But despite the drive from Quito to Cotopaxi being relatively quick, it can be challenging to figure out the best way to visit the volcano and Cotopaxi National Park.

Quito to Cotopaxi

A visit to Cotopaxi National Park is a great day trip from Quito, and one of the best for most travelers. One of the most breathtaking volcanoes in South America , Cotopaxi should not be missed!

Traveling from Quito to Cotopaxi is easy, as the drive is generally under 2 hours. You’ll be close enough that you won’t overextend yourself with travel, and have the opportunity to enjoy one of Ecuador’s most stunning landmarks, and among the most impressive volcanoes in Ecuador .

If you have at least one night to spend overnight, even better. There is a lot to do in the park, and it can be a base for multiple excursions or activities.

How Far is Cotopaxi from Quito?

How do i get to cotopaxi from quito.

There are four primary ways to get to Cotopaxi from Quito:

  • Take a public bus to Cotopaxi National Park.
  • Take the shuttle from The Secret Garden Quito to The Secret Garden Cotopaxi .
  • Book a group tour to Cotopaxi from Quito .
  • Book a private tour to Cotopaxi from Quito .

While a viable option, taking public transportation to Cotopaxi can be challenging , and you’ll still need to obtain and pay for transportation from a local guide once arriving in the park.

For most visitors, booking a small group day trip , private day trip , or taking the Quito-Cotopaxi shuttle to The Secret Garden Cotopaxi for an overnight is the best option.

Quito to Cotopaxi Bus

If you’re looking to visit Cotopaxi by bus, you’ll start at the Quitumbe bus terminal in the south of Quito . Once at the terminal, you can select any bus headed south to Latacunga .

Tickets cost around $2 USD , and you should have no trouble finding buses headed here – they’re offered by a variety of bus companies and leave frequently.

You’ll pass the entrance to the park on the Pan-American Highway – you’ll need to tell the bus driver that you want to get off at Cotopaxi National Park , at the “Control Caspi” entrance. The bus driver will leave you at the entrance to the park along the highway.

Remember, you can’t truly explore this massive park on foot – you’ll need some form of transport , as it will take you nearly one hour just to walk from the highway to the official park entrance.

Local guides wait at the junction of the Pan-American Highway and the road to the entrance of the park, and you can usually negotiate a tour with them for around $20-30 for a few hours in the park.

However, you never quite know what you’re going to get, especially if it is your first time, and once you’re here you’re pretty much stuck paying what the local guides ask.

That’s why I generally recommend scheduling a guided day trip to Cotopaxi from Quito , or booking an overnight at The Secret Garden Cotopaxi .

The Secret Garden Cotopaxi

One of the best ways to visit Cotopaxi is by visiting The Secret Garden Cotopaxi . This special hotel located within the National Park feels like a total retreat, and offers so much value to visitors .

They offer free daily waterfall hikes in Cotopaxi National Park, delicious food (all included in the price of your stay), and organize low-cost, high-quality activities.

The Secret Garden also offers a daily shuttle between their hostel in Quito and Cotopaxi National Park , which is a fantastic option if you’re looking to visit – even if you don’t plan on staying here.

Quito Shuttle

The Secret Garden Cotopaxi offers a daily shuttle (a 12-person passenger van) from Quito to their hotel within Cotopaxi National Park. Taking the shuttle is a fantastic option for those who are looking to get from Quito to Cotopaxi National Park but want to avoid a public bus.

The shuttle departs at 10:00 AM every day from The Secret Garden Quito hostel in the Quito Historic Center .

It costs $10 USD per person from Quito to The Secret Garden Cotopaxi, or $5 USD from Machachi (near the entrance to the park) onward to The Secret Garden Cotopaxi at around 11:00 AM.

You can take the shuttle even if you don’t plan on staying at The Secret Garden! You can get off the shuttle at Machachi – near one of the entrances to Cotopaxi National Park – and arrange with a local guide or cab to explore the park on your own, if you’d like.

The benefit of taking the shuttle over taking public transportation is that you won’t have to take a cab or bus to Quito’s southern bus terminal Quitumbe, and you’ll travel much more comfortably.

It is a great, low-cost transportation option if you don’t want to book a small group tour (though this is still the best way to visit Cotopaxi in one day).

Stay at The Secret Garden Cotopaxi

If your itinerary allows, I highly recommend spending one night at The Secret Garden Cotopaxi and arranging an excursion in the park through the hotel!

Your experience in Cotopaxi National Park will be so much richer than it would be in just a day trip and Cotopaxi tour, and this hotel is truly something special.

Taking the shuttle from Quito to arrive, and the return shuttle the next day , makes transportation here inexpensive and easy for an unforgettable overnight and experience in Cotopaxi.

