Use of the brake by cruise control?

The throttle is used by cruise control to regulate your car’s speed in the same manner as you would. However, there are a few variations, and it's worth checking which system your car (or potential car) is fitted with. But what is it?

Regular cruise control

The most basic of cruise control systems maintain the speed you have set as you drive along without requiring the driver to press down the accelerator. It will increase the throttle input to help keep the set speed on uphills, where a car would ordinarily slow down or require additional throttle to maintain a set speed. These systems will not stop the car from speeding up past the set speed on a downhill as the effects of gravity take over.  Does cruise control save fuel?

These systems will not only maintain your speed on level roads and on uphills but will also slow the car down on the downhills in order to maintain the set speed. What is a driver assistance system?

Driver assistance systems relieve the driver of the task of driving, offer more comfort and increase safety. In an emergency, a driver assistance system can even take control of the car. Liability for the task of driving always remains with the driver.

Status Quo driver assistance systems

Currently, driver assistance systems act as practical support: Sensors capture information on – for example, speed limits – the distance to other vehicles and lane markings. Also, GPS and navigation system data feeds into the processing. Thanks to this data, audio signals or visual displays can warn against potentially hazardous situations.

However, there are already more advanced systems that not only warn you but also actively help you manage the vehicle if necessary or preferred. Some driver assistance systems brake, accelerate or perform active steering movements to avoid an accident or take the strain off the driver, for instance in critical or monotonous driving situations. Other systems assist you with maneuvering or parking.

How does hill start assist work?

You’ll certainly know this situation well: You’re driving up a hill and shortly before the peak, you need to stop. When starting with a manual gearbox, you press the clutch and take your foot off the brake to accelerate. What happens at this exact moment? You roll back. Hill start assist – or simply start assist – should prevent exactly this. When the driver disengages the brake, the rear axle secures the vehicle for a short time. When starting the driver assistant releases this once more.

Benefits: This driver assistance system is certainly not indispensable for the safe operation of a vehicle as with sufficient experience you can avoid tricky situations yourself. The assistance system can nevertheless make starting on extreme gradients, or with an additional trailing load, more pleasant.

What added value does road sign recognition offer?

When you’re in slow-moving traffic it’s often difficult to devote your full attention to everything that is happening. The road layout, oncoming traffic, speed restrictions, what’s happening beside you as well as behind you: A driver has to bear all this in mind. Road sign recognition can relieve you from this with help of a camera system which scans road signs and represents the processed data on the display. Accordingly, the road signs are displayed directly on your screen. Often this system is contained within other driver assistance systems such as the right of way warner, the wrong way assistant or speed limit info.

Benefits: For accurate results, the driver assistance system is able to take into account and process various data sources such as recognised road signs, navigation devices and current vehicle data. Road sign recognition offers you increased safety and comfort during your journey by providing you with information i.e. right of way rules. You can concentrate on the traffic better without having to constantly gaze at the forest of signposts.

How does emergency brake assist work?

Emergency brake assist warns about the risk of collision and, where appropriate, brings the vehicle to a complete stop before it results in a crash with an obstruction, a person or another vehicle. Sensors measure the current speed and distance of the car ahead or the static obstruction (e.g. a person). Depending on the system, cyclists can also be identified. Acoustic warning signals are complemented by visual displays. Prior to emergency braking the driver assistance system calculates the optimal braking power and the resulting necessary braking pressure. This computed pressure is, depending on the system, independently transmitted by the assistant into an automatic brake, or only then applied when you press the brake pedal. A further development of brake assist is avoidance manoeuvre assistance: In order to avoid a collision, this system actively supports the driver with an evasive manoeuvre.

Benefits: Emergency brake assist offers many advantages: Drivers are often careless, distracted, find themselves in chaotic circumstances or underestimate the distance to the vehicle ahead. This brake assist can, at the very least, reduce the severity grade of certain types of vehicle collisions.    

How does steering and lane guidance assist provide support?

