LeBron James said his travel against the Utah Jazz was the worst one of his life, and folks, he was not wrong. James dribbled the ball past the halfcourt line, then just walked a bit before remembering to dribble it again. That is not how basketball is played. Yet somehow, none of the referees blew their whistle.

During the game, James talked to a fan after realizing how awful the play was. âI didnât even know I did it until I saw it at halftime,â he said. âThatâs the worst Iâve ever done. Yeah, that was f-cked up.â
LeBron to a fan about his no-call travel/double-dribble: âYeah I know that was bad. That was real bad. I didnât even know I did it until I saw it at half-time. Thatâs the worst Iâve ever done. Yeah, that was f-cked up. I feel bad for them though.â pic.twitter.com/YNffJPN1t9 â Yoni (@OriginalYoni) December 5, 2019
âI think I was ready to pass the ball,â James said after the game, according to ESPN , âand my brain just kind of just, I had a malfunction. I really had a malfunction ... I feel bad for the refs on that one because theyâll probably get a write-up on that or something.â
Jamesâ travel was hilariously bad, but itâs far from the first time a playerâs egregiously messed up and forgot to put the ball on the ground. Here are some of the best travels to not get called by the officials.
Bradley Beal âs gallop
Blake Griffin âs defense psyched out Beal , who, after taking his two steps on a drive to the hoop, took three more steps.
No whistle.
Worst of all, referees after the game stood by the call!
âThe offensive player gathers with his right foot on the ground,â the official ref account tweeted . âHe then takes two legal steps, before losing control of the ball. After regaining possession, a player is allowed to regain his pivot foot and pass or shoot prior to that foot returning to the ground. This is legal.â
The time Dirk Nowitzki played hopscotch
Nowitzki really just kept taking mini bunny hops going backwards. He took seven steps! Seven!
Kemba Walkerâs jump-and-spin
Walkerâs hop-step was a total mess, and his awkward landing sent him into another spin and a half-step and then ... a layup? The Celticsâ defense had a right to be Mad As Hell.
Take a bus next time, Kemba... pic.twitter.com/vbTeDh7FUT â Dime (@DimeUPROXX) April 12, 2016
Kendrick Perkins â nine-step walk
NINE! 9! (NINE?!)
Perkins kept changing his pivot foot and not a single soul in black-and-white stripes paid attention. They thought this looked fine:
WATCH: Kendrick Perkins' 9-step travel highlights this edition of "Shaqtin' A Fool!" https://t.co/tvDm4hycAP â NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) April 10, 2015
Dwyane Wade âs seven-step travel
Wade dribbled down the court, similar to James, and appeared to do some stretching with the ball over his head while changing his pivot foot over and over again. In basketball, you simply can not do that.
Josh Smithâs 20+-step travel
This is so bad that I have no words.
Corey Brewer âs dunk travel
In comparison to some of his colleagues, Brewer taking six steps before dunking wasnât all that bad!
James Harden âs double step-back
The best for last. This one is so legendary that it even had a failed reboot. Harden shuffled his feet backwards twice for a walk so obvious that nobody called it.
Months later, Steph Curry did it ... but he got whistled!
They just called a travel on Steph for doing the Harden double stepback. Ha pic.twitter.com/6HGgE55rfZ â Drew Shiller (@DrewShiller) January 6, 2019
Harden is, to date, our uncalled travel king.
Next time you complain that a specific player âalways gets away with travels,â remember: They are not the only ones.

LeBron James explains his ridiculous travel that was not called
LeBron James somehow got away with what may have been the most obvious travel in NBA history on Wednesday night, and even he seemed like he was in disbelief after he watched the replay.
Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ 121-96 win over the Utah Jazz, LeBron admitted that he should have been called for a travel in the first quarter when he stopped his dribble and took more than three steps before putting the ball back on the floor. He called it “probably one of the worst things I’ve ever done in my career.”
“I think at the same time, I was watching the underneath play, and KCP and Donovan got into it. KCP started to run, and Donovan bumped into him, he fell on the ground,” LeBron said, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin . “I think I was ready to pass the ball, and my brain just kind of just, I had a malfunction. I really had a malfunction.”
LeBron said he didn’t even realize he had traveled until a coach showed him the replay at halftime. You can imagine what he must have thought when he watched the video:
LeBron got away with one pic.twitter.com/Uv4uMKKcDi — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) December 5, 2019
A fan heckled James about the travel during the third quarter, and he could be heard on the TV broadcast responding, “That’s one of the worst things I’ve ever done in my life.” He also said after the game that he felt sympathy for the officials.
“I feel bad for the refs on that one because they’ll probably get a write-up on that or something,” LeBron said. “That was pretty bad.”
We have seen NBA refs miss traveling violations during crucial moments in big games , so fortunately LeBron’s was not one of those instances. You have to wonder if an official would have blown the whistle if it were any player other than King James.

