5 Reasons to See Morocco By Motorcycle

When riding a motorbike through North Africa, it’s more about the journey than the destination.

A foreign land, a new language, sketchy roads, and a beast of machinery between your legs—these are the trappings of an epic adventure. And in Morocco , where the sea meets North Africa ’s Sahara, the open road is best explored by motorcycle.

Avoid the big highways between Marrakech , Fes, Essaouira, Imlil, and beyond, winding instead through tiny villages and between pop-up markets that crowd the streets, stopping at whim to sip scalding, sweet mint tea through a grin on your sand-burned face. There’s a particular magic that two-steps throughout the country, the kind you want to reach out and wrap yourself in without actually altering its native fabric, woven from indigenous Berber, Arabic, and European influences.

In Morocco, incomparably stunning architecture and design masquerade as modest constructions. The beautiful monotone howl from mosques reverberates across the medina’s maze and up mountainsides, filling every open space both outside and within you until it encircles your very spine in prayer.

That’s where Morocco lives—behind the walls, in the spaces in between—and while there are many ways to wrap yourself in a Moroccan cocoon, here are five reasons to consider exploring the North African country by motorcycle.

a motorcyclist in Morocco

A cyclist rides a motorbike through the Sahara Desert in Morocco.

It’s romantic.

We’re not talking heart-eyes, voice-purring romance, but the kind that 18th- and 19th-century Brits like Keats and Byron got down with, that capital-R Romance.

There’s an intimacy built into motorcycle travel that you just don’t get during car road trips, even with all the windows down. It’s a method of travel that puts you in harmony with not only the land but also the people. A unique sort of joy piggybacks on the dirt that collects around your visor and bandana, lending the illusion of premature wrinkles as you smile. On a motorcycle, you’re forced to feel your way through space as you lean with the bike into each curve, fully inhabiting the moment. A shift in the air alerts your body to a change in habitat before your eyes can see it—from the clinging heat of open plains to refreshing cool of the Middle Atlas mountains.

It’s cost effective.

Whether you rent your bike in Spain and take it on a ferry nine miles across the Strait of Gibraltar or start in Marrakech, exploring Morocco by motorbike won’t seriously burden your wallet. While prices vary depending on the type of bike you secure, a round-trip, 10-day traverse of the northern half of the country from coast to mountain might run about 5,500 Moroccan dirham (around U.S. $580) for the rental, gas included. Add an extra 150 Moroccan dirham (around U.S. $16) for the speeding ticket you’ll inevitably get from the cheery police that wait along the road at makeshift ticketing stalls resembling lemonade stands.

There’s the badass factor.

a motorcyclist in Morocco

The Atlas Mountains rise behind a motorcylist touring through Morocco.

Sometimes your ego is going to call shotgun, and every now and then it’s just more fun to let it ride with you than to fight it. Let it go ham each time you swing your weight across your trusty mechanical steed to dismount in front of a place built for a king—perhaps literally, depending on where you stay. At the Royal Mansour , a luxury oasis that the king of Morocco had constructed just inside the old medina in Marrakech, you’re greeted with the dancing eyes and tickled smiles of bellmen standing outside the hotel’s soaring, immaculately carved gates. No matter how filthy or disheveled you are, there’s a sort of delight and camaraderie exchanged as they offer to store your sweat-caked helmet.

Whether arriving at your riad , a traditional Moroccan home, in a cosmopolitan city or rolling through a small coastal town, you’re a spectacle—a one-man parade, and though it’s not exactly becoming to admit, the feeling is playfully empowering.

Navigation is easy.

Sure, the massive roundabouts filled with taxis, pickup trucks, bicycles, and tiny mopeds piled with families of three can look overwhelming to the non-Moroccan eye. But patterns are patterns, and learning the ways of the road takes just a few minutes of observation while following the natural flow of traffic.

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

The bike’s horn will help you communicate on the road, so make sure to test it before accepting the rental. While the country’s primary languages are Arabic and French, road signs use both Arabic and Latin script along with arrows that transcend language barriers, taking a significant amount of guesswork out of navigation. The free SIM cards available at the airport make it even easier. Simply look for people clothed in orange Maroc Telecom shirts, often located both before clearing immigration and just outside the airport. They’ll scan your passport and give you a SIM that’s pre-loaded with 1G data and good for an hour’s worth of calls in the country.

