What a wonderful experience we have had on our “Cotswolds, Castles & Cottages” Tour. Our visit to Sudeley Castle was delightful, Hailes Abbey and it’s historical story was made most interesting by having the portable audio commentary provided by English Heritage, and Chedworth Roman Villa is fascinating to visit. To be in the English Cotswolds countryside is an opportunity which we have been so lucky to have had. It was a delight to walk amongst all these ancient thatched cottages. As our Tour Leader had already told us, the Cotswold Cottages are beautifully preserved and it has been awesome to be able to enjoy being amongst them with their magnificent English gardens full of the perfume of their beautiful Roses and their unbelievable colours, and together with all the awesome varieties of English flowers in these gardens, was admired by us all our cameras have recorded amazing memories.

HIKING TOURS IN ENGLAND

Hiking in england conjures up memories of abandoned seaside castles, rolling fields filled with lambs, and clusters of thatch-roofed houses. nothing about the english countryside could be more charming.  .

While the historic pathways that follow the Cornish coast of Cornwall and wind through the Cotswolds pass through innumerable historic locations including Roman-era Christian churches, it is often the little things that become treasured   memories of England: lanes of huge oak trees, tea in a local bakery, or a covered bridge over a forest stream. Whatever the image, these memories all bring with them a sense of peace unique to the English countryside .

Ryder-Walker features two trips in England – the Cornish Coastal Path in Cornwall and The Cotswolds . We also offer a self-guided variation of the Cotswold Way . Both of these hiking routes follow historic public pathways that have been protected and enshrined in English law since the 1600s.

Wherever you are hiking in England there is a bounty of interesting and historic sights to enjoy on your journey. Strolling past a famous witches hut, a haunted hotel, and a Roman bridge isn’t an odd afternoon at all in the Cotswolds . Visiting a castle or a tin mine in Cornwall is always an adventure

Cornwall is the most southwesterly county in Great Britten and the Cornish Coastal Path follows the dramatic Atlantic coastline , taking you to wave-battered cliffsides and seaside fishing villages. The Cotswolds trail represents a fairy tale route that winds through the famous Cotswold Hills, considered by many to be the most beautiful and charming section of England..

Meanwhile, the English countryside is dotted with a plethora of charming local farms , where you can meet entire packs of lambs which play in large open pastures. From these local farms comes an excellent farm-to-table cuisine that balks the English tradition of less exciting cuisine, offering delicious cuts of meat, pies, locally baked bread, and locally sourced fruits and vegetables. The coastline offers delicious seafood, locally sourced produce and wonderful cheeses, pastries and their famous cream tea.

The history on display in England is second to none. The end of the Cotswold Way, for instance, is in the historic city of Bath. Bath is famous for its architectural innovation of the curving apartment block, which maps the city into a maze of stunning historic apartments that twist around each other rarely meeting at right angles. In the city’s center are the Roman baths themselves, complete with a museum and a nearby teahouse.

If you are looking for a seaside adventure, countryside ramble or a historic trek, England is an excellent option. The local bed and breakfasts are the most charming in the world, contrasted with royal hotels that have been in operation for hundreds of years. The hiking in the Cotswolds meanders between forested hillsides and farmland, while the countryside of Cornwall crashes into the rocky English beaches and precipitous coastline .

