Best Dolphin Tours Tampa

The excitement of spotting a dolphin and having it swim alongside the boat, jumping out of the water and performing trips is indescribable. It’s amazing to me how much these animals enjoy life, and how they’re always willing to have fun with humans- despite being completely wild. Honestly, taking one of these dolphin tours in Tampa will leave you with memories to last a lifetime.

1. Dolphin Shelling Snorkeling Cruise in Tampa

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (185+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 3-3.5 hours | 🐬 BOOK NOW

My favourite dolphin tour which leaves from Tampa itself is the Dolphin Shelling Snorkeling Cruise in Tampa , with over 185 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ reviews!

Review which says "We weren’t sure what to expect with this excursion, but we had an absolute blast. The captain would always stop and circle when dolphins were spotted, was very informative about where to snorkel and was very laid back. It truly felt like a private charter."

Dolphin Shelling Snorkeling Cruise in Tampa is a fantastic opportunity to see dolphins, go snorkelling in the Gulf of Mexico, and collect some unique seashells on the shore.

One of the best aspects of this boat cruise is that it visits Key Shell Preserve, which is a 1,800-acre natural preserve area that is home to all kinds of species – including dolphins, manatees, birds, hermit crabs, and lots of different fish.

As a nature-preserved area, Key Shell Preserve is known for being a dolphin hot spot , so there is a high chance of seeing dolphins swimming around on your trip here. Additionally, Key Shell Preserve is only accessible by boat and so this tour is the perfect way to get there.

This tour is also unique as it offers the opportunity to go snorkelling, with snorkel gear included. Not many dolphin tours offer this experience.

If you picture yourself snorkelling through the Gulf of Mexico’s crystal clear water on a warm summer day – then this is the perfect tour for you. Just imagine if you spot a dolphin too!

The boat will also dock to allow you to look for some unique seashells, which make for great souvenirs from Florida!

This tour departs from Madeira Beach, which is just a short drive from downtown Tampa. Super convenient.

After the tour, enjoy drinks at the Cambria Hotel Rooftop bar with ocean views. I also recommend checking out Johns Pass, which is an area next to Maderia Beach that has some great seaside shops and restaurants.

All in all, if you want the best dolphin tour which leaves from Tampa, book the Dolphin Shelling Snorkeling Cruise in Tampa .

2. 1.5-hour Dolphin Sightseeing Cruise from Tampa

⭐ RATING: 4 out of 5 Stars (295+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 🐬 BOOK NOW

Another very good tour which leaves from Tampa is the 1.5-hour Dolphin Sightseeing Cruise from Tampa . Again, it’s very highly rated with a 4/5 average after nearly 300 reviews.

Review which says "The tour was great! Our guide was fantastic. We saw dolphins and enjoyed the commentary and music onboard. We will be recommending and already have recommended this tour to our friends."

1.5-hour Dolphin Sightseeing Cruise from Tampa is the perfect option to see dolphins from a tour departing directly from downtown Tampa.

The Tampa dolphin tour leaves from the heart of downtown Tampa and will take you along the picturesque Tampa River before entering the bay. The Tampa River is a scenic part of the downtown and will provide great city views. Two tours for the price of one!

Your tour will then venture into the bay, which is a popular spot for dolphins to swim and play with their young . The guides are experts at looking for dolphins, and as soon as they spot some, they will pull the boat up within 30 feet so that you get a great view!

It’s worth saying that the tours on this list are all eco tours and dolphin-friendly , and do not harm the dolphins in any way. In fact, the dolphins actually really enjoy swimming through the waves the boats create.

This tour is an awesome option for anyone staying in downtown Tampa, as the meeting point is centrally located off the Tampa Riverwalk and nearby other popular downtown spots like Sparkman Warf, The Tampa Bay History Center, and the Amelia Arena.

It is also perfect for those with only a limited amount of time in Tampa, as this 1.5-hour tour will take you out into the bay to see dolphins without taking up your entire day.

If you want a tour that leaves right from the centre of Tampa, then 1.5-hour Dolphin Sightseeing Cruise from Tampa is the tour for you.

