Is the JW Marriott Masai Mara the best Marriott on the planet?

Going on safari is unbelievably expensive, and the idea that you can mark one off your bucket list with points is an absolute game-changer. If you’re fortunate to ever go on one, you want to do it right, stay at a nice place, and not cut corners, right? To get your head around the cost of a safari, usually, if you’re looking at 4 or 5 star options, you’re talking around $1000 per person per night. This includes all of your food, beverages ( sans super expensive alcohol ), and all game drives. It’s customary to tip in addition to these rates – to the staff, your guide and ranger. All in all…for a few night trip you’re probably going to fork over around $7k+ for 2 people. Ouch!

Enter…The JW Marriott Masai Mara – bookable with Marriott Bonvoy points ( Transfer partner of American Express, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Bilt Rewards ) When I heard that Marriott was going to have a property in Kenya’s Masai Mara…I was unbelievably excited. What would the award rates be? Would space ever be available? I was like a kid thinking about Santa at Christmas.

a wooden bridge over a river

In 2023… JW Marriott award space hit the market. I had already stayed at the Richard Branson Ulusaba lodge in South Africa, and had a buddy trip planned later in the year. I pitched the idea to my buddy Dave, whom I’d visited Chitwa Chitwa with in 2015 , to see if he’d want to do a safari again, and he was 100% onboard. I set out to make it happen over our potential October dates.

The JW Marriott Masai Mara is absolutely outstanding, and as luck would have it, periodically has quite a bit of award space available. “Periodically” is the keyword here. The award space opens in waves, and then within hours/days, closes back up. It also shifts a lot. Not just with availability, but with the pricing as well. For instance, days on our trip kept changing in price, and since there is a cancellation window of , we were able to adjust it all the way up until we were inside that window ( which is now a whopping 90 days ).

JW Marriott Masai Mara Stay Details

As I mentioned above, you need to stay on top of award space searching via calendar mode. Even after you book, I’d keep an eye on award space as it changed price many times.

  • Cash rate was about $2800 a night
  • Status: Marriott Bonvoy Gold
  • I moved 160k Marriott points into Dave’s account from two accounts I manage ( mine and my wife’s ).

a room with four beds and a couch

Combining points

You can now combine points online…it’s super simple, you just fill out the form and the points are combined within minutes. One member can move 100k points per calendar year, and a member can receive up to 500k points per year. Meaning if you want to do what I did, you’ll need to use more than one account like I did.

Booking the JW Marriott Masai Mara

If you want to book the JW Marriott Masai Mara I’d highly suggest checking daily, or you could set award alerts with Awayz ( this is a premium function so you’d need to get a subscription ). As I mentioned earlier, the property doesn’t really have a reliable release schedule and any given day will have hardly any space, or they’ll dump huge volumes of award space.

The best sweet spot is booking 5 nights since all Marriott Bonvoy members get a 5th night free; however, we stayed 3 nights and felt it was enough.

Rates when we started looking

We first made this reservation at this rate…and then changed. I will note that the cancellation policy was 30 days not 90 days like some reservations include.

a screenshot of a room

Rates we booked – 50k cheaper

I haven’t seen rates at 100k or below since they first dropped…which I’d guess is purposeful since you can add 15k to any 85k credit card award certificate.

a screenshot of a calendar

A lot of people don’t factor in the fringe cost of going on safari like the transportation to the lodge, additional add-ons like hot air balloon rides, or tipping. Here’s how we roughly tipped in USD for a 3 night stay. You could add this to the bill, but we just tipped in straight cash. I believe this if fairl

  • Guide – $500
  • Food Host -$200
  • Drink Captain – $100
  • Housekeeping – $100
  • General Staff – $100

Malaria Pills/Yellow Fever Vaccination

We had some malaria pills, but honestly, I stopped taking them once we realized there weren’t any bugs to speak of. To each their own, but I felt like it was unnecessary. Regarding Yellow Fever, we weren’t checked coming from Tanzania, but you will be checked if you’re coming from a country where Yellow Fever is endemic. You can check the list of countries here

Getting to the JW Marriott Masai Mara

Here is a copy of the email we received offering transportation options to the JW Marriott. It’s very important to note that the flights to the Mara depart from Nairobi Wilson airport which is a very small airport compared to the large international airport of NBO. We paid $450 roundtrip, per person for transportation. You could arrange these yourself and potentially save some money, but you’d need to then relay all of the relevant information to the lodge. We chose to just book through them.

Based on my experience I would avoid Air Kenya, which we flew, and should I venture back to the lodge, I’d use Safari Link. The reputation on the ground is they are far more reliable. Upon departure, our Air Kenya flight was terribly delayed, well over 90 mins, and we heard nothing as far as updates. We were leaving out of Nairobi a few hours after our scheduled arrival

a black screen with white text

Air Kenya Flight

  • You fly out of Nairobi Wilson
  • You need soft sided bags with weight limits

I was kind of paranoid about the weight of my bags since I was brining along electronics that weighed quite a bit. I stuffed all of those into may backpack, and lucky for me, they never weighed those bags…they only weighed the bags that went under the plane.

Note the following restrictions for SOFT baggage – you can find up to date rules here

  • 15 kg (33 lbs) per person  in soft bags, including carry-ons, camera equipment, etc. The dimensions of the bag should not be more than 58 cm (23 in) long x 33 cm (13 inches) high x 25cm (10 in) wide.

We left out additional baggage at the Air Kenya terminal and paid a daily storage fee.

Arrival to the JW Marriott Masai Mara

We made two stops en route to the JW Marriott landing strip which is shared by multiple lodges. I’ve been fortunate enough to do flights like this at Chitwa Chitwa and Ulusaba and the wonderment doesn’t diminish – it’s just incredible seeing animals from the sky.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Airstrip Greeting – champagne anyone?

Some bubbles upon arrival?! Why not! We were kindly greeted and escorted to our waiting Land Cruiser and served up some sparkling wine and snacks. Our guide, Mohammed, wasn’t available so we tagged along with two other guides, and met our guide later that night. We ended up spending about 30 to 45 mins hanging out, paying the park fees and sipping bubbly before the 45 min drive to the camp ( which is a mini safari ).

a vehicle with a ladder on the side

Masai Mara Park Fees

Upon landing you’ll be greeted and required to pay a park fee. This is a daily fee that everyone must pay that is in addition to room rate, transportation fee, and tipping. We paid $70 per person, per day ( 24 hours ). You can find updated fees here

  • $50 per day for kids 9 to 17
  • If you depart after 10 am you’ll pay another day’s fee

The JW Marriott Masai Mara Land Cruiser

There are 3 different rows on the vehicle and I rode on the top two…the top row over the wheel feels A LOT more of the bounce so keep that in mind. We were quite lucky that we shared the vehicle on just 1 of 6 drives we had.

a vehicle with luggage in the back

There are plugs do charge your devices as well as pockets and storage compartments, but sadly, the charging ports never worked. Luckily I had brought multiple back up battery packs which we used every day. The back row also has a cooler in it.

The views are truly spectacular and you’ll often see a herd of elephant walking along the horizon line, zebras, giraffe, buffalo, it’s truly incredible.

Arrival at the JW Marriott Masai Mara

How about this for an incredible arrival! Masai Warriors linking arms, holding your hand, and singing with you. What an outstanding way to be greeted!

You’ll then go across the bridge, have another welcome drink ( I had an amazing lemonade ) and a quick walk around. Sadly I forgot to photograph the incredible Canon rental program.

The entire camp is tented which is super cool, and something I hadn’t really experienced outside of the Martian Tents in Jordan’s Wadi Rum and the Elephant Camp outside Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Dining Options

There are two dining options, and they are both pretty seamless in their layout connected by that bridge below.

  • Fig Tree Lounge

The JW Marriott Masai Mara handles things a little differently. Each time you eat you’ll have the same host and drink captain. At the end of the stay we tipped each individually as they made us feel like kings.

The food was truly outstanding.

This is the base villa, number 6, with an additional bed.

Coffee Station and Mini Bar – ample bottled water, booze, cookies, etc.

Writing desk with stationary.

a desk with a telephone and a phone on it

Storage – robes, safe, laundry, etc

You can do laundry, but you only get a couple items each day. Personally I found this to be skimpy compared to other lodges that allowed unlimited items. When guests need to pack light and you limit laundry or charge when rates are $3k a night…feels a bit cheap to me.

Bathroom – dual vanities, shower ( inside and out )

Large with a soaker tub, plenty of glass, and a MASSIVE Shower

You can see the outdoor jacuzzi ( we never used it, and required quite a bit of head’s up to fill and heat…a couple hours ).

The shower had very strong pressure and as you can see, a full amenity kit.

Outdoor shower as well

Game Drives – very different than South Africa

I’ve been on game drives in South Africa at both Chitwa Chitwa and Ulusaba, as well as in India at Ranthambore looking for Tigers, and in Zimbabwe near Victoria Falls. All of these drives have been a few hours max. At the JW Marriott, game drives can literally last most of the day. I had no idea what we were in for, but it was beyond words.

