Mae sure to include these amazing restaurants in your Dubai itinerary.

GETTING AROUND DUBAI

Getting around Dubai is easy thanks to the Dubai Metro, which connects all the major hubs. However, not all places are near metro stations, so you will need to take a cab. Depending on your travel needs, you can recharge and use Metro Nol Cards. You can use these cards on public buses and water taxis as well. To travel by road, taxis are affordable, but it’s best to arrange transfers with tours in advance.

HELPFUL TIPS

  • Visit Dubai between October and March, as these are cooler months. April to July are low season and quite uncomfortable to visit as the desert heat is quite stifling.
  • Respect local laws and cultures. Be sure not to indulge in PDA, click pictures of locals without their permission, or do anything that may offend them. In Dubai, the laws are stringent. If you break them, you may face heavy fines or even deportation.
  • Consider adding Dubai Global Village, Dubai Miracle Garden, the Dubai Food Festival, and the Dubai Shopping Festival to your Dubai itinerary if you plan your holiday when they are operating.

Do let us know, if this 4-day Dubai itinerary helped you in planning that perfect trip. Also, do mention in the comments what is your favourite spot in the whole of Dubai!?

Dubai travel guide for indian travelers.

Due to friendly relations, Dubai is progressively gaining more and more Indian tourists. In fact, it is the fourth most visited place among Indian tourists. Indian travelers, business persons, and job seekers all visit the city. Renowned for its high-rising architectural miracles and a superb variety of resorts, it is a place that was once a gigantic desert. However, because of the vision & diligence of Sheikh Maktoum, it has evolved into the most developing destination. Here is the perfect Dubai Travel Guide for Indians.

Table of Contents

It is usually referred to as a zero-crime rate city. Fastest-growing tourism destination, city of tall buildings, city of gold, and the new land of the rising sun, etc.

Dubai Travel Guide: 5 things to know

Although a massive part of the city’s population is Indian, when traveling to Dubai from India, you should know about some of its rules. Here are five things to know when you’re heading there.

  • Even though Dubai has zero tolerance for drugs, its policy isn’t just stringent against prescribed drugs. However, the government has specific rules with regard to prescription drugs as well. In case you bring in any medicine without a prescription that doesn’t meet Dubai customs guidelines, you could find yourself in trouble.
  • When compared to other Middle East countries, UAE is a lot more easygoing for non-Muslim tourists. Yet, religious customs are still regarded as imperative. Given that, a public display of affection (PDA) could get you imprisoned. If you’re a woman, when going out, dress modestly, with nothing too tight, too short, or see-through. Men should keep their chests undercover with a shirt when they are not around beaches or pools etc
  • The city has plenty of spots where you can take perfect pictures with great views. Having said that, bear in mind, that it is offensive to take pictures of native Arab citizens and certain buildings in Dubai. In fact, most people would consider it rude to have their photographs taken without their approval. So it’s advisable to ask them first.
  • It has a dry climate all around the year. However, the winter season between October to April is a perfect time to travel to Dubai from India. It’s the time when certain Indian cities experience cold climates. During these months, here, you can spend time outside without sweating your face off.
  • Swearing, cursing, fighting, or making impolite signs in public places can get you imprisoned. In recent years, we have been observing such incidents where people are getting charged with giving the middle finger during a heated disagreement.

The best time to visit is early morning or evening. A slot between 3:00 to 6:30 pm for sunset views. The ticket cost varies between 159 AED to 389 AED.

The Dubai Mall

The biggest Gold market on the planet, Gold Souq is another must-visit place. Even if you are not buying anything there. Located in Deira, Gold Souq features over 380 retailers, the majority of whom are jewelry traders. With over 350 jewelry retailers trade at least 10 tons of gold daily. The purest form of gold is 24-K and it is delicate and breaks if a human touches it. The gold price in Dubai is significantly less than in India. If Gold appeals to you, plan to purchase.

