13 Best Things to Do in Kingman, AZ

Written by Freddy Sherman Updated Mar 24, 2023

Kingman, Arizona retains an authentic small-town vibe but is packed with history and things to see and do. The city has always been a key part of the railroads, a stopping point for all west and eastbound steam-powered trains to fill with water. You can learn about and see this history at the Kingman Railroad Museum and Locomotive Park.

Giant Route 66 sign

Before the interstate highway system and I-40, Route 66, known as "The Mother Road," was the main and only way to drive across the country. Any town or city on its route was automatically a tourist destination since every car and truck driving cross-country had to go through it.

Kingman felt both the boom and bust of being on Route 66, and this history is chronicled at the Arizona Route 66 Museum.

Outside the museum, there's a giant, drive-through version of the iconic black and white Route 66 sign. Cars line up to be able to drive through and stop under the sign to take pics. The Arizona Route 66 Museum is inside Kingman's Powerhouse Visitor's Center, on the second floor.

The city has a "one fee for all three" program for its most popular museums. A single ticket grants you access to the Route 66 Museum; the Mohave Museum; and the Bonelli House, a restored house from 1915.

Address: 120 West Andy Devine Avenue, Kingman

Kingman Visitor Center

Housed in the city's massive vintage 1908 power plant powerhouse building, the center is a great example of adaptive re-use of a historic structure. The huge open space of the former electricity generating plant, the largest steam generating plant in the western US at the time, makes a great space for a visitor center and museum, with exhibits and displays including full-size automobiles.

Essentially made obsolete by the creation of Hoover Dam, the building sat vacant for years until a local group raised money to renovate it, and reopened it as the Kingman Visitor Center in the 1990s.

The visitor center can provide all kinds of helpful information, so you can better know what to do and what to see while you're in town. They also have detailed information on local attractions, tours, and events and can also help with lodging and camping information.

Mohave Museum of History and Arts

A must-see stop for Kingman visitors, the Mohave (named for Mohave County not the Mojave People) Museum of History and Arts looks at the city's unique pioneer past.

There is a hall of Presidents with paintings of all the Presidents and First Ladies. You can see a series of exhibitions that show the growth of the region and how mining for (and transporting) gold, silver, and copper helped the area grow and develop.

The more trains that ran through Kingman and the more traffic on Route 66, the more the city grew. When I-40 bypassed Route 66, and trains converted to diesel and no longer needed to stop for water, that growth stopped. The museum also has memorabilia from Hollywood cowboy actor Andy Devine, a favorite son of the city who grew up in Kingman and whose parents owned the iconic Hotel Beale.

The Mohave Museum of History and Arts is a part of the "one fee for all three" program. One ticket grants you access to the Mohave Museum, the Route 66 Museum, and the Bonelli House.

Address: 400 West Beale Street, Kingman

Metcalfe Park

This historic downtown Kingman park is a favorite shady picnic spot with lots of covered areas, barbecue grills, and picnic tables for eating.

It's where the city hosts a lot of festivals and annual events, including the Mother's Day Art Festival, Mohave Pride Fest, and the musical Sounds of Kingman Concerts in the Park . The somewhat monthly free concert series features local artists who perform on the park's covered stage. Concertgoers are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and coolers of their favorite food and drinks.

Aside from the activities, there's an interpretive monument to Metcalfe Park's namesake (and donor of the land), local businessman and politician Charles Metcalfe, as well as two newly installed rock climbing walls in the children's play area.

Address: 315 West Beale at Grandview, Kingman, Arizona

Hualapai Mountain Park

The first thing you notice as you drive into the mountains to visit Hualapai Mountain Park is the change in temperature. When it's 100-degrees-Fahrenheit-plus in Kingman, you'll instantly enjoy the 20- to 30-degree drop in temperature, especially as you get higher in elevation.

The entrance to the park is about 5,000 feet above sea level, and elevations rise to almost 8,500 feet . Breathe in deeply, as the second thing you notice are the giant pine trees and the wonderful piney nature smell in the air. All this is less than 30 minutes away from downtown Kingman.

The 2,300-acre park has 10 miles of well-designed and well-maintained trails, used by hikers, bikers, and horses. There are activities like disc golf and a children's play zone. The park gets snow, and is a popular place for Kingman residents (especially kids) to come and play in the snow .

Overnight camping is available in a rustic stone cabin; reservations can be made online. You can also dry camp in a vehicle (year-round) or camp in an RV (June through October only).

Hualapai Mountain Park is open from sunrise to sunset, and there is a $10-per-vehicle entry fee with additional fees for camping.

