Chris, our Nordic Visitor Travel Consultant, was very responsive to every email that I sent and answered any questions that I had. We had 4 in our group and it was simple to have 2 single rooms and 1 double and add days at the beginning and the end of our trip just from their website. A welcome package was waiting for us at our first hotel that included detailed information about our trip and a map with highlighted roads and points of interest along the way. Our accommodation ranged from small boutique hotels to resort hotels. Each was close to the city centre and excellent! Breakfast was included each morning which made it easy to get going. It was nice to have our accommodation and car secured for us so we only worried about where we were going to explore each day! We highly recommend Nordic Visitor and will definitely use them in the future!

You can also find more detailed answers and travel tips in our Ireland Travel Guide . Or, if you want to know more about booking and payment details, check out our FAQ page .

1. What is Ireland known for?

The Emerald Isle is known world-wide thanks to its beauty, culture and history. People around the globe celebrate St Patrick’s Day, listen to Irish music, drink Guinness beer and read Irish literature. Let’s not forget about its natural beauty, stunning coastlines and mystical castles.

Read more cool things about Ireland on our experts' blog.

2. What's the weather like in Ireland?

The weather conditions in Ireland can change quickly and often in all regions of the country. Although the climate isn’t extreme, the locals are fond of saying that you can experience all four seasons in a day. Make sure to dress the part and nothing will stop you from enjoying your trip!

3. How many castles are in Ireland?

From grand historic castles to atmospheric ruins, there are castles dotted all over Ireland. Estimated at over 30,000 there are too many to visit during your tour. For this reason, we’ve compiled our 15 favourite Irish castles in this blog so you can decide which ones you want to see.

4. What language is spoken in Ireland?

English and Irish (Gaelic) are the two main languages of the Republic of Ireland. However, the Gaelic-speaking Irish are bilingual, so you won’t need a language book. You may encounter some signs in Gaelic throughout your tour, but you can check out our wee guide to learn more .

5. What currency is used in Ireland?

The Republic of Ireland is part of the European Union and uses the Euro (€, EUR) as currency. In Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, the currency is the Pound sterling (£, GBP). Find out more in our guide about Ireland’s currency and money .

6. Is Ireland a safe place?

Ireland is a very safe place to visit! It has recently been ranked amongst the 15 safest countries in the world. As in other European countries, pickpocketing and petty theft can occasionally occur in cities, but the risk of encountering crime in the rural areas is very low.

7. What is the capital of Ireland?

Dublin is the capital of the Republic of Ireland and Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. All our Ireland tours start from Dublin. If you fly into a different Irish city, get in touch so we can book you a private transfer to Dublin or customise your tour to start from a different location.

8. Do you need a visa to go to Ireland?

EU or EEA citizens, as well as those carrying passports from the UK, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, do not need visas for short-term travel in Ireland. If you are visiting from another country, please check the Irish Government website to see if you need a visa and how to apply.

9. Can I choose my arrival date?

Yes, you can. Our Ireland tours can start on any day between April and October. When you’ve picked your favourite package and you’re ready to book, simply pick a date in the calendar that suits you best. Your personal travel consultant will then get in touch to confirm your details.

10. When should I book my flights?

We recommend that you do not organise flights until we have confirmed your package. Once you book your tour with us, one of our travel agents will contact you within two working days with more details about your arrangements. You can then book your flights with the confirmed start date of your tour.

11. What is there to do in Ireland?

There is much to explore in Ireland. We believe one of our adventures tours of Ireland will allow you to see the Emerald Isle at its best and enjoy its highlights.

Some must-do activities in Ireland include:

  • Discovering the capital, Dublin , from where you can take day trips to nearby attractions.
  • Walking along the impressive Cliffs of Moher .
  • Driving the Wild Atlantic Way to see the stunning coastline.
  • Tasting the Irish flavour with some local food, whiskey and beer.
  • Heading to Northern Ireland to visit Belfast and the Giant’s Causeway .
  • Exploring the gems and villages along the Ring of Kerry .
  • Learning about your Irish heritage.

You can read about some of our favourite places in Ireland here .

12. Can you see the northern lights in Ireland?

While it is technically possible to sometimes see the northern lights from Ireland (especially in County Donegal, thanks to its northerly location and lack of light pollution), it’s not the ideal location to do so.

Why not head inside the Arctic Circle instead? You have a higher chance to spot the northern lights in Iceland or see them during an  aurora safari in northern Norway .

13. How much can I customise my tour?

When creating packages, our tour operators aim to show our visitors the very best of Ireland. But we understand everyone’s dreams are different. Should there be anything in particular you’re keen to see, or if you want to stay longer to explore more of Ireland, simply get in touch so we can help arrange it all for you.

14. When is the best time to visit Ireland?

For the best weather and longer daylight hours, we recommend visiting between April and October. At this time, attractions also have longer opening hours meaning you can make the most of your tour! Read more about the best time to visit Ireland depending on your interests .

