Fasten Your Seat Belts and Embrace the City

singing bus tour nyc

By Edward Rothstein

  • Oct. 14, 2010

I don’t think the woman who flashed us the other night on West 57th Street by lifting up her shirt was in the cast of the new bus ride/city tour/improv show/New York experience called “The Ride.” But I’m only guessing, because one business-suited passerby on 42nd Street was so intoxicated by the Broadway melodies being broadcast by our passing bus that he dropped his briefcase and leapt into a vaudeville tap-dance routine right out of a 1930s musical. And a late-night deliveryman on East 43rd Street was so caught up by the passing tour’s blaring hip-hop soundtrack that he spun and flipped into a virtuosic break-dance routine.

But unlike those examples, which “The Ride” had clearly set up in advance for its patrons, pretending, with a wink, that the tour was giving us a glimpse of eccentric New York street life, the flasher didn’t seem to be performing a part, at least not one found in a script. She broke into laughter after her feat, watching the transparent-sided bus, with its three rows of stadium seats mounted sideways like a portable theater, filled with shrieking passengers.

In this, it turns out, she played right into the tour’s hands. So did we all. Because by the end of this 75-minute, 4.2-mile “Ride,” which is making its debut this week, the guides who had led us from West 42nd Street up to Columbus Circle and back had the bus singing a karaoke version of Kander and Ebb’s “New York, New York.” The words were flashed on the vehicle’s 40-some video screens, and the result was apparently heard on the street as we drove down Seventh Avenue. Crowds stopped, gawked and waved arms along with the singers, and applauded us as we applauded them. Who’s onstage? Who isn’t?

You don’t really know what to make of “The Ride” at first. It’s a commercial enterprise, created by the avant-garde theatrical entrepreneur Michael Counts , written by John Bobey (whose credits include late-night television comedy) and directed by Daniel Goldstein (whose credits include Broadway). Each night a crew of more than 60 technical people, street performers and tour-guide actors with improv-comedy experience tries to combine these diverse styles into an atypical tourist bus ride that costs $59 or $65, depending on the departure time. Plans are to run 364 days a year, with up to 156 rides each week.

These theatrical prices also accompany a bus meant to look theatrical: black and screaming “The Ride” in neon red along the side. Each bus costs $1.3 million. It is the tallest vehicle allowed by law; its audio systems emulate the punch of club sonics; and its cushioned 49 seats face the transparent side of the bus, allowing outsiders to see in, once its 40 video screens and 3,000 LED lights are illuminated. Three buses are touring now, making round trips from the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, where tickets are sold. A fourth is due soon, and in case of success, another four are planned. (There are also more elaborate hopes, for other cities and other countries.)

Forget the ride for a moment: all tour buses should be built this way; you miss one side of the street but get a huge panoramic view of the other. From an ordinary bus you can’t sense the streetscape’s expanse, but here, with windows stretching nearly the length of the bus, when we crossed Broadway at dusk, an hour before theater time, the city looked unearthly, a teeming throng of figures and glaring lights.

Strangely, though, as a tour, “The Ride” was least successful. As our two guides began their opening banter, we might have at first suspected that Scott really was educated in urban planning at Columbia University or that Jackie was a world traveler come home. But there are 18 such Scotts and Jackies, with the same names and script, giving these tours.

The banter incorporated a fairly lame conceit that “The Ride” has been under development since the end of World War II, that it has all the artificial intelligence of HAL from “2001: A Space Odyssey” (with a more vigorous voice, which is heard throughout the tour) and that it is now embarking on “our biggest and boldest experiment to date, to answer the question: What makes New York ... New York — the pulsating capital of the world.”

Such pulsating is better left not talked about, but the guides were apparently supposed to get a subplot going involving Scott’s romantic interest in Jackie, while filling in travel time with improvised dialogue and “fun facts” about the sights: the grime cleaned off the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal in 1998 was a thick layer of tar and nicotine. The Chrysler Building’s spire was secretly prepared and mounted so the result could surprise rivals as the world’s tallest building — but then it was trumped by the Empire State Building.