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

This is a great hiking trip and a wonderful way to experience England outside the big cities. The scenery is varied enough to keep it interesting, and we fell in love with hiking in the Lake District.
This was an exceedingly well-designed and well-led trip. It is obvious that the leaders are constantly evaluating the quality of their product and modifying it as needed to offer the best experience possible.
This was a wonderful trip! The countryside was magnificent, the walks well planned, and things ran smoothly. Richard’s passion for good food made meals a special treat, and Karen’s encyclopedic knowledge of plants and history added to each walk. This was my first Wilderness Travel walk. I loved it and will be back.
This was a brilliantly designed trip. Spending ten days in the beautiful and wild English countryside was a rare treat, made easy by the expert guidance of our trip leaders. One of the best things about this kind of travel is being able to be away from it all without worrying about being lost, stranded, etc. I completely enjoyed every day of the trip.
This was my first trip with Wilderness Travel and don’t think I could have enjoyed it more. The guides and itinerary were delightful from start to finish.
This creatively designed trip provided a wonderful balance of understated luxury, spectacular scenic beauty, and diverse historical perspective in an area of the UK that I had long wanted to visit. Thanks, WT!
A well-designed and executed trip! The hotels were unique, comfortable and fun; our Trip Leader handled every detail flawlessly (and did it all with good humor)! Hiking is emphasized in the written materials, but the other jewels are discovered when learning the history of the area with local guides, who added layers of information and perspective that truly enhanced our experience.

Our guided walking tours in the UK aren’t just about stunning natural landscapes... We’ll also show you the best of Britain’s cities on foot. All you need to know about British Walking Tours

What are walking tours.

A walking tour takes you around a city, park, historical site, or any attraction, on foot. Whether you stroll down cobblestone streets, wander ancient ruins or hike through a forest, you’ll get an intimate look at the local landscapes and culture on a walking tour. Even better, you’ll get some exercise in the fresh air while appreciating the close-up details that are often missed when you whizz by in a car.

Is Windsor Castle worth visiting?

As the world’s largest and oldest occupied castle, Windsor Castle is definitely worth visiting. With almost 1,000 years of history starting with William the Conqueror, the castle is now one of the Queen’s grand homes. We’ll take you to see the castle’s elegant State Apartments with intricate ceilings, artworks and Queen Mary’s Doll House, and St. George’s Chapel where Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle.

What palaces can you visit in London?

While Buckingham Palace is the most iconic palace in London, there are a few more that are well worth a trip. Be sure to check out the famous Kensington Palace, the Kew Palace and stunning Kew Gardens, the regal Hampton Court Palace, and the historic Palace of Westminster. And don’t forget the Tower of London, officially known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London.

When should I go to Ireland and Scotland?

If you’re looking for the best things to do in the United Kingdom, you can’t miss the highlights of Northern Ireland and Scotland. See the iconic cities like Belfast, Glasgow and Edinburgh, then discover the spectacular landscapes. Marvel at the Giant’s Causeway, cross to the Isle of Skye, and explore the untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands. And that’s just scratching the surface!

Ramblers Walking Tours

England's  Lake District: Inn to Inn

Walk through the heart of the Lake District, with lodging along the way at some of the Lake District's most delightful country hotels and inns. Experience ever-changing spectacular views of fields, moors, woodlands and mountains.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

  • Scenic guided hikes with talks by Lakeland experts
  • A cruise across Coniston Water
  • A visit to Brantwood- home of the poet, artist and social reformer, John Ruskin
  • Views of Beatrix Potter's Hilltop Farm
  • The sheer beauty of Tarn Hows with its thick conifers, clear lake and picturesque views
  • Ancient Roman ruins- a bath house and a fort
  • The World Owl Center- home to a diverse collection of thrilling birds of prey, the largest in existence
  • The same splendid views of Grasmere that inspired Wordsworth's poetry

Each day, we guide you on a robust walk across vales and hills. We walk 4 to 9 miles per day with ascents of 600 to 1400 feet (you may also opt for only a half day of hiking). Sightseeing by minibus rounds out an appreciation of Lake District history and culture.

What your day will look like

Day 1

Arrive at our first hotel in Grange-over-Sands, where lunch is available, if required (at own expense). In the afternoon we drive to the medieval village of Cartmel with its imposing 12th-Century Priory church and on the way back take a short walk along the bay promenade. A tea reception and orientation meeting is followed by our Welcome Dinner. (D)

The hotel is located next to the train station in Grange-over-Sands. You can take the train from Manchester Airport to Grange-over-Sands for your arrival. Should you require a pre night, please let us know.

