Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch in San Antonio
Your globe-spanning wildlife safari in Texas starts behind the wheel of your very own car. With a handy guidebook that will help you identify all the ranch’s animals, you’ll cruise along the scenic winding roads spotting American bison, African crowned cranes, and much more. Don’t drive too fast as some of these animals will walk right up to your vehicle, an ideal time to unroll your window and toss out with a handful of food or strike a pose for a one-of-a-kind selfie. Although any time of the year is good to visit, spring offers the best chance to see young zebras, llamas, antelopes, and other animals.
Although your self-guided wildlife safari could fill up most of your day, it is by no means the only thing to do at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. Get face-to-face with a towering giraffe, watch energetic ring-tailed lemurs play, and snap some photos at the Walk-A-Bout part of the ranch.
Spend enough time exploring the ranch and you’ll likely work up an appetite as big as the Serengeti, so herd your flock on over to the Safari Camp Grill. The eatery’s menu features fare both light and robust, as well as a dessert selection that includes Zebra a la Mode. Speaking of dessert, you can also stop by the Safari Sweet Spot for some homemade fudge or a cold beverage. Order whatever your taste buds crave, then sit on the covered patio and watch the giraffes meander by. Think you’re done yet? Not a chance! After all, what would a visit to the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch be without a souvenir? Pay a visit to the Safari Trading Post for a unique memento, such as a t-shirt, cup, silver giraffe pendant, or even an ostrich egg.
Embark on an African Safari, Texas Style right here in Texas, and enjoy a remarkable day out with the whole family, at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch.

I've come here at least 5 times over the years and I have a great time every single time! This is a great place to bring your kids or just come as a couple! It's so fun to see how the animals approach you! They tell not not to feed the animals directly from your hands but a lot of people do feed the more gentler animals and it's so cool to watch! Some of the animals can be a bit aggressive toward the food such as the ostriches but others are quite gentle and are happy to be fed! Some animals block the road a bit so you just have to wait for them to cross or drive around them where possible! The giraffes are in in enclosed areas but most of the other animals do roam freely by the road. The restrooms are found before the safari entrance, where they also have a small restaurant with basic fast food options. This includes fries and burgers, etc. There are no break points during the safari so it's best to use the restroom prior to entering the safari! You pay the entry fee once and you get one bag of feed for free with the entry, but you can go through the safari as many times as you want prior to closing.

WOW, what a complete disappointment! So BUYER BEWARE! My experience at this drive-thru safari compared to the one in Franklin was completely night and day. And my overall visit here was very mixed. While it was fascinating to see a the wide variety of animals the location offered, I couldn't help but notice that many (if not most) of them seemed disinterested in interacting with the vehicles passing through. They were doing a very good job of resting near the fences which were not near the driven path. These animals appear well-fed (which is a good thing), but being well fed makes them appear very content, which is undoubtedly a positive aspect of the safari. However, it did detract somewhat from the excitement of the experience, as I had hoped to witness more engagement from the wildlife like my previous 3 visits to the Franklin Safari. Overall, while this safari provided a unique opportunity to observe animals in their "natural habitat", the lack of interaction from the animals was highly disappointing considering the price paid and also buying food to feed to them which essentially went unused as there was not many animals interested in the food we bought. The location also offers some monkeys and lemurs to look at as well as a bird experience, which we did not opt to pay for. There is also a dinosaur / dragon exhibit which is decent if you are into those kinds of things. It was cool to see how an average human compares in size to the dinosaurs as the replicas were life-sized.
Fun outdoor activity in the safety of your vehicle. It was good to see all the open spaces being used for wildlife. A nice way to spend less than 2 hours.

Super cool cavern if you're in the area it's a great visit that takes a few hours. The caverns are a bit different so do both. Just a heads up it's pretty hot so you should wear shorts and a t shirt , no hoodie required.
So much fun for the whole family!! Whatever you do- be CAREFUL with the emus! They are so aggressive! Reached in the car to take the bag out of my boyfriends hand. At the end, PLEASE go in the little bird room and feed the birds. You will absolutely love it. Makes you feel so in tune with nature. I loved it! Kinda pricey but we loved it.

