Sonoma travel guide: The perfect three-day itinerary

  • Sonoma travel

The second most renowned North American wine region, Sonoma , has long suffered the fate of being compared to the more famous wine valley that runs parallel to it: Napa . But outside of sharing a border, these two regions couldn’t be more different.

Sonoma wine country is actually double the size of Napa Valley, extending far beyond the town of Sonoma to worthwhile destinations like Healdsburg and the Russian River Valley, the funky town of Sebastopol, and even the Pacific Ocean.

While Napa Valley has zeroed in on Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varieties, Sonoma is far more diverse.

Home to more than 60 grape varieties (though Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the stars) and upwards of 400 wineries spread throughout 19 AVAs, Sonoma is also known for its abundance of farms, creameries, breweries and distilleries.

Due to its vastness, there are two common mistakes visitors to Sonoma make. They either plan only a day or two, hardly scratching the surface, or they schedule winery appointments, meals and hotel stays without realising it can easily take an hour to get from one to the next. As a result, they’re constantly running late to reservations on what’s supposed to be a relaxing holiday. By focusing instead on a specific area, you can spend time experiencing rather than rushing, and really immerse yourself in the best of what Sonoma has to offer.

The town of Sonoma: The perfect place to begin

Understandably, most people who visit Sonoma wine country start with the town of Sonoma. An easy, one-hour drive from San Francisco, Sonoma is anchored by the charming and historic Sonoma Plaza . The birthplace of the California flag, this square played a pivotal role in the state’s declaration of independence from Mexican rule. The historic buildings and adobes are now occupied by shops, wine tasting rooms, hotels and restaurants. Miles of vineyards and winery estates surround the town, offering a plethora of tasting options.

Check into the MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa for the weekend. Located in the heart of Sonoma and within a mile of the Sonoma Plaza, this idyllic resort recently completed a massive transformation.

The Spa at MacArthur is accented with modern, luxury elements, new treatment rooms, locker rooms complete with steam showers, an outdoor Hydrotherapy Spa Garden and Lounge, and a brand-new outdoor pool space complete with private pool cabanas. The Spa at MacArthur’s treatment menu offers a range of unique, bespoke therapies including skincare, body renewal treatments, massage techniques and 100-minute Journeys that include holistic healing elements.

Relax at the pool or spa before dinner at Layla, MacArthur’s Mediterranean restaurant, and then enjoy a nightcap at The Bar, a Gatsby-era lounge serving signature cocktails and late-night nibbles.

Embark on an easy stroll to the Sonoma Plaza for a Lavender Mist mimosa and breakfast in the back garden of Sunflower Caffé , known for simple and healthy dishes made from hyper-local ingredients. Afterwards, take a walk around the square, pop into interesting-looking shops, and visit Sonoma State Historic Park , where, for a $3 admission fee, you can access six historical sites, including the Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of the 21 California missions built.

Book a lunchtime tasting at Three Sticks Wines , housed in the Vallejo-Casteñada Adobe, the longest-occupied residence from California’s Mexican Period. The food and wine pairing ($110) includes a flight of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (crafted by Bob Cabral, former winemaker for the renowned Williams Selyem) paired with five bites from Sonoma Plaza restaurant El Dorado Kitchen. Or, you can make it a three-course private lunch.

Schedule a second wine tasting in the intimate salon of Sojourn Cellars , which sources fruit for its Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from some of the top vineyards in Sonoma County. Moreover, Sojourn is unique in that it also crafts Cabernet Sauvignon from both Sonoma and Napa. Through Sojourn’s comparative tasting format, you’ll learn to identify the nuances of each vineyard source.

Dine at Valley , an unassuming, French-inspired wine bar, restaurant and bottle shop that opened inside an adobe in 2020. Valley’s list is focused on natural and minimal intervention wines and simple, shareable plates. It combines seasonal ingredients with international flavours like XO eggs, Don Bocarte anchovies, and lamb with garlic yoghurt and za’atar. End the night with a glass of Champagne from Sigh , a glamorous bubbly bar located just around the corner from Valley.

Following a light breakfast at The Porch at MacArthur, a grab-and-go café, drive out to the bucolic Carneros AVA, which spans parts of both Napa and Sonoma. Start the day at Donum Estate ; even though it’s only a 10-minute drive from the hotel, once there, it feels like a totally different world. The Explore Experience ($200 per person) includes an ATV tour of Donum’s impressive open-air art sculpture collection, working farm, lavender fields and vineyards, culminating in a private tasting of its finest wines. Crafted with minimal intervention, Donum’s lineup showcases the diversity and uniqueness of California’s top-producing Pinot Noir regions, including the Russian River, Anderson Valley and its home base of Carneros.

Turn left back on Highway 12 and, after a few miles, pull over at the old country roadhouse that reads Lou’s Luncheonette . No reservations, so you may have to wait for a table out on the back patio (often shared with a few chickens), but the array of fried chicken options is worth it.