Congestion, slow-moving traffic, and long, monotonous journeys are sadly not uncommon, especially on the highway. When this happens, you have to keep a steady hand and patiently follow the road, sometimes for long periods of time. In these situations, a steering and lane guidance assistant can help you keep your vehicle in the lane – at high speeds as well – and make the task of steering easier. Cameras detect the lane markings, thus guiding the driver assistance system to the boundaries of the lane you are driving in. A look beyond the borders of Europe shows just how much more advanced this technology has already become. In some countries, the BMW Driving Assistant allows drivers to cruise “hands-off” at speeds of up to 130 km/h.

Benefits: Lane guidance assistants can relieve the driver from steering, offer a feeling of safety and, above all, make long motorway journeys more comfortable.

In what way does cruise control make driving easier?

Cruise control is also known as “Speed Control” and allows you to select your desired cruising speed. This often takes place in combination with distance control. Following activation the driver assistance system constantly maintains your chosen speed and therefore offers enhanced comfort during long-distances. Cruise control can electronically adjust the speed to the surroundings and appropriately adjust the engine power.

Benefits: With this assistance system particularly long journeys are more relaxing, and you can concentrate on the traffic. In conjunction with distance control the driving comfort is further enhanced: This calculates the speed of the vehicle ahead and automatically alters your own speed.    

What is distance control?

Distance control is also called Adaptive Cruise Control. With a pre-set desired speed this driver assistance system orientates to the vehicle ahead and automatically brakes or accelerates depending on the distance from the leading vehicle. This system has already been integrated into many modern vehicles. The applied sensors measure the current speed and the distance from the car ahead. If you find yourself in stop start traffic, the distance control takes over braking and start-up.

Benefits: Above all, you can use distance control during long journeys in combination with the cruise control function in order to arrive at your destination much more relaxed and to rest your legs as you don’t need to continually press the pedals. You must of course still keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Besides comfort, distance control should also provide for greater safety during the journey.    

What does the speed limit assist do?

This driver assistance system combines the distance control with speed limit recognition and can also called Speed Limit Assist. Speed limit assist superimposes information about the speed limit onto the display area. With the help of this assistant you can adapt the maximum speed of the vehicle to a particular limit. The system scans road signs with a camera. Software then processes all the data and combines this with the data from the navigation system. You can view this driver assistance system as additional “speed camera insurance” because, in supplementing cruise control and the distance controller, it recognises the respective speed limit and – in the latest design – also automatically adjusts.

Benefits: According to research papers, around a quarter of accidents are due to speeding and the failure to maintain safe distances. Here, speed limit assist can increase your safety. Nevertheless, these systems do not absolve the vehicle operator of responsibility – they can however help to significantly reduce these numbers.    

How does a lane-change warning work? Why use lane-change assist?

The lane-change warning can help you to safely execute a lane-change and support the view in the rear mirror and over the shoulder. Sensors monitor the area beside and behind your car, and they cover the notorious blind spot. If another car approaches your vehicle in the blind spot or is dangerously close and overlooked by the driver, the driver assistant recognises this and warns against changing lanes. This warning is made, for example, using flashing symbols in the side mirror and even with steering wheel vibrations or steering impulses. A further development is lane-change assist. This means you can change lanes automatically once you’ve set the indicator for a few seconds. In doing so, the system assesses whether there is another vehicle in the blind spot or dangerously close and only changes lane as long as the sensors do not detect a hazard.

Benefits: A lane-change warning offers additional protection for road users, but it’s not a replacement for the rear and side mirrors or glancing over your shoulder. This driver assistance system can indeed help to avoid accidents – the driver must nevertheless pay full attention.

What advantages does parking assist offer?