Each morning you’ll meet at the bar where there is coffee, snacks, etc

a tray of pastries and coffee cups on a table

  • Game Drive evening
  • Morning Game Drive for roughly 7 hours
  • Break for food
  • Evening Game Drive
  • Hot Air Balloon + Game Drive
  • Morning Game Drive.

On our Second day we started the morning off by stumbling upon lions who had just finished their hunt. You could smell the blood and death in the air. I’ve been near animals shortly after a hunt, but nothing like this. You could smell the iron, hear the bones crunching, and see the hyenas starting to circle waiting for their turn. After looking at them for a while, surrounded by other vehicles we got word that a cheetah and her cubs were crossing the Mara so we sped over and they greeted us by walking straight toward our vehicle. As if that wasn’t enough we got word that a leopard was on the hunt about an hour away…should we go? Absolutely. Did we see a leopard hunt a gazelle…yes, yes we did. It drug it 10 feet from our vehicle. What a blessed day of sightings. This didn’t even mention the countless elephants, giraffe, zebra, multiple rhinos, it was jawdropping the sheer number of sightings we had on our first full day.

a lion eating a animal

Hot Air Balloon Ride

One option that we added on was a hot air balloon ride. I believe we were picked up about an hour before sunrise ( roughly 5am ) and driven over to the launch site, about 25 mins away via Land Cruiser. I’d never been in a hot air balloon, and WOW what a cool experience. I now want to do them everywhere.

  • This was an additional $450 per person and I’d do it again in a heartbeat

After the roughly hour ride to the Tanzania border you’ll have a buffet style breakfast.

A Masai Warrior fireside sundowner dance

Chock this up to one of the most memorable experiences of my life. In the middle of the Mara the JW Marriott assembled a sundowner table, fire, and we were graced with not only an incredibly beautiful sunset, but an unforgettable Masai Warrior dance.

Our Guide – Muhamed

Our guide was absolutely fantastic and if we were to return I’d love to have him give us a tour again!

a group of men standing in a field with a sunset behind them

We spent 3 nights at the JW Marriott Masai Mara and my safari cup had runneth over. Could we have stayed longer? Sure. Was it enough. Yes, yes it was. The experience was superb and I have had the distinct privilege of staying at many of the world’s best Marriott properties. When you consider the location, the game drives, food, experiences, all inclusive aspect…it just doesn’t get better than this property. The JW Marriott Masai Mara is the very best use of Marriott Bonvoy points in the world.

Some of the other great Marriott hotels I’ve stayed at:

  • Dubai Desert Safari Hotel – all inclusive, an hour outside the city. Book between 85k and 100k a night
  • Gorgeous, massive villas that are a bucket list destination. 85-100k would be a steal here.
  • Sleek, chic, and great bar scene. If you can score a 50k night, you won’t be disappointed in this Soho property
  • Wonderful location off Hyde Park, recently renovated, great use of 50k cert with a dope club lounge )
  • Modern luxury with a pool in downtown Austin
  • Knightsbridge – a bit dated, but great location and good use of 50k night cert
  • Iconic, incredible luxury property, smack dab on 5th avenue. Anything under 100k is a steal.
  • Beautifully renovated, 10-15 mins from Spanish Steps
  • Large, beach front hotel with multiple pools, and great elite benefits
  • Gorgeous boutique feeling property in downtown Aspen
  • Modern luxury off Macka Park
  • Incredible location across from the Grand Mosque that is on the beach with multiple dining options
  • Boutique luxury off Broadway with sumptuous rooms, intimate new bar, and a roof top pool

  • A sleek 5 star property near NYC’s flatiron building
  • Incredible Ritz Carlton looking over the Tokyo skyline in Roppongi Hills
  • Luxury Collection Property which is the Grande Dame of Athens
  • Historic Giza hotel with views of the Pyramid
  • On the Nile, across from the Egyptian Musem

We absolutely loved our staying at the JW Masai Mara as well and are going back again next year. I’d recommend trying to get an executive suite if you can since it’s same number of points and has a plunge pool. The hot air balloon ride is now $505 a person. (Well worth it though). Great review!

JW Marriott Makes Its Debut in the Luxury Safari Segment With the Opening of JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge

Transformative experiences and meaningful connections await at jw marriott’s haven of luxury in the heart of the masai mara national reserve in kenya.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge - Fig Tree Lounge

JW Marriott , part of Marriott Bonvoy’s global portfolio of 30 extraordinary hotel brands, today announced the opening of JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, marking the company's highly anticipated debut in the luxury safari segment.

Sitting within the Masai Mara National Reserve in Southwestern Kenya, one of Africa’s most renowned wildlife and wilderness conservation regions, the lodge is a sophisticated sanctuary from which to discover animals and breathtaking vistas in harmony. Exhilarating guided game drives offer guests the opportunity to observe the “Big Five” that Masai Mara is home to, including lions, leopards, buffalos, rhinoceros, and elephants. Between June and September, the reserve is host to the annual great wildebeest migration, which sees more than 10 million animals travel a distance of 1,800 miles from the Serengeti in neighboring Tanzania.

“Fostering meaningful connections and nourishing the soul is at the heart of the JW Marriott brand, so entering the luxury safari segment is a natural next step,” said Bruce Rohr, Global Brand Leader, JW Marriott. “Offering our guests once-in-a-lifetime experiences and a deep connection to place, JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge balances the thrill of a game drive with thoughtful opportunities to switch off and take it all in. We are excited to welcome travelers to a transformative and wellness-forward stay delivered with JW Marriott’s legacy of extraordinary hospitality.”

Inspired Design The lodge’s elegant interiors, designed by Kristina Zanic Consultants, seamlessly blend the savannah inwards, drawing inspiration from the elements with soft, warm tones, natural materials and textures, and native colors thread through its design. Each of the lodge’s 20 private tents provide a peaceful sanctuary to recharge and reset, and feature terraces overlooking the River Talek, a water source and habitat for many wildlife. The tented honeymoon suite offers a private plunge pool, while two interconnecting king and twin suites are ideal for families with children over the age of six (the minimum age of guests at the lodge).

Well-being and Mindful Practices In keeping with JW Marriott’s ethos of mindfulness, the lodge is home to a number of thoughtfully-designed spaces, from the cozy Adventure Lounge full of books to get lost in and a nook for young adults to take time for themselves, to the Cultural Deck where guests can gather around the fire pit to share tales of the day’s exploration.

Capturing the essence of rejuvenation, the Spa by JW emulates the serenity of the reserve and offers tailored experiences and signature treatments which blend locally-inspired techniques and therapies. These are complemented by natural and organic products by renowned African skincare brand, Healing Earth, also available as in-room amenities. Guests can enjoy spa treatments from the comfort of their tented suite, accompanied by the sounds of the wilderness. Extending beyond body to mind and spirit with guided yoga, treatments include a ‘Masai Celebration’ incorporating local botanicals and therapies.

Nourishing Culinary Journeys At the heart of the camp is the JW Garden - an outdoor space for guests to spend time discovering home-grown, organic ingredients, including the lodge’s signature rosemary. The garden’s produce is used by chefs to craft personalized dishes, cocktails, and mocktails. The garden will host daily programming, including live cooking, interactive cocktail mixology, and chef-led talks for a true farm-to-table experience. A relaxing gathering place, Fig Tree Lounge offers panoramic views of the surrounding plains from the indoor and outdoor bar and serves refreshing cocktails and mocktails infused with seasonal ingredients from the lodge’s garden. An indoor and alfresco dining experience at Sarabi Restaurant takes guests on a nourishing epicurean experience guided by JW Garden ingredients and local culinary heritage. Guests can venture out into the reserve with the lodge’s guides to enjoy a freshly prepared ‘Bush Breakfast’ or dinner while sipping sundowners and soaking in the breathtaking savannah vistas.

Connection to the Locale The lodge’s community programming provides an authentic insight into meaningful local projects, including The Maa Trust, an organization empowering local people by promoting small business start-ups. The lodge donates a percentage of the nightly rate per person to the organization and provides a space for craftspeople to retail Maa Beadwork and produce. Guests can visit The Maa Trust to meet with local artisans and forge a deeper connection to the people in the area.

Currently, 60 percent of the lodge’s team are locals, with plans to reach 70 percent, ensuring the hotel’s contribution to the socio-economic development of the region. As an ongoing initiative, JW Marriott Masai Mara’s Apprenticeship Program invites young women from the community to diversify their skills and broaden their experience to kick-start their careers in the hospitality industry. Partnership with the community began during the early development process of the lodge. Developed on land committed to a tourism project so as not to unduly disturb the surrounding environment, much of the construction was undertaken by local experts overseen by technical specialists, with build materials sourced from sustainable suppliers. The lodge has rehabilitated access roads to the property, installed power to the area, and provided access to clean drinking water for locals through a water treatment plant.

Emphasis on waste reduction and recycling is integral to daily operations. The lodge’s water treatment plant provides recycled and sanitized water; food waste is placed at the lodge’s compost site; and water wells are dotted around the lodge for animals to quench their thirst throughout the day.