Lou’s hearty fare has probably whetted your appetite for something a bit different, so a trip to Carneros might be the right choice. Among Gloria Ferrer ’s many tasting offerings is the Extended Tirage Experience ($125), a tasting of all of the house’s vintage and longer-aged sparkling wines. The experience showcases the ageability of sparkling wine over a 90-minute tasting session.

The first wine country outpost from world-renowned chef Michael Mina, Wit & Wisdom has been the talk of the town since opening in 2020. From seafood towers to handmade pasta, wood-fired pizzas and hearty meats, the best strategy here is to order several plates and share, though the craft cocktails and duck wings are a must-order. You’ll leave feeling stuffed, but your bed at MacArthur is less than a mile away.

Return to Sonoma Plaza for brunch at the girl + the fig , a Sonoma staple. This buzzing and classic French bistro serves up comforting country food made with local ingredients – croque monsieur, quiche Lorraine, duck confit – that will soak up all of the weekend’s imbibing. Before you leave, take one last stroll around the plaza to digest and purchase last-minute souvenirs.

3 Day Sonoma Itinerary: Plan a Perfect Long Weekend in the Valley

Scenic Sononma Itinerary: 3 Day Trip Everything You Need To Know

Learn How to Explore Sonoma Wine Country with Our 3-Day Itinerary

Sonoma County is expansive, rugged, and wild. It spans from just north of Marin County up to Mendocino and is roughly twice the size of Napa. Within that expanse, there’s a wide variety of climates and terrains, from rocky coastal cliffs to pastoral inland valleys. And, within that expanse, travelers can find everything from white-glove dining to highway roadhouses – in Sonoma, it all makes perfect sense. Consider it the yin to Napa’s yang in the best way possible.

Sonoma’s kitschy nickname is “Slownoma” because it’s so much more laid-back than neighboring Napa. In that spirit, we’ve created a slow-foods-ish long weekend itinerary to experience Sonoma at its best.

How to Get To & Around Sonoma County

Sonoma is just north of Marin County, which hugs the peninsula dipping south towards San Francisco. It borders San Pablo Bay to the southeast, Napa to the east, Lake County to the northeast, Mendocino to the north , and the mighty Pacific to the west.

Given its proximity to San Francisco and the Bay Area, it’s about 2.5 hours from San Francisco International Airport (browse for flight deals here) . And while that may seem more of a day-tripping experience, Sonoma is so beautiful and large that it’s really worth creating a multi-day excursion. You’re here to decompress, after all – why rush it?

Winetraveler Tip: We strongly suggest renting a car and driving north from San Francisco along the Sonoma Coast and then ultimately inland. The drive around the region itself can be a highlight of this 3-day trip. Take a look at rental deals in San Francisco currently offered through Kayak.

We recommend several hotels throughout this guide, but you can always browse for hotel options in Sonoma here . You can also earn points and miles on everyday purchases (including wine) by leveraging some of our top travel reward credit card picks .

Alternatively, many visitors to the Sonoma region prefer not to drive and opt for hiring a private driver or tour guide. If this sounds like it’s more your speed, customize an itinerary with a private driver using Bliss Wine Tours , which also includes hotel pickup and dropoff. The service and experience is top-notch.

Sonoma Itinerary: Day 1

Nothing ever good comes of wine tasting on an empty stomach so let’s start off our first day at Basque Boulangerie Café at 460 1 st St E, right in Sonoma itself. With a large menu of pastries and light meals, Basque will provide the delicious base needed to prepare. And while we could spend the rest of the day exploring the shops around the square, we have wine to taste!

Not even a ten-minute drive from Basque is our first stop: Buena Vista Winery at 18000 Old Winery Road in Sonoma. Don’t worry about starting on too high of a note here – as stunning as Buena Vista is, we promise the rest will impress as well. That said, Buena Vista is breathtaking . Founded in 1857 by Hungarian count Agoston Haraszthy de Moksa, it’s California’s oldest winery despite that little hiccup known as Prohibition. Today, Buena Vista offers everything from dry Furmint (an indigenous Hungarian variety) to powerhouse Zinfandels so there’s something for every palate.

Before heading to lunch, take a moment to work off the tasting with some gorgeous views attached at Sonoma Overlook Trail accessible at 198 1 st St W in Sonoma. It’s only about 3 miles so it’s the perfect rejuvenator after midday wine.

From there, head to Tasca Tasca at 122 Napa Street in Sonoma for an incredible Portuguese tapas-style lunch. Guests can choose combinations of different small plates that include cheeses, veggies, blood sausage, and Portuguese seafood dishes.