Day 2

Walk through delightful limestone woodlands and up grassy slopes to the top of Hampsfell escarpment to enjoy the spectacular views across Morecambe Bay and towards the Lakeland mountains. In the afternoon, follow country byways through the gentle Cartmel Valley and Bigland Estate to our next inn at Newby Bridge. (B, L, D) 9 Miles

Day 3

This walk includes a delightful variety of countryside, with ever-changing views. Woodland, green fields and a moorland ridge bring us to our lunch point in the peaceful Rusland valley. Then an enchanting walk across heather-clad Bethecar Moor, until Coniston Water opens up below. Drive in our minibus to reach the next inn by the shore of Coniston Water, where two nights are spent. (B, L, D) 10 Miles

Day 4

We enjoy a short cruise across Coniston Water to Brantwood, home of the poet, artitst, and social reformer, John Ruskin. Then choose between a walk up the Coppermines Valley to absorb the spectacular scenery (and a fascinating insight into an industry which supported the local economy for over 300 years) or sightseeing in Hawkshead and Sawrey, where Beatrix Potter’s Hilltop Farm is situated.  (B, L, D)  4 Miles/Optional

Day 5

Leave Coniston for a ramble over lush green rises to Tarn Hows, a jewel-like lake built by a Victorian landowner to enhance the view. Walk up the Tilberthwaite Valley, with an optional diversion to Holme Fell to admire the incomparable views in all directions. The next three nights' accomodation will be in either a traditional Lakeland Inn in Little Langdale, or a delightful country guest house, superbly encircled by nearby Lakeland hills. (B, L, D) 8 Miles

Day 6

We motor along England’s steepest road across spectacular Wrynose and Hardknott Passes, stopping to tour a 2nd-century Roman fort. Continue to the tiny village of Boot, and visit Eskdale Corn Mill, where packed lunches may be eaten, or a visit to a nearby pub in case of bad weather. There is time to enjoy the atmosphere of the wonderful Lakeland village of Boot, before rejoining the minibus for the drive to the Irish Sea coast at Ravenglass, and a walk through rolling pastures, past the ruins of a Roman Bath House, for a visit to medieval Muncaster Castle and its world-famous Owl Centre.(B, L, D) 2 1/2 Miles

Day 7

Walk by Elterwater and follow in Wordsworth’s footsteps along Loughrigg Terrace for a superb view of Grasmere Lake and vale, the inspiration for many of his great poems. We arrive at the village of Rydal, which Wordsworth made his home for the final 37 years of his life. After lunch in a traditional “tearoom” we visit Rydal Mount, the poet’s home and its gardens, which were lovingly landscaped by the poet during his time there. In the afternoon we walk along the valley side to Dove Cottage in Grasmere, Wordsworth’s home during his nine most productive years as a poet, and visit the cottage and nearby museum (a visit to Grasmere village can be arranged instead of this final walk). Return to our accommodation for the final night, and our Farewell dinner.

(B, L, D) 7 Miles

Day 8

Departure after breakfast. To depart from the tour, you can take a taxi from the hotel to the train station in Windermere or you can hire a private transfer back to the airport in Manchester. Should you require additonal nights, please let us know. We can also arrange for an extension in Grasmere should you want to spend more time in the beautiful Lake District. (B)

Guided Walking Holidays

Beginning the Coast to Coast walk along the green cliffs of England | Tim Charody

A guided walking holiday is ideal for travellers who prefer the camaraderie of like-minded walkers from around the world and appreciate the local knowledge shared by expert local guides.

Your walking guide is with you from the time your walking holiday commences until it concludes. They work tirelessly to tailor the trip to your interests while also ensuring your holiday runs smoothly for the whole group. Their passion for their country, or the region you are walking through, helps bring to life the flora, fauna and history of their homelands.

