Why take a hunting trip to Argentina?

There are many good reasons why Argentina, the second largest country in South America, provides the best hunting, which made it very popular with hunters all over the world. Argentina was blessed with vast wild territories extending from north to south and from east to west, with a great variety of climates and landscapes which provide perfect habitats for numerous species of big game and also small prey and birds.

In addition to indigenous game and birds, exotic species were introduced in Argentina at the turn of the 19th Century for the purpose of hunting. Those animals found ideal environments and spread throughout the territory, reaching great numbers and excellent specimens. There are many species you may hunt.

Another benefit of hunting in Terra Pampa is that you can organize your hunting trip with the conviction that you are going to experiment real, authentic free-range hunting, something which is almost unique in the world. There are artificial barriers, usually wire fences, in every hunting property, but they are aimed at containing cattle, or keeping unauthorized people or vehicles out. Game can easily roam free through the fences, either jumping over them or passing under them.

Argentina is famous for the great variety of its climates, landscapes and places to see, as well as the warmth, hospitality and friendliness of its people. You could make your hunting trip in Argentina a comprehensive tour, not only a luxury hunting trip but also a whole Argentine experience.

Is Argentina good for hunting?

Argentina is a world-class hunting destination.   With a variety of available species and vast expanses of terrain to explore, it’s no wonder Argentina has become one of the most popular places for hunting. Whether you’re looking to hunt deer, wild boar, antelope, or any other species, Argentina has something to offer every hunter.

In Argentina, there are several regions known for their hunting.   One of the most popular is the province of La Pampa,   where some of the country’s best deer and wild boar hunting can be found.

But  hunting  is  only  part  of  the  experience .  At  Terra  P ampa ,  we  offer  more  than  just  the  hunt  –  we  provide  our  guests  with   a range of activities and amenities   to ensure that their stay is as enjoyable and memorable as possible .

What animals can you hunt in Argentina?

Argentina is home to some of the most sought-after big game animals in the world, including the red stag, blackbuck antelope, wild boar, and water buffalo . The red stag, in particular, is considered the king of the Argentine big game, with its majestic antlers and challenging hunting experience. RedStag was introduced in Argentina by Pedro Luro in 1906 for the purpose of hunting.  They find the perfect environment to reproduce themselves on the thick bushes of the Pampa’s.  The blackbucks have been introduced many years later, these animals live on the plains and the dunes of the Pampa’s. Terra Pampa covers such a large territory (more than 85,000 acres), that it allows us to have both environments, bush for the red deer and plains and dunes for the blackbuck.

If big game hunting is not your cup of tea, Argentina also offers a range of small game animals to hunt, including some of the best wingshooting . Argentina is known for its high-volume dove and pigeon hunting, with millions of birds migrating to the country each year. Terra Pampa is one of the best places where you can combine doves, pigeons and perdiz.

What are the best months to hunt in Argentina?

The best months to hunt in Argentina vary depending on the animal and region you plan to hunt. In general, the hunting season in Argentina runs from March to September, with the peak season being from May to July.

For big game hunting, such as red stag and blackbuck antelope, the best months are generally from March to May, as this is when the animals are in their rutting season and are more active. However, for water buffalo hunting, the best months are from June to August, when the temperatures are cooler, and the animals are more active during the day.

For small game hunting, such as doves and pigeons, the best months are from May to August, as this is when the weather is cooler, and the birds are more active during the day. However, perdiz hunting is best from June to August, as this is when the birds are in their breeding season and are more active.

What to know before taking a hunting trip to Argentina?

  • VISAS : No visa is required for citizens of the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, or the European Union for stays of less than 90 days.
  • UPON ARRIVAL : All international flights will be arriving at Ezeiza International Airport. If required, once clients have cleared customs (and once they have declared their firearms if they are carrying one), they will be met in the main hall by Terra Pampa crew.
  • GEAR & CLOTHES : Because of the wide temperature swings we recommend dressing in layers so that you can quickly add or shed layers depending on temperature change. For hunting during the day we recommend wearing comfortable camouflage hunting clothes and good quality waterproof hunting boots since it is common to walk for several hours around the bush. Warm clothing is essential for night hunts as the temperatures can drop significantly after the sun goes down.
  • LICENCES : Terra Pampa will get the hunter´s hunting license and tags. The cost of the license (between 300-400$) and tag (150-200$) will deppend on the animals the hunter will hunt.

Frequently asked questions about hunting in Argentina

What international flights are available to fly to argentina.

Depending on the airline and the class clients choose to travel in, they should be able to find very interesting rates. Some of the airlines we could recommend and their websites are: Aerolineas Argentinas, United Airlines, LATA, Lufhtansa, British Airways, Delta, Air France, Iberia, American Airlines, others.

What domestic flights are available in Argentina?

There are three possibilities, commercial, chartered and private flights:

• Commercial Flights: Aerolíneas Argentinas is the only commercial flight that lands in Santa Rosa airport. Clients should book their domestic flight before departure from their country of origin and should plan their connecting international flights accordingly.

• Chartered Flights: Terra Pampa has agreements with private airplane companies and is able to get very competitive fares for its clients, this airplane’s land is Santa Rosa. This service is more expensive than commercial airplanes but we believe they are more comfortable, flexible and at the same time allow our clients to see the landscape on their way to their final destination.

• Private Plane: Terra Pampa has its own private airtrip approved for small commercial flights. It takes 1:30 hr from Buenos Aires to land in the ranch.

Are there any other means of transportation to the ranch?

Ground transportations: direct transfer by car, van from Ezeiza International Airport to the ranch or commercial bus from Buenos Aires could be a good and cheap option if you are expending a few days in Buenos Aires.

What kind of clothes should I bring?

Because of the wide temperature swings we recommend dressing in layers so that you can quickly add or shed layers depending on temperature change. For hunting during the day we recommend wearing comfortable camouflage hunting clothes and good quality waterproof hunting boots since it is common to walk for several hours around the bush. Warm clothing is essential for night hunts as the temperatures can drop significantly after the sun goes down. Gaiters are a must because of the ever present “rosetas” and all the other types of stickers, briars, thorns that seem to be present everywhere in the bush. Although it doesn’t rain much, a light set of rain gear is always a good to have along.

Are there any special vaccinations required?

No, Argentina is free of any public health risks and is very safe for travel. However, anytime you travel to a foreign country you should check with the US Department of Health for updated information.

What is the electrical standard in Argentina?

Electrical power in Argentina is supplied at 220 volts, 50 Hz. If you bring any type of electrical appliance with you (razor, charger, etc.) you should also bring the appropriate adapter. Plugs are continental flat 3-pin or round 2-pin. We also have USB ports in each of the rooms.

Are there any firearms available for rent at the ranch?

Yes, we have firearms available in a variety of calibers (22, 223, 300 Win Mag, 30-06, 308 Win Mag and 375 H&H for rent at the ranch, all of them Zeiss, Swarovski. Our Shotguns are all Beretta and Benelli, 12 and 20 Ga.

Will I be able to shoot my guns before the hunt starts?

Yes, scopes and firearm’s precision can be altered during flights so we will provide an appropriate area upon arrival in order to practice some shots and make sure their bullet is heading the way you want. If you are renting guns you will be able to try them also.

How far do I have to shoot?

Most of the shots are taken between 30 and 150 yds. Except for the Blackbuck hunts where you can shoot even more than 250 yards, but only if you are confident enough with your shooting, otherwise try to close in to 250 yards or less.

Do you provide internet access?

We do provide wireless internet access.

Do you have a laundry service?

Yes, we will take care of your laundry so there is no need to pack a lot. We charge 40 u$ per week.

Are there any taxidermists available in Argentina?