Locally owned Desert Wonder Tours presents a range of local half- and full-day tours that allow you to explore the region around Kingman.

Desert Wonder Tours' Horseback Riding through Joshua Tree Forest/Buffalo Tour includes lunch with the Singing Cowboy. It's a fun, unique Western experience that starts at the Grand Canyon Ranch, which is in a Joshua Tree forest. You'll take a gentle, hour-long trail ride passing by a herd of buffalo. The ride ends at a rustic ranch restaurant, where you have lunch (included with the tour) while being serenaded by a singing cowboy.

Other tours include adventures to the Grand Canyon and a walk on the glass Skywalk 4,000 feet above the canyon floor, an adventure to a wild animal safari park, and a trip to Lake Havasu to play on the beach and see London Bridge.

Kingman Railroad Museum

Another place to discover the city's rich railroad history, the Kingman Railroad Museum is housed within a vintage 1906 train depot. There are displays and exhibits that tell and show Kingman's long history as a key depot between the east and west coast of the country during the 19th and early 20th century. It's staffed by train enthusiast volunteers and former railroad employees who just love trains.

Aside from the historical exhibits and signage, the museum is home to a vast model railroad, with O, HO, and N-gauge trains and accessories.

Old and new come together, as the museum shares the building with the current Amtrak train waiting room and is on the main train line. The museum has lots of windows, and you can watch modern passenger and freight trains roll by as you tour the exhibits.

Address: 402 East Andy Devine Avenue, Kingman, Arizona

Giganticus Headicus

This modern roadside attraction, a 14-foot-tall green Tiki-style head, sits next to what was Route 66. Now a rural highway, the iconic American road used to be a very busy thoroughfare, dotted with weird roadside attractions designed to get you to stop and buy stuff.

A local artist built the head in 2003, with metal and wood framing covered in concrete. It was a tribute to roadside attractions and to the statues on Easter Island. For a time, there was a gas station, visitor center, and gift shop at the site (the gift shop is open daily).

There is an old gas station here, with antique gas pumps and a few old cars, so it's a fun place to visit and take pics. There are also large metal sculptures on a ridge and on a pile of old cars, which create beautiful silhouettes against the setting sun.

Address: 9855 AZ-66, Kingman, Arizona

Bonelli House

The Bonelli House, owned by the City of Kingman, shows how a typical (successful) family lived in the early part of the 20th century. The house was built in 1915 and has been restored to reflect the design and style of the time. Generations of the Bonelli family lived in the house until the 1970s, when it was donated to the city.

Everything in the house is vintage 1900 to 1950. Some of the items have been donated by the Bonelli family. It's fascinating to see the technology of the time, including the coal-fired heater. The house was rare for the time, with indoor plumbing and hot and cold running water. In 1915, most houses in Kingman still had outhouses and brought in well-pumped water.

Docents lead 30-minute guided tours of the house Tuesday through Friday from 11am to 3pm with the last tour at 2:30.

The Bonelli House is part of the "one fee for all three" program; one ticket grants you access to the Mohave Museum, the Route 66 Museum, and the house.

Address: 430 East Spring Street, Kingman, Arizona

Lewis Kingman Park

Lewis Kingman Park, on Route 66 at the edge of the downtown area, is named for the city's founder. Lewis Kingman was an engineer who worked for the legendary Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe railroad. He was a civil engineer who designed thousands of miles of the complicated railroad track networks throughout Northern Arizona, Southern California, and Southern Nevada.

The nine-acre park has a lot of green space, with picnic areas, restrooms, and a cool interpretive display about Kingman – both the man and the city.

Dog lovers should know there is an off-leash dog park here, with separate sections for small and large dogs. The dog park is grass with a lot of trees and shady areas, so you can visit even during the summer.

Address: 2201 East Andy Devine Avenue, Kingman, Arizona

Alpacas

This alpaca ranch breeds and sells alpacas, South American animals like llamas. They have a herd of almost 40 animals, and the gentle creatures are fun to visit with.

The ranch is open for visits Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday from 10:15am to 3:30pm. A few times a year, they hold free Farm Days, but admission is normally $15 per car, for up to five guests.

Once inside, you can get a tour of the ranch and barn and can pet and even feed the alpacas. You'll learn their fleece is three times better at retaining heat than sheep wool, and two times better than cotton for releasing heat and cooling.

The ranch makes and sells alpaca fiber socks, which are a very useful souvenir you can bring home from your visit.

The Alpacas of the Southwest ranch is about 15 miles from downtown Kingman; it's about 4,000 feet above sea level, so it sees four seasons a year, including some cold winters. The alpacas love the climate, as its similar to their native Andean environment.