Allocate the first afternoon for Hanzell . Set on the outskirts of Sonoma on 18596 Lomita Avenue, be sure to book a visit in advance (call 707.996.3860). Hanzell has updated to become a fully comprehensive organic farm as well as a winery and while touring the property, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to make friends with their herding dogs. Back at the cozily rustic tasting room, explore Hanzell’s lovely Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays.

How much energy do you have left? For a low-key dinner, try HopMonk Tavern at 691 Broadway in Sonoma. Check out live music in the garden as you unwind with a local beer and Nashville hot fried chicken. If you’re looking for something a bit more polished, it’s hard to go wrong with the girl + the fig in the Sonoma Hotel at 110 Spain Street in Sonoma. The epitome of California cuisine since 1997, the girl + the fig shows no signs of slowing down. The ingredients are about as fresh as it gets, and the wine list has some international gems. You can also take a Sonoma walking Food Tour for a fun and deeper dive into downtown.

Before you call it a day, be sure to explore Sonoma on foot and check out the San Francisco Solano Mission at 114 East Spain Street. If you want to dive deeper into California history, hold off until the morning when it opens back up and be sure to visit the memorial to indigenous people of the area.

Food, booze, and history can be exhausting. Bed down at the historic Sonoma Hotel at 110 West Spain Street. Set in a building from 1879, the Sonoma Hotel   will take you back in time while maintaining top service. The El Dorado Hotel  at 405 1 st Street West is another antique gem but with a pool, which can be a must on hot summer days. You can search for additional hotels during your travel dates  here.

In addition to the activities mentioned above, immerse yourself in Sonoma with some of these highly-rated tours and experiences offered by our local friends:

Sonoma Itinerary: Day 2

Start the day off at Sunflower Caffé at 421 W 1 st Street in Sonoma for a quintessential Californian breakfast. Granola waffles, avocado toast, and matcha lattes are balanced out with buttermilk biscuits and CBD sodas. Any direction you take will be delicious.

Before heading out of town, pop into the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art at 551 Broadway. With various exhibits of modern art, it’s an aesthetic delight and provides a little creative refresh before forging on to more wineries.

Bodega Bay in Sonoma County, California

Today, we’re heading to the coast. It’s about an hour to Bodega Bay and this is where things get wild: as soothing and elegant as Sonoma is, Bodega Bay is rugged, primal, and simply gorgeous! Thankfully, there are wineries along the way so we’ll stop off at Occidental at 14715 Bodega Highway in Bodega. Founded by Steven Kistler in 2011, he’s continued his commitment to excellence and the entire experience at Occidental is Sonoma at its best. With a very focused offering, Occidental’s wines are precise and elegant, much like the tasting room and property. Be sure to request a visit well in advance since tastings are by appointment only.

If you’d prefer something a little more off-the-cuff, pop into the Sonoma Coast Vineyards tasting room at 555 Highway 1 in Bodega Bay itself. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay shine on the cool northern coastline of Sonoma County, and Sonoma Coast Vineyards provides textbook examples of the wine.

Since you’re along one of the most fabled coastlines in the world, take advantage of the moment and explore the beaches. Certainly, not the warm and sunny beaches that come to mind when we think of California, the northern coastline is turbulent, rough, and craggy. It’s also incredibly beautiful and it’s easy to understand why artists’ colonies have popped up along the coast for the last two centuries. Pinnacle Gulch access is found at 20600 Mockingbird Lane in Bodega Bay, where a short hike will lead out to beautiful sands and views of the Pacific.

By this time, you’ve got to be hungry but let’s just keep things real and hit Casino Bar & Grill at 17000 Bodega Highway in Bodega Bay. This old-school tavern serves up inventive pub fare like barbecue and deep-fried hand pies. And although we’re sending you here for the food, check out the décor: that wallpaper is mid-century fabulousness!

No trip to Bodega Bay would be complete without re-enacting a scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.” Flail your arms about and scream at the imaginary flock of birds attacking you outside of Saint Teresa of Avila Church at 17242 Bodega Highway. Or better yet, spare the locals and don’t, but instead enjoy this historic and picturesque landmark.

Ready to dive back into some wine? Perfect! Head back inland a half-hour to Sebastopol and hit Dutton-Goldfield Winery at 3100 Gravenstein Highway North. Dutton-Goldfield uses the cool Sonoma coastal climate to the best possible advantage with its cool climate Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Chardonnay. Their Pinots are just as lovely and nuanced with bright berry notes and heady aromatics. Or, go to the famed Merry Edwards at 2959 Gravenstein Highway North instead. Although Merry herself is no longer at the helm, her namesake winery carries on the traditions she started with stunning results. The wines exhibit her particular attention to detail and it’s a pure delight to taste the many Pinot Noirs side-by-side. Be sure to secure at least a few of their unique Sauvignon Blancs while you’re there.