Parking assistants support you when manoeuvring or parking and help protect you from parking damage. The range thereby extends from systems with a warning function to systems which display the surroundings or automatically carry out the parking process. Assistants make use of ultrasound and camera sensor data. Parkpilot indicates the distance to surrounding objects and in this way supports the drive mainly through the use of beeping. A rear camera is more detailed: Additionally, it displays the area behind the car and adds in suggested lines which provides guidance when parking. In further developments, driver assistance systems completely take over the parking process and independently carry out all the required steering manoeuvres as well as braking and acceleration. Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) supports the driver on roads with less traffic by keeping the speed constant irrespective of rolling resistances (incline, downhill driving and vehicle load). In spite of the support, the driver remains responsible for control of the vehicle. It is possible to override the DCC function at any time by braking or accelerating the vehicle.

The driver has the option of adjusting the set speed in small or large increments, which is then set and maintained by the system by controlling the drive and brakes. It can be changed using the left- hand switch block on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL). The speed is increased or reduced by 1 mph by tapping the rocker switch. Each time the rocker button is pressed beyond the pressure point, the speed increases or reduces by 5 mph. The DCC steadily maintains a selected speed from approximately 20 mph (30 km/h).

The set speed is indicated in the instrument cluster in the familiar way; by a mark that moves round the speed reading. Notes are added to the displays in the instrument cluster, if necessary.

If the vehicle's own deceleration is not sufficient to maintain the preset speed, the brake is activated accordingly.

If ECO PRO or SPORT mode is activated, cruise control is also set to a fuel-efficient or sporty driving style. Due to the fuel-efficient driving style in ECO PRO driving mode, in some situations the vehicle's speed may exceed or drop below the set speed, for example on downhill gradients or inclines.

The system is interrupted automatically in the following situations:

• If the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is performing an adjustment.

The 2021 BMW 5 Series Facelift boasts a wealth of cutting-edge technologies with respect to active safety, driving assistance systems and autonomous drive capabilities. The revamped 5 Series generation features several new, improved assistance systems for ensuring a high level of safety during autonomous driving.

Given the latest developments and the sophisticated technology employed, the new BMW 5 Series can be classified as capable of ensuring an autonomous drive of Level 2.5.

Thus, the steering wheel models for the 5 Series LCI display a new arrangement of the buttons, ensuring a smooth, intuitive access to all relevant autonomous driving assistants.

The 5 Series LCI is fitted with standard Cruise Control with brake function, manual Speed Limit Assist and the fatigue detection Attentiveness Assistant.

The Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function is offered as an option and consists of several interconnected camera- and radar-based assistance systems as follows:

• Cruise control with distance control
• Speed Limit Info including no-overtaking indicator and display of upcoming speed restrictions
• Front collision warning with brake intervention, including collision warning with braking function, person warning with city braking function and adaptive brake assist

Another significant upgrade comes from the optional Driving Assistant, which has been thoroughly enhanced for the new 5 Series and comprises the following assistants:

• Lane Change Warning including blind spot detection
• Manual Speed Limit Assist including no-overtaking indicator and display of upcoming speed restrictions.

• Rear collision warning

Exclusively offered in conjunction with the high-end BMW Live Cockpit Professional, the optional Driving Assistant Professional comprises the Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function and the Driving Assistant, but also packs additional technologies such as:

• Steering and Lane Control Assistant with Active Navigation and Lane Change Assistant
• Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection, including Lane Change Warning and Lane Departure Warning

To visually help the driver of the new 5 Series, the BMW Live Cockpit Professional now features the new 3D visualization of the surrounding area while using the Driving Assistant. This function depicts all the vehicles, trucks, buses and motorcycle on the current and adjacent lanes.

If the route navigation is on, the 3D visualization also displays helpful guidance above the Driving Assistant virtualization area within the digital instrument cluster of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional.

In the long list of new, leading driver assistance technologies made available for the new 5 Series generation, it is worth mentioning the automated Parking Assistant that now embeds a reversing function.

There’s also a more complex choice in this respect as well. The Parking Assistant Plus combines the standard capabilities of the Parking Assistant with additional enhancements: the Park View, Panorama View and 3D Top View.

With the help of the Remote 3D View, customers of the new 5 Series can visualize a virtual image of the car and the surrounding area on their smartphones.

