Beach in Cancún, Mexico.

Four found dead in Mexico’s Cancún beach resort

No immediate information on nationalities or identities in latest violence to hit popular holiday destination

Four dead bodies have been found near a beach in the Mexican resort city of Cancún, in the latest incident of violence to hit the popular holiday destination.

There was no immediate information on the nationalities or identities of the victims. The announcement of the deaths came less that a week after a US tourist was shot in the leg in the nearby town of Puerto Morelos.

Prosecutors originally said three bodies were found on Monday in a lot near one of Cancún’s beachside hotels along the Kukulkan Boulevard. They then added that a fourth body was found in the undergrowth on the same lot, bringing to four the number of victims.

Prosecutors in the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo said two suspects had been detained in the killings. They said the deaths were under investigation, but did not give a cause of death.

Last week in Puerto Morelos, a US tourist was approached by several suspects, and they shot him in the leg. The motive remains under investigation. The wounded man was taken to a hospital in Cancún for treatment, and his injury was judged to be not life-threatening.

The US state department issued a travel alert earlier this month warning travelers to “exercise increased caution”, especially after dark, at Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts like Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, which have been plagued by drug gang violence in the past.

Cancún and the Mayan Riviera to its south, are the crown jewels of Mexico’s tourism industry, attracting millions of tourists each year.

But the region has been plagued by violence as drug cartels dispute extortion rackets and local drug markets.

In 2022, two Canadians were killed in Playa del Carmen, apparently because of debts between international drug and weapons trafficking gangs .

In 2021, farther south in the laid-back destination of Tulum, two tourists – one a California travel blogger born in India and the other German – were killed when they apparently were caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between rival drug dealers.

4 tourists die in Mexico shipwreck between Cancún and Isla Mujeres

Four people have died and over a dozen were rescued in the shipwreck of a small boat carrying tourists between Isla Mujeres and Cancún, two vacation hot spots in Mexico, on Monday night.

A total of 19 people — 17 tourists from Mexico, the captain, and a helper — were on board the small boat, Raciel López Salazar, the attorney general of Quintana Roo state, told reporters Tuesday.

The boat, called Diosa del Mar — which translates to “Goddess of the Sea” — was from Puerto Juárez. It “wrecked” in the bay between Isla Mujeres and Cancún, the Isla Mujeres city council said in a news release . Isla Mujeres is about 3.5 miles off Cancún.

Four Mexican tourists died after a boat carrying 19 people capsized or swamped between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, authorities said Tuesday.

The boat was returning to Cancún from Isla Mujeres. It's not clear whether it capsized or sank somehow.

The captain survived and was taken into custody, the city council said.

Investigators from the state of Quintana Roo are investigating whether the boat had the capacity to hold 19 people and whether `weather played a role in the incident.

“We are analyzing the climatological conditions, the capacity of the boat and to see if the boat had the capacity to transport 19 people, and the condition of the equipment on the boat. There are people who are responsible for this, we have the captain detained,” Salazar told reporters.

Asked about the captain, he stressed that the investigation continues but said, “I can tell you that he had some responsibility.”

Four Mexican tourists died after a boat carrying 19 people capsized or swamped between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, authorities said Tuesday.

Quintana Roo’s state coordination of civil protection department  tweeted Monday evening that a boat search-and-rescue operation was carried out in Isla Mujeres with the help of local agencies and the Mexican navy and that some of the people who were rescued were receiving medical attention.

H igh waves were reported in the area Monday night, and local media reported that the wake of a larger passing vessel may have played a role. The passage between Isla Mujeres and Cancún is notably busy, full of ferries and pleasure craft, many carrying tourists.

Officials said three bodies were found on Monday in an area along Kukulkan Boulevard, near one of Cancún’s beachside hotels.

A fourth body was found in the undergrowth on the same lot.

Reports said there was no clarification on the identities of the four victims.

Investigators have not attributed any cause to the deaths so far. Prosecutors from Mexico’s Quintana Roo, however, said two suspects had been detained.