You’ve got total freedom.

Morocco’s transportation infrastructure is solid. Train service spiderwebs across the country’s main cities and tourist destinations, and cars-for-hire (be prepared to haggle) will take you everywhere else. It’s a perfectly adequate option ... for those without a motorcycle license (and yes, you need a class M license or equivalent to rent a bike in Morocco).

Trains often arrive hours late, and that’s with an “on-time” departure. You’re also bound to a schedule, limiting your spontaneity to a timetable. And then there’s the stress of securing your ticket ahead of time (bye-bye impulsive decisions) and getting to and from the station, your punctuality necessary regardless of when the train actually leaves. Of course, that’s all part of any adventure in any new country, but it’s also a part that can easily be had (and enjoyed) just once: on your way to secure or drop off the motorbike.

Morocco Motorcycle Tour Season

What is the best time of year for a motorbike trip in Morocco ? The best seasons for travelling in Morocco are spring and autumn. In the spring, the landscape is green, the peaks still covered with snow and the heat still bearable. In April-May and September-October, the temperatures are more pleasant. However Morocco’s climate can vary substantially depending on the region and oceanic, Mediterranean, mountain or Saharan influences. If you are not deterred by the heat or if you are leaving on a trek in the mountains, it is possible to travel between May and September.

During summer in Morocco, enjoy relaxing on the beach or going for a refreshing swim. The summer sea breezes result in mild weather along the coastline and the temperature is generally very pleasant. During winter in Morocco, from December to February, the sky is blue and the temperatures exceed 20° celsius. The season is quite suitable for hiking on foot or on camelback in the Sahara desert. Some bold travelers even trek beyond Marrakech in winter to go skiing. Spring and autumn are the best times of year to embark on a motorcycle tour of Morocco .

Explore Nature on a Morocco Motorbike Tour

Morocco’s geography is a combination of mountains, plains and deserts. The country is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The country’s north is marked by high mountains, with the Rif mountains running along the Mediterranean coast. In the inland areas, Atlas is the only mountain range in Maghreb. Middle Atlas, the land of hot springs, is a true playground for a motorcycle tour in Morocco .

The country’s highest peak, Djebel Toubkal, reaches an altitude of 4,187 m in the High Atlas. This mountain is characterised by two major sites: Todgha Gorge and Dadès Gorge. These locations are Meccas for those who take motorcycle trips in Morocco . The Rif is the extension of the Betic Cordillera in southern Spain. It is a very beautiful green region, covered with forests. Across the Anti-Atlas Mountains to the south is the Chebbi desert, with sand dunes reminiscent of the Sahara Desert. Characterized by rocky and sometimes sandy terrain, this region has mountains dotted with life-giving oases. Here you will find nomadic herders living and working on the date harvests.

Motorcycle Tours in Morocco: A Land of History and Culture

The Berbers were the first peoples known to occupy Morocco. Today the Berbers, also known by the contemporary name Amazigh, comprise the principal indigenous population living in these mountains and deserts. In the 7th century, the Arabs who landed from Tunisia enforced the Islamic religion in the region. In 788, Idris I, a descendent of the Prophet, was elected local head and created the city of Fez. His son later designated the city as the imperial capital. Later in the 12th century, the Berbers seized power and established Marrakesh. The perimeters of the empire extended from Spain to Libya through Timbuktu. During a motorcycle trip in Morocco , you will have the opportunity to discover the wonders of the cities of Casablanca, Fez and Marrakesh.

France set up its protectorate in 1912 and colonisation continued till the Second World War when France became weak. During this time, the idea of a nation emerged in Morocco and its independence was recognised in 1956. The Kingdom of Morocco entered the modern world with the reign of Hassan II. The country seized Western Sahara, which was till then in the hands of the Spanish. Then it was the turn of Mohammed VI to ascend to the throne in 1999. He is still heading this constitutional monarchy and is immensely popular in Morocco. With a history extending back many centuries, you will have a thrilling time exploring on a Morocco motorbike tour .