Caichue can put you in touch with different taxidermy for you to get the best price in the market. Both taxidermists have more than 10 years of experience in the industry.

How is the process of exporting my trophies?

After the hunt we put you in touch with the exporting company that will send you an information request (name, destination of trophies, port of entry, import broker, etc), their fees and conditions and a quote for their exporting job. Once you agree with this we then take all trophies to Buenos Aires to the exporter warehouse who takes over and carries out the job in coordination with the import broker you have nominated. We follow up to make sure he delivers on time.

How can I pay in Argentina?

Terra Pampa accepts the following methods of payment: cash, checks and wired deposits. A 3% exchange tax may apply for check payments. In case our clients decide to purchase something at the airport or in a shop along the way, US Dollars and Euros are generally taken everywhere. Foreign currencies can be exchanged in banks and authorized bureaus. American Express, VISA and MasterCard credit cards are widely accepted in restaurants, hotels and shops. There may be difficulties in changing traveler’s checks outside Buenos Aires. We can assist you if you need to change foreign currencies once in Argentina for private expenses.

How much is the accustomed tip in Argentina?

10-15% of the amount of the check is usually left in coffee stores and restaurants. Doormen, porters, and ushers in cinemas and theaters are also generally tipped. Tips are only left if clients have been satisfied with the service they’ve received.

Can Terra Pampa help us during our tourist stay in Argentina?

Yes, of course we can recommend hotels with good locations during your stay in Buenos Aires and help you with the transfers. If you want a full guided tour all over Argentina we have a tourism agency that we recommend.

You should arrive in Buenos Aires international airport ( Ezeiza - EZE ) , and then change to the domestic airport ( Jorge Newbery - AEP ) to take your domestic flight to your final destination.

A Valid passport is required. Every visitor who enters into the country must have a valid passport up to date. We highly recommend checking their passport’s expiration date in advance to make sure it does not expire during their stay in our country. No VISA is required for U.S. citizens. Argentine reciprocity tax is no longer necessary. Citizens of the European Union do not need a visa to enter Argentina if they are not planning to stay longer than 90 days. Residents of other countries have to contact their nearest Argentine consulate to obtain this information.

Once you arrive at your final destination, we provide transportation in and out of the airport. Upon arrival you should look for a sign that will read your name or your party name.

Yes, Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls, Patagonia Hiking, and much more are all a short distance away and we can help you to organize them.

Accidents can happen. SAAS recommends a Travel Insurance plan for your next trip.

50% of the basic package cost deposit is required to reserve dates. Deposits are not refundable. In the event that the hunter cannot make the trip on the scheduled date the booked dates can be rescheduled and rolled over to the next following hunting season with no fees or extra cost. The deposit and pricing conditions are honored at 100% value.

Accommodation FAQs

Hunting FAQs

Each lodge has a large selection of guns available for use. Rifle cartridges and shotgun shots will be provided. If guests have a particular gauge that they would like to use, please contact us for more information.

If the lodge offers other species, you can decide at that moment and pay the trophy at the lodge.

Every hunt is fully guided by our very experienced guides. Hunts are 1 x 1 and 2 x 1.

Hunts are conducted on 4WD vehicles. Final approach is done on foot, spot and stalk. Hunters may expect to stalk a few miles per day and it implies light hiking on relatively flat terrain.

Trophy FAQs

The trophy shipping is managed by our broker agent; he will request a few forms and documents and dispatch your trophies back home. South American Adventure Safaris is happy to refer our guests to the best of Argentina's taxidermist. Buenos Aires The Start To The Journey

Your journey starts in Buenos Aires city which is the main destination of the international flights to Argentina. From there we could drive to the vast pampas nearby where big herds of blackbuck and axis deer roam in free range or, if bird shooting is your game, we could also drive to the rolling hills of Entre Rios province where we offer the best mixed bag bird hunting of the country including Argentina's highlight: high volume dove shooting near Buenos Aires city.

For those who like Red Stag Hunting, we fly from a domestic airport in dowtown BA to the main big game hunting areas of Argentina: La Pampa (bush hunting) and Patagonia country (mountain hunting) where the abundance and quality of free ranged red stag are amazing.

Red deer were introduced for the very first time in the bush of the province of La Pampa in 1909 and found the perfect environment to thrive to the level of population of the present days. Few years afterwards were taken to Patagonia mountains where they also found a perfect habitat for them. That's why those two regions are the best red stag hunting areas of our country.

Many other big game species have been introduced almost one hundred years ago in those traditional big game hunting areas of Argentina like axis deer, blackbuck, fallow deer, water buffalo, Pere David's deer, wild boar, mouflon, wild goat and multihorn ram among some other.

In summary, Argentina offers a great variety of hunting which makes it a prominent place in the hunting world.

Dove Hunting & Wingshooting

As for bird shooting, our country has hands down the best wingshooting of anywhere in the world. Córdoba province is well known worldwide but other provinces of Argentina like Entre Rios, which is located much closer to Buenos Aires, offers unmatched high volume dove shooting month and and month out.

Mixed bag wingshooting is also fantastic in our country. Duck, Perdiz and European hare over dogs are hunting experiences you will soon not forget. Of course Pigeon and Dove are the most well known bird hunting in Argentina. Our company is proud to offer them all together in the East side of Entre Rios province at a very short distance from the capital city of Argentina: Buenos Aires. It is only two hours by car over a brand new four lane highway. It amazes our guests that it’s such a short distance from this shooting paradise.

Upon your arrival our professional staff is at your service to deliver an unforgettable outdoor experience here in Argentina. You are guaranteed to enjoy your Argentina Bird Hunting adventure with Argentina Big Hunting.

THE ROOST ARGENTINA

HUNTING LODGE & OUTFITTER

Wooden Panels_edited_edited_edited_edited.jpg

John Wilson & Nestor Villareal

My father's work carried us to Venezuela, Argentina and Uruguay where I spent lots of my time learning about birds, air rifles, shotguns and training hunting dogs. Even today when I land at the international airport in Uruguay, I chuckle remembering that my father and I used to train his pointers on the same airstrip. I enjoyed my many days of hunting after I returned to the States, but I always dreamed of one day sharing the amazing hunting experiences of my youth. The inspiration for building "The Roost" was that some of the most fulfilling moments of my lifetime have been as an outfitter, in Argentina, sharing this passion with others. Selva, Santiago Del Estero

“The Roost” Argentina is run by its owners with headquarters located in Selva, Santiago Del Estero and Cordoba City, Cordoba. We have use of two other operations in different locations so we can secure that hunters leave Argentina with a successful hunt. Having great dove, pigeon, perdiz, duck and fishing within short reach was all it took to convince us to invest in this area. We hope to be hunting and fishing in the Selva region for years to come, and for this reason alone, we must become caretakers of wildlife and do all we can to preserve what we have today for future generations.

How to Plan an Epic Argentina Hunting and Fishing Trip

Image may contain Road Wheel Machine Gravel Dirt Road Alloy Wheel Spoke Tire Car Wheel Transportation and Vehicle

Growing up in Upstate New York, I started fishing with my dad as early as I can remember, and hunting at 16. He taught me how to identify different species of waterfowl, how to shoot and clean a gun, and which flies to use to catch trout. No matter where I am in the world, the change of leaves means grouse and woodcock hunting and the beginning of deer season; the first snowfall is a sign that duck and goose season is on the way. I’ve always hated hiking for hiking’s sake, yet I will happily walk for miles in search of game. I’ve also never been a morning person, but I’ll easily wake up at 4 a.m. on the coldest winter day for a duck hunt, or at first light in the summer to fly-fish some deep pool of a river. It’s early mornings like these, hovering in the cold of a duck blind with family and good friends over a thermos full of coffee, that make me feel alive and connected to the world in a way that nothing else does. It’s no wonder I opted to buy 130 acres of farmland in a familiar corner of Upstate before I considered buying a primary residence in the city.