I visited here with my sister in late April of this year. For the most part, it is a self drive-through tour in which you can buy inexpensive bags of animal feed before you drive your car through to view and enjoy animals at your own pace. I believe there is also an option to ride a shuttle driven by an employee. But I'm not completely sure how that works? Or how much extra you would have to pay to be driven around by a shuttle driver? It seems like most people bought the animal feed and drive their cars through. If you're the kind of person who would also like to take pictures while you go through this, I would recommend doing this with at least one other person, just so one person can drive and the other person can snap photos. In regards to actually throwing the feed out to the animals, I think both the driver and passenger can do that on either side. If you're a solo driver, it's hard to drive, take photos, and feed the animals. But if you are the kind of solo visitor who just wants to drive through and enjoy the animals with no intention of taking photos, that is still do-able :) ! We came on a really hot afternoon. So I have to admit that we didn't quite enjoy it as much as we could have if the weather was cooler. Supposedly, if you really want to drive through more than once on the same visit, you are allowed to do that. This is much more feasible to do on a cooler day than on a hot day though. If you also want to feed the animals, I would recommend going in the morning. Because we went in the afternoon, most of the animals were not that hungry because they already ate earlier in the day. We ended up leaving our unused animal feed with the gift shop employees, who said they could always sell this to visitors the next day to feed the animals. Although the concept of a drive-through animal tour is nice, we were alarmed and concerned that there isn't much supervision along the route. The rules state that visitors need to be in their cars at all times, and they can only toss the animal food out towards the animals. They aren't supposed to get out of their cars and they aren't supposed to hand-feed the animals. Yet, we saw many people who disobeyed the rules and did this! Some people got super close to the giraffes, goats, antelopes, etc when they weren't supposed to. We think these animals are too used to human visitors as well. Some of them walk right into your path on the road and won't move. This poses a danger definitely to the animals because they can get easily hit by cars. More human employee supervision along the route would be better for these animals to monitor visitor activity and to stricter enforce more appropriate behavior of visitors towards them. There really should be well-established boundaries between humans and animals. If this could be improved, we think this would be a much more enjoyable experience for everyone :) !

My fiancé and I stopped by the wildlife ranch this past Easter. We got in around 1:30 pm with not much traffic. Overall we had a great time and will definitely bring friends and family over the next times we come back. Some observations: 1. Families tended to disobey the rules regarding feeding the animals. I saw several children and parents encouraging each other to feed the animals from their hands, screaming when the animal pecked their hand or approached them. Definitely a liability there but I guess that's a risk the families don't mind taking. While we were there, a family actually attempted to open the door of their car to get down. Where's the park ranger?? Not a great situation. 2. It would be nice to see some form of "animals spotted today" sign to have an idea of what animals you can expect to see as weather can vary. That's about it from constructive feedback, overall it was a blast! Highly recommend if you're in the area.
Pricey, but we were told you are able to run through multiple times. Wasn't a big fan of the item shop, but would recommend for all ages.
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is really nice. The animals come right up to the car and will eat out of your hand if you are brave enough. Just be careful because they are wild and might get your finger if you are not careful. Watch out for the zebras they have large teeth. If you are looking for a fun family thing to do, this is it.
Exotic eating out of our hand.
Hand feeding!
Heyyyyyy you guyssssss!! We were so stoked about the drive thru ranch. It was super hot in TX some animals just didn't want to engage at all. The pebbles they feed them seem to be boring to the animals except the deer. Overall we had a great time driving 5 miles an hour to see beautiful animals.

Texas Hill Country Safari & Wildlife Park
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is home to around 500 animals and over 40 species of wildlife from every contintent except Antartica – I don’t think any Antartica species would enjoy our Texas summers! Several of the species are threatened or endangered and others have been born at the Ranch as a part of a very successful breeding program. The Hill Country provides a natural habitat for the animals which roam freely through the 100s of acres of Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch.
You’ll also get lots of photo opportunities to capture some pictures of the animals in their native environment. But what makes this trip fun is feeding and touching the animals – at first the small kids may be hesitant, but by the end of the trip, their hands filled with food will be hanging out the windlows and they’ll be begging the wildlife to come up to your car so they can feed and pet them. And they won’t be disappointed. Make sure you pick up enough food at the entrance – you don’t want to run out.
There are over 4 miles of trails that meander through the ranch and into differnt areas of the ranch that are brooken into several animal preserves, each of which has wildlife unique to the area. For example:
- Kenyan Preserve is home to a variety of African animals like the Eland, Blesbok, Red Lechwe, Wildebest, Damaraland Zebra, Bluebull, and more
- Massai Savanna has Ostrich, Llama, Sicilian Donkeys, Addax, Blackbuck, Rhea, Emu and more
- Tatonka Range has Kudu, Waterbuck, Watusi, Longhorn, American Bison, Springbok, Gemsbok, and Aoudad
Once you’ve driven all the trails or run out of food, and you can drive them as many times as you like, make sure you stop by the petting barnyard and Walk-A-Bout area. Kids will love the petting barnyard where they can mingle with, pet, comb, and hug several variety of animals. The Walk-A-Bout area has Lemurs, Girafee, Kangaroo, Muntjac, Patagonian Cavy, Peacocks, and a variety of other feathered firends.
The Safari Camp gill has some tasty food to rejunivate you after a wild safair – made to order burgers, queso, sandwiches, ice cream, and lots of other options
Have fun and say hi to the Ostrich for us! We visited Nature Bridge Wildlife Ranch as part of a fun weekend – read our Camels, Caverns, Crochet Weekend Adventure.