The finest moments, though, had nothing to do with the city’s dazzling stage sets — its buildings and avenues — but with the great crowds found within them, which is why “The Ride” is best taken when the streets are packed. Before the bus leaves Times Square, its voice draws attention to varied street characters (all in the tour’s employ). A man purchases three hot dogs, then suddenly starts juggling them. Pedestrians look on in shock, less at the accomplishment than at his daring to do something so pointless on jammed sidewalks. A man with a sequined top hat and party paraphernalia reserves his spot for New Year’s Eve; he leaps around in celebration after the bus broadcasts a New Year’s countdown. A sailor just home from World War II bends over to kiss a nurse, recreating the renowned 1945 Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph .

“The Ride,” then, begins in pure silliness, much of it not too funny, but when that suited tap-dancer finishes his bit, the tour takes on a cinematic aura. This is, after all, how so many movies and Broadway shows work. While walking down a street, someone breaks into song or dance, just as strollers do here.

The urban dance scene of musicals is a genre of its own: first there is the surprise of the passersby, then the affectionate acknowledgment of the dance, and soon the whole streetscape is in on it (unless you are like Gene Kelly, singing in the rain in near isolation). It’s the way of Broadway melody, the style of “West Side Story.” And here, too, on “The Ride,” you begin to watch the passersby look in shock and then pleasure at the theatrical indulgence of these people on the sidewalk; you almost expect them to join in.

Two singers dressed as Radio City ushers start their own duo; a ballerina dances in an illuminated tutu around Columbus Circle; a woman in front of Carnegie Hall sings an aria from “Carmen.” (“I just got off the bus from Iowa,” she explains. “I’m hoping if I sing outside here, Mr. Carnegie will pass by and discover me.”) It’s all a version of “42nd Street.”

No one does join in, yet. But you are reminded that one aspect of New York streets is that strange stuff is not that unexpected. It isn’t all that surprising to see someone singing on the street or dancing in the rain; it is only mildly surprising to see a woman lift her shirt.

The effect may have been much more intense in the 19th century when crowds created a different way of walking; the new urban citizen strolled the city and attended to its exotic sensations and shocks, an anonymous wanderer amid all the other wanderers.

Now the unexpected may even be uniting rather than isolating. It is a shared phenomenon, something to be talked about; it is even a matter of pride how much strangeness we have seen. Oddity creates community. I may be giving “The Ride” too much credit. But for all its artifice, it gives us a chance to be reminded about this effect; it looked as if quite a few conversations started on the sidewalk as the bus rocked by. Evidently even the flasher was inspired. And when extraordinary things are done in unison, not just by one eccentric but by a large group, the effect is amplified.

Take a look at the so-called missions of the street-theater group Improv Everywhere, in which hundreds of strangers suddenly freeze in the middle of Grand Central, or, as in its recent “MP3 Experiment Seven,” thousands of listeners simultaneously follow instructions heard over headphones. At first there is a certain implied mockery of those not in on the secret. But ultimately, the large-scale strangeness breaks down isolation with communal comedy. The Improv videos go viral.

Something like this happened in the tour’s final moments, as “The Ride” featured a transparent busload of passengers waving and singing “New York, New York,” as listeners in the streets stared, watched, ran along or even, eventually, joined in. The street is quite a ride.

Schedules, information and tickets for “The Ride” are at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel, 1535 Broadway, at 46th Street; experiencetheride.com, (866) 299-9682.

Tea Around Town NYC: The Most Instagramable Bus Tour Adventure

singing bus tour nyc

Living right next door to NYC, I am always on the hunt for unique experiences in the city. I couldn’t tell you how many times I have seen Tea Around Town on my feed whether it was on Instagram, TikTok, or other blogs, so I was thrilled to join them for an afternoon tea ride with my best friend.