This was a great trip and provided a real insight into Morocco. We elected to ride our own bikes down from the Ferry at Santander which added an extra element to the trip and gave a real flavour for rural Spain

Jay clearly loves Morocco and the overnight stops and routes were all well planned and provided a real feel for the country from the cities at the North to the more remote Gorges, High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert towards the South. The local people were friendly, and the food was good. Most importantly though the riding and scenery was amazing, as Morocco has so much to offer.

The big non bike event was an hours quad biking in the sand dunes of the Sahara which was brilliant fun and is strongly recommended.

We had a brilliant trip and all thanks to Jay and Ray (Group leader) for making it such an eventful and enjoyable trip

Book and go with Overland Motorcycle Tours would be my advice. I have done loads of touring with mates and just tried to find places and campsites to stay in along the way. This tour took all the hassle and stress out of the trip and although we got treated to some nice, clean modern hotels i much preferred the traditional Moroccan kasbahs/hotels but that’s just my preference. I started my trip from Plymouth and rode through Spain to Tarifa and also from Tarifa to Santander once the Morocco part had been done. The Spanish routes were self guided and the scenery and routes were spectacular. I thought Jay and Raz were excellent in guiding us and they themselves were also part of the experience.

Highly recommended. Good value tour of Morocco. I’ve done a lot and am confident in solo motorcycle travel (on-road). I hadn’t realised quite how much difference it would make to have someone else taking care of all the route planning and accommodation – I easily did more than twice the riding than if I’d had to manage all the logistics myself. Great routes, great accommodation, good variety of terrain and places to stay. Advance communication was fantastic, clear and responsive. Communication on the tour wasn’t always so clear, it was never a big problem, but I think that’s the only thing that could be improved a bit. Jay arranged bike hire for me from Malaga airport which was easy and problem free. From the description I thought there would be a little more off-tarmac than there was, but the roads were very mixed and I was happy with overall riding experience. I hired an Enfield Himalayan, as did one other, and we both thought we were on exactly the right bikes for Morocco – fun, confidence inspiring, and we got to explore what the bikes could do. There were others on much bigger bikes, some of whom seemed to be struggling a bit, and who as far as I could see mostly didn’t get to use the immense power of the bigger bikes. Final tip, pack light, one set of kit for riding including wet weather options (luckily not needed), one set of quick dry off bike clothes and some washing liquid, I washed something each evening, always more or less dry by the time we set off.

Dave & Clare

Cheers Jay, great trip to Morocco, it was everything I was hoping for, the scenery was fantastic, like being in a different country every day, really enjoyed your self guided routes through Spain too 👍

Extremely enjoyable trip, from Malaga to Merzouga on the edge of the Sahara and back. Winding tarmac roads that seem to never end, sandy gravel tracks on the edge of red sand dunes and mountain rocky trails with cliff like edges, its simply hard to get better! Traditional tagine meals where delicious and the hotels were a great experience of raw, comfy and wonderful. The local people were very friendly and accommodating throughout the Morocco. Jay and Raz ( Organiser and Guide) took great care of all our needs and any issues or concerns our group had were soon sorted out “Thanks Lads” . The bike I hired was the business, it was light and very capable for all terrains ( New honda Transalp). It was also great meet new people and have lots of fun while doing so.

morocco motorcycle trip

Malaga - Tangier

Our two-week journey into Morocco starts with a leisure ride through the beautiful ‘Costa del Sol’ highway out of Malaga to Algeciras, stopping on our way to admire spectacular views of the Strait of Gibraltar. Once in Algeciras, we will board the ferry for the 90-minute crossing to mysterious Tangier, in times past home to shady merchants, spies, and smugglers. Tangier is now one of the most prosperous cities in the country, due to its strategic and ideal geographic location for the commercial maritime traffic between North Africa and Europe. Once we clear customs and immigration in Tangier, we will ride across the city center and head to our hotel located by the seaside on the outskirts of the town. A first Moroccan dinner at the hotel and a great rest night will get us ready to start exploring Morocco tomorrow!