By supporting local organizations such as The Mara Elephant Project and The Mara Protector Conservation Programme, JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge contributes to protecting animals and their habitat across the greater Mara ecosystem. Bringing a passion for the surrounding wildlife and nature to guests, the lodge’s Head Guide is a lifelong conservationist who holds talks about local culture at the lodge as well as guided walking tours. With an abundance of meaningful moments to experience at the lodge, guests can delve into photography and learn new skills at the lodge’s very own studio.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is a 30-minute drive from Keekorok Airstrip and a 25-minute drive from Sekenani Main Gate.

Bookings for JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge are now open with prices from $1450 per person, per night (all-inclusive board basis). For more information, visit www.marriott.com .

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge review: a transformative safari trip

Combining luxury and adventure in Kenya’s spectacular wildlife reserve

Fig Tree Lounge at the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge

Travel has opened up so many amazing experiences, but have you ever woken to the sight of baboons squabbling in a tree just a stone’s throw from your bed? Or stared down a pair of passing cheetahs, or lions guarding their latest kill?

A horseback safari by the Maasai Mara 70 best holiday ideas for your travel bucket list

Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve sounds like the stuff of fiction, yet this land of big game and spear-wielding warriors is real and it’s truly spectacular. And while sticking a luxury camp in this magical wilderness might easily strike the wrong note, the recently opened JW Marriott Masai Lodge is entirely in tune with its surroundings, as I discovered during a three-day trip of a lifetime.

xxx

Set beside the Talek River on the edge of the Mara, as locals call it, the global luxury brand’s debut safari venture has been welcoming guests since the start of April, in unforgettable fashion. After touching down at the reserve’s Keekorok Airstrip in a teeny 12-seater plane from Nairobi, our group was greeted with champagne to refresh us for the half-hour drive to the lodge, where chanting Masai warriors lined the path to the entrance – a wobbly wooden suspension bridge crossing the river.

These local warriors are employed to patrol the camp around the clock and to guide guests after night descends. With an animal path cutting through the otherwise enclosed grounds, walking around alone in the dark is a definite no-no for non-warrior types, as one of the experts explained after spotting a hippo stomping along close to my “tent” (think amped-up glamping rather than camping).

xxx

The lodge accommodation comprises 20 of these canvas suites which, like the rest of the interior spaces, are decked out in natural materials and calming neutral tones that echo the surrounding landscape. All of the suites have indoor and outdoor showers, canopied balconies with hot tubs overlooking the river, and of course, Wi-Fi. There are no TVs, but a turf war playing out between baboons in a tree on the opposite bank acted as my, far superior, in-room entertainment.

The housekeeping signs are equally unusual, taking the form of “do not disturb” spears to plant at the suite entrances. There are also plenty of more conventional features that align with JW Marriott’s focus on well-being including a pillows menu and fragrant toiletries from African skincare brand Healing Earth. And fluffy hot water bottles are placed in the beds to counter the evening chill in this extremely changeable climate – a welcome unexpected touch, though guests might get a scare when they first feel something warm and furry beneath the sheets.

xxx

Those in need of a bracing drink can raid the well-stocked mini bars or head to the full-size version in the camp’s Fig Tree Lounge. The massive namesake tree towering in the centre of the lounge’s outdoor patio area provides much-needed shade during the day. Come dusk, the seated area around the patio fire pit is a cosy spot for guests to gather with cocktails garnished with herbs from the JW Garden.

Set at the heart of the camp, this garden produces an array of ingredients that are also used in the lodge’s Sarabi Restaurant. Here, I and fellow guests tucked into feasts of Indian foods (reflecting the culinary influence of Kenya’s sizeable Indian community) and traditional Kenyan dishes including roast meats, tasty stews and my personal favourite, ugali, a doughy form of maize or corn flour that is ideal for dipping.

Sarabi’s chefs deserve much praise for producing consistently excellent meals despite ever-shifting deadlines owing to the local relaxed attitude to time (a guesstimate “45 minutes” is the stock answer to any scheduling query). The chefs’ patience may also be challenged by non-human visitors, such as a very cheeky monkey that tried to steal croissants from our breakfast buffet.

xxx

The long-suffering cooks might benefit from a relaxing treatment at the lodge’s Spa by JW, where I enjoyed a tension-busting massage. The lodge’s other wellness-boosting amenities include an open-sided gym and an outdoor pool area where guests can join evening “yoga beneath the stars” sessions. Or to flex their grey matter, they can read the many books in the Adventure Lounge, which sits beside what will be a photography studio.

The lodge is pitched as a “retreat for the mind, body and soul” and with so much on offer, it lives up to the hype. But the highlight of my transformative trip was, of course, the region’s star attraction – the wildlife.

The safari experience

Spanning around 580 square miles, the Mara is home to more than 100 mammal species including the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, African buffalo and rhino.

Four of these five kindly put in close-up appearances during my group’s game drives, with just the last proving elusive. A fellow safari -goer swore she saw a retreating rhino from afar, but that might have been what our knowledgeable and witty guide Festus referred to as “Alts” (animal-like trees). Either way, we maintained a careful watch during stops to “pick a flower” and “walk the dog” (Festus-speak for al fresco loo breaks).

The first half of the reserve’s name honours the area’s ancestral inhabitants, while Mara means “spotted” in the Masai language (Maa), a reference to the area’s savannah plains speckled with riverine forests‚ mountain ridges and natural springs. This richly varied ecosystem attracts millions of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles that flood into the Mara each June in search of food during the annual Great Migration.

My visit took place shortly before the stampede was due to arrive on the 1,800-mile round trip from Tanzania’s Serengeti. But thanks to Festus and his “Bush CNN” (CB radio network with the lodge’s other guides), our group saw an A to Z of creatures ranging from antelopes, giraffes and hyenas to warthogs and zebras.

A breakneck dash across the savannah resulted in a once-in-a-lifetime encounter (from a safe distance in our open-sided Jeep) with one of the estimated 40 remaining leopards in the Mara, as the sun dropped towards the horizon. And after frantic messaging on the Bush CNN, we tracked down what Festus informed us were a pair of almost equally rare cheetah brothers padding along a grassy plain as the sun rose the following morning.

Leopard in Masai Mara

The big cat sightings continued with a pack of lions feeding on the carcass of a buffalo, a bloody spectacle with a soundtrack of tearing and crunching that no TV documentary can fully capture. This gory scene failed to kill our appetites for our subsequent bush breakfast, with the lodge’s chefs cooking up top-notch eggs and the like in a pop-up kitchen.

The unflappable team also staged a picture-perfect finale for our last journey into the savannah, setting up a mini bar and bonfire for a sundowner drinks experience. The Mara had other ideas though, with a sudden storm triggering a human stampede to our Jeeps. Following a rain-lashed race back to camp along the pot-holed roads, our day ended with equally enjoyable but less Instagram-worthy drinks under the shelter of canvas – a fitting reminder that in this vast wilderness, nature ultimately calls the shots.

The bigger picture

Witnessing the wonders and sheer beauty of the Mara in the flesh can be a life-changing experience for visitors, but questions about the potential impacts of this tourism merit answers. JW Marriott is addressing these tricky issues through initiatives including providing a water treatment plant for the area, and by pumping investment back into the community by employing locals, who currently make up more than 60% of the lodge staff.

The brand also offers hospitality apprenticeship programmes aimed chiefly at local women, who traditionally marry in their early teens and often struggle to access education. One staff member, Tito, told us how she was helping to pay to educate her siblings after becoming the first girl in her family to go to school. The pioneering mother of two also campaigns against female circumcision and against the poaching that has threatened many animal species in the Mara.

JW Marriott is getting in on the conservation action as well, through tie-ups with groups including The Maa Trust, a non-profit with a focus on environmental protection that empowers local people by promoting small business start-ups. Guests can visit The Maa Trust to meet local artisans, some of whom sell their work at the lodge.

My group was also invited to visit a nearby Masai village to learn more about their culture. Named after the acacia trees that ring the circular encampment of small mud houses, Ololchurra is home to an extended family of around 60 people who fund their recently launched community school by selling cattle and crafts. We got a lesson on Masai life from an elder who had learned English alongside Kenya’s other official language, Swahili, as a child after braving daily ten-mile treks to the nearest school.

The insights into the lives of the Masai were fascinating and numerous, from their staple diet (meat, milk and cattle blood, drunk warm) to the meanings behind traditional rituals and chants. But the key takeaway message was this community’s respect for their lands and its wildlife. After even the briefest visit to the Mara, any visitor will surely share that respect.

Kari Wilkin was a guest of the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge. Rates start from £1,420/$1,750 per person per night or £2,355/$2,900 for two people per night, including accommodation on a full-board basis, two shared game drives per day and return air transfers from Keekorok Airstrip; marriott.com

Ricky Zhang

Review: JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge

masai mara safari jw marriott

This year, after the exciting milestone of getting married to my partner Jessy, we embarked on a round-the-world honeymoon . Our first aspirational experience on the trip began with a four-night stay at the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge.

Situated in Kenya’s famed Masai Mara National Reserve, the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is a luxurious all-inclusive oasis surrounded by wildlife, the Talek River, and the vast savannah plains.

