Key Factors Influencing the Philippines Tourism Industry Growth

The Philippine economy relies a lot on tourism. Many people like to travel to the Philippines to enjoy its peaceful atmosphere and delicious food. Tourists especially love the Philippines because there are many tasty foods and beverages to choose from. Social media is making more people interested in culinary tourism in the Philippines .

In June 2023, the Philippines introduced its new tourism campaign called "Love the Philippines." It changed it from "It's More Fun in the Philippines" to focus more on real and deep experiences after the pandemic.

On Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, travel influencers are showing off beautiful places and travel services online. Tourism companies are also putting ads there to reach more people. Consequently, there is likely to be around a 2.8X surge in the sales of tourism in the Philippines by 2034.

Hoteliers are using apps more to manage visitor services, giving them better control over the visitor experience. Also, services like digital check-in and contactless cards are getting popular, while facial and fingerprint verification help with payments and record keeping. This is boosting sales in the Philippines' hospitality industry.

In the Philippines, there are lots of different things to do for eco/sustainable tourism . People can join community activities in the Philippines, like fixing houses, planting mangroves, or helping with schools. They can also teach new skills or work on projects like building a visitor center or fixing up a forest.

Historical Industry Study on the Philippines Tourism alongside Future Projections

From 2019 to 2023, the Philippines tourism industry showed promising growth, boasting a 9.80% CAGR. Hotels in Metro Manila are getting better after the pandemic, with 4 million tourists visiting in the first nine months of 2023. That is almost twice as many as in 2022 and close to the year-end target set by the Department of Tourism. Tourists have already added US$ 5.7 billion to the economy.

Prices are still not as high as before the pandemic, and more places to stay are being made. If the government and cities with lots of future places to stay do well economically, more people might want to stay there, and the places might get fuller. More hotels are being built, with 6,400 new rooms expected by 2026, mostly in Quezon City and Pasay City. This trend is expected to contribute to the positive outlook of the Philippines tourism industry.

Social media is helping the tourism industry in the Philippines grow. Travel influencing is the new buzzword in the market. Travel influencers visit different places to promote tourism, and the Philippines is no exception. They now share the real footage of places and their experience on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and tourism companies advertise there too. In the Philippines, there are 86.75 million active people using social media.

As social media platforms are proliferating more day by day, it is expected to help the industry develop more during the forecast period.

Top Opportunities for the Philippines Tourism Industry Players

In October 2022, the Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Philippines changed the entry rule for travelers with the e-Arrival Card system. This system is easier because it does not need a mobile app and asks for less information. Also, by the end of 2024, the government plans to start a VAT Refund Program to give back VAT on things tourists take out of the country.

DOT started the "Tourism Champions Challenge" to help cities and towns with tourism, giving them $3.2 million. Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who bring foreign tourists to the country can win prizes in a raffle called "Bisita, Be My Guest." Therefore, the future of the Philippines tourism and hotel market looks bright. Hotels in the Philippines are getting better, with more people coming, owing to promotions and help from the government.

Key Trends Shaping the Philippines Tourism Industry

  • The Philippines travel industry is increasingly adopting sustainable practices. It aims to minimize environmental impact and promote responsible travel.
  • Another evolving trend in the Philippines tourism industry is the increasing interest in medical and wellness tourism. The country is capitalizing on its natural resources to promote spa retreats and wellness-focused travel experiences.
  • With the growth of remote work, more people are choosing to work while traveling. The Philippines has an affordable cost of living and reliable internet connectivity. This trend makes the Philippines an attractive destination to remote workers.

Tourism Industry Analysis in the Philippines by Segment

As far as the tourist type is concerned, the domestic segment is likely to perform better in 2024, holding 58.00% of the Philippines tourism industry share. Similarly, the 26 to 35 years segment is expected to generate significant turnover in terms of age group, possessing a 47.00% revenue share of the tourism industry in the Philippines in 2024.