morocco motorcycle trip

Tangier - Casablanca

We will leave Tangier on coastal roads to our first stop of the day in Asilah, the ‘Pearl of the Atlantic’, where we will take a short tour of its small and cozy Medina. Keeping riding south, we will pass through cities such as Larache and Kenitra, two significant centers for Moroccan trade. In Rabat, the political capital of the country, we will stop for lunch and visit the famous Hassan II Mausoleum. In the afternoon, we move on to Casablanca, Morocco’s economic capital. Upon our arrival, we should have enough time to tour the impressive Hassan II Mosque, the second largest in the Islamic world behind Mecca in Saudi Arabia. In the evening, a traditional and delicious dinner will mark the end of our second day on the road.

morocco motorcycle trip

Casablanca - Essaouira

We continue to ride South to the coastal gem of El Jadida, once an important port for Morocco’s maritime trade. Beautiful cliffs and small fishing villages mark the spectacular coastal road to our next stop, Safi, in an area considered to be one of the world’s most productive fishing zones. Many of us will be surprised to learn that Morocco is the largest canned sardine exporter in the world and the leading supplier of sardines to the European market. After lunch on the beach in Oualidia, we will stay on idyllic seaside roads to our stop for the night, Essaouira. Time to watch the sun setting at sea, take a walk around the old Medina and enjoy a delicious dinner in this beautiful coastal city.

morocco motorcycle trip

Essaouira - Taghazout

Today we will have a short but intense ride on twisty roads over spectacular cliffs. We will cross the Tamri National Park, where we will stop to photograph the fantastic coastal views around Cape Rhir. This is a popular area for the residents of Agadir, offering accessible beaches and easy transportation for weekend and holiday getaways. We will continue enjoying the road curves until we reach Taghazout, a well-known surfing mecca in Morocco, where an unusually mild year-round climate attracts foreign tourists and many locals as well. We can visit the village and have dinner at our beachfront resort for a good night’s rest.

morocco motorcycle trip

Taghazout - Marrakesh

It is time to say goodbye to the Atlantic coast and start our journey inland towards the mountains of the Anti-Atlas. We will head towards Taroudant, in an area rich in sugar, cotton, and rice, and then to one of the most spectacular passes in the whole country, the Tizi-n-Test. This road connects the valley of the Souss River with the Toubkal National Park, with spectacular views and landscapes that we will forever remember as one of the highlights of our Moroccan experience. After the stop for lunch at Tizi-n-Test, we will continue to Asni through the Imlil Valley, enjoying some of the best scenery Morocco has to offer. After checking into our hotel in Marrakesh, we will go for a walk through the world-famous Jemaa el-Fna Square to start our visit to this most extraordinary city.

morocco motorcycle trip

We will have the whole day to explore the best of Marrakesh, and it will be an intense one! After breakfast, we will leave our hotel on a guided tour of the city, undoubtedly the best way to spend a full day getting to know one of the most sought-after destinations in North Africa. On our itinerary, famous landmarks like the historic Bahia Palace, the Menara Gardens, the spectacular Jemaa El-Fna Square, a cheerful Berber pharmacy, the majestic Koutoubia Mosque, and of course the famous Medina of Marrakech. The old Medina, rich in colors, sounds, and flavors, is a perfect place to do a little shopping and bring home some souvenirs from our exciting journey into Morocco.

morocco motorcycle trip

Marrakesh - Boumalne

We leave Marrakesh behind as we cross the Great Atlas Mountain range once again, this time through the mythical Tizi-n-Tichka Pass. We will stop at the summit to contemplate a spectacular landscape, and then take a secondary, less-traveled road to Teoulet. Its Kasbah is one of the most beautiful in Morocco, and since it is located off the conventional tourist route, it does not usually have many visitors. Riding on an ancient caravan route between the Draa Valley and sub-Saharan Africa will be another experience not to be forgotten! After lunch, we will follow the same road to Ait Benhaddou, an ancient Kasbah famous for being a natural scenario for many famous Hollywood movies like Gladiator, Cleopatra, Asterix and Obelix, and Prince of Persia, among others. Several episodes of the popular Game of Thrones TV series were also shot in the old Kasbah. We will be able to walk through its alleys and admire the incredible architecture. Our destination for the day is Boumalne, famous for its beautiful, charming landscapes, as well as its famous gorges.