While the above Tampa dolphin tours are great options for those staying in downtown Tampa, there are even more options available in nearby Clearwater.

Clearwater is located only about a 45-minute drive away from Tampa , and if you have the time, I highly recommend spending the whole day there.

Not only do the best dolphin tours leave from Clearwater , but you can also spend some time at one of Florida’s most popular beaches, Clearwater Beach. Getting from downtown Tampa to Clearwater is also pretty easy, as you can rent a car or take an Uber there.

Personally, I much prefer the tours from Clearwater, and even if you only visit for the dolphin tour, it’s still worth making the drive in my opinion.

3. Little Toot Dolphin Adventure at Clearwater Beach

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (4200+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.25 hours | 🐬 BOOK NOW

By far the best dolphin tour on this list is the Little Toot Dolphin Adventure at Clearwater Beach . It has over 4000, yes 4000, 5-star reviews. It’s my favourite dolphin tour in the whole world- I’ve also taken dolphin tours in Lisbon and a few other places.

dolphin tours near tampa

When booking a tour, no matter what tour it is, I like to go with the tried and tested option. Seeing a tour with thousands of reviews instantly tells me this is the best and most popular tour. It’s actually the first dolphin tour I ever took in Florida too, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Little Toot Dolphin Adventure at Clearwater Beach is a fantastic dolphin tour option, as the Little Toot is an adorable tug boat that creates a particular type of wave behind it. The best part about this special wave is that the dolphins actually like to play in it. Therefore, with this unique dolphin tour, you have the possibility of seeing the dolphins swim right up and jump and dive right behind the boat.

This dolphin tour is on a smaller boat, and since it is a smaller group of people, that means there is a better chance of getting an awesome view of the dolphins swimming. The views of the dolphins swimming behind the boat’s wake are incredible, making this tour well worth it.

This little tug boat is also a kid-friendly option , making it an ideal choice for families looking to take their kids on a dolphin tour. This dolphin tour is an incredible way to see dolphins for kids and adults.

This tour is a fantastic choice for anyone that wants to see the dolphins swimming and jumping in the water, as the special wave created from the boat makes the perfect environment for the dolphins to swim up close in.

To summarise, Little Toot Dolphin Adventure at Clearwater Beach is the best dolphin tour from Tampa and Clearwater combined. You are guaranteed to have an amazing tour.

4. Clearwater Encounters with Dolphins Tour

A picture of a dolphin jumping through the waves with a view of Tampa in the background.

⭐ RATING: 5 out of 5 Stars (1800+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.5 hours | 🐬 BOOK NOW

Another incredibly highly rated dolphin tour is the Clearwater Encounters with Dolphins Tour with over 1800 5-star reviews. People really love their dolphin tours from Tampa and beyond!

Review which says "The kiddos had a wonderful experience seeing the dolphins and enjoying the boat ride. The island walk around was perfect for pictures and finding great shells and some treasure coins for the kiddos. Can’t wait till we do it again!"

Clearwater Encounters with Dolphins Tour is a fantastic option for those looking to see dolphins swimming up close while also spending some time on a small island in the Gulf of Mexico.

Swimming in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico is an amazing experience to have on your Florida vacation. The water is perfectly warm and clear year-round and is great for some snorkelling. Combine this with seeing dolphins and you have one of the best days of your life!

This tour will allow you a mix of both a boat ride, as well as some time on Compass Island. Compass Island is a very small island that is only accessible by boat tour. Once on the island, you will be provided snorkel gear to do some snorkelling in the Gulf of Mexico.

Don’t worry, it’s not mandatory. If you prefer, you can also explore the white sand beach for seashells. Either way, you will surely have a fantastic time on this tour.

On the boat ride to and from Compass Island, you’ll have the chance to see dolphins playing and swimming in the beautiful blue waters.

Dolphins typically swim in groups, meaning you have a good chance to see several of them at once. Make sure to have your camera ready to capture some great pictures!

For a dolphin tour that offers even more than just dolphins, check out the Clearwater Encounters with Dolphins Tour .

5. Clearwater Dolphin-Watching Tour

A picture of a dolphin jumping out of the water.