Within the Parking Assistance Plus, another new feature gets available in the 5 Series for the first time: the Drive Recorder. Using the multiple cameras installed on the car, the system is able to record video footage and offers the option to later replay the captured materials on the Control Display when the car is stationary or to export the footage via the USB port.

Parking the new 5 Series in tight space and getting it out safely will never be easier, as the G30/G31 LCI models can now be optionally specced with the Remote Control Parking, which relies on the BMW Digital Key.

With the Remote Control Parking, the new 5 Series can be safely maneuvered in and out of tight parking spaces, with the acceleration and braking being monitored by the sensors of the vehicle’s assistance system and overseen by the driver standing outside the car.

Active Cruise Control - is it an extra cost option?

Can anyone confirm (or deny) that this is standard equipment in the M50 in the UK (it's listed under the Driving Assistant Professional optional package): Driving Assistant Professional is a camera and radar-based driver assistance system that offers optimum comfort and safety during monotonous or complex driving situations. It includes: Active Cruise Control with approach control regulates the distance from the vehicle in front using radar sensors in the bumper. It automatically maintains distance and queue speed in stop-and-go traffic and traffic jams down to a complete standstill. This suggests that it's not part of the 'Driving Assistant' standard package. I can't believe the standard M50 (or any i4 for that matter) doesn't have it.  

The front radar which is needed ACC is not standard. It only gets added with the driving assistance professional package.

Cruise Control with brake function only means that it will keep your speed constant also on a downhill road, not that it will brake when a car in front of you brakes. That is TACC. For Germany there is a separate 500€ option "Aktive Geschwindigkeitsregelung mit Stop&Go-Funktion" (S05DF) that is giving just that.  

In Finland there is option 9QY (standard both for idrive40 and M50) that allows to activate active cruise control after delivery (with cost of course..). So required hardware should be there, this was also confirmed by dealer and bmw group finland, via mail. Apparently this has been option for example for X5 already. But I agree that active cruise control should be standard anyways.  

In the UK (for my spec at least) it looks like it can be added via online purchase after the car arrives. All the hardware appears to be there so it just needs activated. I'm hoping an FSC code will be available to activate it for less than what BMW want.  

That is good news. I really don't want the rest of the package.  

My salesperson: "Adaptive cruise control cannot be a standalone option. The technology is far more advanced than just maintaining distance from the car in front." If true, too bad as I find adaptive cruise control the only think I really want from the Driving Assistant Professional package.  

This is what I thought, but again in the UK, my sales person confirmed Active Cruise Control can be added after delivery. I too am not sure how this is possible, since it requires the hardware, and obviously the distance control buttons on the steering wheel. Can anyone confirm how this is all even possible after purchase of the car?  

The terminology gets mixed up a lot (active/adaptive/dynamic, etc.), but having had a look at the BMW connected drive shop, it does indeed look like you can purchase it after the vehicle is delivered ( Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function | BMW UK ) That is as long as your spec has the 9QY option, as far as I and my salesperson can tell. I just wish this was more obvious and they could say for certain. Still doesn't really answer how you control the cruise distance gap - so maybe the steering wheel comes with the distance controls as standard, but they don't do anything unless you purchase this option?

I test drove i4 M40 yesterday and wasn't happy when with the 40 you can't purchase technology plus pack which add driving assistant professional, its only can be purchased with m50 for now, dealer saying due to chip shortage they keep the goodies for premium cars now. He also referred to buying the adaptive cruise control from connected drive after delivery. On their demonstrator i4 40m there are distance control buttons on steering wheel when you press it it's says function needs to be activated through connected drive. I endup not ordering as I want to buy the technology plus pack as all my previous BMW's had driving assistance professional and parking assistance plus. Dealer manufacturing slot only for M40 not the M50 😞  

I just picked up my 2023 M440i xdrive convertible and thought that I had ordered all options available. Now I discover that the "dynamic cruise control" is not "adaptive" and that even a simple feature like the automatic switching of the headlights is not there. Thankfully I haven't sold my 2016 E550 convertible yet, which has all those features (and a V8!). I might take a loss giving that Bavarian thing back, but even basic Toyotas have those features now standard.  