This property, which opened in April 2023, brings forth a dynamic new stride for JW Marriott and the Marriott portfolio, as it’s the first African safari experience that can be booked with points through a major hotel loyalty program.

Until now, the luxury experience of a safari wasn’t accessible on points, so this development is a major advantage for those wishing to enjoy it with excellent value for their points.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Booking

The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge sets standard rates for base-level accommodation at a premium price of $1,750+ (USD) per night.

In contrast, redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points costs about 120,000 points per night, which can be coupled with the advantage of the Fifth Night Free benefit.

It’s not uncommon to find discounted rates of 75,000 Bonvoy points per night, although you’ll have to keep a keen eye on availability to get this rate.

Remarkably, all rates include not only breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks – including alcohol, though excluding premium spirits – as well as up to two game drives per day. This presents an extraordinary value proposition, especially when booking with points!

For any cash bookings at JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, you’ll be happy to know that it participates in Marriott Luminous , a preferred partner program.

By booking your stay through an authorized travel advisor, you’ll receive a number of other perks and benefits at no extra cost, which come in addition to those you may enjoy with  Marriott Bonvoy status .

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Location

The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is elegantly perched in the southwestern region of Kenya, nestled within the expanse of the Great Rift Valley area in Narok County.

The lodge, which is situated along the Talek River, is a serene sanctuary amidst the reserve. Our visit during the dry season saw the river as more of a modest stream; however, it transforms into a thriving waterway in the wet season.

There are several options for making your way to the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, including road travel or flying to the nearest airstrip before completing the journey to the lodge.

For those choosing the scenic route, a drive from Nairobi is a journey of around five to six hours, and comes at a cost of $400 (USD).

Alternatively, there are numerous airstrips within the reserve, with Mara-Keekorok in the Masai Mara National Reserve being the closest to the lodge.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Arrival

For our journey, we chose AirKenya Express from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport. This came at an approximate cost of $160 (USD) per person per direction.

We opted for a one-way journey, since we’d proceed to Tanzania following our stay, instead of heading back to Nairobi.

Depending on the time of year, AirKenya Express offers flights in the morning and afternoon. We chose a morning departure, both to maximize our time spent at the lodge, and to enjoy the morning views from the plane.

AirKenya Express offers an all-economy cabin with a 2-2 configuration.

At the front of the cabin, two seats face backwards, which could be a fun choice if you’re travelling as a group of four.

Otherwise, you’ll be comfortable enough for the roughly 40-minute flight from Nairobi. There aren’t any noteworthy aspects of the seat, aside from the views you’ll enjoy for the entirety of the flight.

As the plane touched down at Keekorok Airstrip, a sense of anticipation filled the air, knowing that just an hour away, luxury and untouched nature awaited us.

Prior to your arrival, the team at the lodge coordinates your flight details, to ensure a smooth transition from air to land. Upon arrival, a dedicated driver awaits, ready to transport you to the lodge.

Keep in mind that there’s a park fee of $70 (USD) per person per night, which is payable at the booth at Keekorok Airstrip.

Immediately upon arrival, we were welcomed with a variety of snacks, tea, and coffee. Soon after, a JW Marriott-branded Land Cruiser whisked us away, turning the journey itself into a spectacle.

The safari experience began the moment we started cruising along the dirt paths. Our driver, who also doubled as our safari guide, enriched the journey with insights into the ecosystems and impromptu stops for us to observe the wildlife.

Upon arriving at the resort, you’ll encounter a bridge suspended over the Talek River. Crossing this bridge leads you directly into the heart of the property.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Check-in

The warmth and hospitality offered at the lodge continues with the check-in experience, which was led by the lovely Thelma for our stay.

We were greeted with a Masai welcoming ceremony, during which we were offered delicious non-alcoholic drinks.

We were then ushered into the beautifully decorated welcome tent, where we were provided with warm towels.

Thelma introduced us to the lodge and took us around on a brief tour before showing us to our villa, which is perched alongside the river.

The central main lodge area anchors the setting, with individual villas extending in both directions along the river, all overlooking its flow. With just 20 villas in all, the atmosphere is notably intimate.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Deluxe Suite

We stayed in a Deluxe Suite, which is the base-level room type at the lodge. These suites are spacious, and come complete with an open terrace and sweeping views of the river.

A Masai spear is positioned at the entrance of each villa, which guests can place in a central slot to signal “Do Not Disturb”.

All villas are designed as tented lodges, which blend indoor and outdoor elements, and feature walls constructed of both tent fabric and glass doors and windows.

A spacious terrace immediately welcomes you with a scenic river view. Inside, the suite is striking, with its gorgeous design that features the extensive use of wood and natural materials, all in calming neutral tones that reflect the nearby scenery.

The suite’s coziness is enhanced by large woven fixtures, and ample natural light.

The suite features a generous bed, which is draped in a delicate white canopy.

When we arrived, the crisp sheets on the bed were embellished with a heart-shaped arrangement of red and white rose petals, spelling “Happy Honeymoon” – a thoughtful touch that elevated the romantic ambiance of the space.

A wooden bench is thoughtfully placed at the foot of the bed.

A seating area further expands the space, outfitted with soft grey sofas and plush ottomans, all arranged around a coffee table. I adored the throw pillows and blankets, which add a layer of dimension to the space.

Upon our arrival, we noticed two black water bottles proactively set on the table, each personalized with our names.

Along the side of the room is a wooden desk, which is accompanied by a chair with a soft brown cushion. It’s a great spot for reflection or penning down thoughts, against the backdrop of swaying trees and the clear blue sky.

In the corner of the room is an expansive and well-stocked minibar, all of which is complimentary. It’s stocked with a bottle of wine, assorted spirits, and beer, as well as non-alcoholic beverages such as coffee, soft drinks, and water.

Nearby, we were delighted to find a bottle of sparkling wine on ice to welcome us in style.

Two expansive wardrobes, complete with plush robes and slippers, occupy the back of the room.

The space effortlessly flows into a stunning bathroom, which boasts a dual vanity crafted from elegant light wood that’s adorned with marble countertops.

The shower includes a rainfall showerhead and handheld feature. A second door opens to the exterior of the tent for a novel outdoor shower experience.

On the back deck, directly outside the bathroom, there’s a whirlpool and two chairs. While the whirlpool proved less inviting during the heat of the day, it became a delightful spot to soak and relax as dusk and nighttime unfolded.

Remarkably, you can observe wildlife while soaking in the outdoor whirlpool, or even while taking a shower.

Interestingly, there aren’t any TVs in the suite, which might be considered a thoughtful touch, as it encourages you to engage more fully with your surroundings without any digital distractions.

There’s one significant downside to the suite: as a tented structure, it doesn’t feature air conditioning – indeed, air conditioning is mostly absent from the entire property.

This can become a significant inconvenience during the daytime hours, as the temperatures of the savannah soar.

The ceiling fans in the suite only provide limited relief from the midday heat. While the property does provide some remote air conditioning units, their efficacy is questionable.

Therefore, due to the heat, it can be challenging to comfortably bridge the gap between your morning and afternoon game drives. An attempt at an afternoon nap one day left us sweaty, disgruntled, and uncomfortable.

Perhaps the most viable option for leisure during these interim periods is to frequent the pool, which is maintained at a refreshingly cool temperature.

Another potential workaround might involve opting for full-day game drives rather than returning to the lodge. Regardless, it’s something to be aware of when considering a booking here at the JW Marriott Masai Mara.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Game Drives

The primary activity at the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is to embark on game drives. The Mara encompasses approximately 580 square miles, and hosts over 100 mammal species, notably including the “Big Five”: lions, leopards, elephants, African buffaloes, and rhinos.

The initial portion of the reserve’s name pays homage to the region’s ancestral residents, while “Mara” translates to “spotted” in the Masai language (Maa).

Morning, afternoon, or full-day game drives can be arranged with your guide, tailored to your preferences.

In our experience, we opted for a morning game drive on our arrival day, followed by an afternoon drive that same day. The subsequent day mirrored the first, followed by a full-day game drive the day after.

Finally, we enjoyed just a morning game drive on the last day, spending the remainder of the time relaxing on the property.

Morning game drives usually set out around 6:30am, and return by 10am for breakfast. However, you can arrange for a picnic breakfast instead to extend your outing.

There’s also typically a small spread of coffee and pastries to enjoy at the lodge before heading out on your morning game drive, which we definitely appreciated during our early awakenings.

Afternoon excursions typically leave around 4pm, and come back around 7pm, just in time for dinner.

Full-day game drives might commence at 8am following breakfast, and include a picnic lunch. These drives generally conclude around 5pm; however, all schedules are flexible and can be customized with your guide.

The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge employs custom-built Land Rovers, with either four or six seats. These are notably impressive vehicles, with an open-air design that affords direct views of the passing wildlife.

The Land Rovers contrast with the more conventional safari vehicles that you’ll see around the Mara, which feature glass panes and a retractable roof that you’re supposed to peek through.

While the drawback of this design is that it exposes you to more dust while driving, I found that this was only a minor inconvenience.