morocco motorcycle trip

Boumalne - Merzouga

Our route today takes us first to a short detour through a breathtaking road to the Dades Gorges viewpoint. Time for tea on the highest point of the trail, with plenty of opportunities for photos of the fascinating switchbacks below us. Next comes the famous Todra Gorges, another incredible canyon not to be missed, and then continue to Alnif. The landscape keeps changing and becomes more and more captivating as we enter Berber territory. The setting sun gives a golden glow to the rocks and the terrain that surrounds us as we arrive at the holy town of Rissani, one of the most important centers for sub-Saharan commerce. From there, we take the road to Merzouga, a small Moroccan town in the Sahara Desert, near the Algerian border. The Berber people and a sea of golden dunes will make us realize we are finally in the real desert. A full-featured luxury tent in the sand will be our home for tonight: great food, mesmerizing Berber music, and the night sky filled with more stars than you can possibly imagine. Get ready to be thrilled!

morocco motorcycle trip

After a short morning ride to our hotel on the edge of the sand dunes, we will have a full day for ourselves to enjoy the desert! There are many optional activities that you can choose from: 4x4 excursions, ATV rentals, visits to the little villages of African natives to learn about their culture and traditions, and more. These excursions are not included in our tour, but we will happily help you secure your spot in your activities of choice. As a great alternative after these first intense days of riding in Morocco, you can choose to simply enjoy the warm weather and sunbathe by the hotel’s swimming pool, accompanied by local snacks and your favorite drinks. Not a bad option if you feel you need some resting! After dinner, a nice walk to the dunes nearby will give us the opportunity to fully appreciate another tantalizing desert sky.

morocco motorcycle trip

Merzouga - Fez

Our route today is certainly the most diverse in terms of scenery. Starting in the desert towards Erfoud, we will continue on the road to reach Er-Rachidia, a military and college city, full of life with a large number of young people on its streets. Moving on into the Ziz Gorges and a river covered entirely by an impressive kilometer-long palm grove, we will follow the route that will take us to Midelt, a small town famous for its large fossil mines. After lunch, we will start crossing the Atlas Mountains. Depending on the time of the year, we may notice the temperature gradually decreasing, and we recommend bringing along a warm jacket or sweater just in case. The sands of the desert give way now to green cedar forests surrounding us everywhere we look. We will continue our ride to Ifrane for a short rest and some reinvigorating tea. Ifrane, also called the ‘Switzerland of Morocco’, is known for its alpine-style architecture and nearby ski slopes and forests. A short final sprint for the day will take us to the imperial city of Fez, where a comforting dinner will be our reward from another extraordinary day of riding.

morocco motorcycle trip

The last rest day on our road trip is an opportunity for us to know Fez, the second-largest city in Morocco, after Casablanca. The Medina of Fez is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is believed to be one of the world’s largest urban pedestrian zones. Modern Fez mainly consists of two old medina quarters, ‘Fes el Bali’ and ‘Fes Jdid’, and the modern urban area of Ville Nouvelle, constructed during the French colonial era. We will have a full day to explore everything Fez has to show us and then experience some of the most traditional dishes from Northern Morocco in our evening dinner.

morocco motorcycle trip

Fez - Chefchaouen

Today we will leave Fez heading north towards the Rif area via the Ouergha Valley. The road will take us around the Bouhouda swamp, winding its way through the crests of the Riferous mountains and its magnificent views, passing through rural souks (Arab markets, or bazaars) until we reach Ketama. Arriving in Chefchaouen, we will check into our beautiful hotel and then enjoy the rest of the day getting to know the ‘Blue City’, as this charming town is also known. The gorgeous blue alleyways and blue-washed buildings will leave a memorable impression as we prepare to leave Morocco the next day. Time to savor more local specialties and to do some last-minute shopping in the leather and weaving workshops lining Chefchaouen’s steep cobbled streets.

morocco motorcycle trip

Chefchaouen - Malaga

It is time to say goodbye to Morocco and board the ferry back to Spain. The road from Chefchaouen to Tangier, although not a long one, will offer us splendid mountain views, typical of this area of the country. In Algeciras, our port of disembarking, we will make a pause to enjoy a light lunch by the seaside, and then take the ‘Costa del Sol’ road back to Málaga. As we ride along the coast, memories of these past days together in an enchanted land will inevitably fill our hearts and make us dream about our next adventure with Hertz Ride. The group’s final dinner will be a happy and well-deserved celebration of a most incredible tour!