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (700+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.75 hours | 🐬 BOOK NOW

Another really solid option is the Clearwater Dolphin-Watching Tour which offers a traditional dolphin tour with lots of dolphin hotspots visited throughout the tour.

Review which says "This was a fun and beautiful tour! The dolphins were so playful and fun to watch, and viewing Clearwater from the water was amazing. Our captain and tour guide were both fantastic. All in all, it was a wonderful trip and worth the time we took out of our vacation to go. I highly recommend."

There is no better way to spend a warm, sunny Florida day than out on the water watching the dolphins! Enjoy the warm sea breeze with a drink in hand on a double-decker Catamaran ride while watching dolphins swim and play in the Gulf of Mexico on Clearwater Dolphin-Watching Tour .

Dolphins typically swim in pods of 10-30, but they can be in groups of up to 1,000 at a time. So, you will surely see plenty of dolphins on this fantastic tour. I will say though, I’m yet to hear of many people getting to see 1,000. There’s a chance though!

When I have taken dolphin tours, I usually see around 10-20 or so dolphins across the course of the tour depending on the day. I’ve been lucky enough to see dolphins every time- it’s not a guarantee because the animals are wild at the end of the day, but the chances are extremely high in this amazing part of the world.

Dolphins can be seen year-round, but if you are travelling in spring or early summer, make sure to be on the lookout for seeing baby dolphins – they are extremely cute and adorable!

In addition to seeing dolphins up close, this tour will take you around the intercoastal waterway and the Gulf of Mexico. The captain will tell you more about the popular Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins as well as point out some famous celebrity mansions that are located along the shores. Pretty cool to see I have to say.

For a simple dolphin tour where you’re as close to guaranteed to see dolphins as possible, book the Clearwater Dolphin-Watching Tour .

6. Mega Bite Dolphin Tour Boat in Clearwater Beach

A picture of a dolphin jumping out of the water.

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (250+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1 hour | 🐬 BOOK NOW

If you want a mega dolphin tour of Tampa, look no further than the aptly named Mega Bite Dolphin Tour Boat in Clearwater Beach which has quite a unique selling point.

Review which says "My family enjoyed the boat ride throught Clearwater. We got to see a couple dolphins. The boat left on time and the ride was about an hour long. Cute souvenir photo available for purchase at the end. Definitely would recommend."

That unique selling point is that the tour takes place on a boat that is decorated as a shark – the only shark in the Tampa Bay area that dolphins love to be around! There are sharks at Clearwater Beach , but don’t worry, you are very very unlikely to see one…except this boat!

This cool boat produces an interesting wave behind it that encourages dolphins to come close to the boat and jump and swim in the wave. It pretty much guarantees your chance of seeing the elegant animals in the wild.

Which makes Mega Bite Dolphin Tour Boat in Clearwater Beach one of the best ways to see dolphins up close in their natural habitat, as the wave produced by the boat is fun for them to swim in, so you have a good chance of seeing lots of dolphins flip and jump in the crystal clear water.

This tour is perfect for all ages , but kids especially may enjoy the shark-themed boat. Or adults too- who doesn’t love sharks?! The boat also has a comfortable shaded area with padded seats, making it the perfect place to sit back and relax while you watch the dolphins at play.

10. Sunset Cruise from Clearwater

A dolphin curved while jumping out of the water.

⭐ RATING: 4.5 out of 5 Stars (480+ reviews) | ⌛ TOUR LENGTH: 1.75 hours | 🐬 BOOK NOW

Last but by no means least of these dolphin tours in Tampa is the Sunset Cruise from Clearwater . It’s still very highly rated, with an average 4.5/5 rating after nearly 500 reviews. It’s insanely good for being the tour in “last” of the best tours.

dolphin tours near tampa

Looking to experience one of Tampa Bay’s incredible sunsets? If so, this tour is perfect for you. There is no better way to experience the sunset than out on the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Just like the last tour, there is also a chance of seeing dolphins on the Sunset Cruise from Clearwater as well. It’s hard to find the words to describe something so spectacular and so mesmerising.

