What Are All The Professional Golf Tours Around The World?

Have you ever stopped to consider just how many professional golf tours there are around the world? There’s actually a lot more than you might think, and while we’re not going to cover all of them, we thought we’d at least cover some of the biggest pro golf tours worldwide right here! Let’s get started.

If we’re going by name recognition alone, the PGA Tour wins hands down. This tournament is one of the most well-known events in the entire sport. The PGA runs all pro golf tournaments throughout the US and North America.

The organization is membership-based, and its members are some of the best golfers in the game. The aim is to expand golf to grow opportunities for domestic and international players.

The LPGA is similar to the PGA, except that it’s for women. The Ladies Professional Golf Association is one of the leading pro golf organizations in the world for women. The events created, hosted, and operated by the LPGA primarily take place within the United States of America. There are 5 annual major championships, and it too is a membership-based organization.

Think of the Korn Ferry tour as a pre-PGA tour. Officially it’s known as a developmental tour for pro golfers who’ve yet to be welcomed into the fold that is the exclusive PGA Tour. It’s an organization for those who've not yet qualified or have qualified but have been unsuccessful at earning enough money to stay at the required levels. Whoever lands in the top 25 spots is granted entry into the PGA membership program for the following season.

Similar to how the Korn Ferry is a pre-curser to the PGA, Symetra is the pre-curser to the LPGA. It’s also known as the ‘Road to the LPGA’ and is open to both amateur and professional female golfers. While Korn Ferry allows the top 25 players entry, Symetra only allows the top 10 players on the money list to join the LPGA with full membership come the following season.

CASTLE ROCK,  Colo. — It’s the third and final leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and there are now just 30 golfers alive in the PGA Tour’s 2024 season.

The were 70 Tour pros who made the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis to kick off the postseason, then 50 at the BMW Championship at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado.

The Tour Championship puts a cap on the season and the winner of the event is also declared the FedEx Cup champion.

The first 17 seasons of the playoff produced 14 different winners with Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019, 2022) and Tiger Woods (2007, 2009) the only golfers to win it more than once.

There were four who played their way in, which meant there were four who dropped out . The biggest riser was the 2024 BMW winner, Keegan Bradley . The top three spots remained unchanged from a week ago. The Tour Championship format uses a “staggered start.”

Here’s the full list of 30 golfers advancing to East Lake in 2024:

What’s The Average Ball Speed Of A PGA Tour Pro?

We take a closer look at the numbers to find out the average speed of the ball after impact at an elite level

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Driver impact shot golf

Let's start by defining what ball speed is. Quite simply, it's the speed of the golf ball immediately after impact.

If you asked a lot of recreational golfers what their average ball speed was, you’d probably get a lot of blank faces – as well as a few responses along the lines of, ‘I'm not sure, but I average around 300 yards.’

Hmm, do you?

Most Tour professionals will know their ball speeds to the nearest 1/2mph, for hitting balls and making marginal gains where they can is all part of the day job.

Some, the forensic types like Bryson DeChambeau , would probably even be able to sketch a graph of how their ball speed has improved since they played college golf.

Bryson DeChambeau ball speed

Bryson DeChambeau winds up for a big drive

DeChambeau has spoken openly in the past about his quest to chase distance gains , and has managed well over 200mph when competing in the World Long Drive Championships.

These crazy numbers, however, are not the norm.

Still, pretty much all elite level golfers work with launch monitor technology, such as Trackman, as it helps them to understand where they are with their swing and what, if any, tweaks they might need to make.

According to Trackman data, the average ball speed, with driver, of a PGA Tour player in 2022 was 167mph.

A look at the 2022/23 ball speed numbers provided by the PGA Tour suggests that that number is now higher.

Cameron Champ

Cameron Champ has been averaging over 190mph for ball speed

Of the 193 players listed, only 27 players average below 167mph, with Cameron Champ producing the fastest average at a fraction over 190mph.

Of course, average ball speed is only a number, and those who can boast a big number don’t necessarily have more titles on their CV.

To start with, we’ve not even talked about driving accuracy here. To put it simply, you could be up with DeChambeau around the 190mph mark, but that’s not going to be much use if you can’t keep the ball on the golf course.