Any updates here? Did anyone already purchase the ACC? How are the costs? How is it activated as the steering wheel is not prepared therefore?  

Still can’t get it. I think it may need the latest software update, without that it’s just not appearing at the online store.

Everything to Know About The BMW Dynamic Cruise Control

Cruise controls were once reserved for only selected models of BMW. Less fortunate drivers had to keep their tired eyes and limbs fixed on the road and the pedals for long hours. These fatigued drivers were the cause of many accidents. So, automakers, like BMW and Toyota, started adding the feature to more of their cars.

The BMW dynamic cruise control is an improvement over the traditional system. Traditional cruise control can only do so much as keep your vehicle going at a preset speed. Meanwhile, the dynamic version can detect other vehicles in front of you and road curves and react accordingly.

What is BMW Dynamic Cruise Control? 

In conventional cruise control , you set the vehicle to a certain speed. Your car will then automatically accelerate up to that speed and maintain it. The benefit is that the foot you keep on the gas pedal can get some rest. Also, as the car maintains the preset speed, it can save you from speeding tickets. 

Difference With Conventional Cruise Control

However, conventional cruise control doesn’t have the necessary technology to adjust your car according to upcoming obstacles. So, you must still watch out for another vehicle appearing or the road curving abruptly.

This is where Dynamic cruise control offers an improvement. Besides setting a speed, you can also set the following distance on your BMW cruise control.

When you are speeding across an open highway, the car will normally continue at its set speed. But your BMW will automatically slow down as soon as another vehicle or obstacle appears. When the obstacle moves away, your car will accelerate on its own and reach the preset speed again. 

How It Works?  

Three components work in concert to make dynamic cruise control possible. Firstly, there is the radar system. Your dynamic cruise control will shoot radar waves from the car. These waves reflect off the object in front of the vehicle and return to the car. 

Secondly, there is the sensor system. This system can receive the radar signals that come back from the objects and make necessary adjustments. There are two kinds of sensors in dynamic cruise control- Speed sensors and Distance Sensors. 

The Distance sensors keep track of the gap between your car and an upcoming obstacle based on the signals it receives. Meanwhile, speed sensors decelerate your vehicle when the gap is shorter than the following distance. Similarly, it will adjust to a faster speed when the path clears up.

The third component is the longitudinal controller. It is kind of like a computer that collects information from the radar and sensor systems. In light of that information, it sends appropriate command signals to the engine to slow down or accelerate the car.

How do I know if my BMW has dynamic cruise control?  

Almost all the newer BMW models have dynamic cruise controls. Examining the steering wheel is the simplest way to tell if your car has cruise control. 

Cars with dynamic cruise control will have 5-6 buttons on the left panel of the steering wheel. Depending on the specific BMW model the number and orientation of this switch might vary. 

Here’s a table with all the BMW models that have dynamic cruise control-

How To Use The BMW Dynamic Cruise Control? 

Renowned automakers like BMW are always trying to improve their vehicles in the next model. Therefore, slight differences in the cruise control panel on your steering wheel might exist.

However, almost all the systems have some things in common. For instance, you will always find the dynamic cruise control panel on the left side of the steering wheel. There are also various other similarities, based on which you can follow the steps below to operate the cruise control- 

Step 1: Turning On the Control  

You can turn on your cruise control by pressing the assisted drive button. You can identify it from the car-and-gauge drawing on it. You will notice a green sign (cruise control gauge) on the digital cluster when the system turns on. 

Step 2: Set Your Speed  

Next, you will set your speed and the following distance. The ‘Set’ button allows you to determine your constant speed. Dynamic cruise controls also have a speed limit assistant. You can use it to ensure the car is within your desired speed at all zones.

Step 3: Distance Setting

The digital cluster will show several lines indicating distance. Each line refers to one car length. You can use the distance buttons to reduce or increase the number of this line. The distance buttons are marked with plus and minus signs and function accordingly.