But while I’m a kid from Binghamton, I’ve always been a sucker for big cities and all they have to offer. As an art student and later as a professional photographer living in New York City and circling the globe on assignment, I became the rare guy who loves an ice-cold American beer out of a can about as much as a French Bordeaux—and I’m as comfortable in a pair of waders as I am in Belgian loafers. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to travel extensively to hunt (woodcock and grouse in the Adirondacks, wild boar in Texas) and fish (salmon at remote camps in Alaska, trout in the Spanish Pyrenees ). But it wasn’t until I went to Argentina—starting in Patagonia, the Western Hemisphere’s southernmost tip that includes 260,000 square miles of Argentina and a slip of Chile, up through the central agricultural plains that surround the colonial city of Córdoba—that I found the perfect union of all my loves: nature, wine, and an effortlessly sophisticated approach to food and decor.

Fly-fishing at dawn on the Chimehuín River.

More than any other country I’ve visited, Argentina is designed for the gentleman sportsman. It’s nearly impossible to get your head around the vastness of the land and the sky when you’re standing thigh-deep in the clear waters of the Chimehuín River, casting for brown and rainbow trout that have grown improbably fat thanks to the river’s catch-and-release policy. Unlike expansive landscapes in the American West—where, outside of national parks , nature inevitably bleeds into strip malls or suburban housing developments—in much of Argentina, there are few man-made structures to help you grasp the scale of the place; your only clue may be the silhouette of a gaucho herding cattle against the backdrop of a Jurassic landscape. It’s equally moving to watch the sunrise over the seemingly endless fields of head-high sunflowers as you head out to hunt doves in the agricultural province of Córdoba, which has, over the past few years, become one of the finest wing-shooting destinations in the world.

More than any other country I’ve visited, Argentina is designed for the gentleman sportsman.

Yet it’s more than this. There’s an unfussy elegance, the softer side of the sporting experience, that is at odds with its more macho, blue-collar American counterpart. Add to that a financial accessibility for this level of luxury that doesn’t exist elsewhere in the world. Things that don’t seem like much are, in context, everything when you consider the alternative, which typically involves a motor lodge off some highway, a burger from a diner, and definitely no frills. Outside of a handful of exclusive lodges in Europe and the United States, refinements like lavender-scented sheets in the guest rooms, someone offering to stoke a wood-fired sauna for you, a handwritten note that cocktails will be at 9 p.m., after the evening hunt, and a kitchen that turns the stag or wild boar you shot into the night’s asado and serves it with an exceptionally good malbec just don’t cross over into the hunting experience. And while these touches are certainly due in part to European immigrants who flooded Argentina in the wake of both world wars (the melting pot vibe is palpable throughout the country: Middle European efficiency, Parisian style, Italian panache), there’s also an easy homegrown sense of hospitality that is a lifestyle vernacular all its own.

How We Did It: Your One-Week Guide to Hunting and Fishing Across Argentina

Covering distances by car and short flights will let you experience a range of landscapes and game. If you’re just along for the ride, there are plenty of non-hunting and -fishing activities at each stop. My wife, Yolanda, and our daughter, Clara, joined me on this trip. (Turned out the right time to hit my dream trifecta of stag, birds, and trout aligned with my daughter’s Spring Break.) Our spring—fall in Argentina—means far fewer tourists than during South America’s summer, and still-warm weather. Since we had just one week, we enlisted our friend and travel specialist Maita Barrenechea of Mai 10 , an Argentine expert on Buenos Aires who is also super-knowledgeable about the best places to hunt and fish throughout the country.

Get Your Bearings

Start with a couple of days in Buenos Aires. After stumbling off a long flight, the last thing you’ll want to do is catch a domestic flight to Patagonia. We stayed at the Alvear Palace Hotel , a grand French-style palace dating to the 1930s that was recently refreshed without sacrificing any of its original charm. We loved the concierge, who remembered our names after one meeting (and directed us to the best ice-cream joint, Persicco , around the corner), the over-the-top breakfast buffet that had addictive mini-churros, and ending the day at the hotel’s wood-paneled bar, where black-tied barmen serve the perfect high-low combination: spot-on martinis with Pringles.

The hotel is in the tony Recoleta neighborhood (within walking distance of Eva Perón’s tomb in Recoleta Cemetery ), home to excellent shopping. (Bring U.S. dollars—American cash cuts the price in half.) Our favorite store was Arandú , a vast four-story emporium of Argentinian craftsmanship that stocks hunting and polo equipment alongside the best edit of alpaca ponchos, leather shoes and belts, canvas espadrilles, and beautiful leather and sterling silver maté bowls with silver straws. A short stroll from the Alvear, the cobblers at Guido have been crafting beautifully cut custom leather loafers for more than 60 years. Get measured and have them shipped home. You won’t find better shopping the rest of the trip, so even though it’s the start, stock up on souvenirs and gifts.

The Most Beautiful Places in Italy for Nature Lovers, Art Buffs, and Foodies

For meals, we mostly chose places that were a short walk from our hotel. For lunch we liked La Biela , a neighborhood sidewalk café that’s been around since the 1950s, and went with the local order: a Milanese-style pressed cheese sandwich followed by a Fernet-Branca digestif. For our first Argentinian steak dinner, we headed to Fervor . The vacio del fino (thin flank steak), rare, with a spicy arugula salad, is the way to go.

The Best Detour

Our original itinerary had us flying direct from Buenos Aires to San Martín de los Andes in Neuquén Province, the northernmost swath of Patagonia. But over a few drinks with Maita, she convinced us to fly into San Carlos de Bariloche, a fairly touristy ski town on Patagonia’s Nahuel Huapi Lake, and then drive to the mountain village of Villa La Angostura, about an hour northwest of the airport in the heart of Patagonia’s lake district. Her reasoning: The ride through lake country, between Villa La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes, is one of the most beautiful in the country.

Maita had arranged for a naturalist to pick us up at the airport and take us into the mountains above Bariloche to go condor spotting. She’d also orchestrated a mountaintop lunch prepared by Lucas Mallman, the nephew of Argentine chef Francis Mallmann. That meal—trout, skirt steak, and vegetables grilled à la plancha over an open fire and topped with chimichurri, washed down with chilled torrentés (a crisp, easy Argentinian white) and ending with dulce de leche crêpes—was one of the best we’d ever had. We didn’t see a condor, but it didn’t matter.

After this detour, we picked up our rental car back at the Bariloche airport (a 4x4 is your best bet) and drove the hour to Villa La Angostura—a rugged winter sports destination during the South American winter, but a sleepy town that draws mostly hikers from November through April. We stayed at Las Balsas , an intimate and unassuming Relais & Châteaux property right on Nahuel Huapi Lake, less than two miles outside the center of town. Its 15 rooms are minimally but comfort-ably furnished (blond wood and white down comforters), and all have spectacular lake views. Every morning, we brought our coffee out to the dock and watched the moored sailboats on the misty, glassy lake as the light changed by the minute. The concierge, a Clefs d’Or member, gave us trail and restaurant recommendations, but we really just wanted to stay put at Las Balsas: The food was excellent (we loved the breakfast of poached eggs and local sausages topped with more chimichurri), and we fell hard for the indoor-outdoor pool. The whole vibe reminded us of Lake Tahoe in the 1970s—in the best possible way.