Blog-How to plan a Morocco Motorcycle Trip IMTBIKE

How to plan a motorcycle trip in Morocco: the best routes and our travel tips

For a motorcycle trip in Morocco , it is essential to have all of the necessary documents in order— both for the driver and the motorcycle. This may include a visa based on your country of origin, so be sure to check that out! Meanwhile, Moroccan customs is modernizing day-by-day. Increasingly, the police officers are younger and more knowledgeable in multiple languages. Once there, remember that you cannot take photographs or videos in the border areas, and that drones are prohibited in Morocco.

The best motorcycle routes in Morocco start on the north coast . In this area, we’ll eat delicious seafood dishes, freshly caught that very same morning. The menu here is different from what you’d expect when thinking of traditional Moroccan food, but we’ll have plenty of that later! The roads here are busy such as that which ascends to Chefchaouen— the magical blue town of the Rif Mountains . This is a very special place to visit for a multitude of reasons.

Further south, the road to the Atlas Mountains is the winding meeting point between the bustling north and the Sahara Desert , with all its oases and own unique Berber culture. The traditional lifestyle still present in the desert invites us to relax and pause. From the Atlas Mountains to the south, the state of the roads continues to improve every year.

Morocco covers such a vast range of territory that it offers tremendous landscape and weather contrasts. Accordingly, come prepared for high temperatures in the south and the rain and low temperatures in the mountains and in the north. On a Moroccan motorcycle trip with IMTBIKE , the route we have prepared covers more than 10 km at an altitude that ranges between 1,800 and 2,200 meters high. This route crosses a high plateau with a lunar aspect, offering us amazing landscapes and incomparable views.

And back to the key question: How to prepare for your motorcycle trip in Morocco in light of all these details and elements?

We must arrive properly prepared in order to experience as much as possible. Pick your clothing carefully. Bring clothing for warm weather, as well as cold, and be sure to pack a rain suit— which is always a good idea anyway, just in case! You should also bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and lip balm.

There is a lot to see in Morocco on a motorcycle, and on a trip with IMTBIKE, anything is possible. In the same day, you may touch the snow in the morning and sleep in the desert at night .

Another major reason to visit Morocco on your next motorcycle trip is that there are so many vibrant cities to explore—especially the four imperial cities. Fez, with its labyrinthine alleyways, is always an adventure. Outside of the cities, the amazing landscape is second to none. The Atlas Mountains, the Moroccan Coast with all its colonial charm, and the unforgettable experience of watching the sunset from the dunes of the Sahara Desert are all yours for the taking. Not to mention the Valley of the Roses and the impressive Gorges of the Dades and Todra!

When it comes to Western tourism, Morocco is the safest Muslim country there is . However, precautions should be taken when it comes to the water. Always drink bottled water and avoid eating raw salads or unpeeled fruit that may have been washed with un-bottled water. And when traveling through large cities, remember that despite the Highway Code and associated rules being similar to our own in theory, it doesn’t quite shake out that way in practice. In Morocco, the largest vehicle always takes precedence over the smaller ones. On the expressways, particularly in the south, traffic is calmer and the roads are constantly being improved.

In any case, on any IMTBIKE motorcycle tour, our guides understand fully all safety measures and protocol ! You can rest easy knowing that your North African adventure is going to be safe, fun, and comfortable.

We can’t wait for you to discover this enchanting country with us!

Tour Overview

Our 16-day Moroccan explorer tour gives you the chance to discover the wonderful and charming nature of a country rich in culture and bursting with diversity. Explore the wonderful architecture and taste the local cuisine with us.

