Salem Trolley Tour
The Salem Trolley Tour is perhaps the best way to see Salem if you’re in a hurry or new to The Witch City. In just one hour, The Salem Trolley Tour visits nearly twenty spots in town. Some notable places guests visit include: The Salem Witch Museum , Salem’s gorgeous Pickering Wharf, The House of the Seven Gables, The Old Burying Point, and many more.
Variety of Stops
Something that makes this particular tour worthwhile is that it, unlike many other Salem attractions, explores more than just The Salem Witch Trials . In addition to 1692’s history, you’ll also be educated about Salem’s incredible maritime, architectural, merchant, and literary histories. They also offer “Special Tours” which are themed and in a constant rotation – check their website for these.
Shuttle Service and Trolley Path
Jumping into the Salem Trolley Tour also means you’ll be able to get on and off at ANY of the stops along the way. So, if you’re a savvy Salem-goer, you can definitely use the trolley as a pseudo-shuttle service that runs from The Salem Regional Visitor Center . From there, you’ll venture west to the Old Burying Point and then west past The Salem Witch House and into the architectural beauty of Chestnut Street. Then, the trolley heads south to the waterfront. After that, it swings as far to the east as land allows, all the way out to Winter Island. The Salem Trolley Tour concludes by backtracking from the east and swinging north, back to The Salem Regional Visitor Center .
It’s important to know before you jump on The Salem Trolley Tour that several of the stops are designated as “Flag Stops.” What this means is that if you’d like to get off the trolley at these locales, you’ll need to let the driver know by signaling onboard. These stops include (as of September 2018):
- South Harbor Garage & the New England Pirate Museum
- Phillips House, Hamilton Hall, and Chestnut Street (incredible architecture here, by the way)
- The Salem Maritime Historical Site
- Salem Willows Park
- The Salem Ferry (with connecting service to Boston)
- Winter Island

Of course I visit Boston and my first thought is Salem. Now knowing that I know next to nothing about Salem except for its witchy history, we signed up do a trolley tour with Salem Trolley. The trolley had Neil as our narrator and Karen as our driver. They took us round and round all over Salem and they were so engaging. Got to see many sights, plus hear epic tales about the witch trials, pop culture, and the like. Neil definitely knows his stuff. It made our ride around town fantastic.
I was really looking forward to the trolley in Salem. Unfortunately, the first person that I encountered as a representative for the trolley was James. He was rude, sarcastic and condescending. He told me wife that she asked a stupid question and was so snarky. If I had not already paid for the tickets I would have left. I also witnessed that he lied to people and told them that he would be selling tickets in 30 minutes and to come back. After the family left he returned to selling tickets. I couldn't believe that this man was representing a company. He should not be serving the public. What a disgrace!! I would beware of this company if you come across this man selling tickets. Please look at the photo, and stay away!! Please hire someone with integrity. There has to be someone else who could sit there and take people's money without being a jerk!
James, the jerk!! He should not be serving the public!!
If I could give NEGATIVE stars I most definitely would!!! My experience at Salem Trolley began trying to purchase a ticket with this employee named James. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! I asked James a question regarding boarding the empty trolley present and he said in front of a line full of people, " what about it, that is a stupid question?" He continued his deplorable behavior with disparaging commentary, cursing and yelling. Gasps abounded in the long line of patrons. In today's day and age, who spews language so blatantly ignorant, rude, and nasty to a paying customer? Especially being the first person you encounter representing this business. This guy James is a DISASTER and should be fired IMMEDIATELY!! HE SUCKS!! Salem Trolley needs to get its act together and hire competent, professional, and kind individuals. Until they do, AVOID at all costs!!
SALEM TROLLEY JAMES, IGNORANT AND RUDE EMPLOYEE SALEM, MA.
It was December 1st and it was time to meet with the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future to remind us of the importance of Christmas. The Salem Trolley's Ebenezer did not disappoint! He was quick on his toes and extremely witty! The interactive play was down right hysterical! My 12 year old was a member of Bob's family, I danced at Feziwig's Holiday party, my mother was a crying child on the ghost of Christmas present and my best friends mom was the apple of Scrooge's eye. There is something here for everyone! Some parts happened on the trolley some at local locations. If you can't take a joke, don't buy tickets. It's light hearted and a slight edge to a classic tale. I would highly recommend this event. Merry Christmas to all!