Influence of Domestic Travelers is Very High in the Philippines Tourism Industry

The domestic traveler segment is likely to become the prime revenue generator within the industry. The main reason Philippine tourism is bouncing back is because more people are traveling within the country. In 2022, most overnight travelers were locals, with around 40 million visitors.

People prefer to visit their own country nowadays because they know about their own culture and interesting places there. Individuals also find domestic traveling cost-effective as it does not necessitate the huge amount of money required for trips abroad or getting visas. These travelers often know people and have friends in the places they visit, so they can do special things that they may not be able to do outside.

Tourism Emerged as the Go-to Choice for 26 to 35 Years Age Group

The 26 to 35 age group is the top segment in the industry. The main reason this segment is growing is because individuals belonging from this age group have enough money to travel. They are financially stable, so they can go wherever they want, whether it is within their own country or abroad.

People aged 26 to 35 like to travel because they want special and unforgettable experiences in each place they go. They really want to explore different tourist spots and are excited about seeing adventure sites. People in this group also enjoy adventurous activities like scuba diving and exploring different islands, which are easy to find in the Philippines.

Tourism industry players in the Philippines employ miscellaneous strategies to get a competitive edge. Some players give high priority to enhancing infrastructure for smoother travel experiences. At the same time, many prioritize industry to showcase natural beauty and cultural richness. Some adopt sustainable practices to attract tourists who are extremely concerned about the environment. While others collaborate with the government to leverage policies for tourism promotion. Many make substantial investments in digital platforms for convenient traveler services.

Recent Developments

  • In November 2023, the Department of Tourism and the Tourism Promotions Board Philippines launched the updated Travel Philippines app. This improved digital platform marks the start of the Philippine tourism industry's digital transformation. The aim is to offer travelers a more convenient way to explore the country.
  • In October 2023, the Department of Tourism introduced its inaugural Tourist Assistance Call Center following the Philippines' achievement of over 4 million international arrivals. The call center is going to be available round-the-clock, connecting tourists with live agents who can offer information on various aspects. Some of these include addressing tourism complaints, responding to inquiries about the Philippine tourist destination policies, providing details on transportation options and accommodations, among others.
  • In July 2023, the Department of Tourism launched the Philippines Hop-On-Hop-Off (HOHO) service in the capital city, debuting Manila's "Cultural Hub" tours. Secretary Frasco was accompanied by officials from the City Government of Manila, headed by Mayor Honey Lacuna, along with representatives from the tourism industry.

The Philippines: A rising tourism destination in a post-Covid world

  • Benjamin Layug
  • September 4, 2021
  • 4 minute read

In the article “Rising Stars in Travel” by travel writer Jared Ranahan of Forbes.com, the well-respected American business and financial news publication, the Philippines was named among seven countries (the others are Ethiopia, Iran, Myanmar, Georgia, Slovenia and Tunisia) that “have potential to become major tourist destinations in a post-Covid world.”

Even as the global tourism industry struggles in the midst of the unprecedented downturn due to the pandemic, many nations around the world are preparing for a boom in international visitors once travel is more feasible. These seven highly underrated countries have the ingredients to become world-class destinations and establish themselves as a prominent regional force for tourism—pristine natural beauty, historic ruins, and fascinating cultural experiences.

The Philippines offers unique experiences for all kinds of tourists looking for a relaxed and laid-back getaway from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives, from sandy shores to dreamy mountain scapes to awe-inspiring cities steeped in cultural heritage.

Of course, the No. 1 tourist destination in the country is still the 10.32-sq-km resort island of Boracay, famous for its 4-km long, powder-fine white beach, which is lined with a number of world-class resorts and hotels.  Across the island from white beach is Bulabog Beach, a windsurfing and kite boarding mecca.  Awarded as the Best Island in the World by the international travel magazine Travel + Leisure (T+L) in 2012, Boracay was also at the top of the “Best Islands in the World” list published by the international magazine  Condé Nast Traveler. In 2016, Boracay headed the magazine’s list of “Top 10 Destinations To Watch.”