Ruling out traveling by public transportation – you’ll need to hire local transport and a guide to enter the park, anyways! – and if your itinerary doesn’t allow for an overnight at The Secret Garden Cotopaxi , choosing a guided excursion from Quito is absolutely the best way to visit Cotopaxi National Park.

Most small group and private tours to Cotopaxi National Park involve a similar itinerary covering the best of the park.

You can expect a pickup from your hotel or at a meeting point in Quito, private transport to the park, hiking through sections of the park and (sometimes) up to the Jose Rivas Refuge near the volcano’s glacier line, and lunch and snacks along the way.

Small Group Excursion from Quito

Choosing a small group Cotopaxi day trip from Quito is the best option for most travelers looking to visit Cotopaxi in one day. You’ll have the opportunity to see the best of Cotopaxi National Park and spend the most time here.

The specific excursion that I love to recommend – this Cotopaxi Full-Day Small Group Tour from Quito – includes hiking in the park near the beautiful Laguna de Limpiopungo (Lake Limpiopungo) and the opportunity to hike to the refuge near the glacier line.

Where to Stay in Cotopaxi National Park

There are relatively few options for lodging within and around Cotopaxi National Park. Many visitors choose to do day tours from Quito or even Latacunga, so there aren’t many places to stay nearby. However, those who choose to stay at least one night in the park are in for a real treat.

  • The Secret Garden Cotopaxi ($ – $$)
  • Hacienda El Porvenir ($$)

If you read most of the article above, you’ll know that I think spending at least one night at The Secret Garden Cotopaxi , if you can, is by far the best way to enjoy the park .

Not only is it an affordable option, but this hotel is truly stunning, with incredible front-seat views of the volcano, a variety of room options for every budget, great food, and friendly staff.

Don’t skip the free daily waterfall hike , and make the most of the unlimited coffee / tea and fresh banana bread . Plus, end your evening in the hot tub with a view of the stars.

Looking for other accommodation options in Cotopaxi National Park? Consider staying at Hacienda El Porvenir . Here you can expect similarly stunning views to those at The Secret Garden.

Rooms are slightly nicer and you’ll have more privacy than you would at The Secret Garden , considering there are no dorm room options.

Don’t think about traveling without a good  VPN (Virtual Private Network) . Cotopaxi on a Budget

If you’re looking to visit Cotopaxi on a budget, you have a few options worth considering, either for a Cotopaxi day trip or an overnight in Cotopaxi National Park. Here are the best options for taking a trip to Cotopaxi on a budget:

  • Take public transportation to Cotopaxi from Quito
  • Choose an inexpensive small group Cotopaxi day tour from Quito
  • Stay overnight at The Secret Garden Cotopaxi

Taking public transportation to Cotopaxi is clearly the most inexpensive way to travel. Including public transportation to get to the bus station in Quito, and the bus to get to Cotopaxi you’ll spend $5 USD or less – that is less than $10 round trip.

However, you’ll have to negotiate with the location tour providers at the entrance to the national park once you arrive in order to get inside and tour the park. While you can generally negotiate a tour of the park for $20-30, you don’t really have any way to predict what the tour will entail.

This is why I highly recommend just booking an inexpensive Cotopaxi day tour from Quito . Group excursions can be extremely affordable in Ecuador. You’ll know what you’re getting, and have more time to enjoy the park at your leisure.

You’ll probably only save about $15 USD over the course of the day by going on your own, which for most travelers just isn’t worth it.

Don’t count out staying overnight at The Secret Garden Cotopaxi as an option, even if you’re traveling on a budget.

The Secret Garden has affordable dorm rooms , and prices include the cost of all meals. Plus, the excursions they organize in the park are much cheaper than if you were to take an excursion from Quito – and they even offer a free (fantastic!) daily waterfall hike for guests.

If you can fit it in your itinerary, they also offer an incredible 3 day, 2 night deal for just $95 USD in total . This includes transport to and from Quito, all meals, and an excursion to hike Pasochoa – an incredible hike and a favorite day trip from Quito .

You can add on other activities, like biking or hiking to the glacier line of Cotopaxi, as you want.

Even if you can’t do the 3 day, 2 night package, taking the morning shuttle from Quito for only $10 to the hotel, plus the cost of one overnight and any excursions is a great deal.

Quito To Cotopaxi: A Summary

The journey between Quito and Cotopaxi is roughly 31 miles (50 km).  It will take around 2 hours to drive directly between the two locations, depending on traffic, road conditions and mode of transport.

The most popular way to travel between Quito and Cotopaxi is by  shuttle bus or an organised day tour.

