New permits to enter Columbia Gorge's 'waterfall corridor' begin. Here's how it works

sasquatch waterfall tour

A permit system that will limit how people visit the most popular waterfall hikes in Oregon goes into effect this week, the latest in a series of statewide actions meant to combat skyrocketing crowds and parking congestion around the state’s most beautiful places.

The latest system requires visitors to obtain a “timed use permit” to drive into the Columbia Gorge’s waterfall corridor on the historic highway between Bridal Veil (via exit 28 from Interstate 84) and Ainsworth State Park (exit 35).

The permits, which can be purchased at Recreation.gov two weeks in advance of a visit, are required between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from May 24 to Sept. 5. They’ll be required to reach popular spots such as Multnomah Falls, Horsetail Falls and Oneonta Trail.

Get outside: 10 great Western Oregon backpacking trips for younger kids

The permits, now on sale, provide a one-hour window for people to enter through blockades set up on both sides of the Columbia River Gorge Historic Highway.

For example, on the website, each permit is $2 and allows picking an entry time between 9-10 a.m., 10-11 a.m. and so on through 6 p.m. each day.

The permit doesn’t require visitors to leave by any specific time, only to enter during their allotted hour. If they leave the permit area and try to reenter, they’d need to get a different permit.

Areas outside the permit area — such as Latourell Falls or Vista House in the west or Eagle Creek Trail to the east — do not require the timed permit and would be the same situation as in previous years.

“Everybody knows how big a problem traffic congestion is in this part of the Gorge and this is a pilot program to see how well it works,” Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Don Hamilton said. “At the end of the summer, we’ll look at whether this is an effective tool for the long-term. We know something has to be done, and this is what we’re starting with.”

Those riding shuttles, such as the Sasquatch Shuttle or Gray Line Waterfall Trolly, won’t need the permit. The same is true for anyone on a bike. And anyone who arrives before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m. will be waved through.

Officials stressed that just buying the timed permit doesn’t guarantee a parking spot — it’s possible that the limited number of Gorge parking spots could be snapped up by early birds arriving before 9 a.m.

“We don’t know if that will be a problem — whether that $2 fee is enough to dramatically change people’s patterns of behaviors,” Hamilton said. “We’ll just have to see how it goes.”

In addition to the timed permit entry system for the historic highway, those planning to visit Multnomah Falls from the I-84 parking lot — from exit 31 — will also need a “timed-use” permit .

“The permits are two separate systems and are not interchangeable,” the Forest Service said in a news release.

Permits that limit entry have become an increasingly common tool used by land management agencies who’ve seen skyrocketing crowds fueled by the state’s rising population and supercharged by the COVID-19 pandemic.

New permits have become required for Oregon's three most popular wilderness areas — the Three Sisters, Mount Jefferson and Mount Washington — along with popular wildflower hikes like Dog Mountain and popular rivers such as the John Day and Rogue rivers.

In detail: How will the Gorge timed use permit system work?

  • All personal vehicles using the Waterfall Corridor to access the Columbia Gorge lands will need a timed use permit seven days a week between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. from just east of the Bridal Veil off-ramp (Exit 28) to Ainsworth State Park (Exit 35) from May 24 through Sept. 5, 2022.
  • The permits will be available online, at Recreation.gov , for a $2 transaction fee. Permits will be released approximately two weeks prior to the visit date. There will also be a limited amount of in-person, same-day permits (no fee) at locations such as the Gateway to the Gorge Visitor Center in Troutdale and the Cascade Locks Historical Museum.
  • Each permit lists a time slot. Arrive at either end of the Waterfall Corridor at one of two check-in points (just east of the Bridal Veil off-ramp at Exit 28 or Exit 35 at Ainsworth State Park) any time during your time slot. If you arrive after your permit time slot, please consider going by public transit, tour or bike instead.
  • Once you arrive, you can stay as long as you like.
  • Parking is not guaranteed anywhere along the waterfall corridor. Only park in marked parking spots.