Similarly, Travel + Leisure cited the island province of Palawan as the world’s best island in the 2020 World’s Best Awards, besting 24 (Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, Maui in Hawaii, Bali in Indonesia, Great Barrier Reef Islands in Australia, etc.) others in the world’s islands category with a score of 94.83. Boracay also made it to No. 14 in T+L ’s World Best Island list and was hailed 5th in Asia that same year.

Offering some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches, resorts and scenery such as striking limestone cliffs extending directly from the ocean, here you can also dive in World War II shipwrecks off Coron (a piece of nature and history enveloped in one destination), explore old-growth rain forests and paddle into Puerto Princesa Subterranean  River, one of the world’s longest subterranean rivers, a Unesco World Heritage Site (1999) and a New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2012. Last year, Condé Nast Traveler also cited the Hidden Beach in El Nido as one of the 30 Best Beaches in the World.

Speaking of diving, the Philippines was recognized, for the second time, as the world’s leading dive destination during last year’s 27th World Travel Awards, besting other famous dive destinations such as the Azores Islands, Bora Bora, French Polynesia, Cayman Islands, Fiji, Galapagos Islands, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, Maldives and Mexico.  Similarly, Intramuros in Manila, a well preserved example of Spanish colonial architecture, was named as the world’s leading tourist attraction winning, for the first time, against Acropolis in Greece, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Grand Canyon National Park in the United States, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and Taj Mahal in India, among others.

Siargao, in Northern Mindanao, also won as the World’s Leading Island Destination.  The “Surfing Capital of the Philippines,” its Cloud Nine, a dramatic and powerful reef break, was recently dubbed as the Top 8 among the World’s Best Surfing Spots by CNNGo, a travel site of CNN International. It is also home to beautiful white-sand beaches, naturally carved tide pools, mangrove forests, coves, serene lagoons and caves.

Speaking of Spanish colonial architecture, aside from having world-class diving sites, beautiful white-sand beaches and world-class resorts, Cebu and Bohol are also home to many Spanish-era churches, ancestral houses and watchtowers.  Though many Bohol churches were destroyed or heavily damaged during the October 15, 2013 earthquake, almost all have been rebuilt and faithfully restored.  When in Bohol, a visit to the Chocolate Hills, a National Geological Monument proposed for inclusion in the Unesco World Heritage List, is a must.

Way up north in Luzon is Vigan, a Unesco World Heritage Site.  The best preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town and one of a few left in the country whose old structures have remained mostly intact, its main draw are its sett pavements, Earthquake Baroque  church and stone houses ( bahay na bato ) which fuse native Philippine and Oriental building design and construction.  In May 2015, Vigan was officially recognized as one of the New 7 Wonder s Cities (together with Beirut, Doha, Durban, Havana, Kuala Lumpur and La Paz).

Also up north in Luzon is where you will find the spectacular mountain scenery of Cordillera Administrative Region, home to the spectacular Ifugao Rice Terraces, a Unesco World Heritage Site inscribed in 1995; the 2,922-m (9,640 ft) Mount Pulag (the highest peak in Luzon and the third highest in the country), a mountaineers delight; the much-loved, cloud-wreathed and pine-clad Baguio City, the “Summer Capital of the Philippines;” the mighty and swirling Chico River of Kalinga, a white water rafting and kayaking destination; and Banaue and Sagada (home to the “hanging coffins” and Sumaguing Cave), both heaven for adventurers.

WTTC’s Latest Economic Impact Report Reveals Significant Recovery in the Philippines Travel & Tourism Sector in 2021

philippines tourism industry

Travel & Tourism jobs in the Philippines increased by 20.5%

Fourth fastest Travel & Tourism GDP growth rate for any country in the world in 2021

MANILA, Philippines: The World Travel & Tourism Council’s latest Economic Impact Report revealed last year the Philippine’s Travel & Tourism contribution to the nation’s economy climbed 129.5.% year on year, to reach US$ 41 billion.

Following an 80% decline, this impressive rise saw it ranked as the world’s fourth fastest growing economy during 2021.