This comes just a few days after an American tourist was shot in the leg in the nearby town of Puerto Morelos.

US state and federal officials had earlier in March issued warnings to Americans travelling to Mexico for the spring break, citing escalating violence in the region.

The US State Department issued an alert on 13 March advising potential travellers to be aware of the risk of violent crime, drugs, unregulated alcohol and sexual assault.

“Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations,” it read.

“Travellers should maintain a high level of situational awareness, avoid areas where illicit activities occur, and promptly depart from potentially dangerous situations.

“US citizens should exercise increased caution in the downtown areas of popular spring break locations including Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum , especially after dark,” it added.

In a separate incident, a group of American tourists was taken hostage on 3 March after entering the state of Tamaulipas in Matamoros – an area dominated by Mexico’s Gulf cartel .

It was later reported that two Americans in a group of four friends who were kidnapped during a trip to Mexico were found dead.

The Americans, who had driven from South Carolina, came under fire from a group of armed men and were bundled into the back of a pickup truck.

Tamaulipas governor Américo Villarreal revealed on a call during a Tuesday evening press conference that two of the victims, Shaeed Woodard and Zindell Brown, had been found dead.

Eric James Williams was wounded on his leg while LaTavia “Tay” McGee was unharmed – they are back in the US, according to the Tamaulipas Attorney General.

The US officials familiar with the investigation were quoted as saying by CNN that authorities believe a Mexican cartel mistook the victims for Haitian drug smugglers.

American Couple’s Trip to Cancun Ends in a Horrific Hotel Room Death

The family of Sativa Transue, a 26-year-old American woman from Spokane, Washington who was found dead in her Cancun hotel room while on vacation with her boyfriend, said she looked like she had been “beaten to a bloody pulp” when Mexican authorities discovered her body on Saturday.

“I received a call from the Mexican consulate letting me know my daughter has passed away and that she’s been found dead,” Jayme Bolieu, Sativa’s mother, told The Daily Beast in an interview. “How could my beautiful healthy daughter be gone? In another country? It took my breath away. A part of me died. She was my baby. I had her at 16. We grew up together. She was my life, my reason for living, my best friend.”

Beloved Georgia Teacher Found Dead on Mexico Roadside, Boyfriend Charged

Sativa’s mother and sister are still trying to make sense of what happened that Friday night and Saturday morning. They told The Daily Beast that Sativa had been texting them throughout the trip: “She was enjoying the sunshine and her trip was going okay, but not the best, because they [Sativa and her boyfriend] were fighting,” Mykayla, her 21-year-old sister, told The Daily Beast. On Saturday morning, Jayme had woken up to frantic texts from her daughter’s friends saying they were worried about Sativa after exchanging messages with her the night before.

"Sativa Transue, right."

"Sativa Transue, right."

“Apparently, [Sativa’s boyfriend] was threatening to jump off a four-story balcony,” on Friday, Jayme told The Daily Beast. “Sativa was injured and had to have stitches.”

In a statement to The Daily Beast, a State Department official said: “We can confirm the death of a U.S. citizen, Sativa Transue, in Mexico. We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss. The safety and welfare of U.S. citizens overseas is the highest priority of the Department of State. We are closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death and are providing the family all appropriate consular assistance.”

Local media reports allege that Sativa’s partner has been arrested in connection with the incident, but multiple efforts by The Daily Beast to reach Mexican authorities for comment on the status of the investigation were unsuccessful, and for that reason, The Daily Beast is not releasing the name of the alleged suspect at this time. The boyfriend’s mother and other family members did not respond to efforts to reach them by phone by the time of publication.

On Monday, a Twitter account linked to Cancun law enforcement released a blurred-out mugshot of the alleged suspect wearing what appears to be a hotel bathrobe, saying he had been arrested for the crime of femicide. Responding to news of the arrest, the State Department official told The Daily Beast in an email that “We are aware of reports of an arrest, and are monitoring the investigation closely. Due to privacy considerations, we have no further comment at this time.”