Dubai is a really magical place to visit. The city's skyscrapers will make you stare at the buildings in awe. Not just the buildings, each and every thing there is something out of the ordinary. The buildings are so tall that you can walk in between them without the hot sun scorching you in some places. Almost each and every building glitters in the night time giving a mesmerising look.

BEST TIME TO VISIT DUBAI

The best time to visit Dubai is between November to February when the temperature is quite pleasant. During this time, it is possible to walk in the day time without much discomfort. Even then, almost everything is air conditioned and hence you can easily skip walking outside air conditioning. The tourist season normally begins during this time and so be sure to book your hotels and flights early.

HOW MANY DAYS SHOULD YOU STAY?

Coming on to how many days is sufficient for a visit here, I will say that even a month of travel is not enough !! You heard me right !! Still, that's just not possible and feasible, so I will recommend to stay here a bare minimum of 7 days. Even 5 days will do but you will have to hurry up to watch everything. I stayed in Dubai for 10 days and felt quite sad while returning back because I had not watched everything !!

The currency in use in the UAE Dirham (also called the AED). 1 AED is approximately INR 20 or so at present rates (December 2019). You can take US Dollars, Euro, Pound and even Indian Rupee to exchange for AED while in the UAE. There are many currency exchanges available in malls as well as other places. It is always advisable to take a major currency while travelling abroad. I always take US Dollars because any leftover currency can be used for my next trip. If you want to buy UAE Dirham or any other currency, then I will highly recomment BOOKMYFOREX.COM because they provide currency and forex cards at great prices. You will get currency notes and forex cards delivered straight to your home by just uploading a few basic things to the website. Click here to visit bookmyforex.com

Visa at present is E-Visa for Indians and it is very easy to get one. Normally, you can hope to get the UAE Visa in around 3-5 days. There are both single entry and multiple entry visa and you can apply for one depending on your requirements.

ACCOMMODATION

Hotels are quite expensive in UAE. Thus, I will suggest you to stay in AirBnB which is quite cheaper compared to hotels. Plus, most AirBnB's are situated at excellent locations with great views.

Taxi services are also available for tourists’ convenience. You can book taxis from Uber or Careem, and they are available from anywhere in the city. To ensure transport convenience, you can download a licensed operator smartphone app, such as Careem, Skurtt, Tier, Lime, and more, from Google Play Store or the Apple Store.

How to Get Dubai Tourist Permit for Indian Travelers

Dubai Visa

Dubai offers different types of visas based on the duration of your stay, ranging from 14 to 90 days. Whether you’re planning a short visit or a longer stay, you can apply for a visa that suits your needs. If you wish to extend your stay, you can do so from within Dubai, but this does not apply to transit visas. Make sure to check the latest visa regulations and requirements before your trip to ensure a smooth entry into Dubai.

If you are not eligible for a visa on arrival or visa free entry to Dubai then don’t worry you can still travel to Dubai. You need to get a tourist permit which you can get from airlines, hotels and travel agents.

If you are not eligible for a visa on arrival or visa-free entry to Dubai, there is no need to worry as you can still travel to Dubai with a tourist permit. This can be obtained through airlines, hotels, or travel agents. However, certain eligibility criteria need to be met to obtain a tourist permit from Dubai travel.

Who is Eligible for a 14-day UAE Visa on Arrival?

Presently, only individuals of Indian nationality have the privilege to obtain a 14-day UAE Visa on Arrival, granted they have a valid US visa, US green card or a residence permit from the UK or any EU country. While the Visa on Arrival fee is currently 100 AED, it is essential to note that it is subject to change. Furthermore, this visa can be extended once for another 14 days for an additional fee of 250 AED.

Indian nationals can use specific visas to secure a UAE or Dubai Visa on Arrival at international airports and seaports in the UAE. However, depending on the airport, the Visa on Arrival fee may vary from 105 to 140 AED.