It should be right around now that you think “WOW am I hungry!” and as it turns out, you’re in a good spot. Underwood Bar and Bistro is at 9113 Graton Road in Graton, which is a “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” kind of town. There’s nothing to snooze on at Underwood, though, as you settle in for a stellar meal. Fresh oysters, panzanella salad, and hoisin-glazed ribs are met with a thoughtfully curated wine list. It’s a French bistro with a decidedly California twist, and the décor is endlessly explorable too.

If you plan with friends, definitely stay at the WineBerry Lodge  at 3025 Granvenstein Highway in Graton. This 3 bedroom house includes all the bells and whistles: pizza oven, decked-out kitchen, jacuzzi, and more. If you’re looking for somewhere a bit simpler to crash, try the Fairfield Inn & Suites at 1101 Gravenstein Highway in Sebastopol. It’s a standard hotel (with a pool!) that might fit the bill. There are also several adorable Airbnb rentals in the area that are worth checking out.

Sononma Itinerary: 3 Day Trip Everything You Need To Know

Sonoma Itinerary: Day 3

Westside Café at 171 Pleasant Hill Avenue N in Sebastopol should hit all those breakfast points: fantastic coffees, fresh juices, a pastry selection, and wraps for those who want something a bit heartier.

Ready to head north? It would be just wrong to visit Sonoma County and not experience glorious redwoods so our first stop today is Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve at 17000 Armstrong Woods Road in Guerneville. It’s about a half-hour north and west from Sebastopol and offers a range of trails, so you can explore as much or as little as you like.

However long you choose to hike, work up a thirst because our first wine stop is Unti Vineyards , about 40 minutes further north at 4202 Dry Creek Road in Healdsburg. (Do keep in mind that roads in this area are very twisty so please drive with caution.) Unti focuses on Rhône and Italian varieties, including Grenache Blanc and Aglianico. Unti also has estate-grown olive oil, which is a must.

After Unti, hop five minutes away to Ridge Vineyards at 650 Lytton Springs Road. Ridge is among the best of the best in Zinfandel and has been since the late 1970s. Book a tasting on the terrace to relax as you enjoy Sonoma Zin at its finest.

For lunch, let’s brighten up the palate a bit and hit Willi’s Seafood & Raw Bar at 403 Healdsburg Avenue in Healdsburg. An extensive raw bar is complimented with lobster rolls, crab cakes, and all sorts of fresh seafood goodness.

If by now you need a little break from eating and drinking, head over to Modern Antiquarium at 452 Healdsburg Avenue. Take some time to dive into the inventory because you truly never know what you’ll find here. From there, wander around Healdsburg Avenue and Healdsburg Plaza – it’s dotted with boutiques and curated shops.

Now recharged, let’s hit some more wineries! Seghesio , another standout Zin producer, is a quick walk at 700 Grove Street in Healdsburg. If you’d rather have something a little lighter, head to J Vineyards at 11447 Old Redwood Highway in Healdsburg for a delightful glass of bubbly.

For dinner, make reservations at the elegant Valette at 344 Center Street where you can enjoy an exquisite meal in a low-key environment. Or, try Bravas Bar de Tapas at 420 Center Street for fantastic Spanish fare in a lively atmosphere. Either one is sure to help end your trip on a high note!

For the last night, splurge for the Cottages at Healdsburg at 425 Foss Street. Each cottage is thoughtfully styled to maximize aesthetics and comfort at once. Or, Hotel Trio Healdsburg  at 110 Dry Creek Road offers more comprehensive hotel accouterments, including a pool and a fitness center.

Sonoma holds a bounty of nature, wine, culture, and creativity that it’s endlessly explorable. It’s worth taking the time to slow down and enjoy all that it has to offer. We hope you enjoy your trip, and please let us know in the comments what you liked most!

12 Incredible Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

When it comes to the best things to do in Sonoma Valley, this is my list of favorites after dozens of trips. Sonoma Valley is one of the places I feel so fortunate to get to return to often as it’s only a few hours away from me. I adore the Northern California small-town feeling you get here, the incredible food and wine, and the local welcome.

When it comes to visiting Sonoma , you really can’t go wrong with what you do. Not far from San Francisco, the valley is full of wonderful local restaurants, wineries, and outdoor spaces to enjoy. I find that a weekend here is my go-to for a relaxed break. It has it all.

sonoma valley trip

My latest trip done in partnership with Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau gave me the chance to experience even more of what wine country has to offer but with a twist. I spent the majority of my weekend diving deep into the array of wellness experiences on offer.

If you’re not a big wine drinker, then I think you’ll so appreciate this list of things to do in Sonoma County. So much of it is surrounded and connected by nature, with plenty to do over a weekend that feels restorative. And, of course, I had to include a few recommendations for wineries in Sonoma.

sonoma valley trip

When you plan your trip to Sonoma Valley, this list has it all. Get outdoors, eat local, stay in a charming hotel, and experience all that the Sonoma Valley has to offer.