Suppose you set the following distance to two lines. In that case, your car will decelerate when you are two car lengths away from an obstacle. Whenever an obstacle appears ahead, the instrument cluster will show a sign which looks like a car.

Step 4: Speed Increments

Nesting between the distance control button is the rocker switch. It is smaller and also has plus and minus markings. It almost feels like a volume up and down button on audio devices. You can use this switch to increase the set speed. BMW allows speed increments of one and five mph.

Step 5: Cancel and Resume 

You can press the cancel button to turn off the dynamic cruise control in your car. The same happens when you hit the brakes. Press the resume button to return to the assisted driving mode at your preferred set speed and following distance.

How do I change from regular cruise control to dynamic cruise control?  

If your car has both controls, you can press the Cancel button for several seconds. This will switch between modes. Also, the main difference between regular and dynamic is in distance control. So, as soon as you activate the distance button, you enter the dynamic mode.

How much does dynamic cruise control cost?  

The dynamic cruise controls with top-notch technology and capabilities will cost around 2000-2500 dollars. However, you can get more basic and less capable systems at around 500 dollars (equipment plus labor costs). 

Does adaptive cruise control apply brakes? 

The distance and speed control features allow the adaptive cruise control to apply some amount of braking. It usually does this when encountering a traffic jam or a non-moving obstacle.  

Can you add adaptive cruise control after purchase?  

You can buy adaptive cruise control kits and add them to your car. However, your BMW must fulfill the design and technological requirements for the addition of this kit. Kits range from 250$ to 4000$ in price, and you will need automotive experts for the installation job.

The BMW dynamic cruise control makes the road safer for everyone. It also reduces fatigue and stress on long road trips. So, if your car doesn’t have one, it’s worth spending thousands of dollars on installation. However, the recommended action is to buy a car with dynamic cruise control, to begin with. 

Turn off cruise control on busy local streets. These roads are unpredictable; another vehicle or person can come before your car at any time. Driving at a preset speed in this scenario is dangerous. 

Plus, knowing that you are in assisted driving mode will make you relax and reduce your mental alertness. So, reserve cruise control only for the highways.

Cruise Control with braking functionality

Hi All I have in my X3 (F25) 2011 cruise control with braking functionality. Is there any possibilities to switch off that braking and get rid of that uncomfortable functionality? No long and steep downhills in Finland.  

What do you mean "uncomfortable"? That sounds a little silly. It doesn't suddenly jam on the brakes out of nowhere, it would only brake when engine braking isn't sufficient and the vehicle is speeding up. No, you can't shut that off. If you dont like it, don't use cruise control.  

Have to agree, the system is very well behaved and just enough brake is applied to control the speed to the desired speed. I recently experimented and while it was engaged at 70 mph I quickly knocked the set point down to about 50 in 5 mph increments. I could certainly feel the brakes being applied but it was also not at all dramatic. I think it is a great feature.  

I doubt you can change it but I've never looked into it because it's one of my favorite features. Sent from BimmerApp mobile app  

It's there for a reason.  

There are different opinions about that feature for sure. Typically here in Finland we let the car run freely in our relatively gentle downhills. The worst is there that the system brakes more than needed. Example if it is set to 80km/h in downhills, if the braking starts, the speed is lowered to round 75-77km/h. Think about the drivers driving behind me how irritated they are. There is no braking functionality in my E90 cruise control and it's lot better. It's also good to know that every braking increases energy consumption - which is contrary for example to the aim of stop-and-go feature. Please feel free to like your cruise control with braking.