Jayme told The Daily Beast that her aunt had gone to Mexico as the family’s advocate, saying she couldn’t bear to go through the process herself. It was there where Mexican authorities shared a photo of Sativa’s body with her aunt. “My aunt is down there now and has seen the pictures and said she looked like she was beaten to death,” Jayme said.

Tourists Panic After Armed Gang Opens Fire at Upscale Cancun Resort

According to Jayme and Mykayla, Sativa’s relationship with her boyfriend was troubled. “He was very emotionally abusive. He checked her phone, and we couldn’t text her because it went to her computer and he would check that,” Jayme said.

Public records show that the alleged suspect has been previously arrested for assault in the fourth degree back in 2012. “He would drink so much that she [Sativa] called it like a different personality. She would call it [his] ‘Beast,’” Mykayla told The Daily Beast.

For now, Sativa’s family is still reeling from the shock of the news that rocked their lives over the weekend.

“She was the best person in my entire life. She was kind, generous, outgoing, bubbly. She never met a person who could say a bad word about her,” Mykayla told The Daily Beast. “I don’t know who I am without her... I just feel so lost.”

Arrests made in Cancun after 5 dismembered bodies found in taxi, 3 other victims dumped in shallow grave

February 13, 2024 / 6:34 AM EST / CBS/AP

Prosecutors said Monday they have arrested six members of a drug gang in the Mexican resort of Cancun that allegedly killed and hacked up five people with a machete, and dumped three other victims in a shallow grave.

Authorities said that five dismembered bodies were found inside a taxi on January 29 and three bodies were later found in a grave, one of which has been identified.

The gang, which prosecutors say also engaged in extortion, was protected by a network of motorcycle taxis and minors who acted as lookouts. Authorities said two minors were arrested in addition to the six alleged gang members.

Authorities also announced the arrest of 23 people on charges they operated a fake tour agency that served as a cover for drug sales in Cancun.

The suspects operated a call center in which they offered sports equipment and tour packages to tourists, but then failed to deliver them. On the second floor they had a complex operation in which drug deals were allegedly made over the phone and delivered by motorcycle. Authorities conducting a search of the property allegedly found marijuana, methamphetamines, cell phones, bank cards, laptops and seven motorcycles.

Another suspect was arrested in Cancun who allegedly both ordered drugs on social media sites - which were delivered to him by express package service - and sold them also on social media, with home delivery included.

The revelations Monday came one day after prosecutors confirmed an American woman and a man from Belize were shot to death late last week in what appears to have been a dispute between drug dealers at a beach club in the resort city of Tulum, south of Cancun.

Prosecutors in Quintana Roo stressed the American woman had no connection to an alleged drug dealer also killed in the shooting Friday night. The woman appeared to have simply been caught in the crossfire.

Prosecutors said the dead man had cocaine and pills in his possession when he was killed, and was believed to be a dealer. They said the suspects in the shootings had been identified and were being sought.

Violence persists on Caribbean coast

The degree to which drugs are available in Mexico's Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo is sometimes startling.

Last year, authorities shuttered 23 pharmacies at Caribbean coast resorts, six months after a research report warned that drug stores in Mexico were offering foreigners pills they passed off as Oxycodone, Percocet and Adderall without prescriptions.

Foreign tourists have been killed in the past after getting caught in drug gang shootouts in the once-tranquil beach resort.

In 2021 in Tulum, two tourists - one German and a California travel blogger born in India - were killed while eating at a restaurant. They apparently were caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between rival drug dealers.

Last April, eight bodies were found dumped in Cancun. Just days before that,  four men in Cancun were killed  in a dispute related to drug gang rivalries. The dead men were found in the city's hotel zone near the beach.