Each vehicle is equipped with a selection of amenities to enhance your comfort while navigating the park. Complimentary sunscreen, hand sanitizer, and binoculars are provided, alongside a fridge filled with complimentary drinks. Furthermore, universal power outlets and USB-A ports are available for use.

Our guide, Boru, was exceptional. We were fortunate to have him exclusively assigned to us throughout our stay – a rarity considering that game drives are usually shared with other guests in the same vehicle, while private use of a vehicle incurs an additional fee.

Boru was not only knowledgeable and enthusiastic, but also a wonderful conversationalist. He went above and beyond to maximize our safari experience, such as swiftly navigating to areas where rhinos were spotted upon receiving the news via his walkie-talkie.

If your travels take you to the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, I wholeheartedly recommend requesting Boru as your guide – just make sure to tell him I say hi!

This was our first safari experience, and the awe was palpable as we were thoroughly captivated by the spectacle. Observing all the wild animals in their natural habitat was amazing and magical.

We were fortunate to witness all of the “Big Five” in a variety of settings: lionesses in peaceful slumber, a mating pair of lions, a hunting leopard, wandering families of elephants – including adorable babies – and a modest family trio of rhinos, albeit hidden by some bushes, which limited our ability to photograph them.

Given that there are only about 40 rhinos in the entire Serengeti/Masai Mara ecosystem, we still considered ourselves extremely lucky.

Our adventures also introduced us to numerous other animals, such as cheetahs, hippos, crocodiles, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, hyenas, warthogs, ostriches, and more.

A standout element of the JW Marriott Masai Mara is its partnership with Canon, which enables guests to borrow telescopic lenses at no additional charge.

This allowed me to capture some truly epic photo and video shots of the animals, a perk that most other safari lodges might charge extra for.

While we stayed relatively close to the lodge for the morning and afternoon game drives, our full-day drive took us across the Mara River, approximately 1.5 hours in each direction, to witness the Great Migration. Here, we were greeted by a massive herd of migrating zebras and wildebeest.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Dining

All rates at the property are inclusive of all meals, which also offers flexibility in your dining experiences. You may enjoy breakfast and lunch on the property, or opt for them to be packaged as a picnic during a game drive.

On-site dining can take place in the main lodge, or be delightfully served within the comfort of your villa.

Sarabi Restaurant offers both indoor and al-fresco dining experiences that intertwine ingredients grown in the JW Garden and the local culinary heritage.

For a unique dining experience, you can explore the reserve with the lodge’s guides and savour a freshly prepared “Bush Breakfast” or dinner, amidst the stunning landscapes.

Adjacent to Sarabi in the main lodge, the Fig Tree Lounge provides panoramic views of the nearby plains from its indoor and outdoor bars, and serves a variety of refreshing cocktails and mocktails, infused with seasonal ingredients sourced from the lodge’s garden.

During our stay, we predominantly dined in the main dining area. Our server, Eunice, was not only a delight but also a highlight of our visit.

At the lodge, breakfast is served at Sarabi. You can order items from the à la carte menu as you wish.

The breakfast offerings were standard yet satisfying, featuring a selection of eggs, proteins, and healthy options. I took a particular liking to the omelette.

A variety of pastries, yogurts, and juices are also served on the side to round out your meal.

One of the unique experiences the resort curates for each guest is a bush breakfast, at least once during the stay.

This goes quite above and beyond, as many safari lodges typically charge extra for such an experience. We indulged in the bush breakfast on our final morning just before departure.

Experiencing breakfast served amidst the savannah was very special, and it was impressive how the hotel managed to establish a full kitchen setup out in the bush. Moreover, the service staff, including Eunice, ventured out to join us!

On the other hand, the picnic breakfast was somewhat less elaborate; orders are placed the night before, offering a choice from typical items like eggs your style, bacon, sausage, fruits, and so forth.

Lunch featured a rotating menu, typically beginning with a soup or appetizer, followed by a main course, and concluding with dessert.

masai mara safari jw marriott

Gazpacho was a frequent soup choice, offering a refreshing respite in the midst of a hot day.

The flavourful salads are served in elevated pedestal-style bowls with portions that leaned toward the petite side; Jessy would often request a double portion to secure a more substantial salad.

Lunch was arguably the least impressive meal of the day. Some items, like the fish, were satisfactory on certain days, while others, such as the pizza, fell a bit short.

masai mara safari jw marriott

An alternative dining option allowed for lunch to be served poolside, which we opted for and enjoyed one day.

For our full-day game drive, we chose a picnic lunch, delighting in a simpler selection of various salads, sandwiches, and desserts while awaiting the potential sighting of lions mating.

Dinner at the resort offered a varied experience, rotating through different themed menus each night, although the chef remained flexible to preparing any desired dish.

The dinner service began with an Asian night, featuring an à la carte menu, which was followed by a steak or seafood à la carte menu on the second night.

masai mara safari jw marriott

While the Asian night did not particularly impress us, the steak on the second night was a delightful experience for my palate.

masai mara safari jw marriott

The third night introduced an Indian theme with family-style dishes meant for sharing, while the fourth night celebrated Kenyan cuisine, during which we dined as a large group, including my friend Tommy from Travel Like Tommy and other new friends we made at the resort.

I found myself contemplating reordering the delectable steak from the second night, but was also intrigued to explore the entirety of the culinary array offered by the resort.

Overall, we found that the food at the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge was generally pleasing, but with certain dishes being hit-or-miss, there’s definitely room for the resort to further elevate its culinary quality.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Bar

Beverages are included throughout your stay, offering a diverse selection to choose from on the drink list.

Positioned in the communal area, the bar provides a pleasant spot to savor a drink after the exhilaration of a game drive, just before transitioning to dinner. The bar staff, Joseph and Barrett, delivered exemplary service.

Moreover, the freedom to enjoy a drink is not confined to the bar – you’re welcome to indulge anywhere on the property.

Additionally, your room’s minibar is complimentary, further enhancing the all-inclusive experience.

As a welcome gesture, the hotel presented us with a bottle of South African sparkling wine, which we delightedly paired with our dinner one evening. It’s worth noting, however, that Champagne is not included in the inclusive offerings.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Activities

While game drives are included in your adventure, you also have the option to choose from on a few distinct paid activities. A particularly unique choice is a visit to a Masai village, available for $40 (USD) per person.

The Masai people, known for their singular tribal lifestyle, dwell in hand-crafted mud huts and shepherd their animals, moving nomadically across the terrain.

They invite visitors to witness their distinctive song and dance routines, during which the men traditionally jump as high as possible in a competition to win spouses.

Visitors are also treated to a demonstration of their specialized fire-making methods, which involve vigorously rubbing two different types of wood together.

A young Masai villager acted as our tour guide, walking us through the village and even inside their unembellished living quarters, providing a fascinating and enlightening peek into an utterly different way of life.

Tours from safari guests like yourself offer an essential source of income for the Masai, enabling them to grant younger generations access to education and pave the way for a better future.

Naturally, a variety of trinkets and knick-knacks are available for purchase to support the Masai villagers. Alternatively, a donation is always appreciated during your visit to the village – even a modest contribution from you can make a significant difference for them.

Additional activities are also available, such as hot air balloon rides, priced at $450 (USD) per person.

One of the complimentary activities that the resort endeavors to arrange once per stay is “sundowners.” This entails a drive out into the bush to savor cocktails and witness the sunset, providing not only a fantastic time and brilliant photo opportunity but also a pleasant chance to converse with other guests.

While other safari lodges might charge extra for this, the JW arranges it free of charge, ensuring your stay is peppered with delightful and unforgettable moments.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Other Facilities

The common areas of the main lodge are very nicely decorated, characterized by high ceilings crowned with wooden beams, and walls adorned with intricate woven and macramé tapestries.

Outside, a massive namesake tree towering in the centre of the lounge’s outdoor patio area provides much-needed shade during the day.

As dusk settles, the seating area around the patio fire pit becomes quite cozy. I was fond of the evening bonfires, which I found to be a perfect setting to converse with fellow guests.

The spa, pool, and fitness centre are conveniently located on one side of the property, merely a few steps from the lobby,

Known as “The Watering Hole”, the infinity pool serves as a delightful refuge to while away the time during the hot daytime hours, standing out as arguably the only spot on the property to spend time comfortably in the heat.

Although the pool maintains a quite chilly temperature, which requires a bit of acclimation, it becomes pleasantly refreshing once fully submerged.

The design of the space captivated me; at its heart lies the infinity pool, encircled by a selection of comfortable loungers and chairs, with some positioned under the shade.

Adjacent to the pool, the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge’s spa is nestled within three tents, with two treatment rooms overlooking the bush.

Additionally, there are a few common areas, a sauna, a steam room, and a cold plunge pool – although the swimming pool itself is already refreshingly cool!

The fitness centre boasts modern equipment, featuring an electronic workout interface and custom-made weights crafted from leather and sand.

It embraces an indoor-outdoor design, exposed to the natural elements and heat during the day, while enveloped by tented walls at night. With that in mind, the indoor-outdoor workout conditions may not be deemed ideal for everyone.