Depending on the chosen trip, group sizes generally vary from 6 to 22 people, and somewhat larger on boat based departures. On a guided walking tour in the UK and Europe, travelling in a small group does not mean your experience is tied to the rest of the group. There is time to go off exploring on your own.

On a guided walking tour you’ll share memories and laughs with travellers around the world who also appreciate the benefits of exploring the UK and Europe by foot.

The sea wall path at Teignmouth, Devon.

‘You can walk virtually everywhere in England by using the train’: the man connecting rail-based walks

A new website aims to offer a wide network of walking routes from British train stations, and is calling on hikers to add their favourites. Our writer accompanies the founder on a ramble to Bath Spa station

A British railway station can be many things. A place of tended flowers and toytown paintwork. A concourse of shuttered ticket booths and overpriced pasties. A terminus, a meeting spot, a gateway to escape. It can be heart-lifting or drab, bathed in birdsong or heaving with commuters. It can also be the starting point for a properly good walk.

National Rail serves 2,593 stations, their locations scattered across the map like cartographic confetti. Many of them sit directly on longstanding hiking trails or within a short distance of paths worth exploring. In a large number of cases, it’s possible to walk between two stations following rights of way, rendering a car or taxi redundant.

Steve Melia in countryside on a footpath, leaning on a gate

Such routes are frequently scenic but often little-known, giving value to the prospect of a dedicated database of station-to-station walks. Might a disembarkation at Ffairfach, Whatstandwell or Crianlarich be the passport to your next hike? Quite possibly – which is where the recently launched Railwalks.co.uk comes in. Its aim is to create a crowd-sourced national network of rail-based walking routes, mostly ranging from two to 20 miles.

“If you’d asked me 20 years ago how much of Britain you could walk through while using public transport, I would have imagined, like everyone else, not very much,” says founder Steve Melia, an academic, author and one-time Lib Dem parliamentary candidate who gave up flying in 2005 and driving in 2009. “I discovered that that’s not true. You can walk virtually everywhere in England by train – and bus, but mainly trains – and a lot of Wales and Scotland.”

I meet Steve near the station in the Wiltshire town of Bradford-on-Avon, from where we’re taking a nine-mile countryside walk to Bath Spa station. It’s one of the first truly fine days of spring, a breezeless morning of sunshine and plum blossom. Twenty four hours earlier we’d have got drenched, but today the skies are blue, the blackbirds are fluting and the dandelions are blinding. We head to the banks of the Kennet & Avon canal, bear west and begin.

The River Avon at Avoncliff.

Steve first had the idea for the website, which was unveiled in January in partnership with like-minded walking organisation Slow Ways , when he moved to Bristol in 2009 to teach transport and planning at the University of the West of England. “I started doing public transport-based walks each weekend,” he says, as the canal path leads us past narrowboats and banks of forget-me-nots. Waggy-tailed terriers zigzag the other way. “I like to walk somewhere different every time I go out, and the fact I was able to do that for 15 years and still find new routes made me think there was more to this than people realise.”

Soon we reach a path across open fields. A herd of friesian cows graze in the middle distance. The route we’re following is one of many that Steve has plotted (he’s a fan of poring over paper maps) then uploaded online as a GPX file ( which can be found here ). He’s one of four volunteers managing Railwalks, an umbrella website that has gathered together relevant regional webpages listing local rail-based hikes. These include a wide variety of sources (with a varying level of detail) from walking and community groups to local authorities and individuals such as Steve. His collection of walks near Bristol ( greentravelwriter.co.uk/rail ) sit alongside other day-walk itineraries everywhere from the South Downs to the Scottish Highlands.

The route took in the towpath of the Kennet & Avon Canal.

This, however, is just the beginning. By partnering with Slow Ways – which is midway through creating a web of walking routes that connect all Britain’s towns, cities and national parks – Railwalks aims to eventually offer a comprehensive, searchable, national network of rail walks, a mixture of station-to-station routes and circular hikes. And like Slow Ways itself, it needs your help.