In summary,  there   are four ways to get from Quito   to Cotopaxi.  These options are:

  • Tourist shuttle
  • Private transfer
  • Day trip (organised tour)

Personally,  I think the best way to get to Quito to Cotopaxi is by  tourist shuttle (coach).  Tickets can easily be  booked online here , making your journey reliable, easy and straightforward.

But, there are four ways to travel between the two places, so I’ll explain them all and let you decide!  Let’s get down to the ins and outs of travelling between Quito and Cotopaxi!

🚂 NOTE: Looking for the train between Quito and Cotopaxi? There used to be a train route between Quito and Cotopaxi. As of 2023, all train routes in Ecuador are closed.

Quito to Cotopaxi

1. Quito to Cotopaxi by public bus

If you have plenty of time to spare when in Ecuador, you can attempt to board the public bus to travel between Quito and Cotopaxi. So, how do you make this journey? Let’s break it down step by step!

  • Travel to the Quitumbe bus terminal, which is in the south of Quito . You can get here from your accommodation via tram or taxi.
  • Find a bus going to Cotopaxi. This is a lot easier than it sounds, as most buses are labelled with crazy giant signs on the front. Tickets shouldn’t cost more than $2-3 USD each way.
  • Tell the bus driver you are going to Cotopaxi National Park. This way, he’ll know he needs to stop and you can jump off.
  • The journey takes 2.5-3 hours. I recommend downloading an eSIM so you can track your route as you travel.

When you arrive at the National Park , you will need to book a local guide. The park is massive and exploring by yourself on foot just isn’t possible (this is why it also makes sense to just book an organised tour that includes transfers).

🦉 TOP TIP: If you want to spend longer than a day in Cotopaxi, I recommend speaking to and booking with Secret Garden Hostel . You can stay with them in Quito , and book a tour to Cotopaxi easily with them. They organise both transfers and accommodation. Most backpackers do this when in Ecuador and want to visit Cotopaxi!

2. Quito to Cotopaxi by tourist shuttle

Another popular way to travel between Quito and Cotopaxi is via the Fantasy Bus . The Fantasy Bus (love the name) is a tourist shuttle that provides transfers from Quito to Cotopaxi, and you’re then left to explore the site on your own.

The Fantasy Bus is a large, modern and clean bus. It aims to reach Cotopaxi within two hours, but of course, expect delays from traffic and road conditions.

If you’re boarding the Fantasy Bus , you need to travel to the pickup point. They’ll then drop you back in Quito at the drop-off point. It might be worth checking how easy these points are to get to your accommodation before booking.

You can check prices, details, pickups and drop-off points for the Fantasy Bus here.

Quito to Cotopaxi

3. Quito to Cotopaxi by private transfer or taxi

If you’re short on time or would just prefer to travel without bumping into fifty other tourists, you can book a private transfer . This is the quickest way to reach Cotopaxi, and you reach it in comfort .

The journey in a private transfer (or taxi) shouldn’t take longer than one hour and 45 minutes. However, this is South America, so you can expect a few bumps in the road (pardon the pun).

If you’re already in Quito, you can ask a yellow, licensed taxi how much they would charge to drive you to Cotopaxi. Or if you’re like me, and prefer everything to be organised, you can book a modern, clean and comfy private transfer here !

On average, a taxi from Cotopaxi to Quito (or vice versa) will cost around $50-70 USD. You will need to talk to the driver to agree on a price before confirming your trip.

4. Quito to Cotopaxi by organised tour

One of the most popular options when visiting Cotopaxi is to book via an organised tour . This is especially good if you only have a short time in Ecuador but still want to see the impressive sight of Cotopaxi.

All tours include transfers, so you don’t need to worry about booking taxis or buses. They also include a guide and (usually) entrance fees.

Depending on the tour you book, you can hike Cotopaxi with your new friends, take a scenic horse ride or join a traditional cooking class. There are plenty of tours to choose from, and you can see your Cotopaxi options here.

Not all tours include lunch, so if that’s something you’re looking for, be sure to check the ‘what’s included’ section.

🦉 TOP TIP: If you want to spend longer than a day in Cotopaxi, I recommend speaking to and booking with Secret Garden Hostel . You can stay there in Quito, and book a tour to Cotopaxi with them! They organise both transfers and accommodation . Most backpackers do this when in Ecuador and want to visit both Quito and Cotopaxi without the fuss!

Where to stay in Quito

Quito is a big city. Whilst we were there, we stayed in two different areas;  the main city centre and La Floresta.

If you’re staying short term, I recommend the city centre.  This is the main cultural ‘hub’ (although there is nothing going on at night) and has a lively atmosphere during the day.