SALT LAKE CITY -- LeBron James broke a personal seven-game road losing streak to the Utah Jazz , dating back to December 2010, in the Los Angeles Lakers ' 121-96 win Wednesday, but there was one sequence he would like to get back.
As James was bringing the ball past half court in the first quarter, he picked up his dribble and proceeded to take 3½ steps -- making it from the "A" to the "H" of Utah's midcourt signage -- before putting the ball on the floor again, with no travel call made by the official.
"It was the worst thing, probably one of the worst things I've ever done in my career," James said after the game, essentially admitting his final line of 20 points, 12 assists and just one turnover should have included a second turnover. "I didn't realize I did it until halftime. One of my coaches showed me."
Jazz forward Bojan Bogdanovic didn't take quite as long to recognize the miscue, signaling to referee Jacyn Goble as soon as it happened.
James said he was distracted by a collision involving Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Donovan Mitchell and absent-mindedly kept shuffling his feet as he checked it out.
"I think at the same time, I was watching the underneath play, and KCP and Donovan got into it. KCP started to run, and Donovan bumped into him, he fell on the ground," James said. "I think I was ready to pass the ball, and my brain just kind of just, I had a malfunction. I really had a malfunction."
James had fun with a fan heckling him about the play in the third quarter by heckling himself right back.
"That's one of the worst ones I've ever done in my life," he could be heard saying to the fan on the Spectrum SportsNet broadcast of the game.
Lakers guard Danny Green said he finally saw James' happy feet in the postgame locker room.
"I was wondering where I was when it happened. I'm like, 'When the hell did this happen?' So, yeah, I didn't catch it," Green said. "But it was funny to see after the game."
James, who has publicly critiqued NBA officiating several times this season, acknowledged he was the beneficiary of a no-call this time around.
"I feel bad for the refs on that one because they'll probably get a write-up on that or something," James said. "That was pretty bad."
LeBron James Was Called For a Pretty Blatant Travel and People Still Got Mad Online
By stephen douglas | mar 29, 2023.
The Los Angeles Lakers visited the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night after losing to them in LA on Sunday. And a funny thing happened. LeBron James got called for a travel. It was a pretty easy call for the officials and Bulls announcer Stacey King hit visiting star with a solid one-liner. You would think that would be it, but this is the Internet.
"DID YOU BRING A PASSPORT WITH YOU?" Bulls announcers didn't hold back on Bron đ pic.twitter.com/38X4n720Se â NBA on ESPN (@ESPNNBA) March 30, 2023
First, many people who see this clip assume that the travel was not called because players - sometimes even LeBron himself - often get away with this sort of thing. So there are people mad or annoyed at the NBA and its officials for a correct call.
And then there are people in the replies to the above video arguing that it wasn't actually a travel because he was gathering . I swear to you that those people exist. There is truly no limit to what you will argue if venture into basketball Twitter. This league indeed.