“We’re asking people to add new walks,” says Steve. This involves signing up to Slow Ways via the Railwalks website or, for those already registered with Slow Ways, adjusting their profile settings to incorporate Railwalks (instructions for both options can be found at railwalks.co.uk/how-to-help ). “The idea is that our network will eventually go into a separate section of the Slow Ways site,” says Steve.

The concept at its core is admirable. Few pleasures are more simple than cross-country rambling with a trail at your feet and hours at your disposal. Our route to Bath winds up and down across the hills. We pass through pretty limestone villages with old-world names – Avoncliff, Limpley Stoke, Monkton Combe – and stop at the 16th-century Inn at Freshford for liquid sustenance. On the trail, wrens trill and the scent of wild garlic hangs on the woodland verges.

Steve acknowledges that relying solely on trains can pose problems for hikers – not least the cost – but he and his fellow volunteers are passionate about spreading the word that rail-based walks aren’t only feasible but can also be deeply enjoyable.

Now in his early 60s, Steve goes walking at every opportunity. As we descend towards Bath down a long green meadow, the city’s Georgian crescents glinting in the afternoon sun, I notice his boots. They look as if they’re carrying the dust of a decade-long pilgrimage and I mention the fact. “What, these?” he laughs. “I only got them a few months ago.”

Three more station-to-station walks on railwalks.co.uk

Torquay to Teignmouth , Devon Distance: about 12 miles. Tracing a section of the South West Coast Path along a scenic stretch of the Devon coastline.

Cynghordy to Llandovery , Carmarthenshire Distance: about 7 miles. An undulating route between two stations on the Heart of Wales line, finishing in the market town of Llandovery.

Bempton to Filey , Yorkshire coast Distance: about 10 miles. A clifftop walk along the North Yorkshire Coast, with the chance to spot breeding seabirds on Bempton Cliffs in spring.

Or, take a tour of the pretty art galleries in town, such as Deborah Randall Fine Art.

Nearby, visitors can also check out Kennebunk, a nearby seaside town usually confused with Kennebunkport. The towns are separated by just a bridge, two rivers, and a distance of five miles. In Kennubunk, the Maine Art Hill gallery stuns cultural travelers, while outdoor lovers go for a beach walk at Mother's Beach and Gooch's Beach.

Ogunquit, Maine

Boats along Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Maine.

Ogunquit is a cute resort town of about 1,500 people, whose name comes from the Abenaki people’s word for “a beautiful place by the sea.” The white sands of Ogunquit Beach are one of the many reasons why it ranked on Trip Advisor’s top 10 US beaches in 2023. The beach boasts 3.5 miles of soft sand and is an ideal destination for families. Footbridge Beach is another beautiful beach in town with a motel for anyone who wants to stay the night.

Further inland, one can enjoy an array of seafood meals at the different restaurants in town, such as Footbridge Lobster, Jonathan's Restaurant, which doubles as a concert center, Barnacle Billy's, and the Front Porch Piano Bar & Restaurant. Meanwhile, for entertainment after the meal, stop by The Leavitt Theatre for movies and live shows or watch fall art exhibits at Barn Gallery.

Stowe, Vermont

Aerial view of town and forests in Stowe, Vermont.

Stowe is a natural environment with clean air, mountains, and a festive community. The town has a land area of over 70 square miles, one of the largest in Vermont . To this end, Stowe is a great place to be all year round, with plenty of natural areas to explore. During summer, visitors love to camp at Smugglers' Notch State Park Campground solo or with loved ones. Hiking, biking, and driving are also popular activities, and one can choose from Bingham Falls for waterfalls and gorges, Moss Glen Falls for a scenic drive, and Stowe Pinnacle for challenging trails. Those who brave the Stowe Pinnacle are in for a treat, as the view at the peak is worth the challenge.