The three-and-a-half-hour drive that Maita made us change our plans for was absolutely worth it—a journey that took us through rolling foothills and wide valleys and past freshwater lakes as we climbed from forest to high desert. I think we pulled over at every turnout. Much of the landscape looked like Wyoming, but wilder—as in wild horses trotting down the middle of the highway, totally unfazed by our car. We continued our final stretch to Tipiliuke Lodge , about 20 minutes outside San Martín de los Andes, a nine-room rustically comfortable lodge I’d stayed in a decade prior and couldn’t wait to share with Yolanda and Clara.

Tipiliuke is 50,000 acres of pure hunting and fishing magic—it’s home to hundreds of wild boar and European stag and miles of river packed with wily trout. The owners, Kevin and María José Tiemersma, have been running the property for more than 20 years. They love the land and what they do, and it shows: They’re hosts in the truest sense—gracious and warm, as if welcoming friends, while vigilant about the little things (ironed-sheets, a fresh cocktail before you realize you’ve finished the first). When we pulled up to the property, down a long dusty road, the first thing we saw was a lawn filled with stag mounts: These were the trophies from the season’s hunts being prepped to ship out to guests. Kevin met us and immediately started in on the schedule. Fishing? Early-morning hunt? Trail rides for Yolanda and Clara? We agreed to it all. I spent the next few days trout fishing with only some luck (this late in the season, the fish aren’t easily fooled), and Yolanda and Clara went for daily horseback rides and hikes. I did get a stag, but the real trophy was a pig of a brown trout nearly 30 inches long.

When Doves Fly

We caught a two-hour flight back to Buenos Aires, where I said good-bye to Clara and Yolanda before jumping on a short flight to Córdoba, smack in the center of the country, for what I’d been told would be the best wing-shooting of my life. I stayed at Guayascate , a ten-room lodge in the foothills of the Sierra Chicas that, with its adobe-like exterior, infinity pool, spa, and wine bar, was more like a high-end desert retreat than a hunting lodge. Looks aside, the place is dead serious about getting birds. There are close to 35 million doves in the province of Córdoba (they’re attracted to, and devastate, the region’s crops—hunters are actually welcome here), which means birds are constantly whizzing by, often in groups of five or six, like a mini squadron of fighter jets. This kind of shooting is intense and acrobatic, and it took me several passes of doves to master the fast pace and timing it required, and even longer to come down from the adrenaline high of it. Thankfully, the lodge ends every day with an incredible asado out in the field (salads, homemade bread, three cuts of beef cooked slowly over hot coals), with bottles of delicious Argentine reds and whites from nearby Mendoza.

Argentina is the eighth-largest country in the world

Argentina is the eighth-largest country in the world. While it’s well known for fine wines, soccer, the tango, and Eva Peron, over the last decade, the country has emerged as the premier reverse season fly-fishing & hunting destination—because winter in the U.S. means the kickoff to summer in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s easy to reach Buenos Aires via overnight flights, and visitors to this fascinating nation rave about the hospitality, warmth, and sense of cultural and family pride shared by the Argentine people.

Since red deer were introduced into Argentina more than a hundred years ago, they have flourished throughout many ranges in the country. Argentina has some of the world’s best free-range red stag hunting in the northwestern regions of Patagonia. The remoteness, endless land, huge ranches, friendly peolple and abundance of wild game, puts the country as unique hunting destination.

However, not all stag hunts are created equal. It is important to choose the right outfitter.

Red Stag Patagonia  is brought to you by the team at David Denies Bird Hunting and their partner Sebastian F. Casado. For over 30 years David Denies has operated the finest bird hunting lodges in South America and has deservedly built a reputation for providing world-class sport supported by impeccable service and lodging. Red Stag Patagonia mirrors the commitment to quality and integrity.

The hunting season begins March 1st and ends in mid-June, with the optimal period for roaring red stags lasting through the month of March and April. With so much riding on a hunt, you need to consider your options carefully–and work with a guide and outfitter that cares as much about your success as you do.

At each lodge, our commitment is the same. We work tirelessly before, during, and after the season to offer our guests an authentic and rewarding experience. We pay attention to the smallest details—from being on time every time to the quality of our wines, to the type of vehicles we choose. Our Argentine big game lodges host only a limited number of guests each week, again ensuring great service and plenty of “elbow room” in the lodge and on the field.

Hunting in Argentina: What you need to know.

argentina hunting and fishing trips

A tough bull with a bad temper and a big cat. A beautiful black antelope with spiral horns, a native of India. A local bird that reverses gender roles, with the male building the nest and hatching eggs. Bright colored exotic ducks. In the shadow of the Andes, on the wide-open Pampas, in the wild Patagonia or along its mighty rivers, hunting in Argentina is much more than unlimited dove and the red stag. This post gives you a brief overview of what, where, and when you can hunt in Argentina .

Hunting grounds of Argentina

Argentina is the eighth largest country in the world by land area, stretching for 2,360 miles (3,800 km) from the Tierra del Fuego near the Antarctic to the subtropics near the northern border with Bolivia . Its landscape is dominated by the Pampas, a vast grassland that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Andes. Part of the Pampas have been turned into flourishing agricultural lands, while others remain in their grassland glory, and serve as pastures for free-ranging cattle – and habitat for big and small game.

Another important landmark is the Andes, a mighty mountain range that marks Argentina’s border with Chile. In the north, the foothills of the Andes are covered with lush subtropical forests, while the more to the south, the lower, but also the wilder and more desolate the mountains become. The northern part of the country is known as Patagonia, and is a comparatively wild and untouched by civilization area. If you’re looking for a big-game wilderness adventure, seek your outfitter in Patagonia.

Mighty rivers flow from the Andes into the Atlantic through Argentina, two of them – Paraná and Uruguay – building valleys with flourishing agricultural lands that provide food to diverse species that can also find cover in riverbeds, woods, and orchids. Further on to the north, there is the Chaco region, with hot and semi-arid plains covered with forests, shrublands, and savannas, and in the north-west you find subtropical climate with lush forests in the mountains.

Game bird hunting in Argentina

Wingshooting is what attracts most hunters to Argentina, and for a good reason: the numbers of birds in the country must be seen to be believed. Along with the world-famous pigeon and dove shooting, the country also offers upland bird hunting and outstanding opportunities for waterfowl hunting.

Waterfowl hunting

If you’re anything like a duck hunter, you should definitely consider adding a day or two of duck shooting to your Argentinean adventure. Just look at the photos of exciting and exotic local species, such as the whistling duck , white-cheeked pintail , rosy-billed pochard , or red shoveler ! And they are found in such numbers that it justifies a dedicated trip.

Waterfowl hunting opportunities exist all over Argentina, but the highest concentration of options is found in the valleys of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers, in the Entre Rios and Santa Fe , as well as the Buenos Aires provinces. These trips can be easily combined with fishing (known as “cast-and-blast trips”) and/or big-game hunting, especially for such animals as water buffalo.

A hunter with local ducks, Argentina

Upland bird hunting in Argentina

Locally known as “perdiz”, which is the Spanish for “ partridge “, the bird that you’re going to hunt in Argentina has nothing to do with the grey (Am. E.: “Hungarian”) or red-legged partridges. Allow us to introduce spotted tinamou (Nothura maculosa), a small, plump bird, with brown camouflaging plumage that includes distinctive spotting and barring. Endemic to the Pampas, spotted tinamou has curious reproduction patterns, with the male bird responsible for nesting and incubation, and usually prefers hiding or running to flying

Much like the Old World partridge, perdiz is an excellent bird to hunt over pointers and setters , with Brittany spaniel apparently the top choice of local outfitters who offer this hunt. Good perdiz grounds usually happen to be good pigeon and dove grounds, too, and most outfitters offer “mixed bag” trips that allow you to pursue both types of bird shooting.