The Farmhouse in Kingman

Located in the heart of downtown Kingman on Beale Street, this unique home goods and clothing store focuses on new local styles, vendors, and designers. There is clothing for men and women, along with kids and babies.

You can find a great selection of home products, like dishes, glasses, mirrors, and other cool stuff for your house. The Farmhouse also has an eclectically stylish selection of jewelry and accessories, along with hats, sunglasses, shoes (cowboy boots, sneakers, and sandals), and more.

There is a section of beauty and bath products (for men and women) and a lot of pretty paper products: notepaper, diaries, cards, stickers, calendars, and sketch pads. It's a very interesting place to shop for unique gifts or for things for yourself.

Locomotive Park

There's only one locomotive in Locomotive Park, but it's a massive and historic one. You can climb up into the cab and live out your steam engineer fantasies. Don't worry, the train is permanently mounted in concrete, it's not going anywhere.

The huge coal-burning locomotive was built in 1928 for the Santa Fe Railway, and it made the passenger run between Los Angeles and Kansas City (stopping in Kingman for water) for many years. In fact, it made the railroad's final steam run from Los Angeles before the steam trains were replaced with diesels. The amazing piece of transportation technology was presented to the city of Kingman in 1957 and is a cool place to visit for kids, too.

The locomotive sits in the park space across the street from the Kingman Visitors Center and the Route 66 Museum. You can visit this classic locomotive while modern trains go by, as the main track is only a few hundred feet away.

Kingman Tours: A Walkabout with Jim Hinckley What is A Walkabout with Jim Hinckley? Kingman Main Street is launching a public arts project in the heart of downtown Kingman, titled “Kingman Tours: A Walkabout Kingman with Jim Hinckley.” A Walkabout Kingman with Jim Hinckley involves an interactive, self-guided tour of significant sites along Route 66 and in historic downtown Kingman – all beginning with a life-sized bronze sculpture of Mr. Hinckley himself. Jim Hinckley is an internationally acclaimed author, historian, and tour guide specializing in Route 66 based right here in Kingman. Through this project, Kingman Main Street wishes to recognize Hinckley’s contributions to our community. KMS has commissioned Arizona-based J. Anne Butler, an experienced figurative bronze sculptor to create a sculpture piece to be placed at the historic Kingman Train Depot at 4th Street and Andy Devine. This site would serve as the first stop of several distinct interactive downtown walking tours, with virtual guidance and narration by Hinckley. VIEW SAMPLE TOUR DONATE   Become A Sponsor

This little wine bar is an nice street-side escape to relax, enjoy a glass of wine or beer and listen to music or just escape from the world.  They stock over 140 labels of wine available by the bottle, about 35 beers and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages, with a small menu of appetizers (cheese plate, hummus, bruschetta caprese, olives). Bob went above and beyond to make this tour possible. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Bob tell me facts of interest along the way. Walking among the Burro’s in Oatman was a unique treat. I cant wait to book another tour with Desert Wonder Tours.

We definitely recommend this tour! Our tour guide was very informative about the history of Kingman and super funny too! He made a ton of great suggestions that we are enjoying before our trip ends too. We will be doing more tours in the future! Thank you!

My mom and I had a wonderful time with Bob on our tour to the powerhouse and museum on Route 66 and the trip to the cavern was worth the drive. Bob was very knowledgeable and provided a lot of information and history during our drive. It was also nice to hear about his own family history in the area.

The trip to Grand Canyon West/Skywalk was so relaxing and enjoyable. Bob was great to travel with and we would take one of his tours again. The Joshua tree forest was especially interesting and we even saw a roadrunner. Our lunch at the ranch was most enjoyable. I just wish I had gotten a picture of Cowboy Dan! Highly recommend this tour.

We had a wonderful time at Grand Canyon this weekend thanks to Bob. He was extremely accommodating and gave us a great tour of the Canyon. We also enjoyed our time at the cowboy ranch and singing cowboy Casey was amazing! Thanks a lot, Bob, for a great time!

This was one of the best times my wife and I had while on a quick trip to Vegas. It’s a nice way to get off the strip and do something out of the ordinary. The best part about this tour is the tour guide and their knowledge of all of the cool places you’ll see. The wineries were very welcoming and comforting as soon as we walked in. We practically had the places to ourselves. The wine very good and we actually bought a bottle to take home it was so good. The brewery was one of the best I’ve ever been too and I’m a huge craft beer guy. You’ll want to add this to your itinerary. Here’s the kicker, we had breakfast, got picked up right outside our hotel and we were back in Vegas around 2pm to still enjoy the rest of our day!