The UAE or Dubai Visa on Arrival permits a stay of 14 days and is single-entry only. Should you exit the UAE and decide to return, you will need to acquire a new Visa on Arrival.

Suppose you desire to extend your stay in the UAE beyond 14 days. In that case, you can do so by extending the UAE or Dubai Visa on Arrival once for an additional 14-days, which can be processed at any AMER center in the UAE. However, this service comes at an added cost of 250 AED plus VAT and service charges.

You must have the following:

  • A bank balance of at least 4000 USD or its equivalent currencies for the past six months.
  • A valid Indian passport, which should be valid for at least six months from the day of departure.
  • Confirmed return tickets.
  • Completed payment processes.
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation).

Exploring Dubai on a Budget: Cost-Saving Tips for a Memorable Tour from India

Dubai is a dream destination for many travelers, and with careful planning, a trip to this city can be done on a limited budget. If you’re looking to travel from India to Dubai, there are several things you can do to keep your costs low.

Firstly, consider avoiding the incredibly opulent hotels in Dubai and instead opt for more affordable accommodations. By doing so, you can significantly reduce your expenses while still enjoying your stay in this magnificent city.

Another way to save money is to book your flights well in advance. This way, you can take advantage of lower airfares and avoid last-minute price hikes.

It’s also important to note that Dubai uses the United Arab Emirates Dirham as its currency. Currently, 1 INR will cost you 0.045 AED, and 1 AED will cost you 22.26 INR. While meal costs can vary in Dubai, a day’s worth of food there costs an average of AED170.

*Please note that currency exchange rates are subject to fluctuations and may vary over time.

If you’re wondering how much you should budget for your Dubai holiday, the average daily price based on the expenses of other travelers is around AED770 (approximately Rs. 17,000) per day. Keeping this in mind while planning your trip can help you stay within your budget.

Before planning a trip to Dubai from India, it is important to consider the weather and climatic conditions to ensure a fun-filled holiday. The ideal time to plan a trip to Dubai is between November and February when the weather is extremely pleasant, making sightseeing and outdoor activities enjoyable. Although the cost of accommodation may be high during this period, it is the best time to travel to Dubai.

However, traveling to Dubai can be a costly affair due to the plethora of tourist attractions it offers, such as cruise tours, desert and water adventures, luxury shopping, happening nightlife, and amazing outdoor activities. Therefore, the budget needs to be high. But one question always comes to mind – is it possible to travel to Dubai on a budget? The answer lies in these tips and tricks that you can use to save costs and make your Dubai trip budget-friendly.

  • Book your flights in economy class to save on travel transportation costs. Some airlines like Etihad and Emirates also offer discounts on flight tickets.
  • Use local transport to explore Dubai. Traveling by metro is much cheaper than traveling by taxi. You can get an RTA NOL card which is the best way to save transport costs. These cards have 2 options – red Card and Silver Card – and can be used on all public transport systems.
  • Old Dubai is the best place for shopping and dining, especially if you want to experience the rich heritage and culture of Dubai. There are many wonderful celebrity restaurants which showcase the great Arabian culinary heritage. Dubai is a melting pot of different cultures. The Pyramid rooftop complex in Wafi complex is a wonderful place to watch movies with loved ones. You can also take awesome pictures and explore the serene sandy beaches of Dubai.
  • Some apps can be very helpful for saving money. You can download the ‘Definitely Dubai’ app, which will tell you about special events and offers in Dubai. Groupon is very helpful for getting discounts and great deals on food. Careem is a very good app for getting cheaper public transportation. Citching out is also a wonderful app for food recommendations. It also has reviews from locals. Dubai Skyline

  • In Dubai, women can wear Western clothing, but they should avoid short and tight clothes that may be considered indecent or immodest in Islamic culture.
  • Different nightclubs in Dubai have different dress codes, so it’s important to enquire about the requirements in advance before heading out.

