Shawn Mendes Announces His Return to the Stage and a New Album Nearly 2 Years After Canceling Tour
The singer took to Instagram on Thursday to announced the big news.
Shawn Mendes is stepping back into the spotlight and embracing his return to the stage.
The 25-year-old singer took to Instagram on Thursday to share the exciting news that he's got his comeback all lined up -- first with a headline festival performance and then some brand-new music.
"It's been a really long time since i last played live and I'm so excited to share that I'll be headlining Rock In Rio on Sept 22nd," Mendes wrote in the caption to a black-and-white snapshot of himself shirtless, strumming a guitar. "I've missed being on stage and seeing you all in person so much!"
The singer added, "I've also been working on a new album and i can't wait to play these new songs live for you. See you there. eu te amo!!!!"
The announcement comes just a few days after Mendes made a brief return to the stage for a surprise performance with Niall Horan in London.
Horan, 30, was playing a stop on The Show: Live on Tour, and shocked fans when he called on the "Stitches" artist to join him.
"Welcome to the stage, my little big brother, Shawn Mendes," Horan declared as the audience went absolutely wild over the unexpected guest.
Together, the pair performed a duet rendition of Mendes' hit single "Treat You Better," and Horan celebrated the appearance with a hearty "That’s my boy!" as Mendes exited after the number.
The news of Mendes headlining Rock in Rio comes nearly two years after he canceled his planned world tour in 2022 to focus on his mental health and wellbeing.
Back in January, he took to Instagram to share reflections on his personal growth over the past year.
The "Wonder" singer posted a video of himself singing along to a harmonium and expressed how this practice helped him cope with anxiety and fear. Mendes revealed that allowing himself to sing without the need for perfection became a source of comfort, emphasizing the beauty in the interplay between "right" and "wrong" notes.
"I realized there were only moments of bliss and euphoria from the 'right' notes BECAUSE of the 'wrong' notes," he wrote on Instagram at the time. "The only reason I can sing in key is because I've learned to listen."
Mendes also shared that his most significant lesson in 2023 was "to accept and welcome the lows of life" and not constantly seek change to regain a sense of high.

Shawn Mendes’ world tour is officially canceled after the singer conceded he was not ready to hit the road after the long, COVID-19 pandemic-induced hiatus.
Mendes had previously postponed a “few weeks of shows,” citing a need for a mental break. Wednesday morning, however, he said he needed more time and would have to cancel the rest of the tour.
Shawn Mendes cancels tour dates to prioritize ‘my mental health, first and foremost’
The stress of a world tour has gotten to Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes, who announced he is taking a break to focus on his mental health.
July 9, 2022
“As you guys know, I had to postpone the past few weeks of shows since I wasn’t totally prepared for the toll that being on the road would take on me,” Mendes wrote on his social media accounts. “I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away.
“After speaking more with my team and working with an incredible group of health professionals, it has become more clear that I need to take the time I’ve never taken personally to ground myself and come back stronger,” he continued. “I unfortunately have to cancel the rest of the tour dates in North America, and the UK/Europe. We were hopeful that I might be able to pick up with the rest of the dates after some much needed time off, but at this time I have to put my health as my first priority.”

The Canadian singer-songwriter’s “Wonder: The World” tour kicked off June 27 in Portland, Ore., and was set for Los Angeles on Sept. 9-10. However, on July 8 he posted that he would be taking a three-week break, which ended up preceding the cancellation of the entire tour.
“This doesn’t mean I won’t be making new music, and I can’t wait to see you on tour in the future,” he concluded. “I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I’ve taken the right time to heal. I love you and thank you all so much for supporting me and sticking by me on this journey.”

Shawn Mendes Says Canceling Tour Was 'Very Difficult' — but His Healing Process Has Been 'Eye-Opening'
The "Wonder" singer pulled the plug on his world tour in July in order to focus on his mental health
Shawn Mendes is opening up about the "very difficult," but ultimately rewarding, process of canceling his tour dates in order to tend to his mental health struggles.
The "Wonder" singer, 24, told the WSJ. Magazine that pulling the plug on his Wonder: The World Tour in July was tricky, but was something spurred on by time spent in therapy trying to unpack all that he was dealing with.
"The process was very difficult. A lot of doing therapy, a lot of trying to understand how I was feeling and what was making me feel that way. And then doing the work to help myself and heal," he told the outlet. "And also leaning on people in my life to help a little bit."
Mendes said it's "been a lot of work" making efforts to untangle his feelings, but that he feels as though the process is working, and is appreciative of the support he's received.
"I think the last year and a half has been the most eye-opening and growing and beautiful and just healing process of my life," he said. "I'm also really grateful for all the people that were so accepting and loving and kind and understanding. And it just really made me see how culture is really starting to get to a place where mental health is really becoming a priority."