This boat tour will be on a double-decker Catamaran, giving you incredible views of the Gulf of Mexico. It will also include a nice glass of champagne so you can relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset in the best way possible.

Once again, this tour is not specifically a dolphin tour but there is still the opportunity to see many dolphins, as the tour goes in the same area as many of the other dolphin tours. Being honest, the chance of seeing dolphins is pretty high.

The main difference with a sunset tour is that seeing dolphins isn’t the main focus of the trip, but it is an awesome bonus nonetheless. Especially if you are looking to see dolphins on a trip to Tampa.

So if you want to see dolphins while enjoying a relaxing evening out on the Gulf of Mexico, book the Sunset Cruise from Clearwater for an unforgettable experience.

This is an amazing experience that I recommend to everyone whether you're a local or tourist to do. Captain Christian and his helper McKenzie are friendly, professional, and they were highly knowledgeable about the area, dolphins, and the history of St. Pete. You are bound to see a dolphin and many more amazing views of the Tampa Bay area. This is definitely one of the top things to do in St. Pete!

Pier Dolphin Cruises Dolphin Sightseeing Tours Testimonials St. Petersburg, FL

The experience we had at Pier Dolphin Cruises couldn't have been better. The captain and his partner were very knowledgeable , they shared historical information throughout the ride. His partner attracted the dolphins with some calls to keep the dolphins coming up. There was snacks, drinks and restrooms. The captain gave us a full refund because we had missed our time . The next day we were able to get on without a hassle. Overall a great choice for sightseeing dolphins, manatees & Sting rays . Definitely recommend Especially with family if you are in the area.

Pier Dolphin Cruises Dolphin Sightseeing Tours Testimonials St. Petersburg, FL

A TAMPA/ST PETE MUST!!!! From our extremely hospitable and knowledgable crew to the special precautions taken for Covid, this cruise was well worth the comparable price! The cruise was around 2 hours and we came across a few dolphins racing against the boat at the start of our journey, a pod towards the end, and periodic sightings sprinkled throughout. We also saw manatees, stingrays, fish, and the appropriately named bird island. Our captain grew up in the area and told us interesting stories about the surroundings as we got a little tour of the beautiful homes on the water. Our first mate recently graduated after studying marine biology and gave us information about the dolphins, their calves, and answered any questions we had! The boat was COMPLETELY disinfected and they do not pack it to the brim. In fact, my group was alone in the am tour with plenty of space around the boat to walk around. Ultimately, we will be back and totally recommend for others to enjoy this beautiful boating adventure.

Dolphins only jump and play with boats that have a single hull. Do your research when booking your next Dolphin cruise.

No one covers so much coastline scouting for dolphins to jump and play in our single-hull boat wake. A great photo opportunity! Once at Egmont Key, you are free to explore this tropical island with ruins dating to the 1700's a working lighthouse, shelling where an abundance of sea shells constantly wash onshore. Then we will take you snorkeling in the clear waters of Egmont key.

We have 4 single-hull boats going out twice a day, carrying 25 people each.

Pictures/Videos are worth a thousand words! Can't wait to see yours!

Replica Watches are becoming more and more popular, and these days it’s really hard to find a very good supplier. We recommend using our partners OpClock, where you can buy Rolex Replica , Patek replica , and other big brand replica watches

Dolphins jumping next to the boat in your own private dolphin watching show. The warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and only our custom built boats have something to show you. Wild dolphins playing and having fun! No, this isn’t a theme park or an aquarium. These are dolphins doing what they love for your family to enjoy. Not just a 35 minute boat ride, a dolphin jumping, thrill of a lifetime. (Don’t believe me, watch our videos.) But wait, that’s only the beginning. Enjoy a half day experience like no other.

Ready to get wet?