Pigeon and dove shooting

Pigeon and dove shooting in Argentina hardly needs an additional introduction. Most offers are spread along the Argentinean grain belt that covers northern Pampas from Buenos Aires and westwards up to the Andes, including but not limited to San Luis , La Pampa, and Cordoba provinces. Where the climate allows the farmers to reap three or four harvests a year, pigeons and dove flocks literally cover the skies and turn daytime into… well, not exactly night, but it can get noticeably darker when a big flock passes over.

Pigeons and especially doves are considered pests, and a serious threat to grain fields. For doves there is no limit, and if you’re not careful with the empties you you might find yourself standing in a pile of spent casings like Charlie Sheen’s hero in “Hot Shots 2”. The province of Cordoba is legendary for pigeon and dove shooting, but many other areas leave nothing to this famous destination

Big game hunting in Argentina

Big-game hunting in Argentina is every bit as great as bird shooting. Red deer is the king of the game animals also there, but there are many other big-game animals, local and introduced, and hunting opportunities range from easy to extra challenging adventures in the desolate foothills of the Andes

Red deer hunting

Red deer have been introduced to Argentina over a century ago. Now the country is one of the best red deer hunting destinations in the world, combining excellent trophy quality with first-rate hunting lodges. Red deer opportunities exist in many of Argentina’s provinces, from the wildest corners of Patagonia to rural areas next to Buenos Aires. It’s typical for Argentinean outfitters to have a fenced area, where they keep their breeding stock, and a wide tract of free range hunting grounds.

When booking a red deer hunt in Argentina , think about what kind of experience you are after. There are a lot of options, from spot-and-stalk hunts in savannah type habitat, to rolling hills that remind one of classic deer stalking in the Scottish Highlands to wooded mountains. For a true wilderness adventure, look for Patagonian hunts in such provinces as Chubut and Neuquén , but bear in mind hunting there is a challenge, and success is far from guaranteed.

Hunting Argentina’s native mammals

Most big-game hunters in Argentina pursue animals that have been introduced there by humans, but there are options to pursue some local fauna, too. Those include brocket deer , white-lipped peccary, and puma. Puma hunting can be on a bait, by stalking, or with a pack of hounds, while brocket deer and the peccary are hunted by still-hunting at feeding areas. When booking a hunt for native species, such as puma , peccary, and brocket deer, make sure with your outfitter whether your trophy can be legally exported. This is not possible in some cases, even though the hunt itself may be perfectly legal.

Other big-game hunting options in Argentina

One introduced species in Argentina that deserves serious attention is the blackbuck . Originally stemming from India, they are not allowed to be hunted within their natural range. However, the Pampas of Argentina are very similar to the highland grasslands of India where the blackbuck originated, and free-range hunting is exciting and challenging. The same can be said about the water buffalo , which feels itself as much at home, and is as ill-tempered and seemingly bulletproof, as in its natural Asian habitats.

While feral sheep and goats are mostly an extra animal to be taken at chance, some outfitters are working on free-range populations of “ Texas Dall ” and “ Patagonian Dall “. Those are “designer breeds” of sheep that combine the white fur of the Dall’s sheep with impressive, Marco Polo type horns; if free ranging populations establish themselves in the Andes, Argentina may gain recognition as a mountain hunting destination as well.

In addition, many outfitters in Argentina offer excellent hunting opportunities for fallow deer , axis deer , mouflon , and wild boar , as well as such exotics as Pere David’s deer and the Balearean Boc .

Best time for hunting in Argentina

A hunting trip in Argentina is possible all year round, but of course some species and locations are best to hunt in a certain period. For red deer this is definitely April, when the Game of Kings have their rut in the Southern Hemisphere. For red stag hunting enthusiasts, that offers a chance to live that wonderful time twice in the year – in the spring in Argentina or New Zealand , and in the fall in the Old World. You can have a good time hunting water buffalo and wild boar throughout the year, while the best time for axis deer and blackbuck is believed to be the southern hemisphere summer, from October to April.

As for birds hunting, waterfowl is best during the Argentine fall and winter, typically from May to August. Doves and pigeons are equally numerous in all times of the year, but the climate of some provinces may be a decisive factor. While central regions such as Cordoba enjoy pleasant weather throughout the year, in the northern, that is, hotter provinces such as Santa Fe , Tucumán , or Santiago del Estero you might want to schedule your trip for the South American winter. The cooler and drier months from April to October work better for hunting and fishing than the wet season in the subtropical climate.

By contrast, in such southern regions as Rio Negro , especially if your outfitter operates at a considerable altitude in the Andes, you might have to deal with cold and snow on late season hunts.

How much does it cost?

Pigeon and dove shooting in Argentina is priced starting at about $300-$400 a day. This in itself is not too expensive, considering that the price includes accommodations in a comfortable lodge and excellent meals with local wines, but it’s not nearly the end of the bill. A substantial extra is ammunition, and we can be talking about a thousand rounds a day and more – don’t forget to factor it in, as well as other items such as tips to personnel, gun rental and/or permits, etc. Waterfowl and upland hunts start at $800-$900 a day, but given a much lower ammo consumption, the total costs end up about the same.

With big-game hunts, a rough estimate is $500 a day plus trophy, which may run from $1,500-$2,500 for a blackbuck to $2,500-$500 for a water buffalo. Red deer hunts start at about $4,000. Mind that some outfitters price their trophy fees according to the size of the antlers, while others go for a flat fee regardless of the trophy size. A gold medal-sized deer may push the price well over $10,000. Shop carefully, in advance, and wait for special promo deals that may bring you “any size” deer at a flat fee, and/or a chance at an extra animal such as fallow deer, blackbuck, or wild boar thrown in.

Travel to Argentina

Most international hunters arrive to Buenos Aires, and then take a local flight to the provincial capital where the hunt will take place, or, if the operation is not far from the capital, to get there in the outfitter’s car. When travelling with arms, it is recommended, if possible, to make your port of entry Cordoba or another provincial capital, as most hunters report that processing of documents is easier and takes less time there.

However, this is not always possible, as most international flights are serviced by Ezeisa Airport (EZE), while most domestic flights go through the Newbery Airport (AEP), which is across town. If you need to change airports, and you most probably will, be sure to allow enough time; a stopover in Buenos Aires is actually a good idea. Most outfitters speak good English, but it’s a good idea to pick up some basic Spanish to communicate with bird boys and for random local interactions. Modern language learning apps are just right for the job.

Citizens of the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and the European Union can enter Argentina for stay under 90 days without a visa. Gun import permits are necessary, though. For non-automatic rifles and shotguns it may be possible to acquire the permit on arrival, while semi-automatic weapons are more strictly regulated. Your outfitter will be able to help you navigate through laws and requirements but be sure to ask them in advance. It might be easiest to rent a gun from the outfitters who usually have enough to choose from; if you can shoot well with a regular-stocked Beretta or Browning over/under, that would be the recommended route.

Argentina beyond hunting

First things first: there is fishing . Whether going after the native golden dorado in the mighty rivers of the north, or the introduced brown trout in the clear mountain lakes and streams in the Andes, fishing in Argentina is exciting and totally recommended to any angling enthusiast. Even if you just wouldn’t mind casting a line into some water as a side activity to hunting, explore the fishing opportunities of Argentina before booking your hunting trip.

Argentina is best known worldwide for tango, steaks, and wine, and the reputation is more than deserved. Wine tours, first-rate cuisine in local restaurants, and the night life in Buenos Aires, are second-to-none if you’re into such things. Alternatively, there are numerous opportunities for hiking, mountaineering, whitewater rafting, and even, in the right time of year, mountain skiing. You can admire colonial architecture in the old cities or explore pre-Columbian cultures, or one of the amazing blends of the local and immigrant lifestyle such as the gaucho.