15. What should I pack for my trip?

The Irish weather can be variable and unpredictable, even between April and October. Regardless of the weather, this is what we recommend packing for your trip to Ireland:

  • Light and waterproof layers, including a rain jacket
  • Light gloves
  • Your camera!
  • Binoculars for wildlife and bird watchers
  • A pair of walking shoes (or boots) if you intend on going for coastal walks

Read more in our packing guide .

16. How do you get from Ireland to Scotland?

While Ireland is an island, you can easily drive or take a bus to Northern Ireland (which is part of the UK). From there, you can hop on the ferry to the south of Scotland. For the best of both, visit Scotland and Ireland in one tour. Plan your ideal trip to the Celtic nations with this handy guide .

17. What does craic mean in Ireland?

When you visit Ireland, you may hear the word ‘craic’ (pronounced crack) or the expression ‘What’s the craic?’ from the locals. It’s a popular Irish word meaning ‘enjoyable time’. It can also mean fun and entertainment.

Overland Ireland - Small Group Tours

Overland Ireland - Small Gr…

travel agency for ireland

  • Excellent - 470 reviews for Ireland tours
Congratulation to Overland Ireland. Organisation was impeccable from the hire car pick up at Dublin airport, through to the pre booked accommodation every night. As a person with limited mobility I was grateful for accommodation with an adjacent car park, so while the hotels in Londonderry and Belfast were lovely and central, I would have preferred not to have to use shopping centre overnight parking and carrying my luggage for several hundred metres to the hotels. I preferred the smaller, out of the way villages to stay. I resorted to packing a small overnight bag to make life easier. The itinerary was comprehensive and varied. I discovered the Wild Atlantic Way which gave me options to explore if there were any parts of the suggested route I was not so interested in and I would recommend that Overland Ireland make mention of its existence as an additional planning resource. The printed itinerary was essential and while Paddy the Palm Pilot app was somewhat useful, the fact that the days programme was not uploaded until the morning made it less so. I would have preferred to have it available the night before to think about and pre plan the day's activities. I did not see the point of the passes tab which was just a list which I had already in the printed material. In general the app was mostly a repeat of the printed material and it would be better to have everything in one form or the other, not a mish mash of both. It needs to be made clear that vouchers need to be printed separately, one to a page, as venues need to keep them for reimbursement. I ended up losing some information because, without understanding the implications, I had printed everything back to back. Overall, these were just very small annoyances in a generally excellent, well thought out 10 day itinerary that was indeed in depth. I thoroughly enjoyed everything and love meeting the 'real' Ireland.
fiendly , excellent and knowledgeable guide who drove us to see beautiful scenery.

The entire trip was wonderful, very well organized, and satisfying. Peter Flood was an excellent tour guide. He was as knowledgeable as could be, funny, and helpful; and really seems to love what he does.
This was my first time in Ireland. I absolutely loved everything about this trip. Tour guide and bus driver were amazing. Totally worth every penny. Would go back in a heartbeat

Contiki

  • Excellent - 5,455 reviews for Ireland tours
Really wish they spelled out that the Ireland trip is just a portion of a larger trip - most of the people have already travelled together for two weeks, so that was kinda awkward. Great trip for 18-24 year old Australians.
Had an amazing trip!! Was far better than I could have possibly imagined and I would definitely book with Contiki again!!

This tour was so good! We experienced more of Ireland than the itinerary indicated (because of stops we made along our journey, which I loved!), but never felt rushed. Our guide Diarmuid is such a professional - he provided us with interesting information about the places we stopped and Ireland in general, kept us on schedule with a relaxed demeanor, and is genuinely a very nice person. I've never traveled with a tour group before and this one couldn't have been any better. The Emerald Isle is so beautiful and everyone is so friendly that, even when there was a bit of rain, it was still fun. Many thanks to Mick and Diarmuid (the best!!) for making this a most memorable trip. PS the accommodations were fantastic - especially the breakfasts!
Incredible trip. Very well planned. Helpful and accommodations where spectacular. Don't worry about luggage!

We had a fantastic time on a 10-day Tour with this company. Our group was only 7 so it was quite comfy and felt very personalized but I know they would make even the largest group feel right at home. Lee our guide was absolutely great and he went out of his way to make the trip as personal as could be and worked hard to either stay ahead of or avoid altogether the bandwagons of hordes that otherwise crowd the the usual spots. Getting to out of the way locations and having benefit of seemingly local-only knowledge contributed greatly to the sense of awe we were left with at the conclusion of the journey. I highly recommend this provider!
Lee was exceptional! His energy and charm made the trip engaging and every day was full of stories, history and a variety of activities. We saw off the beaten track areas, laughed and everything ran smoothly. Lee is the best guide I’ve had on a tour and his love of Ireland shines through and made this a very memorable trip. Highly recommend Irish Experience Tours, they understand how to make your trip unforgettable;)