During winter, the activities change, and most people visit the Gondola Skyride ski resort, which offers the opportunity to ride and see the peak of the highest mountain in Stowe, Mount Mansfield. Alongside Spruce Peak, this mountain surrounds Stowe Mountain Resort, which gives access to great views, rooms, and a steakhouse when you visit. After the outdoor fun, one can gulp down lager beers with friends and locals at von Trapp Brewery & Bierhall, Stowe Cider, or take a tour of the beautiful beer garden at The Alchemist Brewery.

Williamstown, Massachusetts

Buildings in Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Williamstown, formerly called West Hoosac, was incorporated as a town in 1765. It was named Williamstown for Ephraim Williams, who gave the town a large amount of money to be named after him and to establish a free school. Williams eventually lost his life in the French and Indian War, but his legacy lives on through the town and the founding of Williams College, a private art school, in 1793. Visitors can attend exhibits in the school’s affiliated Art Museum near Clark Art Institute, a research and art school.

Those looking for an outdoor experience can take a walk along the Taconic Trail State Park, where flora and fauna are abundant. They can also check out Sheep Hill, the expansive farm and greenery that leads to Mt. Greylock. Mystic, Connecticut

A sailboat along the coast in Mystic, Connecticut.

While Mystic might sound like a name for something mysterious or deep, the name of this town begs to differ. Mystic is a village between Groton and Stonington, given its name by the Pequot Native Americans. The name of the town means “a large river whose waters are driven into waves.” Visitors can explore these waves through a sunset cruise with Argia Mystic Cruises, showcasing islands and lighthouses. Other great options are the Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport Museum, where various marine animals and maritime adventures are waiting to charm. Or, head into town to shop at Olde Mistick Village and enjoy sumptuous pizza at Mystic Pizza. Every Wednesday we get Michelin chefs, top bloggers or critics to pick their favourite Cheap Eats where they live and at home. This week we speak to one of the most renowned chefs in the UK, Galton Blackiston of the Michelin-starred Morston Hall in Norfolk.

He's gone the extra mile in his Cheap Eats at home - uploading a how-to video to Instagram.

Hi  Galton, c an you tell us your favourite places in Norfolk where you can get a meal for two for less than £40?

Allium in Downham market , a family run restaurant which involves mum, dad, Joe in kitchen and James front of house. Open Wednesday through to Sunday, it has a great vibe on a Saturday evening and great food.

Bure river restaurant , a tiny restaurant on the broads in Horning cooking lovely fish dishes.

Final cheap place is the Parlour in Binham , where they have a great restaurant and you put money into an honesty box for their local cheese from the village and raw milk from their farm - a great place to visit in Norfolk.

What's your go-to cheap meal at home?

Toad in the hole with a baked potato and hispi cabbage and onion gravy.

A good tip I would say is to colour off the sausages in dripping then pour over the batter, which should be eight eggs, 250g plain flour, one pint of full fat milk, salt pepper and nutmeg. Whisk together and allow to sit for an hour til you use.

And this is how you do the hispi cabbage with cling film over the pan...

Flight prices often rocket in the summer, but it turns out particular dates can prove cheaper.

Research by Expedia has revealed the best dates to book your trips...

The cheapest times to fly

If you're flying domestic, the best dates for your wallet are 28 July, 19 August and 23 August.

Expedia also recommends booking your domestic flights on a Wednesday to save roughly 20%.

For those travelling internationally, the cheapest dates are 2 and 13 June, and 28 August.

When it comes to booking, you can save about 15% if you book on a Thursday versus at the weekend.

The quietest times to fly

If you care more about a quieter airport, the least busy dates for flying domestic are 10 June, and 11 and 19 July.

For international flights, the best dates are 4 June, and 27 and 30 August.

And the dates to avoid...

The most expensive domestic flights are on 30 June, and 8 and 16 July.

International flights are pricier on 22, 23 and 29 July.

Meanwhile, Expedia says 30 June and 24 July will be the busiest air travel days for domestic and international destinations.