On our Morocco motorcycle tour the first night is in a Parador close to Malaga where we’ll have our welcome dinner overlooking the Mediterranean sea. The following morning we ride to the port for your ferry crossing to Africa and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Back on land, it’s a short ride to the border where once the formalities are complete we’ll continue south toward the Imperial City of Rabat. The capital city is off the tourist trail and the souks of the Medina cater more for locals then visitors which provides a great insight into this country and its culture. After an evening here you have two days to explore Marrakech, known as the ‘Red City’. This ancient city is the beating heart of Morocco and its marketplace never sleeps. A day off the bike will allow you to lose yourself in the bustling Medina, bartering in the Souks and visiting the Berber Museum, or relaxing with some Moroccan Whisky – Mint Tea! Your route from Marrakech is to the Atlantic coast and Essaouira with its bluer than blue fishing fleet and walled sea defences lined with cannon. Once again we are staying within the walled Medina in another authentic Riad. It’s a short day to Essaouira and so for the adventurous there is a chance to go Quad Biking in the sand dunes during the afternoon

After time spent in three of the great cities of Morocco you are heading into the countryside and a night in a remote Riad. The Atlas Mountains are our playground for the next few days with the awe inspiring Tiz n’Test and Tiz n’Ticha Passes, snaking their way over 2,000 metres skywards. More remote locations follow as you visit UNESCO listed Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient Ksar or citadal. If it looks familiar then it may be because it has featured in many films like The Living Dayights, The Mummy, Gladiator and Jesus of Nazareth. Our Riad overlooks the Ksar, so you can check in and change before wandering its ancient streets and alleys. The following day you have the option to ride the famous Dades and Todra Gorges!  They are connected by a technical gravel section of road, but for those who wish to stick to the tarmac you can still ride the best of both.

Next you are heading into the Sahara for a night in a Riad next to the dunes. Dinner will be served at a Berber camp in the desert a short camel trek away! Heading north you have two nights in the Imperial City of Fes in another Riad in the heart of the Medina. This iconic city with its winding streets and alleys is a maze. Packed with tanneries the faint smell pervades the centre of town. From Fes you head for the west coast of Morocco but not before visiting the UNESCO listed ancient city of Volubilis before our final night on African soil in Tangier, the strategic gateway between Africa and Europe since Phoenician times. The following morning the return ferry crossing to Spain awaits and the last night of our trip back in the Parador for the farewell dinner and to share our magical memories of this most captivating of countries.

Please Note : Throughout this tour we’ll be staying in beautiful authentic Moroccan Riads, either in the heart of the Medinas of Chefchoan, Marrakech, Rabat, Essaouira and Fes, or in remote locations in unspoilt traditional villages. We feel this is important to enjoy the real flavour of Morocco as opposed to staying in large chain hotels on the outskirts of town, even though they would have more convenient parking. The Riads can be challenging to find even with a GPS and a map and it is often easiest to pay a local taxi/moped rider and follow them. The Riads in the Medinas cannot be directly accessed by vehicles and so your bikes will need to be left in a parking area close by and we will pay a watchmen to stand guard over them at night. There are many willing baggage carriers in the towns who will take your luggage to the Riad for a few dirham.

This is a tarmac tour with some optional easy dirt / gravel roads. It is suitable for all competent riders as well as couples riding two up.

MOROCCO OFF ROAD ADVENTURE

  • What is Included

The ultimate test of your off-road skills, this adventure goes where few fear to tread

During this 9-day motorbike adventure tour we will cross the Atlas twice through the two most famous passes and discover some of the least frequented pistes of Southern Morocco. Our tour will start and end in the Imperial City of Marrakesh. During the tour we will ride the Tizi n’Test and Tichka passes through the Atlas, spend a night in a special camp in the desert and ride the less frequented dirt roads of the South. You will have the opportunity to see the different sides of Morocco, from the greenery of the mountains and the multicoloured face of the desert, while exploring Marrakech and Ouarzazate, the home of many famous movie scenes. We will ride fast-paces roads filled with switchbacks and flowing corners and we will take the bikes through some rocky off-road sections where speed will be replaced by technicality. This trip is recommended to experienced riders and adventurers who wish to participate in a unique tour.

Day 1 : Arrival Arrival to Marrakesh. Transfer to your SPA hotel, where you will be able to settle in and relax by the pool before the start of the trip the next morning. You will meet your tour guide and go through the briefing session as well as the formalities required before the start and you will receive your welcome pack.

