Nursing at VA

Deeper compassion. higher purpose..

Nurses are at the heart of our world-class, patient-centered standard of care. Day in and day out, they go the extra mile to make a lasting difference in the lives of our Veterans and their families.

Nurses play a crucial role in Veterans’ long-term, holistic health. They work collaboratively across disciplines and treatment settings with designated medical teams—and other community resources—to help coordinate the full spectrum of patient care. And they do it all with a gentle humility and patience that keeps Veterans’ spirits lifted.

Registered Nurse Transition-To-Practice (RNTTP) Residency Program

You’ve just graduated from your nursing program or are close to wrapping up your final courses — what’s next? VA’s RN Transition-To-Practice (RNTTP) Residency Program is specifically designed to help new graduate RNs go from the classroom to practice — easily and with confidence.

Our experienced nurses are ready to guide and support you through the transition from student to practicing RN each step of the way. This 12-month developmental training program includes both didactic and clinical components that provide you with opportunities to take on the role, duties, patient care activities, and procedures performed by RNs.

If you are a new graduate RN in your first licensed RN role, or you’re an RN with less than one year of professional RN experience, you qualify for the program. Research shows that RNTTP residency programs positively impact nurses, patients, and health systems alike.

Discover a rewarding position that will challenge you while you make a significant difference within the lives of Veterans.

[BANNER] VA: Excellence

Training and Development

As the nation’s largest employer of nurses, VA has a rich history of investing in nurses’ learning and career pursuits. From student employment to residency and orientation programs, we’re proud to help our nurses forge clear paths to greater success.

The VA Learning Opportunities Residency (VALOR) Program — VALOR gives outstanding registered nursing students who have completed their junior year in an accredited clinical program the opportunity to develop their skills at a VA-approved health care facility. Learning opportunities include didactic or classroom experiences, competency-based clinical practice with a qualified RN preceptor, and participation in nursing-focused clinical conferences.

More than 50% of VALOR participants are hired as new registered nurses in VA and usually start above the entry-level salary rate established for new graduates. This is because VALOR participants are already oriented to VA and its practice requirements. Contact the nursing education department at your local medical center for more information about the VALOR Program and how to apply.