Whether you’ve been eyeing them for some time or are just learning about this unique NYC activity for the first time, I’m here to take you on a virtual tour of Tea Around Town in New York City!

If you’re planning to book this unique NYC activity, don’t forget to use my code KASIA5 for a Tea Around Town discount! Use Top View NYC to book your own afternoon tea time!

All you need to know about tea around town

What is the tea around town experience.

Tea Around Town NYC is a British-style afternoon tea experience but with a twist! Rather than sitting in a tea room, you’re cruising around mid-town in a double-decker pink bus. You’re served a variety of teas along with some bite-sized foods like savory sandwiches, scones, and pastries. In addition, you get to learn about the important NYC landmarks and are immersed in live entertainment by the staff.

Different Ticket Types for Tea Around Town

There are two different ticket tiers for the Tea Around Town experience. You’ll have the option of either the Standard Ticket for $69 and Premium Admission for $109. The difference between the two is supposed to be priority boarding, an expanded menu, and the option of a non-alcoholic mocktail. Both tickets include a branded plastic cup as a souvenir.

When checking in, on my specific tour, there was no distinction between the Premium ticket holders vs Standard ones. Our table was also pre-assigned so priority boarding isn’t a perk if you ask me. In terms of food, the Premium ticket menu has some additional items and you get a choice of non-alcoholic rose or mocktail. If alcohol was indeed included in the higher price, I’d say pay the extra amount. However, with what is currently included and at a difference of almost $40 between the two, I’d say the Standard Option is sufficient unless you’d like the additional food items.

The Tea Around Town Bus

The overly decorated bus was my favorite thing about this tour. The decoration, details, and overall vibe were one of a kind. The top seating was great for viewing and the roof was transparent allowing in extra light. We were seated among a pastel winter wonderland theme and I believe they change the decor seasonally as well.

The seating on the bus is very comfortable and there was also a bathroom on board. I thought that drinking hot tea on a moving bus might be challenging but our driver was super smooth! Happy to say that there were no spills or food drops throughout the tour.

IMG 7787 scaled Local Adventures

Food & Beverages Options

As mentioned earlier, the main difference between the two ticket types is the type of menu you are offered. So let’s dive deeper into what the menu entails! Note that all these items are bite-sized as they are meant to be during teatime.

Both tickets include the following items:

  • Savory: Cucumber & Cream Cheese Sandwich, Light and Green Egg Mayo Sandwich, Truffled Deviled Eggs, Plain Scone with Preserve and Creme on the side
  • Sweets: Chocolate Mousse Tart, Pumpkin Tart, Macaron
  • Tea and Coffee: Choices vary based on the tour, we got offered Earl Grey, Hibiscus Tea and Peppermint (our ride was not being offered coffee and I didn’t inquire about it)

Additional items included on the Premium Menu:

  • Savory: Mini lox Bite on Pumpernickel, Village Rib Sandwich, Mini Lobster Puff
  • Sweet: Cheesecake, Mini Eclair, Lemon Meringue and Pumpkin Cheese Cake (these slightly vary between the tours)
  • Mocktail: Refresh Rose or Mockberrry Mint Delight

Overall I found the food very tasty between all the options! My favorite items were the Village Rib Sandwich and the Cheesecake. The non-alcoholic rose was very nice too but I do wish they served a glass of champagne instead. Teas were indeed delicious but we were only offered 3 out of all the ones the menu lists. Not sure if that’s the case on every ride but you won’t have the choice of all as listed on the menu.

IMG 8508 scaled Local Adventures

Entertainment

The route had two types of entertainment. First, we were given some basic info about the iconic landmarks we drove past, and then second was the staff that sang on the route. Honestly, our performer could have easily been on Broadway! She had an amazing voice and at first, I didn’t even realize she was singing live! She sang some romantic NYC tunes as we sipped on our tea.

The staff taking care of us was lovely and they went above and beyond to make sure you’re happy with your experience.