Lastly, there’s the JW Garden, a spot where plants are grown for cooking, and special dinners are planned for the future including live cooking, cocktail mixing sessions, and chef talks.

JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge – Service

In short, I have nothing but the highest praise to give about the service at the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge.

It’s evident that every team member takes immense pride in their work, and that employment with the JW Marriott brand – the first international hospitality brand to debut in the region – is a distinguished honour for everyone at the lodge.

Engaging conversations with Thelma and Kennedy from the front desk were always a pleasure. Eunice, always donning a smile, was remarkable, recalling our preferences and preemptively inquiring if we desired items we’d asked for on prior days.

The housekeeping team was proficient, unnoticeably managing our room with morning cleanings and evening turndown services during our absence.

Impressively, the resort staff seemed to always be in tune with our location and needs. A particular instance of this was when we were leisurely spending time by the pool on our final day, and without having had lunch yet, Eunice thoughtfully came over to ask if we’d like something to snack on or drink.

A noteworthy service from the resort includes complimentary laundry, accommodating five pieces per individual daily. Indeed, this was a much-appreciated amenity given the dust from the game drives.

However, it’s our guide, Boru, who deserves the utmost praise, as he’s an immaculate professional who enjoys a chat, shares his knowledge generously, and played a key role in helping us maximize our first safari experience. Our farewells to Boru and Eunice at the end were undoubtedly the hardest!

While gratuities aren’t necessary, they’re always appreciated, and can be added to your folio upon check-out and designated to specific staff members or distributed amongst all personnel.

Our stay at the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, the first major safari property in Africa which can be booked using points, delivered a spectacular experience.

The resort provided a wealth of inclusions, such as comprehensive game drives, stellar vehicles, outstanding service, a bush breakfast, sundowners, and the use of Canon telescopic cameras, with each element contributing to an unforgettable adventure.

However, it’s important to also highlight areas for improvement, such as the absence of air conditioning and the inconsistent food quality. I hope to see these elements elevated to match the overall high standards as the resort progresses through its inaugural year.

For those, like us, who dream of a unique adventure among the animals of the African savannah, I’d highly recommend the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge for an outstanding safari experience – especially if you can book it on points at an exceptional value.

Marriott will open a luxury safari lodge in Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve

Tanner Saunders

Want to take a luxury safari with your points and miles? For Marriott Bonvoy loyalists that's about to be easier than ever thanks to a high-end new safari option coming to Kenya: the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge.

Set within the Masai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya, this new lodge will be on the edge of the reserve, overlooking the Talek River, so keep your eyes open for hippos lounging in the water. The elevated camp will have sweeping views of the plains and wildlife, along with 20 private tents that are incredibly modern and chic.

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

For families looking to safari together, consider the two interconnecting canopied suites with private terraces looking out at the river. Or, for the most luxe experience at the lodge, there's also a single presidential canvas-topped suite.

masai mara safari jw marriott

As for the rest of the lodge, guests can expect a restaurant, bar and spa alongside a large outdoor terrace with fire pits that will host live entertainment such as traditional Masai dance performances in the evening.

The lodge interiors are being designed by Dubai-based Kristina Zanic, whose firm has worked on projects including The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah , Al Wadi Desert and the Al Mahara Restaurant in one of the world's most famous hotels, the Burj Al Arab .

"The location and surrounding landscape will be reflected at every turn ... drawing inspiration from the elements: earth, wind, fire and water," Marriott said in a statement about the new camp. "Warm touches of neutrals and natural materials will lend to a warm ambiance, while an earth tone color palette promises to sit in harmony with the landscape."

Of course, the main reason most people travel to the Masai Mara is to go on a safari in hopes of seeing the "Big Five" (lions, leopards, buffalos, rhinos and elephants).

masai mara safari jw marriott

"JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge will offer guests a luxurious backdrop to make once-in-a-lifetime memories as they connect with nature and wildlife as never before," said Bruce Rohr, vice president and brand leader at JW Marriott, in the statement.

Marriott also plans to hire up to 50 people from the Masai community and offer guests "robust learning opportunities" that allow people to immerse themselves in the destination and its culture.

The JW Marriott Masai Mara is expected to open in 2023, though the property's pricing and Marriott Bonvoy Category aren't yet available.

While this is Marriott's first official foray into luxury safaris thanks to an agreement with Baraka Lodges Ltd, it's not entirely new territory for the hotel brand.

Marriott's Protea brand currently offers outsourced safaris at select locations including the Category 2 Protea Hotel Kruger Gate , which can be booked for between 10,000 and 15,000 points per night. (We have a feeling you'll need quite a few more points to reserve a stay at the forthcoming JW.)

Of course, there are plenty of ways you can take a safari on points and miles before this new JW Marriott welcomes guests. In fact, we even have a handy guide to help you figure it all out . Or, if you're just looking for tips from an expert, The Points Guy himself, Brian Kelly, spoke to renowned expert Marlon du Toit about everything you need to know to go on safari in Africa .

Review: First in: JW Marriott Masai Mara, Kenya

masai mara safari jw marriott

Reviewed by Chris Schalkx

Set the scene

Forget about JW Marriott’s typical gleaming high-rise hotels and mega-resorts. For Marriott’s first foray into the safari game , the brand has kept things appropriately snug with just 20 tents pitched up on the bushy banks of the Maasai Mara’s Talek River. The thrill starts well before check-in: within minutes of touching down at the reserve’s Keekorok airstrip (which offers direct turboprop connections with Nairobi), you might spot lions lolling in the tall grass, or elephants grazing along the road. Upon arrival at the camp, a wobbly wooden suspension bridge crosses the river (and with that, the reserve’s natural border) to the canvas-roofed communal lounge, where plenty of zebra-patterned pillows, wood-carved elephant statues and wall-spanning portraits of Masaai tribespeople instantly deliver on the African bush camp fantasy. Ultra-spacious tents, a lounger-lined pool, and a cosy bonfire pit make this a plush spot to retreat between game drives. The small-scale, anything-goes vibe makes it feel un-Marriott in the best possible way.

The backstory

All eyes were on this hotel when it opened in April 2023, marking an exciting new chapter for JW Marriott and the greater Marriott umbrella. As the world’s largest hotel chain’s first-ever safari camp, and the smallest outpost in its hotel group, the JW Marriott Masai Mara is a sandbox of sort – a way to figure out how the trusted Marriott formula translates in the African bush. Mere weeks after opening, the outlook is promising: the camp has been booked out for months in advance. The project has also spurred Marriott (along with some other global hotel chains) to sniff out partner sites beyond the Maasai Mara and Kenya to expand their budding safari portfolio.

Each of the 20 tents is similar in their generous size and style – with the exception of the honeymoon villa (the only tent with a private plunge pool ) and an interconnecting family suite. Between their canvas walls' zipper- and roll-up windows you’ll find a supremely comfortable four-poster bed (draped in mosquito netting) and decor of the usual safari-lodge suspects: Maasai warrior busts, wicker lampshades and ‘tribal’ mirrors fringed with jute and sea shells. Is it boundary-pushing style? No. Albeit lovely, the look is more Zara Home than haute hospitality – it’s a Marriott, after all.

Amenity-wise, things are tip-top: each tent comes with a canopied balcony overlooking the river and bush (for in-room wildlife spotting potential) and has an outdoor hot tub to soak in the view. Bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers, zhuzhed up with licks of marble and copper to up the glam factor. Bring a book along, though: the tents are the first rooms within the Marriott portfolio to forgo TVs – but with these views, who needs one?

Food and drink

Sarabi restaurant and the adjoining Fig Tree Lounge sit at the heart of the camp to offer the human equivalent of the watering hole in view just across the river. Guests gather here in the early morning for pre-game-drive croissants and coffee in thermos cups, while late risers trickle in for a breakfast (the herby scrambled eggs are divine) and flakey pastries, all in the shade of a giant fig tree. For lunch and dinner, chefs design rotating three-course menus (in order to keep food waste to a minimum) that depend on what’s available that day from both suppliers around Kenya and the on-site vegetable garden. We had lunches including falafel wraps and zingy cucumber gazpacho, and dinners of citrusy salmon and lamb chops. That said, the kitchen team is happy to go off-menu too: ask for a spread of local specialities, and they’ll deliver a bona fide Kenyan feast of roast meats, salted cabbage, and ugali (dense corn-meal porridge).

While the restaurant meals are delightful, it’s the bush breakfasts and savanna sundowners – all part of the package – that will stick with you long after your return home. Expect the full safari fantasy of folding tables with white tablecloths fluttering in the breeze, gleaming ice buckets with champagne and Tusker beers, and pop-up kitchen and cocktail stations pitched under a lone acacia tree.

JW Marriott brought along its signature Spa by JW concept, but gave it an African makeover. Occupying a trio of tents near the pool, it’s a welcome spot for post-safari rubdowns and sunburn-soothing facials done with all-natural spa products from South African skincare brand Healing Earth. Treatment rooms overlook the bush where, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot baboons and zebras strolling past while a soft-spoken therapist kneads your muscles into blissful submission. For a little more action, there’s a breezy gym tent with on-theme equipment made from leather and polished wood, as well as guided sunset yoga sessions around the pool.