Last year, the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert warning travelers to "exercise increased situational awareness" especially after dark, at Mexico's Caribbean beach resorts like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Tourists, however, continue to stream into Mexico's Caribbean coast, the country's leading tourist destination. Mexico's tourism department released figures Monday showing foreign tourists spent almost $31 billion in all of Mexico in 2023, up 10% from 2022. About half of all foreigners visiting Mexico go to Cancun.

Authorities said they were trying to identify eight bodies found dumped in the Mexican resort area of Cancun.

Oscar Montes de Oca , attorney general of Quintana Roo, said Tuesday that police found the bodies during weekend searches in wooded lots and sinkhole ponds, according to The Associated Press . He said authorities estimated they were dumped there anywhere from one week to two months ago.

The head prosecutor of the Mexican state pledged to carry out more searches and identifications.

Five bodies were found at an abandoned building site, Monte de Oca said, according to the AP. Three of them were identified as already reported missing persons. At another site in a wooded area on the outskirts of Cancun, he said, authorities found unidentified human skeletal remains belonging to three other people.

Is Mexico travel safe?  What to know about visiting Cabo, Cancun, Playa del Carmen and more

The bodies were found in a poor neighborhood about 10 miles from Cancun's beach and hotel zone, in an area close to the local airport.

Officials said similar searches were carried out in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a town south of Tulum, on the coastline of the country's Yucatan Peninsula.

Volunteers, including some relatives of the missing, and search dogs joined investigators on the searches.

After releasing a statement earlier on social media that disputed details surrounding the discovery of the bodies, the prosecutor's office confirmed the report to USA TODAY.

Thousands of missing people

According to a national database , more than 112,000 people are listed as missing in Mexico. Searches for clandestine grave sites have become common throughout the country. What is unusual is that they are now being carried out in Cancun, the crown jewel of Mexico’s tourism industry.

Dumping grounds are often used by drug cartels to dispose of victims. Several cartels are fighting for control of the Caribbean coast and its lucrative retail drug trade.

Travel alert warning

In March, the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert warning visitors to exercise caution, especially after dark, at resorts including Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

The warning came in the wake of the  kidnapping of four Americans  in Mexico earlier this month. U.S. and Mexican authorities said the group was traveling for cosmetic surgery  when they got caught in a drug cartel shootout in the border city of Matamoros in Tamaulipas state, south of Brownsville, Texas. Two of the Americans were killed.

The State Department had posted a Level 4: Do Not Travel advisory for when they were kidnapped, citing crime and kidnapping in the region.

Mexico Cancun: British tourist, 58, found dead in pool of blood in hotel room with wife found beside him rushed to hospital

A British tourist, 58, has been found dead in a pool of blood in his hotel room in Cancun, Mexico with his wife beside him

A British tourist, 58, has been found dead in a pool of blood in his hotel room in Mexico. Detectives raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at a city hotel in the resort of Cancun just after 5am local time yesterday morning (Tuesday 16 April).

His 53-year-old wife was found beside him with cuts to her arms and was taken to hospital. According to The Mirror, unconfirmed reports say she may have been under the effects of an unknown substance. The paper adds that sources close to the ongoing investigation said she had now been released and the cuts were not “deep ones”.

Initial unconfirmed reports pointed to a possible crime of passion. The man found dead is said to have been discovered with a broken bottle between his legs and blood around the room as well as on his arms and chest.

Local prosecutors said in their first official comments an investigation is still ongoing but they are currently treating the incident as a possible suicide pact which ended with only the husband taking his own life. No arrests are thought to have been made but her current whereabouts are not known.

Some Mexican local newspapers started reporting yesterday that the case was being treated as a homicide and the dead man’s wife was a suspect. Last night prosecutors distanced themselves from the idea the death was linked to a crime in their first official statement on the incident.

Sources confirmed both the dead man and his wife were British. A spokesman for the Attorney General’s office in the state of Quintana Roo, which Cancun is part of, said: “After receiving reports a foreign tourist had died in a hotel in the municipality of Benito Juarez, an investigation was launched to clarify what had happened. The initial lines of investigation are pointing to this tragic incident being a possible suicide, in which two people had the intention of ending their lives.”

