The Midsomer Murders Tour will transport you into the charming yet sinister world familiar to DCI John and Tom Barnaby and uncover the real locations that have given the show its distinct character since it was first broadcast in 1997.

Starting in London you will head to the towns and villages of the deadly county of Midsomer which are actually situated across several English counties including Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire that have played a role in more than 250 suspicious deaths over the years in the first eight series alone.

On this 8 hours tour your day will be crammed with thatched cottages, Norman churches, pretty villages and quite a few murder spots featured since the show was first aired back in 1997. You’ll be getting on and off the bus a number of times so you can take pictures of the pretty locations or crime scenes, depending on your point of view.

You’ll be taking lunch in the picturesque town of Henley-on-Thames which has featured in several episodes and you’ll also get the chance to have cream tea at a Midsomer location in the afternoon.

For those of you who haven’t seen Midsomer before or perhaps would like a refresher we will play clips of various scenes during the day.

Warborough has all the markings of a typical Midsomer village – a cricket pavilion, village green, pretty church and country pub. Located at the side of The Green is The Six Bells pub which has appeared in at least four episodes, once under its own name, but also in the guise of The Quill Inn, The Black Swan and The Luck in the World. Fans of the series will most definitely recognise where DCI Barnaby and Sergeant Troy used to sup a pint whilst discussing the latest case.

Midsomer Mallow in Bloom was filmed on the Green where there is a not dissimilar village festival held every year and the cricket pavilion on the Green appeared as Badger’s Drift Village Hall in The Great and the Good.

BRIGHTWELL BALDWIN

A charming and peaceful rural hamlet with a free house pub which means it can stock its own choice of beers – regulars on offer are Black Sheep, Rebellion IPA and Brakspears Bitter on hand pump as well as regular guest beers. St Bartholomew’s Church opposite the pub was used as the location for the funeral scenes in Destroying Angel and A Talent for Life.

This countryside setting is perfect for country walks and picnics. Stay over at the pub to enjoy a gorgeous sunrise and sunset across this magnificent landscape.

Lewknor is a small village built in the characteristic flint and brick architecture of the Chiltern Hills, where the school, (and its pupils), appeared as the Upper Warden school in two episodes of Midsomer Murders. At the heart of the village is The Leathern Bottle. This pretty Brakspears pub dates back 450 years and has an outside seating area where you are almost guaranteed to see the wonderful red kites soaring over the hills.

Probably best known for fabulous walks, Lewknor is situation very close to The Ridgeway National Trail and features less than five minutes from the M40 motorway.

A small village along the old coaching route from London to Oxford with a history of brick making, using the local clay that runs through the Chiltern Hills. There is still a kiln on the Green just along from The White Hart, a pretty pub parts of which date back to the 14 th century and which appeared in The Maid in Splendour as a pub of the same name. It’s a good place to stay and explore Midsomer, being on the road between Henley and Wallingford. The church, village shop and pretty cottages make a nice little village walk.

Rotherfield Peppard and Rotherfield Greys have been used a number of times for filming, most notably perhaps in Orchis Fatalis when the National Trust’s Grey’s Court provided the location for Brother Robert’s monastery, and more recently, the background for the Crawley picnic in Downton Abbey.

Rotherfield Peppard’s primary school appeared as Badger’s Drift Primary School in Death’s Shadow.

THE HASELEYS

Great and Little Haseley have been much filmed for Midsomer Murders, with The Plough Pub at Great Haseley offering the quirky Oxfordshire pub game of Aunt Sally at which DCI Barnaby manages an impossibly high score! The pub is one of a growing number of community pubs that belongs to the village who raised £400,000 to retain it. Off the beaten track, these two villages are quintessential Midsomer and a great place to park up and wander - several cottages will be recognisable as homes for dubious Midsomer residents (please be aware not to linger too long as these are private houses).

The church was used for wedding scenes in ‘Midsomer Rhapsody’ and the postman’s funeral in ‘Dark Autumn’. The village hall is perhaps the most filmed location throughout the series – an antique shop in ‘Dark Autumn’ , the venue for the book signing sessions in ‘The Fisher King’ , the photographic exhibition in ‘Picture of Innocence’ and Midsomer Parva village hall in ‘Blood Weddding’.

Midsomer Murders viewers react to 'bonkers' new episode as scheduling confusion explained

Itv isn't airing a new episode on sunday night.

Midsomer Murders returned to our screens on Sunday with a brand new episode, and viewers have taken to social media to give their verdict on the series 13 debut. 

The episode, titled The Blacktrees Prophecy, saw DCI John Barnaby and DS Jamie Winter investigate the death of paranoid survivalist and doomsday prepper Warren Kaine, who is found dead in his bombproof shelter after someone tampered with the air filter. 

Some viewers felt the plot was a little "far-fetched" and took to social media to share their views. One person penned: "New episode of #MidsomerMurders was absolutely bonkers...#ITVDrama," while another added: " Nice easy Sunday night telly but a bit far-fetched ."

A third fan commented: "#MidsomerMurders came back to ITV with some of the weirdest killings yet," while another agreed, adding: "What on earth have the writers of #midsomermurders been taking this week? Stories get more and more bizarre by each episode . Just keep it simple."

Not all viewers were critical of the storyline, however, with many praising the compelling instalment. One person penned: "What a great episode," while another added: " Great episode. Really enjoyed that ."

However, other viewers were left a little confused about the show's scheduling, as Sunday night (21 April) will see the return of Britain's Got Talent rather than a new episode of Midsomer Murders . 

"So what's happening next week then they're advertising something else at 9pm?" asked one person. 

HELLO! understands that ITV has yet to schedule the air dates for the remaining three instalments.

It's not all bad news, however, as the show is set to return with a 24th season, which was filmed last summer. ITV have yet to reveal a release date for the upcoming season. 

In the meantime, fans can look forward to the release of the drama's first interactive novel , which is set to hit the shelves on May 23. 

The new novel, which has been described as "nostalgic", will give readers the chance to become a key player in the hunt for a killer. Intrigued? Here's the book's synopsis: "All is not well in the beautiful county of Midsomer. On the eve of its first Villages In Bloom competition, a man lies dead, smelling of damson jam. Who could have done it? Well, that's where you come in. Step into the shoes of Midsomer CID's newest recruit, choose your own path and decide which way the story goes.

"Will you get to the bottom of the mystery? Will you bring the perpetrator to justice? And perhaps most importantly of all, could you avoid an untimely, and possibly bizarre, death... will YOU survive Midsomer? Your task is to make the right choices, solve the case and - most tricky of all - stay alive!... Good luck."
