PRIVATE ISLAND
The Great Island-Outdoors
Apart from the farming activity, Lambay is host to a wide variety of wildlife, including fallow deer, wallabies, rabbits, and notably, a large breeding colony of North Atlantic Grey (and Harbour) seals.
The island is also one of the most important sea bird nesting colonies off the coast of Europe and has been designated a Special Protection Area. Cormorants, shags, guillemots, razorbills, puffins, kittiwakes, curlews and fulmars can be observed at close quarters with ea se. We also have two herons!
The architectural glories of the island are the 16th-century castle, modified and extended by Edwin Lutyens in 1908-1910, and the terraced gardens, originally designed by Gertrude Jekyll. Massive rampart walls encircle the castle, together with its gardens and sycamore woods.
In addition to the Castle, Lutyens modified the farm buildings, Bothy, Chapel and Coastguard Cottages, which were built from local stone. In the 1920’s Lutyens was commissioned to build the Real Tennis Court on the sea front and finally, the Whitehouse in the 1930’s. Together these buildings form a harmonious architectural complex that beautifully complements the natural landscape.
The island offers excellent walking with impressive views and, in the harbour, low tide reveals a large sandy beach, rock pools and a swimming area.
What To See on Lambay
Lambay Castle (C16th fort, 1910 Lutyens)
Real tennis court, harbour with sandy beach, site of bronze age finds and hiberno-roman finds, c13th chapel extended by lutyens, fosse of norman fort, coastguard cottages, bothy (club house) and whitehouse, shags, cormorant, promontory fort, promontory fort (another), guillemots, fulmars, puffins, kittiwakes, razorbills, wallabies, neolithic tumulus, axe-head site, kittiwakes, fulmars, shags, tayleur bay, scene of the wreck of rms tayleur, kittiwakes, razorbills, guillemots, painted by patrick pollen, the original art decorates the whitehouse mantlepiece., island charms.
THE REAL TENNIS COURT
In 1921, at the request of Cecil Baring, Lutyens designed and built the Real Tennis Court on the sea front, forming the striking white facade with arches which greets passing sailors today. The court is currently in a state of disrepair but it is alleged to be one of just two outdoor courts left in the world, so plans are in place to renovate the court to its former glory and one day hold the Lambay Cup Championships here on the island.
Lutyens did not omit to improve the Chapel throughout his Lambay reign. Originally a 19th Century structure with white wash walls, Lutyens extended it and stripped it back to its Lambay porphyry base, allowing more light to enter and adding a beautiful stained glass window above the altar which was designed and made by Patrick Pollen (son of Daphne & Arthur and grandson of Cecil and Maude). He also added a portico of Doric columns over the entrance, adding a sense of occasion to the building as a whole.
THE BEACHES
Beyond the architecture there is yet more to discover. The Whitehouse beach boasts white sands and clear waters with delightful rock pools full of creatures and seaweeds, and the Harbour itself provides an idyllic and safe swimming area with plenty of space for BBQs and building sand castles. An early evening walk along the shoreline will often invoke the curiosity of the island's seals, who delight in inspecting us and our guests. There are also various coves and beaches around the North-West and South-West coasts where the seals can be found basking in the sun, often with their fluffy white newborn pups.
The summit, known as Knockbane, is 127 metres above sea level and marked by an Ordnance Survey pillar atop what is believed to be a Neolithic burial mound.
It offers a breathtaking view of the island and surrounding sea, with the mainland in the distance giving you an unparalleled sense of seclusion, peace and privacy.
THE NOSE & TAYLEUR BAY
From Knockbane, a walk to the very nose of Lambay takes approximately one hour and will take you past Tayleur Bay, where the R.M.S Tayleur infamously sank in 1854 after hitting Lambay in thick fog, just two hours into her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne, Australia. Over 300 passengers perished, with just three survivors. One of them was a chef of African-American origin; the story goes that when he finally reached the Coastguard Cottages in search of help, the island occupants had never before seen a person with dark skin and were too afraid to open their doors to him!
THE WILDLIFE
Over the back of the island there is much to explore; Lambay is a Natura 2000 site and protected bird sanctuary - home to puffins, razorbills, kittiwakes, cormorants, black-backed gulls, fulmars, curlews and more - take care not to tread on the eggs during Spring! Then of course, there are the fallow deer and our famous mob of island wallabies. Stealth is required to get close to them as they are shy creatures, but there are well over 100 and they can often be spotted sunbathing or hopping along the horizon through the fields, particularly at dusk. Sometimes they even sneak down to visit the Castle grounds...
And There's More...
There is Croquet, Ping-Pong, Bocce and also the Billiards room if staying in the Castle. We also have a substantial collection of boardgames, puzzles and family games for indoor entertainment. In the coming years we hope to revive the Real Tennis Court and eventually the Lawn/Hard Tennis court in its original location next to the Walled Garden.
ORGANISED ACTIVITIES
For those of you with a penchant for more: with advance warning, we can assist in arranging a variety of extra activities, including sea fishing expeditions; a tour around the island by boat; shooting and stalking; scuba diving (the Tayleur wreckage lies 20m below sea level at the back of the island). There is also the opportunity to arrange more intense activities through OrangeWorks.ie such as axe-throwing, kayaking, archery, rock-climbing and Bear Grylls survival challenges.
Monica Wilde, a dear friend of Lambay and an ethnobotanist-cum-forager with astounding depths of knowledge, offers relaxed and informal day trips for small groups for a limited time during the Spring and Autumn. She will take you around the island, teaching you how to forage safely and sustainably while also informing you of the incredibly health benefits of your finds. She will then show you how to cook delicious and nutritious meals with the spoils of your expedition! Please contact us for further information.