Very nice trip with great personalized service. Our guide Bob pointed out many interesting things along the way,and was very knowledgeable about the area. The lunch at the ranch was good. Other than the snack bar at the west rim there’s not much out in this area, It’s a nice place to stop. We also stopped at a Art Gallery that had a nice selection of reasonably priced items. Overall a nice day. I’d recommend this operation to my family and friends.

Bob was knowledgeable n very informative made the Grand Canyon an experience my husband n I will always remember cowboy Casey n lunch was great

What an awesome tour! Our tour guide, Bob, was great. You will see the beautiful desert and enjoyment of desert wineries. Lunch and brewery were excellent. I highly recommend this tour.

It was an awesome and fun experience. From the guide and the activity tour plus lunch and the cowboy entertainment was worth what i paid for. thank you for taking good care of us !!

I took my husband on a date with Bob at Desert Wonder tours. It was just what we needed! He picked us up and brought us through the beautiful desert and Joshua Trees. We went to Grand Canyon West, wow the breath taking views. We work a lot so it was wonderful to sit together and listen to Bobs stories and sit back! He also brought us to listen to singung Cowboy Kasey...what a fantastic time there! The Ranch was so amazing you have to find out for yourself! We also stopped by a wonderful Art Gallery. Book a tour with Bob and ket him treat you for the day, he is very attentintive! Thank you again for the tour. It was a date we will never forget!

Both Bob and Sarge were excellent. My wife and I could not have asked for a better tour. We thoroughly enjoyed each stop on both days. There was a small mix up on day one and Bob went above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction. His enjoyment in providing these tours shines though in both his wealth of information and even more impressive his personal interaction/conversation during drive time.

Sarge and Will did a great job with the tour, had our very own private comedy show LOL. Lots of great information on the tour as well as the KEEPERS OF THE WILD feeding tour, don't get gas in NV, etc. We will definitely recommend to others traveling through

We had a great experience riding and seeing the newborn Buffalo! Also, the lunch and entertainment of a singing cowboy was amazing! Great experience for the money.

Did this tour with Desert Wonder Tours, LLC that I booked through Viator/TripAdvisor. Although slight confusion in the booking over whether the Skywalk ticket was included (which it was not, but easily purchased as an add-on by Desert Wonder) yet my wife and I enjoyed an awesome tour with Bob as our guide. Bob was timely in picking us up directly from Blake Ranch RV Park, which was not even listed as a pick-up point. Bob took his time with us and accompanied us at each stop so that we could have all of our questions answered, and also he directed us to the right lines and access points for each stop. Lunch at the Grand Canyon Western Ranch was excellent, and we were made to feel right at home. I would highly recommend Desert Wonder Tours out of Kingman, AZ and if you happen to get Bob as your guide, consider it a bonus! Consider leaving your vehicle where you are staying, so that everyone in teh group could enjoy the tour. We were greeted with donuts, plus lunch and all entrance fees are included, and you can buy the Skywalk ticket just for those who dare to take the walk!

Through the excellent services of Desert Wonder Tours, LLC with Bob as our guide, my wife and I were picked up at 8am for a day we won’t soon forget. Our trip to the West Rim took us through the beautiful Joshua Tree Forest. We purchased just one ticket for the Skywalk, but it was absolutely awe inspiring. I purchased the offered photos and will remember the experience for a long time! Also visited Guano Point and it was just as inviting with awesome views. After a great lunch at Western Ranch we were dropped off at our RV at Blake Ranch RV Park. To visit the Grand Canyon with including the West Rim would be a huge mistake!

Bob & Sarge were great! We had 2 vans of people that went to see the Joshua Trees, the Western Grand Canyon Ranch and to Star Gaze! It was 24 seniors and Bob catered the trip to their needs! The service was first rate and the experience was top notch! The sky cleared and the stars came out for us on the mesa behind the ranch! A memorable evening for all!

My husband and I booked two tours with Desert Wonder Tours the weekend of August 19-21, 2022. The Oatman/Route 66 tour was wonderful! We love to visit different locations and this tour is highly recommended! Desert Wonders (Robert) did a great job of making the tour feel personalized. We were taken to locations familiar to Robert since he grew up in the area; we were given a bit of Robert's family history. With each location, we are allowed to see things on our own; we are not forced to stay with a group. Robert made the trip fun! We stopped in Kingman, AZ (Electric Car Museum), a rock shop that sells local fare, Cool Springs and we were taken up the Route 66 Sidewinder to our final location of Oatman, Arizona. Walking with the burros and watching an old-fashioned gunfight was a great end to the tour. Robert is an outstanding host - knowledgeable of the area/history, funny and friendly! Highly recommend the tour and the company to anyone who can visit!

