The Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (GCB) of the University of Bern, jointly administered by the Faculties of Medicine , Science and Vetsuisse , offers structured, experimental research training programs leading to a PhD, MD,PhD, DDS,PhD or DVM,PhD degree. The PhD program provides comprehensive, internationally competitive training in the theory and practice of experimental research as well as in-depth specialist knowledge of the individually selected research area. It directs the students towards independent scientific work and enables them to assume scientific responsibility. Research training is available in the areas of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Cell Biology, Immunology, Neuroscience, and Epidemiology. Applicants should possess a Master's degree, or equivalent, in Life Sciences or related areas, Biomedical Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, or Veterinary Medicine.

In cooperation with the Intermediate Staff Association of the University of Bern (Mittelbauvereinigung), the Vice-Rectorate Research calls for proposals to the Fund for the Promotion of Young Researchers twice a year. The fund aims to encourage networking activities of young researchers from doctoral study (PhD) level upwards. In an efficient und quick procedure, original and innovative ideas that strengthen independence and personal skills are financed with a max. of CHF 5,000.

Negotiations are ongoing. As soon as an agreement has been reached, information will also be provided on the conditions for free publishing in Open Access.

Interviewtraining «it’s a match how to increase your chances in the job interview».

The aim of the project, which is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, is to investigate how job interviews can be designed to make response behaviour more comparable between job applicants and, based on this, to validly predict future behaviour in the job. In this context, we offer people who are currently looking for a job or who are interested in improving their interviewing skills (target group: doctoral students) to participate in a simulated job interview.

The University of Bern, by way of its «UniBE Short Travel Grants for (Post)Docs» funding program, supports short research stays abroad for doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. There are two submission deadlines per year, 01 March and 01 September.

Fakultärer Fonds zur Unterstützung von PostDocs

Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen auf Post-Doc-Ebene können Anträge zur finanziellen Unterstützung in Angelegenheiten und für Massnahmen im Bereich von Gleichstellung und Diversität bei der KGD stellen. Gefördert werden Anliegen, die im Bereich der wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit Aspekte der Gleichstellung und/oder Diversität betreffen. In der Strategie 2030 legt die Universität Bern im Rahmen des Aktionsplans Chancengleichheit einen breiten Diversitätsbegriff zugrunde. Unterstützungsberechtigt sind Studierende, Dozierende und Angehörige des Mittelbaus der Universität Bern. Reisestipendien

BezügerInnen z.B. von kantonalen Stipendien sollten unbedingt vor Antritt ihres Auslandjahres abklären, ob ihnen die Stipendien weiter ausbezahlt werden (fordern Sie unter Umständen ein unterstützendes Schreiben der Studienfachberatung an). Da Auslandsaufenthalte u.U. eine Verlängerung ihrer Studienzeit bewirken können, ist dies nicht in jedem Fall gewährleistet.

Besonders hingewiesen sei auf das folgende Stipendium, falls Sie einen Studienaufenthalt im Ausland planen:

Kirchliches Stipendium für interreligiöse und ökumenische Studien

Der Synodalrat der Ref. Kirchen Bern-Jura-Solothurn stellt dem Departement für Evangelische Theologie einen jährlichen Kredit von max. Fr. 10'000 für die Absolvierung interreligiöser und ökumenischer Studien an nicht evangelischen Universitäten des In- und Auslandes zur Verfügung. Keine Religion und Kultur wird dabei bevorzugt, und es muss sich um religiöse, soziologische, theologische oder kulturelle Studien handeln. – Stipendienberechtigt sind Studierende sowie Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden.

InteressentInnen richten ihre Bewerbung jeweils gemäss Ausschreibung an das Dekanat der Theologischen Fakultät, Länggassstrasse 51, Unitobler, 3012 Bern.

Es gibt zwei Stiftungen bzw. Fonds, die Reisestipendien bzw. Stipendien für Auslandsaufenthalte an Theologiestudierenden ausrichten:

Reformierter Weltbund

Der Reformierte Weltbund (RWB) vergibt verschiedene Stipendien für Theologische Schulen und Fakultäten auf der ganzen Welt. Der RWB gibt jedes Jahr eine Liste mit denjenigen Institutionen heraus, die am Programm teilnehmen. Es sind dies vor allem Seminarien in den USA, aber auch in Schottland, Indien, etc. Wer sich um ein Stipendium bewerben will, muss eine Empfehlung der Heimatkirche oder eines Dozenten/einer Dozentin haben.

Jedes Jahr werden von verschiedensten Ländern Stipendien ausgeschrieben. Die meisten sind allerdings nicht unbedingt an Theologiestudierende gerichtet, aber es lohnt sich trotzdem, Erkundigungen einzuziehen.

Sharing a journey: Chima Iheaturu

( Instagram post by unibe.mobility ) Chima Iheaturu, a Ph.D. student at the Institute of Geography, recently returned from a 3-month research stay at the University of Washington, funded by “UniBE Short Travel Grants for (Post)Docs.” 🎓✈️ During his stay, Chima immersed himself in research at the Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis Laboratory and made significant progress in his field. 🌐💼 From the majestic views of Mount Rainier to the serene landscapes of Orcas Island, Chima also took time to explore the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. 🏔️🌲 As he returns to Switzerland, Chima reflects on the enriching experiences and connections he made during his time at the University of Washington: “I am filled with gratitude for the relationships I have built and the horizons I have broadened. My heart is full from 3 months of stimulating research and adventures in nature. Courses transferable skills.

As well as earning an academic qualification, i.e. the thesis, the goal of a PhD education at the University of Bern is to acquire transferable skills so as to prepare PhD candidates for a demanding position within or outside academia.

The course program Transferable Skills is a project of the Vice-Rectorate Development within the scope of the sub-strategy of the targeted promotion of the academics of the future of the university's Strategy 2021. 

The course program is free of charge for postdocs and doctoral candidates of the University of Bern.

In addition, several other bodies of the University of Bern offer various courses dedicated to transferable skills and other academic offers for doctoral candidates and/or postdocs: Other workshops or academic offers at the University of Bern