Options for visiting the waterfall corridor without a permit

  • Leave your car at home and take public transit (Columbia Area Transit), including service from Gateway Transit Center in Portland, Cascade Locks and Hood River.
  • Take a tour: Sasquatch Shuttle and Gray Line Waterfall Trolley service the waterfall corridor with hop-on, hop-off shuttles.
  • Get out into that fresh air and ride your bike along the route.
  • Modify the timing of your trip to before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
  • Plan your visit to the Waterfall Corridor prior to Memorial Day or after Labor Day, when there is less visitation demand.

For more information on the system, visit www.WaterfallCorridorPermits.org

To get a permit, visit:  recreation.gov/timed-entry/10089144/ticket/10089150 .

Katrina Yentch is a freelance journalist, editor, and copywriter living in Portland. When she isn't writing, she's either napping and cooking in the winter or paddling and backpacking during the summer.

Imagine a night camping in the woods. Do you share stories about Bigfoot sightings or other mysterious, unexplainable creatures? Well, picture those stories brought to life at the North American Bigfoot Center in Boring, Oregon, just 24 miles (38km) from Portland. And no, this doesn’t mean that Bigfoot is on display to prove that they’re alive and thriving (although there is an extremely realistic statue) — but by the end of your visit, you may well be convinced that Bigfoot is out there, presiding over forests across the world.

Why the Pacific Northwest Loves Bigfoot

The unexplainable existence of an ape-like monster in the woods has long been the subject of entertainment and folklore worldwide, but his presence is highly celebrated in the Pacific Northwest. Many locals consider Bigfoot, also affectionately known as Sasquatch, the region’s unofficial mascot, an enigmatic muse for art and outdoor culture. It isn’t uncommon to see camper vans on the highway sporting bumper stickers of the ape-shaped figure. Or to walk into coffee shops and adventure outfitters with paintings of Bigfoot prancing amid mountain peaks, the cryptid considered a peaceful symbol in the landscape.

The collection is a culmination of the 30 years that Barackman has spent tracing Bigfoot’s existence; putting it together for the museum took six months.

Researching Bigfoot

Animal Planet’s Finding Bigfoot host Cliff Barackman opened the North American Bigfoot Center with his wife Melissa at the base of Mount Hood in 2019. The location, in the town of Boring , is considered a hot spot for Sasquatch sightings. The museum’s exhibits range from narrative witness accounts to dozens of foot casts and photographic evidence. The collection is a culmination of the 30 years that Barackman has spent tracing Bigfoot’s existence; putting it together for the museum took six months. Like many museums, the center also serves as a research center for behind-the-scenes work conducted by various Bigfoot believers and scientists.

“I’m out there on expeditions at least once or twice a week,” confirms Nico Spadafora , lead researcher and manager at the Bigfoot Center. Spadafora’s background in paleontology has served him well in providing much of the data and artifacts on display. “We’ve even closed down the shop to research when someone drops us a tip.” Due to the constant research, exhibits and findings are updated throughout the year.

Evidence, Not Facts

It’s important to note that a Sasquatch has never actually been captured. And so, because the museum is largely based on research findings, you won’t find a lot of hard facts about Bigfoot. There aren’t videos demonstrating its common behaviors, charts detailing what it eats daily, or pointers on spotting one yourself. Instead, you will read hypotheses about the creature with extremely convincing evidence.

For example, on two expeditions completed within the same year, researchers noticed new footprints in the same area, implying that Bigfoot — like many of us — is a creature of habit. “We don’t know for sure, but there are signs that suggest he’s habitual,” Spadafora says of the discovery. Scientists also claim to have noticed a pattern in Bigfoot’s diet and means of capturing prey. “While cougars kill their prey by suffocation, and bears mangle the animal to death, Sasquatch tends to break an animal’s neck with a swift, clean motion,” he explains. Researchers seek out animals killed in this manner to determine what a Sasquatch may be eating.

Inside the North American Bigfoot Center

Barackman and his team have organized the North American Bigfoot Center so that you can explore any part of it without getting lost. One section consists of a collection of hand and foot casts, differentiating Sasquatches from humans to dispel any doubts about the marks they have left behind. Another part of the museum shares the stories, myths and legends of ape-like humanoids worldwide, from Texas to Vietnam and Tibet.