The neighbourhood

The Masai Mara National Reserve unfurls across the river. This is one of Kenya’s most popular safari spots for good reason; the vast national park is prime Big Five territory, which means you’re almost guaranteed to encounter lions, elephants, cape buffaloes, and with a pinch of luck you might spot the more elusive rhinos and leopards. Herds of zebras, giraffes, and gazelles hop past as soon as you leave the camp in a semi-open safari jeep (game drivers are included in the room rate), while the Talek River and the nearby watering hole attract baboons, hippos, and even the occasional Nile crocodile. The camp’s position on the reserve’s northeastern perimeter also puts guests relatively close to the area's famed wildebeest migration action, which takes place from July to October .

The service

“Hospitality from the heart” is one of those hackneyed hotel-lingo terms – but I fail to find a better phrase to describe the genuine and warm service here. From the hand-written goodnight notes by my housekeeper, Mercy, to the endless post-safari chats with ever-cheery restaurant manager Thelma and her team, every interaction was a delight, and felt far from contrived. Even better, the hotel has made it a mission to have an overall staff that's at least 70 per cent Maasai locals. In my stay during the first month of operation, that count hovered around 65 per cent. Many of them had only just kicked off their hospitality careers, a fact that was hard to believe thanks to the team’s cheery attitudes and casual confidence.

For families

The lodge welcomes children ages six and up, and has a family suite with two separate bedrooms for larger groups. While there’s no kids club (or TVs), a library stocked with board games offers plenty of after-dark and rainy-day entertainment.

A lodge of this calibre located in a natural reserve may never be truly sustainable, but the hotel strives to keep its environmental footprint as small as possible: most of the camp has been built from responsibly sourced wood around the existing vegetation, while keeping wildlife migration routes intact. On the resource front, solar panels and a thermodynamic water heater convert Kenya’s plentiful sunshine into electricity for the on-site water borehole (which provides water that’s filtered and distributed to both the lodge and nearby local communities) and hot showers. While there’s still plenty of room for improvement, it’s encouraging to see that sustainability isn’t an afterthought in this wild setting.

Accessibility

All public areas and three of the tents are accessible for wheelchair users; one of those has a bathroom adapted for ADA standards.

Anything left to mention?

To increase your chances of spotting wildlife from your balcony, ask for tent 19 or 20: Both overlook the camp’s animal crossing, which sees elephants, zebras and even lions pass through at night.

Why the Masai Mara remains a place like no other

The luxurious jw marriott lodge sits within one of the most important nature reserves in the world.

Heading to the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge in Kenya , our adventure begins the moment we step off our 13-seater Cessna plane.

We set foot on Keekorok Airport's unpaved airstrip, the vast plains of the Masai Mara , one of the most important reserves in the world, spread out far and wide. Green hills roll in the distance, some of the view obstructed by tall grass.

Aside from the rudimentary rooms that serve as offices for the airport, it only takes a moment to realise we were already in the middle of the wilderness. This is a place renowned for its lion, leopard, cheetah and elephant populations.

We are being picked up in a customised open-sided Toyota Land Cruiser that takes us to the rugged terrain effortlessly, making the 30-minute drive to the resort a breeze. Within minutes, we spot gazelles peeking from behind the grass, some curiously scanning as we stare back and whizz past like bobbleheads.

Elephants, hyenas, giraffes and more gazelles dot the landscape as we drive along the dirt road, as it slowly begins to sink in that the Masai Mara is a place like no other.

A lone elephant grazing in the Masai Mara Nature Reserve in Kenya. David Tusing / The National

The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is the first luxury safari property operated by Marriott International , the largest hotel chain in the world. Opened in April, the resort sits within the Masai Mara and is built along the Talek River, a water source for many animals in the area.

As a result, the property is deliberately not fenced off from the rest of the reserve. This naturally makes the tantalising prospect of a close encounter with wildlife that much more real.

However, as any sensible person would know – and as the resort's staff will keep reminding you – one does not simply wander off alone, even within the property. Instead, we are to ask for an escort wherever you're headed, especially in the evening, whether it is to the pool, spa, gym, restaurants or even to and from your own suite.

The hotel employs warriors from the ethnic Masai people, after whom the reserve is named, for this purpose. Known for their fearsome reputation and unique customs, they are a comforting presence within the resort, dressed in their traditional robes and distinctive piercings, complete with their menacing weapons.

But my escort Mike, a soft-spoken man with a huge smile, is far from intimidating. On our many walks to and from my tent, we talk about life and family. He's thrilled to share stories about his young daughter whom he wants to send to school when she's older. Education changed his life, he tells me, and he wants to see more youngsters from his village, about a five-hour drive from the resort, go to school, find employment and better their lives.

The Masai people are traditionally pastoralists, and historically lived in different settlements spread across the vast Mara. But modernism and tourism have drastically changed their way of living, with many giving up their nomadic life in favour of waged employment.

Like Mike, many of them are also employed in the tourism industry.

At the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge, for example, 60 per cent of the team are locals as part of its mission to contribute to the region. The hotel also runs an Apprenticeship Programme, teaching young women from the Masai community various skills so they can kick-start their careers in hospitality.

This is a striking property that's made up of a collection of 20 luxury private tents or suites of similar sizes, dotted along the winding Talek.

Seamlessly blending into the savannah, a dramatic suspension bridge leads guests over the Talek and into the reception and lounge area that also functions as the heart of the lodge. This is where guests can wine and dine, or lounge around the massive fireplace built around a giant fig tree, before being escorted to their tents.

Soft and natural tones and rich textures dominate the elegant interiors, which I can only describe as safari-chic. The design theme also extends to the individual tents, built on raised wooden platforms. Inside is a generous lounge area, a four-poster bed and work desk.

Enclosed by canvas walls on three sides, one side features floor-to-ceiling windows, framed by solid wood, through which you can see the great forest beyond. This side of the wall opens to a massive terrace with its own seating area as well as an outdoor hot tub, with the Talek River flowing below. The fully-stocked bathroom's shower also leads to an outdoor shower area for that ultimate one-with-nature experience.

While well-connected with Wi-Fi, it's no wonder there are no television sets anywhere.

All tents at the JW Marriott Masai Mara are similar in size with the exception of the honeymoon suite, which comes with its own private plunge pool, as well as two interconnecting king and twin suites.

Wake up to views of the Masai Mara Reserve. Photo: JW Marriott

For those looking for the ultimate relaxation, the Spa by JW offers a range of signature treatments with locally inspired therapies. A fully-equipped gym is also next door.

While it's a tempting prospect to just while away your time at this luxury resort, the hotel also organises plenty of game drives, bush meals and sundowners in the wild, all included as part of the stay. Those travelling between June and September can also witness the annual great wildebeest migration , where more than 10 million animals travel a distance of 1,800 miles from the Serengeti in neighbouring Tanzania, crossing the Masai Mara on the way.

My personal favourite is the early morning game drive, which is the best time we're told to spot the Masai Mara's “Big Five” in all their glory: lions, leopards, buffaloes, rhinoceros and elephants.

Setting off at dawn, the 1,510-kilometre-square reserve is picture-perfect wherever you look. Watching the sun's soft glow light up the terrain as wild animals roam freely a few feet away is a surreal experience.

A pack of lions enjoy their hunt in the Masai Mara. David Tusing / The National

Within minutes, our driver is radioed about a pride of lions who've been spotted feasting on the carcass of a buffalo they'd just hunted. We arrive at the location along with almost a dozen other safari vehicles and see forest rangers directing "traffic", ensuring the animals are not disturbed and that each vehicle is given a chance to go as close as possible.

We drive close enough to be able to hear the growls, the tearing of flesh and the chomping of bones, and watch in rapt attention along with a pack of jealous hyenas waiting patiently for potential leftovers.

Out of the Big Five, we don't see any rhinoceros. While that's the perfect excuse to return to this magical place, it's also a stark reminder that many of our majestic creatures are becoming harder and harder to find.

The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge: A New Horizon in African Safari Experiences

masai mara safari jw marriott

The African safari has long been a quintessential adventure, offering an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in the continent’s majestic wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. Amidst this traditional setting, the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge emerges as a melange of luxury and innovation, redefining the safari experience for the modern traveler and differentiating itself from other safari lodges across Africa.

Nestled on the edge of the renowned Masai Mara National Reserve, the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is not just a place to stay; it’s an invitation to experience the heart of Africa through a lens of luxury and environmental stewardship. Unlike many safari lodges, which often grapple with balancing guest comfort with ecological sensitivity, the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge has seamlessly integrated the two. The lodge has been constructed with sustainable materials. It employs state-of-the-art green technologies to minimize its carbon footprint, setting a new standard for eco-friendly luxury in the safari industry.

Immersive Cultural and Wildlife Encounters

What sets the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge apart from other lodges is its deep commitment to providing guests with immersive experiences beyond the traditional game drive. While wildlife viewing remains a cornerstone of the safari experience, the lodge offers unique cultural interactions with the local Maasai community. It lets guests learn about their rich traditions, dance, and art. This approach enriches the visitor’s understanding of the region and supports the preservation of local cultures.