The 12 Best Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

1. shop local at sonoma valley friday farmer’s market.

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

One of my favorite local things to do is to head to the Friday Farmer’s Market . Just off the plaza on 241 West First Street, the market opens every Friday morning from 9 to 12:30 p.m. It has so many wonderful vendors from across the valley selling everything from produce to pantry staples. I love to grab a bag of seasonal produce like persimmons in the wintertime. There is also The Bejkr , a stand selling wood-fired pretzels which are so amazing.

2. Dine Local With Fresh Eats

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

One of my favorite parts of visiting Sonoma Valley is the chance to eat at all of the local restaurants. I have my go-to’s and some new ones I tried recently. I adore Sunflower Caffé right on the plaza for breakfast and brunch. Their Turkish eggs are fantastic, and the back courtyard is charming. For lunch, Layla at MacArthur Place is a classic for elevated eats in a stunning space — I love their fresh salads here.

sonoma valley trip

Out in the valley, Spread Kitchen is my new find for Lebanese-inspired food. You can eat super healthy here and get mezze plates, the food here is nourishing and delicious. Another new find this trip was Valley Swim Club , from the owners of Valley Bar (another personal favorite.). The food is casual, seafood-focused, and great — get the Dungeness crab sandwich. And for an elevated dinner, get out to Glen Ellen for The Fig Cafe . Their food will transport you to France with classics like duck confit and seasonal cassoulet.

3. Stroll in the Sonoma Botanical Gardens

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

One of the great places to get outdoors is the Sonoma Botanical Gardens . It’s well worth a visit to explore the Asian woodland garden and native oak savanna (around 50+ acres) area. I love to come here to stroll to the top of the mountain where you get incredible views of the valley. With its serene atmosphere, scenic trails, and a deep commitment to preserving biodiversity, the Sonoma Botanical Gardens is a must-visit destination to get outdoors.

4. Book the Bartholomew Estate Forest Bathing Experience and Tasting

sonoma valley trip

One of the most impressionable experiences I’ve had in Sonoma Valley has to be the forest bathing and tasting experience at Bartholomew Estate . I had this experience last week (available for private bookings as well), and can’t recommend it enough. Certified Nature Therapy Guide, Jenny Harrow-Keeler, will guide you through the Japanese meditative practice of shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) out on the grounds of the estate. It’s so restorative and a chance to reconnect with your senses through nature. Afterward, you sit down to a tasting of Bartholomew Estate’s delicious wines like Pinot Noir. It’s one of those immersive experiences that combines wellness and wine you don’t want to miss.

5. Explore Bartholomew Park

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

One of the most wonderful areas to get outdoors just minutes from downtown Sonoma is Bartholomew Park . As part of the Bartholomew Estate, the 375 acres of vineyards, gardens, and forest are open to the public for use. You can explore the trails and grounds, whether or not you’re wine tasting which is so lovely. It is dog-friendly, so if you are looking for a place to get outdoors easily, this is it. And for those looking for family-friendly wineries in Sonoma, you can get a bottle of wine from the tasting room to enjoy on the property.

6. Have a Spa Day at The Spa at MacArthur Place

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

Recently renovated, The Spa at MacArthur Place is open to the public to experience its facilities and book a treatment. I spent the better part of a morning here and can say, this is now my recommended spa in the valley. The spa rooms are stunning and very tranquil, and I love that there is a private co-ed outdoor courtyard. There is a hot tub and steam room, with space to relax. The spa has several ranges of treatments — think everything from massages to 100-minute rituals to reboot you.

7. Stay On a Working Farm and Vineyard

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

If you’re looking to take a weekend trip to Sonoma Valley, book in at the quaint Beltane Ranch . Set out just outside of Glen Ellen, Beltane Ranch has 6 intimate and cozy rooms available. It’s one of the best hotels in Sonoma Valley . As part of your stay, you’ll have a farm-fresh breakfast, access to the grounds, and delicious housemade cookies at check-in. You’re conveniently located in the valley to explore everything as well. If you find yourself not wanting to leave the property for a meal (because it’s truly so good), order one of their seasonal charcuterie boards. Book the best rates here .

8. Go Wine Tasting at Coursey Graves Estate

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

Set atop the scenic Bennett Mountain, Coursey Graves Estate Winery is one of those places you’ll want to bookmark. You take a winding road that leads you to what feels like above the clouds. The estate winery sits up on a mountain with gorgeous views, surrounded by natural landscapes and stunning gardens. It’s private and intimate, so much so, that no large tour bus can even come up to the property. The award-winning wines are exquisite, approachable, and Bordeaux-style. Book in for their 90-minute winery tour and tasting for a private experience.