There are also plenty of interactive experiences to bring the legend to life despite Bigfoot’s physical absence in the museum. You can “smell” what a Bigfoot reeks of, hear its roars and sounds through recordings, and watch documentary footage and fictional movie clips. Plenty of donated Bigfoot art decorates the museum, like skateboards and beer cans covered in Bigfoot cartoons, sculptures and, of course, a life-size representation of Bigfoot himself.

The North American Bigfoot Center Store is filled with goodies that help visitors show off their belief and pride in the lovable monster. With welcome mats, clothing, stickers, toys and mugs, the team has stocked the physical and online store for a full shopping spree dedicated to Sasquatch.

Portland’s Weirdest Events

Portland comes by its eclectic reputation honestly. From quirky to downright bizarre, here are some of our favorite "Keep Portland Weird" events.

Bigfoot Activities and Events

Although the Bigfoot Center’s expeditions are reserved for its researchers, plenty of independent Bigfoot seekers visit the museum to inquire about their findings. For this reason, the museum supplies a handful of tracking guides in the gift shop to help other searchers.

The museum also hosts a crowd-funded community for Bigfoot enthusiasts on Patreon , informing members of the most up-to-date findings. The public can learn about the team’s research through Facebook or Instagram .

The Portland Spirit hosts Bigfoot Cruises for those who want to experience the forests of Sasquatch’s natural environment. Sailing through the Columbia River Gorge , the tour guides on these high-speed jet boats have plenty of insight to share about the waters he lives on — along with some help from narrated recordings by Cliff Barackman.

Getting to the Gorge

Clouds floating over the Columbia River Gorge at twilight

The Columbia River Gorge is an outdoor paradise, with popular sightseeing along the Historic Columbia River Highway, fantastic waterfalls to experience and seemingly endless opportunities to experience the best of Oregon’s natural amenities.

The remote nature of The Gorge means Troutdale is the last place for services, from gassing up the car to finalizing trip plans. To assist, Troutdale is home to the Gateway to the Gorge Visitor Center , where you will find knowledgeable experts and reliable resources to help make a trip to The Gorge enjoyable and relaxing!

Due to the popularity of The Gorge, visitors should plan their trip carefully, to maximize their time while reducing the impact on the environment. Troutdale offers individuals, families and groups the chance to make the most of their excursion.

Then we’ll be heading to the village of Coombs for a chance to spot the famous goats on the roof of the Old Country Market.  Then, it’s the East Coast for us as we head down to Chemainus with its 39 giant outdoor murals for a little Al Fresco art appreciation.  You’ll also get a chance to snap the world’s largest (ice) hockey stick! (only in Canada, eh?) This evening we’ll be staying in the BC provincial capital, Victoria, where you can enjoy the buzzing Inner Harbour night scene.

Victoria to Vancouver

Today’s a day for history! We will begin our day with a walking tour starting in Victoria’s Chinatown, then make our way along the Inner Harbour to see the Empress Hotel, Parliament Buildings and learn about the Black Pioneers that arrived from San Francisco in 1858. Then we’ll head to Beacon Hill Park – known as the crowning jewel in Victoria’s park system, to gaze at the Terry Fox Memorial, and the world’s tallest free-standing totem pole. After that, the day is yours to explore Victoria as you wish, although we highly recommend checking out the vibrant Fisherman’s Wharf. We’ll then congregate to take another scenic ferry through the Gulf Islands, across the Salish Sea and back to Vancouver.

Moose Accommodation: HI Vancouver – Jericho Beach

Vancouver to Whistler

Have your camera ready for an amazing journey today! We’ll travel the breath-taking Sea to Sky Highway, past mountain peaks, glaciers, and stunning lakes, stopping off at two waterfalls, Shannon Falls and Brandywine Falls. Upon our arrival in Whistler, we’ll take a guided tour of the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre including a forest walk with a Cultural Ambassador, to learn about the Indigenous cultures of the Whistler Valley. We bet you’ll be hungry after this jam-packed day, so we’ll be dining together this evening. After that, check out Whistler’s nightlife scene or give axe throwing a go! (And yes, Canada hosts a World Axe Throwing League.)

