putrajaya tourist places

You might want to know what are the Top Putrajaya Attractions if you are thinking of visiting Putrajaya,

Putrajaya , Malaysia's federal administrative capital, is a modern planned city with construction having started in only the late 1990s and no expense has been spared in creating a world class modern living and working environment.

It might not be the most exciting city on the planet but it sure is pretty. About 38% of the city's 4900 hectare area has been set aside as green areas and indeed its parks are, in my opinion, the top Putrajaya attractions.

A central feature to the city is a man-made 650 hectare lake whose tentacles extend into wetland zones, boating and water sports areas. The lake is designed to cool down the city as well as help with flood control and water purification.

Spanning these stretches of water are some spectacular bridges which are illuminated with changing coloured lights at night.

Add to this a number of grand Government buildings, mosques, palaces and monuments and you have a visually appealing cityscape.

Here is my list of the Top Putrajaya Attractions

Cruise Tasik

Cruise Tasik Putrajaya

One of the best ways to see the city's sights is by taking a 45 minute daytime or evening sightseeing cruise on a comfortable air-conditioned 76 seater cruise boat. Gondola-style boat rides are also available.

Marina Putrajaya

Marina Putrajaya

With a musical fountain, extreme water sports, indoor swimming pool, gymnasium and much more there is plenty to do at Marina Putrajaya.

Putrajaya Botanical Gardens

Putrajaya has some of the nicest urban parks in the country and my favourite is the Putrajaya Botanical Garden, a beautifully manicured park showcasing tropical plant and tree specimens.

Putra Mosque

Putra Mosque

One of Putrajaya's top landmarks, this imposing pink granite mosque is capable of accommodating 15,000 worshippers. Elements of its basement design have similarity to the King Hassan Mosque in Casablanca while the minaret is thought to resemble the Sheikh Omar Mosque in Baghdad.

Perdana Putra (Prime Minister's Office)

Prime Minister's Office  Perdana Putra

This huge Moghul-style green domed building is the seat of power in Malaysia and contains the offices of the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and various other arms of government.

PICC

Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC)

This is a massive convention centre with a distinctive architectural design said to be shaped like a royal belt buckle. It is not utilised as much as it could be but is worth visiting if only for the fine views from its hilltop position.

One of Putrajaya's unique bridges.

Bridges

Bridges might seem an unusual choice for top Putrajaya attractions but the city's unique and distinctive bridges are something special. They include the Putra Bridge, the Seri Perdana Bridge, the Seri Bakti Bridge, the Seri Gemilang Bridge and the Seri Wawasan Bridge. Some of them are brightly illuminated at night. Malaysia's premier annual flower and garden festival,  Putrajaya Floria,  has a new permanent site near the Seri Saujana Bridge.

Putrajaya Challenge Park

Putrajaya Challenge Park

This is a park for adventure and thrill-seekers with a giant indoor rock climbing centre, an extensive concrete BMX and skate-board park and cross-country mountain bike trails. Definitely one of the top Putrajaya attractions.

Millennium Monument

Seri Perdana (PM's Residence)

Then there is the Museum of Nature where you can find stuffed examples of endangered Malaysian mammals and a collection of exotic insects.

For those who are skilled swimmers, I recommend taking a dip in the adult pool, which is Olympic-sized and has previously hosted the SEA Games.

Especially during sunset, the backdrop of the orange-hued sky will undoubtedly make your photos even more breathtaking. In short, it is an enticing spot in Putrajaya for a photoshoot that will not disappoint any photography enthusiasts.

The mosque can accommodate up to 15,000 worshippers in its two levels, with the ground floor designated for male worshippers and the upper floor for female worshippers. Its strategic location near the lake adds a touch of natural serenity, creating a peaceful atmosphere for visitors.

As we step into Masjid Putrajaya, we are greeted by a specially designed pedestrian path that eases the access for government officials to the mosque, which is only open during Friday prayers. The term “masjid” itself is deeply intertwined with religious values, making it a place of spiritual significance and a fulfilling destination for our vacation.

The architectural design of Masjid Putrajaya, with its interconnected pedestrian walkways and surrounding buildings, reflects the philosophy that religion should not be separated from daily activities and administration.

My Visit to Masjid Putra in Putrajaya

Our vacation in Putrajaya would never be complete without visiting Masjid Putra. This mosque can be labeled as one of the most popular landmarks in Putrajaya. Built with an estimated cost of RM 250 million, the mosque beautifully combines the traditional Malay and Middle Eastern architectural concepts. It would be a missed opportunity if we didn’t take the time to visit Masjid Putra for prayers and capture some memorable pictures with our family.

The location of Masjid Putra is strategically situated near government administrative buildings, making it a common place for congregational prayers among dignitaries and our country’s top leaders, especially on Fridays. Interestingly, the mosque also has underground access from several locations in Putrajaya, providing convenience to government employees working nearby. This underground passage is only open on Fridays during the Jumaat prayers.

In addition, the mosque’s surroundings are adjacent to the beautiful Tasik Putrajaya (Putrajaya Lake) and Dataran Putra (Putra Square), making it an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts to capture breathtaking panoramic landscapes with iconic subjects of Putrajaya. The picturesque setting offers a perfect opportunity for us to capture lasting memories of our time in Putrajaya.

A Glimpse in History: Why is it Named Putrajaya?

Putrajaya came from Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, who was known as the founding father of Malaysia. Breaking down the name further, “Putra” translates to “prince” or “male child” in Malay, while the word “Jaya” means “success.” So, if you translate the word “Putrajaya,” it means victorious men or victorious people.