Quality or quantity is your choice. The tour list plenty of cities you get to visit and sounds like a great value; it’s wasn’t. London and the two cities Cambridge, and York were very good. I enjoyed them Windsor even after paying extra. Scotland was a different story. Edinburgh was nice we had a guided tour on the bus and an hour and a half of free time. Edinburgh has a history museum: where they kept the first cloned sheep; never even seen the building from the outside. The hotel was a twenty minute ride back into town. We checked in at 20:00 or 8 pm. Needing to be up and ready to leave by eight in the morning negates taking a bus for twenty minutes. Hotel location should have been closer to city center not the edge of town. Then we spent a day going through the Scottish Highlands to the Loch where Nessie is supposed to reside. The boat ride and time at the castle ruins while picturesque ate up three hours. We arrived in Glasgow at 8pm or 20:00 right from the freeway to the hotel. Glasgow was a complete and total disappointment. The hotel was set up for the thirty and under crowd all industrial and noisy. I didn’t care for it and the others in my group agreed it was the worst we stayed at. Now it was clean and modern just not a relaxing place. Rooms were tiny and there wasn’t a chair in it; just an ottoman looking thing to sit on. Only part of Glasgow we were able to see was when the bus took some riders to the train station. Then we were off to Ireland. Belfast was our first stop. Dropped off at the capital building and given two hours. No drive by the Titanic museum no history of Belfast except for a light touching of the troubles and a brief mention of the peace wall. I didn’t bother taking the Dublin tour and did my laundry that morning. I spoke with people who did the tour and wasn’t impressed by their experience. I did a full trip around the island exactly one year before and had pictures on my phone. When asked did they show you this or that the answer was generally no. Cork they set us down across the street from a department store and gave us an hour before we had to get on the bus to go to the hotel. No tour of Cork no history. Hotel again was far enough you couldn’t just walk in the time we had. The roast of the trip was the same story over and over again. The hotels while nice and clean were never where you could get out and about to enjoy and explore by yourself. I was looking forward to Galway as it was one of my favorite spots visited last year; the mall built with a castle wall inside it. Didn’t have time to go there if I also wanted to eat dinner. I did see two sights in Ireland I didn’t see last time. Filming location for The Quit Man and a monastery relics in the middle of Ireland. So this was quantity over quality and I wasn’t impressed.
The first part of the tour (Paris and London) the tour guide seemed inexperienced and gave inconsistent meeting times which confused many in the group. The driver was rude but did drive well.

Our tour guide Robert was great! I wish we had more time in the day to do it all, but the time we had was well spent!
Adrian was a great driver, I felt he did a wonderful job navigating the treacherous roads. Gordon, our team guide, was a good sport and tried his best to keep us all on schedule. He was knowledgeable, interesting and entertaining. I am not sure that he liked the driver though. There seemed to be some tension between them. I thought the Dingle peninsula area was spectacular. I loved the sheep dog demo, the farm visits and nature visits throughout. The hotels were all comfortable and clean. The breakfasts were plentiful. The entertainment options were lovely.

My first Insight Tour and it was amazing. Scenic tour of the beautiful countryside, towns, and historic sites of England, Scotland, Wales, and Republic of Ireland. Our Travel Director, Greg, was very professional, knowledgeable of the history, culture, food, music, and local 'celebrities'. Greg and our driver (Arthur - the best) worked together as a team, making our trip enjoyable, memorable, and fun. Always courteous, respectful, and conscientious of our time, safety, and well-being. Good job!
What a wonderful way to experience my first tour. This 13 day highlight of the best that Britain an Ireland have to offer was full of amazing opportunities to taste the culture and meet locals that lovel and adore their country and the history that holds. Greg our tour guide was exceptionally in his organisation, knowledge and commitment to ensuring that we enjoyed our trip. His attention to details and the extras to make the group feel welcomed and special. My personal experience on my special day was made even more heart warming by Greg's kindness and effort in make sure that I felt loved and acknowledge with an celebration at the evening meal. Arthur our driver was amazing and his experience in driving showed in the professionalism he demonstrated in through the entire 13 days. Overall i would throughly recommend this trip to anyone especially if they are blessed with Greg and Arthur.

Hugh was a wealth of knowledge, entertaining, and kind. We so very much enjoyed our trip because of him.
Matthew, a very experienced driver, was fun, entertaining, and knowledgeable. We had a great time listening to tall tales, history, and some short tales, too! He made sure we had plenty of time to see and photograph the sites, which was very much appreciated. I’d certainly recommend the tour to friends. The tour group size was perfect. Thanks, again to Matthew!

The communication/paperwork could use a little fine tuning, but overall the value was definitely there. This tour brings you through absolutely spectacular areas of Ireland, with enough downtime to not feel too rushed. The hotels/food was nicer than we expected for the price.
Just finished this great tour of Ireland with Indus Travel. Eddie, the tour bus driver, and Marian, our tour guide, were amazing. Great info about the areas we traveled, history and local stories.