Domestic flights are busiest on 30 June, and 8 and 16 July.

For international flights, 10, 21 and 24 June are the busiest.

The advertising watchdog has banned a Premier Inn ad for misleading claims about room prices.

A paid-for search ad for the hotel chain, seen on 4 November, had stated: "Premier Inn Edinburgh - rooms from only £35 per night."

It was referred to the advertising watchdog after a reader complained they couldn't find any rooms at the advertised price.

Whitbread Group, trading as Premier Inn, provided the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) with data showing there were a total of 377 rooms on offer for £35 in Edinburgh within the 365-day booking window.

But the ASA said customers would understand the ad to mean a significant proportion of rooms available would be £35.

Taxpayers will be forced to cover £85bn of losses made by the Bank of England on its quantitative easing programme, estimates suggest.

The £895bn bond-buying scheme was carried out between 2009 and 2021, and had aimed to support the UK during economic shocks - but it has been blamed by some for allowing inflation to take root.

Recent chancellors have agreed to indemnify the Bank against any losses on the scheme - meaning the taxpayer will be paying for them.

Greene King is moving from its 200-year-old brewery in Bury St Edmunds.

The pub chain will be opening a new £40m facility in a town that will produce more modern, fizzy craft beers alongside its traditional cask ales.

The majority of Greene King's brewing will be moved to the new site, as part of a wider shift away from traditional cask beers.

It will take about three years to complete.

Butlin's has launched legal action against its insurance company Aviva over who foots a £60m bill.

The holiday park operator's Minehead resort was forced to close in September 2023 because of flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

It has said the incident cost the business £60m and has filed a claim at the High Court against Aviva for not covering the entire bill.

In legal documents seen by  The Telegraph , Butlins have questioned the definition of a "storm" and argued that a "named storm" had not been declared when the flooding happened.

Oil traders working for the US firm Exxon Mobil Corp in Brussels could lose their job if they refuse to move to London, according to reports.

Under the new proposal employees moving to the UK capital would be expected to be in the office five days a week.

But traders working for the oil giant said in an internal union-led survey they did not want to move to London due to "uncompetitive" pay and a "lack of flexibility", a union statement reads, according to  Bloomberg .

Up to 37 trading employees now face having their contracts terminated as a result of this.

ExxonMobil has said it "remains open to resolving the situation".

The sports retailer is introducing tagging sprays across its stores nationwide as part of a ramping up of security measures.

It will start using SelectaDNA sprays, which can be misted on property and criminals.

The sprays work by leaving a synthetic DNA and UV marker which does not wash off and can be used to link assets to owners and criminals to crime scenes.

JD Sports said the measure was in response to a significant increase in shoplifting in UK.

In particular, it said it had seen a rise in "steaming" - where large gangs run into stores, threaten staff with violence and then run off with armfuls of stolen products.

The SelectaDNA spray reportedly does not cause any harm or damage to skin, clothing or property.

Lidl plans to open hundreds more supermarkets across Britain.

The German discount chain, which is now the UK's sixth biggest supermarket, is targeting thousands of new shoppers as it continues its expansion.

It currently has about 960 stores but is targeting more than 1,100 across England, Wales and Scotland.

In the coming months, the chain will welcome shoppers to new stores across the country, from Bristol, Birmingham and Berwick in Scotland.

In London, it will be opening new stores in Wandsworth, Fulham, Hoxton and Canning Town.

But it says it is eyeing growth in more locations. If it successfully finds a good location, it is willing to pay a finder's fee of 1.5% of the total freehold purchase price, or 10% of the first year's rent for leaseholds, which would equate to £22,500 for a completed £1.5m site purchase.

A finder's fee can be paid to any member of the public who identifies a suitable site for it to open a new store.

Richard Taylor, Lidl Great Britain's chief development officer, said the company was "continuing to invest in new locations whilst exploring innovative routes to expansion".