Take a Day Trip Safari Adventure to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch
January 8, 2018 by Brittany Ballard Leave a Comment
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is about an hour south of Austin and features an African safari, Texas-style
Whether you’re a giraffe lover or just an animal lover in general, I have the day trip adventure for you to put on your calendar next. Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is just an hour south of Austin on the outskirts of San Antonio. The ranch is a fun twist on traditional animal-viewing experiences and features a Texas-style African safari.
What Is Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch?
Get up close and personal on your safari as resident animals roam the property, straight up to your vehicle
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch was created in 1984, after the family owners visited similar parks in the northeast and decided they wanted to add diversity to the area around Natural Bridge Caverns . The ranch originally spanned 200 acres, but has grown to cover a whopping 450 acres. It’s the longest running and most visited safari in Texas.
The ranch is inhabited by over 500 animals in a “home away from home.” More than 40 species from all over the world are represented, including native, exotic, and endangered wildlife. Some of the beautiful animals you’ll see are giraffes, rhinos, zebras, lemurs, wildebeests, and ostriches.
The main attraction at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is its Texas-style African safari, which spans six miles of trail throughout the property. The fun part of this adventure? You experience it all from the comfort of your car. Animals are free-roaming throughout the drive and come up to your vehicle to get food.
What Can You Expect When You Visit?
There are over 500 animals at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, most of which you can feed straight from your car as you drive through the safari
Buckle up because you’re in for the ride of your life. The fun starts before you even get to the admissions booth. Just beyond the entrance lies a giraffe enclosure and barn. The newest star and addition to the family, darling Faith, is often standing with her mama at the front to greet visitors. While you’re waiting in line, you can just stare at them in awe. I know I did!
Once you get to the admissions booth, you’ll get a bag of feed for the car (with the option to buy more) and a safari map. From there, you can choose between a few options: start by checking out the petting zoo and Lemur Island, visit with the giraffes at the front, or head straight onto the adventurous safari.
If you don’t stop to walk along the giraffe barns and enclosure, I recommend beginning by driving straight to the safari. The drive can take from an hour to two hours, depending on how long you linger with the animals. Cars will be lined up on the side of the road for picture-taking and feeding the visiting wildebeests, zebras, and other animal friends. If you’ve finished at your stop, you are free to drive around those who are still parked. Just be careful to steer clear of anyone else on the road–be it vehicle or animal.
Check out Lemur Island before leaving and feed some of the koi fish in the pond surrounding them.
If you decide to turn into Tower Creek, about halfway through the main path, you’ll get to see another gorgeous herd of giraffes (called a tower), along with ostriches and other fun animals. There’s also a Sweet Stop and restrooms, so this is the perfect place for a quick break before you head over to the zebras and rhinos.
At the end of the safari, you can stop back at the base camp for more fun. There’s a petting barnyard with some lively goats. If you have extra feed after your drive through the safari, use it here and give your kiddos one more chance to get up close and personal with the animals. Lemur Island is in the middle of a koi fish feeding pond, and there are a few more animal enclosures to see while you’re in the area.
If you’re feeling a little munchy after the safari, stop by the park’s Safari Camp Grill to grab some grub and fuel up. You’ll find a range of items on the menu, from pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, to personal pizzas, to burgers.
Giraffe Conservation Efforts at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch
New addition to the giraffe family at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, baby Faith, and her mother. NBWR has a successful giraffe breeding program and Faith is their 32nd giraffe!
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is proud of its successful giraffe breeding program, which recently welcomed its 32nd baby giraffe, Faith, on Nov. 9, 2017. Faith is the third generation of giraffes born on the property. The park is also home to a rare pair of giraffe twins born in 2013, only the ninth known living set in the world.
“Forty percent of all giraffe subspecies have been lost in the last 30 years,” says Tiffany Soechting, resident animal specialist at Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch. She hand-reared Buddy, the male giraffe twin. The inseparable bond that was created became the driving force for her being a voice for giraffes.
On World Giraffe Day, June 21, Soechting teamed up with fellow giraffe conservationists Ashley Davison, Fred Bercovitch, and Catherine Land to establish Save the Giraffes , a nonprofit organization dedicated to guaranteeing the protection and preservation of giraffes in their natural habitat. The organization has been able to give money to three different projects since its creation: Chimpembele, GPS Collaring, and Project Giraffe.
Between its fun, unique safari and dedication to preserving endangered species, Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is an all-around great experience. And if you decide that one time through the safari isn’t enough, you don’t have to worry about paying to go through again. Visitors can enjoy the adventure as many times as they like before the park closes for the day.