We had to spend our own money to visit Ross castle and places. Which was inconvenient since there's no taxi available. Guide should have dropped and picked us up.
I checked all the boxes off for me going to Ireland, saw a lot of Ireland in a week. Guide was exceptional in his knowledge of Ireland. A 5 star experience for me seeing everything I wanted

Dingle Peninsula, Ireland

Ireland vacations 2024 & 2025

  • Dingle Peninsula

Renowned for its warm welcome, literary genius, live music and green fields, Ireland is a small isle with enormous character. It's compact enough to explore easily, yet also incredibly diverse. Our Ireland specialists have a deep affinity with the island — north and south — and can bring you closer to the landscapes and the Irish people even at its most famous attractions such as Giant's Causeway.

Our Ireland specialists know the country inside out and can lead you to experiences you won’t find in a guidebook. On a tailor-made vacation to Ireland with Audley, you’ll see the highlights — and much more — your way. We’ll design your ideal trip with you, paying close attention to your interests, your travel style and your budget.

Try kayaking to romantic ruins on the Lakes of Killarney , take a literary pub crawl around Dublin or gain an introduction to Northern Ireland’s political history on a black taxi tour of Belfast. We also recommend getting well off the beaten path in places like the little-visited Beara Peninsula or along the stone-walled roads of the island of Inis Mór. Wherever you go, you'll be welcomed with that legendary Irish charm, regaled with stories and persuaded that the only way to do this place justice would be to plan a return visit.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Ireland

Ireland has two official languages English and Irish. Irish is a Celtic language related to Scots Gaelic, Welsh, and Breton, and is predominantly spoken in Gaeltacht areas in the west of Ireland but you’ll see it on road signs and all official documentation.

In the Republic of Ireland, which covers roughly five-sixths of the island of Ireland, the currency is the euro (€), while In Northern Ireland, which is a part of the United Kingdom, the currency is the pound sterling (GBP).

ATMs are easy to find, all major credit and debit cards are accepted, and contactless payments are accepted almost everywhere. Euros can be used across Europe, but Northern Ireland notes, which are different to those used elsewhere in the UK, are often unfamiliar to retailers outside Ireland and it may be best to exchange those in a bank or post office.

A standard tip in Ireland is between 10% and 15% for a restaurant meal. Check the total though — a gratuity is often added automatically. Tipping in pubs and bars is not expected. Drivers, guides, and hotel staff will appreciate a tip, but it isn’t always expected.

For the latest travel advice for Ireland, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation, please refer to the State Department website .

Food and drink is a huge part of Irish culture and in recent years the focus has been on locally sourced and seasonal produce, artisan food stuffs, and distinctive regional products.

Being an island nation, fish and seafood is plentiful. You’ll find delicate smoked salmon, creamy chowders, and fresh oysters and mussels along the coast. Although traditional dishes such as Irish stew, colcannon (mashed potato with cabbage and scallions) and boxty (fried grated potato) still appear on some menus, you’re more likely to encounter pan-European influences in most dishes.

Traditional Irish soda bread remains a local staple and you’ll find it in all shops and on most breakfast plates. Although Guinness, Ireland’s rich, full-bodied stout, is served everywhere, in Cork, order a pint of Beamish, a locally brewed rival with a more substantial bite. Whiskey distilleries are long established in Ireland, but craft beer and cider are also gaining ground.

A small island with a rich history and culture, dramatic landscapes, and a fair bit of rain, Ireland provides a wealth of experiences for the visitor. You could follow in the footsteps of literary heavyweights such as Joyce, Wilde, or Beckett on a literary pub crawl in Dublin, delve into prehistory on a guided tour of the Neolithic passage graves in Newgrange and the Boyne Valley , or discover the wonders of the Giant’s Causeway and the Antrim Coast .

Romantic castle ruins, wild national parks, and stone-walled fields litter the country, and whether you’d enjoy visiting cheesemongers and chocolatiers on a Dublin food tour , sipping peaty spirits at the Jameson Distillery , or exploring the Cliffs of Moher by boat , Ireland offers plenty of choice.

The choice of places to stay in Ireland is as varied as the landscape. You can stay in historic castles decorated in opulent traditional style, fishing lodges nestled in secluded valleys, or urban hideaways with sleek, contemporary design. The Irish are renowned for their hospitality, and whether you choose to stay in a family-run guesthouse or a plush, urban hotel, you’ll find a special welcome waiting.

In Belfast, history and grandeur combine in the Merchant Hotel . In Kilkenny, you can stay in stately Butler House, former home of the Earls of Ormonde, while on the shores of Lough Erne, you can stargaze in a dome as you fall asleep to the sound of the water. To get some ideas, browse our collection of places to stay in Ireland , and start planning your trip.

Most trips to Ireland begin in Dublin, the Republic’s capital. It’s a beguiling place where political and literary history collide, and local life never takes itself too seriously. From Dublin , you can head west to see the wild, raw beauty of Connemara , the otherworldly landscape of the Burren , or to join an impromptu traditional music session in Galway , Westport, or Doolin.