Lambay Nature Walking Tours
- Paid car parking
Lambay Island is in the Irish Sea, close to Dublin. As a private island, it is secluded and undisturbed by the city's influence. For nature lovers, Lambay Nature Walking Tours gives a rare opportunity to explore the wilder parts of Lambay and see some of the island's incredible wildlife in its natural habitat. Seals, deer, wallabies and puffins can be seen, depending on the season.
Enjoy a 30 minute sail over on the Naomi Leigh boat from Malahide marina with local guide Eamon McGrattan. Eamon will guide you on a relaxed 3 hour walk of the island to see the Lutyens architecture, the Real Tennis court, chapel and the walled kitchen garden. Then you will explore the uninhabited parts of the island and where the unfortunate RMS Tayleur met an early demise in 1854. Enjoy incredible views from the island summit before returning to the harbour for refreshments and time for a dip in the sea on Lambay's private sandy beach.
The trip is 5 hours in total and weather dependent. Your guide will confirm closer to the date once the weather forecast is available.

Lambay Island, County Dublin
Lambay Island is the kind of place you want to tell everybody and nobody about for fear of spoiling its integrity or seductive allure. A romantic idyll in every sense of the word it shimmers in the distance a couple of miles off the east coast of Ireland, just north of Dublin. Deliciously unspoiled, Lambay Island has remained a safe haven for birds and wildlife ever since it was purchased by Cecil Baring in 1904 for the princely sum of £5250. Newly married to an American divorcee, he sought to create a romantic and very private enclave for himself and his beautiful wife Maud in which to raise a family and live out a quiet life indulging his twin passions of poetry and natural history. He commissioned the famous Arts & Crafts architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens to design a house that would incorporate the existing 15th century castle and blend seamlessly into the landscape. Together with Gertrude Jekyll who designed the tiered rose gardens which surround the house, he created not only a dream house but a perfect family home that has more than stood the test of time.
This is a very beautiful house, not only is it aesthetically divine, the clean lines of the arts and crafts interior and furniture work as well today as they did 100 years ago, but it is also much loved and adored by generations of children, grand children and great grand children whose laughter and music still echoes around this wonderful house. Low, pan tiled roofs swoop down over stone mullioned windows with the original lead paned glass standing open on a warm sunny day, filled with the scent of roses wafting in on the birdsong. Floors boards are worn smooth and creak comfortingly as you move about the light filled spaces filled with pottery and paintings and personal memorabilia.
For a grand house it is very intimate and because the interior has not being altered in any way, it is absolutely perfect and finest Arts & Crafts house in Ireland. All of Lutyen's signature, oak furniture was especially made and designed for the house and apart from a glorious patina acquired by years of loving use it is as robust and beautiful as the day it arrived. Which all sounds very rosy and indeed it certainly is, on a warm summer's day but the current owner Alex and seventh Lord Revelstoke admits that modern day heating and plumbing would be a welcome addition, especially as he intends letting his magnificent house to private clients on a weekly basis when not in use by the extended family which includes some 200 cousins.
Formerly out of bounds, Alex’s grandfather guarded his privacy zealously, which is why Lambay Island is in the pristine state it is today. The house too has remained in a time warp of sorts and is a true architectural gem. There are two other Arts & Crafts houses in Ireland, Ard na Sidhe in Kerry and Renvyle in Connemara but this is my favourite because it is original and a family home. But times change and needs must be to make it sustainable in its own right while preserving its integrity which is going to be a delicate balancing act for sure.
Access to the island is only available via Skerries Sea Tours who have a special arrangement with the current 7th Lord Revelstoke, Alex Baring. Limited to just 7 people per trip they offer guided walking tours of the island which depart from Rogerstown daily weather permitting and last approximately 3-4 hours and cost €75 per person. Guided tours of the house are available occasionally but only to private groups of no more than twelve when the family is not in residence. Lambay, truly is one of Ireland's Hidden Gems and I cannot recommend a trip out there highly enough, Susan