The star first postponed his tour in July, then canceled the dates altogether weeks later. He'd kicked things off that June, and was slated to play more than 40 shows through October.
In a statement shared with fans at the time, Mendes said he was making his health his "first priority," and needed a longer break from the road after facing the difficult reality of extensive touring.
"It has become more clear that I need to take the time I've never taken personally, to ground myself and come back stronger. I unfortunately have to cancel the rest of the tour dates in North America, and the UK/Europe," he wrote. "We were hopeful that I might be able to pick up with the rest of the dates after some much-needed time off, but at this time I have to put my health as my first priority. This doesn't mean I won't be making new music, and I can't wait to see you on tour in the future."
The Grammy-nominated star continued: "I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I've taken the right time to heal. I love you all and thank you all so much for supporting me and sticking by me on this journey."
In the months since announcing his break, Mendes has shown off his acting chops (he played the titular reptile in Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile , which was released in October) as well as a brand new 'do ; in January, he debuted a buzz cut.
"I think everyone should know what they look like with a shaved head," Mendes told the WSJ of bidding adieu to his signature long locks. "I also was just feeling this urge to just shake myself up a little bit."
The star was also recently named the new brand ambassador for jeweler David Yurman.
"I find that David Yurman jewelry has this super organic feel to it where you can feel dressed up and still feel authentic," he told PEOPLE. "That's why I've always worn these pieces on my neck because it's always been special but also subtle enough for me to feel comfortable in my own skin. It feels easy and effortless — you don't have to put on a character to wear this jewelry. You're elevating yourself in a comfortable way."

Shawn Mendes Announces Return to Stage After Canceling Tour to Prioritize Mental Health
Shawn mendes announced he will be headlining rock in rio in september after a two-year hiatus from the stage for his mental health..
There's nothing holding Shawn Mendes back now.
In fact, the "Treat You Better" singer shared that after a two year break from performing to focus on his mental health he will be returning to the stage.
"It's been a really long time since I last played live and I'm so excited to share that I'll be headlining Rock In Rio on Sept 22," Shawn wrote in a March 7 Instagram post . "I've missed being on stage and seeing you all in person so much!"
And the 25-year-old—who last released his last album Wonder in 2020 and has dropped a few singles in the interim—also teased the gig would involve new music.
"I've also been working on a new album and I can't wait to play these new songs live for you," he added. "See you there. Eu te amo!!!!"
So far, the Rock In Rio line up also includes stars like Ed Sheeran , Katy Perry , Travis Scott and One Republic . And while his return to stage is exciting—this is not Shawn's first time performing at the festival, as he also had a 2017 slot in the Brazil-based concert series.
Still, fans of the "Stitches" singer, who said in January he's working on accepting the "highs and lows of life" concerning his mental health, will be delighted to hear this news after a relatively quiet few years for him. In 2022, Shawn canceled the remainder of his Wonder World Tour due to the stress of post-pandemic touring life.
"I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away," the 25-year-old wrote in a statement at the time . "I promise I will be back as soon as I take the right time to heal."

Shawn Mendes Makes Surprise Live Return at Ed Sheeran Concert
By Daniel Kreps
Daniel Kreps
Nearly a year after canceling his world tour to focus on his mental health, Shawn Mendes made a surprise return to the stage Saturday at Ed Sheeran ‘s Toronto concert.
During Sheeran’s performance of “Lego House” at the Rogers Centre in Mendes’ native Toronto, he welcomed the Canadian singer, acoustic guitar in hand, onto the rotating stage.
Mendes then hung around to perform an acoustic rendition of his own “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” alongside Sheeran.
This wasn’t the first time the two hitmakers shared an arena stage: Back in 2017, Sheeran popped up during Mendes’ show in Brooklyn to play “Mercy” together.
Saturday night’s cameo was significant for Mendes however, as it marked the first time in nearly a year that the singer has appeared onstage. In July 2022, Mendes postponed and then canceled the entirety of his Wonder World Tour to focus on his mental health.

The singer noted that despite starting “this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic,” he was not “at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away.” The statement mirrors a similar one he made back in July when the “In My Blood” singer announced he was postponing the first three weeks of the tour.
The statement also suggests that Mendes is “hopeful” he will be able to pick up tour dates after this mental health pause, but that ultimately right now he’s focused on putting “my health first as my priority.”
“This doesn’t mean I won’t be making new music , and I can’t wait to see you on tour in the future,” Mendes added. “I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I’ve taken the right time to heal.”

Mendes, who has been touring since he was 15, released Wonder — his latest and fourth studio album — in December 2020. The world tour was expected to kick off last month and run through October ahead of its European leg, which was slated to launch in May 2023.
The singer-songwriter has been open about his mental health in the past. Most recently that was in the form of a letter to fans posted to his social media in April, in which he states that during his low points, “I either put on a show or hide” and that amid his own success, he still struggles to not feel like he’s “failing.”
“The truth is that I’m overwhelmed and overstimulated,” he concluded. “The truth is also that I’m okay. I’m just tryna tell and be the truth.”