IMG 7813 scaled Local Adventures

Route Driven

I am including the picture of the route you’ll drive from the Tea Around Town website so you can get an idea of what you’ll see. Note that you don’t pause at any locations, just drive past them. If you’ve never been to NYC, the route will highlight the most popular spots in the city.

FAQ About Tea Around Town in NYC

What should i wear for afternoon tea on the bus.

This is quite a popular activity for girls’ weekend, a birthday or a bachelorette party. You’ll see groups dressed in themes, in pink or in traditional afternoon tea attire. In my opinion it’s a fun way to engage with the activity and lets you take amazing pictures against the stunning background on the bus! However, most people on our tour wore normal casual clothing as well, so if you’re not in the mood for a coordinated outfit, don’t worry! You’ll fit in no matter what!

IMG 7807 jpg scaled Local Adventures

Where does the tour meet?

The tour meets at a location near Bryant Park. They provide the coordinates for you but the bus is slightly up the street. It might not be in the exact location but you can’t miss the giant pink bus parked ahead. There are many (6-10) tours throughout the day so confirm that your bus is the one that’s boarding new people rather than un-loading the previous group.

Boarding the Bus

The check-in process was not smooth at all to be completely transparent. There are no indications of how to line up and who to check in with. You have to scan your tickets with one person and then get checked in by another. No one also checked who had VIP and there was no priority boarding at all. The tables are pre-assigned so it doesn’t really matter when you get on, but I wish the organization was a little less chaotic than it was.

DSC06202 Local Adventures

How long is the experience?

The tour is supposed to be 90 min including the boarding time so you end up on the bus for about ~75 min. It’s more than enough time for this experience.

Are there restrooms on the bus?

Yes, there are restrooms located on the lower level of the bus. There are also public bathrooms in Bryant Park right next to the bus’ meeting point.

Is the tour suitable for dietary restrictions?

Since this is a pre-set menu, if you’re a vegan or have any specific needs, I don’t think this is the experience for you as most of the food choices contain dairy, fish, and meat.

Final Thoughts on Tea Around town NYC

Tea Around Town is a cute and unique NYC activity that you can enjoy with a group or a friend (you do need to book a minimum of two tickets as well so this is not a solo activity option). The bus is stunningly decorated, the food is tasty and the tea is hot! Whether you’re visiting from out of town or are a local, I hope this post gave you some insight into what the Tea Around Town experience entails!

As one of the largest cities in the world, New York City has so much to see and do. That's why many visitors start their trip off with a bus tour to see iconic sights and neighborhoods and get the lay of the land. To help you find the tour that's best for you, U.S. News reviewed traveler sentiment and expert input to determine the top New York bus tours. Read our suggestions below for some of the best bus tours you can book for your next trip to the City That Never Sleeps.

Big Bus Tours

Price: Adults from $80; kids from $70 Duration: 75 to 90 minutes

Big Bus New York offers a hop-on, hop-off tour that features 18 stops at major attractions like Bryant Park, Broadway and St. Patrick's Cathedral, with prerecorded commentary provided along the way. Double-decker buses frequent stops every 20 minutes on the Red Line (which runs through downtown) and every 30 minutes on uptown's Blue Line. The Essential Ticket, which is valid for one day, grants you access to the 90-minute downtown and 75-minute uptown routes and lets you add on extras like tickets for Madame Tussauds, the Empire State Building or a harbor cruise. Big Bus New York is a hit with travelers who appreciate the ability to tailor tours to their interests. Others bemoaned the overcrowded buses and long wait times.

You can also book a Discover Ticket, which explores famous landmarks downtown, or an Explore Ticket, which is a two-day hop-on, hop-off bus tour experience. Big Bus Tours also operates a seasonal night tour.

Tripadvisor Reviews

Tyler Marie was our wonderful guide on this small bus tour of NYC. She was upbeat and so knowledgeable and happily answered our questions. Would definitely recommend this 6 hour tour. Frequent stops at highlights broke up the time nicely. We had fewer than 30 people on our bus. Our tour never felt rushed! Great experience.