LeBron James explains how he 'malfunctioned' on that hilarious missed travel call in the Lakers-Jazz game
Lebron picked the ball up, took a few steps, then started dribbling again like nothing happened.
Over the course of a long season, it can sometimes take teams a few minutes to get into the flow of the game. As the matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz on Wednesday night showed us, that apparently applies to the referees as well.Â
A little over two minutes into the game, LeBron James brought the ball up the floor for the Lakers, as he does countless times per game. This time, after crossing midcourt, he took a few seconds to survey the defense, and then forgot to keep dribbling. That sounds somewhat ridiculous for any player, but especially one of LeBron's caliber. However, there's really no other explanation for what happened.Â
Just watch. He picks up the ball, casually strolls for a few more steps, then starts dribbling again as if nothing happened. Meanwhile, Bojan Bogdanovic is screaming and pointing at the referee to blow the whistle and call a travel (or double-dribble), but gets met with silence.Â
Bron went for a walk đ pic.twitter.com/aLOlXpmrnu â Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) December 5, 2019
While talking to reporters after the game, LeBron didn't shy away from talking about how awful of a travel it was.
"It was the worst thing, probably one of the worst things I've ever done in my career," James said. "I didn't realize I did it until halftime. One of my coaches showed me."
While it was one of those "athletes are just like us" moments, LeBron did offer up an explanation for what exactly happened in that moment and what he was focusing on.
"I think at the same time, I was watching the underneath play, and KCP and Donovan got into it. KCP started to run, and Donovan bumped into him, he fell on the ground," James said. "I think I was ready to pass the ball, and my brain just kind of just, I had a malfunction. I really had a malfunction.
"I feel bad for the refs on that one because they'll probably get a write-up on that or something."
To be fair to the referee, it does appear like his head was pointed in the other direction as LeBron pauses his dribble, which would explain why he missed the violation. When Bogdanovic screams, you can see him snap his head back to LeBron, who at that point was about to dribble again.Â
It's a bit understandable that he looked away, as you wouldn't expect anything to happen when a superstar is dribbling by himself near midcourt. And to be honest it's not like LeBron got some big advantage in that situation. Bogdanovic wasn't pressuring him, and when he starts dribbling again he's still 30-plus feet from the basket.Â
Obviously, he should have been called for traveling, but it's still a hilarious moment. And the fact that it was LeBron, of all people, only makes it funnier. Not only did we get to see one of the best basketball players of all time look like a clueless third grader for a few seconds, but the missed call will only fuel the conspiracy theories that the league is biased towards LeBron and the Lakers.Â
All in all, it's just a perfect moment for the current era of the NBA.Â

Turns Out LeBron James Traveled On 'No-Call' Against Celtics, But Lakers Won't Stop Whining About Officiating
LeBron James and the Lakers (including their fans) hopped on a soapbox after Saturday night's loss against the Boston Celtics to complain about lopsided officiating going against the LA team.
Well, once you dig into the controversial play, there's more to it than LA's opinion.
With the score tied 105-105, LeBron drove to the basket for a layup only to get hit on the arm by Celtics star Jayson Tatum. No foul was called by the official and the game went into overtime, where the Lakers had another shot at winning the game but fumbled the opportunity, losing 125-121.
LeBron went hysterical after the no-call, and his supporters hopped online to suggest NBA refs hold a bias against James.
Turns out they actually did him a favor on that play by not calling an evident travel en route to the basket.
New baseline footage released from the final seconds of regulation shows LeBron taking THREE big steps to the basket, with the ref keeping the silent whistle tucked in his mouth.
The outrage following the game was tremendous, prompting the NBA referees union to release a statement on Sunday, calling the non-foul call on LeBron "gut-wrenching."
RELATED: NBA REFS CALL LEBRON JAMES’ NON-FOUL A ‘GUT-WRENCHING’ MOMENT AFTER FULL DAY OF WHINING FROM LAKERS FANS
James, his teammates and Lakers nation's overreactions fed a narrative that LA has been denied win after win due to bad officiating.
Had the 13th-seeded Lakers followed through on their outrage with an overtime performance to match, perhaps they could have been celebrating a win Saturday morning. But instead, they shouted to the Southland sky, begging the NBA to take action and gift LeBron the "win" he never deserved against the Celtics.
Sports will always be a meritocracy where the better team, that day, will win in the end.
The Lakers and their fans profess that this is a squad that's serious about winning; the same 23-28 team that's in the middle of a crucial road-trip stretch but still opted to rest their top players on Monday night against the Nets, only to lose yet again. Who's to blame there?
NBA reveals Warriors hurt by missed LeBron travel call
By tom dierberger • published march 6, 2022 • updated on march 7, 2022 at 12:37 pm.
There are missed calls in every NBA game. But some are more costly than others.
With the Warriors slumping in the midst of a four-game losing streak, every non-call and disadvantage stings a bit more.
On Sunday, the NBA released its Last Two Minute Report for Golden State's 124-116 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena. The most notable of the referee miscues was a non-call on a late travel by LeBron James.

After Steph Curry trimmed the Lakers' lead to 119-116 on a layup with 1:06 remaining in regulation, Lakers coach Frank Vogel called a timeout. A game-defining possession awaited both teams.
Opting to facilitate rather than score after the breather, LeBron bounced a pass to guard Russell Westbrook, who missed a fadeaway jumper. Lakers rookie Austin Reaves grabbed the offensive board and tossed it back to LeBron, who began directing traffic on the Lakers logo at half-court.Â
LeBron, being guarded by Klay Thompson, drove into the paint and dished it outside for teammate Carmelo Anthony, who nailed the wide-open 3-pointer to make it 122-116.