My husband and I took two tours the weekend of August 19-21st. This is my review on the 2nd tour: London Bridge/English Village tour. It was only my husband and me on this tour and our driver was Ally. This trip was wonderful! The views on our way to Lake Havasu was beautiful! Ally was a wonderful tour guide, giving us local information as she took us to the different locations. London Bridge/English Village was breathtaking. It is a beautiful location. We spent some time walking around and then rode a ferry to a casino in California. This tour like the first is not rushed, you can take your time walking around and enjoying yourself. I would highly recommend this trip as well! I am ready to book the next one! Great job Desert Wonder Tours!

I did two tours with this company. The Oatman tour and the Grand Canyon Caverns tour. Both were excellent, the tour guide Robert was wonderful and thoughtful. He did not rush me through anything and was extremely flexible with my requests.

We had a great time with our guide Ali. We got to see some beautiful scenery, the Route 66 museum, a really neat roadside rock shop, along with the cool town of Oatman. Ali was very accommodating and we would definitely recommend her and this tour.

Bob's knowledge of the area and his relationships with the locals made the trip outstanding. We stopped at well know places but also at some local shops that were amazing. Definitely recommend Desert Wonder and will use if back in the area.

(Translated by Google) We did the Grand Canyon tour (West Rim-Eagle Point with Skywalk and Guano Point). Our really professional guide Bob! A kind, polite, affable and accommodating person. Plus the inclusive lunch at the ranch was really good! All surrounded by the historic "Arizona Casey" who sang and played his songs! What else to say ... THANK YOU! A nice experience!

Just one of those lovely days that happen now and again. The organization was superb with the personal input from Bob being accommodating and informative throughout. Was a long day but well worth it. Route 66 museum was very interesting and our helpful guide/driver gave us lots of information. Visited a truly iconic vineyard and then and excellent wine bar/bistro for nice food and a further wine education. Would definitely book this or another trip with them if this way in the future. Well done

We couldn’t have a better Gide, he was excellent and explained the whole time clear and detailed about the story of the caverns. The caverns were awesome, we all had a very good time. My teens loved it.

Entire tour was great. Our guide Brandon was friendly and awesome and shared tons of knowledgeable history with us.

Just back from a tour to Oatman in Arizona with Bob from Desert Wonder tours. It was amazing. Bob was very accommodating to our wishes and really looked after us in his beautiful tour bus. Can not recommend this company and this tour enough. Fantastic.

Lovely ride from the tour guide to the ranch. Gorgeous horseback ride through the Joshua trees with two genuine cowboys as guides. Delicious lunch with delightful musical and story-telling entertainment!

The whole trip was fantastic. Mike picked my wife and I up in Las Vegas and we went on a desert tour destination Kingman. We visited a museum along Route 66 wine tasting the Little Old Wine Maker with great stories and terrific wine. We finished up with more wine tasting and lunch at Reds some excellent beer at the local microbrewery. We felt Mike was our friend when we were dropped off.

Rocky start getting pickup time. Travel to the location was smooth, lunch options had a lot of variety. The bridge and area were amazing. The nice Ferry ride to the casino for lunch. Highly recommend the tour. Our driver and guide, Bob was very accommodating and knowledgeable.

Excellent from start to finish. Bob our driver was amazing. He structured the day to suit us. Would definitely use Desert Wonder Tours again.

Micheal our driver was vey good, friendly, helpful and informative. The experience was also very good, a great way to spend the day away from the strip!

Highly recommend Desert Wonder Tours to explore the local area. In particular the Winery & Distillery tour is great value for money and very enjoyable. Bob was wonderful to deal with in the lead up to the day and also a sensational tour guide for our trip from Las Vegas to the Kingman area and back. I was always excited for this tour in the lead up, but it very much exceeded our expectations and was an experience we couldn't wait to tell family and friends about. All venues visited on our tour were very welcoming with friendly staff who loved having a chat and sharing their stories.

Brandon seemed pretty cool. Knew a lot about where we were going. We really enjoyed the part of route 66 that went through the extremely curvy sections of the mountainous areas.

Had a great day at Eagle Point and Guano Point, lunch at the ranch, and a drive through the Joshua Forest. Our guide, Mike, gave us lots of information about the area, and answered all our questions.