This was an excellent tour!! Our tour guide Mark was funny and informative. He's a local and lived here all his life, and wanted to share Salem as he sees it. We were on the ferry trolley so we got to do things a little different than the regular tour. We stopped at the wharf and got to get off and take pictures. We had so much fun on this tour and got to learn some different things than we would have otherwise. It wasn't witch-themed at all, and I'm thankful for that. Salem has a rich history aside from the 9 months there were witch trials, and we got to see so much of it. This was so much fun and well worth the money.
We went to Salem(on our Boston trip) on a Friday in October thinking it wouldn't be as crowded as a weekend. It was SUPER CROWDED! We got in line for the trolly right away and bender up being in line behind about 100 people. There was los of traffic balling things up for the trolly. We ended up waiting almost 3 HOURS! We sat in the first row behind the driver. That was the worst seat. I could see our guide but not out the windows. Our guide told us tons of info about Salem which was very interesting. It was fun to visit Salem but super crowded!
I think taking the Trolley around Salem is an absolute must. For $20 a person, you get an all day pass on the Trolley. I recommend first time, take the whole trolley without getting off. Then you see all of Salem and then if you want to go back to something the same day, get on the trolley and get off at the stop you want to be in. Definitely recommend it. The trolley is first come first serve. Yeah, you pay, but if you ain't in line when it comes..come again. I believe it runs every 45 minutes. On the tour we went on, it takes you to the wharf, the house of gables, the willows, hear about the dead horses and the christmas trees, by the bewitched statue and the little downtown area, the witch museum, witch dungeon, and witch house. Hear about the history and not just the witch history of Salem. Recommend.
A stop on the trolley tour
A Haunting Incantation: Salem Trolley's Eerie Embrace! Gather 'round, ye daring souls, embark on Salem Trolley's ghostly stroll, Tammy's hand on the wheel, a specter's touch, through winding paths, we clutch. A guide of shadows, her voice bewitched, of bygone days, where spirits twitch, Ensnaring tales, with each creak and sigh, history's echo, it shall not die. Open sides, a portal grim, revealing secrets, darkness within, Beyond witch trials, a realm arcane, where lost souls dwell, their sorrows remain. Charter Street's silence, spirits near, House of the Seven Gables, whispers unclear, Witch Dungeon's echoes, the past returns, Salem Witch Museum, where darkness yearns. The waterfront's embrace, a spectral dance, the haunted past, in every glance, Chestnut Street, a haunted lane, where shadows linger, never wane. Enigmatic shadows, secrets unfold, Salem Trolley's ride, a tale untold, Embrace this journey, through shivers and fright, in Witch City's grasp, you'll spend the night! By the moon's pale light, this eerie rhyme, with Salem Trolley, transcend space and time!
This was an awesome trolley ride with a super entertaining host. Very informative and I highly recommend it.
Meh, I'm not sold on it. I only did this because my partner already bought the tickets for our visiting guests. The tour guides were friendly enough but the pricing and then the expectation of tips after was honestly ridiculous. I honestly stopped listening after all the bad jokes and irregular history telling that was being given. I was more interested in seeing the sites and mapping out Salem in my head. I would NOT do this again but hey if this is something that gets you going, by all means.

Whether you only have a few hours to experience Salem or your feet just need a break from walking, the Salem Trolley is an excellent way to learn about this intriguing town. Visitors can either stay on the trolley for the duration of the tour (which lasts approximately one hour), or hop on and off at their leisure while they explore historic Salem. Aboard the trolley, local tour guides narrate Salem's fascinating history, pointing out notable landmarks, such as The House of the Seven Gables , Old Burying Point Cemetery and the Salem Witch Museum , along the way.
Recent visitors praised the trolley's knowledgeable tour guides, calling them informative and entertaining. However, some travelers noted that the service was disorganized and the trolley gets crowded quickly, making hopping on and off difficult. For the best experience, visitors recommend taking the full one-hour guided tour instead of using the trolley as a shuttle service.
Tours begin and end at the National Park Service Visitor Center in downtown Salem. Tickets for adults cost $22, children ages 6 through 14 cost $12 and kids 5 and younger ride for free. Visitors must purchase tickets in-person on the day they plan to ride (online tickets are not available) at one of the following locations: outside of the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center, the Salem Trolley Office or the Landing at Salem Ferry. With the exception of Easter Sunday, tours run daily April through October, on November weekends and on the Friday after Thanksgiving from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last full tour departing at 4 p.m. Keep in mind, tour hours are seasonal and subject to change, so check the Salem Trolley's website for the most up-to-date information.