News of the sector’s growing revival from the pandemic was revealed today by Julia Simpson, President & CEO of the World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC ), which represents the global Travel & Tourism private sector, at its prestigious Global Summit in the Philippines.

It was delivered in the capital, Manila, before more than 1,000 delegates from across the global Travel & Tourism sector, including CEOs, business leaders, government ministers, travel experts and the international media.

WTTC’s Economic Impact Report (EIR) for the Philippines shows that in 2021, the sector supported 7.8 million jobs, representing a substantial 20.5% rise in 2020, compared with a global increase of 6.7%.

Before the pandemic, the Philippines Travel & Tourism sector’s contribution to GDP was 22.5% of the total economy (worth US$92.6 billion). However, due to damaging travel restrictions it then plunged by 80.7% to a mere US$ 17.8 billion, dropping to just a 4.8% share towards the country’s GDP.

But in 2021 this rose to US$ 41 billion, representing a 10.4% share of the nation’s total economy, which signals the recovery of the sector is well underway.

The latest EIR also takes a forward look at the sector with the global tourism body forecasting that the Philippines Travel & Tourism contribution to GDP will grow by 6.7% over the next decade, exceeding the expected country's overall economy average growth rate of just 5.6%.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “Our latest EIR for the Philippines signals the astonishing recovery of the country’s Travel & Tourism sector.

“Resulting in a massive employment boost for the sector, leading to the recovery of 1.3 million more jobs compared to the previous year. Our expert analysis shows that the economy has turned a corner and is firmly on the road to recovery.”

As a result, WTTC forecasts that the Philippines Travel & Tourism contribution to GDP could be worth in excess of US$ 155 billion in 2032, accounting for 21.4% of the whole economy.

With Travel & Tourism employment forecast to grow annually by an average of 3% over the next 10 years, nearly three million new jobs could be created, accounting for 21.5% of all jobs in the Philippines.

WTTC’s 2022 EIR marks a vast change in fortunes for the embattled Travel & Tourism sector in the country, which was left reeling by the impact of the pandemic but is now firmly on the road to recovery.

Foreign visitors drop to 84% in 2020 due to travel restrictions

PHILIPPINE tourism stakeholders believe that this year is crucial in rebuilding the country’s tourism industry battered by the global pandemic that hit in 2020.

“I believe 2021 is a major transition year for all of us,” Tourism Promotions Board Chief Operating Officer Anthonette Velasco Allones said at the Kapihan sa New York online dialogue with the Fil Am Press Club of New York on Thursday, Jan. 27.

Revenue lost from international tourism in 2020 was P400 billion, Department of Tourism and TPB officials estimate, with the number of foreign visitors that visited the Philippines falling to almost 84% due to travel restrictions.

DOT Undersecretary Roberto Alabado III said that 8.2 million foreign tourists visited the Philippines in 2019 and because of the restrictions imposed around April, the department noted that there were only about 1.3 million foreign tourists for 2020.

“The drop in arrivals means billions of pesos in tourism revenues brought devastation on the economy,” Alabado said, noting that January 2020 was off to a good start and had an 11% increase in the number of visitors from the same period in 2019.

As restrictions were imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19, the number of tourists dropped.

In a statement, Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said the impact of COVID-19 that started to be felt in the first quarter of 2020 “was unprecedented and spared no one.”

“With the closure of borders to international tourist traffic and the imposition of quarantine measures, tourism activities ground to a halt affecting various enterprises and displacing workers,” Puyat said.

The tourism sector employed an estimated 5.7 million. Nearly five million workers either lost their jobs or their salaries slashed.

Jojo Clemente, president of the Tourism Congress of the Philippines, said that they have been working with DOT, TPB and the various stakeholders to jumpstart the tourism industry and start rebuilding.

Clemente said they were looking at the balikbayan market across the diaspora to help in this undertaking.

“Kababayans have always wanted to come back home even before the Christmas season last year. We are hoping that with the ongoing vaccination rollout, the situation as far as travel restrictions will get better,” he said. “We have done our best in the private sector for tours to be more flexible owing to the circumstances we’re facing.”