With its rich fauna and diverse landscapes, well-developed hunting industry and numerous other attractions, Argentina should be on every travelling hunter’s list.

It depends on the species to be hunted: Red stag 95%, Fallow deer 95%, Blackbuck 50%, Wild goat: 90%, Patagonian ram: 90%, Mouflon sheep: 75%, Multihorned sheep: 95%, Russian boar: 70%, Puma: 20 up to 50% depending the time of the year, Pere David’s deer: 90%, Water Buffalo 50%.

When hunting Red Stag, it will be the responsibility of the guide to judge the stags score correctly and if any stag taken scores higher than estimated by the guide, the client will not be required to pay additional trophy fees.

Yes, of course. We strongly recommend exporting your trophies at a later date, the cost will depend on the size, height and weight of the crate to be exported.

You must ask your travel agent for a roundtrip airfare from your place to Buenos Aires, and also for the roundtrip domestic flight from Buenos Aires to San Carlos de Bariloche (BRC) or Chapelco (CPC).

You can expect temperatures of approximately 25 – 70 degrees (F), depending on the time of year.

Hunts are conducted on 4WD vehicles. Final approach is done on foot. Hunters may expect to stalk around 7- 8 miles per day and it implies light hiking on relatively flat terrain.

Every day you should see shootable game. Game is very abundant.

From the end of February up to the end of June for all deer species, except for the Pere David’s deer (which can only be hunted up to the end of May).

Every hunt is fully guided by our very experienced guides. Hunts are 1 x 1 and 2 x 1.

You will eat some deliciously prepared native home-style and international cooked meals in our dining room prepared by our exclusive chef. We can accommodate everything about any special health and dietary needs.

Predominantly Spanish, but you can ask for an interpreter (at an extra cost). The general manager and other employees speak English.

None whatsoever. You will be hunting in private property.

Some rain is to be expected since the weather is unpredictable; we recommend you bringing light rain gear. March and April are usually very dry, May and June get increasingly moist. However, given that the annual rainfall is 12 inches, not much rain can really be expected.

Yes. This will be arranged by the outfitter upon your arrival. Cost for the hunting license is USD 200 (could be changed by authorities without notice).

If you need shooting sticks, please bring the one of your preference. We stock a few but since there is such a wide array, we might not have the one you like.

There are no snakes where the ranch is located.

The country is also blessed with large numbers of wing game that inhabit its fields and farmlands.

The hunting season in Argentina lasts from the end of February till the end of June. Several species are legal to hunt for all year round. The wingshooting season is from May till August.

Looking For A Hunt in Argentina?

570-660-9465, argentina hunting trips and guides.

Are you looking for that Argentina hunt of a lifetime? At Infinity Hunts, we specialize in helping you find the type of hunt and experience you want. Through our extensive research and boots-on-the-ground approach, we work with the best Argentina guides and outfitters for all kinds of big game, wing shooting, and fishing adventures. Throughout your entire experience, we will be there for you – from choosing the perfect hunt with the right outfitter to personal support before, during, and after the hunt. So let us put our experience and proven outfitters to work for you on your adventure in Argentina!

Types of Hunts in Argentina

Argentina has the most developed hunting industry in South America and is known for world-class big game hunting, high-volume dove hunting, incredible waterfowl hunting, and great fishing. Red stag is probably the most popular big game species, but most hunters will also pursue other big game such as blackbuck, axis deer, fallow deer, water buffalo, mouflon sheep, multi-horn sheep, dall sheep, and wild boar.

Argentina also has some incredible wing-shooting opportunities. High-volume dove hunting will leave you with non-stop action. World-class duck hunting for many species and with generous bag limits abounds. And other wing-shooting species, such as pigeons and partridge, can give you some variety.

And for fun, you can often add a day or two of golden dorado fishing to a big game or wing shooting trip. For that matter, we can arrange big game and wing-shooting or fishing trips on the same journey with different outfitters, allowing you to experience all Argentina offers in one trip.

Where to Hunt in Argentina

Our big game and red stag hunts occur primarily in the La Pampa region, accessed with short flights from Buenos Aires. Here, you can hunt free-range red stag and several other big game species on large private ranches.

Our wing-shooting trips occur in the Entre Rios and Santa Fe regions, a short drive northwest of Buenos Aires. Here, we can hunt all wing-shooting species and a few big game species and conduct fishing trips for golden dorado.

Best Times to Hunt in Argentina

The Red Stag Roar takes place from early March through mid-April but can be hunted later in April and even May. Other big game species are hunted simultaneously, but we can sometimes add a few big game species when conducting wing shooting trips later in the year.

High-volume dove hunting can take place year-round. They typically fly all day, October through January, and fly good mornings and evenings the rest of the year.

Waterfowl hunting typically occurs from May through August, as does most of the hunting for partridge and pigeon.

Golden Dorado fishing is best from October through April, but still good the rest of the year, making a great cast and blast combo with dove hunting year-round.

Argentina Red Stag Outfitters and Hunts

Pursuing red stag hunting during the roar is a hunt you will remember. These hunts take place on premium free-range ranches with excellent trophies. These properties hold many red stag hinds and attract red stag bulls from miles around, resulting in intense roar action.

In addition to the red stag, these properties have blackbuck, fallow deer, axis deer, water buffalo, multi-horn rams, dall sheep, mouflon sheep, and wild boar.

Experienced guides with intimate knowledge of the ranch and all species’ habits will ensure a successful and enjoyable hunt. Most of the hunting is done by spot and stalk, accessing the ranch by 4×4 vehicle, then continuing on foot. Shots rarely exceed 300 yards with the rifle, and we have good ground blind and tree stand set-ups for bowhunters.

Lodging is first class with air-conditioned rooms, and the meals, which are chef-prepared, will be something to look forward to each evening.

Travel to camp is easy. You will fly to Buenos Aires and take a short flight to Santa Rosa, where the outfitter will meet you.

Argentina High-Volume Dove Hunts and Outfitters

Our high-volume dove hunts can take place year-round and are a short drive from Buenos Aires. We can handle small or large groups on these hunts, and there are no bag limits – you can shoot 500 to 1000 rounds a day or even more! Good shotguns are available, and you can purchase ammo in camp. Adding waterfowl, partridge, pigeon, big game hunting, and even fishing for golden dorado in the Entre Rios region is easy. You will experience excellent lodging and extraordinary cuisine on these trips.

Argentina Waterfowl Hunts and Outfitters

These hunts start in May and go through August in the Entre Rios and Santa Fe regions. Bag limits are unlike North America – you can shoot 100-175 rounds per day here! Rosy-billed pochard, leucistic speckled teal, fulvous whistlers, silver teal, black-headed, yellow-billed pintail, and several other species are available. We typically do both a morning and an afternoon shoot over productive marshes. We can handle small or large groups on these hunts. Adding doves, partridge, pigeons, big game hunting, and even fishing for golden dorado while waterfowl hunting is easy. You will experience excellent lodging and extraordinary cuisine on these trips.

Argentina Golden Dorado Fishing Guides and Outfitters

Golden dorado are known for their aggressive nature, jumps, and stamina, making them a great fish to pursue. We target these fish year-round with peak season from October to April. Fish will typically weigh 5-20 pounds. Three people per boat make a fun day with your friends on the water. It is easy to add doves, partridge, pigeons, and big game hunting to your fishing trip. You will experience excellent lodging and extraordinary cuisine on these trips.