However, those are the stats, and they make for an interesting debate.

What's also interesting is that, according to Trackman data, the average ball speed on the PGA Tour for a 3-wood is around 158mph, which would be higher than most average golfers' driver.

The data also shows that the average carry distance on the PGA Tour with a hybrid (225 yards) beats the average players' total driving distance (216 yards).

PGA pros can carry their hybrid further than the average player's total driving distance (216 yards)

As for the average ball speed of a PGA Tour pro... it's safe to say it’s around the 170mph mark.

St. Petersburg Golf Courses: 7 Area Hot Spots for Golfers

Florida, a playground of surf and golf, has more than 1,250 private and public golf courses. One top city for scenic courses is St. Petersburg located in the Tampa Bay metro. Within the area — where Bob Goalby set the PGA Tour record for most consecutive birdies in the 1961 St. Petersburg Open — lies some of Florida’s finest golfing experiences. See our picks for the top St. Petersburg golf courses and accept the challenge.

St. Petersburg Golf Courses to Test Your Skills

st. petersburg golf courses tampa

TPC Tampa Bay (Lutz, FL)

Named one of the top five golf courses in Florida by Florida Golf Magazine and host to a PGA Tour Champions event for over 20 years, this course awaits just 35 minutes north of downtown St. Pete. Its greens wind through natural wetlands, cypress heads and lagoons, providing a challenging course that allows golfers to play well within their game.

A variety of tees allow the course to be played from 4,990 yards to just under 7,000 yards, with water on almost every hole. But that’s what makes TPC Tampa Bay fun as well as demanding. Fun fact: Former PGA legend Chi Chi Rodriguez consulted on the building of this elite course.

Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club (St. Petersburg, FL)

This St. Pete country club is private and offers summer memberships . Nestled between the southern tip of St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach on Boca Ciega Bay, this 18-hole par-71 course features 6,392 yards of golf from the longest tees.

With 29 courses in Florida to his credit, the late Mark Mahannah designed Isla Del Sol, which opened in 1977. Today, Isla Del Sol’s narrow, condominium-lined fairways and palm trees come into play throughout the course. All 18 holes feature water hazards. For an additional challenge, the course’s signature eighth hole — a 343-yard, par 4 — requires an approach shot over water to an island green.

st petersburg golf best courses

Mainlands Golf Course (Pinellas Park, FL)

This tranquil course lies under the watchful gaze of legendary Uncle Julio, a late 19th-century relative of longtime course owner William A. Blair. On Mainlands Golf Course , golfers can ride 18 holes for just $35, or walk for only $30 per person.

Not far from Pinellas Park, the family-owned and -operated establishment has a well-stocked pro shop in addition to magnificent views and challenging play for every skill level. Most golfers use every club in their bag. In addition, Uncle Julio still shouts out directives from above, like offering half-off greens fees and discounts on golf ball purchases at certain times.

Mangrove Bay (St. Petersburg, FL)

This par-72 municipal layout located on 180 maintained acres in northeast St. Petersburg features 18 holes of championship golf on USGA modified platinum paspalum greens. The course’s mangroves also provide a bounty of bird species for golfers who enjoy watching wildlife.

Mangrove Bay was named among the Top 100 Most Women Friendly Golf Courses by  Golf for Women  magazine. In addition, Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play list ranked Mangrove Bay as a three-star course, lauding the facility as an excellent value. PGA professional golf lessons are available for groups and individuals, and junior golf programs feature lessons for ages 6 to 18.

st pete golf courses florida vacation

Seminole Lake Country Club (Seminole, FL)

This club offers a semi-private facility set among Florida landscaping and views of Long Bayou near the popular vacation communities of Reddington Beach. Seminole Lake Country Club sits on a peninsula surrounded with water on three sides and emits an old Florida feel on its 18-hole, 6,501-yard, from the back tees, layout.

Gentle breezes and birds indicate the presence of the Gulf nearby. The course even has its own family of bald eagles nesting on site. Seminole Lake’s firm and fast greens contain much less grain than traditional Florida Bermuda grass, and the club’s Member for a Day program allows non-club members to experience them first-hand.