However, the league's report indicates LeBron traveled on his way into the paint before passing to Anthony in the corner.
"James (LAL) splits his pivot foot at the start of his dribble," it reads.

Newton cites Draymond's college football stint in NFL-NBA debate
Draymond shades Gobert for not guarding Jokic in playoffs
If a travel had been called, Golden State would have gained possession down three points with 38.6 seconds remaining. Curry and company then could have tied it up or executed a two-for-one therefore greatly increasing their chances to steal a win on the road and end their losing skid.
Instead, the Warriors will take their four-game losing streak to Ball Arena on Monday night when they face the Denver Nuggets.

LeBron James says uncalled travel 'one of the worst' of his career

NBA Refereesâ Response to Missed Call on LeBron James Goes Viral
- Author: Mike McDaniel
In this story:
The Celtics picked up a pivotal 125â121 overtime victory over the visiting Lakers on Saturday night at TD Garden in Boston, but the story of the game was the missed foul call on LeBron James as he drove to the hoop at the end of regulation.
James, who finished with a game-high 41 points, got to the rim at the end of the regulation and appeared to be fouled by Celtics star Jayson Tatum. The officials elected to not make the call, and James and his teammates were incensed.
In the aftermath on Sunday, the verified Twitter account for the NBA officials admitted fault in a viral tweet that included a still shot of the blown call.
âLike everyone else, referees make mistakes,â the tweet read. âWe made one at the end of last nightâs game and that is gut-wrenching for us. This play will weigh heavily and cause sleepless nights as we strive to be the best referees we can be.â
James and Anthony Davis took the officiating to task in the postgame, adamant that the officials missed the call. Even though the officials admitted their mistake on Sunday, it will still go down in the loss column for the Lakers, who are fighting for playoff positioning as Davis and James have missed time with injuries throughout the season.
NBA fans werenât amused by the leagueâs response.
The Lakers travel to Brooklyn to play the Nets on Monday night.

NBA refs say âgut-wrenchingâ no-call on LeBron James layup will cause âsleepless nightsâ
NBA referees said Sunday that the no-call on a LeBron James layup attempt in the final seconds of regulation during the Lakersâ overtime loss to the Celtics on Saturday was a âgut-wrenchingâ mistake. Hereâs what you need to know:
- On the final play of regulation, James drove to the hoop and missed a layup as time expired. As he protested the lack of a foul call, Patrick Beverley walked up to a referee with a camera, appearing to show the missed call before being given a technical foul.
- The gameâs crew chief admitted afterward that they make a mistake on the play.
- âLike everyone else, referees make mistakes,â the official NBA referees Twitter account said Sunday. âWe made one at the end of last nightâs game and that is gut-wrenching for us. This play will weigh heavily and cause sleepless nights as we strive to be the best referees we can be.â

For several weeks, Jamesâ frustration with the way heâs being officiated this season has been bubbling. In the seconds after regulation ended against the Celtics , it erupted on one of the gameâs biggest regular-season stages: a prime-time matchup between the leagueâs fiercest rivals.
With four seconds remaining, and the game tied at 105, James drove past Malcolm Brogdon and easily got to the rim. As James extended his left arm for a layup, Jayson Tatum rotated over and swiped down, smacking Jamesâ arm and causing him to miss the point-blank attempt as time expired.
To Jamesâ disbelief, there was no whistle.

He immediately stomped around, gesticulating with his left arm to highlight where the contact occurred. James then hopped around in an uncharacteristic display of emotion. As his frustration overwhelmed him, he crumpled to the floor, struggling to contain his anger.
In a pool report after the game, Lewis said that the referee crew missed the contact from Tatum on Jamesâ layup attempt.

âThere was contact,â Lewis said. âAt the time, during the game, we did not see a foul. The crew missed the play.â
What the Lakers think
Los Angeles coach Darvin Ham said after the game that he didnât care to see another Last Two Minute Report stating the Lakers had been wronged late in another heartbreaker. That was exactly what happened Sunday, only this time with the additional comment from the NBA referees on Twitter. While the refereesâ intentions were good, at this point, the Lakers arenât looking for apologies. Theyâre hoping that these types of mistakes will stop happening and costing them games that they need to win to make up ground in the standings. And if it continues to happen, they want tangible repercussions. â Buha
Further fallout?
The additional cost of this loss is that the Lakers are resting James and Anthony Davis on the front end of their New York back-to-back in Brooklyn, meaning that they will now likely start this five-game road trip 0-2. Another loss puts the Lakers two games back from the Play-In Tournament and four back from the playoffs. While 1-1 versus 0-2 on the road trip might not sound like a big difference, every game matters for the Lakers at this point of the season. â Buha