9. Shop and Stroll Along the Sonoma Plaza

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

There is so much going on in the historic Sonoma Plaza . It’s the center of Sonoma Valley, lined with local shops, restaurants, and wine-tasting rooms. I’d block in an afternoon to go through this part of Sonoma. One of my favorite shops on the Plaza is Chateau Sonoma . It’s all things French-inspired, French antiques, and home goods. I’d also head into their back patio space for some wonderful outdoor planters and more.

10. Visit a Local Farm in Sonoma Valley

The Ultimate Travel Guide to Sonoma, California

Open seasonally from April through the end of the year, my favorite local farm is Oak Hill Farm . Their “red barn” shop is open on Saturdays, where you can pop in and grab produce and other kitchen goods. It’s a wonderful local business to support when in Sonoma Valley. If you can’t make it out on Saturday, they usually have a stall at the Friday market.

11. Go Hiking in Jack London State Historic Park

Things to Do in Sonoma Valley

Many people don’t know that Sonoma Valley is much more than wineries — there are also amazing hiking trails and parks to enjoy. One of those places is Jack London State Historic Park near Glen Ellen. The historic park has trails and backcountry areas to enjoy for recreational use. I also love that there are picnic benches as well, so you could make an afternoon of it at the park.

12. Visit the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art

For modern and contemporary art, the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art is a spot to bookmark for your time. It’s just off the plaza and often has new exhibits throughout the year. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. and admission is free every Wednesday.

14 Best Things to Do in Sonoma County

Sonoma is all about the wine. Everywhere you turn, you'll spot undulating hills lined with rows of grape vines punctuated by grand architecture. Places like Jacuzzi Family Vineyards , Cline Family Cellars , Gundlach Bunschu Winery and Buena Vista

Sonoma Plaza Sonoma Plaza free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Many hotels outside of downtown Sonoma, such as the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa , offer a free shuttle right into the Plaza. This way, you can skip both driving after wine and ordering an Uber home. – Amelia Edelman

Centered in the heart of town, historic Sonoma Plaza is a must-see. Once a Mexican military station and a Spanish mission village, the 8.5-acre park is now lined with more than 100 shops, dozens of eateries and more than 20 tasting rooms. What's more, it was dedicated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Recent visitors highly recommended spending some time here window shopping, wine tasting, dining and even letting the kids run around the on-site playgrounds. Reviewers say the plaza's atmosphere is both charming and family-friendly, and they suggest visiting on a Tuesday evening to take advantage of the weekly farmers market.

Jacuzzi Family Vineyards Jacuzzi Family Vineyards

Around the time of the Great Depression, Valeriano Jacuzzi – of the Jacuzzi bath and spa family – bought a 161-acre plot of land in Northern California, which would become Jacuzzi Family Vineyards in 2007. Today, the vineyard contains common grape varietals such as pinot grigio and cabernet sauvignon, as well as some more unique offerings like arneis. Along with wine tastings and vineyard tours, Jacuzzi also offers house-made olive oils.

Recent travelers remark on the beauty of the rolling landscape, as well as the friendly staff and the old-world Italian architecture; the main building features arched windows and a Murano glass chandelier. In addition to the wines, Jacuzzi's olive oil and balsamic vinegar earn high praise from visitors.

Santa Rosa Santa Rosa free

Santa Rosa is known as the city heart of Sonoma County. With Santa Rosa Junior College and a multifaceted economy – healthcare, technology, agriculture and tourism all have strong roles to play here – the city thrives on diversity. But don't let its urban vibe fool you: Santa Rosa's tasting rooms, wineries and vineyards rival those of outer Sonoma County's rolling hills.

With its Victorian architecture, art galleries, chic hotels and restaurants, Santa Rosa offers the best of both worlds when it comes to city versus country. Its compelling Museum of Sonoma County and Charles M. Schulz Museum let travelers learn about art and history between wine tours. The Luther Burbank Center for the Arts is one of many theaters and venues that host renowned entertainment acts and musical artists, and it's just one piece of Burbank's legacy in the area; check out the Luther Burbank Home & Gardens for more.

Buena Vista Winery Buena Vista Winery

Located about 3 miles east of Sonoma Plaza , Buena Vista Winery is one of the region's most centralized wineries. Its rolling hills and rustic architecture lend it an elegant French countryside ambiance. Fittingly, Buena Vista's Champagne – which hails from France – is one of its most well-regarded wines. Founded in 1857, Buena Vista is California's first winery to produce European varietal wines. Visitors can enjoy this historic winery by tasting its vintages and touring the facility.

Visitors highly recommend adding this property to your Sonoma itinerary. They especially suggest taking a tour of the grounds and facilities to learn all about the winery's process and its illustrious history. (For example, Buena Vista's founder, the self-proclaimed "Count of Buena Vista," met his end in alligator-infested waters in Nicaragua.)