Egmont Key snorkeling is particularly well suited for the novice, because the water is so frequently clear, calm, shallow, and full of life. People of all ages and experience levels will take home wonderful memories about their time in the water with us. Our tours always provide an experienced crew, the utmost discretion for safety. Our comfortable boats offer water-level entry, and in-water ladders for safely returning to the deck. All snorkelers are supervised in the water, and may come-and-go on-board as they please while at the snorkeling site feel at ease knowing your family isn’t just safe, but about to experience the time of their lives!

snorkeling

We disembark at Egmont Key State Park. Formally a haven of pirates, soldiers, and native americans. Explore the 150+ year old lighthouse. Discover Spanish-American history among war forts, gun batteries, jails, and armories. (Imagine showing your children a history lesson they will never forget.) The island’s trails snake from history to wildlife refuge to the beautiful palm tree lined secluded beaches. Play on the white sandy shoreline of this island, only accessible by boat. Collect prehistoric sharks teeth and seashells of all shapes and sizes unique to Florida’s gulf coast.

We’re not done yet! Surfs up!

Relax in the shade of our custom built boats as we scout Tampa Bay’s waters for more dolphin tales. (Once you’ve seen dolphins surf behind our boat you can’t get enough). Don’t just go on vacation, enjoy an experience that will make lifelong memories with the original and only Egmont Key snorkeling and dolphin surfing charter boat.

What People Are Saying About Passage Key Dolphin Tours

Captain Bruce provides the experience of a lifetime. The kids can’t stop talking about the dolphins – and the snorkeling! We went with a half-day private tour AM.

This is the experience you want to give your loved ones they will remember forever. Captain Bruce is extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

Booking was easy — just make sure to book early as dates fill up quickly! We went for the dolphins this time, but I think maybe a relaxing day in the sun near Passage Key with friends is a good next trip with Passage Key Tours!

Highly recommend!! Bruce was the best. We got to see dolphins and had them swim with our boat. Bruce and his wife were super friendly and held a great conversation. Very knowledgeable about the animals and the island. Great with the kids as well. Definitely worth the money.

Had the best morning exploring the island with family thanks to Captain Bruce Adamo. This was the one activity that my son requested during our stay and our time on the boat exceeded our expectations. The boat was clean and comfortably fit the six of us. I 100% recommend then, and we will absolutely be booking again in the future.

Tampa Boat Trips

One of the things Florida is well known for is its incredible coastline. Tampa is amongst the most popular destinations along the west coast of the Sunshine State, and Tampa boat tours will allow you to see the bay of Tampa (yes, there is an actual bay!) and the blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

You’ll have the best time forming romantic memories as you see the breathtaking Florida sunset from the water, enjoy an exhilarating motorboat ride as a family, or perhaps sign up for one of the boating day trips for a bachelorette party. There’s really no celebration that isn’t appropriate for a fun time on the water!

Tampa Water Taxi Celebrity Homes and Tampa Bay History Tour

If you want a relaxing tour that cruises from Tampa, where you will see celebrity homes (like Derek Jeter’s, former New York Yankees baseball player) and learn about the history of Tampa in a marine setting, book this tour .

It’s marketed as a “Tampa Celebrity Homes Boat Tour,” but the more compelling part may be its focus on Tampa’s history.

During this 1.5-hour boating adventure, you’ll get to see the city’s skyscrapers from the water, Harbour Island lighthouse, experience Davis Islands canals, and get a narrated tour. The boat leaves behind The Tampa Bay History Center, right next to downtown’s Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park.

Tickets are just under $40 per person. Bottle water is offered onboard and included in the ticket price.

Prepare for an epic ride with the Bay Rocket boat tour in Tampa. This bad boy takes you on a 45-minute joyride through the most extraordinary sights in town for a great time you’ll remember as a highlight of your time in Tampa.

You’ll zoom past the Tampa Riverwalk, the Skyway Bridge, and the downtown Tampa skyline, all while feeling the wind in your hair and the sun on your face.

But it’s not just about the thrill. Your boat captain will also fill you in on the city’s backstory and highlight all the cool stuff you don’t want to miss, including waterfront mansions and a lighthouse.

And the best part? This ride is so much fun for everyone, young and old. So, grab your whole family and hop aboard the Bay Rockets for a wicked good time on the bay.

Tickets start at $34.95

Don’t forget to bring these Florida essentials to Tampa

Cruisin tikis clearwater.