The singer was due to appear at a number of venues across the UK in July and August next year - but now all the dates have been cancelled.

Shawn Mendes has cancelled the rest of his world tour in the UK, North America and Europe to prioritise his health, the singer has announced.
Breaking the news to his 69.7 million followers on Instagram, the 23-year-old said he was "not at all ready for how difficult touring would be" after his long break due to the COVID pandemic.
"After speaking more with my team and working with an incredible group of health professionals, it has become more clear that I need to take the time I've never taken personally to ground myself and come back stronger," he said.
It comes after the Treat You Better singer announced he was postponing a number of shows in order to take care of himself and his mental health.
Mendes had more than 80 shows planned for across the US, UK and Europe.
"We were hopeful that I might be able to pick up with the rest of the dates after some much-needed time off, but at this time I have to put my health as my first priority," the Grammy-winner's statement continued.
Despite cancelling his tour, Mendes added that it "doesn't mean" he will not be making new music and thanked his fans for sticking by him.

Shawn Mendes Dazzles at 2022 Tour Kickoff in Portland: Photos, Review and Setlist

The post Shawn Mendes Dazzles at 2022 Tour Kickoff in Portland: Photos, Review and Setlist appeared first on Consequence .
If you listened to Shawn Mendes without knowing anything about him, it may not surprise you at all to learn that his music connects with people enough that they’ll wait however long it takes to scream those songs in the biggest venue they can access. Why wouldn’t people turn out in droves for his brand of poppy, often-intimate, singer-songwriter rock almost designed to be heard in spaces as big as Moda Center, where he kicked off his “Wonder: The World Tour” in Portland on Monday night (June 27th)?
“I can’t tell you how good it feels to be here right now,” Mendes said three songs in. It’s hard to blame him; his last album, Wonder , is about a year-and-a-half old, yet another painful casualty of the Covid era’s impact on the live music industry.
Since October of ‘19, Mendes has played a handful of livestreams and small performances at festivals, but Monday’s performance, which stretched close to two hours long, was the first chance he’s had to really stretch his legs and play a real, fleshed-out show since the beginning of the pandemic. No wonder he’s excited to be back.

As such, both Mendes and the crowd seemed borderline ravenous — his performance felt cathartic, and the crowd (which was packed for a Monday evening show) never strayed from an opportunity to scream-sing their heads off (even for the more stripped-back, acoustic-guitar-or-a-piano songs). In that way, it almost feels like a gift that this tour has been so long delayed — the symbiotic relationship between the performer and the crowd becomes almost too big to fail when the anticipation levels build beyond a certain point. As it turns out, a year and a half is that point.
And Mendes ate it up so visibly that it was hard not to be charmed by it all. At one point, after walking to the end of the long catwalk that extended into the audience, he could be seen taking out his in-ear monitors, just so that he could hear the legitimately impressive roar of the Moda Center crowd. His smile in that moment was tiny enough that it would be easy to miss it if you weren’t paying attention, but it spoke to something deeper than just joy over being adored — it felt like he was finally rid of a dull ache that had been plaguing him for far too long.
Outwardly, his performance felt like a celebration; he kicked, he danced, he thrust his finger and guitar neck skyward. Halfway through, he giddily put on a cowboy hat that had been thrown onstage, wore it for a song, then tossed it back into a borderline-feral audience one song later, his inability to contain his own elation at being onstage again making him an uncontainable force of energy.
This translated wonderfully into the performance only showing minimal signs of rustiness within Mendes; the 23-year-old phenom is a remarkably adept performer, able to command basketball arenas with only an acoustic guitar and his songbird-like singing voice. One of the really great things about tours that happen months or even years after an album’s release is that the new material gets people as excited as the old hits, and this show was no exception. The audience went wild for every single song that was played — piano ballad “Look Up at the Stars” from Wonder and “Why” from his self-titled debut included.
Still, that isn’t to say there was no rust at all. Part of the problem comes down to the flow of the evening’s setlist; though the first hour of the performance was careful to maintain its peaks ( Illuminate’s “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back”) and valleys (“Look Up at the Stars,” the Justin Bieber co-written “Monster”), the problem began when Mendes slowed things down to play at the end of the catwalk.
First stripping back to him and two of the guitarists in his backing band, then to just himself, a five-song roadblock was dropped into the center of the evening. It never felt like the momentum returned, with several songs feeling like natural conclusion points, but failing to actually be the end. On top of that, they threw in a cover of The Police’s classic “Message in a Bottle,” which felt like a self-indulgent attempt at feeling like an actual rockstar, but without the superhuman bravado to pull it off.
But the biggest issue was the stage setup. While it was beautiful to see such crisp LEDs utilized, and the massive ring of lights that hung over the stage was pretty to look at, each element felt severely underused. The most that ring of lights did was lower and raise, and at times, it felt closer to an arena-sized loading symbol, as though the real setup had simply not finished rendering. Simple beauty only goes so far, and with Mendes firmly in the category of “arena performer,” all we can hope for is that his stage setups become tighter as his years as a performer go on.
Those nitpicks were never truly visible to most of the audience, though, who clung on until the end of the night. The crowd got to see Mendes, confidently pulling out all the stops in his quest to dazzle absolutely everyone in the room. After the end of the set, he returned to the stage for a one-song encore of “In My Blood” by being raised on a hydraulic platform from underneath the end of the stage’s catwalk, which he played until returning to the main stage to play guitar as confetti rained down from the ceiling.
Even with those lows, it felt like the whole of Moda Center — including Mendes — were united in celebrating the ability to see concerts as big as this one again. It’s not just where Mendes belongs; it’s where we all belong.
Shawn Mendes’ next tour stop is Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena tonight (June 28th). Tickets for all remaining dates are available via Ticketmaster .