I am not aware of any other marques that even have a braking function on the cruise control. Any other brand with a car on cruise control running downhill the most it would do is let off the throttle and you would still increase speed. And BMW has had this function .. at least since my first BMW (E36)

Samp49, I agree with you; I'd like the ability to optionally turn off the braking function while using the speed control. On transition to steep downhill sections it drops the speed 1 to 2 mph slower than the current setting, just as you report, then slowly returns to the current speed setting. On gentle downhill sections I'd like to be able to allow an increase of a few mph above the speed setting without application of the brakes. I sometimes find myself turning the system off on downhill sections to better conform to the speed of the cars around me and to avoid unnecessary use of the brakes, and resuming the speed setting when back on the level. On the other hand, if I'm really concerned about not exceeding a specific speed (for whatever reason!), the braking function is great to have. And the system controls on the steering wheel and indicators on the speedometer and in the heads-up display are great, so the system is really good overall. Nonetheless, it'd be cool to add a "disable auto braking" push button to the current speed control set. "But officer, I just know I had the speed control fully enabled!" None of this is likely. The solution is, of course, to not use the speed control when its braking is not desirable.  

Coder - you are the first who understood the issue and hit the point - thanks. Seems that no cure for the problem is - or is going to be - available. Thanks for activity to all others.  

I totally agree with the request to switch off the braking feature and this is why. Not some smart reply saying "Then don't use it" My reason for switching the thing off is because when using it on the motorway and you find yourself on a descent, the feature can kick in which activates your brake lights which can be very disconcerting to following traffic which could in theory cause a traffic collision. Surely this is justification to be able to switch it off. I often wondered why I saw vehicles brake lights coming on when there was no apparent reason to brake. NOW I KNOW!!  

If you are on a long downhill run, check to see what the fuel consumption meter is telling you. If it is hard against, or approaching the maximum mpg then simply press the button and come out of cruise control until the decent is finished. BUT. Beware. I have had to replace the rear discs at 38000miles because the pads were worn out due to the unwanted operation of the cruise control applying the rear brakes  

At last I found a few people with same need 🙂 I have the same request on my X5 F15. I would like to toggle CC button between: Off - On without braking - On with braking - Off In many driving conditions I don't like that front brakes are aut turned slightly On to reduce speed with a few km/h. This produces a lot of brake-dust on my front rims, wears front brakepads un-even (inner pad most), scares the driver behind me and waste 'energi'. I would therefore like to program this feature is possible to have the 'best from both worlds'. All the features are there, so it should only need some programming - anyone?

Cruise control with brake function

When I looked online the M140 specs say this is standard now, I have a jan build with cruise control but is there an obvious sign that it will brake other than trying it out ? Buttons just look like normal cruise control and the book is next to useless Just wondered Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk  

The Shadow Edition pack includes cruise control. It's an option on a non-shadow, but either way it includes the braking function.

Ohhh, now I see what you mean. Sorry to disappoint but I believe the braking function will just gently brake if the car is going downhill, for example. So if the CC is set at 70mph and you start going downhill it will just use the brakes to regulate the speed. There is no sensor fitted for 'active' cruise control which you would find on some other models. It won't sense objects in front of you and automatically slow the car down.  

However, if you use the control on the steering wheel to reduce speed the brakes will engage to slow the vehicle down. When I am feeling lazy I drive using the steering wheel throttle controls.

It's still pretty good. Our E91 has std cruise without braking and it's a pain when going downhill and it speeds up, particularly on the motorway in those damn average speed zones. In my 240 I like that it keeps the set speed up or downhill.

It's annoying you could spec ACC for lesser 1 Series and not the M140, I guess it's down to the lack of room in the engine bay ? Sure they could have squeezed it in though...

Activation instructions:.

• Once you’ve logged in, the BMW ConnectedDrive Store will automatically list all the available digital services for your BMW.
• Add Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go to your shopping basket. Enter your payment details and confirm your purchase. When you’ve finished, you’ll receive confirmation via email.
• The next time you drive your vehicle for 15 minutes or more, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go will be ready for activation in your BMW. You’ll need a stable internet connection with adequate reception.
• If Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go is ready at the end of your drive, you'll see a message on the display of your BMW prompting you to activate it. Confirming this prompt will launch activation.
• Have you still not received a message after three days despite making longer trips, or did the activation fail? Then get in touch with BMW ConnectedDrive Customer Support right away.