The Lakers-Celtics game went to overtime after LeBron James missed a layup just before the buzzer, although replays showed that the Los Angeles superstar was fouled by Jayson Tatum on the crucial play.
The NBA has reportedly admitted the officials blew the call on LeBron. However, that's not changing the fact that uncalled foul cost the Lakers a win on the road.
Boston won in overtime, 125-121 .
Many players reacted to the episode at the end of the 4th quarter. Anthony Davis slammed the officials , LeBron could not get the decision, while Lakers head coach Darvin Ham said that it's becoming increasingly difficult to win games and fight not only with opponents but with unfavorable calls from NBA refs.
The Lakers representatives were joined by multiple famous basketball people on social media.

LeBron James and Lakers in disbelief over no-call in loss at Boston: 'We got cheated'
There are excuses. There are facts.
Darvin Ham isnât one for excuses, and pointing to the referees, to Ham, is an excuse.
But after LeBron James didnât get sent to the free-throw line at the end of regulation Saturday night in Boston and the Lakers couldnât get right in overtime, Ham leaned on his facts.
After losing to Boston 125-121 , the Lakersâ coach and their star players all felt the same. They did enough to win. They shouldâve won. And things outside of their control were the main reason they didnât.
âAs much as you try not to put it on the officiating, itâs becoming increasingly difficult,â Ham said. âThereâs a bunch of stuff we could have did better in this game, but for the most part, we competed our behinds off, played the right way, played together, stayed aggressive, playing down, playing in the paint. And itâs unfortunate that the game ends off a play like that.â
âWe got cheated,â forward Anthony Davis said.
Sources not authorized to speak publicly said the Lakers were quickly informed by NBA officiating staff after the game that a foul shouldâve been called on the play. Later, crew chief Eric Lewis said the officials shouldâve whistled a foul.
âThere was contact,â he told a pool reporter. âAt the time, during the game, we did not see a foul. The crew missed the play.â
Asked about the play, Bostonâs Jayson Tatum , who hit James on the arm, smiled.
âThe last two minutes and overtime was a blur. I donât really know what happened,â he said. âThink I have to watch the game, watch the film. Everything happened so fast. Gotta move on and we got the win. That's all I got to say about that.â
That one hurt BIG TIME!!! I don't understand â LeBron James (@KingJames) January 29, 2023
Itâs the second time a potential James game-winner went without a call this month; the Lakers learned James shouldâve shot free throws after a drive in the first overtime of a two-overtime loss to Dallas. The Lakers also shouldâve been granted a potential game-tying free throw when Kendrick Nunn made a three against Sacramento on Jan. 18 with less than 10 seconds left.
âItâs been building,â James said after the game. âBecause you guys seen some of the games weâve lost this year with late-game missed calls. We had an opportunity to literally win the game. I had the second one in the last few weeks for myself â against Dallas, had an opportunity to win on a foul call. K-Nunn the other day had an opportunity to tie the game if the four-point play is called. I donât understand.
âI donât understand what weâre doing. And I watch basketball every single day. I watch games every single day. And I donât see it happening to nobody else. Itâs just weird.â
James finished with 41 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. He attempted six free throws. Tatum and Jaylen Brown took a total of 23 for Boston.
âThe best player on earth canât get a call,â Ham said. âItâs amazing.â
Brown tied the score before the James no-call on an and-one putback that the Lakers also criticized, saying they felt guard Patrick Beverley got all ball and that the whistle came late.
Beverley, in particular, had a huge impact, helping harass Tatum before hitting a go-ahead three and a go-ahead dunk in the final minute of regulation.
But the Lakers didnât do enough to keep a no-call from mattering.
In his second game back, Davis struggled, scoring 16 points without a steal or a block while finishing a team-low minus-16.
Beverley, who was set to be the hero, missed a free throw in the final minute of the fourth that kept the Lakers from icing the game â much like misses from the line cost them wins against Philadelphia and Boston earlier in the season.
Then after regulation, Beverley took a camera and showed an image of James getting fouled to to an official, instantly getting called for a technical while giving the Celtics a free point at the line to start overtime.
âThereâs a bunch we can do better,â Ham said.
And there still are the questions about Russell Westbrook . Against the Celtics, Westbrook struggled â the crowd egging him on to shoot. He started 0 for 6 before scoring his first points from the free-throw line and spent the entire fourth quarter on the bench.
But in overtime, Westbrook sparked the Lakers with a tip-in while drawing a foul. He made the free throw, plus two more after drawing a flagrant foul.
Then, he missed a corner three and, on the next possession, a reverse layup. He declined to speak to reporters after the game.
The Lakers (23-27) got closer to full health, guard Lonnie Walker IV coming back to score 13 points off the bench in his most-efficient shooting game of the year.
James scored 40 or more for the fifth time since turning 38 on Dec. 30.
But they were left to air their gripes after the game.
One thing Ham didnât want was another retroactive apology.
âI donât want to see another two-minute report,â he said. âThey can save that. It does no one any good and we just have to focus on how we can get better in different stretches of the game, how we make sure weâre doing what we can control.â
This story originally appeared in Los Angeles Times .
LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Lakers need more, but do they have it in the tank?
DENVER â The images of LeBron James losing the basketball as he went up for a breakaway reverse dunk, of getting a point-blank shot stuffed by the rim and missing another layup late in the fourth quarter will haunt the Los Angeles Lakers until the next game.
Those missed shots didnât decide the outcome of Denverâs 108-103 victory over the Lakers in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals Thursday. But they were emblematic of a larger concern. Do the Lakers have enough to overcome a 2-0 deficit?
Enough talent? Enough stamina?
Fortunes change quickly in a seven-game series, and James knows that as well as anyone.
"We improved from Game 1 to Game 2,â James said, "and if we can do the same thing from Game 2 to Game 3, we put ourselves in a position to win.â
James complimented the Lakersâ defense, which held Denverâs potent offense to 43.8% shooting. But that didnât stop Nikola Jokic from getting a 23-point, 17-rebound, 12-assist triple-double or Jamal Murray from a game-high 37 points, including 27 in the second half and 23 in the fourth quarter on 6-for-7 shooting.
"It's no surprise to anybody, he's done it before," James said. "Hate to be on the other side of it, but I don't feel like we had many breakdowns when he was doing what he was doing. He made shots, and sometimes it's a make-or-miss league."