For digital nomads and those staying over 2 nights in Quito, I recommend La Floresta.  This is a buzzing part of Quito full of bars, restaurants and cafes.

Sadly, we were told – by locals themselves – to  not walk around Quito at night.  I have no idea what it is, but Quito at night is exceptionally quiet for a capital city. Even in the busy parts!

If you’re visiting Quito, I highly recommend cooking your own meals in the evenings or staying at a hostel that runs family dinners at night.  When writing this, we did not feel safe walking around Quito at night (but safety is subjective).

Some of the  best accommodations in Quito include:

  • Viajero Hostel  (city centre): a beautiful hostel that includes free breakfast!
  • Community Hostel  (city centre): the perfect social hostel for the  Amazon Rainforest tour!
  • Secret Garden : (city centre): around a 15-minute walk to the main square, and is ideal for specific Cotopaxi tours.
  • Hotel Stubel Suites & Cafe  (La Floresta): a hotel with offers stunning views of the Guápulo Valley.
  • NH Collection Quito Royal  (La Floresta): a more luxurious stay with a health club, free WiFi and free breakfast.

  • Secret Garden Cotopaxi   (book via  Secret Garden Quito ): perfect for backpackers, couples, solo travellers and those wanting a once-in-a-lifetime trip in Cotopaxi.
  • Tambopaxi Lodge :  a remote lodge in the Cotopaxi National Park. Perfect for those who want to escape the real world, hunker-down in front of a fire and be surrounded by incredible landscapes.
  • Cuscungo Cotopaxi Hostel & Lodge :  perfect for all ages, another traditional and beautiful wood cabin in the middle of Cotopaxi.

What to pack for Ecuador

Packing for Ecuador  is similar to most Central/South American countries,  although you need to pack some warmer clothes for locations like Quito.

Don’t forget travel insurance for South America!

If you’re visiting South America as a backpacker, or even for a short vacation, it is  so  important to have  travel insurance .   And  if you ended up on a post that’s called ‘epic party tips’, you know (just as well as I do) that you  definitely  need travel insurance.

Personally, I recommend  SafetyWing .  As a digital nomad and world traveller myself, I can confirm it is the best travel insurance out there. And one of the cheapest – they have deals that start at  just $42 USD per month.

I know, I know, you’re thinking  ‘but I can’t afford that!’ . I was the same! It’s tough to fork out $42 a month on something ‘you might not need’. But what if something DOES happen? That extra Mezcal shot results in you falling down the stairs, or you eat something dodgy from a street food van.

If you need medical help at  any point  whilst in South America,  you need  travel insurance.

With  SafetyWing , you’re covered on travel emergencies, basic medical costs and medical expenses throughout your trip, so you can travel without worry (at a backpacker’s price!)

Don’t even think twice about getting travel insurance for South America . Trust me, I have heard enough horror stories about backpackers who haven’t had insurance and have ended up in a  lot  of debt. Don’t be that person!

If you’ve been putting the job off because it takes a lot of time and effort to research the  best travel insurance companies , I understand. That’s why I’ve done the hard work for you. Sign up for  SafetyWing , and the job is done!

NO BUS ON: 24, 24 & 31 DEC & 1 JAN

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure you check the bus timetables for each pass as not all routes have daily departures.

Info About Our Luxury Buses

Ecuador hop – #1 bus company in ecuador.

As well as an unbeatable safety record, Ecuador Hop is also famous for its punctuality and comfort. In South America, where things often run later than scheduled, we are very proud to say we achieve a 98.5% on-time arrival for each trip.

If comparing Ecuador Hop to other bus companies, make sure you check their safety record, past accidents, as well as their Tripadvisor page (if they even bother to have one) as often you will find there is a reason why some bus companies have “cheaper” prices than Ecuador Hop.

Features Of Our Buses

Short Distance Buses

  • Modern bus models: We use only up-to-date, well-maintained and high-quality buses to ensure top safety standards and comfort (this is not always a guarantee in Ecuador).
  • Climate control: We make sure the temperature is comfortable for everyone on board.

  • GPS monitoring system: We monitor location and vehicle speed from our headquarters, ensuring your safety.
  • USB ports available: Charge your mobile phone or tablet on board the bus!

Bus Safety Controls

  • Large team of drivers: Our drivers are not overworked/tired as is often the case on other buses.
  • Tour guide onboard: Our tour guide does regular checks on the drivers.
  • Seatbelts: We have a seatbelt for every passenger and ask our passengers to wear them at all times.
  • 24 hour GPS monitoring: Every bus is monitored from a secure point via GPS…we always know where the bus is and if it is taking any unscheduled stops.