Jack London State Historic Park Jack London State Historic Park

Located on 1,400 acres, Jack London State Historic Park – named for the author of works including "The Call of the Wild" and "White Fang" – features over 29 miles of trails. The land, which London referred to as "Beauty Ranch," also contains his old home, a museum about London and his family, and the gravesite where he was laid to rest at age 40.

Recent visitors were delighted with the Jack London State Historic Park, noting its beauty and all of the interesting anecdotes they learned about the writer's adventurous life. Others said the mix of literature and outdoors is wonderful, though some warned that the hiking can be a bit challenging on hot days, and shade isn't always accessible.

Sonoma Coast State Park Sonoma Coast State Park

U.S. News Insider Tip: Fuel up for your state park explorations at nearby Boat House , where Captain Rick Powers hauls in the freshest seafood via schooner, right from the Sonoma Coast. – Amelia Edelman

Sonoma Coast State Park is a swath of land that extends for 16 miles along the Pacific Ocean, from Bodega Head to Vista Trail. A number of sandy beaches, rugged shorelines and coastal prairies dot the area. The California Department of Parks and Recreation doesn't recommend swimming here due to the rough waters, but rock fishing, surf fishing and beach combing are popular activities.

Trione-Annadel State Park Trione-Annadel State Park

U.S. News Insider Tip: There are picnic tables and portable, accessible restrooms, so travelers of all abilities can enjoy the scenery, whether or not they're embarking on a hike. – Amelia Edelman

The wilderness of Trione-Annadel State Park comprises more than 5,500 acres about 5 miles east of Santa Rosa. Visitors love its 40-plus miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding across a diverse landscape of hills, grasslands, chaparral, volcanic rock and more. Trione-Annadel State Park's wide variety of ecosystems translates to prime opportunities for creature-spotting: travelers may be able to spot coyotes, deer, woodpeckers, pygmy owls, or even a red-legged frog or mountain lion. Botany fans will also be delighted, as the park's vast array of wildflowers includes shooting stars, irises and the rare fairy slipper orchid. Recent travelers commend the park's beautiful views, abundant birdsongs and well-marked trails – but they warn hikers to watch for mountain bikers moving more quickly on the shared trail space.

Benziger Family Winery Benziger Family Winery

As its name suggests, this winery has been family-owned and -operated since 1980. Aside from its familial leadership, Benziger is perhaps best known for its biodynamic farming and winemaking. In fact, all of its wines are certified sustainable, organic or biodynamic.

Reviewers highly recommend the informative, award-winning tours (including a tractor tour), all of which take visitors through the property's vineyards, gardens and sheep fields. Recent guests also highlighted the remote beauty of the winery, which is located in Glen Ellen, less than 10 miles north of Sonoma.

sonoma valley trip

Cline Cellars Cline Cellars

Cline Family Cellars makes a nice flight of wines, and they do so with sustainability in mind. They even created a new method of farming – the Green String farming method – to promote biodiversity and biological cycles. And instead of using pesticides to eliminate weeds, the winery relies on a herd of sheep and goats. Guests of Cline Family Cellars may get to say hello to some of the animals on a winery tour, before which they'll also learn about the history of the property and see the barrel room.

Recent travelers raved about the gorgeous estate, the delicious wine, and the friendly and enthusiastic staff. Many reviewers also noted Cline offers discounts and complimentary tastings for members and their guests.

sonoma valley trip

Nicholson Ranch Nicholson Ranch

Though Nicholson Ranch is smaller than other Sonoma-area wineries (comprising 40 acres), it's a hit with visitors thanks to its intimate setting. Wines produced here – the majority of which are made with estate-grown fruit – include chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot and syrah. Another interesting facet of the production process: The vineyard ages select wines in French oak barrels, which are uniquely stored underground in caves.

Recent travelers said this relatively small winery was big on charm. The intimate setting was complemented by friendly and informative guides and gorgeous views of surrounding Sonoma.

sonoma valley trip

Geyserville Geyserville

Geyserville, part of Sonoma County's Alexander Valley, provides an engaging balance of wine country elegance and small-town, old-school charm. Nestled among vineyard-covered hills, the small town (with a population of only 861) retains the Wild West character of its original settlement. Long before the 1970s California wine boom, Geyserville was a stagecoach stop and a hub for farmers, and its downtown – and much of its well-preserved architecture – still dates back to the 19th century.

As with much of this region, Geyserville's wineries and culinary scene shine bright, with farm-to-table cuisine taking center stage. Recent travelers to the town recommend the Francis Ford Coppola Winery, as well as the Pedroncelli and Trentadue wineries, for excellent tastings in beautiful spaces; the former boasts quite the film-history display of Coppola's work, too. Nature enthusiasts will also love the area, with spots for fishing and kayaking on the nearby Russian River, plus the town's fascinating geological history. (Geyserville's name does indeed come from its now-inactive geothermal steam vents.)

sonoma valley trip

Safari West Safari West

Picture the Serengeti in the heart of wine country and you'll start to imagine what Safari West looks like. This African-inspired safari and nature preserve contains nearly 1,000 exotic animals, such as zebras, giraffes and cheetahs, spread across 400 acres. When you're not exploring the grounds on your own two feet or in an open-air safari vehicle, spend the night gazing up at the stars in one of the preserve's luxury tents (more like glamping than camping).