The government slowly eased domestic travel and some destinations have reopened for domestic tourists, including El Nido, Boracay, Bohol, parts of the Ilocos region, Baguio City, parts of Bataan, Batangas and Legazpi City.

According to Alabado, the DOT continues to assess whether the destinations are ready to open and meetings with the various local government units have been ongoing.

“We are trying to safely and gradually reopen but in the end, it is still the LGUs’ call whether they are ready to reopen or not,” he said.

Allones agrees, saying that the industry is willing to adapt to the evolving needs and requirements essential to reopening.

“Safety is the new luxury,” said Allones, who took over TPB’s reins in February 2020. “All our partners like hotels, the transport sector, parks and amusement, they have all endeavored to make sure that our tourists are safe.”

Allones also said that they have pivoted to digital technology and created a Travel Philippines app to ensure that the right and updated information is properly disseminated.

This travel app includes information, basic updates and general protocols, among others and is meant for tourists and stakeholders.

As the government continues to slowly ease domestic travel with the reopening of destinations with health and safety protocols in place, the stakeholders are hopeful that visitor arrivals to the country will make its steady climb to reach pre-pandemic figures.

Philippine tourism industry seen to reach pre-pandemic levels by 2024

philippines tourism industry

By Revin Mikhael D. Ochave, Reporter

THE DOMESTIC tourism sector is expected to reach pre-pandemic levels by 2024, although near-term challenges such as high inflation may affect demand, according to industry stakeholders.

“We consulted our members, we also talked to some experts, reports coming from United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and many of them are really looking at 2024 as the year that we can go back to pre-pandemic levels. So, the next year and a half will be crucial,” Philippine Hotel Owners Association (PHOA) Executive Director Benito C. Bengzon, Jr. said in an interview with BusinessWorld Live on One News television channel on Monday.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic brought travel and tourism to a standstill around the world. The industry is slowly recovering as travel restrictions ease and COVID-19 cases drop.

Mr. Bengzon said he is optimistic that the tourism and hotel industry is heading towards recovery, after travel demand improves during the summer months.

“For the hotel industry, we have been registering very good occupancy rate in the last couple of months. This has been driven by the strong demand among Filipinos who are out on summer vacation,” Mr. Bengzon said.

Preliminary data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) recently showed that the share of the local tourism industry to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) inched up to 5.2% in 2021 from 5.1% in 2020. However, this is still signi fi cantly lower than the 12.7% seen in 2019.

Tourism Congress of the Philippines (TCP) President Jose C. Clemente III said that most countries and industry experts are aiming to see travel and tourism to reach pre-pandemic levels by 2024.

“Of course, that will depend on some factors such as the war in the Ukraine and COVID-19 or new viruses that may come to light. If there is a resolution to Ukraine sooner than later and no new viruses, then travel and tourism should be okay,” Mr. Clemente said in a Viber message.

John Paolo R. Rivera, associate director at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) – Dr. Andrew L. Tan Center for Tourism, said in a Viber message that the projection of attaining pre-pandemic levels by 2024 is “reasonable” but may have already factored in disruptions from the pandemic, global economy and other external factors.

“However, it is also possible to reach pre-pandemic levels as early as 2023 if no disruption will happen such as a surge, lockdown, war, political instability, and security threat. While it is not likely, we are living in a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world. Anything can happen,” Mr. Rivera said.

However, the spike in fuel and food prices may pose a challenge to the industry’s recovery.

“Any increase in oil will invariably a ff ect prices of commodities and services across di ff erent sectors… This (oil hike) is a challenge but we don’t really see it as a dampener,” Mr. Bengzon said.

Mr. Clemente said that the industry has little control when it comes to in fl ation, which is expected to continue accelerating in the next few months.

“Coping with challenges such as inflation and oil price hikes, unfortunately, are external factors that the travel and tourism industry has little control over. The most we can do is to do our best to keep prices down as best we can but still continue to make acceptable margins,” Mr. Clemente said.