Day 2: Marrakech – Ait Benhaddou (approx. 200 km)

We’ll pick up the bikes at the workshop and head out of the city to conquer the High Atlas. The first riding day will give you a good taste of the stunning gravel tracks and amazing landscapes this land has to offer. After a first tarmac section we head off-road high into the mountains on narrow tracks and tight gravel switchbacks, before returning to tarmac and climbing the Tichka pass at 2260m. We then take the smaller road through the Ounila valley to ride through remote villages and breathtaking scenery. We will head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Benhaddou and you will have the opportunity to explore this unique Kasbah before heading to the hotel.

Day 3: Ouarzazate – M’Hamid (approx. 270 km)

This day starts with a mix of fast gravel tracks and tricky crossings through the stony riverbeds to get to Ouarzazate. After a quick coffee break, we’ll tackle great tarmac roads, cross the Anti Atlas and then ride through the Draa valley heading south. After a lunch in Zagora and a last fuel stop in Tagounite, we head off-road for the firs encounter with sand. Our last section gets us through gravel tracks and sandy sections before hitting the small dunes we need to cross to get to our desert camp for a good rest under the beautiful desert sky.

Day 4: M’Hamid – Foum Zguid (approx. 150 km)

The challenges begin. We will experience a day of riding the remote pistes of the Sahara. The tracks are a  mix of sand, gravel tracks, rocky sections and more sand. Off-road experience is a must to handle the heavy bikes on this terrain. Although the distance seems small, it is challenging riding and a tiring day for most. You will enjoy the remoteness of the desert and will be amazed by the varied terrain it offers. We’ll sleep in a beautiful hotel so you can enjoy great food, a nice pool and a good night rest.

Day 5: Foum Zguid – Tafraoute (approx. 300 km)

Day 6: Tafraoute – Agadir (approx. 200 km)

This riding day will take us to our wonderful accommodation near the surfing spots of Morocco. Depending on the option chosen by the group, we either ride the more remote, twisty roads of the Anti-Atlas before descending towards Agadir, or we head west towards the coast for more sand riding. Either way, we will cross the crazy traffic of Agadir, to ride our final stretch to the hotel on the stunning coastal road along the Atlantic. We’ll relax at a wonderful surf / yoga resort at the beach.

Day 7 : Agadir – Taroudant (approx. 200 km)

We usually start the day with a ride on the beach – something you can seldom experience elsewhere. Once the fun is over, we’ll ride the remote, narrow – and sometimes broken – roads of the Atlas towards Taroudant. After a short coffee break, we head off-road and will tackle the rocky, challenging tracks winding up and down the valleys. A mix of loose gravel, rocks, off-camber slippery slate will ensure you stay concentrated throughout. Once back on the tarmac, we’ll stop for lunch and then head to our hotel within the old walls of the city. Before dinner, we’ll have the option to wander around this busy, culturally rich town.

Day 8: Taroudant – Marrakech (approx. 250 km)

We kept some fun for the last day. We’ll leave Taroudant behind, and will climb the Tizi n’Test for a great ride and amazing views for a coffee at the top of the pass. This road is a mix of great tarmac and some challenging bits, being rated as one of the most dangerous roads in the world. We’ll then descend towards Marrakech but will make a detour after lunch, to conclude this great trip with some afternoon fun in the Agafay desert. Loose gravel, riverbeds, steep climbs and descents and some narrow single trails will be on the menu in the afternoon. We then head back to the city, refuel the bikes and take them back to the workshop before you are transported back to the hotel for a quick shower and some rest. The day is not over, as our farewell dinner is scheduled for that evening in a stunning location in town.

Day 9: Departure

Depending on your flight time, you might take the opportunity to relax at the hotel or decide to take surfing lessons. Those of you who opted to extend their holidays will remain to enjoy the weather and the many activities on offer, while those leaving will be transferred to the airport through their pre-arranged pick-up.

This is one of our most challenging and unique Morocco off road motorcycle tours. If you’re dying for a real moto adventure, look no further. Off-road experience is required!