The spokesman added: “There is currently close co-operation with the consulate to offer the support the families involved need.” For mental health support, contact the Samaritans on 116 123, email them at [email protected] or visit samaritans.org to find your nearest branch.

The suspects operated a call center in which they offered sports equipment and tour packages to tourists, but then failed to deliver them. On the second floor they had a complex operation in which drug deals were allegedly made over the phone and delivered by motorcycle.

Another suspect was arrested in Cancun who allegedly both ordered drugs on social media sites — which were delivered to him by express package service — and sold them also on social media, with home delivery included.

The degree to which drugs are available in Mexico’s Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo is sometimes startling.

In 2021 in Tulum, two tourists — one German and a California travel blogger born in India — were killed while eating at a restaurant . They apparently were caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between rival drug dealers.

Last year, the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert warning travelers to “exercise increased situational awareness” especially after dark, at Mexico’s Caribbean beach resorts like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Tourists, however, continue to stream into Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the country’s leading tourist destination. Mexico’s tourism department released figures Monday showing foreign tourists spent almost $31 billion in all of Mexico in 2023, up 10% from 2022. About half of all foreigners visiting Mexico go to Cancun.

At Least 4 Dead After Tourist Boat Carrying 19 People Sinks Near Cancun, Captain Detained

At least four people are dead after a tourist boat that was carrying 19 people sank near Cancun, according to the Associated Press .

The captain of the “Diosa del Mar” was detained, per the outlet.

The boat was traveling to Cancún from Isla Mujeres when it "wrecked in the bay between Isla Mujeres and Cancún, when returning to its place of origin," the Isla Mujeres City Council said in a press release. "We express our solidarity with the families of the victims and with the people who were rescued."

Isla Mujeres is a popular tourist island 3.5 miles from Cancún.

Raciel Lopez Salazar, the Attorney General of Quintana Roo, told reporters Tuesday that there were 17 Mexican tourists and two crew members aboard the vessel, per NBC News .

Authorities are trying to determine whether the boat was overcrowded and if rough weather conditions played a role in the tragedy.

“We are analyzing the climatological conditions, the capacity of the boat and to see if the boat had the capacity to transport 19 people, and the condition of the equipment on the boat. There are people who are responsible for this, we have the captain detained,” Salazar said, per NBC News .

Salazar added that the captain, who has not been identified, "had some responsibility" in the deadly incident.

According to AP, many of the passengers were pulled out of the sea by the Mexican Navy and other agencies.

The rescue operation is still underway, therefore, identities have not been revealed nor have the conditions of those rescued.

A BRITISH man has been found dead in a pool of blood in his hotel room in Mexico.

His 53-year-old wife was found lying beside him with multiple lacerations to both of her arms.

A British man has been found dead in a pool of his own blood in City Express Hotel in Cancun

Detectives raced to the scene after the alarm was raised at City Express Hotel just after 5am local time this morning.

The 58-year-old British tourist found dead in a pool of his own blood is reported to have been found with a broken bottle between his legs.

His wife was quickly rushed to hospital, where it emerged that she may have been under the effects of an unknown substance.

Sources involved in the ongoing investigation have said that the wife has now been released from hospital and that the cuts she sustained were not "deep ones".

No arrests have been made as of yet, although the current whereabouts of the wife are not known.

Local prosecutors have said that an investigation is still ongoing but that they are currently treating the incident as a possible suicide pact which ended with only the husband taking his own life.

A spokesman for the Attorney General’s office in Quintana Roo said: “After receiving reports a foreign tourist had died in a hotel in the municipality of Benito Juarez, an investigation was launched to clarify what had happened.

“The initial lines of investigation are pointing to this tragic incident being a possible suicide, in which two people had the intention of ending their lives.”

“The investigation remains open at this stage despite the initial findings.”

Another said: “The British man’s wife is now out of hospital.”

It is not currently known if the couple were accompanied by other family and friends.