We are constantly in the field seeking additional great outfitters and world-class hunts in Argentina. So, if you are looking for an excellent Argentina hunt and outfitter, please contact us so we can start putting together the perfect adventure for you.

About hunting in Argentina

Argentina is the most popular hunting destination in the world, attracting more than 20,000 foreign hunters every year. The vast majority are wingshooters, many of whom come for Argentina’s world-famous high-volume dove shooting. Doves are considered pests in this region; huge flocks come into agricultural fields in incredible numbers. However, Argentina is also an excellent destination for big-game hunters; it has some of the best free-range red stag hunting in the world. Cordoba Province is the most famous destination for high-volume dove shooting, but there are many other regions that have excellent wingshooting. Waterfowl and upland birds are plentiful in many areas and provide outstanding mixed-bag wingshooting. Most hunters choose either wingshooting or big-game hunting since they usually take place in different areas; however, combo hunts are possible. Red stags were originally introduced into Patagonia in the foothills of the Andes and La Pampa Province a hundred years ago. In addition to stags, other big game is available to hunt, including water buffalo, brocket deer, white-lipped peccary, and wild boar. Other animals have been introduced in some areas, including axis deer, blackbuck, fallow deer, feral goats and sheep, and mouflon. Pumas are also plentiful. Many lodges in Argentina are upscale, with excellent food and wine provided, and often a midday barbecue is served in the field. The country is filled with interesting culture and contrasts, including gauchos in traditional dress sitting in sheepskin-lined saddles, villagers driving horse-drawn carts, and locals passing around the traditional gourd of mate.

What you need to know

  • 1. Planning your trip
  • 2. Upon arrival
  • 4. After the hunt

Planning your trip

No visa is required for citizens of the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, or the European Union for stays of less than 90 days.

Importing Firearms

Increasing numbers of hunters now rent firearms for their Argentina hunts to avoid the hassle of bringing them, and many outfitters are equipped with excellent guns to rent—but be sure to check with your outfitter first if you wish to go this route.

Gun-import requirements for Argentina have been in flux in recent years, which has caused some confusion for visiting hunters. Visitors who want to import breech loading shotguns or rifles can do so by having their application filled out before hand with the help of their outfitter and then apply for the import permit upon arrival. If you want to import a semi-automatic gun you need to do so by applying for a temporary import permit at the nearest Argentine Consulate, which must be done in person. Check with your outfitter in advance of your trip for the most up-to-date requirements. You will definitely need to fill out the required forms for RENAR (Registro Nacional de Armas) in advance of your trip; you should be able to get these forms from your outfitter. If you can make your port of entry Cordoba as many hunters report entering Cordoba with guns is much less time consuming than Buenos Aires.

Upon arrival

Buenos Aires, where many hunters arrive, has two airports: Ezeisa Airport (EZE) is where many international flights arrive. Many domestic flights leave from Newbery Airport (AEP), which is across town. It can take as much as two hours to go from one to the other, so if you are connecting, it’s important to allow plenty of time.

It’s a good idea to arrange for someone to meet you at the airport to assist with rifle importation, especially if you don’t speak Spanish. You will collect your luggage and take your guns to the RENAR office, where your paperwork will be processed. Then you will have to go through Argentine customs, where a second round of paperwork is required. The process is time-consuming.

It’s important to keep your RENAR papers and passport with you at all times while you are hunting in case you are stopped by a routine police check.

Argentina’s winter climate is mostly mild during hunting season. Rain gear is always a must, as are waterproof boots. If you are wingshooting, prepare for shooting many, many rounds; a jacket or vest with a recoil pad is a good idea, and shooting gloves are a must. Many outfitters recommend semiautomatic shotguns as they have less recoil; either 12- or 20-gauge guns are fine. For wingshooting, you will purchase shells from your outfitter and be charged for those you use at the end of the trip. Big-game hunting areas vary in terms of terrain and difficulty, so consult with your outfitter for a recommended gear list.

After the hunt

It’s important to note that most species native to Argentina, such as puma, peccary, and brocket deer, can be legally hunted in many provinces but cannot be exported. Introduced species such as red stag can be exported with the proper permits. When your hunt is completed, your outfitter can arrange to have your trophies shipped to a taxidermist to prepare them for shipping and export.

Dos Plumas Dove Hunting Lodge

Dos Plumas lodge is located in province of San Luis which borders more recognized Cordoba to the north and Mendoza to the west. The lodge is aptly named as this translates directly to “two feathers”, meaning we hunt both pigeons and doves in the area.

San Luis lies at the base of the Sierra Grande, with a diverse landscape and temperate climate. The varied geography of the land allows for a great mix of farming, while maintaining boundless roosting areas for dove and pigeon. Of course where there is agriculture, mild climates, and ample roosting grounds in Argentina, there are dove and pigeons by the millions. We are privileged to have exclusive hunting rights in the area which allows us the ability to offer the best pigeon hunting in Argentina without competition as well as engage in land management and bag limit practices to ensure a thriving population for many years.

Historically we have used a private hotel as the base of our dove and pigeon hunting in San Luis, but we are pleased to offer our brand new lodge Dos Plumas which hosted the first group of hunters in April 2015. The lodge itself rests at the base of the mountains offering spectacular views of the slopes from behind and vast agricultural lands in the front. Unlike most hunting lodges in Argentina, Dos Plumas was built specifically as a hunting lodge and to comfortably host up to 10 guests in 5 spacious bedrooms. While the lodge is built to modern standards, it maintains the typical Argentine look and feel.

Ramiro del las Carreras is our outfitter in this area. With a master’s degree in agriculture and a passion for hunting Ramiro began his hunting operation in San Luis more than 12 years ago. In this time Ramiro has had the opportunity to host thousands of happy dove and pigeon hunters.

The lodge is located in the north of San Luis province which allows for two options to travel to the lodge. There are daily flights from Santiago to Mendoza which is and then 3 hour 30 minute drive to the lodge. Travelers that select this itinerary often chose wine tour at the beginning or end of their trip. The other option is through Buenos Aires which offers daily flights from the domestic airport to San Luis, and then you are 80 minutes from the lodge.

Because the proximity to Mendoza, luxury of the lodge and high level of service this lodge is very appealing to our non-shooting guests.

  • Argentina pigeon hunting with liberal limits
  • Unlimited dove shooting
  • Wine Tours in Mendoza
  • Multiple travel options to arrive at lodge
  • Short drives to field
  • Local Wines, liquor and beer
  • High Speed Wireless internet
  • Satellite TV

Allow us to host you at Dos Plumas for the best dove and pigeon hunting in Argentina!

Hunting Knife Sets: Hands-On And Tested

Hunting Knife Sets: Hands-On And Tested

The latest hunting knife combos will exalt your outdoor experience.

When choosing a hunting set of cutting tools, consider the quality of the tools and how they complement each other. Before you do that, though, be sure the set is properly outfitted.

A good set should include a gut hook, knife, saw and small hatchet for field dressing and processing game. Each tool serves a specific purpose:

  • Gut hook: makes opening the animal’s abdomen easier,
  • Sharp knife: essential for skinning and butchering
  • Saw: helps cut through bone or branches
  • Small hatchet: helps split bone or cut wood.

Consider durability and ease of use, as well as how the tools can be packed for transport.

Gut Hook Knives

A gut hook hunting knife serves multiple purposes in the field. Its primary function is to assist in the field dressing process by opening the animal’s abdomen with minimal damage to the internal organs. The hook feature helps prevent puncturing the organs while skinning and reduces the risk of cutting into the stomach or intestines. A gut hook can be used for cutting through tough connective tissues, tendons and cartilage, too. Its precision and specialized design make it an essential tool for hunters, allowing for efficient and safe processing of game in the field. It also works great for hooking under a bail and lifting hot pots and other items off a camp stove, etc.