Discover Donegal’s deserted beaches or hike along the towering cliffs at Slieve League , visit the Dark Hedges that featured in the Game of Thrones , Belfast’s poignant Titanic Museum , or learn about the city’s troubled past on a black cab tour .

To the south, Cork has a character so strong its people joke about it becoming their own republic, Killarney sits at the foot of the country’s highest peaks, and Dingle is all windswept beaches and pubs that have changed little with the passage of time.

A direct flight to Dublin from New York City takes just over six and a half hours. From Boston it’s six hours, from Seattle nine hours, and from San Francisco, it’s ten hours. Aer Lingus, Ireland’s national carrier, is the only airline offering direct flights to the west coast, although some routes only operate during the summer months.

The time zone in Ireland is UTC+1 hour. Daylight Savings Time is observed from late-March to late-October.

Self driving in Ireland is easy and efficient and is one of the best ways to get around. You’ll need to be comfortable driving on the left, however. Trains are modern and reliable, but the rail network is a little limited and if you choose to travel by train, you’re likely to need to use buses or taxis as well. We can also arrange private drivers to take you directly to your destination.

There’s no border control between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and if you’re driving, the only difference you might notice is a subtle change in the road signs and markings.

US citizens do not need a visa to visit Ireland for stays of up to 90 days.

Your doctor can provide you with immunization advice for Ireland. You can also check the recommended vaccinations by visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website . Ensuring you’re up to date with all vaccinations recommended at home before you travel is also a good idea.

You'll need at least one blank page in your passport, which should be valid for at least the duration of your stay, or at least six months after your travel dates if you are traveling onwards to a continental European country.

The Emerald Isle: where the rhythm is slower, the people are warmer, the spirit is fuller, and the earth is richer.

Irish hospitality may be a cliché – right up there with leprechauns and kissing the Blarney Stone – but when you take a  tour in Ireland  (whether that's in Galway or down   South ) you realize that this enchanting republic revels in its old-school approach to life. Connemara really is as brooding and lonely as we’ve been led to believe. The Dublin of James Joyce still lingers on in odd pockets of the city. The Guinness really is that good. If you want to enjoy your holiday, it’s best to leave your cynicism at the door and grab Ireland with both hands: learn the folklore of Roscommon and Donegal,   road trip your way along the south's coastline , go searching for faeries in Knocknerea Mountain, moan about the inclement weather and (above all) embrace the craic.

Best time to visit ireland.

Don’t forget your umbrella! Although the wettest time of year is from October to April, rain is pretty much a guarantee year round. Summer, June to August, promises better weather, and the long days are welcome even if the sun isn’t shining. May, June and September are great months to holiday in Ireland, as there are fewer tourists, more daylight and it’s usually relatively warm for Irish standards). July and August are the country’s busier months, but the festivals, events and good craic that take over the country more than make up for the increase in tourists.

History and government

Early history.

Tumultuous is a good word to describe Ireland’s often troubled and sorrowful history, which is filled with invasion, repression, deadly conflict, religious discrimination and emigration. Ireland’s history dates back to 8000 BC, and progressed from a hunter-gatherer society to an agricultural one. Christianity came to the island in the 5th century, replacing the old tribal and Druid societies, though many of the Celtic traditions were preserved. In the 800s, the Vikings started invading and regularly raided and plundered the island for upwards of two centuries. They set up settlements (most notably Dublin), but were eventually pushed out of Ireland by the Irish king Muirecán. (Ireland was then made up of many small kingdoms, who fought each other for dominance of other counties and the entire island.) Then came the Normans. When an exiled Irish king sought help from (English) King Henry II, he sent Norman forces to (successfully) recapture the Irish King’s counties. This event established Norman lords in Ireland, who soon ruled big tracts of Iand. This worried Henry II so much he invaded in person in 1172. Now it was not only Irish lords that were battling for control of the country, but Norman and English ones as well.

Fast forward to 1536 and Henry VIII, who tried to conquer Ireland and extend English law over the country. This was met with fierce resistance, especially when he tried to convert the Irish Catholics to Protestants. This opened up a brutal few centuries, where the endeavor for Protestant rule over Ireland led to many atrocities and battles. In the 1600s, land was confiscated from Catholics and given to Protestant settlers (known as the Plantations), triggering the first wave of mass Irish emigration. Remaining Catholics were subject to persecution, with their rights becoming less and less as time went on.

The Irish Rebellion of 1798, led by the republican United Irishmen (who wanted to overthrow British rule and have a non-sectarian republic) was brutally quelled and Irish self-government was abolished. From 1845 - 49, Ireland suffered the Great Famine, which saw over a million people die from starvation and disease, and a million or more emigrate. Understandably, relations between the Irish people and the British got worse, as the government had many means to stop the severity of the famine. Another tragedy was that this period (along with other factors) contributed to English largely replacing the Irish language. From this time until 1912, there were many attempts at reinstating home rule (Irish self-government) and a number of rebellions were instigated but failed. It was also when two distinct groups emerged: the Irish nationalists (who wanted Ireland to be independent and governed by the Irish) and Irish unionists (who considered themselves British and wanted to remain in the union).