Let’s talk about the ultimate party on the water with Cruisin Tikis Clearwater Tampa boat ride. (Don’t let the company name throw you – it does, in fact, leave from Tampa and cruise Tampa’s Hillsborough River.)

This is different from your average boat ride, my friend! It is a 90-minute tiki boat tour on an octagonal “boat” with a thatched roof that is all about living your best life with your favorite people.

The tiki bar boat is fully equipped with a cooler and a sound system, so BYOB and drinks to get the party started. You’ll pass the Amelie Arena, Tampa Riverwalk, and Starz Center For the Performing Arts as you jam to your favorite tunes cruising along the pretty coastline.

This Tampa boat tour has a strict guest cap of 6 people. (Coast Guard’s rules!)

But don’t forget to take in the breathtaking views around you. You’ll be passing by some of the most iconic sights in the area, including the Clearwater Beach Marina and Caladesi Island.

Could this be one of Tampa’s most entertaining outdoor activities? We think so.

Tickets from $59.95.

Tiki Tampa Boat Tour (with a Bathroom Onboard)

If you prefer something that is a little more of a cross between a “normal” boat and a tiki boat that can fit double the passengers, check out this tiki boat . It has a 12-person capacity and also has a bathroom onboard.

Luxury Yacht Charter For the Day

Are you ready to take luxury to the next level? The Yacht Charter Tampa Bay private charter lets you experience Tampa Bay in style. This yacht is perfect for any occasion for up to 12 guests with Mahi Mike at the wheel. (And there is a restroom onboard!)

You’ll cruise on a beautiful boat with a bar, sound system, and comfortable seating. You can use the kitchen onboard, and the boat has Wifi. It’s great for a fun family day or a group of friends who want to charter a yacht. Want to rent the boat for something even more unique, like a wedding ceremony? No problem.

The tour’s highlights are undoubtedly the sunset and a chance to see playful dolphins. Then, as the sun starts to dip below the horizon, you’ll be treated to a stunning view of the bay. It’s the outstanding backdrop for a romantic date or an unforgettable celebration with your friends.

Starts at $2,500 per group.

Luxury Private Boat Charter

If you want something that is a little more low-key than a multi-deck private charter yacht, this is the Tampa boating option for you .

Leave from the Gandy Boat Ramp right on Old Tampa Bay and head south to cruise towards St. Pete. Use of snorkel equipment is included with your boat rental, there’s a restroom onboard, and it includes snacks and bottled water.

Since you’re chartering your own boat, you’re able to customize your tour. Sail during the day and pay for a full day or half day. Sail at night for a sunset half-day cruise option. A full-day tour includes 2-4 stops, and a half-day tour includes 1-2 stops. Moreover, the company (Salt Life Watersports) will pick you up at the dock nearest your Tampa vacation location.

Tampa Bay stop options include Egmont Key, Downtown Tampa and Harbour Island, Downtown St. Pete, Clearwater Beach, St. Pete Beach, John’s Pass, WTR, the Getaway, Weedon Island, the company’s “Mystery Island,” and more.

Prices start at $918 for a half-day tour.

Pirate Water Taxi

If you want an easy way to get around the waterways of Tampa as you dash around the city’s great landmarks and sites, consider buying a hop-on hop-off all-day ticket for Pirate Water Taxi Tour.

They have six boats that comprise their fleet that travel the Hillsborough River and Tampa’s waterways daily, starting at 11:30 am. You can track where the boats are on their website if you’re wondering when the next boat will come to your stop.

They have two routes – River Route and Island Route – with a total of 14 stops. Stops include Tampa’s Riverwalk, Sparkman Wharf/ Channel District, Harbour Island, Davis Islands, Armature Works , Ricks on the River, and the Florida Aquarium. Guests can transfer between routes at stop seven at the Convention Center.

Purchase a pass that allows unlimited hop on and off at various spots in Tampa all day for $34.00. You can purchase tickets onboard at any one of their route stops or save $2 by booking on their website .

Pirate Ship Boat Tour

Grab your eyepatch, hoist the Jolly Roger, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure on this Pirate Boat Tour. This unique tour lets you live out your pirate fantasies and sail the waters of the Tampa Bay area like a true buccaneer.