Visitors say Safari West is a great way to experience the wildlife and terrain native to Africa without ever leaving the United States. Along with the amazing animals and beautiful landscape, travelers also praise the knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Sonoma's TrainTown is a family-friendly favorite that lets visitors hop on a 20-minute train ride winding through 10 acres of picturesque evergreen forests. The train park features a roster of classic amusement park rides – think: carousels, Ferris wheels and the like – that both kids and adults will enjoy. INSIDER’S TIP: SMALL-LOT SIPS AT B.R. COHN WINERY

Find B.R. Cohn Winery in paradise-like Glen Ellen, where the mountains shroud from the coastal fog and promote generous airflow over the vineyards, which are planted over hot springs. The magical setting of one of the best Sonoma wineries sees grapes bursting with tannins, which vintners then craft into full-bodied estate, small-lot, and limited-release wines. The best way to enjoy a visit is with a wine flight, where vintners guide you through a tasting against the backdrop of the 55 gorgeous acres of the winery. Treat yourself to an add-on of a local cheese plate, too.

Reap the benefits of a Travel + Leisure Wine membership, with an exclusive wine club gift and a complimentary wine flight tasting for 2-4 people at B.R. Cohn, depending on your membership tier.

SONOMA BIKE RENTAL & WINE ROUTES

Insider’s tip: time-honored tasting at kunde family winery.

Five generations have worked this stunning 1,850-acre estate — crafting wines from the lush devil’s food cake notes of the 2018 Reserve Century Vines zinfandel, to the crisp and citrus-forward 2021 Magnolia Lane sauvignon blanc. A special treat here are the dog hikes, where you can bring your pup and join winegrower Jordan Kunde through the gorgeous vineyard rows and grasslands before a winetasting and country lunch. Or, opt for the mountaintop tour and tasting, which begins with a vineyard tour and ends at the tasting deck. Perched 1,400 above Sonoma Valley, this experience is truly a highlight of your weekend in Sonoma.

Plus, Travel + Leisure Wine members can savor an exclusive wine club gift, a complimentary 2-4 person seated tasting experience at Kunde (depending upon your membership tier), and the option to add an artisan cheese plate for just $15.

INSIDER’S TIP: CALIFORNIA-CURATED CUISINE AT VALETTE

Insider’s tip: cold & bold bottles at sonoma coast vineyards.

No weekend in Sonoma is complete without a chance to chill out — as in by savoring the cold-climate wines of Sonoma Coast Vineyards. The winery harvests grapes from the cold-climate soils by the Pacific and west of the Russian River Valley, turning out bottles with bracing flavors. Gems include the gently bubbly Brut Rosé with hints of cranberry and ripe melon and the silky 2018 Pinot Noir which boasts boysenberry and white pepper notes, rounded by a hint of tobacco leaf. A jaunt to the bright tasting room is also your chance to sip winery-exclusive bottlings while you overlook beautiful Bodega Bay.

Bonus: Travel + Leisure Wine members can get an exclusive wine club gift, plus a complimentary 2-4 person self-guided flight experience at Sonoma Coast, depending upon your membership tier.

SMALL GROUP SONOMA WALKING FOOD TOUR

Insider’s tip: farm-fresh fare at the matheson, insider’s tip: italian inspirations at viansa.

Think of this last stop on your Sonoma itinerary as trip across both California and Italy, as the founding winemaking Sebastiani family traces their roots back to the rolling Tuscan hills. Italian inspiration shines through the warm and celebratory experiences at the hilltop villa, which offers panoramas of all of Sonoma Valley, along with the wetland preserve that borders the olive tree-dappled vineyards. Among the exceptional elixirs here is the 2018 Cielo “Quattro” super Tuscan red blend — its notes of sweet oak, violet, and dark chocolate boosted by the 26-month aging process. Tasting experiences include a private wine flight in the grownup treehouse-like custom Outlooks, to cozy sips by the fire in the Loggia alcove. Be sure to traipse to the Market, too, where you can feast on irresistible Italian meats, cheeses, and prepared foods to pair with the wondrous wines.

At Viansa, Travel + Leisure Wine members can take advantage of an exclusive wine club gift, plus a complimentary 2-4 person wine flight tasting experience, depending on your membership tier.

It's also home to one of the few California wineries that offer luxury accommodations on the property for members of Jordan Estate Rewards if you're seeking a truly immersive wine country experience.