Recent history

In 1922, after the Irish War of Independence and many years of fighting, the Anglo-Irish Treaty was signed and Ireland was divided into Northern Ireland (six counties) and Southern Ireland (26 counties), known as the Irish Free State. This lead to the Irish Civil War, fought between those who wanted a unified Ireland and those who wanted to keep Northern Ireland under British rule. The Irish Republican Army (IRA) lost, and Northern Ireland remained ruled by Britain.

The Irish Free State was a predominantly Catholic state and the Roman Catholic church had a massive impact on the formation of the country, as it had over much of Irish history. In 1949, the Republic of Ireland was established and left the British Commonwealth. Up until the late 1990s, the economy of Ireland struggled and emigration was an ongoing problem. Unfortunately the economic boom of the 90s and 2000s has faltered, and economic troubles have once again returned. That said, the conservatism of the Catholic church has lost its grip over society, with many social reforms that would have once been unthinkable being implemented in the 90s.

After the division of the counties in 1922, Northern Ireland became a predominantly Protestant state. Years of violence between pro-British Unionists and pro-Irish Republicans have marked its history, which is a complicated and bloody beast woven with political, ethnic and religious differences. It is as fascinating as it is heartbreaking, and worth reading about in a sphere that can do it justice. See our list of recommended books for books detailing this period.

Top 5 Irish mythical creatures

1. leprechauns.

They are Ireland’s most well known mythical characters. They are male faeries who take the form of an old shoemaker and are depicted with mischief in their eyes. Leprechauns are the source of practical jokes, have the ability to grant wishes and have untold riches buried away.

A banshee is a female faerie who is said to emit an other-worldly wail when someone is about to die. While usually heard rather than seen, reports of sightings range from the sight of a beautiful woman who utters a low, pleasant singing to a crone who emits a soul-chilling shriek.

They are creatures that are seals in the water but are human once they shed their skin on land. They are often linked with tales of ill-fated romance, where either a human has stolen the selkie’s skin so they can’t return to the water (and must marry the human) or a human is taken to the depths of the ocean to be their spouse.

4. Dullahan

A dullahan carries its head under its arm and rides a black stallion – and sometimes drives a wagon made out of skeletons! Its mission is to claim souls, stopping only to call out the name of the person who will die. Those who try to watch him will endure a bucket of blood thrown at them or a whip made out of a spinal cord. Only gold can scare it.

A merrow is the Gaelic version of a mermaid/merman – a half-human, half-fish creature with an amiable and benevolent nature. They are known to lure handsome men to live under the sea, but are also capable of living with humans and marrying them. They have a special hat called a cohuleen druith, and can’t return to the water if they lose it.

Top places to visit in Ireland

1. cliffs of moher.

Take your Irish holiday to a level that’s as high as the Cliffs of Moher themselves as you peer over the brink of these monolithic edges. Both vertical and abrupt in stature, these cliff faces provide monumental views over Galway Bay and out to the Aran Islands. Listen to the powerful waves crash against the sandstone far, far below and let the salty smell of the sea breeze calm your mind and lift your soul.

Trip: Northern & Southern Ireland

2. Aran Islands

Just when you thought Ireland couldn’t get any more spellbinding, the Aran Islands with their staggering cliffs, Celtic churches, and World Heritage Listed sites, peak out above the waters of Galway Bay to prove you wrong. Follow your local leader as you explore, not only the rugged coastline but also the ruins and remains of both the Bronze and Iron Ages for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

3. Ring of Kerry

From the tranquil sound of Torc Waterfall to the imposing monument that is Staigue Fort, the Ring of Kerry only adds to Ireland’s collection of unspoiled natural wonders. Stop in at bucolic villages such as Killarney, Beaufort, and Kenmare on the 179km circular journey and continue to adventure through ‘the Ring’ by private vehicle to see some shepherds in action on a local farm visit.

To be sure you get the full Irish experience you can’t go past ordering a pint of Guinness at a local pub in the republic’s capital of Dublin. Wandering through the cobbled streets of this electric city is thirsty work and you only need to stop in at one of the many refreshment-ready establishments to get your liquid fill. With a bitter, roasted taste and a texture that goes down (a little too) smooth, you’ll be ordering another round in no time.

5. The Wicklow Way

Known as the oldest, long-distance trail in Ireland, the Wicklow Way offers a whole heap of scenic experiences from passing through open moorland and forested heaths to walking beside fast-flowing mountain streams. If those views aren’t enough to convince you of Ireland’s beauty, then exploring Glendalough Valley’s monastic settlements and peering into deep, sapphire-colored lakes ought to do the trick.

Trip: Walk the Wicklow Way

6. Ballysaggartmore Towers

If you’re wondering what your next stop is on your journey to find some of Ireland’s most magical places, then let us introduce you to the Ballysaggartmore Towers. Created in a gothic style, these towers are both imposing and idyllic, situated in a fairytale-like wooded area that’s perfect for picnics. Join your tour on a walk of the grounds and imagine what it would have been like to roam the ornate stone halls.