The ship is fully equipped with everything a pirate needs, from cannons and muskets to a fully stocked bar. And the crew? They’re all dressed up in full pirate regalia and ready to entertain you with stories, songs, and games.

The highlight of the tour is the water cannon battle, where you’ll engage in a friendly “battle” with another pirate ship. It’s an especially great experience for little ones.

The boat is also available to rent for private charters and has a variety of special event cruises each year. Keep this in mind for a Tampa Bay boat tour – we hope she’ll be out of dry dock soon so you can get your tickets.

Tampa: a guide to the overlooked city in Florida worth exploring

What to see and where to go in and around Tampa

tampa florida skyline

It’s this combination of compelling history and a new and fast-paced evolution that makes Tampa such a great place to visit. As does its role as a jumping-off point for fantastic outdoor activities on the magnificent Gulf of Mexico beaches nearby, including swimming in hot springs near manatees, kayaking and riding an airboat through the mangroves.

Tampa also has a super-modern and efficient airport that doesn’t suffer the immigration queues of Orlando and Miami (and that has an increasing number of direct flights from the UK with airlines including Virgin Atlantic ). This means that as well as coming to Tampa for a brilliant city and beach break combo, there’s the option of building on a side-trip to the world’s theme-park capital just over an hour away for the perfect three-in-one holiday.

What to see and do in Tampa

Still gritty in places (something that’s part of its charm), this fast-changing city at the heart of Florida’s Gulf Coast is centred on its modern four-kilometre Riverwalk lined by repurposed and contemporary architecture and lovely public spaces. Prominent among them is Armature Works, formerly a streetcar repair and storage barn, that's now chock-full of alluring bars and restaurants including sleek M.Bird with glittering city and river views from its rooftop.

florida, tampa, hillsborough river, water taxi

It’s also in this district, Tampa Heights, that you’ll find Ulele, a restaurant named after the Native American daughter of the chief of the Tocobaga tribe. Ulele is unique in that it serves native Floridian fare based on indigenous ingredients and incorporating Native American influences – standouts include okra fries, Barbacoa-grilled Gulf oysters, pan-seared pompano fillets, jalapeno vodka cocktails and crafts beers from its own on-site brewery.

Indeed, Tampa is an epic city for foodies, with other highlights including Goody Goody, one of America’s first drive-in restaurants now reborn as a modern diner with classic American decor and dishes such as sublime breakfasts of giant buttermilk pancakes. Goody Goody is run by the fifth-generation Gonzart family, who also own Ulele as well as Florida’s oldest restaurant, the iconic Columbia, which serves Cuban sandwiches, its famous ‘1905’ salads and plenty more besides in a vast, extravagantly tiled venue occupying a whole block in Ybor City.

tampa, florida, ybor city

Tampa’s historic Latin Quarter, Ybor City, is the real highlight of any visit here. It's famous for its lively, even often rowdy, bar and nightclub scene, but by day it’s a charming, calm spot to wander around, with Cuban artisans still hand-rolling cigars as they have since 1885 and a free-roaming wild chicken population. To make the most of it, join a guided outing with Ybor City Walking Tours and learn about how this fascinating neighbourhood became a magnet for immigrants from Cuba, Spain, Germany, Italy and Eastern Europe. Also, don’t miss a ride on the free historic wooden streetcar back from Ybor City to Downtown.

Great day-trips and overnighters from Tampa

Crystal River (75 minutes north of Tampa)

Defined by its vast bodies of water, this compact city sits on Kings Bay with its 70-plus hot springs providing a winter refuge for Florida's manatees. It’s such an important spot for the survival of these placid creatures that it’s been designated the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge – the only refuge in the USA dedicated to preserving a single species. You can swim in the hot springs near these docile creatures, using the ‘freeze and float’ method should they inquisitively approach you, with firms such as Salty Siren Tours & Charters .