Moreover, the lodge’s wildlife encounters are curated by experts to ensure ethical and respectful observation of animals in their natural habitats. Guests can partake in guided walking safaris, nighttime drives to observe nocturnal species, and even conservation activities such as tracking and monitoring, providing a hands-on contribution to wildlife preservation.

Unparalleled Service and Amenities

The hallmark of the JW Marriott brand is its impeccable service and attention to detail, and the Masai Mara Lodge is no exception. Each guest is treated to personalized service that caters to individual preferences and needs, ensuring a stay that is as comfortable as it is memorable. The lodge’s amenities, including a world-class spa, gourmet dining featuring local and international cuisine, and luxurious accommodations with panoramic views of the savannah, elevate the safari experience to new heights of sophistication.

The lodge’s design also blends contemporary luxury and traditional Masai elements, creating an authentic and elegantly modern sense of place. Using local art and materials in the décor enhances the aesthetic appeal and supports the local economy and artisan communities.

A Catalyst for Change in the Safari Industry

The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is not merely setting new standards for luxury and sustainability but acting as a catalyst for change within the broader safari industry. By demonstrating that luxury and environmental conservation can go hand in hand, the lodge encourages other operators to adopt more sustainable practices. Its community engagement initiatives also showcase the benefits of tourism that supports and uplifts local communities, promoting a model of responsible and ethical travel.

Furthermore, the lodge’s innovative approach to wildlife and cultural experiences shifts the industry paradigm from passive observation to active participation and education. This enriches the guest experience and fosters a deeper appreciation for conservation efforts and the importance of preserving Africa’s natural and cultural heritage.

A Good Disruption To The Traditional Industry

The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge represents a new era in safari tourism, where luxury, sustainability, and ethical travel converge to create an unparalleled experience. Its unique blend of comfort, conservation, and cultural immersion sets it apart from other safari lodges and positions it as a leader in the evolving safari industry. As the lodge continues to inspire change and set new benchmarks, it offers guests the adventure of a lifetime. It contributes to preserving and appreciating Africa’s incomparable wilderness and cultural richness.

In a world where travelers increasingly seek meaningful and responsible experiences, the JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge stands out as a shining example of how luxury tourism can be a force for good. It is a testament to the power of innovation, commitment, and passion in transforming the safari experience while contributing to conserving our planet’s most precious resources. The JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge is redefining luxury safari tourism and reimagining the future of travel itself.

How To Spend 3 Days In Masai Mara, The Safari Park From The Lion King

This Kenyan national park is one of the best places in the world to see lions, leopards, and cheetahs in the wild.

masai mara safari jw marriott

When it comes to planning an African safari , TikTok can agree on one thing: Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya needs to be on your itinerary.

“The Land of the Big Cats” has a reputation as one of the best places on the continent to see lions, leopards, and cheetahs in the wild; it was one of the main filming locations of the live-action Lion King movie .

Masai Mara’s location in the Great Rift Valley gives it a leg up on wildlife diversity compared to other reserves. Its 580 miles of lush savannah is home to almost 90 different mammal species, and safari-goers have a good chance of spotting all of the African “Big Five” — lions, leopards, elephants, African buffalo, and the elusive black rhinos — as well as members of the slightly lesser-known (but equally ‘Gram-worthy) so-called “Ugly Five,” hyenas and warthogs included. If you visit in late summer, you might even see the Great Migration of over 2 million wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores crossing the Mara River from the neighboring Serengeti Desert.

This February, I spent 10 days visiting Kenya’s national parks and game reserves on an itinerary curated by EF Ultimate Break , a Gen Z and millennial tour company. After a week of bush glamping in sparsely vegetated and dusty parks throughout Kenya, Masai Mara was comparatively lush, and my safari Jeep was constantly stumbling upon families of elephants, giraffes, and lions.

Giraffes in Masai Mara.

If you’re heading to Kenya on safari soon or scrolling TikTok for future inspiration , here’s what’s worth doing at Masai Mara and how to spend three days at the reserve.

What To Do At Masai Mara

Day 1: hang out with baby elephants & meet the maasai tribe.

After a 20-plus-hour journey from Chicago, I stretched my legs at one of Nairobi’s most popular attractions. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Orphans Project houses baby elephants and rhinos who are currently unable to survive in the wild for whatever reason, and it’s just as cute as you’d expect. There was a collective “aw” as the tiniest baby black rhino stumbled out to meet the crowd, and we got introduced to all the baby elephants as they clumsily ran to the keepers for their bottles of milk.

The experience was more crowded and touristy than I expected, but I enjoyed learning the story behind each baby animal, seeing their personalities, and petting them. You’re also able to sponsor one of the baby elephants or rhinos until they’re ready to go back into the wild.

One must-see in Masai Mara: the baby elephants.

After hanging out with the animals, get into your safari Jeep to drive the five hours to Masai Mara. I stayed at PrideInn Mara Camp, which had glamping tents and cottages just steps from the park and Lake Talek, but there are plenty of accommodations around Masai Mara’s perimeter (including regular hotels like a JW Marriott Masai Mara if sleeping in a tent without air conditioning isn’t your vibe).

The best part of the PrideInn Mara Camp (and others in the area) is the presence of the Maasai tribe , which welcomed us with a traditional song and dance. There were also a number of warriors who worked in the hotel and who would walk us to and from our rooms if it was late at night.

Day 2: Take A Hot Air Balloon & A Drive

The park is huge, so soaring over the savannah to see the landscape and animals from above is an efficient and bucket list-worthy way to start off your safari experience.

Take a hot air balloon ride over Masai Mara for a bird's-eye view.

We had to wake up at 4 a.m. to head over to the hot air balloon launch site, but I quickly stopped complaining about the early call time when we were in the balloon and the sun was rising over Masai Mara.

We got to take in bird's eye views of the Mara River (including a rare sighting of an adorable baby hippo that was splashing through it), check out a family of grazing giraffes from above, and get eye-level with the vultures in the trees. Afterward, we enjoyed an English-style brunch with unlimited mimosas in the middle of the bush, then headed back to the camp to nap it all off.

Travel writer Lara Walsh took a hot air balloon ride over Masai Mara.

In the early afternoon, we headed on our second safari and stayed until twilight. After spending almost two weeks in Kenya, I realized it’s 100% worth doing two safari drives a day — one in the morning as the sun rises and one at dusk right before the predators are about to start hunting — to get the fullest picture of how the animals act in their natural habitat.

Depending on the time of day, you’ll also see different personalities from the lions. When I went in the morning, the lions weren’t the apex predators I’d anticipated. Instead, the pride was almost playful, with a young male lion with a dandelion mane nuzzling his father and the female lions, and cuddling with them in the sun. The only hint of their agility and quick reflexes were shown in how they quickly flipped from side to side and how alert they seemed at all times, with their heads suddenly popping above the grass when they’d been lazily napping in the sun just moments earlier.

A lion in Masai Mara.

Another day, as the sun went down, I saw a group of lionesses who’d been napping and were barely camouflaged in the long grass start to oh-so-casually make their move. They inched toward a grazing herd of wildebeests, their eyes locked on their next meal. I wouldn’t have experienced these different personalities if I hadn’t seen both in action.

Day 3: Go On A Morning Game Drive & Visit The Maasai Tribe

After going on a sunrise game drive, take an afternoon tour of the Maasai tribe’s village. Dressed in signature bright red robes, the warriors greeted us at the entrance of their village. They taught us some of their chants and performed a 10-minute celebratory song and dance that we were encouraged to take part in, which included mimicking the roaring of lions, shaking our shoulders, and competing to see who could jump the highest.

Then, they sectioned us off into groups to tour the family huts and learn about their pastoral lifestyle. Many of the Maasai people have gone into tourism and are employed by hotels and other hospitality businesses in the area, but they’re one of the few tribes where many members still practice their traditional way of life.

Members of the Maasai tribe greet visitors with a ceremony.

After the tour, we got to shop the tribe’s gorgeous beadwork, carved wooden products, and other souvenirs. I picked up a blue bracelet, a beaded choker, and some wooden coasters painted with safari animals to bring back home with me.

Ultimately, I came back to Chicago feeling relaxed, inspired, and fully ready to take advantage of my apartment’s air conditioning. I gained a deep appreciation for my proximity to wildlife during my bush glamping adventure (yes, even for the crickets and lizards in my tent).

Going on safari was life-changing for so many reasons. I was awestruck by seeing a 3-day-old hippo hanging out with his mom, and a pack of elephants racing across the savannah. I was surprised that the lions and giraffes seemed to barely take notice of our Jeep.

Animals lounged, seemingly unbothered, near my safari tour group.

The safari also taught me a lesson in patience. Unlike in a zoo, you’re not able to control when or where you’ll see cheetahs, hippos, or prides of lions — which ends up making it so much more fulfilling when you do.

It’s not a question of if, but when, I’ll go back to Masai Mara on safari. And who knows — maybe this time I’ll spend more than a few days exploring Kenya’s most famous game reserve.
