Fleet and availability

Rental car rates, loyalty program, credit cards with built-in rental car insurance, so, which is best.

Renting a car during your travels can be expensive and stressful, but it doesn't have to be. Different car rental companies offer different experiences for renters, so it pays to be thoughtful before selecting a brand.

If you’re trying to decide between booking an Alamo versus Enterprise car rental, know that both are owned by the same parent company, Enterprise Holdings. Even so, differences abound; we’ll break down which company has the best vehicle availability, rental rates, service and loyalty program to help you make the right choice.

» Learn more: What is the best car rental company?

Winner: Enterprise

Considering numbers alone, Enterprise is the top dog. It has far more locations, especially in the U.S., both on-airport and off.

» Learn more: Is car rental at the airport cheaper?

Enterprise has over 250 airport locations in most major cities across the U.S., which makes the rental company an easy choice when renting a car in conjunction with air travel.

Enterprise also has more than 9,500 rental offices in nearly 100 countries and territories, including Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and the U.K.

Its fleet offers not just cars, trucks and SUVs, but exotic vehicles and 12- and 15-passenger vans, too.

A much smaller operation than Enterprise, Alamo operates 1,100 locations worldwide, including 336 locations in North America, though most are at airports.

Alamo gets a slight edge in terms of its international footprint. In Europe, Alamo has locations in 40 countries, while Enterprise is in 36. In Asia, Alamo is in eight countries, while Enterprise is in nine. And in Africa and the Middle East, Alamo has locations in 11 countries, while Enterprise is in 10 countries.

Alamo has just as many vehicle classes as Enterprise, ranging from four-wheel-drive vehicles to compact cars, SUVs to 15-passenger vans.

» Learn more: How to avoid long lines at rental car counters

Winner: Alamo

While prices for optional add-ons (like car seats and Sirius XM) and taxes and fees are practically identical, and while both companies offer unlimited mileage, Alamo typically charges less. Rates are typically a few dollars less per day, which can add up on a longer trip.

In one sample search for a car rental in Las Vegas, it was significantly less to rent from Enterprise off-airport than from Alamo’s only area location on-airport. So if you have the option, check off-airport locations for big potential savings.

Across the board, from multi-day rentals to overnight rentals in cities big and small, Enterprise tends to be a few dollars more expensive per day for just about any vehicle, except occasionally when comparing off-airport prices to Alamo’s on-airport prices.

Alamo is often cheaper than Enterprise, usually by a few dollars a day, which can add up for longer rentals.

Sometimes the savings can be even more significant. At least one sample off-airport search resulted showed a week-long rental in Boston cost $458.76 for a luxury car from Alamo versus $759.99 for an economy car from Enterprise.

» Learn more: Which rental car company usually has the lowest prices?

Besides ranking No. 1 for the third year in a row in the J.D. Power 2023 North America Rental Car Satisfaction Study, Enterprise also offers free pickup if you rent from non-airport locations.

As long as you rent from non-airport locations, Enterprise offers free pickups if you don’t have a way to get to the rental office. A team member will pick you up, deliver you to the rental location and then you can pick up your car and be on your way.

The company also offers separate and dedicated customer service lines for reservations, general questions and roadside assistance so you can get in touch with the right person sooner.

Alamo isn’t far behind Enterprise when it comes to customer satisfaction, ranking third in the J.D. Power satisfaction study (scoring 862 points to Enterprise’s 866).

Service may vary by location, but there are dedicated and separate numbers to call if you need help with reservations, roadside assistance, general questions or if you have a disability.

» Learn more: The best travel credit cards right now

If you’re considering a rental based on the potential to earn loyalty points and status or have status from another rental company matched, choose Enterprise.

Alamo doesn’t have a traditional loyalty program or elite tiers, though for those who don’t rent often, the ability to earn hotel points and airline miles with Alamo may be more enticing.

Enterprise Plus

Enterprise’s loyalty program is called Enterprise Plus , and it’s simple to earn points and status: For every dollar you spend with Enterprise or its partner National Car Rental, you earn a point. Those points can then be redeemed for free rental days.

You can also obtain elite status via rental activity, and the company offers a status match program. There are four tiers:

Plus: This is the base level, which you’ll remain in until you exceed five rentals. It’s free to sign up, and you’ll earn 1 point for every rental.

Silver: You’ll qualify when you make between six and 11 rentals, plus get one free vehicle upgrade per year and earn 10% more points on every rental.

Gold: After 12 rentals or 40 days of rentals, you’ll earn a 15% bonus on points and two free upgrades per year.

Platinum: After 24 rentals or 85 days of rentals, Platinum members get a 20% points bonus on rentals and four free vehicle upgrades every year.

To keep points active, you do have to rent a car at least once every three years. As a member. you’ll get access to a dedicated phone number for faster customer service.