#1 The House of the Seven Gables
Built in 1668 for Capt. John Turner I, this waterfront mansion was home to three generations of Turners before being sold to Capt. Samuel Ingersoll in 1782. After Ingersoll's death, the property was inherited by his daughter, Susanna Ingersoll. Susanna's cousin, now-famous author Nathaniel Hawthorne, visited her here often and the property eventually became the setting for his 1851 novel, "The House of the Seven Gables." Although the official name of the house is the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, the home quickly took on the name given to it by Hawthorne.
In 1910, the home opened to the public as a museum. Philanthropist Caroline Emmerton, the museum's founder, hoped to preserve the home for future generations and use the proceeds to help fund settlement programs for immigrant families. Today, the museum honors her wishes by funding social work and offering various types of educational programming, including English language classes and community-based conversations on immigration. At the museum, visitors can marvel at original period features that span four centuries, including the home's extraordinary Georgian paneling, and climb a hidden staircase that leads to the structure's attic. In addition to the House of the Seven Gables, the property boasts a collection of six historic buildings set along Salem Harbor. Other buildings within the collection include the Hooper-Hathaway House, the Retire Beckett House, the Counting House and the Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace, which was moved here from its original location on Union Street in 1958. It also includes a visitor center and a museum store where guests can purchase unique souvenirs. The whole campus has been designated a National Historic Landmark District.

The Salem Trolley Tour experience
Salem is a city located on the north shore of Massachusetts, in New England , and is most famous for the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. Howver, the trials lasted for less than a year and over 400 years ago. Not to diminish the horrors, importance and significance of this time, but there is so much more to Salem than the witch trials! Taking a ride with the Salem Trolley Tour means you get to learn about all the fascinating things that have occurred in this part of New England!
Undoubtedly your first instinct will to want ot visit the city in October, and it iwll be an fascinatining time to go, with lots going on in the city. But, it will also be SUPER crowded, making hotels expensive and find places to park and eat tricky. Instead, consider visiting off season. Or, if you still want the fall vibes, consider the shoulder month of September. No matter waht time of year you visit, Salem Trolley Tours will be the perfect way to see the best of the city, ensuring you have a fab trip.
Salem is perfect for a long weekend, or short break, as it is small but packed with things to do. Its walkable, so start with a Salem Trolley Tour and work out the places you want to return to.
You can also include Salem as a stop on a larger New England roadtrip – I highly recommend Kennebunkport, Maine and Vermont , with Salem being a final stop before flying home from Boston.
How to get to Salem
If you are coming from Boston there are numerous ways to arrive:
- By car , although driving in Boston might want to be something you avoid. There are multi storey car parks in Salem which are easy to navigate. It would be advised to get there early, particularly on weekends, as they do get very busy. Located right next to the National Park Service Visitor Centre is a car park. Handily, this is where the Salem Trolley Tour starts from.
- You can catch a bus , which takes approximately an hour.
- Alternatively there ferries from the city. Which while exciting, is also a tad expensive.
- The final option from Boston is the train which leaves from Boston North Station to Salem on the Rockport line. A standard ticket costs around $8.
Salem Trolley Tour
If you are limited on time in Salem, this is a fantastic way to see much of the city. It has 14 stops along the way, which each show one of the highlights of the city.
The Salem Trolley tour starts and ends at the National Park Visitor Centre. However, you can also hop on and pay for your ticket on the trolley at some of the other stops. The great thing about the Salem Trolley tour is that your ticket is valid all day, and you can jump on and off as much as you like.
How long does the Salem Trolley Tour take?
The full tour takes one hour, if you decide not to get off. However, the beauty of a Salem Trolley Tour is that you can hop on and off. You can get off at each stop that takes your fancy, explore, and then jump back on to the next trolley that passes. There are 6 flag stops along the route, where you can ‘flag’ the Salem Trolley Tour to re – board!
Tours are run daily from April through to October with the last tour leaving the visitor centre at 4pm. The first tour leaves at 10am, so get there early to make sure you can make a full day of it.
What information will the Salem Trolley Tour give?
Each trolley has a very knowledgable guide on board to give you all the information you might need as you make your way through the city. Skip was the guide on the Salem trolley tour I took and despite the on board PA system not working and traffic jams we encountered he worked so hard to keep us informed for the entire tour. Plus – such a sweetheart!
Where does the tour visit?
There are 14 stops along the 8 mile route, each showcasing a different part of the Salem history. These include the Witch Trial Memorial , Salem Maritime Site , the House of the Seven Gables, Philips House, Hamilton Hall and Chestnut Street . Just to name a few!
You learn so many interesting facts about Salem along the way. Such as seeing the oldest sweet shop in Salem , the building that now sits on the wharf which was moved there after being purchased for $1! And the site of the original monopoly factory.
How much does a Salem Trolley Tour cost?
Tickets for adults are $25 andSeniors (60+) are $24. There are also tickets available for children (6-14) at $15 and children 5 and under are free (when accompanied by an Adult).
After the tour ends, make sure to go back and visit the bits that interested you most! And, as you will soon discover, there is so much more to Salem than a single years worth of history. Despite what tourism might say!
Blogger transparency: I was offered my tour on the Salem Trolley tour with compliments but, as always, all thoughts and opinions are my own!