Putrajaya was declared one of the federal territories in Malaysia in 2001. It is often referred to as the “other” capital of the country. The planned city of Putrajaya houses some Malaysian government offices, including the current Prime Minister’s office.

Kuala Lumpur was the first appointed administrative and financial capital of Malaysia. However, because of the increasing traffic in Kuala Lumpur and the rise of tourist visits, KL found it difficult to perform administrative tasks. This led to the development of Putrajaya in 1995 so Malaysia could have an effective administrative hub for its government offices. In 1999, they moved the prime minister’s office to Putrajaya, while the Federal Court and the second royal palace followed.

While Kuala Lumpur is still the National Capital of Malaysia, Putrajaya is considered the administrative capital.

Where is Putrajaya?

Malaysia’s green city, Putrajaya, is about 15 miles (25 km) south of Kuala Lumpur, with a driving distance of 21.7 miles (35km). If you’re going on a day trip to Putrajaya from KL, it can take 30 to 45 minutes to get there, depending on the traffic conditions and mode of transportation.

How to Get To Putrajaya From KL?

  • Take the KLIA Ekspres train: The fastest way to reach Putrajaya from KL is to take the KLIA Ekspres Train at KL Sentral and alight at the Putrajaya & Cyberjaya station. This is also the cheapest way to get to Putrajaya for RM 14.00, with the travel time only taking 19 minutes.

Take photogenic photos at the China Malaysia Friendship Garden

Visit the scenic China-Malaysia Friendship Garden for a moment of relaxation. This friendship garden was built in 2015 to commemorate China and Malaysia’s diplomatic ties. As you step inside the friendship garden, you’ll feel like you’re in the scene of a Chinese period drama. Inside, you’ll see majestic and stunning structures, including the moon gate, which makes an excellent backdrop for some photos. You’ll also find plenty of decor with Chinese elements, such as Qilin statues, hanging red lanterns, and more. The China-Malaysia Friendship Garden is filled with plants and trees like bamboo, bonsai trees, weeping willows, and Maple trees you’ll find in traditional gardens in China.

Is Putrajaya Worth Visiting?

In a nutshell, is Putrajaya worth a spot on your travel list? Yes, it is, but only if you’re staying in KL for at least 4 days or if you live in or around Kuala Lumpur.

Putrajaya, the gleaming jewel of Malaysia’s modern urban planning, boasts a unique allure worth exploring. With its futuristic architecture, tranquil landscapes, and a tapestry of cultural delights, it’s a destination that shouldn’t be overlooked.

However, here’s the inside scoop: if you’re just breezing through Kuala Lumpur on a whirlwind tour, you might want to prioritize the city’s more iconic attractions. Putrajaya truly shines when you have time to savor its attractions without rushing.

On the other hand, if you’re a local or an expat in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya can be the perfect place for a weekend escape or a quick day trip. It’s a different world altogether, just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of the capital.

"Federal Territory of Malaysia"

Putrajaya tourism.

Located in Malaysia, Putrajaya also referred to as the Federal Territory of Putrajaya is a city situated towards the south of Kuala Lumpur. Putrajaya is known for its well built late 20th-century architecture of the Putrajaya Mosque and Iranian style architecture of the Putra Bridge which overlooks the famous man-made Putrajaya Lake.

In Sanskrit, ‘Putra’ means prince or male child and ‘Jaya’ means success or victory. The city was named Putrajaya after the first Malaysian Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. It is based on the theme of a garden city which is modern, exquisite, futuristic and Malaysian but is in absolute harmony with the natural environment. The streets of Putrajaya provide a European feel while the government buildings provide a blend of modern architecture and Islamic Arts. In the north of the city is the Putrajaya Botanical Garden, the biggest botanical garden in Malaysia (covering an area of 92 hectares) which contains Asian and African plants. The China-Malaysia Friendship Garden is a lakeside park which is home to varied flora.  The man-made 650-hectare lake provides scope for water activities and boating and the spectacular bridges are illuminated with changing colour lights providing beautiful views at night.  Almost 38 per cent of Putrajaya is covered with green areas and wetlands meant to preserve its ecosystem while imparting a retreat from the strain of a modern lifestyle with its atmosphere and incredible attractions. The palaces, mosques and monuments in the city are other visually appealing settings.

KUCHING: Sarawak is waiting for the Sabah government to finalise its stand on whether or not tourism should be included in the concurrent list in the Federal Constitution before negotiating further with Putrajaya on the matter.

State Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting said the Sarawak government was consistent in its stand that the Constitution should be amended to move tourism from the federal list to the concurrent list in the Ninth Schedule.

However, he said the Sabah government had proposed instead that tourism be taken out from the lists in the Ninth Schedule and remain a residual matter.

"A further discussion between the state attorney generals' chambers of Sarawak and Sabah was initiated on Oct 13 last year to finalise the stand.

"We are waiting for the Sabah government to finalise its stand before this matter can be brought up to the federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry and subsequently to the technical committee of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister for further action," he told the Sarawak Legislative Assembly during question time on Thursday (May 9).

Ting said the Sarawak government remained committed to pursue and safeguard the state's special rights and position as enshrined in MA63, as well as Sarawakians' aspirations for greater autonomy.

With tourism in the concurrent list, he said, Sarawak would have the authority to make its own laws relating to tourism.

He said this included matters such as promoting investment in tourism businesses; developing human resources; improving state management of the sector; facilitating community-based and cross-border tourism; and collecting tourism tax.

He said the state would also be able to issue licences and approvals for tourist guides, the Sarawak-Malaysia My Second Home programme, homestays, tourism training institutions and tourism vehicles.