  • To find affordable hotel options, it’s best to book 3-4 months in advance. During peak tourism season, hotel prices can be quite expensive, with 2-star hotels costing around 300 AED. Off-season rates for 2-star hotels are much more budget-friendly, averaging around 90-100 AED.
  • For authentic food options that showcase the wonderful Arabian cultures and hospitality, head to Old Dubai.
  • Booking accommodation near a metro line is a smart choice as it can save you transportation costs.
  • Public displays of affection, drinking in public, immodest dress, and swearing are not allowed in Dubai.
  • Photographing people without their consent is also not allowed in Dubai.
  • To stay connected with your family and friends, get a local SIM card, but remember to register it with the local police before use.
  • It’s best to carry local currency as some places in Dubai only accept cash.

Know About Dubai For Rich Tour Experience

Quick facts about dubai, why you should visit dubai.

Dubai Offers 1,000 Km OF Beautiful Beaches

Dubai's most attractive feature may be its fantastic beaches, which are on the ocean and have lovely weather all year. In Dubai, where there are more than 300 days of sunlight a year and more than 1,000 miles of shoreline to explore, tanning is never far away. Who wouldn't want to bring a tiny Christmas colour home?

Dubai is the Middle East's Centre for Modern Art & Design

Dubai has a distinctive and varied art culture, from the gritty Alserkal Avenue art district that has recently emerged in the industrial Al Quoz region to the expensive art galleries dispersed across the Financial Centre. There is always something going on for the artistically inclined, whether you wander through the Dubai Design District or visit Dubai for one of its numerous art and design events (such as Art Dubai and Design Week).

The Most Impressive Skyline in the World is in Dubai

In Downtown Dubai, near the Burj Khalifa, the tallest man-made structure in the world, or down at the marina, where four of the five tallest residential buildings in the world are situated, you're never too far from a stunning sight. Dubai's skyline is the tallest in the world based on the average height of its top ten tallest structures.

The Foodie Scenes in Dubai are Vibrant

With such a broad cosmopolitan population, the city offers a fantastic variety of gastronomic types. With hundreds of Arab, Persian, Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, French, Japanese, Chinese, British, and American restaurants, both low-key and high-end, there is something for everyone and every craving. Considering the numerous food events that occur all year long and the constant influx of pop-up restaurants, it makes sense why ex-pats complain about newcomers gaining weight or the "Dubai stone."

Dubai is Home to the Largest Fountain Display in the World, in Addition to Large Buildings

Anyone may have a great time watching the Palm Fountain enchantment, but youngsters adore it! The fountain puts on a colourful show as the water dances, leaps, and shoots far into the sky in sync with a music soundtrack. It was created to demonstrate the harmony between the universe and earth.

What is the Best Time To Visit Dubai?

Dubai experiences high temperatures, and choosing the right time is always important. If you visit during the summer, your options for outdoor activities get limited. Yet, you can enjoy waterparks, malls, and other air-conditioned destinations.

So, the winter period from November to April can be ideal for booking Dubai trip packages. Several events are happening during this period, like the Dubai Shopping Festival and more, which will add to your Dubai trip.

During November, the temperature remains around 25°C, which makes it comfortable to explore Dubai. Also, the temperature drops to 15°C in Feb, making it a comfortable time for the vacation.

Although the temperature drops, it is still important to apply a generous amount of sunscreen and protect oneself from Dubai's sun while enjoying the outdoors. For nights, you can pack some light winter clothing.

November to April is also the peak tourist season because it makes visiting Dubai more comfortable. Hence, you can expect the Dubai Tour Package Price to be high. Accommodations and also flight fares cost higher than usual. Moreover, booking accommodation also becomes a challenge. Hence, make all bookings well in advance.

How You Can Reach Dubai?

The best way you can reach to Dubai is through a flight. Several airlines operate from various Indian cities to Dubai and have regular flights. A few airlines that operate are Emirates, SpiceJet, Fly Dubai, Jet Airways, Air India, and Indigo. You can book flights and reach Dubai International Airport.