Gil was an amazing tour guide. We booked the 6 hour NYC tour and I can not imagine a better way to see all that we saw in half a day. We started in Times Square, we were educated on history and architecture throughout our day. We made stops in Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Madison Square, the 911 Memorial, Ferry to Staten Island w views of The Statue of Liberty, & so much more. Worth every penny!

Lots of information from our lovely tour guide who was very knowledgeable (can't remember her name though, we did the tour on sunday may 21st in English). I would have expected a bit more gospel etc, most time is spent in the bus touring Harlem. It wasn't made clear to us that we needed to leave when the preacher started his part, and it was a bit awkward to walk away when he started his service. There is room for improvement here. Such a cute idea. And the bus is super cute, and the staff is great. The food was even decent (i didn't expect amazing on a bus). I liked the teas (4 were offered). I expected this to be a tour, but they only pointed out a few things. There was singing and silence, but i felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities to share facts or even stories. All in all, not something i would recommend, but if it sounds fun and your expectations are moderate, maybe you'll like it. I just really wanted it to be better.

**This review is for Tea Around Town in Philadelphia. It's the same company but they don't have a separate Yelp listing.** My sister and I took our mom to this on Mother's day. Let's stick to the positives: 1. The staff was great! On to the challenges: 1. When they say petite, they mean petite. All things considered, this was considerably smaller compared to typical afternoon tea offerings. And it really didn't taste good. Most of the food was stale. 2. You don't get full cups of tea. Tea is served in the tumbler they give and the server warned it was a "serving size". Some of the servings measured less than 1 cup. We had to request refills multiple times. They also were running low on sugar, so we had to request it. 3. You only received 3 tea tastings. And again, they were very small pours. Overall I had a good time and the people on the tour with us made it fun. Again, the staff was great. I'm also aware that this is for the experience, content creation, something different. However, it is in no way worth the cost.

I booked the "Luxe" Afternoon Tea experience on Tea Around Town's double-decker bus for a special Mother's Day outing for me and my 3 children (party of 4). At $636, it was a splurge, but the promise of priority boarding, private tables, sky deck seating with 360 degree incredible views, and a relaxing afternoon tea sounded perfect. Let me tell you, it was anything but. Broken Promises: * Seated Separately: To my utter shock, they split our party up! We were not even seated together. Two of us at a tiny table, the other two kids at another behind us. How is this "Luxe"? I nearly cried..... * Missing Views: The "360-degree views" advertised were a total lie from where we were seated at the back of the bus. We basically looked up at a burlap shade. * Priority Boarding a Myth: Despite the "priority boarding" perk, it seemed like a free-for-all. We ended up with a terrible tables and view because of the disorganization. * Champagne Mishap: The table next to us got complimentary champagne while we weren't offered any. The server even apologized to the table next to me for the "accident" as he offered them the champagne. What kind of inconsistency is this? * Audio Nightmare: The microphone had terrible feedback, making it impossible to hear the tour commentary. On top of that, loud conversations at nearby tables made it even worse. Not Worth the Price! For $636, this experience was a complete disappointment. The table seating for 4, disorganization, broken promises, and overall lack of attention to detail made it a stressful and frustrating outing. Don't waste your money! Save yourself the trouble and skip Tea Around Town. There are far better ways to spend your money in NYC!