Absolutely wonderful tour experience to Grand Canyon West. Our guide Michael was super, sharing historical stories and facts about the tour sites. Lunch with a singing cowboy was very entertaining and made for a great conclusion! Very memorable experience 👍

We had a wine and beer tasting tour. Mike was our driver and tour guide. He was amazing and knowledgeable. He made our experience all about us and how we preferred to make our memories. I highly recommend Desert Wonder Tours.

Our experience was wonderful we really enjoyed Oatman and also really enjoyed the trip through the mountains we learned a lot that we didn't know and our tour guide was wonderful.

I was terrified but the rangers help ease your nervousness. We had such a good time that day. My daughter is a daredevil which sparked this excursion. Try it. It’s great.

Spending Time At Kingman Mine

Mesmerized by Turquoise and a Rich Family History of Mining

tours in kingman az

By Bruce McKay

Kingman turquoise has been a favorite of mine for many decades, and I have often used it in my goldwork. I believe the rich blue of Kingman should be accented with the rich yellow of gold. The first gemstone mine sales office I ever visited was to buy Kingman turquoise back in the late 1970s, and I still have some of the rough material from that purchase. With that, I was very pleased when Marty Colbaugh invited me to tour the Kingman mine itself.

I met Marty and his son Josh, first thing in the morning just outside of Kingman, Arizona at Colbaugh Processing , headquarters of the mine, and we hopped into their truck to head to the mine. It is a short drive from the main office to the mine, and during the drive, the two men talked about Kingman Mine history and their family’s involvement.

Kingman Character

Kingman Mine is in the Mineral Park area of the Cerbat Mountains in northwestern Arizona. This mountain range is primarily Precambrian gneiss, and many gold, silver and copper mines have operated there in recent history. The Kingman Mine is inside a copper mine. It is within two areas inside the copper mine, in Ithaca Peak and Turquoise Mountain. Currently, mining takes place on the face of Turquoise Mountain, as Ithaca Peak has been removed. There are many decades of reserves still to be mined, and the turquoise occurs in areas of sulfides and sulfide oxides. The upper sulfide oxide areas produce turquoise with more greens, and as you go deeper into the sulfide areas, the quality of the turquoise gets better and a richer blue.

tours in kingman az

Turquoise is present in veins, and as the veins go deeper into the ground, the quality of the material improves. Veins as thick as 40 feet have been found in this mine.

When Marty’s father, S.A.” Chuck” Colbaugh, first began mining Kingman, the diggings of Native Americans were still visible. At one time, he exposed a tunnel that had goatskin water bags and stone hammers still inside. The American Indians had been using turquoise from this mine for 1800 years or more, most often for personal adornment and trade purposes. Kingman turquoise traded through the ancient trade routes has been found as far as Mexico City. Archaeologists have been able to date the Mexico City area turquoise to 200 AD and have traced it back to this mine.

Chuck Colbaugh cut his first lapidary stone in 1929. He worked in the mining industry as a heavy equipment operator, welder and foreman in Battle Mountain, Nevada. Then he moved to Globe, Arizona, to work in the area mines. It’s believed the elder Colbaugh became the first person to stabilize Kingman turquoise after he put some chalky turquoise into epoxy. This discovery wouldn’t be his last. Colbaugh was an inventor and tinkerer and at one time held the patents on all the automatic cabochon cutting equipment in the US.

In 1962, Chuck Colbaugh heard that the Mineral Park Copper Mine was going to open, so he got permission to remove turquoise from the mine. Two years later, the Duval Mining Company began copper mining and Colbaugh retained his contract rights to mine turquoise within the mine. To this day, the Colbaugh family still has those contract rights, now with the Origin Mining Company of Canada. The copper mine is not currently in production but could restart any time Origin feels the market conditions were right.

Exploring Brilliant Blue Veins

Continuing with the tour, we drove up to the mine gate, and Marty punched in the security code to enter. After going through the gate, we switched to driving on the left side of the road. The drivers of the huge mining dump trucks have poor visibility to the sides, so for safety, all vehicles drive on the left side so the truck drivers can see other vehicles. While no large dump trucks are currently working in the mine since it is dormant, but the safety rules remain and are followed. After a short distance, we arrived at the large pit below the very tall mine face, but I was disappointed to see no actual excavation taking place. We were told someone had just headed to town for parts to repair vehicles, so they halted until they could get things running again.

Rather quickly, I could see blue veins of turquoise hundreds of feet up the face of the mine, but well below the top of the face. In order to mine the vein the crews cut benches, starting at the top of the face and work down. Each bench is 50 feet high and 25 feet wide, and the excavated rock is pushed off the bench and into the bottom of the mine pit until it is 150 feet deep. At this time, the rock is removed, ground, and graded into three sizes of rock. It then goes through the sorting shed.