Another warmly recommended local boat trip in the area is an eco airboat ride with Ozello Keys Pontoon Tours , taking you through the backcountry of the tiny islands into the Gulf of Mexico. Along the way you’ll see the fertile feeding grounds of manatees, dolphin, alligators and tropical birds, and may also snatch shoreline sightings of turtles, otters and wild boar.

crystal river and its company of manatees

Back at the hot springs, you can even earn your fins as a mermaid with family-run firm Crystal River Watersports , who teach both women and men to learn to swim like sirens, clad in fabric tails. If it sounds niche, it’s also great fun, strangely freeing (and easy) and all part of the quirky ‘Old Florida’ feel of this part of the state.

The same goes for the Mertailor’s Mermaid Aquarium Encounter , with live mermaid shows in the same place where Eric Ducharme creates silicone tails for both celebs such as Lady Gaga and everyday folk who yearn to be mermaids. You can even stay in a mermaid-and-manatee themed B&B here, the charming Crystal Blue Lagoon Bed & Breakfast right on a hot spring with manatees and dolphins swimming by.

All this fun in the water works up an appetite that you can satisfy in fantastic local restaurants such as the New Orleans–themed Seafood Seller & Cafe with its Cajun-style dishes including alligator mac and cheese, Sadie's Corner Kitchen with its homemade lobster bisques, crab salads and more, and Vintage On 5th including Deep South dishes in a renovated 1940s cottage-church.

Florida’s Adventure Coast: (1 hour north of Tampa)

As the name suggests, this is a place for more outdoor fun, and much of that takes place in hot springs. The weekend-long Sirens of the Deep Camps at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is another chance to learn to swim like a mermaid, although most people come simply to marvel at the daily mermaid shows that once drew the likes of of Elvis Presley. If that’s all a bit kooky, head out on the Weeki Wachee River in a transparent kayak or on a SUP paddle board with Get Up and Go Kayaking – preferably at sunset, which is one of the best times to see wildlife including turtles, manatees, dolphins and stingrays.

two kayaks on sandy river bank

Weeki Wachee and neighbouring Hernando Beach (not actually a beach but a network of canals) is also a fun place to go out of an evening for a feel of the authentic Florida, with great restaurants and bars such as The Lazy Lizard, with its comfort food such as fried pickles and its live music and dancing, while Neptune’s Grotto Old Florida Adventure Retreat is an eccentric place to stay.

Anna Maria Island (1 hour south of Tampa)

With few visitors from overseas, this barrier island curling out in to the Gulf of Mexico feels like a great alternative to the Florida Keys. It’s classic beach holiday territory and the perfect place to end a road trip along the west Florida coast before returning to Tampa: it has a few vintage shops to browse, but life here is all about lazing on the sand or by the pool and feasting on fantastic seafood in gorgeous venues such as The Sandbar, with its sustainable, farm-to-fork ethos and glorious sunset views, and The Rod and Reel Pier perched out over the water, with incredibly good-value classics.

aerial view of anna maria island, white sand beaches and blue water

That said, don’t miss a nosey around Bradenton , of which Anna Maria is a part. The mainland capital of Manatee County, Bradenton has lots to detain you, including The Bishop Museum of Science & Nature with its manatee rehabilitation centre, its own Riverwalk, the Robinson Preserve with its rare wildlife including roseate spoonbills, wood storks, white pelicans and bald eagles, and the Village of the Arts live-work community of brightly painted historic cottages housing award-winning restaurants, boutiques, at galleries and studios, and healing arts centres.

Where to stay in and around Tampa

Part of Marriott’s luxury JW brand, JW Marriott Water Street is an exceptional hotel with lot of outdoor space including a pool with city views. Rooms are airy and modern and there’s a spa and two restaurants with locally inspired dishes.

a pool in a city

Plantation on Crystal River is a 27-hole championship golf course, four restaurants, an outdoor lagoon pool and a spa make this expansive resort a fun bet, as does its setting on a bay visited by more than 400 manatees a year.

Anna Maria Beach Resort , with its own gate onto the white-sand beach and sunset views, is an intimate, upmarket option combining motel-style architecture with cocooning rooms and suites and a sparkling pool ringed by lounges and cabanas for hire.