» Learn more: The complete guide to Enterprise Plus

Alamo Insiders program

While Alamo does operate the Alamo Insiders program, it’s not a traditional loyalty program. Instead, it is a way to receive email deals and a 5% discount on reservations in which you choose the “Pay later” option than earn loyalty points or status.

alamo ranch travel

That said, Alamo does let you earn airline miles or hotel points for every booking if you add your preferred frequent traveler number when you book.

The number of points and miles earned depends on what loyalty program you link, but some popular ones include:

Alaska Mileage Plan: 50 miles per rental day.

American Airlines AAdvantage: 50 miles per rental day.

Delta SkyMiles: 2 miles per dollar.

Frontier Miles: Up to 500 miles per rental.

Southwest Rapid Rewards: 600 points per rental.

Hilton Honors: 500 points per rental.

Best Western Rewards: 3 points per dollar.

Don’t forget that there are many credit cards that come with complimentary car rental elite status perks just by linking your accounts.

Save money at the counter by booking with a credit card that includes rental car coverage in its travel benefits. Just be sure to decline the coverage pitched to you by Enterprise or Alamo.

When it comes to Enterprise versus Alamo, Enterprise emerges victorious regarding its impressive number of locations, service and loyalty program. But that doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone.

After all, in most cases, Alamo was cheaper, plus those who don’t rent often and aren’t concerned with status may prefer Alamo for its ability to earn airline miles or hotel points with every booking.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

alamo ranch travel

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

alamo ranch travel

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

alamo ranch travel

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

alamo ranch travel

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

alamo ranch travel

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

alamo ranch travel

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

alamo ranch travel

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Founder of Tejano settlement was known for a life of adventure

Policarpio ‘polly’ rodriguez went from rugged frontiersman to preacher.

Jessie Degollado , Reporter

Ken Huizar , Photojournalist

POLLY, Texas – The chapel, a schoolhouse and a family cemetery are all that remain of Polly, Texas, southeast of Bandera, a settlement of about 30 Tejano pioneers and their families founded in the mid-1850′s by Policarpio “Polly” Rodriguez.

Yet by then, Rudi Rodriguez, a San Antonio businessman, said his ancestor had led a life of adventure as a rugged frontiersman in what was then the wild frontier of the Texas Hill Country.

“He was larger than life,” Rodriguez said.

Growing up watching TV westerns, Rodriguez said, compared to Polly, “Roy Rogers didn’t cut it.”

If anything, Rodriguez said Polly was more like James Bowie, Davy Crockett and Kit Carson, “rolled into one.”

He said Polly’s father and grandfather were frontiersmen as well in the Mexican state of Coahuila.

Yet, he said Polly was much more than an Army scout and guide known for taking on mountain lions, bears and hostile Indians.

Rodriguez said Polly went on to become a justice of the peace, a county judge, county commissioner, surveyor, rancher, and a Texas Ranger.

He said it was during his time in Camp Verde helping oversee the U.S Army’s Great Camel Experiment that Polly’s life took a different turn.

When some of the camels took off, Rodriguez said Polly used his tracking skills to find them along a creek.

But Polly also saw lush native grasses for foraging and grazing and an abundant source of water.

“For him it was paradise,” Rodriguez said. “He was determined to purchase some of it and begin his ranch.”

In all, he said Polly acquired 4,000 acres, part of which became the first Tejano pioneer settlement in the Texas Hill Country.

Many of those early ranching families, he said, were among the Tejanos who no longer felt comfortable living in San Antonio after the fall of the Alamo.

The most distinctive feature out there is Polly’s Peak, the tallest in Bandera County.

Although Polly, Texas, thrived for a time, Rodriguez said by the end of the 19th century, subsistence farming in small rural communities became harder and harder.

He said with the advent of the Industrial Revolution, manufacturing and service industries began to grow in San Antonio.

Rodriguez said the jobs they offered “provided a magnet to persons in small towns to seek out their futures.”

World War II also drafted young men and women to work, he said, spelling the beginning of the end for small towns like Polly.

But there is still an active Polly Texas Pioneer Association .

As for Polly himself, Rodriguez said during the last half of Polly’s life, “The word of the Lord came to him. He has an epiphany.”

He said Polly left the Catholic faith and became a Methodist, and eventually a circuit preacher going from town to town.

After that, Rodriguez said Polly met and married his second wife, a much younger woman who gave him four sons.

Yet in 1914 at the age of 85, the man who had braved harsh environments in his early life died of pneumonia.

Rodriguez said Polly was unprepared for a blue norther while taking coats and blankets to a family with none.

He said that speaks to who Polly Rodriguez was, as described on his headstone, “By nature, strong, fearless, daring, by grace an apostle to his people.”

His descendant said he believes Polly’s spirit has fueled his love of Tejano history. Rodriguez is the founder of TexasTejano.com , and he was instrumental in Tejano Moments , a series of historical vignettes, with KSAT reporter Erica Hernandez. Both were recently honored by the Texas Historical Commission.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