Activity Inclusions: Guided tour of Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre

Moose Accommodation: HI Whistler

Whistler to Vancouver

Ziplining, bungee jumping, mountain biking and hiking; these are just some of the things you could be doing today!  We don’t leave until the afternoon, giving you plenty of time to explore Whistler village or the mountains.  Alternatively, find a quiet spot in one of the beautiful parks and take in some raw unadulterated nature, before we head back to Vancouver, stopping en route for another photo opportunity!

Moose Accommodation: HI Vancouver – Downtown

Vancouver to Kelowna

The desert is calling! Today we’re going east through the Fraser Valley, where we’ll take a short walk through a West Coast rainforest to Bridal Veil Falls. Then, we’ll traverse the Coastal Mountains, stopping at Lightning Lake in Manning Park at lunchtime. The semi-arid desert grasslands of the Okanagan are next on our itinerary, where we’ll go paddle boarding on the beautiful Skaha Lake. We’ll be replenishing ourselves with a special dinner at Kekuli Café in Westbank, where you’ll get to try Indigenous cuisine, before settling in for the night on Lake Okanagan in Kelowna.

Activity Inclusions: Paddle boarding on Skaha Lake

Meal inclusions: Indigenous cuisine dinner

Kelowna to Banff

Being a little greedy with mountain ranges today, crossing not one, not two – but three of them, as we travel through four National Parks towards Banff!  We’ll stop in Revelstoke where you can go lake kayaking or simply enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery.  Finally we’ll enter the Rocky Mountains and cross over the Kicking Horse Pass into Alberta and Banff National Park, spending the night in the historic town of Banff itself, right in the heart of the mountains.

Note: during May and from mid-September onwards, we will cross over the Vermillion Pass to enter Alberta and Banff National Park.

Meal Inclusions: Breakfast at Samesun Kelowna

Moose Accommodation: HI Banff

Banff to Rampart Creek

It’s time to visit those famous blue lakes! Lake Louise is calling, as is Moraine Lake (seasonal) before heading onto the Icefields Parkway for breath-taking views of jagged mountain peaks, glaciers, raging rivers and more turquoise lakes.  Keep your eyes peeled for large furry animals as we make stops at the Crowfoot Glacier, Peyto Lake (our favourite) and Mistaya Canyon before arriving at our rustic wilderness hostel alongside Rampart Creek. We invite you to really take in your surroundings with a dip and a sauna, and perhaps a campfire under the stars.

Moose Accommodation: HI Rampart Creek.

Rampart Creek offers a truly rustic wilderness experience and is the only accommodation available – we’re sure you’ll love it!

Rampart Creek to Jasper

Jasper National Park today! But first we’ll stop at Big Bend lookout for a great view of the U-shaped North Saskatchewan River Valley. Get your legs ready because next up is the Columbia Icefield, the largest ice field in the Rocky Mountains at 325 square kilometres, where we’ll hike to the toe of the Athabasca Glacier (conditions permitting.) Then on to Maligne Canyon, the deepest canyon in Jasper National Park, for a hike that crosses several bridges over the canyon with jaw-dropping views. Jasper townsite is our destination, and if you’re seeking an adrenaline rush, there is an option to take a guided mountain bike tour on arrival.

Moose Accommodation: HI Jasper

Jasper to Banff

Our first stop: Athabasca Falls, one of the most powerful and picturesque in the Rockies! This is followed by a bit of mountain goat spotting (we’re still amazed at how they hold on) at the Goats and Glaciers viewpoint. Then on to Waterfowl Lakes to soak in the backdrop of Mount Chephren, which was named after the 4th Dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh. Our tour ends after a group dinner back in Banff.

Meal inclusions: Dinner

Moose Accommodation: There is no accommodation included tonight. You will need to make your own arrangements. We recommend that you do not book onward travel on this day in case of traffic or weather delays.

The Sasquatch tour through Western Canada offers adrenaline seekers every adventure activity you chould imagine: bungee jumping, ziplining, mountain biking, whitewater rafting and more. Moose offers dozens of options to soak in the scenery in a more relaxed way, like whale watching, hot springs or riding the Peak to Peak gondola for incredible mountain vistas. (Note: some of the activities below are only available after finishing the tour in Banff).