Besides Dubai International Airport, you can also take a flight to reach Sharjah International Airport, which is at Sharjah. So Sharjah is 50 kilometers from Dubai, and you can book taxis to reach Dubai. The next airport is Al Maktoum International Airport, 32 km towards southwest Dubai in Jebel Ali, and the other is Abu Dhabi International Airport in Abu Dhabi.

How to Get Dubai Tourist Visa from India?

Given the heavy traffic, limited parking and different starting and ending locations, we strongly recommend that you take the metro rather than driving to the trail. If you plan to take a taxi, please budget extra time for traffic.

Nearest metro: Sharaf DG station (green line)

Here’s What Past Guests on This Tour Are Saying

Can i book this tour as a private experience.

Yes, we’d love to serve you and any companions on a private tour! We need a minimum of 2 people and a maximum of 6 to run this tour as a private experience. You may book out an existing date on our tour calendar as a private tour if no one else has already booked spots on it. Alternatively, please email us at [email protected] with your preferred dates so we may schedule a private tour for you.

Should I join this tour if I am vegetarian?

Absolutely! This tour is mostly vegetarian (not vegan though) except for 1 chicken dish.

Will I miss my meat on this mostly vegetarian tour?

Ironically, the team that designed this almost 99% vegetarian tour are die-hard carnivores! Despite this, we have cherry-picked the dishes that best represent the community in Meena Bazaar and it turns out that most of them are vegetarian. There is such a wide range of tastings that we have yet to experience a guest, whether meat-eater or vegetarian, feeling less than “stuffed” after this gluttonous experience. You *might* even thank us for leaving out the meat at the end of the tour!

How do I get to the tour?

We recommend taking the Sharaf DG metro (green line) and then walking to the tour meeting point. The metro may or may still be operational once the tour is over, depending on the time.

If you plan to take a taxi, please budget extra time for traffic on the roads especially between 5PM and 7PM.

If you plan to drive, please know that streetside parking is available but nearly impossible to find!

Do we only walk around and sample food?

Our walking food tours are immersive experiences that go beyond eating. We combine food tastings with history, culture and personal stories of the city.

What should I bring with me?

Earphones with a 3.5mm jack for the portable audio system that helps you hear the guide clearly.

Please don’t carry anything too heavy as we will be walking. If you plan to purchase edible souvenirs during the tour, please make sure to carry both cash/your credit card (most, but not all, locations accept credit card).

What if I have dietary restrictions or allergies?

Please be sure to let us know if you (or anyone in your group) have a dietary restriction (e.g. vegetarian, diabetic, allergy, etc.) when you purchase your tickets. In most cases, nuts, lactose and gluten may be in the foods featured on our experiences and there is a risk of cross-contamination. If you have a serious allergy, we recommend contacting us at [email protected] prior to purchasing tickets to enable us to advise you if our tours are suitable for you.

Are toilet facilities available on the tour?

Yes, toilet facilities are available at some of the restaurants on this tour, though we’ll be the first to say that they’re not particularly glamorous!

Is the tour offered in different languages?

At this time, the tour is only offered in English.

Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

Are children allowed, what do we do in case of bad weather.

The tours are very rarely cancelled due to bad weather. We will email you at least 4 hours prior to the tour should it not be advisable to walk outside due to a thunderstorm or sandstorm; please make sure to check your email if you are aware of bad weather. We also advise you to check weather conditions for your tour and dress appropriately and carry an umbrella if required.

Do I need to purchase tickets in advance?

Yes, advance ticket purchase is required through this website. Our experiences, typically, sell out quickly during the peak season (November to April). To maximize your chances of getting the date, time, and number of tickets you prefer, please book well in advance.

If a tour is sold out, can I get on a waiting list?

If the date and time of your choice is sold out, we recommend emailing us at [email protected] so we can let you know in case any spots open up for your preferred date and time.

What are the change policies on my booking?

Please review our cancellation policies under our Terms and Conditions here .