Rocky Point Golf Course (Tampa, FL)

Historic Rocky Point, just 20 minutes northeast of St. Petersburg City Hall, was one of the first golf courses in Florida, originally opening in 1911. During World War II, the federal government closed the course and built barracks on the property to house prisoners of war. The grounds were eventually turned over to the city of Tampa in 1953, reopening in 1954 as Rocky Point Golf Course.

Today, the layout provides a fair challenge, with water hazards coming into play on 11 holes and sand bunkers placed throughout. Abundant wildlife teems through the course’s surrounding lakes, which also serve as a bird sanctuary.

And if the mood suits, couples can get married at Rocky Point Golf Course , which offers a wedding golf package.

Bardmoor Golf and Tennis Club (Seminole, FL)

Bardmoor houses broad, generous fairways that invite players to hit past water and other features that add sparkle to a round. Some heavy hitters from the past — Arnold Palmer, Payne Stewart, Fred Couples and Tom Kite, among other PGA Tour greats — competed here back in 1977 to 1989.

A renovation by Gary Koch brought Bardmoor’s overall conditions up to excellent. The club sports Tif-Eagle greens that rival tour status, state-of-the-art practice facilities, an award-winning shop, and personal service completes a great golfing experience. In addition, an event venue features a stylish ballroom and outdoor patio accommodates up to 200 guests, making Bardmoor an attractive option for corporate meetings and social events.

Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu, Lauren Coughlin, Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang, Andrea Lee qualify via U.S. Solheim Cup Team points standings

Rose Zhang, Alison Lee qualify via Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings

ST ANDREWS, Scotland (Aug. 25, 2024) – With the completion of the 2024 AIG Women’s Open, U.S. Captain Stacy Lewis has learned the names of the nine automatic qualifiers who will represent the Red, White and Blue at the 2024 Solheim Cup, to be held Sept. 13-15 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va.

Rolex Women’s World Rankings No. 1 Nelly Korda, who has six victories on the 2024 LPGA Tour season, leads the list of seven players named to the team via the U.S. Solheim Cup Team points standings. She is joined (in order of ranking) by Lilia Vu, Lauren Coughlin, Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang and Andrea Lee.

Additionally, Rose Zhang and Alison Lee will represent the U.S. as the two highest Americans in the Rolex Rankings not among the seven qualifiers from the U.S. Solheim Cup Team points standings.

“I’m just excited to have the team finalized. Much of this crew is repeating from 2023, so a lot of them have experience,” said Lewis. “We had five that were qualified coming into the week, and I’m happy to have Megan and Andrea back again. They were big parts of last year's success.”

Alison Lee will be playing on her second U.S. Solheim Cup Team and first since 2015. The nine years between individual Solheim Cup appearances is the longest in U.S. Team history; Sherri Steinhauer had a span of seven years between U.S. Team appearances in 2000 and 2007.

“I’m really happy for Alison Lee to be back at the Solheim Cup, with the largest gap between two Solheim Cups,” said Lewis. “It’s been nine years since her last one and I’m excited for her to have a second go at it, to have a great experience and to do it at home as well.”

2024 will mark the fourth Solheim Cup appearances for Ewing, Khang and Korda, who all played on the 2019, 2021 and 2023 U.S. Teams. Corpuz, Andrea Lee, Vu and Zhang will also be making their second Solheim Cup appearances, while Coughlin will be a rookie on the U.S. squad.

Lewis also receives three captain’s picks to round out the 12-player American squad. Those players will be announced on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m. EDT.

Players started accruing points toward the U.S. Solheim Cup Team points standings at the 2023 Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions. Points were awarded to the top 40 participants at each ranking event, with double points awarded at the five major championships. In the Solheim Cup year, all points values increased by 50%. The full points breakdown is available at  www.solheimcupusa.com/usa-points-standings/how-to-qualify .

The biennial Solheim Cup is the most prestigious international team event in women's professional golf. In 2023, the European Team retained the Cup following a 14-14 tie with the U.S. Team at Finca Cortesin in Spain. The U.S. Team leads the European Team, 10-7-1, all-time in Solheim Cup competition.

Fans can see full 2024 Solheim Cup ticket details at  www.solheimcupusa.com/tickets . Various daily and weekly ticket and hospitality packages are available so fans can enjoy every moment of the action at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.