Lambay Island - Ideal for Whiskey & Nature Lovers
Lambay is an extraordinary and magical place with a colorful history of saints, hermits, pirates, shipwrecks, monks, prisoner-of-war camps and finally, a beautiful love story born in the Arts & Crafts era. Today the island is managed by a trust, and has been under the protection of the Revelstoke branch of the Baring family for four generations. Thanks to the genius of architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and the vision of Cecil and Maude Baring, who purchased Lambay in 1904, the island became a breath-taking and rare example where nature and human creativity can thrive harmoniously and symbiotically. Today, Lambay is one of the few places within easy reach of a major European city where visitors can truly experience the power and beauty of nature, while living comfortably among some of the most thought-provoking and detailed Arts & Crafts architecture in the world. The island is 620 acres in size (almost a square mile) and home to a handful of permanent residents who work to maintain the island, its treasures and live alongside the seals, puffins, wallabies, deer and farm animals. It is also the home of Lambay Whiskey, made from the island's volcanic spring water.

Lambay Whiskey VIP Tour Experience on Lambay Island
Lambay Whiskey have announced a VIP Whiskey Tour Experience on Lambay Island.
Lambay Island off the Coast of Dublin
Lambay Island may be barely three miles off the east coast of Ireland, but it retains an air of inaccessible mystery. When WB Yeats visited the island in the 1880’s, he compared his experience to landing on a remote South Seas island for the first time. Now, Lambay is offering private groups a chance to experience a Lambay Whiskey VIP tour. Groups (min 2 and max 12 persons) can now visit this private island from April – October as part of a new cultural and heritage whiskey tour in exclusive partnership with Lambay Irish Whiskey Company (LIWC) and all booking enquiries are managed by the specialist Irish whiskey tour operator, Whiskey Island Tours.
John Callely Jnr., Director of Whiskey Island Tours commented,
“We are delighted to partner with the Baring family and Lambay Irish Whiskey Company on this exclusive tourism offering for Dublin and Irelands east coast. ”
Lambay Island has always had an air of mystery to it, being privately owned by the Baring family since 1904. Lambay is entirely focused on off-grid living and run mainly on renewable energy generated through wind and solar power. Today only 6 people reside there permanently. A place of priceless beauty, Lambay Island is almost hidden in plain sight and holds many tales of dynasty and devilment.
“While we have received a lot of interest already in this product, it does not go without its challenges as our availability on Lambay is decided by times and tides, therefore our tours are not about volume but completely about quality of experience. Since our whiskey story has developed with LIWC, it has provided a natural additional layer to our tourism offering, ”
said Millie Baring, Director of Hospitality for Lambay.
Enjoy the wonderful views of Malahide and Lambay from afar as you pull out of the estuary for a short boat journey to the island. Welcomed by members of the Baring family, you will embark on a guided walking tour around their family home and castle grounds where history and architecture intertwine along with incredible stories of the family lineage, the wildlife, the flora and fauna of this mysterious place.
After the walking tour, guests are invited to discover the unique taste of Lambay Irish Whiskey partaking in a 3- part whiskey tasting masterclass in the quaint surroundings of the island’s Bothy Clubhouse. This tasting includes the story, craft process of Lambay Whiskey, the fine art of blending and finishing before a visit to the bonded warehouse called the Sea Cask Room.
The “Sea Cask Room” on the shore of Lambay Island where Lambay Whiskey is finished in Camus Cognac Casks from Ile de Ré in France.
Additional upgrades are available such as private dining options, overnight accommodation and island safaris to view the wonderful wildlife and nature the island has to offer.
“At a time when visitors and tourists to Ireland are seeking that something different, we see this as a natural extension to our product offering,”
said Senior Brand Manager LIWC, Sabine Sheehan.
“Immersing whiskey lovers in the atmosphere of Lambay Island where we can share the rich stories of the Baring family legacy, the abundance of wildlife and provide whiskey masterclasses is both a unique and premium experience,”
Sheehan continued,