“We have to remember that tourism is also coming out from a two-year hibernation and we are just starting to get back on our feet. We also need to make back what we lost during the peak of the pandemic,” he added.

Mr. Bengzon said the local tourism industry needs to achieve an “optimum balance” to achieve recovery.

“We know that there’s still some restrictions on international travel. For domestic (travel), for us to really sustain this growth momentum, it’s really important that we’re able to contain COVID-19, to make sure that Filipinos who travel around the country observe health protocols,” the PHOA executive director said, noting that tourists from major markets such as South Korea, Japan and China are crucial to recovery.

According to AIM’s Mr. Rivera, the tourism industry’s recovery can be supported by encouraging more Filipinos to get their COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots.

“Everyone should get vaccinated and boosted, continue complying with minimum health standards so we can make sure that we are towards no alert level and avoid an increase in alert level so mobility continues to progress,” Mr. Rivera said.

PH 2022 tourism revenues hit P209-B

The country’s 2022 tourism industry generated P208.96 billion ($3.68 billion) in revenues, a whopping 2,465 percent increase from 2021, with 2.65 million international visitor arrivals as of end this year and setting the stage for a more vibrant 2023, the Department of Tourism reported.

In a report, the DOT said the figure covered only from February 2022 to end December because the tourism industry only reopened its borders for all type of travelers in the second month of last year. The DOT further noted that tourist arrivals exceeded the 1.7-million target for the year.

With the reopening in February, Filipinos abroad flocked back to the country for the annual Christmas and New Year celebrations as well as visits from foreign tourists who chose the Philippines as their holiday destination.

Of the total 2.65 million international visitor arrivals last year, 628, 445 were returning Filipinos while the bulk of 2.02 million tourists were foreigners from the country’s top tourist markets from the United States (505,089), South Korea (428,014), Australia (137,974), Canada (121,413), the United Kingdom (101,034), Japan (99,557), Singapore (53,448), India (51,542), Malaysia (46,805), and China (39,627).

The DOT also reported of an estimated 5.23 million tourism-related jobs generated. There were also 11,989 DOT-accredited tourism enterprises as of December 29, 2022. A total of 25,770 tourism stakeholders have also been trained.

In her New Year’s Eve message, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said this clearly showed the gains of the Marcos administration’s support for tourism and the hard work of the entire tourism industry towards recovery amid the setbacks from the unprecedented crisis brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Frasco noted that the numbers were achieved despite the new administration’s being only six months in office as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was elected only in May last year.

Frasco expressed optimism for 2023 as a year filled with abundance, optimism and hope. “Moments of great difficulty are also moments of great opportunity. In the past, we have overcome a global pandemic, survived various calamities, and thrived through a host of many other challenges, yet, the Philippine tourism industry has managed to exceed expectations and our tourism partners and frontliners continue to offer the best of Filipino grace and hospitality to the world,” the tourism chief said.

Frasco also thanked President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. for his continuous support to the tourism industry as one of the drivers for economic recovery.

She noted that the efforts made by the Department, together with its partners, were part of the current administration’s vision for it to be a catalyst for the Philippines’ economic resurgence not only in terms of job opportunities but investments as well.

“Therefore, we welcome 2023 with gratitude and excitement for Philippine Tourism to bounce back stronger than ever. We shall welcome with warmth and that distinct Filipino smile visitors from all over the world as they visit our award-winning beaches, experience the richness of our culture, and enjoy our world-renowned Filipino Brand of service excellence,” she said.

Earlier, Frasco revealed to the media that the DOT is targeting 4.8 million international visitors in 2023 as its baseline but she remains hopeful that the Department will again surpass its targets just like the achievements done in 2022.

“We look forward to the continued convergence and collaboration of our tourism stakeholders— travelers, tourism players, national agencies, local government units, and host communities— in propelling our industry to the heights of becoming a tourism powerhouse in Asia,” the tourism chief concluded.

MANILA -- President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has called for a continued relationship between the government and the private sector to promote the Philippine tourism industry.