Did Shawn Mendes cancel his Wonder tour?
The Mendes Army will have to hold out a little longer to see Shawn on tour. On July 27, 2022, the 23-year-old Toronto native penned a message to fans on Instagram, where he announced the upcoming North American leg has been canceled. "As you guys know, I had to postpone the past few weeks of shows since I wasn't totally prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take on me," he wrote, "I started this tour excited to finally get back to playing live after a long break due to the pandemic, but the reality is I was not at all ready for how difficult touring would be after this time away."
He reassured fans that although he isn't touring right now, he is still working on new music and plans to release it sometime soon. "I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I promise I will be back as soon as I've taken the right time to heal," Shawn said.
The announcement comes after Shawn postponed the North American leg of the tour due to his mental health on July 9, 2022. He shared a statement on Instagram with his fans and confirmed that the remainder of the U.S. leg was going to carry on at a later date. "I've been touring since I was 15 and to be honest it's always been difficult to be on the road away from friends and family," Shawn wrote before admitting that his decision to hit the road was "premature" and that he's "hit a breaking point" due to the pressures of touring. As a result, he postponed three weeks of shows to take some time to heal.

Is Shawn making any sustainability efforts for Wonder: The World Tour?
Yes! His tour is actually changing the game when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint (more on that here ). In a statement released on April 29, Shawn revealed that he and his team are doing their part in taking specific measures to ensure the tour is sustainable. According to a report by Billboard , his tour will reduce its per-show carbon footprint "by implementing simple but effective practices that can be done by both fans and tour crew."
"No plan is perfect, but we see this as a starting point," Shawn said in his statement. "We are in a pivotal moment for climate, and it's crucial to me that this tour is a step in the right direction."
The tour has a goal to reduce emissions and in order to do so, they're offering merchandise with sustainable fabrics and fewer dyes and using energy-efficient lighting and power for the show. When traveling from show to show, the crew's opting for sustainable fuel options and will also be eating food that's sourced from local farms. Any extra food will be composted or donated to the appropriate organizations.
The tour's official website also offers resources for fans so they can carpool or use sustainable transportation to shows.

the experience was so magical and incredible, i wait him for like 4 years and when i saw him i couldn´t avoid to cry becuase i though it wasn't true. He is so nice, kind and the sweetest guy in the world. His passion for singing in front of a lot of people is so admirable, i really love his voice and how he interact with his fans like singing with them or go down and the end of the show for meet some of them and feel that connection between them. I really enjoy every song as long as I tore my throat singing with all my heart, the part of I was waiting the most was Bad reputation because of the rock sensation and power at that moment and in Never be alone was really magical, i've never though i was gonna be part of those lights in the show. At the end with In my blood y realize that it was done, that the show has over and I couldn´t believe it because it pass so fast. Everything was magical and passionate and I´m so thankful with Shawn for coming to my country and make my dream came true. I love him so much.

Shawn Mendes’ show was the best show in my life
It started with Alessia Cara performance. It was awesome, she sings really well and she has a really great presence in the stage I got really emotional and cried a lot during her performance.
Then Shawn Mendes started he really sings very well. He gave a short speech about every single person is important and even when we hit the rock bottom we are important and we have the power to change the wrold.
The visuals of the show were amazing and beautiful
The crowd was really loud we sang from the top of our lungs and everyone(including me) knew every single word of every single song the both sang
I don’t have words to describe the show... I cried a lot... I laughed a lot... I had lots of fun.... and I smiled a lot..... it was magical both Alessia’s and Shawn’s performance. I was really glad that he brought her(btw she is one of my favorite singers as Shawn is)
It was a really nice, emocional and a great concert
I will never forget this moment