WHEN you think of Ireland's capital you may think the hustle and bustle that goes with any city.
What many may not know, however, is that within the county of Dublin is a stunning island with breathtaking views.
Lambay Island is a family-run private island that offers day-trips and short stays to enjoy the unique scenery.
It provides a sanctuary for nature, history and creativity, the owners said, while celebrating a brilliant heritage.
Just 20 km from the centre of Dublin and 5 km off the coast of Rush, it is the largest island off the east coast of the country.
It has gorgeous landscapes and a range of wildlife unique to the island.

For history buffs, you can immerse yourself in the historical architecture made by Sir Edwin Lutyens and the Baring family.
The island also produces its own whiskey, and provides retreats for those looking to get away.
Visitors can choose from wellness or creative retreats, or can simply opt for an escape to an off-grid paradise.
It even has the remnants of a huge volcano - a nod to it's origin.
The island was made after two continents joined to create Ireland, though it's early history is described as being "obscure" on the website.
After the two joined, the island of Lambay formed from a flecked green stone called Porphyry.
Neolithic ancestors used this stone to create axes over 7000 years ago.
The island attracted many saints, hermits and pirates, and is even thought to be one of the first places that the Vikings landed.
Proof of its ancient history and early settlements found around the harbour date back to the 1st Century AD.
Some of the artefacts found were moved to the Dublin Museum.
The island has steep cliffs on the northern, easter and southern sides, while the western shore is slow-lying.
To visit the island, you can choose from a number of options.
You can choose an individual booking on Eamon McGrattan's Nature and History Walking Tours from €x but ti is not suitable for kids under 12.
It should also be noted that a "reasonable" level of fitness is required.
For a private group booking, Eamon also caters for up to 12 people and offers a bespoke offering, catering to what you would prefer to see on the tour.
There are set fees for groups of six people, 12 people and bigger, and must be arranged on a private group basis.
Lambay organises boat trips between Malahide and the island, included as part of the package for the day trip.
Boat timings are tide dependent and it takes around 25 minutes.
The island is closed to visitors in the winter months.
Lambay Island is described as "a truly unique corner of the earth" and is not to be missed.

Visiting Lambay
Access to Lambay is very limited as it is a private island and usually visitors are welcomed by invitation only. Lambay Whiskey does not have an operating distillery (yet!) or visitor centre on the island, only our bonded warehouse which is not open to the public.
However, we often receive inquiries from locals and tourists alike on how they can come and visit Lambay and we advise checking in with local guide Eamonn Mc Grattan from www.fishandtrips.ie
A walking tour of Lambay and an island viewing from the sea by boat, is indeed a treat when viewing the wildlife and the season is usually from April - October. Weather permitting, this is a five-hour Lambay guided walking tour to see the wildlife and scenery as well as the external of some of the various buildings most weekends.
Two distinguished families.....
Once upon a most unusual island, two entrepreneurial spirits from two very old families decided to form a unique partnership. Together, they’d make an Irish whiskey. But not just any whiskey – theirs would be one of dynasty and devilment, of rarity and refinement, unique tasting, and masterfully crafted.
Their idea was to create an innovative Irish whiskey inspired by the island of Lambay , the ancestral home of Alexander Baring , and finished with the techniques and expertise of Maison Camus, the ancestral home of Cyril Camus, Cognac.