Do I need to tip?

Gratuities are always appreciated but are not mandatory.

Please note that our tour routes and featured stops, including restaurants and other establishments, are subject to change. These changes can occur due to unforeseen circumstances such as lack of availability, closures or operational adjustments at any of our planned locations. In the event of such changes, our team will adapt the tour to offer a comparable experience. However, we do not offer refunds due to these alterations, as they are beyond our control. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility, and are committed to ensuring you have a delightful and memorable experience with us.

I visited Dubai a lot when my brother was living there and I really loved it! It is so diverse and not only that it has Indian cuisine but all cuisines all over the Middle East and Asia. Of course, I’d always be biased with Indian food. I really love strong flavors! I didn’t go to these restaurants but I will definitely try it when I am back. Thanks for sharing, Yukti!

P.S. Do you live in Dubai? Just wondering if it’s possible for digital nomads to relocate there! I just heard about the digital nomad visa.

I love Indian food & really wish I had read this before my last visit to Dubai! I haven’t been for a few years & not sure I when I will make it back but I would definitely like to check out a few of these when I do. Thanks for sharing!

I am sure it was great to find such a large number and variety of Indian restaurants in Dubai. Love the restaurants that blend authentic food and decor. There should be something for everyone. I would definitely check for the degree of spice. This spice wimp lawyers wants it less spicy. Always great if you can find a Groupon for a bit of a deal.

Thank you very much for providing such a detailed list of eateries in Dubai, with the phone numbers. I prefer to go for Punjabi food.

I love to eat Indian food, if it’s not too spicy of course 😛 Those restaurants in Dubai look so elegant and rich, not like I remember from India. I was wandering about the first one, Maharaja, it serves food from Rajastan, but the photo looks like food in Kerala, is it similar?

Hi Anita, the food from Rajasthan and Kerala are very different but as both have Thali option , so it is looking similar to you.

Paid parking in Dubai: Residents face up to Dh4,000 extra yearly costs when new rates kick in

An Indian business group with presence in the UAE will launch an airline that they claim will provide economical air tickets for residents. The Alhind group, which has been operating in the travel industry for more than three decades, have received the mandatory clearance required to start its domestic airline in India.

The group chairman, Mohammad Haris, told Khaleej Times that they were in the final stages of getting approvals. “Last week, we had a meeting with officials at the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL); we submitted all documents required for landing permission at the airport,” he said. “We had earlier received the no objection certificate (NOC) to start the airline. We are hoping to begin operations by January 2025, if not earlier.”

Alhind Airline will begin with three ATR-72 turboprop planes. Initially serving just Indian cities, the company has plans to expand rapidly. “We will start with three flights but as soon as we have 20 flights, we will begin international operations and our first destination will be the UAE,” confirmed a spokesperson for the company.

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

“We have had a presence in this region for several years and some of our most loyal customers are from the UAE. We will aim to keep our ticket prices as one of the lowest in the market to serve the expats here. The Middle East will be the focus of our international operations.”

Although he did not commit to a definitive time frame for start of international operations, he said the company is aiming for it at the earliest. “Previously, Akash Airline in India started its international operations within just 17 months of starting its domestic airline,” he said. “We are hoping to follow a similar timeline if not shorter.”

According to him, Alhind management has engaged in discussions with key figures, including India’s Civil Aviation Minister and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, who have both offered whole-hearted support to the project.

With its headquarters based out of the southern Indian state of Kerala, Alhind group has a presence across various segments including ticketing, tour operations, charters, hotel bookings, and visa services. According to company records, the group has a turnover of over Dh8 billion. The group, which operates under the umbrella of Alhind Business Centre in the UAE, has had a presence in the country for over 19 years.

“We are a General Sales Agent and are already booking passengers for various Indian airlines including Spice Jet,” said the official. “So, starting an airline is a very natural progression for us. The planning and work of this has been going on for several years.”