Optional activities are booked and paid through your Moose tour guide while on the tour. No need to pre-book! The following optional activities are available on this tour:

sasquatch waterfall tour

On the accommodated tour option, accommodation is included for all nights of the tour, in mixed gender, hostel dormitory rooms. Please note that you can request female only dorm rooms, and this is usually possible to accommodate, but we cannot guarantee it.

Most travellers book the accommodated tour option because it provides the best value for your money since we receive discounts from our accommodation providers that aren’t available to the general public. We choose hostels for their budget value, as well as offering great facilities and a warm, friendly atmosphere. By staying in shared dorm rooms you get a chance to meet more people, hang out with other tour guests, and keep the price as low as possible.

Not Interested in Staying in Shared Hostel Dorm Accommodation?

If you’d prefer to book your own accommodation, to stay in private rooms or in alternative properties, check out the non-accommodated version of this tour by clicking here .

sasquatch waterfall tour

The Sasquatch is a combination of our Island Explorer, Sea to Sky and Coho tours. There will be travellers joining and leaving your tour in Vancouver and Banff at various times. After you finish in Banff, many travellers will continue back to Vancouver.

All tour finish times are approximate. We strongly recommend that you DO NOT book onward travel on the final day of the tour, since traffic or other unexpected circumstances may cause delays.

Please note that our itineraries can change and/or activities can be cancelled without notice as a result of circumstances beyond our control, such as weather, traffic and unforeseen events. If this does occur, there may be alternatives available, or you may get to enjoy more free time to explore on your own!

Some sites on this tour are only available seasonally. Moraine Lake is only accessible from late May until mid-October. If you want to visit this site, please choose a departure within the appropriate date range.

This tour finishes in Banff. The closest airport is in Calgary (YYC).

If you’re flexible about when you can travel, consider the pros and cons of our travel seasons. In Low Season, you’ll get the BEST VALUE on our tours, there’s less traffic, and far fewer people at the most popular sites. The trade off is that the weather is typically more variable, cooler and wetter. Plus, a few sites may be closed, and the glacial lakes may still be frozen in the spring, although that’s also beautiful! In Peak Season, everything is open, the weather is more consistent, warmer and generally drier, and the glacial lakes are in their full glory. However, our tours cost more, traffic is busier, and the most popular locations on our itineraries can be very busy.

We take your safety, and the safety of our staff and partners very seriously. Click here for more information.

Frequently Asked Quesions

Please reach us at [email protected] if you cannot find an answer to your question.

No. Although it can be calming to plan ahead, it is not a requirement. Tickets may be purchased on site using card or cash. Waterfall Loop tickets can sell out early so early purchase is recommended. The Multnomah Falls Express is FREE and parking is best paid upon arrival.

No. When you ride or park with Sasquatch Shuttle you do not need a timed use reservation.

Yes. Sasquatch Shuttle is pet friendly to all well behaved animal companions.

Specializing in spontaneity, Sasquatch is an unpredictable individual. He has been known to hop on board and ride with us, as well as emerge from the bushes to snap a few pictures… Yet, he is never on a set schedule. You will have to see if he turns up during your visit?!

The bus ride from the Sasquatch lot to Multnomah Falls and visa versa is approximately 10-12 minutes.

Last bus pickup is at 5pm. The bus may come by later but we expect guests to be at the closest stop by 5pm to insure they catch the last bus. Pickups may be slightly after 5pm as the bus travels back to the lot with traffic.

A dually truck, sprinter van, Class B RV, any vehicle with a trailer, large RV, semi truck, bus, 15 passenger van are considered to be oversized and required the purchase of an oversized parking permit. This list is not all inclusive so if in doubt please ask. Oversized vehicles are not allowed in the Multnomah Falls lot, only in the Bridal Veil Lot.

We do have one shuttle that can accommodate ADA access. Please contact us 48 hours prior to your arrival so we can plan to have that particular shuttle available for you on the given day. Also please use the visitor guide from Accessible Gorge for great ADA information on the sites along the waterfall corridor.

The Waterfall Loop allows you to see multiple waterfalls and sights with narration and gives you a much bigger experience. The Multnomah Falls Express gets you to the busiest natural site in the State of Oregon with ease and speed. Both options allow you to park simply and ride comfortably.