But the Lakers arenât going to win many games at this stage with James and Anthony Davis scoring a combined 40 points on 13-for-34 shooting. They might be able to get away with James going for 22 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds, but they canât win with Anthony Davis scoring 18 points on 4-for-15 shooting with four turnovers along with 14 rebounds, four assists and four steals.
âI got the same looks,â Davis said. âA lot of them were just short tonight. I'll be better.â
He had 40 points in Game 1 and followed it with a poor offensive game, a trend that has become noticeable in the playoffs. One great game. One bad game.
âI'm going to continue to shoot those shots and I got to be better, more efficient, help the team win,â Davis said. âSo, I'll be better.â
Davis was 3-for-9 shooting in the second half, and James is 0-for-10 on 3-pointers in the series. His overall statline looked fine, but it didn't provide the game-altering impact. They donât need anyone to tell them thatâs not good enough in the conference finals.
This isnât easy for the Lakers. Their opponent isnât Memphis or Golden State. The Nuggets are the No. 1 seed in the West and have been since December. Their offense is tremendous, their defense improved and two-time MVP Jokic is dominating in the playoffs.
Heâs a bear, and not just your average bear. The 6-11, 284-pound Serbian is the kind who scores, passes, rebounds and is averaging a triple-double through 13 playoff games.
The Lakers have defended Jokic with multiple players â Davis, James, Rui Hachimura â and thatâs coach Darvin Hamâs plan.
âJoker is one of those guys, you got to change matchups,â Ham said. "You got to change coverages, and I won't get into any details about what we plan to do going forward, but that's just the way it is. In general terms, he's going to make you work, he's going to make you go in your bag of tricks to try to slow him down."
James, 38, claimed fatigue wasnât a factor. "If you're not tired in the postseason, I mean, everybody's tired," he said.
The Lakers lost the two games in Denver by a combined 11 points. They donât think theyâre that far from a victory.
âWhat you take out of it is the fact that this is not the NCAA tournament, it's the first team to four wins,â James said. âWe have an opportunity to go home and play great basketball and hold serve. So until a team beats you four times then you always have an opportunity to come out of it. So that's the confidence that we should have.
âI know it's going to be a tough hill to climb up, but we still have an opportunity to play good basketball and play the best basketball of the series in Game 3.â
Even with James and Davis not having great games, they didnât leave discouraged.
Lakers guard Austin Reaves said, âWho knows where weâd be without them.â
The Lakers are about to find out how far they can go with James and Davis. And if theyâre not better, it wonât be any further.