The official also confirmed that the group will operate an Airbus A320 for its Middle East routes, which will have a business class. To keep its costs low, the company will only hire minimal number of staff.

“We already have two offices in Kerala and New Delhi,” he said. “We have hired only enough staff to keep our operations smooth. We want to keep our overheads low so that we can offer the most economical ticket rates to our customers. Once we start our international operations, we will have an office in the UAE.”

Earlier, two-Dubai based businessmen spoke to Khaleej Times about launching a low cost airline Air Kerala , the Indian state's first regional airline. Under the name Zettfly Aviation, the airline received an NOC to operate scheduled commuter air transport services for three years. After the necessary preparations, the airline will first launch domestic flights in India's southernmost state, and later international expansion will see Dubai as one of its first international destinations.

Dubai may be known for its shimmering skyscrapers and luxury lifestyle but, at its heart, this is still a desert land. Peer out of any high-rise and your eyes will soon settle on a strip of pale-yellow sand in the distance, once home to nomadic tribes who used the night skies as maps.

A man driving a jeep in the dessert on a sand dune in Dubai, UAE

It’s a hot evening when I head into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve with desert safari operator Platinum Heritage . While there’s a singular beauty to the landscapes by day with their wandering camels, dunes carved into wave-like patterns by the wind and hardy desert plants that add glimmers of silvery green, it’s at night when the inky skies put on dazzling celestial spectacles.

A fascination with the desert is shared by locals and those who have chosen to make Dubai their home. South Africa-born Austin Landsey, a conservation guide at Platinum Heritage, fell in love with the stars when he moved here in 2021, finding inspiration in the connection between the constellations and Arabian heritage.

“The most important star for the Bedouin was the North Star, or Polaris. They would use it to find their way around the desert and to find different water sources in different seasons,” says Landsey. “The position of certain stars and constellations helped them track the passage of time and determine when to migrate.”

And so here we are, bouncing through the desert in a vintage Land Rover, with our faces wrapped in scarves to protect us from the sand thrown up by the tyres. The evening begins when we pile out of the car at a sheltered patch of sand with cushions and low tables facing the sunset. As we nibble on snacks and sip cold drinks, the sun makes its slow progress towards the western horizon, heavy and orange against a sky that gradually changes from dusky pink to dusty grey.

As the sun drops out of view, our guides tell us to turn around and face the other way, where the first glow of a peach-coloured rising supermoon illuminates the sky behind the dunes. As it gets higher, it becomes whiter and more defined, eventually so bright that it casts shadows of palms, people and ruminating camels onto the sand.

The sound and aroma of coffee beans roasted over white-hot coals signify the start of dinner, where freshly made flatbreads and platters of grilled meats and vegetables are served under the bright supermoon. Once replete, we lie back and gaze upwards as an astronomer tells us tales of the sky, recounting the names given to the constellations by ancient Arab and Greek astronomers.

Two men looking up at the night sky, stargazing through a telescope in the desert in Dubai, UAE

I peer through a high-powered telescope at the silvery white moon, full of pale grey craters, ridges, ejecta rays and lines formed by asteroids and comets smashing into its surface over millennia. Depending on the time of year, the Dubai night sky forms a canvas for the Milky Way, Sirius, Orion, and Canis Minor and Major, as well as Cassiopeia, which was used to find the all-important North Star.

“Cassiopeia was the signal for the Bedouin to start their night journeys, a symbol of guidance, protection and enduring connection to the desert,” explains Landsey. Tonight, even the moon’s luminosity can’t diminish the brightness of Saturn in the cloudless sky. Through the telescope, its rings are perfectly clear, like a high-resolution illustration.

As we gaze at the sky and listen to tales of antiquity, mythology and astronomy, I feel a connection to the lives of the Bedouin, who once sat around campfires telling their own stories at night. Beneath its glitz and glamour, Dubai’s deep connection with its desert heritage lives on. You just no longer need a map of the stars to navigate it.