Trip: Ireland: Kilkenny & Surrounds

7. Killarney National Park

While the small and charming town of Killarney is well worth a visit in its own right, it’s the dramatic and rugged mountain range that sits alongside it that elevates this scenic spot to the top of any ‘must-see’ list. Featuring the highest peak in Ireland in McGillycuddy’s Reeks and some of the world’s most recognizable lakes and waterfalls, this national park deserves to be explored. And admired. And loved.

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Eden Reforestation Projects

Eden Reforestation Projects are helping to mitigate climate change by restoring forests worldwide; they also hire locally and create job opportunities within vulnerable communities. Donations from our trips support restoration across planting sites in 10 countries around the globe. Find out more or make a donation World Bicycle Relief

World Bicycle Relief provides people in low-income communities with bicycles to mobilize school kids, health workers, and farmers in far-out areas – giving them access to vital education, healthcare, and income. Where the Love for Ireland Begins

Love irish tours, what we believe, our experience.

Love Irish Tours is a leading Irish tour company specializing in customized tours of Ireland. We offer self-drive tours , private escorted tours and bus tours throughout Ireland. All our tours are fully customizable. We provide a wide range of tours to suit any budget. We will not be beaten on price. Book with us and we will ensure you have the most memorable vacation! We put our passion into making your trip the dream vacation you have been planning for years.

We are here for you and we will take great care of you.

We are a young vibrant company based in County Meath in the heart of Ireland. County Meath is one of the most historic parts of Ireland and was the seat of power of the ancient High Kings of Ireland who ruled Ireland from the famous Hill of Tara. Newgrange, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a passage tomb that is older than the Pyramids of Egypt and is on our doorstep. Only a stone’s throw away from us is the famous Trim Castle, site of filming of Mel Gibson’s Braveheart. With all this history local to us, it is little wonder we became inspired to showcase all of what Ireland has to offer to the world!

We believe Ireland will be your most memorable vacation. Through us you will experience everything that Ireland has to offer. We genuinely believe you will have the experience of a lifetime and that once you arrive you won’t want to leave. At Love Irish Tours we believe we have everything you need to make your dream Irish trip a reality. We believe our model of doing business will ensure you have the best possible trip to Ireland. We build a personal relationship with all our customers and we have often been told that it is our personal touch that makes Love Irish Tours the success it has become.

We have over ten years experience in the tourism industry. We have extensive experience in the Irish tours business. We have created thousands of customised tours of Ireland over the years and our knowledge of Irish tourism is second to none. We have worked with group sizes ranging from one to 180 people and we have catered for every type of budget. We have travelled the length and breadth of Ireland and we have experienced everything for ourselves so that we know that our customers will have the best experience possible.

We loved finally seeing Italy (at least parts of it) and would love to see more. The time change and jet lag were a little rough on our two kids, but they adjusted and had a great trip. The history in Rome was so impressive and we learned a lot. The guided tours were excellent. Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast were beautiful and a nice change of pace from Rome. We also loved visiting Pompeii. Of course, there was great food, wine, and lots of gelato. Though the weather is fickle, spring seems to be a great time to visit as it isn't crowded like the summer and definitely not hot. Private or small group guided tours are the way to go to smoothly see sites and be educated. It was lovely taking the train to Naples as well. The only big change I think we would make is passing on the winery near Vesuvius. It was great to check out an Italian winery, but not this one. They kept us waiting a long time for a tour and lunch. The tour was lame and short, lunch was just ok, and the wine was mediocre. However, one bright spot was that the estate made red wine vinegar, which was delicious, and we were able to buy a few bottles. Working with Zicasso’s tour company was a pleasure. Our travel agent really paid attention to what we were looking to do and our family style, and she arranged a great itinerary. The hotel choices were really nice and perfect for our needs. There were a couple of scheduling hiccups on the trip and the tour company’s responsiveness and efforts to help were fantastic.

Words cannot adequately describe how perfect our trip was. My mother's dream was to see Ireland, but my father, at age 78, is not able to walk very far. I wanted her to be able to experience Ireland, but also make sure my father could be included. I contacted several companies with the above desires and Zicasso’s travel agent was the only one who adequately addressed my concerns about my father's abilities. From there, I left it in her, then our guide’s, hands. Our agent put together the perfect itinerary to provide a history of Ireland and its people, and then to experience the Irish countryside. She was quick with her responses to my questions and easily provided extra amenities like a wheelchair in case my father needed it and a yoga mat on request. After we booked the trip, my father's health declined further and I was very nervous that he wasn't going to be able to participate in the trip. However, our guide and driver made sure he could do almost everything. Our guide felt like part of our family and personalized the trip more than I ever could have imagined. We had five in our group, my nuclear family, and he learned what each of us was interested in and made stops along the route specifically for each of us, often effortlessly juggling us in different places at the same time. For the times that my father was too tired to participate, our guide kept him company in the van with witty conversation. The hotels we stayed at were top-notch, with service that was not just professional, but personal. The staff also took care of us like family. I had gone into the trip with some trepidation about making sure both of my parents were taken care of, but our travel agent and guide made it so easy that during the trip I was just able to enjoy what was likely the last trip my family will be able to take together. I cannot thank them enough for creating a trip that was absolutely perfect.