There are two sorting sheds, and within each, two people were hard at work, pulling turquoise off conveyor belts. If they have hit a particularly rich area of material, the rock is recirculated through the belts to make sure nothing is missed. The sheds are small and air-conditioned.

The group is very strict on safety and have never lost an hour over an accident. They routinely get top ratings for safety from the Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and recently received a “0” citation report after an inspection. A no citation report is so unusual that MSHA sent another inspector out to confirm, and he also turned in a “0” citation report.

All-In-One Operation

As we returned to the mine headquarter, I toured the manufacturing facility. The

tours in kingman az

company does all of the manufacturing of the products they sell. They used to have all of their stone cutting done in China, but eight years ago, they decided they could do it cheaper themselves and have had great success in doing so. Today the company employs nearly 50 people, with crews working in the mine, the manufacturing facility, and in the office and salesroom.

Carrying on the stabilization tradition set forth by Chuck Colbaugh, a great majority (95 percent) of the rough material removed from the mine is stabilized or pressed into bricks. This material is too soft or too small to be formed into cabochons or beads, but nothing goes to waste, and Colbaugh Processing is among the leaders in the stabilization of turquoise, using a stabilization process with optically clear resin under no pressure. The stones weigh the same after stabilization as before. In a recent development, Rolex is manufacturing a Kingman turquoise dial watch, and the company only wanted stabilized material for the consistency and lack of color change.

A small percentage of their mined material is unusable even for stabilizing. New technology has created colorful pressed bricks ready to be cut into gems with a bronze spider webbing. Marty Colbaugh bought this process and perfected it into a product that cuts into beautiful, consistent stones. The pressed bricks come in many colors, some dyed, and others with turquoise mixed with other stones such as malachite, azurite, Spiny Oyster shell and pink opal. The company’s Mojave Green bricks got their name when a Mojave Green rattlesnake wandered into the shop. However, I don’t think the actual snake is in any of the bricks.

A unique combination of brick is the blue and orange version created by mixing turquoise with orange-colored Spiny oyster shells. These shells are a byproduct of Mexico’s shell food industry, which means no oysters had to die for the production of the jewelry. Josh Colbaugh suggested the brick combination to his father since Native American silversmiths used the Spiny Oyster shells in combination with turquoise. Marty felt otherwise but was wise enough to let Josh experiment with this notion, and now it is their best seller. I think this combination looks great, and I bought some bead strands.

Whether the stones are natural, treated or made into bricks, they go into the cutting shop to become cabochons, beads, cell phone case accessories, and candle holders, among other items. With this process, the company uses mass-production techniques to preform, then hand cut and polish. They make cabs using a preform cabochon cutter from Germany, not the one that Chuck Colbaugh invented. It turns out the efficiency of the German machine is more important than nostalgia in this modern workshop.

Intrigued By Equipment and Creativity

tours in kingman az

I was fascinated by the bead cutting equipment as I had never seen how beads were made. But, my favorite machine was the dopper. It uses hot glue heated with natural gas to dop up to 26 cabs at once. They are perfectly centered and are ready to go into the automatic preform machine. After preforming is done, workers at banks of cabbing machines put an excellent polish on a wide variety of calibrated shapes and sizes, and then the stones are ready to go to the salesroom.

The salesroom is new and an improvement from the previous space. It is big, provides a lot of room to wander around and look at the bead strands, rough material, trays full of calibrated cabs, cases full of finished jewelry, and the bricks manufactured in the shop. My favorite part of the sales area is the rough material room just off the main floor. This room contains bins full of treated and natural rough material in various sizes and qualities. I picked out some slabs that are natural veins 4” x 4” and 1/3” thick, plenty big enough to cut a nice belt buckle cab.

The Kingman that I drool over most is the spiderweb, and there is plenty to choose from in both stabilized and natural. There is spiderwebbing in various colors such as blue and black or white, but I am fond of black spiderwebbing. I have cut stones from it and have found the webbing to be consistent as I cut through stone. I was pleased to find some blue webbing just like the first pieces of Kingman I bought 40 years ago. It has dark blue webbing with a light blue interior, very beautiful.

Colbaugh Processing is a family operation with the third and fourth generations of the Colbaugh family involved with the company. Hopefully, the fourth generation will keep this family business moving forward, and with the known reserves of the mine, they will continue to have turquoise to mine and cut and sell.