The tourism industry has significantly contributed to the revenue generation, job creation and economic growth of the country, according to President Marcos.

In his speech delivered by Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Esperanza Christina Garcia Frasco during the Tourism Summit on Monday, President Marcos said the significant contribution of the private sector to the country’s tourism industry has made the Philippine destinations stood out from others.

“To the exemplary industry leaders, content creators, and key players who are making an impact in the tourism community: You are serving your country well with your exceptional work. You are also showing us what it takes, what it requires, to give the Philippines that edge over other destinations,” President Marcos said.

“Ladies and gentlemen, let us continue this partnership between the government and the private sector, working together to support our MSMEs, including those catering to the needs of the tourism industry,” the President added.

The President also expressed gratitude to the Go Negosyo led by business leader Joey Concepcion, the DOT and its partners and to the Inspiring Tourism Entrepreneurs Awards recipients.

He also urged the private sector “to bring the rewards of a thriving tourism industry directly to the Filipino people” as he reminded them to always keep in mind the need to protect the environment, to care for all people, and to utilize the resources with great prudence.

“For, at the end of the day, we are not just entrepreneurs – we are all promoted advocates and protectors of our beautiful country. Only by being so can we make the Philippines a truly sustainable, inclusive, and resilient global tourism hub,” he said.

The chief executive also acknowledged the contribution of the tourism sector to the country’s economy.

He said the DOT is on track to realizing its goal under the National Tourism Development Plan for 2023-2028 that outlines a clear path towards establishing a sustainable, resilient and competitive tourism industry.

The President said the DOT has been intensifying efforts to enhance tourism services in the country by implementing the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE) program, among other efforts that attracted thousands of tourists.

In 2023, the DOT recorded 5.5 million inbound tourists, which is 15 percent higher than the 4.8 million target for the year. In the first four months of 2024 alone, DOT’s record showed more than two million tourist arrivals

“These numbers, and the accompanying visible increase in economic activities and commerce across our famous destinations, are a testament to the industry’s recovery,” President Marcos said.

“These also prove that the active participation of every stakeholder matters; that one’s perseverance to acquire more skills, know-how, and networks makes a difference in our tourism agenda. At the same time, these numbers pose challenge for us to translate these gains into tangible benefits – benefits for our people, our communities and our economy,” he added.

Before concluding his speech, President Marcos expressed confidence that the tourism summit will become a venue for the revival of the country’s tourism industry, which was greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. (PND)

Marcos says tourist arrivals show PH tourism recovery

philippines tourism industry

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has said the tourist arrivals in the country have proven the tourism industry's recovery.

In a speech delivered by Tourism Secretary Esperanza Christina Garcia Frasco during the Tourism Summit 2024 on Monday, Marcos said the Department of Tourism (DOT) has been intensifying efforts to enhance tourism services in the country by implementing the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE) program.

More than two million tourist arrivals have been recorded in the first four months of the year, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said.

"These numbers, and the accompanying visible increase in economic activities and commerce across our famous destinations, are a testament to the industry's recovery," Marcos said.

"These also prove that the active participation of every stakeholder matters; that one's perseverance to acquire more skills, know-how, and networks makes a difference in our tourism agenda. At the same time, these numbers pose a challenge for us to translate these gains into tangible benefits – benefits for our people, our communities and our economy," he added.

In 2023, the DOT recorded 5.5 million inbound tourists, the PCO said, which is 15% higher than the 4.8 million target for the year.

Marcos also highlighted the contribution of the private sector to the country's tourism industry, which has made the Philippine destinations stand out from others.

"To the exemplary industry leaders, content creators, and key players who are making an impact in the tourism community: You are serving your country well with your exceptional work. "Ladies and gentlemen, let us continue this partnership between the government and the private sector, working together to support our MSMEs, including those catering to the needs of the tourism industry," he added.

Marcos urged the private sector "to bring the rewards of a thriving tourism industry directly to the Filipino people" as he reminded them to always keep in mind the need to protect the environment, to care for all people, and to utilize the resources with great prudence.