The trip was wonderful and the support from the travel agency was unstinting. From the first day, they were quickly responsive and continually exceeded our expectations. We had no hiccups along the way, so we didn't need to call on them during the trip, but I am confident they would have sorted any issue that arose.  Their reputation was reinforced by our guide in Bath, who said they were a great company to work with and emphasized that anybody who "picked up the phone" would provide the high level of service we'd experienced.

This is the third time I have used Zicasso to arrange travel. As is usually the case, Zicasso provided two prospective local travel agents for the intended trip. In the other two instances, I had some difficulty in deciding which agency to choose. Not the case with our travel agent. After conferring with her once, she immediately got what we were looking for. She generated a preliminary proposal, which was pretty close to the mark, and our decision was easy. Following this initial phase, our travel agent put together a lodging proposal based on our input and drew up a proposed itinerary. I say "proposed" as it was very much an outline. We were nearly entirely self-driving, so what we did each day was of our own choosing, based on her suggestions. This worked out perfectly, as we were largely free to alter the itinerary as necessary, such as due to inclement weather. Our travel agent did, however, book some very judiciously chosen excursions, such as a day trip to Inishmore with a private guide, which was phenomenal, and the Connoisseur Experience at The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, which, as a non-beer drinker, I found totally enthralling. The highlight of the hotel choices was definitely the castle. An amazing property! I found our travel agent easy to work with, very communicative before and during the trip, and would highly recommend working with her.

We absolutely loved working with Zicasso’s travel agents. They offered some great experiences and accommodations that I would have never considered, and did it all within our budget. We can't wait to go back to Ireland or make our first trip to Scotland, and I will definitely be calling Zicasso’s company for the next trip!

We took the most amazing trip to Norway to see the Northern Lights. I reached out to Zicasso, who put me in touch with our travel partner and their wonderful travel agent. She put together several options for the trip and we were able to choose the ones that best fit our family’s interests. Once everything was decided, she went to work doing everything. All the bookings, connections, transportation, etc. were handled and I didn't have to worry about any of it. Before the trip, she confirmed all of the details and included everything on an amazing travel app that we used while we were on the trip. I can't say enough about what an amazing experience we had on our trip and working with Zicasso and our tour operator. I have used both companies before and have never been disappointed.

Our Zicasso travel partner listened to our preferences and needs, and helped design a fabulous trip for our family. Transportation was flawless throughout the trip and the local guides were wonderful. We enjoyed getting to know them personally and learning about their hometowns. I especially valued the app that provided us with every detail for each day, including emergency contacts, hotel information, and itinerary. Thank you!

Ireland - Private Travel

The heart and soul of the Emerald Isle is its friendly people, lush landscape, engrossing history and generous hospitality.

Ireland is a country with depth, from its literary masterpieces to its toe-tapping traditional music.

Your luxury Ireland vacation begins in Dublin, where private guided tours take you into Dublin Castle, through the fascinating Irish Emigration Museum and the fun Guinness Museum, over to Trinity College and around St. Stephen’s Green. Grafton Street shopping and Temple Bar pubbing is also the order of the afternoon. Heading south into the heart of the country, the 12th-century Rock of Cashel is Ireland’s most visited site, along with the secret passageways of Blarney Castle, built more than 600 years ago, home to the famous Blarney Stone. Around to the Atlantic side, the Ring of Kerry is a scenic 100-mile driving route around the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, taking in the craggy coastline and hazy seaside towns. Avid motorists can also hop on the Wild Atlantic Way, the longest coastal touring roadway in the world at 1,500 miles. The colorful and cultural city of Galway is a natural stopping-off point. In Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, add the legendary Giant’s Causeway to the list. This UNESCO World Heritage Site on the north coast is a geological anomaly of hexagonal stone columns reaching out into the sea. To reach it, drive the Coastal Causeway to or from Belfast, a shoreline tour of pastoral perfection.

Whether you’ve visited Ireland many times or not at all, traveling outside of popular destinations (such as Dublin and Galway) has many rewards. Venturing further afield offers different, pristine landscapes to explore with fewer crowds and other exceptional experiences.

On this adventure, you’ll see the cultural wonder of iconic sparkling crystal being made and the natural wonder of bioluminescence, plus taste smoky flavors in spirits as well as food. Quiet sounds and scenic views in serene forests and bogs balance the exciting bustle of cities. In addition to staying in classic castle hotels, sleep among trees in Cork City, under stars in County Fermanagh, and in a boutique hotel that channels the spirit of Belfast.