"As we look ahead, we're excited to welcome even more new shoppers to our existing stores, as well as those we're planning to open across the country in the coming months and years," he said.

Mortgage approvals rose to 61,300 in March - the highest number since September 2022.

They had been at 60,500 in February, according to the Bank of England.

While this is positive, industry experts are reporting that uncertainty over the direction of interest rates this year is prompting caution.

Mortgage rates have risen in the last few weeks as markets went from pricing in a base rate cut in June to thinking it may be August.

US inflation proving stubborn has led to concern here that the path to the 2% target may be bumpy - meaning the base rate may have to stay high in order to constrain spending and thus ease price rises.

Forecasts of three cuts this year from the current 5.25% have been scaled back to two.

Hina Bhudia, partner at Knight Frank Finance, said: "The sun is out and buyers are returning from their Easter break, so we'd usually expect these to be the busy weeks before the summer; however, the uncertain outlook for mortgage rates will undoubtedly weigh on activity.

"It's not just buyers that are frustrated. The lenders are eager to rebuild their businesses after a subdued 2023; however, they are constrained by stubborn inflation and the resulting impact on their cost of funding."

Following Sainsbury's boss Simon Roberts' claim that Britons like self-checkouts...

...we asked Money blog readers, and followers of our LinkedIn page , for their views.

While our inbox was filled with a lot of hate for self-checkouts, our poll of 2,613 people on LinkedIn shows that, overall, Mr Roberts was right...

We have rounded up some of your views here...

Self-checkout is the worst thing to ever happen. Standing like a child with your hand up, one person running up and down to deal with this, underpaid and understaffed. Janice Karaaziz, Money reader
I'll go out of my way to find a cashier, largely because my five-year-old will make a beeline for pressing the scales. I've noticed my local store having fewer and fewer cashiers on - and on many occasions there have been none. We need to think about inclusivity here. There will be some customers who will need a cashier for various reasons, so would expect there to always be at least one on, so stores are accessible for everyone. KaraS, LinkedIn
I try and limit my social interactions as much as possible, out of choice, so most of the time self-checkouts are convenient. Alasdair Corton, LinkedIn
They induce a level of irritation. Sometimes I can be heard answering them back. In general I choose to have my items flung at me by Lidl checkout staff. Siobhan W, LinkedIn
Self-checkout provides a great alternative to customers, especially those with smaller quantity purchases, but personally I think it's sad to see them dominate the front of Sainsbury's stores. In my opinion, it's the removal of one of the greatest ways to provide good customer service. Tom Tregay, LinkedIn
Self-checkouts are great, I will always choose to use one instead of a normal checkout. Some are easier to use than others, the Co-op and Tesco have easy-to-use interfaces whereas Morrisons is a bit more complicated. They'll evolve over time and there's always staff to help out. CG, LinkedIn
They're useful, but when they trigger a "basket check" on nearly every single shop, they begin to lose attractiveness Nicola Bradley, LinkedIn
I tend to argue with them lol. Especially when I can't get it to scan a particular item or you need approval for something so you have to wait for assistance anyway! Plus as a disabled customer I have to juggle my crutch, shopping, scanning and packing. With reduced staff in shops you can't always get the help you actually need. Elizabeth Graney, LinkedIn
Definitely not. So when I go to Sainsbury's I see a lot of older people and no way do they want to use self-checkouts. My mother lives in assisted living and all of them say they hate them. Get a grip, Simon - they are not faster, they are saving you employing more staff. I know my aunt has stood at an Asda til they put a staff member on there. Andrea Robinson, LinkedIn
Robots should never replace humans. Interaction is essential... if machines replace people no one will work, it's a crazy dangerous road. Nicola van Eerten, LinkedIn
The self-checkout is a money-saving exercise. They cut back everywhere. No staff on the shop floor to help. Paper bags in the veg section now cost 30p - for absolutely no reason. Mark, Money reader