Ok .... The concept was a cute idea. Not really a tour bus I it doesn't go far the few landmarks they announced we barely paid attention to..... we left from Bryant park and he showed us Bryant Park .... Lost stars due to the bus being late and we didn't get compensated on the end as a matter of fact it ended 20 minutes early.... A rip off . He announced 6 teas we received 5. The bus was cutely decorated. There was a guy singing which was nice. The vibe as a whole was very cute. Was it worth the money? Absolutely not! Would I do it again? No Do I regret making this purchase? No , it was a great experience for what it was. My niece didn't care for the food but I've been to high tea's before and the food was comparable... same scones, sandwiches and desserts. I did have us eat before hand because I knew what to expect as far as food. We received plastic tumblers which is cute as a take away but tea in a glass would've been nice ...At least I thought until the tables that had mocktails glasses flew off their tables during a hard stop.... It was raining so we didn't get out door photo ops. They have a bathroom. A bus sized bathroom but super cutely decorated. Would I recommend? Yeah go for it if you got the money to spend do it but don't make a financial sacrifice it's not worth it. If you're looking to take your little one to have tea this isn't worth it.

Theoretically, this is such a cute concept Tea on a bus going around NYC? Love the idea. I would not say my time was awful as the crew from the ride were fantastic, informative, friendly, etc. I feel the rides should be extended on account I felt slightly rushed to finish my food and tea. Also, when departing the bus after the event I saw that there was still food set up for people to have on the next ride. However, that food was all set up through the whole ride of the tour. The tea selection was nice however, they should give you different cups to have your tea. I think also their should be an opportunity for people who need wheelchair accessibility to go on a ride. I could be wrong, but I did not see any ramps, etc. displayed. There was a little confusion pertaining to diet when ordering the tickets there was no option for gluten-free diet. I think it should be more clear for that so somebody with any problems could have food they can eat. However, when the server comes when you arrive, they do ask if you had food allergies, but they would've been no way to address them as the food was already placed and prepared. This is constructive criticism as stated before I really think this is a fun bus ride is to enjoy tea. Cheers.

We did this tea excursion for our daughter's special birthday. It was a nice experience and comfortable. The staff and entertainment was fun. The tour of midtown was nice. The food is average but you are really paying for the experience. You go away with your tea sippy cup as a souvenir.

We booked a trip in Philly. The staff was fun and the idea was great, but the execution was poor. Stale bread with scanty fillings, lukewarm tea, dirty silverware (it was replaced). I expected much more and was disappointed. Wouldn't recommend it.

Photo of Shelley Y.

Was able to experience this during a work trip for a team building outing. The concept is a cute twist on the tour buses that are seen around the city. The finger foods were delicious and there was quite a bit of selection! I believe our ride was 75 minutes but it went by way too fast. I wasn't able to try all the food since I was busy looking out the window. The teas seem to be seeped from tea bags and they offer prosecco or sparkly rose too. Whoever was singing was also phenomenal!!

We probably should have checked Yelp before booking this. Over the holidays we saw this bus driving around the city quite a bit and were intrigued by the premise of it. Even though we live locally we thought hey, could be fun. We've both done proper high afternoon before and although we didn't expect the bus to be anything even remotely similar, we did expect it to be worth the money. It was not. A lot of other reviews already spoke about this, but tea for two with the premium package and champagne clocked in at over $300. We ended up getting this as a gift, but I still feel like an idiot. What did we NOT get? The 9 teas promised. We got 5, and the last one was poured 5 minutes before we finished the tour. We also did not get the champagne. Apparently they switched to mocktails "a few weeks ago" but failed to disclose this. We even got champagne wristbands slapped on as we boarded the bus sooo....okay? We essentially drove around traffic for 75 minutes with some tea and some food. The majority of the food was decent (the lobster thing stood out to me and some of the sweets were good), but there was not nearly enough of anything to justify the price. We've done proper afternoon tea at the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa and even with 4 glasses of bubbles it didn't cost as much as this. So...my feelings on this experience have been made pretty clear. It's a cool idea but poorly executed and extremely overpriced. That extra star? For the staff. They were super nice and served tea on a moving bus in Manhattan. Gotta give them some credit for that.

Have you seen tea around town bus tour in NYC? You need to try this cutest double decker pink bus, it's a super cozy and romantic atmosphere. It's a 90 minute experience to enjoy a 3 course afternoon tea with bottomless tea, champagne, live music and beautiful view of the Big Apple.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!