“Karen was AMAZING! Her knowledge and passion for Salem were incredibly inspiring! We not only experienced amazing food & drinks, but also learned about the rich and extensive history of the true Salem. HIGHLY recommend this food tour with Karen! We have done many in different cities and states, and this was definitely THE BEST! Can’t wait to return!”
“Fantastic Tour! Fun thing to do with a group of friends… would definitely book it again!”
“We booked the Salem Spirits Trolley tour and it was one of our favorite things of the entire weekend. I highly recommend you do a food tour by Karen and/or her husband! The tour met at Salem Spice where Karen and the store owner told us about different spices and spices that are used in distilleries and what not and it was fantastic! I can’t wait to use the spices and olive oils that I bought there!”

Step into “A Christmas Carol” This December in Salem, MA
Tickets for the Salem Trolley “A Christmas Carol” ride are selling out fast. See website for details.
Now entering its 37th season, the Salem Trolley & Gallows Hill Theatre “A Christmas Carol” trolley ride is truly a delight this holiday season. Trolley riders step into the classic story “A Christmas Carol” written by Charles Dickens for a little over an hour, coming face to face with the lively characters that we all know so well. The enclosed trolley takes you through the streets of Salem as you accompany Scrooge on his journey and encounter the spirits of Christmas past, Christmas present, and Christmas future.
Your journey begins this year at Timless Life Treasures, located on Pickering Wharf here in Salem, MA, filled with warmth and merriment as you await the arrival of the first few characters of the tale. Bob Cratchit bursts through the door with glee to greet you as you peruse through the holiday gifts and displays that the staff over at Salemdipity have carefully set up. The scene is set and holiday songs are sung, when suddenly, Scrooge walks in changing the tone entirely. He informs you that you will be following him onto his trolley, and that if you know what is best for you your tickets had better be out and ready once seated.
The trolley pulls away from the wharf with a spurt and Scrooge reminds you that there will be no festivities or cheer to be had while on board. A pocket watch is used to keep time throughout the journey and plays a vital role in the through line of the evening. Scrooge inspects his watch carefully letting the group know that it was his former business partner Jacob Marley’s watch. Chains rattle and in a flash of white and light, Marley appears on the trolley in the flesh! He warns the group of the spirits that are to come and vanishes quicker than he had appeared. As a part of the story, Scrooge pulls you along with him as he departs the trolley and into a theater space to explore visions of his past.
The entire show truly is an interactive experience with audience participation playing a big part in the telling of the story. There are opportunities to dance with a young Scrooge in his past, sing Christmas songs with Fezziwig, and break bread on Christmas night with the Cratchit family. Scrooge’s transformative journey plays out before your eyes and invites you to be a key piece of the puzzle in his change of heart. The Salem Trolley & Gallows Hill Theatre “A Christmas Carol” trolley ride really is a great way to spend time with your friends and family while getting out of the house during this cold season. Nothing brings you closer to your loved ones quite like a grouchy Scrooge heckling you for an evening and filling the night air with laughter.
