the day. Due to shorter daylight hours in the Winter, this tour runs mid March - late October. Our Bath, Stonehenge and a Secret Place tour is available all year round however, and is not affected by the shorter daylight hours. See HERE for details.

How to Plan a Day Trip to Stonehenge and Oxford from London

I f you are spending a week in London , you will have time to take at least one or more day trips to see more of England. There are many destination options such as Bath , the Cotswolds , Stonehenge, and Oxford. Some are easily accessible by train, such as Bath or Oxford, but to combine destinations, you can either rent a car, take a coach bus tour, or hire a private driver guide.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to take a day trip to Stonehenge and Oxford from London, and what to do while you are there.

Since we had our hearts set on seeing both Stonehenge and Oxford on our day trip, a bus trip was out of the question. Not that I would recommend a bus trip with a family anyway, but they are cost-effective. Unfortunately all the bus trips usually add in another spot like Windsor Castle — nothing was exactly what we wanted.

Also, after driving on the left in Ireland , I wasn’t excited about the prospect of driving through the English countryside on this trip. And there was no way I wanted to attempt to drive within London.

I scoured the Internet for hours looking for an option until we eventually decided it would be worth it to book a private tour to provide us with exactly the trip we were looking for. I wanted to make sure we included a Harry Potter tour on our Oxford day trip, since we were planning the ultimate London trip for Harry Potter fans .

But I also wanted someone that could explain Stonehenge’s rich history to us, versus just exploring the world’s most famous stone circle on our own. I found just what I was looking for with British Tours .

Day Trip to Stonehenge Tour

Located about 1.5 hours from London, a Stonehenge day trip is one of the most popular for families. There is just something about those mysterious prehistoric stones that fascinates kids and adults alike — especially families like ours that have a special interest in sci-fi and fantasy. After all, isn’t it fun to imagine that those stones were placed there by aliens? (But don’t worry, they weren’t.)

If you are visiting Stonehenge on your own, you will want to spend some time in the visitor center to understand its history. You will park at the visitor center up the road and then take a shuttle over to the stone circle. You can no longer walk right up and touch the stones, as barriers have been erected to preserve this historical site.

Our driver-guide Michael from British Tours filled us in on the history of Stonehenge on the ride up from London. We don’t really know the purpose of the stones, since they are 5100 years old (built around the same time as the pyramids) and pre-date written history.

We don’t know what is special about the area, but we have to assume that the whole area was considered sacred as there is also another mini Stonehenge nearby. The smaller stones are 5,000 lbs. and they came from Wales 125 miles away. It is mind-boggling to consider how the ancient Druids crafted and moved these stones when the wheel hadn’t even been invented yet and there was no metal yet to use to shape the stones. The larger stones came from only 25 miles away but they are tens of thousands of pounds!

They even rounded the stones slightly to make them fit the circular shape of Stonehenge (henge meaning circle.) In the middle is what they call the Slaughter Stone. There is no real evidence of ritual sacrifice at Stonehenge but it does make for a good story. You see, when it rains, the stone looks reddish. But it isn’t blood, just iron in the stone that causes the coloration.

Our Stonehenge private tour just happened to fall on one of the most popular days to visit — the Winter Solstice. The longest and shortest days of the year are popular to visit and if you get there early on the longest day of the year, you can see the sun rise above the Heel Stone (a stone that actually predates Stonehenge that the Druids may have thought was put their by the Gods.) Even though there were plenty of pagans and other visitors camping out to see the sunrise and sunset over the stones, overall it really wasn’t very crowded for our Stonehenge tour.

Day Trip to Oxford Tour

Oxford is another great London day trip pick for families. There is enough to see that you could spend a weekend in Oxford . This university town is both quaint and rich in history. In warmer weather, families can enjoy taking a punting boat out on the river.

But one of the main draws for us (and other families) is that it was the filming site for many scenes in the Harry Potter movies. If you visit on your own, you can join a Harry Potter walking tour. But since I told British Tours that this was important to us, our driver guide Michael was able to focus much of our visit on seeing these sites.

Oxford used to be called Oxenford (where oxen crossed or forded the Thames to be brought to market), but it became a place for study after students were thrown out of the Sorbonne in France because of a war in the 1200s. They came to Oxford to study and it grew until it was granted status as a University. Today, the University of Oxford has 38 individual colleges.

There is so much to see in Oxford you can really spend at least a full day but our Oxford tour started off at New College, where Michael pointed out the Cloisters, which were used for many hallway scenes in the Harry Potter movies. You can also see the tree where Draco Malfoy was turned into a ferret.

After lunch at the Turf Tavern, which has fed any number of famous people from Bill Clinton in the 1960s to Elizabeth Taylor, Ben Kingsley, and the cast and crew of the Harry Potter movies,  we moved on to Christchurch College.

The Great Hall at Christchurch College was where they filmed scenes for the dining hall at Hogwarts. And the staircase was where McGonagall greeted all the first year students in the first movie. Something about it just makes you want to put on a robe, head into the library and start studying (magic or something else!)

Oxford is such a wonderful place to visit for those with a literary bent. Famous authors like C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, Lewis Carroll and others have spent time in Oxford and it is fun to follow in their footsteps.

Visiting both places was a full day, departing at 8am and returning to our central London hotel by 6pm. In the summer, it would be light longer and attractions would stay open later. If that was the case, we would have included a stop in the village of Lacock in the Cotswolds, another Harry Potter filming site.

This day tour with British Tours was exactly what we had hoped for with a warm and informative guide that was as comfortable explaining ancient history as describing filming sites for Harry Potter movies. Michael was able to connect with our teen and she was so enchanted with Oxford, that she wanted to apply to go to college in Oxford. We would definitely recommend working with British Tours for a group trip or, even better, hiring a private driver guide for your own custom trip from London.

British Tours offers all types of day tours from London including private and group tours to Windsor Castle, Bath, Stratford Upon Avon, Blenheim Castle, and Highclere Castle (the real Downton Abbey.) SaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSaveSave SaveSave