Caping Knives

A caping knife in a hunting set serves various purposes, making it an essential tool for hunters. Its precision and maneuverability render it ideal for delicate tasks such as skinning around trophy areas, making intricate cuts, and separating hide from the meat. Also known as a caper, it is great for creating shoulder mounts or European mounts of game animals, preserving the hide for taxidermy purposes. The fine point and sharp blade allow for detailed, careful work without damaging the hide or underlying tissue. A caper is a versatile tool that adds value to any hunting tool set, especially for hunters looking to preserve trophies.

Boker Arbolito Guides Combo

Boker 2.25-inch drop point and Diamond Blade Knives Pinnacle

The Boker Arbolito Manufactory in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is known for crafting high-quality knives using premium materials, with an emphasis on hunting and outdoor models featuring handles of wood and stag. These traditional knives are designed to cater to a variety of needs and tasks, whether for professional use, sports, everyday carry or collectors with a keen interest.

A notable offering is the Arbolito Guides Combo set in satin blades and stag handles. It includes a 4.25-inch gut hook skinning blade and a 2.25-inch drop point hunter. The gut hook prevents accidental punctures during skinning and is designed with a large forward finger choil for enhanced control. The little drop point is suitable for small, detailed cutting tasks, providing precision cuts. It is an excellent utility blade for cutting cord, fishing line and packaging, and it can act as a small skinner. Both knives sport stag handles for a secure grip and a rustic appearance.

The set includes a brown leather piggyback belt sheath for easy carry. The gut hook pouch boasts a solid snap to ensure retention. The small drop point comes with a simple drop-in friction-fit pouch, which is easy to access and is held on the main sheath via a rivet. This set presents function and style for processing your next trophy animal or other outdoor tasks.

Arbolito Guides Combo Set Specs Blade Lengths: Gut hook skinner 4.25”, drop point 2.25” Blade Steel: Bohler N695 stainless Blade Grinds: Skinner hollow, drop point flat Blades @ Thickest: .125” Blade Finish: Satin Handle Material: White/brown stag Overall Lengths: Skinner 8.6”, drop point 4.8” Sheath: Leather piggyback Country of Origin: Argentina MSRP: $291 at press-time exchange rate

Knives of Alaska Caribou Combo

KOA Caribou Combo work well together

The Knives of Alaska Caribou Combo offers a slimmer alternative to the company’s Light Hunter Combo. The Caribou Combo features the same gut hook skinner design as the Light Hunter Combo but with a thinner blade for a sharper, longer-lasting cutting edge. The Caribou is ideal for those seeking a complete field dressing kit for whitetail deer and other medium-sized game.

The Caribou Combo includes two knives—a gut hook skinner and Cub Bear—in a side-by-side sheath. The skinner is a full-tang knife 7.5 inches overall. It has a .1-inch-thick D2 tool steel blade and a 4.25-inch cutting edge. It features thumb notches and a large-capacity gut hook.

The Cub Bear is a fine-detail-work knife of D2 with a blade 3/32 inch thick at the thickest. Both models feature black SureGrip handles with large, lined lanyard holes. For hunting deer, sheep and mountain goats, the Caribou Combo is an excellent choice.

The two knives work perfectly together. The skinner has a deep belly for slicing and enough weight to be a light cleaver. Besides the obvious skinning qualities and gut hook that opens the abdomen safely, it’s an excellent butcher knife. Using it to slice and chop up meat chunks for a rustic, slow-cooked meal was a breeze. The Cub Bear, meanwhile, is a tremendous caper that pulls triple duty as a fine carver and paring knife.

In my humble opinion, of the test group this set was by far the best buy for the money.

Caribou Combo Specs Blade Lengths: Gut hook skinner 3.5”, Cub Bear 2.75” Blade Material: D2 tool steel Blade Grind: Saber Blades @ Thickest: Skinner .1”, Cub Bear .09” Blade Finish: Bead blast Handle Material: Black SureGrip Overall Lengths: Skinner 7.5”, Cub Bear 6.75” Sheath: Brown leather double pouch Country of Origin: USA MSRP: $189.99

Diamond Blade Knives Summit Combo

Summit has a long skinning radius, making it proficient at swiftly and effectively breaking down game. A scalpel-like knife, the Pinnacle II is ideal for caping and initial incisions

The Summit Combo from Diamond Blade Knives is a pro hunter’s set meticulously crafted with the benefit of decades of hunting and field dressing expertise. It includes the Summit drop point and the Pinnacle II, both highly efficient field tools.

The Summit has a long skinning radius, making it the perfect tool for swiftly and effectively breaking down game. A scalpel-like knife, the Pinnacle II is ideal for caping and initial incisions, sporting finger gimping and cutouts for optimal leverage.

Designed for professional hunters, this versatile kit provides reliable and efficient tools for most aspects of field dressing. The set includes an American-made dual leather sheath with a Kydex insert for secure retention and easy access while preventing damage to the knives.

The substantial Summit proved ideal for effortlessly carving meat for a hearty stew or canning. The large handle gave ample space for various grips or when wearing gloves. The Pinnacle II did an excellent job on small detailed work, especially slicing herbs and peeling garlic.

The double sheath was my favorite of the test bunch because it held the knives perfectly in place, even with the snaps open, due to the Kydex insert. The attractive outer leather provides the best of both worlds.

Knives Summit Combo Specs Blade Lengths: Pinnacle II Scalpel 2.55”, Summit Drop Point 3.75” Blade Material: Friction Forged® D2 tool steel Blade Grind: Flat Blades @ Thickest: Pinnacle II Scalpel .09”, Summit Drop Point .125” Blade Finish: Satin Handle Material: Stag Overall Lengths: Pinnacle II Scalpel 7”, Summit Drop Point 8.75” Sheath: Leather double model w/Kydex insert Country of Origin: USA MSRP: $799

TOPS Knives Muley Skinner/Saw Combo

TOPS Knives Muley Skinner

Winner of Best Hunting Knife at BLADE Show West 2023, the TOPS Knives Muley Skinner/Saw Combo is a game changer. The Muley Skinner is a solid fixed blade for outdoor jobs. The long, deep-bellied blade is well-suited for skinning game and performing campsite tasks such as prepping, kindling and food processing. The Muley Saw is a bone saw tailored for efficient game processing and can serve as a wood saw in emergencies. The saw blade sports a razor-sharp gut hook for added function.

Due to in no small part to its flat grind, the skinner excelled at slicing meat. It also deboned chicken thighs, as the belly fit nicely between the joints while roll cutting. The robust build instills confidence for using the knife for baton cuts. The saw was aggressive and did equally well on bone as on branches. It was the most diverse tool of all those in the test sets.

Muley Combo Specs Designer: Leo Espinoza Blade Lengths: Skinner 4.5”, Saw 4.25” Blade Steel: 154CM stainless Rockwell Hardness: 58-60 HRC, cryo-treated Blade Grind: Flat Blades @ Thickest: .13” Blade Finish: Tumble Handle Material: Tan/Black G-10 w/orange G-10 liners Overall Lengths: Skinner 8.75”, Saw 9” Sheath: Brown leather double model Knife to know: Winner of Best Hunting Knife at BLADE Show West 2023 Country of Origin: USA MSRP: $550

The reviewed sets ensure you have everything you need for field dressing and processing game efficiently. A good hunting knife set can make the process quicker and more manageable, especially when dealing with larger game. Lastly, having a set of dedicated hunting tools helps preserve the sharpness and integrity of your everyday carry knife, as it won’t be subjected to the same level of wear and tear that field dressing often involves.