The mine office is just seven miles north of Kingman, Arizona. If you find yourself in the area and are a lover of turquoise, you need to stop in. There is enough for everyone to drool over, trust me. For more information, visit www.colbaugh.net .

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema tours Nogales port of entry as migrants endure dayslong wait nearby

tours in kingman az

NOGALES — Sen. Kyrsten Sinema toured the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry on Wednesday, several feet away from roughly 100 asylum seekers enduring a dayslong wait to be processed into the building .

Clothes hung on metal poles and benches as a camping tent was propped up on the sidewalk outside of the port of entry. Many asylum seekers, desperate in their efforts to claim a CBP One appointment, have been waiting for more than a week to request asylum without the glitchy mobile app .

Many have been trying to book an appointment for months.

The line has dwindled by about 100 people since it first began in the days after the Title 42 border restriction was lifted May 11. Anywhere from five to 13 people without appointments are processed each day, migrants say.

People in line reflected an increased sense of hope and optimism as they saw others getting admitted and processed. Despite the number of people, the line was calm and orderly.

Sinema, I-Ariz., and Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., continued their two-day visit of southern Arizona in Nogales, touring the port of entry and parts of the border wall. Sinema emphasized how Border Patrol agents are too busy processing asylum seekers to fully perform their field duties in intercepting drugs and apprehending people evading detection.

Sinema said that there was an “almost unfettered flow” of drugs coming into the country because agents were being pulled away to process asylum applications.

Sinema erroneously claimed that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Tucson Sector is the only sector along the southern border where more drugs, particularly fentanyl, are interdicted in between ports of entry, instead of at ports.

“One thing we know about the Tucson sector is that this is the only sector of the US-Mexico border where more drugs, fentanyl in particular, are interdicted outside of the ports of entry than at the ports of entry,” Sinema said.

The vast majority of all drugs in CBP’s Tucson Sector, however, are intercepted at ports of entry, according to CBP data.

More than 96% of fentanyl in the Tucson Sector was seized by CBP’s Office of Field Operations at ports of entry so far in fiscal year 2023, per CBP data. More than 78% of all drugs were seized at ports in the Tucson Sector thus far in fiscal year 2023, according to CBP data.

Sinema visits Tucson: Sinema talks to Tucson nonprofits, local leaders about post-Title 42 border situation

The numbers follow nationwide trends where more than 91% of fentanyl intercepted nationwide was seized at ports of entry so far in fiscal year 2023, per CBP data.

Pablo Sierra-Carmona, a spokesperson for Sinema, later clarified that Sinema was referring to a majority of fentanyl being seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration in the interior of the country and not at ports of entry along the border in 2022.

Sinema previously claimed, during a Tucson event on Tuesday, that the amount of fentanyl being smuggled by cartels in between ports of entry in the Tucson Sector exceeds the amount of fentanyl intercepted at ports of entry.

"The amount of fentanyl that's coming in between ports of entry that's being smuggled in by the cartels exceeds what is being caught at the port of entry in the Tucson sector," Sinema said Tuesday.

On May 2, the Biden administration announced that it was sending 1,500 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in order to help Border Patrol agents return to fully conducting their field work. The troops, who were primarily deployed to Texas, were tasked with performing administrative work to free up agents ahead of the lifting of Title 42.

No troops came to Arizona.

The visit is the third time that Sinema has brought a congressional delegation to the Arizona-Mexico border this year. During her remarks, Sinema called for the hiring of more Border Patrol agents and for the completion of the remaining border wall gap projects.

Family endures eight-day wait at port of entry

Edgar Ayala Rodriguez and his family have been waiting outside of the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry for eight days.

The family left their home in Guerrero, Mexico, on May 15 and arrived directly at the port on May 16. The family left because of threats from organized crime.

The southern Mexican state has been plagued with violence for years due to fighting from rival drug cartels. Organized crime has infiltrated the everyday lives of many residents in the state.

If the line didn’t move and Rodriguez couldn’t see any hope in requesting asylum without an appointment, the family would return to Guerrero, he said. With no other place to go, the return to Guerrero would mean starting from scratch as the family had spent their savings on getting to the border.

Initial reporting: 200 asylum seekers in line outside Nogales port of entry days after Title 42's end

The Kino Border Initiative, a binational humanitarian nonprofit, has been providing asylum seekers with breakfast, lunch and mattress pads to sleep on. The migrant shelter has seen lower numbers of people in the days following Title 42’s end, according to Gia Del Pino, communications director for the Kino Border Initiative.

Many migrants are choosing instead to arrive directly to the port of entry and get in line, she added.
